While it may be a sad statistic that one in five people will experience depression at some stage of their lives, it’s great to know that a group of local people are hopping on their motorcycles to raise funds for the wonderful work that Lifeline does to raise awareness of depression, and suicide prevention, writes Wendy Johnson.

Extending a lifeline! Kylie Sage, from Kysa Motobikes a ladies motorcycle group, saw the ride advertised last year and realised no one was coordinating a local ride. She contacted the national Black Dog Ride organiser Steve Andrews and expressed interest in promoting the ride, the first for the SE Queensland ladies motorcycle group. Steve is well known for his award winning work raising awareness of depression and suicide prevention. “For last year’s Black Dog Ride we had around 200 riders from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast. We travelled through Canungra and Beaudesert to Boonah,” Kylie says. “We stopped in Beaudesert and then had lunch in Boonah. It’s almost 200k for the round trip.” Kylie says that riding is her passion. She started riding at seven years of age on a dirt bike at her parent’s property. She graduated to street bikes when she was 18 and now rides an eyepopping orange Kawasaki Z750.

well as the Helensvale ride there are also rides planned for Mackay and Townsville. The local event will start from Shark Leathers at Helensvale but not before more than 400 riders enjoy a delicious breakfast put on by the Helensvale Lions Club. Lifeline will be there to present a talk on depression and suicide prevention as raising awareness is the purpose of the ride. Leaving from Helensvale at 9.30am the group will have a 10.30am stop at Beaudesert and then lunch at 12.30pm at the Mt Alford Hotel, another 14 kilometres further on from Boonah. With Lifeline as the beneficiary of the fundraising, the national ride aims to raise awareness for their programs. Every rider and pillion is encouraged to set up a Go Fundraise account with a goal of raising just $50. And if you don’t ride but still want to support Lifeline’s great programs you can make a tax deductible donation too.

2013 Black Dog Ride

Extending a lifeline

This year the national one day ride is on Sunday 24th March with more than 17 rides taking place in every state and territory around the country. As

We all know that life can be difficult at times. However, if it gets to a point of overwhelming feelings of intense pain we can feel very alone

and helpless and that there’s no one who could possibly understand what we are going through. This is where Lifeline’s programs can help. In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 44 and women under 34 and ABS data (2009) shows more people die from suicide than road deaths. As Lifeline says, everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide as most people don’t what to die, they just want their pain to stop. Continued P08

Emma Jolly changing the world of the one

As soon as you meet Logan’s Emma Jolly you know you’re in the presence of a special young lady, writes Wendy Johnson. “Since I was 12 years old I have wanted to travel and help the less fortunate, it’s something that has been embedded deeply on my heart,” Emma says. “I have been raised in the church so I have always been taught that life is about living for the betterment of another. We are quite a close-knit family, we all wear our hearts on our sleeves, we are incredibly open and love is something I have been surrounded by all my life.” When Emma was 12 she had a dream that she was in Africa, and remembers hearing the word nations. She says it was an odd feeling and a word she has never been able to budge. “Multiple people since then have said to me that I see something special about my life around travel and helping the less fortunate.”

The turning point

Emma was able to go on her first mission trip when she was 19 years old, which landed her in a slum called Baseco in the Philippines. “It was an awareness trip to see the harsh realities these people live under every day. This particular day the slum had flooded. It was a rubbish tip where people had taken the rubbish to construct their homes at the tip. Mothers were nursing their infants under these shelters, there were puddles everywhere and the smells were horrific.” Emma found it extremely confronting but says she learnt so much about living in that space and realising that financing and resourcing are not always the answer. “I started thinking about a world that works for everybody and how that would actually look. What moved me is that these people have so much to offer but are unable to due to their lack of resourcing. Their faith is unbelievable, if they get sick they believe that something greater will heal them. They don’t have the diversions that we have in the west and that was incredibly refreshing for my soul.”

A new direction

Now at 26 years of age, Emma is the new International Director of Charity for Shane Willard Ministries based in the USA with worldwide programs. The name of the charity that Emma supports is called Restoring Hope. She will be travelling to China and South Africa this year, to visit four orphanages. The orphanage in China houses orphans with special needs who have been abandoned. Emma says that in South Africa they are in partnership with an organisation that reaches out to gang members living on the street. “The man who runs this program is educating them for their Year 12 certificate, housing and feeding them and offering them job skills. His success rate is 100%. I will spend three weeks in Cape Town with him, going to the courts, the prison and the soup kitchen. I will be a simple helping hand while I’m there and these projects will just deepen my commitment.” In the meantime Emma is meeting with people, sharing her story and her heart. Emma proudly says that 100 per cent of proceeds raised goes to the ministry’s work.

Lifeline offers a 24x7 telephone crisis support service and cites the statistic that more than one million Australians are affected by depression each year. They also say that it is treatable and most people with depression go on to lead happy, productive lives. The Lifeline website is an excellent place to start for information and great advice, including self-help toolkits, quizzes and fact sheets on a range of health issues. Another area of support for those experiencing a personal crisis is Lifeline’s online support chat service from 8pm until midnight every day. For those who might prefer the anonymity of a chat line on their computer, the trained Online Crisis Supporters are there to listen to your situation, provide immediate support, clarify options and choices available to you and provide referrals. However, if you’re in immediate danger Lifeline advises to call 000. Since starting in 2009, the national Black Dog Ride one day event has raised over $600,000 for mental health services.

Meeting new people

Karyn Bretnall and Liz Molloy are active Kysa members and the group’s Black Dog Ride promotion organisers. Karyn says that her first Kysa ride changed her social life completely by giving her the opportunity of getting to know people she wouldn’t necessarily meet. “I now have a huge social circle. We meet people from all walks of life and our common bond is getting together to ride.” Kylie started the Kysa group in 2010 with now more than 200 members who enjoy ladies only rides to places as far afield as Kyogle in northern NSW. The ladies leave from Shark Leathers at Helensvale and they regularly ride to Mt Tamborine and other hinterland locations. They have a ladies ride on the

third Sunday of every month and also learner’s rides and mixed rides and membership is also open to men. “We usually leave around 7.00am in summer and a bit later in winter,” Kylie says, “and we like to be home in the afternoon but you never know what’s going to happen on a ride.” So whether it’s the Black Dog Ride or a newbie ride to Canungra for a coffee, contact Kylie to enjoy all the benefits, social and safety, of riding with this dynamic group. There’s still time to register for the Black Dog Ride and if you’re wondering about the cute Lifeline Winston dog mascot that will be on the front of the bikes, they are included in the $45 registration fee. Bookings for the ride can be accessed from the Black Dog Ride website.

Message from the Mayor of Logan City

Logan: City of Choice Summit During February 2013, Logan City Council hosted the Logan: City of Choice Summit, bringing the community and all three levels of government together to share ideas and put forward solutions to bring about positive change for our city.

This summit presented a rare opportunity for extensive collaboration amongst key groups and individuals who shared their knowledge and expertise on the summit’s five key themes: housing, education, employment, safety and social infrastructure. On day one of our summit, we heard from inspirational guest speaker Stephen Dale, who spoke of the choices he made to turn his life around after a devastating accident. It was also the day where community representatives and the general public came together to discuss, brainstorm and put forward their best ideas and solutions in response to the five themes. On day two, we had the privilege of hearing from Kevin Crompton, the former CEO of Tottenham Council in the UK. He shared with us some tremendous learnings from his experiences, and offered encouragement for our proactive approach in bringing the summit together. Day two was also the opportunity to share with six State Government Ministers some of the key questions and ideas in relation to the summit’s themes. On day three we met with Federal Government representatives, and the community worked to summarise the key findings from their previous day’s activities. I was heartened by the support we received

with more than 1,000 representatives from across our community coming together to contribute their ideas and solutions during the three-day summit and the pre-summit workshops. The issues and challenges discussed covered responsibilities from all levels of government, as well as the community, and it will take all of us working together and making real commitments to collectively bring about positive change for Woodridge and surrounding pockets. With everyone working together and with the support of the state and federal governments we can find ways to give hope for the future for our young people and families through better education and skilling, through hope for employment, hope for lifestyle and opportunity for future home ownership. One of the key outcomes from the summit is the formation of a two-year action plan and it will be in the implementation of this plan that the hard work really begins. Once the action plan has been finalised, Council will meet with both the state and federal governments to look at their respective areas of responsibility and determine opportunities to collaborate and support the delivery of the action plan. Council is committed to working closely with the community, business and state and federal governments to progress the action plan and

ensure that real outcomes are delivered. As Mayor, I want to see opportunities for our youth, young families and all the community, and I want to see a safe and desirable lifestyle for all. I want the world to know about Logan for all the right reasons – our diverse lifestyles, our amazing community spirit, our abundance of greenfield, our great schools, our clubs, organisations, churches and individuals who make a daily difference in the lives of others – all the wonderful reasons why 290,000 chose to call Logan home. I believe with the right support from all levels of government and the community, we will see positive change in our city from this summit, and Logan will continue to grow as the true heart of south-east Queensland. A reminder for locals that you are invited to meet with me and Cr Steve Swenson at our Division 3 Community Chat this month. The Chat for Division 3 residents and businesses will be held at Zarraffa’s, Chatswood Central Shopping Centre, on the corner of Chatswood Rd and Magellan Rd, Springwood on Friday 15 March from 10am until noon. Please come along and share a cuppa with us – I love to hear from our residents and businesses, and these face-to-face chats are a great way to keep in touch.

This old Patty cake nursery rhyme is from 1698, but the resurgence of cupcakes and Patty cakes has been around for at least the last 10 years. You could not have gone to a wedding, baby shower or birthday in the last decade without seeing a tower of these little attractively decorated little cakes. They’re very useful for events as you can make a selection in different sizes, flavours and icings and everyone is happy. But what to call them? In Australia before the 1980s they were called Patty cakes. In more recent times the term cupcake is more common. As a general rule of thumb, Patty cakes are smaller and without a paper cup, made by “greasing” the Patty pan with butter and flour. Cupcakes are larger and use a paper liner to release them from their metal baking tray. Tea cakes are an English name for cupcakes. I prefer the term Patty cakes as it reminds me of a time in the 1960s when my mother would take me to the Shingle Inn for a Passion fruit Patty cake if I had been particularly good.

So we start with a basic recipe —

Icing

• Preheat oven to 180 degrees, grease and flour a 12 x 1/3 cup capacity muffin pan. • Alternatively, for cupcakes line holes with paper cases. • Combine 2 cups of self-raising flour and ¾ cup of caster sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the center. • Add ¾ cup of milk, 125g melted butter, 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla to the dry mix. Use a spoon to combine. • Spoon the mixture into prepared tins and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Cakes are done when a skewer comes out clean. Stand in pan for 5 minutes and then turn onto a cooling rack.

So whether it is a Passion fruit Patty, a butterfly cake, or a chocolate cupcake, the variations and decorations are only limited to your imagination

SATURDAY 2x$1,500 Trebles + Bonus $5,000 in calls

• Beat 150 g softened butter, add 300g icing sugar and the pulp of a large Passion fruit.

Variations • After the cakes have cooled. Cut a circle form the top of the cake, add a dollop of Chantilly cream, cut the circle in half and position on top of the cake like angel’s wings. • Instead of cream use lemon curd. • Add a tablespoon of cocoa to the cake mixture and top with chocolate icing.

A Gluten Free Patty Cake Recipe

• Mix 500g gluten free icing sugar, 200g Almond Meal and 100g rice flour in a bowl. • Melt and cool 300g butter, add to 6 beaten eggs. • Mix all ingredients together with 100g for blueberries and a teaspoon of lemon zest. • Pour into 12 large muffin tins with paper liners. Bake 180 degrees for 50 mins.

Variations

SATURDAY NIGHT

• Instead of blueberries and lemon, try raspberry and white chocolate.

International Women’s Day The United Nations’ theme for this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration on Friday 8th March is one that has caused quite a stir in politics, the media and women’s groups recently, writes Wendy Johnson. The theme is about gender and the slogan outlines its focus — “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.”

The Gender Agenda:

Gaining Momentum Prime Minister Julia Gillard gained worldwide media attention with her nowfamous “misogynist” speech to parliament last year. Many women cheered, if not the actual speech but the sentiment behind it. And while the actual term means “hatred of women” and the number of men who would openly admit to that view would be limited, there is still an underlying worldwide trend of subjugation of women by various means including: sexual discrimination, denigration, violence and sexual objectification.

In many parts of the world including Australia, women are still not paid the same as men for the same work; they are not represented in equal numbers in business or politics. Women’s bodies are constantly used to advertise inappropriate products and the media continues to objectify women in their headlines and coverage. Universally, women’s education, health, and violence against them, is worse than that of men. And while violence against women is abhorrent to Australians it still happens worldwide and in every suburb, town and city in Australia. Domestic and family violence can start as intimidating behaviour to control, or dominate or to instil fear. It doesn’t have to

be physical abuse. Emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse are often unrecognised by others. Anyone can be affected by domestic violence in our community regardless of age, race, religion, economic status, location or gender. Globally, six out of ten women will experience some form of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. So while in Australia International Women’s Day is seen by many as a celebration of achievements, there are still mountains of equality to climb. This International Women’s Day, the focus in Australia is a nation-wide effort to empower women and girls and end poverty and violence. We all have a right to live free from violence.

Logan City Women in Business leading the way! One group of local women is empowering themselves to reach their full potential and at the same time work for the betterment of others less fortunate. Logan City Women in Business (LCWIB) is more than a simple networking group. They reason that being successful needs to be shared with groups such as the Cancer Council Relay for Life and Caring Women United in Logan. Helen Baily, Tina Litte and Tracey McGuiness form the co-ordinating committee of LCWIB. “ The aim of the group is to offer support to other likeminded women who are facing the day to day challenges of being in business, “ Helen says. “We regularly raise funds for local community groups, and are passionate about supporting the Logan community. In keeping with this year’s International Women’s

Day theme LCWIB will be fundraising for the Life 2 Project. LCWIB member Jane Leach, is the founder and project director of Life 2 dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence Jane says that domestic violence is at epidemic proportions. “There are many contributing factors and mainstream services cannot cope with the overwhelming demand. Government is currently spending more than $13 billion on domestic violence response and, incredibly, funding is being reduced for many services.” Tina Litte, says, “The group has grown from strength to strength since its inception, because of a simple recipe of genuinely wanting to support each other in business, keeping costs to a minimum and creating a relaxed, professional but informal atmosphere.”

Getting started

My Hobby Books

patchwork and quilting

Sometimes I feel like I should go to a meeting similar to AA, but one designed for quilters with a fabric addiction, and believe me, most quilters I know do have fabric addictions, writes Shaaryn Griffiths.

However, unlike most addictions it is generally not harmful to others, but can give much love and comfort. My most frequent advice to beginning quilters is: “Be a project quilter, not a process quilter”. And by that I mean, only buy enough fabric for the particular project on hand, and try to finish one project at a time. Don’t be like me, and so many of my friends, who have a cupboard full of quilts in the process of being made. It is much easier on the wallet and the psyche to start and finish one quilt at a time. It is also easier on your cupboards and your family.

For beginners

If you are starting out to make a quilt and haven’t made any patchwork before, my advice is to find a local patchwork and quilting shop and see if they have any beginner’s classes. And my further advice regarding beginner’s classes is to

southcitybulletin.com.au

Schmidt, Denyse, Quilts (Chronicle Books, 2005). Very modern quilts, some quite plain, but which inspire you with ‘wow, I could do that!’. Turner, Judy & Rolfe, Margaret, Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles (That Patchwork Place, 2002) A fabulous book for a beginner, using very simple but effective shapes to create truly interesting quilts.

Internet

http://flossieteacakes.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/ tutorial-how-to-make-patchwork-quilt.html http://themodernquiltguild.com/ http://www.favequilts.com/ Beginner-Basics

find a class that has you make a whole quilt, from beginning to end, with no steps left for you to finish off afterwards. A beginner’s class should help you master the basics. Here’s how I learned: 1. In my first classes I learnt how to cut out and then sew fabric back together again, in the process learning how to handle a rotary cutter, quilting rulers and self-healing mats. 2. Next I learnt how to hand-piece and machine piece my patches and strips into pleasing arrangements. 3. Then, how to put them all together to form a quilt top. 4. After that I went on to learn how to sandwich the quilt 5. And ultimately how to quilt it and bind it. A good beginner’s class will teach all of these basics and, in a few short weeks, you should be

showing off your quilt to family and friends. I would advise you to find a class that teaches you to make a simple quilt, one of strips or of one very simple block repeated, such as a Rail Fence pattern (see www.flossyteacakes.com.au). The ‘Modern Quilt movement’ has many simple but bold quilts that are relatively easy to piece and striking to look at. I would advise any beginner nowadays to Google ‘Modern Quilts’ for inspiration and search for local patchwork and quilting stores who offer these classes. I’d also advise you to ask your local quilting shop if there are any groups who meet on a regular basis that you could join. Such groups are a fabulous resource with a wealth of knowledge to tap into. And most quilters are really nice people who generally also love to eat cake, so morning or afternoon teas alone are usually worth going for!

Families

Beat the blues!

Positive thinking goes a long way One in five people will be diagnosed with a mental health issue in their life. This may come with shock, shame and denial, and for some individuals, a terrible feeling that they will never escape from the dark cloud above their head, writes Stephanie Azri.

Even without a clinical diagnosis, most of us are guilty of thinking negatively from time to time. Rest assured that this can be challenged and improved with the following positive thinking exercises: 1. What worked well today? Make a note of naming “what worked well today” every day. This may be at dinner time with the family or in a diary just before bed. It may feel difficult to name positive things when we feel down. However start small; you may be grateful it didn’t rain or that you got to listen to your favourite song on the way to work. Being grateful for what we have is the key to happiness! 2. What am I looking forward to today? Wake up wondering what you could be looking forward to on this day. It may be looking forward to going out for lunch, for a day off

or simply for the opportunity to go and watch your child’s school presentation. It’s much easier to wake up in the morning when there is something to get up for. 3. Set goals. Setting goals is one of the most important, basic, therapeutic exercises I encourage my clients to do. Again, without a sense of purpose, we may question our existence. Our goals may be short term, long term or purely for fun. It really doesn’t matter for as long as we are working towards something that makes up feel worthwhile. 4. Surround yourself with positive energy. Whether it is a need to de-clutter, listen to uplifting music, or bring more light into the house; try to invite positive vibes around you. Limit interactions with the ones who bring you down and increase your social activities with those who support you.

n a g o L o t w e N

The Allergy Free Shop - Browns Plains Naturopath and Clinical Nutritionist Marianne Fernance, and Eric Fernance, a Nutritionist and Remedial Massage Therapist have just celebrated five years in business at Passion 4 Health with the opening of their new Allergy Free Shop, writes Suzanne Walker.

5. Talk to others. Talking about our worries can be highly beneficial, the key being in talking to the ‘right’ people. For example, talking about things with a good friend can make us feel better but after a while may strain the friendship. Become aware of who you can access to talk about your thoughts. It may be your partner, a relative, a good friend or it may need to be a professional. Bear in mind that those good exercises will not be enough for those who suffer from a clinical mental health issue and those individuals should be encouraged to seek support from a medical practitioner. However, we should remind ourselves to spring clean our negative thoughts from time to time! After all, if we think about it hard enough, I’m sure there’s plenty we can be grateful for! ________________________________

All the extras

Marianne and Eric know how hard it is to avoid major allergens in food, so everything in the shop is Gluten Free, Soy Free, and Casein free. The only exceptions are a few yoghurts which contain a small amount of Casein. This is a real find for those people who suffer from a range of conditions including Celiac, Allergies, Eczema, and IBS.

A few treats

The Allergy Free shop, although small in size, is a real Aladdin’s Cave when it comes to variety. There are items specifically targeted towards the kids so they don’t feel like they are missing out on some fun food, as the shop stocks biscuits, chips and slices that are nut, soy, gluten, dairy and egg free. For the adults there are treats that include dried Blueberry and Goji Berrry coated in 70% Dark Chocolate that are made locally in Cooroy. There are also delicious “activated’ walnuts from Kitz and Dr Superfood’s organic roasted almonds in premium smooth dark chocolate. Marianne sources her products from local suppliers to ensure freshness and low food miles.

Dinner ideas

There are products that allow you to put together an easy dinner, for example, Kitz Crackers from Tweed Heads paired with Gluten free Dairy free dips, followed by Casaler Gluten Free Pasta, paired with Ozganics Pasta Sauce. Ozganics also make a wide range of sauces for dinner, from Moroccan Spicy Lamb to Butter Chicken. In the freezer there are pizzas that are allergen free as well as ice cream by Cocoluscious which, apart from being delicious is vegan, raw and allergen free.

The Allergy Free Shop also stocks an extensive array of wholefood supplements, such as superfoods and sprout powders including organic beetroot, and broccoli and blueberry powders. There is also a large range of condiments and spices, Tamari, apple cider vinegar, and balsamic vinegar. Marianne says that Flavoured Stevia Drops are a useful way to encourage kids to drink more water. The shop also stocks an excellent range of personal care items including organic liquid soap containing no synthetic foaming agents and lemon myrtle soap and bath soaks. The Allergy Free Shop is located at 21/ 8 St Judes Court, Browns Plains — Monday to Thursday 10am -7pm and Friday 9am – 5pm. The Passion 4 Health clinic is also open during these hours and offers a range of naturopathic, remedial massage and beauty services. ________________________________

Get Rid Of Stress,

Get Rid Of Fat

When new clients come to see me specifically for weight loss, they inevitably ask me all sorts of questions relating to nutrition and exercise, writes Pat Rae.

The Burning Soul can be reserved for collection from any of Logan’s nine libraries or by visiting Logan City Council Libraries’ online catalogue at www.logan.qld.gov.au/libraries Love to read? I

nterestingly enough, no one ever asks me about relieving their stress levels. I find this concerning because stress is one of the most significant factors when it comes to gaining body fat. So, why does stress contribute to gaining weight and how can you reduce your stress levels? Cast your mind back 50,000 years or so and ask yourself what did hunter gatherer man have to stress about? In short it was being eaten or starving to death. To cope with these two stressors, evolution gave humans a built in self defence mechanism. When these two scenarios presented themselves to us, all sorts of physiological things happened inside us. You may have experienced a few. Ever find yourself walking late at night and without warning feel on edge? The hairs on the back of your neck stand up, your pulse starts racing and all of a sudden you can see more clearly?

N

ow that chocolate is back on the “good for you” list there’s simply no excuse not to treat yourself to the best chocolates in Australia, and they’re made right here in Logan. Linda Bos, managing director of Poppy’s Chocolates at Beenleigh has an enviable track record in the chocolate industry. Using only the best, coverture chocolate, a mix of cocoa and cocoa butter and not the compound chocolate used in commercial chocolate bars, Linda and her team of chocolatiers make the most exquisite creations. Her chocolates are especially made for the Versace Hotel at the Gold Coast and the Convention Centre in Brisbane as well as a number of five star hotels and restaurants around Australia. These are seriously good chocolates. Located in Beenleigh since 2006 after a move from the northside, Linda decided early on that she would only make the best chocolates for a few reasons. First, the market is saturated with cheap chocolate, and she knew that she could create a deluxe range of individual chocolates that would appeal to everyone from kids to chefs. Linda loves chocolate. “You know the saying, do what you’re passionate about and you won’t have to work, well chocolate is my passion,” Linda says. “When I was in high school my best friend and I used to make chocolates and sell them. Funnily enough I caught up with her last year after a very long time and she is making chocolates in Sydney.”

Poppy’s difference

Linda says that using cocoa butter instead of vegetable fat makes all the difference. However, it’s a very complex process as cocoa butter has five different types of fat in it; they all melt at different temperatures so you need a lot of skill to make a good quality chocolate. Recently they started using an Australian made chocolate made in the Belgian style. It’s very smooth and her enthusiastic customers know that Poppy’s Chocolates are much smoother than any supermarket chocolate. “We were one of the first to produce coloured

chocolates in Australia and we are definitely the best. For us, they must taste as good as they look. All the chocolates are made fresh and only real fruits, nuts and liqueurs are used,” Linda says. So you’re probably wondering about the health benefits of chocolate, and is it only dark chocolate. It seems the benefits are that chocolate is full of anti-oxidants and that’s not only dark chocolate. A study released in the UK pointed to all varieties of chocolate as being beneficial but that the main problem is overindulgence. The mega-slabs at the supermarket only encourage binging. Linda’s solution is simple, buy her quality chocolates and enjoy the superb taste without ruining your waistline.

Retail

While most of Poppy’s business is wholesale, the demand for Linda’s chocolates grew to the point that she opened a shop and a viewing area where you can watch them being made by her team of chocolatiers. If you buy a quality boutique chocolate from anywhere around Australia the cost would be around $2.50 each but Poppy’s premium chocolates are around the $1.00 mark for a world-standard chocolate. “Just the smell of good chocolate makes people happy,” Linda says, “and when our customers come into the shop they’re instantly happy.”

April 20 - May 20 This is mainly a quiet month for you when you will just want to get lost in your imagination, go to the beach and maybe help someone out having problems. Your energy will increase later in the month and you can enjoy more outdoor activities.

STARS March

May 21 - June 21 Your energy will continue to be below par this month, with not everything going according to plan. Check all the details when travelling and meetings etc or there’ll be mixups. Later in the month you’ll have more help from family and friends.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20 This is your month so enjoy it. Your ruler Neptune is in your sign so opportunities will increase to do the things you like. Early month there could be an upset with a relationship but don’t let your imagination run away with you. Everybody loves you and if you’re celebrating expect amethyst, silver and music.

ARIES

Mar 21 - April 19 With your ruler moving into your sign mid month things will heat up. Do plenty of exercise to avoid unnecessary arguments. If you’re having a birthday later in the month there’s fun and games and outdoor celebrations, and a business idea could take off.

CANCER

June 22 - July 22 Early in the month is pretty good for you with all the Pisces energy around, another water sign. But later on the Aries energy is not really your cup of tea. Don’t get mixed up in any disputes, do your own thing and everything will work out.

LEO

July 23 - Aug 22 With your ruler in Pisces most of this month your energy will be reduced. A good time to just read, listen to music, escape to the beach and don’t take any risks.Later on things will look brighter. Enjoy some outdoor entertainment and try to exercise more.

Aug 23 - Sept 22 With Mercury in Pisces there could be some confusion at work or in your community. Leave any important decisions till things look clearer. Stick to a routine and take time out to relax with reading and music, jogging or walking.

Sept 23 - Oct 23 With Venus in Pisces most of this month you won’t feel like doing too much even meeting up with friends. Don’t make any major decisions around finances as there’s confusing influences. Later on there will be more challenges and maybe a business opportunity.

From P18

Now this was great 50,000 years ago but what are the chances of 21st century western civilised man being eaten or starving to death? Zilch. But we still have plenty of things to stress about. In fact, we stress thousands of times more than hunter gatherer man ever had to deal with. Picture this: Your alarm doesn’t go off, meaning you’re late for work. There’s no hot water and your teenage son drank all the milk last night and there’s none for your morning cuppa. The drive to work is compounding your lateness and your boss yells at you for missing an important meeting. Sound familiar? As far as your body is concerned, you’ve just fought off five sabre toothed tigers and its only 10.00am.

Technology

Getting the most out of Facebook for Business No longer just a trendy online forum used predominately by teenagers to find out the latest gossip, Facebook is quickly making its way into the business world, writes Tina Litte.

acebook business pages, which are separate to your personal profile page, are a fantastic tool for business and have many potential benefits for your business, which can ultimately lead to increased sales and profits. Your business page will be visible to all other users on Facebook, putting your business name and your brand (and potentially your products and/or services) in front of millions of people. Facebook enables easy, informal communication between businesses and customers. With a single post, you can reach all of your followers at once – a feat that is nearly impossible with other marketing tools. Your Facebook business page is also a free avenue to advertise and network, making it ideal for small to medium businesses with a limited marketing budget.

Your Facebook presence

In my ‘Facebook for Beginners’ course, I encourage class participants to look at Facebook as another form of networking. It is very effective for a range of business outcomes: • Build relationships and educate your customers. You can use Facebook to ‘talk’ to existing and potential customers by posting and receiving messages. • Use Facebook to gather feedback from your customers. Ask them what they think about your products and services. If they love them, others will want to jump on board and you will know you are on the right track. Altenatively, if they make complaints or raise issues, then you can use this feedback to iron out any kinks and to make your business even better. When legitimate criticisms are addressed openly, tactfully and in a timely manner, you may even turn an unhappy camper into a loyal customer. • Invite your Facebook followers to road test new products or new business ideas that you are developing before rolling them out? You will be surprised at how many people are willing to try something out and freely give their opinion. This interaction can also help establish and build relationships with potential

and existing customers. But the big bonus is that you may release a new product or service that meets your customers’ needs and something that your customers really want to buy. • Share information related to your business that is actually useful or interesting to other users. It cannot be all about sales or continuous blatant self-promotion. Your followers will quickly tire of that kind of treatment so think about what they need and what they would like to see posted on your page. • Sharing good quality and relevant content increases your credibility and promotes your business by building longterm relationships with other Facebook users. For example, a veterinarian could post tips for looking after pets, timing them according to when particular health issues arise (e.g. ticks in summer). Be creative with your content.

Along with the benefits to your business, interacting with others on Facebook can also be fun!

he Romero Centre was established in 2000 by the Brisbane Sisters of Mercy as an inter-faith organisation committed to social justice. As asylum seekers remain in the spotlight and politicians wrangle with policies, it’s places like the Romero Centre that act as a crucial support service for new settlers to Brisbane. Originally a drop-in centre for refugees, the centre now provides many more services including settlement support, legal and advocacy services, citizenship preparation, school holiday programs for our younger settlers, a women’s sewing group, as well as free English language classes for refugees and asylum seekers Raising community awareness about human rights and information about asylum seekers and refugees forms part of their outreach program. Rebecca Lim, a migration practitioner and community worker had the bright idea to create a calendar with photos of her personal and community networks in their national costume. In her private work, Rebecca travels overseas regularly and each year chooses an organisation to support. It’s usually one that assists girls to escape from sex trafficking in SE Asia. She raises donations from her friends and networks and uses the money to assist grass-roots level organisations. Last year, Rebecca travelled to Mumbai in India and to Chiang Mai in Thailand to support community groups assisting sex workers and girls at risk of being trafficked to help prevent them entering the industry by giving them an education and work experience.

Colourful national costumes The calendar idea came up after last year’s International Women’s Day when the Romero Centre held a fashion parade with fashion design students from QUT, and Romero Centre members wore their national costumes. “I wore my grandmother’s Sarong Kebaya from Malaysia and I thought photos of migrant women and women from refugee backgrounds in their costumes would make a great calendar,” Rebecca says.

With the oldest model being 92 years of age wearing her national costume from Cambodia, the calendar will showcase, gender, age and diversity. It has been created entirely by volunteers including Rebecca as the coordinator supported by a small group of friends, models, and staff and volunteers of the Romero Centre. “We want to sell the calendar for $10,” Rebecca says, “with half the proceeds to go to an organisation overseas or Australian organisation with

overseas programs and half will come back to the Romero Centre.” The colourful calendar will feature photos of beautiful women in their national costumes including African, Burma, Pacific Islands, Malaysia and Poland. The useful 18 month calendar will run from July 2013 to December 2014. To be launched on March 5th at the State Library at Southbank, just 1000 calendars are being printed and will be available for purchase through the Romero Centre. The centre is located at 20 Dutton Street, close to the Dutton Park train station and open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm.
