JUNE 2013
Sometimes all it takes to get us back on our feet is a kind word, a gentle smile and the offer of genuine and practical help, writes Wendy Johnson. CentroCARE, part of CentroCentre at Beenleigh, may have only been operating since late last year
but already they have got all their priorities in place — feed the hungry, clothe the poor, house the homeless, support the family, train the jobless, share the gospel. Sounds like a tall order but not for the focussed team at CentroCARE who are keen to share the services they can provide. Their motto of “Helping people find their way” is shown in three of their top programs: the clothing shop, the food hamper program, and Night Light, as well as their Sunday church services held at Beenleigh PCYC. “One thing I’m especially proud of is our range of clothes,” says Senior Pastor Mark Kujawa, “especially the kids’ stuff. When you look at the shop it’s lovely and the quality of the clothes is very good and very inexpensive.”
Food Hampers
The food hampers are all good quality foods, all in date, and cost just $20 which also includes a voucher for $10 to the local butcher for 1.5kg of fresh meat. John and Michaela Porter, the Community Care Directors, are proud to say they take advantage of the food hampers. “We are trying to reshape the mindset of buying a food parcel,” John says. “It’s all good fresh food, and anyone can have a hamper, you don’t need to be down on your luck, it’s especially aimed at middle class families who are struggling.” The food parcels are great value and often come with a great piece of advice from John. “We have a lady who came in who was quite distraught. She has two kids and said she had nothing and wasn’t going to get paid for three days. So we gave her a food parcel to stock her pantry and said to her come back in three days and buy another one so that your pantry is full so that in two weeks’ time you’re not in the same position. She now comes in every week and is now in a position to buy some clothes too.” The team buy the food wholesale, using Foodbank and other outlets and also have a box at the church where people drop in nonperishables. The food hamper packing is run under professional food handling conditions at the Beenleigh shop and purchasers are assured of CentroCARE staff’s strict attention to hygiene and proper stock rotation. Michaela says that they have people coming in who buy a hamper to give it away, to bless someone else with it. “People come in here to pay it forward, they say here’s my $20 give a hamper to the next person who doesn’t have any food.”
Night Light
John is also the man behind the Night Light program. With a team of four to six volunteers John visits locations in Beenleigh on a fortnightly basis to offer a cuppa some doughnuts or a pastry, maybe a food parcel or toiletries and in this weather sleeping swags, blankets and jumpers. They make connections with people who may need counselling or accommodation or a doctor and aim to benefit the community by promoting local businesses and staff to give back to the community and care for residents. John says that life can take some unexpected turns at times and some people may find they need help in times of crisis. “Our fully equipped street van goes out into our community a couple of nights a week. We go to boarding houses and parks and before our first visit simply knock on the door introduce ourselves and leave a brochure and say we will be back later that night. We started very simply with just giving out a can of Coke and a doughnut and built it from there.” Michaela says they love to go out into the community and just be there for people. “It’s really simple, no catch,” she says. “We have some people who want to pay for their cuppa, especially the elderly. They just want a cuppa and a chat.” Pastor Mark says that their philosophy is that every person is precious. “We go with God’s passion in our heart and that is our purpose.” CentroCARE welcomes volunteers and donations. There are many ways you can help by donating good quality clothes, furniture or non-perishable food items or supporting Night Light to keep the van on the road. Supporting the Beenleigh community is their focus and their joy and they’re offering an opportunity for everyone in the community to become involved. So, why not drop in!

Andrea Collins, BDW Springwood store manager, says that there isn’t a day that passes that someone comes in to ask if they’re open to the public. “They think by the name that we only supply builders and nothing could be further from the truth,” Andrea says. “The name is very deceiving. We have retail customers coming in here asking if they are allowed to be in the shop. That’s what our ground floor space is all about, for our customers to come in to see, touch and feel the products.” Builders Discount Warehouse can handle any size job for renovating the home. “We offer free measure and quotes for kitchens, draw it up and work closely with the client. We will rip out the old kitchen and fully install the new one. We stock all types of flooring, tap ware, baths, showers, and complete kitchens including installation and appliances.”
JUNE 2013
Builders
Andrea says that they work closely with builders who may for example, have a 50 unit complex project. “Once a client has purchased their property the builder sends the client to us to choose the paint, tiles, benchtops, carpets or timber flooring that they want. They will be given a budget by the builder according to specification of the property they have bought,” Andrea says. So what about all those home reno shows on television? Andrea says that The Block series has been the worst show for them. “People see something done and then come into the shop and we have to tell them that it’s not how it’s done. We will ask them how old their house is, is it on a slab or stumps. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes on The Block that make it seem like anybody can do a full reno but a lot of times it’s worth getting in a professional to do the job, for that peace of mind. But if you want to do it yourself we can give you the best advice.”

An intimate
Wedding
at home!
Having a wedding reception at home can be an intimate relaxing family affair that allows the bride and groom to spend quality time with all of their guests, writes Suzanne Walker.
W
hether you can host a wedding at home will depend on a couple of factors — what size is your home and how many people do you want to invite, and what type of food you would like to serve. An average size home would be perfect for a wedding of around 25 people. This allows room for people to mingle and if the weather is too cool or raining the party can be seated inside. One of the nicest weddings that I have ever been to was a “bring a plate” affair. The wedding ceremony was held at home with a celebrant. Guests bought a selection of food such as quiche, salads, finger sandwiches and fruit pies that were placed on a buffet for consumption straight after the nuptials. It was a relaxed fun day that was a small celebration with family and friends.
DIY wedding buffet
Alternatively you might like to ask just a few family friends to help prepare a wedding buffet. Try to stick to a menu that is not complicated and can be prepared ahead of time with minimal effort on the day. A cold weather menu could include an entrée of soup, followed by a buffet of warm dishes served in a bainmarie, for example Beef Stroganoff and Chicken a la King served with rice and vegetables, followed by either the wedding cake or an Apple and Raspberry Crumble for dessert. All of these items can be prepared well ahead of time (at least a month or two) and popped into the freezer until the day before the wedding, defrosted in the fridge and heated after the ceremony. A menu for warm weather could be as simple or lavish as a cold seafood buffet and a cold glazed ham served with salads, followed by either the wedding cake or Pavlova.
Alternatively you could serve just canapés and drinks, or even invite people back to your place for drinks and wedding cake. Don’t forget you’ll need extra plates, glasses, cutlery, tablecloths and serviettes. Tables and chairs can be hired for the weekend, allowing you time to set up and take down.
Catered “at home” wedding
If catering your own wedding sounds a bit daunting or you wish to have a plated meal instead of a buffet, a caterer can be employed. You will still be restricted by the amount of people that can comfortably fit in your home, but the pressure of feeding your guests will fall to someone else. Weddings do not have to be big lavish affairs that have an invitation list of hundreds and cost more than a deposit on a house. You can have a relaxed affair in your own home, tailored to your own personal taste, surrounded by your closest family and friends without it costing an arm and a leg. Congratulations and Bon Appetit!

Even when I was little I followed the race horses and the Melbourne Cup, and I had always dreamed of being at a big race and now it’s come true. We lived in suburban Sunnybank when I was young and there was an old horse that lived behind us and we used to brush him and sit on him. When he died we got Meg. She was a bit rough but to us she was beautiful. Mum made my first pair of baggy jodhpurs and I wore gumboots as I didn’t have the proper outfit for pony club. Where we are now at Waterford was an old run down dairy farm, we used to put our horses here over the summer and then the property became available and dad bought it. Then I got more serious with show jumping competition and just before I went to Europe in 2002 to compete in the World Championships dad said he was going to give us a present and I said I wanted a new stable block. I had a few other horses to bring on and compete in shows and that’s when I met my husband Peter. Between us we have represented Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics games, three World Championships (1994, 2002, 2006) and a World Cup final in 1996. In 2006 Tony Noonan from Melbourne was up here for the racing carnival and he
needed somewhere to spell his horses over the winter. He sent six horses here, then someone sent horses to pre-train and that’s how our business Kolora Lodge started. It’s now a world class stable complex and we breed racehorses. We didn’t get a bid on Real Surreal at the Magic Millions auction sale so we were stuck with her. When Katie PageHarvey said they were going to put a Women’s Bonus on the Magic Millions race I thought we would race her. I asked my mum and Holly to go in with me so whether she was good or useless we would have an outing to the Magic Millions with her. We didn’t sleep all week. I said to Peter and dad, I thought she might get third or better. Getting close to her race I started to get a bit nervous. After the start she was out the back and I thought she had no chance. There were 16 or 18 horses coming down the home straight and before I knew it she was in front of me and when I looked again I could see she had won. So my horse, bred here at home won the Magic Millions. I saw it with my own eyes but I couldn’t believe it. When the jockey came back to scale and the media crowded around I knew it was real.

VISIT LOGAN

Logan Loves Volunteers Pam Parker Message from the Mayor of Logan City
L
ast month I had the honour of hosting some of Logan’s unsung heroes at the annual “Logan Loves Volunteers” breakfast. It was an opportunity to recognise in a small way the enormous contribution that volunteers make to our city. It was a celebration of those who give freely of themselves and ask nothing in return, and it was a wonderful way to recognise the important role these people play in our community. While it may be true that no one person can solve all the world’s problems, what our volunteers do is make their corner of the world just that little bit better. From the more easily recognisable volunteers such as the SES to the countless many whose caring deeds go unrecognised by the wider community, they are all part of a special group of people who give their time and energy to helping individuals and causes day in and day out. In many ways, volunteers are the glue that holds a community together – they fill the need where funded services don’t reach.
They are the ones who assist the elderly and disabled, read to children, serve meals to the hungry, mentor our youth, run our community sports, care for our environment and support people in their time of need. Our communities would not be the same without them. The latest statistics indicate that 36% of the Australian population participates in volunteer activities each year, which in Logan City’s context represents over 100,000 people! Statistics also suggest that people who volunteer in their youth are more likely to volunteer in their adulthood. We need to nurture giving, caring and sharing with the next generation so they continue the legacy of volunteering that makes for such a great city. I want to thank the many thousands of volunteers in our city for their tireless commitment and generosity. They are the reason why I boast about our community spirit where ever I go, and as we grow and prosper in the years ahead we must never lose this community spirit. I am so proud of our volunteers - they truly are Logan City at its best.

Families
Healthy lifestyles for the whole family I am blessed to be working amongst a team of fantastic professionals with exciting and different backgrounds, writes Stephanie Azri.
O
ne of my colleagues, Amy, is our local champion. The down to earth dietician willingly gives us regular tips to live healthier lifestyles in a very non-judgemental way; she sure would never comment on my motherly frustrations of a Friday morning and freely shares her own battles with chocolate, so better than anyone else, she understands that sometimes the theory can be different from the practice. More than ever, it’s lovely to see that healthy lifestyles include frustrations, treat foods and normal people. Using Amy’s tips, let’s see if we can implement some healthy choices in our daily family lives.
1. Do NOT ban treats, occasional junk
food or label particular foods as ‘bad’; Children can quickly develop negative emotions such as guilt, shame, confusion for liking foods which are associated with negative labels. Not only are those emotions detrimental for children and adults alike, but there are NO foods which are completely bad. It’s about teaching our children about balance.
2. Make physical
activity a part of your family’s life. Again, it’s not about doing ‘exercises’ for an
hour every day, it’s about including movement in routine tasks. For example, walking or taking the bike to school, dancing with your children, competing in a family singing competition or planting a herb garden are fun activities which will improve your lifestyle as a whole.
3. Plan! A lot of our unhealthy habits stem
from our lack of planning. Whether it’s quick dinners or lunch box snacks, with a bit of organisational skills, these could be improved. For example, rather than buy potato chips for lunches, why not buy a large bag of pretzels or unsalted popcorn and pre-pack them in zip-lock bags? The same applies with dinners; meals like lasagne, Shepherd’s pie or vegetable bake can be pre-made and frozen or assembled the night before.
4. ‘Parent provides;
child decides’ This new research trend states that forcing children to finish all their food prevents them from becoming aware of their own appetites and hunger cues, impacts on obesity and weight gain and could lead to mental health issues around food. However, without children being provided healthy choices, this is going to fail. Therefore, this must become a team effort with parents providing healthy options and children learning about their choices.
The final important point for parents concerns their need to lead by example. If parents live unhealthy lifestyles, or obsess over diets and exercise, children are bound to role model this behaviour. However we must remember a healthy lifestyle includes balance, as well as both good and not so good moments. It also includes many other factors which are unrelated to food and exercises, so make sure you include fun, love, outings, discussions and time out in your new family’s healthy lifestyle! ________________________________________ Stephanie Azri is a Clinical Social Worker and local author of various books. Wedding & Function Venue
etting married is certainly a milestone event in anyone’s life and creating the perfect wedding will be uppermost in our mind, we want to get it just right. With so much to consider, from “the dress” to cars to your vows, at times it seems everything transpires to make it stressful. The key is preparation. Sounds easy but you’d be amazed at the number of brides and grooms who leave important items until the week before. So, unless you plan to elope, here are the top three tips to a hassle-free wedding —
The Ideal Venue for Your Special Day
• Private venue • Exquisitely decorated Chapel with a seating capacity of 85 guests • Two beautifully appointed function rooms seating 30-140 guests • Extensive menu to please every palate • Priced to suit all budgets
1. The picture-perfect ceremony. Once you
have set the date, decide on the type of wedding that appeals. Church, garden, beach, at home, or registry office, the options are endless and no doubt you will make your choice based on either family tradition or what appeals to you as a couple. Popular churches can often have a waiting list for Saturday weddings, and for beach weddings make sure you get council approval. A competent wedding celebrant will have lots of information about the legalities and how to create the perfect vows. By law there must be witnesses to your marriage and these people are usually your best man and the matron of honour or chief bridesmaid. How many attendants you decide on comes down to whether you want to include family and friends.
2. Set a realistic budget. We’ve all heard of
celebrity weddings costing mega dollars but for those of us with budget limitations the number one tip is make a detailed list of every item that you want to feature in your wedding. Don’t forget to include little things like new underwear, cabs and parking fees for trial hair and make-up sessions, meals on the run, even extra costs on your phone bill

of your dreams for the seemingly hundreds of calls you’ll make. Decide early on what you will pay cash for and what will go on the credit card. Remember that many reception venues and car hire firms require a substantial deposit on booking and your attendants will need to be clothed, so decide who will pay for their outfits and if they will have any say in what they wear.
3. A wonderful wedding reception. Whether
it’s a gourmet meal at an upmarket hotel or a barbeque in the back yard you will need to feed your guests. Hotels and reception venues traditionally serve either a three course meal as a sit-down service or buffet. The amount of “service” your guests receive will determine the cost per head. Alcohol can add considerably to your bill. Most venues will have a dedicated wedding event planner who will be able to give you all the package details. If you decide on a home or garden wedding consider outside caterers. An easy but classy reception idea is simply delicious wedding cake and champagne.

How to look hot for your wedding!
Tax and My Business
Having had the benefit of been married twice (the first time was a practice) I know that planning a wedding can be a stressful time in your lives, although I must confess, being the male participant in the wedding is such an easy ride compared to the beautiful bride, write Pat Rae.
R
eally, all we blokes have to do is turn up sober, have a clean and pressed suit and say “I do”. The poor old bride can spend thousands of hours planning everything; the dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, the cake and the venue, just to name a few. So why take a chance with skimping on looking your best for the big day? I’ve trained hundreds of brides-to-be during my 20 odd years in the fitness industry and I’ve learned a few important lessons that you ought to know. • Plan your “Hot Bod” Like You’re Planning Your Wedding Day: It takes at least 6-12 months to plan your wedding, so put the same amount of time and effort into getting yourself looking absolutely gorgeous for the big day. Whether you need to lose a few extra kilos, or a whole truckload, it CAN be done, if you plan it properly. Sit down with the right fit pro for you and discuss your goals early. The earlier the better. An exercise and nutritional plan can be easily implemented if enough time is left. • Stick with the Shorter Intense Sessions: Fat loss is usually the primary goal of any bride-to-be I’ve worked with and by far the most successful way to burn body fat is to
16
keep the sessions short, sharp and intense. A gym junkie could cope with a 45 min high intensity sprint session on the treadmill, whereas a newbie might only cope with 15 mins. Whatever your fitness level there’s an intensity for you. An example could include 8-10 rounds of 30 second sprints with a 30 second rest repeated 4-6 times with a 2 min rest in between. • Avoid Long Slow Cardio Sessions: Hitting the pavements for long slow jogs might look right but trust me when I say they’re not the most efficient way to burn your body fat stores. There’s a huge amount of scientific research out there that suggests high intensity interval training is BEST.
W • Have a Stress Release Session Factored into Your Exercise Plan: When the human body gets stressed, the first thing it does is STORE ENERGY and planning a wedding is a stressful event. So, make sure you have regular stress release sessions factored into your exercise plan. Sessions like Yoga, Pilates, Meditation and Stretching are great ways to de-stress and if these are factored into your exercise regime, you’ll minimise the chances of your body leaping into fat storage mode by getting stressed. No matter what your goal is, the right nutritional program is 80% of your plan, so get this right. Most fit pros aren’t qualified to advise you in this field so either find a qualified dietician, or one with the appropriate qualifications. If you focus your efforts on getting your eating right for the big day, then I guarantee you’ll be able to eat anything ON THE BIG DAY. _____________________ Pat Rae Personal Training Springwood www.prpt.com.au 0414 654 372
hen you operate a business the variety of taxes increases. For most businesses you officially become a ‘tax collector’ for the tax office for no reward! Along with general income tax there are goods and services tax, payg (wages) tax and payroll tax just to name a few. It is very important in any business to manage the cashflow so that you can operate efficiently but you must always be aware of your current tax obligations and manage this tax cashflow as well. The best idea for this would be to set up a separate account solely for the purposes of collecting and savings for the tax. You should regularly transfer enough monies into this account to cover 1) your gst collections, and 2) wages tax for you and your employees for the period. Weekly would be ideal. It is also a good idea to put aside any compulsory super at the same time. Small weekly allocations are much easier to find than three months’ worth of tax. This way when your BAS/ IAS comes due to pay, you should have sufficient funds to be able to make the payment, with any excess being put back into the mainstream account of the business. Most businesses are able to benefit from the ability to claim expenses in addition to what they would normally claim as a salary taxpayer. This is because their business exposure is more far reaching and not as limited as it is for an employee.
JUNE 2013
A few tips for year’s end, and to keep in mind year round for business owners: - Prepay expenses before 30
June: at no time should you incur an expense just to get a tax deduction, to do this would reduce your wealth, after the tax deduction you are still generally behind 70c in the dollar, so only spend on items that are necessary to your business or you will require in the near future. You can bring those forward into this financial year and benefit from the deduction earlier.
- Travel allowances: if you happen to travel for your business, check out the daily travel allowances that are available to you. The benefit is that provided you don’t exceed the allowance, you are not required to provide substantiation (tax receipts) for the travel. The daily allowances can be quite generous and range for the different places you may travel to e.g. Sydney daily rate is higher than
Pre-tax and
Bundaberg. There are rules you still must abide by and you may need to keep a travel diary, but it’s certainly a good option for business owners. - Vehicles: you have the option to run more than one vehicle through your business. Private use can be calculated using an ATO formula but keep in mind log books can sometimes provide a better tax deduction.

These days, if you are a professional and you’re not on LinkedIn you risk being perceived as old fashioned, out of touch, or worse, lazy. If you have been procrastinating about using LinkedIn for business and are not sure where to start, here is a brief to do list to at least get you started. 1. Improve your profile Create a catchy heading, improve the information in your past and present positions and create or revise your summary. 2. Ask for recommendations Recommendations are one way to boost your credibility however, this needs to be individuals or companies you’ve truly worked with in some capacity – not just doing a recommendation as a favour. 3. Thank people for connecting Develop a generic email (that you can easily personalise) thanking those that connect with you and possibly adding some extra information about you and/or your business. 4. Join some groups/discussions Groups are a great way to connect with like-minded people and influential names. Find some and join today. Groups in your niche are a great way of being seen as an expert in your field.

Book Review “Be careful of what you inherit! Sadie is drawn back to Poet’s Cottage in the fishing village of Pencubitt in Tasmania following the death of her mother Marguerite. The home originally belonged to Pearl, Sadie’s grandmother, a wild and unconventional spirit, who died violently and in mysterious circumstances in the cellar. The locals say Tatlows are always drawn back to Poet’s Cottage. Sadie and daughter Betty are drawn into solving this menacing and haunting mystery with the aid of the unpublished memoir of Birdie, a contemporary of Pearl. The story alternates between the present day and 1935 with a range of disturbing and mysterious characters, an atmospheric setting on the wild and beautiful coast of north-east Tasmania and and writing style that is both compelling and haunting. Brrr
- time to rug up and snuggle down! Resa Zekants discovers a great book and some yummy treats.
I
t’s time to start rugging up! With the weather becoming cooler each day, all we feel like doing is curling up with a good book to read, a hot cuppa in hand and a yummy hot meal to snack on. First you will need a good book to read. It can be hard to find a really great book, one that you just can’t put down, one that’s interesting and compelling all the way through, but they are out there. It’s always good to check the reviews and comments on the book you want to buy. A heart-warming read and inspirational story is The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez, which is based on a true story. Sunny, an American woman owns a little café in one of the most dangerous places in the world, Kabul. Five women of different backgrounds are brought together; they develop their friendships and support one another. In a country where

women have little support or say, these women have to overcome many different issues, but they grow stronger as a result. One prominent character throughout the book is Yazminda. She is a young pregnant woman stolen from her village, beaten and abandoned. She is forced to hide her pregnancy, in fear of being shamed and killed. Another character, Candace is a wealthy American who is desperate to help the unfortunate children of Kabul, but in the process she is betrayed by a man she thought was ‘the help’ and a man she hoped for a real relationship with. Isabel is a determined journalist trying to get the biggest story of her life. And Halajan, is the sixty-year-old den mother, whose long-hidden love affair breaks all the rules. This book will make you laugh and cry, but it is a very good insight into the lives of women in Kabul. Once you have chosen your book, you’ll need a nice hot drink to go with it. Whether you like tea, coffee or hot chocolate, there are so many varieties and flavours to choose from. Tickle your taste buds with a caramel or hazelnut infused coffee, which you can get from most big supermarkets. You can also get a variety of sweet syrups to add to your drink. With tea, try a specialty store like T2, with flavours ranging from crème brulee, fruit infused teas and liquorice flavour, you can’t go wrong. And for hot chocolate Cadbury drinking chocolate is to die for, or you could make your own using cocoa powder, milk, sugar and a little bit of cream – you can sweeten it up with melted cooking chocolate and pop a marshmallow on top. A scrumptious pumpkin soup will warm you up and is easy to make. Start by frying off butternut pumpkin, onion and potato in a pan, then add water, chicken stock and milk and simmer. Once tender Blend the ingredients together and add cream to thicken it up. Reheat and season with salt and pepper. Serve in a soup mug. Now you’re all set to have a warm, snuggly day in.
Our
fascination with numbers Have you ever found yourself fascinated or maybe puzzled why you see the same numbers continually? Do you drive along in your car and notice number plates on other vehicles? Do you look at digital clocks just at the moment they click over to 444 or 555? Numbers can be alluring!
Numbers dance to the rhythm of Symmetry
Nature is synchronized plants, animals, birds, insects, the rivers, mountains and oceans have all been created to coexist along with us humans. Synchronize means that two or more things are moving at the same time or are in rapport with each other. When earth is in a natural state of unity, all should flow and fall into entireness.
Every aspect of nature throbs to the beat of its own pulse
The palpitation of a bee for example, is in harmony with the plant it chooses for pollination. As stated in Wikipedia, there are over 20,000 known species of bees world-wide. Each individual bee produces honey and wax according to the flowering plant it has resonated with. Different honey flavours will result. Bees not only produce food, but they are food. Kingbirds, mockingbirds and dragonflies feast on bees.
Nature’s connection with angels
Angels will send us a memo through organic energies that are prevalent to our journey. Just as the bee selects the right plant for pollination, the angels know what resonates with individuals. They know our vibrational zip code.
Is it more than coincidence?
Feathers are a common means of communication. They could blow in from nowhere and stop you in your tracks. If you ignore the angelic sign then another feather will appear and so on. This is synchronicity, the same thing happening simultaneously. Once you get the revelation, you then realize that it is more than coincidence. Synchronicity can be through nature, but the angels will use whatever means they have — rainbows, birds, a song playing on the radio, and triple numbers are just a few signals from the angels. Numerology is a universal gift presented as a puzzle. Each piece of information we acquire helps us to flourish and prosper along our pilgrimage.Enjoy the journey and remember to love your life.
