A person’s smile tells you a lot about them, instantly. Sue Hartley’s smile is warm and welcoming and you know that here is a woman who has a lot to give, writes Wendy Johnson. Sue’s childhood and teenage years were turbulent. “Growing up in a single parent family, with no financial support for my mother, and no family to help through this difficult time brought many added challenges and stresses,” says Sue. “I grew up in a very isolated and lonely environment with no positive role model and consequently made poor choices and decisions. I remember from an early age thinking that one day I wanted to make a difference to help young girls in some way. Even that brought doubt to me as I thought, why should I have a voice when I had such a messed up life. Women can get very stuck in their inadequacies and think we have nothing to pass on.” As Director of Daughters of Promise, Sue has come to know that for a woman to reach her full potential she must nurture the strengths within.

The journey begins

This dream to help young woman kept coming back to Sue every so often and, as she works in education, she has had girls around her constantly. About 13 years ago she did a tour with a group of students. “The teenage girls really reminded me of myself at that age. They were having the same struggles and challenges I had experienced which was evident in the choices they were making, and how they felt about themselves. I was challenged at that time to do something to help them, instead of being judgemental.” Shortly after Sue knew it was time to begin to write the program now called Daughters of Promise to help young women find their value and worth, and reach their full potential. “I have a strong faith in God and could not have done this on my own. I remember clearly sitting at my computer and the program that we still run today, although it has developed and grown, came together. I asked some women who had the same desire to support young women that I knew if they would be willing to talk on subjects relevant to young women — sexual integrity, choices, the media and how it shapes our ideas of womanhood, value and worth, — all those things that shape our viewpoints.”

Role models

Sue finds that 12 or 24 is a great number for the seminars as it’s a very personal, intimate journey. “It’s very much a shared experience. I have 22 women on the team now who are willing to be honest, open and vulnerable and southcitybulletin.com.au

share their experiences of life. They are an amazing group of women who have walked through many different experiences but have learnt to rise above them and live life not as victims, but as women who have overcome their past experiences. I have great respect and admiration for each of them. We work very hard to develop a healthy, strong team and create a safe place where women can grow.” Now in its eighth year Daughters of Promise is run for girls as young as 12 to the oldest so far, at 74 years of age. Sue says that every seminar is different, sometimes it’s just young ones sometimes older ladies and sometimes there’s a mixture of different generations. “It’s amazing how many young women are looking to connect with older women for a role model, who don’t have any and are too afraid to ask. Life is healthier when the different generations learn to encourage, support and share life together.”

Tailored programs

Daughters of Promise seminars have been presented in state schools, private schools and within the community. The content moves and changes throughout the seminar according to who is present and what their need is. “We can do a seminar for girls who are “at risk” , for those who are very experienced in life, and we can move it to girls who are very young.” Sue says. “We give them tools for success and talk through issues so that the girls can make good choices before they become issues. We’re really celebrating what it means to be a woman.” A recent program was a four day Daughters of Promise camp partnering with Queensland Prison Fellowship at Kindilan Campsite at Redland Bay for young girls whose parents are in prison. If you’re passionate about Logan and think that bringing about positive change and strengthening the community is our responsibility, you’re sure to enjoy participating in an Open Conversation, writes Wendy Johnson. Ian Hunter and Mary Sayer from Open Conversations are facilitating a series of nine events in various locations around Logan to address some of important issues that affect our lives. Whether it’s about workplaces, transport, youth, government, education, employment or neighbourhoods it’s not too late to get involved. The first two Open Conversations topics looked at aspects of Creative Community Leadership and Creative Ageing both well attended events that sparked conversations around pressing needs and simply nice-to-have options.

Accessing collective wisdom

Ian says that the conversations bring together practical people, learning from each other, creating their own resources, identifying their own problems and forming their own solutions. “It’s a self-organised gathering on a topic about which all attendees have passion.” After an initial briefing the participants create discussion groups according to their interest in the topic being explored. The benefits of this process include discovering possibilities in seemingly impossible situations while ascertaining what is important to the community. The sessions share the community’s intelligence and wisdom through connecting people from diverse backgrounds, interest and points of view. Each discussion group explores the issues surrounding their topic and then looks for solutions or action points. The entire process is collaborative and gives participants the chance to have their views heard.

Strengthening the community

Mary Sayer says that the recent Logan Summit demonstrated the fact that when people come together to explore options and solutions and they come with passion and commitment to do that, positive things happen. “Open Conversations is a new locally-based service that wants to build on the initiative of the summit in connecting people and strengthening our community. Through structured talks, individuals and communities, listen, learn, discuss, and shape ideas and actions at ‘Ground Zero’ – where it counts for them.” Supported by Logan Mayor Pam Parker and the Logan Chamber of Commerce, the events are guided by proven methods in getting the best out of group processes. “We value respect, honesty, openness and humour with the participants as part of the experience,” Mary says. As professional facilitators, Ian and Mary have a wealth of experience in presenting leadership,

education and community seminars. “We love to create and generate innovation with people, organisations and communities,” Ian says. The next Open Conversation will be on Creative Workplaces on 15th May. What could a creative workplace mean for you, your children or grandchildren or in your workplace? What is your point of view? Open Conversations are a free to the public event and everyone is welcome to attend by registering. _______________ Mary 0429 648 714 Ian 0434 282 748

The Good Life

- at Seasons!

There’s nothing nicer than having the choice to start the day with a freshly made morning tea, especially if someone else is doing the cooking, writes Wendy Johnson. If it could be followed up with tending the vegie garden, feeding the chooks and playing with your dog you’d have to think you were onto a good thing. Or perhaps you’re after something a little quieter; a coffee in your library or maybe a quick surf on the internet might be next on your day’s agenda. So where are all these choices happening and how can you get access to what seems like a stylish club? Well it’s not a club, Seasons at Waterford West is home to a growing community of senior citizens who are smart enough to see what a great place it is to live.

At home

In an idyllic setting on Tygum Lagoon with landscaped gardens and outdoor pavilions to take in the lovely view, the residents at Seasons have a multitude of choices for enjoying their day. The best part is they know they can have as little or as much care as they need. They can choose to cook or not cook, do their own cleaning or have some domestic assistance, even 24 hour in home

southcitybulletin.com.au

nursing care when it’s needed. It’s all flexible and there for the choosing and the clever part is that they only pay for the services they use. And to have a state-of-the-art 24/7 hour emergency response facility certainly gives peace of mind for the residents and their families. The one and two bedroom private apartments are very stylish and comfortable with a timeless appeal and come with a lovely balcony or courtyard. Whether they choose to catch up with friends at the café, take in a movie at the on-site cinema or a walk around the lagoon the residents can have as much socialising as they wish. Barbara Booth, the community manager says that they hold concerts a few times a month. “The whole community comes out and we keep encouraging our residents to take part in community life. It’s so friendly here. The residents don’t sit in their apartments alone, they come in for a coffee and the staff are always ready to say hello and have a chat. I love talking to people, you’ve got to be a people person to be in this industry.”

Seasons’ resident Mavis has lived there for about a year now and loves it. Coming from Ingham in North Queensland, Mavis was getting a little lonely on her own. “My sons said they had found a good place for me and it is. I like the library because I’m a reader and if I need any assistance at all I only have to go to Barbara and it’s fixed.” With four sons Mavis cooked for many years and now they have returned the love by paying for her apartment and all her meals.

Updating the Bathroom

“It was wonderful to see these young women successfully work together to complete the Daughters of Promise program which ran in conjunction with a challenging outward bound course. We are not counsellors, but network with other organisation that can offer counselling or specialized assistance when needed.” In July the seminar will be going back to Ipswich State School for its third year. “When we go into a school or church I require at least six of their leaders to come on board and journey with the girls and build relationship so they can continue to mentor and work with them.”

With so many renovation programs on television showing us how to get the house of our dreams, make every dollar work and avoiding DIY disasters, we’re on information overload, writes Wendy Johnson.

Significant Woman In November 2012 the second seminar program was launched for Daughters of Promise. Sue says that with four years in the planning and titled Significant Woman, this program has a biblical base and is an interactive experience connecting mind, soul and spirit to God’s original intention. “God has placed destiny and purpose on the inside of each of us. Our life is actualised when our authentic self converges with our purpose.” The Significant Woman seminar will be held on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June at Calvary Community Centre at Carbrook. Sue says that the weekend will be an interactive and experiential seminar of prophetic

teachings, revelations and insights which will empower women to stand in who they are created to be. “Women have been given the precious gift of conceiving, nurturing and bringing forth new life, so why do we devalue women. We all have something very precious and beautiful inside us and so often we forget how precious we are. Inside every woman’s soul there is a rose, show her the rose, she will conquer the thorns.” Daughters of Promise is a fully accredited and recognised not for profit organisation, that offers tax relief for businesses or individuals who would like to donate to this work among young girls in our community.

The problem with many of the programs is that they are made overseas and the materials, regulations and sizes are for overseas conditions. This is especially true for shows from the USA where imperial measurements such as feet and inches are still used. The same can be said for sourcing renovation information on the internet. Make sure your browser is set for your region as you want to spec out your new bathroom in metric and to Australian standards.

Experts or DIY

The easy option is to call in a bathroom renovation company. With lots of design experience they have all the hands-on know-how to handcraft the bathroom of your dreams. They will undertake all the necessary stripping out of old tiles, baths, toilets, ceilings and walls and manage the tradespersons.

You will still need to decide on the style and colour of the fittings. Thinking we can do a DIY bathroom is tempting. Surely it cannot be too difficult to pick out the colour scheme, a few taps and tiles. But hold on there, the shopping is the easy part. There’s a whole lot more to a bathroom renovation than we realise at first glance and mistakes are notoriously expensive. Have you thought about the plumbing and electrics? With a bathroom renovation it all comes down to one factor: are you going to move the

plumbing? This is the single most important aspect of the reno as moving plumbing can double the price of a new bathroom. The ranges of pre-assembled flat-pack bathrooms at the big box stores like Ikea and Bunnings are huge with many choices of finish and internal fittings. Both have online 3D programs so you can enter your bathroom’s dimensions and choose the cabinets and fittings to get a good idea of what it will look like, and more importantly, cost. But beware — any house more than a few years old will have settled on its slab or stumps and a flat-pack modular bathroom may need considerably tweaking for it to fit into the dimensions of your room. The least expensive option is to leave all the plumbing in situ and renew the bathroom with all fixtures and light fittings in the same place. Highgrove Bathrooms at Underwood have some

excellent options to update your bathroom starting with ceramic and glass basins from just $69, mixer taps from $59, toilets from $129 and shower enclosures from $499. It’s amazing what a difference just new tapware will make to a bathroom.

Asbestos dangers

Before starting stripping out the old walls make sure you have your bathroom tested for asbestos. Asbestos was used in construction from 1945 until 1980. Many of the homes in the Logan area are around 40 years old and while not constructed out of asbestos it was a popular choice for lining bathrooms. The problem with asbestos is not removing it but cutting and transporting it. Inhaling asbestos is the danger but disease is unlikely to result from a single exposure. Be safe, call in an expert.

Glorious winter puddings

Gourmet

As the weather turns cooler our thoughts turn to shaking out the winter woolies and comfort food, writes Suzanne Walker. Sticky Date Pudding and Apple and Raspberry Crumble are very adaptable recipes — they can be made to serve small or large groups, as well as in advance, or in the hour before dinner. Team them up with a versatile caramel sauce or a dollop of cream (or both!) and you’ll have them coming back for more every time.

Apple and Raspberry Crumble

Caramel Sauce Warning: Be very careful the mix reaches very high temperatures and can cause bad burns. Don’t let children make this sauce.

Sticky Date Pudding Take 340g dates, add 600ml boiling water and 2tsp of bicarbonate of soda, set aside to cool slightly.

Put 340g sugar and add 2/3cup of water in a large pot and put on a high heat. Stir until sugar has dissolved or the mix has started to boil. Don’t stir after this point or the mixture will crystalize. Watch the sugar mix, Do Not Walk Away.

Cream 120g butter and 340g sugar, then add 4 eggs, one at a time.

When the colour starts to change, gently move the pot until the desired medium brown colour is achieved.

Add 340g self-raising flour alternately with the date mixture.

Remove from heat and be careful as the mix is now 400 degrees.

Put in a lined 26cm cake tin and bake for 90 minutes at 180 degrees.

Place the pot on a heat resistant bench or trivet; add 80g of butter, to arrest the caramelisation process and 600 ml of cream. Stir with a long handled wooden spoon whilst pouring in the cream to minimize the risk of burning.

The cake is cooked when a skewer comes out clean. You could use two smaller tins or a large rectangular or individual muffin tins. Any pudding excess to your needs can be frozen for a later date.

This is a fantastic sauce that can be kept in the fridge for 10 days or even used as the base for Burnt Caramel Ice cream, if you have an ice cream maker.

This dessert is by far the easiest dessert to make and definitely child friendly. First the crumble: Take one cup of flour(for gluten free use rice flour) and 1 cup of sugar and rub in 150g butter. Feel free to add in an extra cup of anything that you like either oats or coconut. Then place an 800g tin of pie apples in a heatproof container, I like to top with a handful of frozen raspberries and then the crumble mixture. Bake in 180 degree oven for about half an hour or until top is brown. Serve with ice cream or cream. Variations: Instead of tinned apples, stew 5 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped in 100ml of water. Use any tinned, frozen or fresh fruit that you have to hand such as peaches, blueberries, boysenberries or raspberries, in addition to the base fruit of apples or pears. Good Luck, Keep Warm and Bon Appetit.

Pam Parker

- Message from the Mayor of Logan City Logan City is strategically located in SouthEast Queensland and is the sixth largest local government area in Australia by population. Our city’s population has grown by a massive 316% since 1978 when the city was first established, and has a current population of over 287,000. We recognise the importance of growing a strong economy in Logan, particularly to support the more than 200,000 new residents expected to move here in the next 20+ years, largely through our two new model cities – Flagstone and Yarrabilba. If we are going to rise to this challenge, it is vital that we grow and support our local businesses as well as look abroad to bring new investment to Logan, so that our current and future residents and their children can continue to work, live and prosper here.

Growing

a strong economy in

Logan

More and more, we are seeing the tight fiscal climate affecting budgets at all levels of Government, and we are not immune to this reality. Significant commitments to infrastructure are harder to come by, and we must work smarter if we are to ensure that our economy and job market continues to grow. In April this year I participated in a delegation to China to build and strengthen economic relationships between Logan City and identified target markets within China. This trade mission aims to increase business investment in our region by attracting high value-adding and suitable international businesses to our city. Some of the broader outcomes we are anticipating from missions such as these include employment growth across our city, increased investment from international companies, a more diverse local economy, and a stronger profile nationally and internationally for Logan City. Whilst we continue to look for suitable overseas investments, we are also seeing major businesses still making the choice to relocate or expand in Logan City. And why have they made this choice? Location, real estate, workforce advantages, and proactive support from Logan City Council. Logan City is ideally located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and is connected by major transport corridors including national highways and rail. Our city is currently only 18% urbanised, and even after expected population increases, 60% of our city will remain rural,

semi rural and conservation - what an enviable position to be in. Logan City also continues to perform well in our region with strong economic credentials. Our economy generates $8.742 billion in Gross Regional Product annually and has an estimated 21,000+ businesses. Key industries in our city include manufacturing, retail and wholesale trade, health care and social assistance, construction, transport, postal and warehousing. Our predominantly young workforce profile is also attractive to businesses with 66% of Logan’s population under 45. Our existing business base generates an estimated 72,000 jobs and our already diverse economy has the potential to grow and diversify further while adding a stronger focus on the digital economy and emerging industries. Logan City Council is also renowned for its can-do attitude to supporting businesses to grow and invest here. The Logan Office of Economic Development is council’s dedicated team for attracting and assisting investors, and supporting businesses to grow and prosper within our city. They work with businesses and investors so they can realise the competitive and strategic advantages of our growing economy. A strong economy and jobs for residents, our great Queensland weather, our abundance of affordable land, and a council with a progressive attitude all adds up to Logan City being an ideal choice for families and businesses alike.

Technology

Twitter:

formula for success Twitter might be just another part of the World Wide Web phenomenon, but what is special about it is the way it has gathered together so many voices, writes Amanda Greenslade. If you’re the kind of person who has time to dabble in social media enough to get hooked you probably already know all about Twitter. However, if you’re too busy to sit at your computer, if you’re a small business owner or a bit challenged with technology, you may prefer to get some basic advice on how to succeed with Twitter.

Global chat

Many people say they don’t use Twitter because none of their friends or family use it. By saying this they misunderstand the technology. Twitter is not like Facebook or LinkedIn where you build on your existing (face-to-face) network. Rather it is about shared interests and conversations that are happening right now. Twitter is a global live chat room where everybody gets to have their say. It is a broadcast in that it goes public and international straight away, making it even more powerful than any single aspect of the media. Most interactions on Twitter are public, which is different to other social sites like Facebook. “Tweets” also have to be short (140 characters to be exact), which reduces the waffle factor. Because of this sometimes when you read tweets it can seem like you’re looking at another language. Everything seems to be in code, with hash tags, “@” symbols and strange-looking hyperlinks.

Following tweets

If you follow too many people you will find your home feed becomes a slush pile of irrelevant and confusing messages from people with their own agendas to push. However, if you carefully choose who to follow, and regularly remove people who spout garbage, your home feed will be the best place for you to go at any time for upto-date news on topics that interest you, people to chat with, and local events or incidents. The best way to learn Twitter is to use it. Spend at least half an hour each day, just as you would check your emails. Find and interact with people who seem interesting. Avoid spammers and organisations that are not relevant to you.

Follow Twitter accounts that are in your industry or share your interests. To find them simply play with the search feature. Introduce yourself by tweeting to people (using the @ symbol and their username) then pay attention to the conversation during the next 12 hours by looking in your @ Connect screen (button up the top).

Marketing tool For small businesses the formula for success on Twitter can be broken down into eight steps: 1. Follow people in your target market 2. Post relevant messages using # tags and hyperlinks 3. Tweet people using @ 4. Follow competitors 5. Visit your feed and interact with people (have your say in 140 characters) 6. Run a campaign/special that you can track such as “Mention Twitter for a free drink” 7. Present a fun persona online — be memorable 8. Do steps 1–7 every single day for 1–3 hours You will start out with no followers but by doing the above, and being genuine and relevant, people in your target market will start to follow you.

Safety on Twitter

Be aware that what you say is public and instantaneous. Unless you have millions of followers the repercussions of saying something rude, derogatory or defamatory are slim, but it’s not worth the risk, so try to be polite. Being controversial may be a way to gain interest from others, but use this tactic with extreme caution, and preferably get some legal advice first! ________________________________________ Amanda Greenslade | @greensladecreat Greenslade Creations—The Zap You Need To Succeed www.greensladecreations.com

Look After

The Person Who Has Looked After

You!

Sunday May 12th is Mother’s Day. This Mother’s Day why not take the opportunity to look after the health of someone who has looked after your health for years? Many of the health problems associated with ageing can in fact be prevented through correct diet and lifestyle. Unfortunately however, the slowdown in metabolism and reduced performance of the digestive system means the elderly are often at higher risk of health complications related to nutritional deficiencies.

Stroke & Cardiovascular Problems

Stroke and cardiovascular disease are among the leading causes of death in Australia.

southcitybulletin.com.au

Regularly monitoring and controlling blood pressure is an important part of assessing and reducing risk. A well-balanced diet is important to control blood pressure. Make sure to regularly include good fats from oily fish that contain omega 3 essential fatty acids, and foods high in magnesium, such as green leafy vegetables. Celery, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, and garlic are all great foods for lowering blood pressure naturally and can easily be included in cooking or smoothies. In addition, nutritional supplements based on a type of fish known as bonito, are available from your Naturopath or Nutritionist. Bonito peptides have been found to work in a similar fashion to many of the pharmaceutical medications used for high blood pressure.

A common fear associated with ageing is the loss of memory due to Alzheimer’s disease. In fact dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is now the third leading cause of death in Australia. There is a strong connection between Alzheimer’s disease and both insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. Controlling these two factors can help protect sensitive brain tissue and keep cognitive function during ageing. Following a simple Mediterranean dietary pattern that emphasizes intake of healthy polyunsaturated fats, whole foods, and is low GI, is a great way to help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels. It is also important to reduce intake of refined carbohydrates from bread, pastas, and sugary snacks and drinks. A doctor can refer for blood tests to show whether systemic inflammation is a problem for you. While it is important to correct any underlying causes of inflammation, herbs such as turmeric and rosemary can help reduce inflammatory markers without the side effects of longer term NSAID use.

Macular Degeneration

It’s sad to think that our parents may not see their grandchildren. Unfortunately vision loss is a common part of ageing. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common visual condition associated with ageing and impacts 1 in 7 Australians over 50. Like Alzheimer’s, consuming a low GI diet that is high in protective omega 3 essential fatty acids is an important factor in preventing AMD. Body weight and smoking are also major risk factors for development of AMD. This Mother’s Day take the time to help someone you love cultivate good lifestyle habits. ____________________________ Marianne Fernance is the owner of Passion4Health a Naturopathic clinic in Browns Plains. T

he question you should be asking is, “How can I afford NOT to?” Why do airlines make you put your own oxygen mask on first before fitting your child’s? It’s because if you don’t, chances are you’ll pass out while attempting to help fit your child’s and if your child is young or too small to fit yours, then you’ll probably pass out. In short, take care of yourself, so you can take care of your children. This is the same attitude you must adopt when it comes to fitting an exercise regime into your day. There’s 168 hours in a week and you only need 4 hours a week to exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That’s less than 2% of your available time. Can you spend 2% keeping healthy? Here are my top five time saver tricks for the exercising Mum —

1. Shop less. Meal time in a household can be chaotic, but add grocery shopping to the list and now it’s a full blown mission. Checkouts at supermarkets have to accommodate people shopping every day for dinner. They pop in

My Five Top Time

2. Slow Cooker Meals Are The Bomb. Get yourself a slow cooker. Having used your meal plan simply chuck the required ingredients in it before you head out the door, set the timer and forget it. As you walk in the door that night, you are greeted with the beautiful aromas of a dinner all ready to go and have saved yourself upwards of 3.5 hrs a week in cooking time. 3. Be prepared for exercise. The key to getting a training session in is to be prepared. Have your gym clothes, towel, water bottle, pre and post workout snacks ready to go. If you like to train early in the morning, but the cold is getting to you; sleep in your gym gear. That way all you have to do is leap out of bed when the alarm goes off and away you go, saving yourself at least two hours a week. 4. Share the School Drop offs/Collections. Set up a drop off and pick up roster with the other Mums at your kid’s schools. That way while one is doing the drop offs two or three of you could be at my studio getting in a sneaky PT session. You all take turns sharing the collection and at the same time you’ll reduce the number of cars in the busy school car park and reduce green house gases.

the

on the way home, buy something that appeals to them (usually in a box) and then head home to re-heat and eat. Spend some family time preparing a weekly meal plan and then shop twice a week. You save upwards of four hours per week, by not having to stop in at the supermarket every day.

Exercising Mum

5. Keep It Short, Sharp & Simple. I train every day but for a maximum of 45 mins. Short intense bursts of energy, followed by quick recovery periods are great for speeding your metabolism and burning fat when you’re sleeping. 45 mins x 3 times a week is only 3 hours a week.

One of the questions I’m often posed from my Mum clients, especially those juggling a busy lifestyle, work, home and kids, is, “How can I fit in the time to exercise?” writes Pat Rae.

So why don’t you give us a try by purchasing one of our kick Start Packs for $79.95. Professional

The décor at Bella Diamonte’s salon is as warm and welcoming as Julie-anne herself. There’s nothing minimal or cold here — simply luscious products, tranquil treatment rooms and down to earth treatments that nurture not only the skin but the person too, writes Wendy Johnson.

Julie-anne Faranda Bella Diamonte’s Beauty Therapy

Julie-anne’s philosophy means that she wants her clients to be able to come to a professional salon in Springwood that has a warmth and friendliness about it. “Beauty therapy is a very intimate business and can be quite intense,” Julie-anne says. “Some new clients are a little shy at first and I can understand that, they soon relax and realise that we have their concerns looked after.”

Custom treatments

Whether you need a facial to pep up a tired complexion, waxing, skin rejuvenation or more concentrated therapies such as a non-surgical facelift or skin penetration treatments, Julieanne will start with an in-depth consultation to find out how you feel about every aspect of your skin and then customises her treatments to suit your skin type and needs. Her facials include a massage to face, neck, décolletage and shoulders and you cannot help but surrender to Julie-anne’s firm but sensitive touch, just the right amount of pressure to be effective but not intrusive. Julie-anne wants to provide a haven, for women to have somewhere they can come where they can feel comfortable and not be pushed into buying product. “That’s not my style. Sure the sales are great but that’s not what drives me, it’s getting results that are more important. I can confidently recommend my products as I use them myself, and I am very passionate about the ranges I carry. They all work well but you will find that your skin will tell you what it likes.”

mothers and daughters to have treatments at the same time especially her beauty package treatments. Her All Day Getaway package includes lunch, a full body aromatherapy massage and scalp massage, deep cleanse facial, deluxe manicure and pedicure and eyebrow wax and tint and eyelash tint. Taken over four hours this is the ultimate getaway. “It nurtures the total person and most ladies say at the end, do I have to get off the bed now,” Julie-anne says.

Mother’s Day Treats

Numerology With Dawn Alice

Mother’s Day an ideal time

for family healing!

Have you ever thought what it would be like to live on a deserted island? Would loneliness set in? How long would it take to die an emotional death from lack of social nourishment? The number three contains sustenance needed for social growth. The number three tarot card, the Empress, is a representation of a mother figure providing essential nourishment. The optimistic feel of this card encourages social gatherings and family events, with an emphasis towards nurturing and family healing.

Families

Families don’t have to be blood related; we all have people in our life with a spiritual connection stronger than blood relatives do. Kinsfolk are important, no matter what their shortcomings may be. They can be exasperating, but we cannot do without loved ones to share our special moments. If you are holding hurts within your family, then the unconditional love of the Mother Empress encourages you to heal your pain. Being indignant only creates resentment, which eats away like cancer. Ask yourself, do you feel bitter, jealous or envious towards any family members? Are you harbouring guilt from situations you may, or may not have had control over? If so, you may find this meditation a healing experience.

Family Healing Meditation – an extract from the book, Life Love Tarot 1. Close your eyes; relax. Imagine yourself in the garden of the Empress. 2. Take a few deep breaths; welcome the scent of the flowers. Within this garden is a clear pond that you can see your reflection in. This image is looking back at you with unconditional love. Blow your reflection a kiss. 3. Now imagine this pool filling with impressions of your family. 4. Which relations are in the pond? Send each and every one a kiss. 5. Imagine any family members who have been separated from

you through hurt and pain. Direct your unconditional love and forgiveness towards them. 6. Watch their faces light up with happiness as they receive your gift of healing. 7. Mother Empress hands you a seedling to plant. This tiny shrub begins to grow before your very eyes. Watching it rapidly producing abundant vegetation gives you a sense of the love in your heart. You are reaching out to those who have hurt you, or you have offended. 8. To empower this meditation, you might like to buy a seedling to plant and nurture.

However you spend Mother’s Day, give a thought for those who are estranged from loved-ones. If you are lonely and alienated from family, consider doing the meditation above and a healing will occur. What an ideal Mother’s day gift! Enjoy the journey and remember to 'Love your life!' ________________________________________

The Tax and I

The way to improve your tax position is to make applicable claims against your taxable income. A deduction is generally allowable to you provided: a) it has nexus/connection to your income earnings; and b) you have the substantiation/receipts to be able to prove your claim. There are exceptions to both these rules of course! The biggest concept to understand is that your deduction will improve your tax position by the highest rate of tax you have been charged, e.g. a $100 deduction at your tax rate of 32% will improve your tax position by $32, not the full $100. Making sure that your claims are all you are entitled to, or being certain your claims are correct can be difficult and experienced judgement may be required. Therefore you should always consult a fully qualified professional to assist you if and when needed.

southcitybulletin 052013

It’s not something anyone likes but tax is necessary to run our roads, our hospitals, our schools and other public services. So we should all pay our fair share of tax — but what is considered ‘fair’? In Australia, we pay tax everyday with items we consume, generally via the goods & services tax (GST) but there are numerous consumer taxes. Additionally there is the income tax that is levied on individuals, companies and some trusts including super funds. It is based on the taxable income of the individual/entity. The most common form of income tax is individual tax. Every individual is taxed at the same rates but the rate will vary depending on the level of income. There is a sliding scale and for each dollar over the next threshold, a higher rate of tax will be charged. This ranges from 0% to 45%. On top of this sliding scale, we may also be charged a Medicare levy, a Medicare surcharge levy and a flood levy! If you are paid as an employee, your required tax is generally deducted from your payment using these sliding scales. If you have overpaid your tax, then this should be refunded once you lodge your annual tax return, if you have underpaid then you will have tax payable once you lodge your annual tax return. The system is designed to refund you in the range of $100 annually, so there is certainly room for error if your circumstances aren’t ‘usual’.

Without wanting to sound ungrateful, I live in a house that appears to have been designed only for the summer months, writes Stephanie Azri. The small lounge room and the non-existent kitchen space are such a contrast with the large swimming pool surrounded by a nice backyard and relaxing patio. Consequently, as winter approaches I dread the gloomy swap of the cooler months with a forced retreat inside the house. However, there should be no reason as to why autumn and winter could not be associated with their own type of fun! Family time is important and should be created all year around, so let’s consider some of the equally enjoyable family activities available to us in Logan as we swap our beach towels for woolly cardigans. Here’s six suggestions to help us enjoy the next few cooler months!

Bowling

- This can be a reasonably affordable outing with many ‘shop-a-dockets’ offering discounts for our local bowling lanes. Children as young as three or four can join in and participate in this family game.

Indoor play centres

- These can be the younger children’s haven with obstacle courses and jumping castles galore. This can be a perfect place for parents to catch up as thay watch on – even go on a date!

Rock or rope climbing

- A great and challenging activity for families of older children. With a couple of local venues offering good deals, these two can be a fantastic way to bond between siblings and parents alike. Why not challenge each other to a climbing duel?

Winter months – can be fun too!

Theatre, movies and plays

– Exposing children to different cultural experiences has been proven to assist with self-esteem, resilience, and social skills as well as general well being. Take your children to shows. Whether it’s a local stage play,

Reserves, parks and forests

– Whether your family organises a picnic, a bike ride, a game of soccer or simply a nice walk, this free family activity is bound to be refreshing. Perfect for the cooler months, why don’t you visit your local park? Logan has some great parks.

Board, card and other inside games

– What have Pictionary, Uno and Hide & Seek got in common? They are all physically passive games that a family can share together. Rainy and cold days can inspire us to remain indoors, however with a bit of motivation the TV does not have to be the first option on your family weekend list. As we slowly move into the winter season, let’s enjoy the feeling of peace and mindfulness that it brings. I invite all of us, myself included, to allow ourselves to be in the moment and enjoy this time as individuals and families. TAURUS

April 20 - May 20 With Venus moving into Gemini this month you’ll have more mental energy and might even consider taking on a new course of study. There’s a lot of luck later in the month maybe around a neighbour or close relative. If you’re celebrating a birthday, combine pampering and travel with fine dining.

GEMINI

May 21 - June 21 With Mercury in Taurus early month you can relax, put your feet up and count your money or assets, go for a bushwalk or dine out at your favourite restaurant with some close friends. Later on you will have to get back to work, but if you’re having a birthday take a trip up high somewhere to celebrate.

A new love which started as a friendship will come as a surprise. Later in the month you’ll be run off your feet, and your leadership will be needed.

Aug 23 - Sept 22 The first half of the month will be quieter than usual, but there could be some resentments or jealousies surfacing too, with your advice and help needed. Later on you could be busier than usual running around from place to place, take some time out to relax, go bushwalking, or catch up in the garden.

Sept 23 - Oct 23 You’ll continue to be concerned with finances, possessions and valuables early in the month. When Venus moves into Gemini later on you can resume your social activities, with gifts and happiness around a celebration and possibly a long journey. Try not to overdo the talking or you might lose your voice!

Oct 24 - Nov 22 Early in the month you’ll want to get back to nature, enjoy some bushwalking and maybe create a masterpiece with natural products. Don’t forget to pamper yourself though and go shopping for a new wardrobe. Later on, a new position or promotion could involve writing or talking more.

Nov 23 - Dec 21 You could be searching early in the month about your history or ancestry, don’t forget to get outside for some exercise, or try your hand at singing. Later in the month you’ll be travelling and communicating more than usual, double check all arrangements and details or there’ll be mixups.

Dec 22 - Jan 20 This is a good month for you when your partner and friends will be in sync with your plans and goals. There is a air of determination and perseverance around and with the help of others you will succeed. If you are travelling or flying anywhere later in the month it will be a welcome break.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21 - Feb 18 Early in the month you might feel as if you are stuck in a rut. Don’t worry, by mid month you can spread your wings and maybe take off to somewhere different. Meeting new people and making new friends is in your stars with all the Gemini influence around, and possibly a new romance developing.

PISCES

Feb 19 - Mar 20 Early in the month you will be happy to join in with others in artistic activities, and all work activities will go well with sensible Taurus in your court. Later in the month things will speed up which might not be to your liking, double check all arrangements, and relax in between with your favourite pastime.

ARIES

Mar 21 - April 19 With Mars transitting Taurus right through this month you’re in a more introverted mood than usual, and may just want to revise your current situation both relationship wise and financially. Later in the month things will speed up around you and there should be some happy news coming your way.

Are you running a social club, sports club or charity organization? We can help by posting your activities for you free! Simply send your information to editor@southcitybulletin.com.au by 16th of each month for next edition of South City Bulletin.

Book Review The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

APPs &

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”

ROBOTS

Join Bilbo Baggins as he is whisked off on an incredible journey by Gandalf the Wizard, to join the company of Thorin Oakenshield in the quest to reclaim the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor from the Dragon Smaug.

Look into the future — where do you think we will be? The fact is no one really knows, writes Resa Zekants.

This much loved classic has thrilled millions of readers since its publication in 1937. Due to the popularity of The Hobbit the publisher requested that J.R.R Tolkien write a sequel. Fifteen years later The Lord of the Rings was released and continued to expand the world created by Tolkien in The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings was adapted into a highly successful movie franchise by director Peter Jackson. Jackson is now turning The Hobbit into a movie trilogy, the first of which was released in December 2012. The next instalment, The Desolation of Smaug, will be released in December of this year. Amanda – Logan North Library

The Hobbit can be reserved for collection from any of Logan’s nine libraries or by visiting Logan City Council Libraries’ online catalogue at www.logan.qld.gov.au/libraries Love to read? I

n cartoons and blockbuster films the concept is that the world and everything in it will be computerised; flying cars, holograms and robots. Directors and writers play on the idea that computers and technology will somehow grow a brain and think for themselves, then take over the world. These concepts of the future may be correct, looking upon recent developments.

Constant innovation

Industries, households and everyday items in Australia are being transformed by robots, artificial intelligence and computerised technology; overall ruling out human interaction. Because technology is always transforming and being updated, it is hard to keep up. We will often just get used to one thing and another will come along and take over. With the innovation of smartphones, tablets, newer gaming devices and social networking sites; people can pretty much do anything, anywhere, at any time. It seems there’s a mobile app for everything from paying a bill, to buying and selling on eBay, to organising concert tickets or catching up with friends on Facebook. Social Commentator, Simon Dodson believes new technology is about staying attached. “The more you don’t participate the more irrelevant you feel. And it’s your fault. Any new technology is always great but as it ages it has less benefit and becomes detrimental to your cause. Simply any new tech is great until it gets old. The only really amazing technology worth of note that is immediately important and present today is TV and the internet.”

Google Glass

There are so many new ideas and technologies with some being convenient and others completely pointless. Later this year Google will launch Google Glass, currently being trialled. It’s a high tech headwear piece that is basically a wearable computer. The glasses can run apps, record high definition video and are operated by voice. They can provide the weather forecast, directions and send messages. An online demonstration video shows how it works, you can ask it to remind you of dates, give you the directions of a new store and take photos; all while you’re walking down the street. However like most new inventions, Google Glass has come under some harsh criticism. With professionals and consumers saying it will be the end of privacy. Others saying that it will distract users from reality and that it is dangerous. A pointless Google invention includes a talking shoe, which says things like “it is a beautiful day today” and “that’s awesome”.

More than a car phone

Chevrolet has just released a new car that is completely immersed in technology. Like most new cars this one has a colour touch screen command centre that plays music and movies, and GPS directions. It also has a voice activated system and Bluetooth with a difference, you can plug in your iPhone and text or email without using your hands. With the appropriate app on your iPhone you can also unlock your car if you accidently lock your keys in it. That’s not all, if you have an accident the car’s command centre will send for help and can pinpoint your exact location. Technology is doing some amazing things and the world may just end up like a futuristic movie.

Culturally Diverse Microbusiness Development Project A new small business project managed by Logan based community group Multilink Community Services Inc. will help unemployed or under-employed people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to establish microbusinesses.
