business women supporting ONLY GOOD THINGS CAN HAPPEN WHEN A BUNCH OF BUSINESS WOMEN GET BEHIND A GREAT CAUSE

The ladies of Logan City Women in Business networking group were inspired to action when listening to Florence Kelly, National Program Coordinator of Real Teens Foundation. Florence explained that the foundation was keen to expand their life changing BreakFreeNow workshops into Logan schools. Real Teens Foundation, a national, not-for-profit, non-religious organisation, delivers empowering, lifechanging, interactive workshops for teenagers between 13 and 17 years of age. The ladies heard that the teen years should be filled with wonder, fun and learning but all too often it’s a case of low self-esteem, complexity and uncertainty. Over just a single weekend teenagers in BreakFreeNow workshops have had remarkable results in learning to see themselves in a positive light. Now there is an opportunity for Logan teens to learn to transform those negatives into positive outcomes for their future.

JULY 2013

Logan teens “It’s an experiential workshop,” Florence says, “that is, we have games and processes that are specifically designed to bring up in the teenagers what’s not working for them. They don’t know what’s going to happen next which is the beauty of it, and because they cannot alter who they are our ultimate aim is for them to get to their authentic, true self. We help them to access that by talking about peer pressure. We play the games and how they play those games is how they live their lives and we take it from that perspective.”

The BreakFreeNow workshops are a journey of exploration and discovery that confronts the real issues that teens are facing in general and as individuals. On the Sunday afternoon, parents and guardians are requested to attend the final session so they can gain an appreciation for the journey their teen has undertaken. Parents have reported that a new level of understanding between them and their teen has developed. “During the workshop the teens are challenged to show their selfconfidence,” Florence says. “They are encouraged and empowered to discover and nurture their unique potential, personal power and happiness.”

BEING IN BUSINESS IS NOT JUST ABOUT SUPPLYING A SERVICE OR SELLING A PRODUCT. IT INVOLVES THE STEPS YOU NEED TO DO TO GET TO THAT POINT.

PLEDGES There was no hesitation when Florence finished her story — unanimously, the business women pledged to sponsor a group of Logan teens to attend the workshops. Helen Baily, coordinator of Logan City Women in Business, encouraged the members to dig deep and support a teen individually or by donation. A quick whip-around at the last business breakfast will see five teens sponsored with donations continuing to be received at future business events. Helen encourages all Logan businesses to get behind local teenagers. “This is a great opportunity for teens to learn how to face the pressures of life, deal with family and friends, develop their self-esteem and ultimately, how to achieve their dreams, all in a fun, safe and teen-friendly environment.”

t is important to get to know people and let others know what you have to offer. This is what we call networking. Networking is one of the most valuable business tools you can use. I believe the key is to keep in mind that commitment and consistency are crucial to reap the rewards from networking. When I first started my business I attended many networking events and would often wonder why I was there. Very few results were apparent and minimal business opportunities were generated from the time I spend at these events. It wasn’t until at least six months down the track that people began to contact me and say, I met you at that networking event and now have a need for your service. When people meet you on multiple occasions over a period of time, they get to know a bit more about you each time. People like to build trust with you, particularly if they are planning to do business with you. It isn’t just about them knowing what service you provide or product you sell, it is about building a relationship and building trust.

FACE-TO-FACE NETWORKING EVENTS This traditional form of networking is still very necessary and is the most powerful for building trust. It enables you to put a face to the name. Make sure you have business cards to hand over to new contacts. A great tactic I learnt recently is, if it is a new event, focus on meeting three new people and spend a bit of time with those three people rather than running around like a madman trying to quickly meet everyone and not really getting to know anyone. Following up with an email after the event is also important even if it is simply to touch base.

topics of interest or that will benefit your business. The networking investment is so worthwhile. It helps you get to that amazing stage in business when you can proudly say that your business is based on referrals. So plan ahead, pencil in to attend a number of networking events per month and enjoy them. Cross promote with both types of networking too. Find those you met in person on Facebook or LinkedIn, and let people who you meet face to face also know you are online and keen to connect.

SOCIAL MEDIA This is the new online way to network. Having a business Facebook page, for example, is just like networking. It isn’t a quick sales tool, but is another form of developing relationships with those who are interested in your products or services. Be consistent, answer questions and enquiries and participate. On LinkedIn you can join groups and participate in discussions on

meet: GRAHAM HEMBROW WHEN A CHANCE MEETING CHANGES YOUR LIFE — FOR THE BETTER!

06

At first glance you’d be

forgiven for thinking that Graham Hembrow was the bouncer at the local pub, writes Wendy Johnson. Tall and well-built, with that serious shaven head, it turns out that in a previous career he was just that. But it all changed in prison. Not that he was an inmate; he was simply like the Monopoly game jail card, just visiting! A life changing meeting with a Pastor visiting prisoners set Graham on the same road turning the self-confessed wild child into a church pastor, prison chaplain and university student currently completing a dual degree in social work and theology at Australian Catholic University. Graham is a chaplain with Prison Fellowship Qld, a pastor at The Vine Community Christian Church in Logan and also oversees MOTV8 Men’s Groups.

JULY 2013

When I met the Pastor in the prison waiting room I had been observing him at the prison for twelve months. He would be helping family members and I thought this guy is a bit different. He had the tattoos and had been to prison when younger so he had a history himself. We got talking in 2004 and he shared his story of alcoholism and violence and I thought, hey this is me! And here he is, wearing the scars from beatings, married with a family, a pastor in the church and visiting people in prison. He was the picture of what I thought a Christian might be. He asked me to pop along to a church of my choosing to see what it could do for me. I thought, well here you go, but a light switch went on that day. I had only one friend that I knew was a Christian so I asked him and that’s how I ended up at The Vine Community Christian Church. I had morning tea with the pastor and his wife and the following Sunday I was in church. Now I’m a pastor and my life has completely turned around. MOTV8 men’s group meets in MacDonald’s meeting rooms at Marsden on Thursday nights and Logan Central Tuesday nights. As long as the store is open we’re there even at Christmas. We usually get between eight and 15 guys along and while we’re waiting for our coffees there’s just a bit of light conversation, State of Origin is a favourite at the moment. Then we get everyone in the group to tell us something positive that’s happened during the week. We can all easily talk about the negative stuff as it stands out like a sore thumb; most of us are conditioned that way. What I’ve noticed over the past few years is when you put it on someone to think of something positive some really struggle. Many of them have nothing positive that they can see in their life. They can be so bombarded by what happens day to day, so we try to get them to focus on something positive when all they can see is the negative. Then we might continue to talk about someone’s issue or an issue that has been raised. Whether it’s been a marriage that has ended in divorce or one that has survived, it’s how someone has got through it and how do we do this positively so that everyone wins — children, spouse and the man that is involved.

BUILDERS DISCOUNT WAREHOUSE

So that’s why we try to keep everything positive. That’s not always the topic of conversation though. It could be work, someone struggling at work. We’ve even had a young man still at high school and he was being bullied at school. We’ve had people who have been thinking about suicide in fact any life issue at all, maybe coming out of prison. Some people who come out of prison just say they want to go home and they are referring to prison as their home, that’s one of the saddest things you can hear. Someone I know recently got out after 24 years in prison, since he was just 17 years of age. He hasn’t had a life outside of a cage; one can only imagine what that does to someone’s head. We encourage them to talk about it and it’s something that most of us have never experienced. Although people like myself work in prisons and can give some insights to the rest of the group the group itself can encourage them further by asking them over for a barbeque or going to see a movie or catch up for a coffee. The focus is on relationships in all parts of the community, from young men, business people and the church, men of all walks of life. It brings them all together and what we aim to do is to build relationships within the group so that it carries on outside. Last Saturday night about four or five of us from the group got together for homemade pizza at one of the men’s homes. There’s a saying I know that goes, “men become men in the company of other men”. You can’t become a man in a group of women or hanging around with kids, you need other men. In the Bible, Proverbs says that “as iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another”, so turn to a mate, have at least one person that you “do life” with, that you meet regularly, have a coffee with. Don’t do life alone; don’t sit at home alone with your thoughts. Get with people who will encourage you and challenge you. That’s the core of MOTV8, it’s not a motivational group, it is about relationship and mateship. Although the group isn’t a Christian group it is based on Christian values and principles, where everyone is welcome and the golden rule of “treat other as you wish to be treated” is central.

S

o, you have some spare dollars and you think it might be a good idea to buy a holiday house. There are good reasons to think carefully about this, to research the areas you like thoroughly and to seek good financial and legal advice before jumping in. Generally, holiday houses are in a higher price bracket than similar residential properties. Returns may be higher on a weekly basis, but they are sporadic. At Christmas/New Year and Easter you will wish you had 200 properties and then in the ‘off’ times you will wonder if you are ever going to receive another enquiry again. It is definitely not a market to go into if you are looking for a good steady income. That’s not to say that a holiday rental can’t provide good returns, it can, the key to good returns is a lot of research into the best potential areas for holiday makers.

SO, WHAT CAN IMPACT THOSE GOOD RETURNS? • Damages can sometimes run into the thousands. One rental owner had guests who broke a cupboard door off, tore a stair-rail down, broke the fly wire doors, left the house in a filthy condition - damages and cleaning costs far outweighed the rental received and this was all in one weekend, and no they weren’t a young partying group, they were a couple with a family and small business owners themselves who refused to pay the damages. The owners then had to weigh up whether they would take these people to court, or get their insurers to chase them. It’s easier to get the insurers to chase such people, but then the owners’ insurance premiums increase. • Maintenance headaches can happen when the holiday home is in an isolated area making it difficult to get essential services to the house for repairs and maintenance as soon as they’re needed. For instance,

the big storms of the Australia Day weekend created a few problems for house owners on the Moreton Bay islands – TV aerials blown down, roofs damaged, and windows broken. A lot of tradesmen aren’t too keen to travel too far for just one job as it might take all day. • Marketing and rentals you can handle yourself, or you may prefer to place your property in the hands of a rental agency. Some agencies want your property for the majority of the year, and you, like your clients, have to apply to use your own property. If you decide you want to handle your property yourself you will need to market constantly, work out what the coming months are going to bring, and what you need to do to ensure that you have constant rental flow. You need to go into owning a holiday rental with the knowledge that some years you won’t make your costs and will have to subsidise the property from your own pocket.

As a property owner renting your property out, you need to be aware of your legal obligations. Generally these can be accessed through the Department of Fair Trading. Your accountant and your solicitor are also a good resource. If you put your property into the hands of a rentals agent, they will advise you of legal obligations, but it is a good idea to make sure you research them yourself so that you are never caught out by some legality that you hadn’t thought of. There are books on the subject, and good advice from people such as Tourism Queensland, the REIQ, and Department of Fair Trading. Also, the Real Estate agents in the area you might be thinking of buying in are always a valuable resource. _______________________ Article courtesy: tangaloomabeachhouse.com.au 0438 446 136

LOGAN CITY COUNCIL 2013-2014 Budget released

The mark of a progressive and responsible council is that it is attuned to the needs and expectations of its residents and communities, and still able to make important decisions to ensure a sustainable future. In this budget we have again shown we retain these qualities. This budget not only meets the needs and expectations of the community, but does so in a considered, responsive and responsible way. Through hard work and a considered approach, we have been able to hand down a $775 million budget that delivers benefits to all sections of our community. And importantly, we have kept the rate increase to the current level of CPI in Australia - 2.5%. This equates to a $37 a year increase - or 71 cents a week, on the average annual general rates, levies for the majority of Logan City ratepayers. The ability to deliver a CPI budget which provides additional funds for priorities in spite of constant challenges and financial impacts of the GFC, growth, flood, and electricity price increases, is admirable. This year, we have juggled many important priorities identified by this Council and recommended to us by our community, particularly through the Logan Listens: Residents’ Survey. This survey continues to be a valuable tool for us to communicate with residents and gather information on suggested priorities.

PAM PARKER Message from the Mayor of Logan City

Teens and Dating HELP! MY TEENAGE KIDS HAVE STARTED DATING!

I

stare at my teenage son and daughter’s baby pictures, sitting on the piano, remembering their sweetest and most innocent moments with pride. As a mother, I knew the time would come when they would start showing interest in the opposite sex; but I didn’t know it would be something that I would have to practically and emotionally manage as a parent! Should parents keep informed of their teens’ dating adventures? How can parents ensure their children remain safe when it comes to growing up? The bad news is that there are no guarantees that our children will be safe forever. At some point, they will make choices we will disagree with. However, there is good news! As I constantly remind my readers, parents can assist to keep their children safe by maintaining ongoing open communication with them, by leading by example and by simply showing interest. I hope the following suggestions are helpful to you:

1 2

Do not get angry at your child for disclosing they have a boyfriend/girlfriend. As I have recently learnt with my 13 year old son, our reactions dictate their willingness to share information. While I completely understand some information would be negative or distressing to you, remember you can not address what you do not know. Do not give your teenagers reasons to hide things from you.

Provide boundaries. Once your teen has disclosed to you they have a boyfriend/girlfriend you might want to put boundaries and discussions in place around what is acceptable and safe when dating at their age. Every age will be different, however it is important that your child understands what is negotiable and what is not.

4 10

3 Provide healthy dating options such as group activities and day time or public outings. Strict parents who fully ‘forbid’ dating at any age, might find that their teenagers sneak out, engage in physical contact earlier, or are more likely to become resentful and/or disregard boundaries all together. Involve your children in discussions around the pros and cons and the parameters and consequences of dating.

Listen instead of trying to fix! I recently learnt another lesson from my 15 year old daughter. Following a typical teen break up where I felt quite tempted to speak my mind to the young man involved, my daughter calmly reminded me she needed a listening ear, not a tinker! As focused on my daughter’s emotional needs and ‘story’, I was able to reassure and normalise her experience; something that was highly beneficial to her, rather than focus on my needs. JULY 2013

Beenleigh State High School IF YOU CAN REMEMBER A TIME WHEN MARY WIDOW JUNKET TABLETS, SCORE HAIR CREAM AND GOLD CREST FLOUR WERE AVAILABLE AT MANAHAN’S FOOD STORE IN BEENLEIGH CHANCES ARE THAT YOU WILL REMEMBER BEENLEIGH STATE HIGH SCHOOL OPENING WAY BACK IN 1963.

In

1954 a high top was established at the primary school to provide further education for the growing student population. By the late 1950s the need for a high school had increased to a level where a full high school was seen as a requirement for the then country town of Beenleigh. The Member for Logan, Mr E.G. Wood, who deputised for the Premier at the original opening, noted that students in country towns were entitled to an equal opportunity for their education. By the end of 1964, just two years into Beenleigh State High School’s history, 391 students were enrolled. In 2013, Manahan’s Food Store has gone. Gold Crest no longer mills flour. Bodgies no longer use Score Hair Cream, and if today’s child Google’d Mary Widow Junket Tablets, they may find it is some type of spider, not a flavoured dessert.

Whilst the school has modernised in many ways, the provision of education to the local community is still central to its operation.

the anniversary book. There will also be an Anniversary Port available for purchase over the weekend.

Celebrations

Organising committee

To celebrate the 50 th anniversary, an Anniversary Dinner will be held on Friday 18th October, at the Beenleigh PCYC. This will be followed on Saturday with a Roll Call at 8.45am, followed by an Open School, where former students and teachers, parents and friends, are welcome to come and have a look around. Anyone who is interested in attending the anniversary dinner can contact the school, or look up information on the school website. The cost for the anniversary dinner will be $20 for a ticket, and $40 for a ticket and the anniversary pack, which will include a school commemorative glass or cup, and

The Committee organising this event meets on the third Monday of each month in the E-Learning Centre (Library for all you older students) at 5.30pm. All are welcome and feel free to bring along any memorabilia you may have the further enhance the celebrations. In low and no calorie soft drinks, sugar has been replaced by artificial sweeteners. Some of the more common sweeteners include: • Acesulfame K (ACE-K) or E950 • Aspartame or E951 • Sucralose or E955

Intensely sweet, these synthetic substances are metabolised differently to sugar. This means they don’t result in excess calories, however the different metabolism processes raise more serious health concerns of their own. While manufacturers often claim their products contain less artificial sweeteners than researched toxicity levels, the cumulative use of diet products throughout the day means that doses higher than the recommended safety levels may easily be consumed from different products. For example: the WHO has set acceptable dietary intake of ACE-K at 15mg/kg. Based on the Australian Food Standards, a 60kg adult woman consuming 1 diet soft drink, a tub of diet yogurt, some low calorie tinned peaches and a low calorie salad dressing could exceed this acceptable intake in one meal.

OMEN in business MULTI-TASKING SUPERHEROES OR SIMPLY GETTING ON WITH THE JOB! This magazine regularly features local women in business especially successful entrepreneurs who are dedicated, determined and daring, writes Wendy Johnson. What drives women to get into their own business? Some will say it’s to fit in with family responsibilities as to some degree they can choose the hours they work. Others say that they simply couldn’t take another day of working for a boss or the rat race of the city or that they wanted to prove they could do it on their own. Some have traditional careers that are best operated as a small business such as in the beauty, health and wellbeing sector. While the main purpose of any business is to make a profit, many women in business also look for the X factor. This can range from a personal philosophy of caring and compassion found in the helping industries, to social justice concerns or using their creativity. Fortunately the key to being a successful woman in business can be put down to some of their best attributes: great communication skills, budgeting and economic use of resources, empathy, and their well-renowned multitasking abilities. They can also have great vision — they know what they want their business to “look” like and the atmosphere they want to create.

Claudia Roel THE EYEBROW BAR

Claudia’s story of courage, persistence and determination started 10 years ago when she first arrived from Brazil on a trip that was meant to be great adventure.Despite the highest qualifications in different fields, finding a suitable job was more than challenging for an immigrant woman in her 40’s. Taking the future in her hands with minimal capital and a lot of wisdom, Claudia started her own eyebrow and lash studio at the back of a nail salon. After two years and in a new location Claudia knew she was doing things right. Claudia says. “Believe in your goals and be passionate about them but the most important thing is never let anyone tell you what can or can’t do!” Now, bigger and better, THE EYEBROW BAR at Shailer Park has a great reputation and proudly claims to be the most complete eyebrow bar in the country, based on great customer service and an absolute passion in providing the latest for eyebrows and lashes from all over the world.

Julie-anne Faranda Bella Diamonte’s Beauty Therapy Julie-anne Faranda’s salon is a haven for women where they can feel comfortable. There’s nothing minimal or cold here — simply luscious products, tranquil treatment rooms and down to earth treatments that nurture not only the skin but the person too. Whether you need a facial to pep up a tired complexion, waxing, hair removal or need more concentrated therapies such as a non-surgical facelift, Julie-anne will start with an in-depth consultation to fi nd out how you feel about every aspect of your skin. She will then customise her treatments to suit your skin type. Her facials include a massage to face, neck, décolletage and shoulders and you cannot help but surrender to Julie-anne’s fi rm but sensitive touch, just the right amount of pressure to be effective but not intrusive. Julie-anne’s philosophy means that she wants her clients to be able to come to a professional salon in Springwood that has a warmth and friendliness about it.

Beauty therapy is a very intimate business and my mission is to treat you as the precious individual you are.

Exercise and

men’s depression So why is it that we find it so hard to talk about our feelings? Why are so many prominent male Australian sports people outing themselves as suffering from depression and anxiety?

W

e men are a strange species. Tough rugged exterior, able to take hard knocks and physical poundings on the sporting field, but the hint of a cold or a sniffle and we crumble into “Man Flu” hell. What can we average normal blokes do about it? Depression and anxiety are serious health problems, but a simple stint in the garden, run around the block or a workout in the gym may be a way of not only alleviating the symptoms, but also a step towards a way out and getting yourself out of the dark “Man Cave” and into the light.

Many of the physical symptoms of depression include: • tired all the time • sick and run down • headaches and muscle pains • sleep problems • loss or change of appetite • significant weight loss or gain

You feel overwhelmed, guilty, irritable, frustrated, lacking in confidence, unhappy, indecisive, disappointed, miserable and sad. We all know that exercise is good for the body, but there is a growing pile of scientific evidence that suggests it is also good for the brain. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain as well as releases endorphins, which is a natural anti-depressant. My clients often tell me of the positive benefits that they get from exercising. This includes: • Increased energy levels • Improved overall health and wellness • Improved sleep patterns (deeper sleep, more sleep, more often) • Increased appetite • Fat loss • Muscle gain

So you can see how getting a regular hit of the exercise drug (endorphins) is not only a great way to combat the symptoms of depression, but it’s good for you full stop. The problem is, when you’re down in the dumps, exercise is the last thing people want to do. So how do you overcome this? How do you exercise when your head feels like crap and you are grovelling in a hole? Probably the best piece of advice I can give you is this: SEEK HELP NOW. If you can’t talk to family and friends about the way you’re feeling, seek out a professional. Your GP is most definitely your first port of call. Your doctor can refer you on to professional psychological assistance and Medicare usually covers the first few consults. They are also the most appropriate person to discuss your pharmaceutical options. Other allied health professionals like massage therapists can take away some muscle aches and pains and a nice relaxation massage does wonders as well. Even a good personal trainer can get you up off the couch and out of the house for a boxing session in the local park. There are options, if you simply seek them out. And my final say on this topic: You’re not being tough when you keep it bottled up. On the contrary, anyone can hold it in. That’s why so many do. It takes a tougher man to “man up” and reach out for help, even if it’s just a telephone call to Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.

Perfect Posture with Dr Andrew Gorman

When you are talking about good health, posture should be at the top of the list. Posture is just as important as eating right, regular exercise, a good night’s sleep and avoiding harmful substances like alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Good posture enables you to perform activities with more energy and less stress or fatigue. In short, without good posture, you really cannot be physically fit. Surprised? Well, you are not alone! Many health and fitness professionals, as well as those people trying to get fit and healthy, often overlook the importance of good posture in a fitness program. When working out in the gym it is just as important to maintain good posture as it is to perform the exercise correctly in order to avoid injury.

Proper alignment

The good news is that almost everyone can improve their posture and make improvements at any age. Good posture involves the proper alignment of your bones so that your muscles, joints and ligaments can work as nature intended. It also results in your vital organs being in the right position and functioning at peak efficiency. Being slouched in an office chair all day compresses your heart, lungs, stomach and bowels making it difficult for them to work properly. Good posture also contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system. This is why a person with poor posture often feels tired, constipated and unable to work efficiently or move properly.

Maintaining proper posture:

• When seen from the side, imagine a straight line running from your ear to the ground. It should run through your shoulder (i.e. your ear should be over your shoulder) the third lumbar vertebrae, the greater trochanter (i.e. the thigh bone at the hip) just behind the middle of the knee and just in front of the ankle. • Your chin should be up and eyes looking straight ahead. • From the front, a straight line should pass from your nose down through the little notch between the collar bones, through your navel, and to the ground midway between your feet. • If you have rounded shoulders or are prone to slumping (which results in forward head posture) try to lift your head up by inhaling and lifting your chest. This will put your head on top of your shoulders and reduce the stress on the upper trapezius and levator scapulae muscles from forward head posture.

southcitybulletin.com.au

To maintain good posture when standing:

• Hold your head high, chin slightly tucked in, shoulders back, chest out, and stomach tucked in. • Strong abdominals help support the spine. If you stand for long periods at work, rest one foot on a stool or take breaks to get off your feet for a while.

When sitting use a chair with firm low back support: • Keep the desk or table top at elbow height.

• Adjust the chair to keep pressure off the back of the legs, keeping your knees a little lower than your hips. • Get up and stretch frequently--every hour if you sit for long periods of time. Go from bad

To better posture

• Do not sit on your wallet as it can cause a hip imbalance.

Just fifteen minutes reading or typing with the head forward exhausts the muscles of your neck, shoulders and upper back while also reducing the volume of air you can breathe in.

Posture Check

So try this next time you are in front of the computer or sitting at your desk:

For adults and young children

• Try stretching your neck muscles by standing or sitting straight up and dropping your ear to your shoulder. You can even pull it gently to the left with your left hand toward the shoulder (while sitting on the right hand, palm down) making sure to keep your head looking forward (don’t twist your neck).

Do you know these symptoms can be caused by bad posture? -

• Return your head to the neutral position, eyes looking forward, turn 45 degrees to the left and then pull the chin down towards the nipple. Repeat for the other side.

Other stretches for the upper body will help, like arm circles and pulling your arm across the chest. If you lift weights, focus more on upper back exercises than chest exercises.

Recurring headaches, migraines Irritable Bowel, bladder problems Heartburns, reflux, bloating Shortness of breath, inability to breathe deeply. Recurring ankle and knee problems Neck, shoulder and back pains Irritability, moodiness Learning difficulties. Period pain Low energy

Slow Cooking Imagine coming home after a hard day at work to the aroma of a freshly cooked meal, or getting up on a cold winter morning to a big pot of delicious warming porridge. Both of these scenarios are possible with a slow cooker, writes Suzanne Walker.

I

t is possible to cook a wide range of foods in a slow cooker, both soups and casseroles do exceptionally well, but I do know of some adventurous souls who even bake a cake in theirs. Some people I know, even have multiple units, one for entrée, one for main, one for vegetables and one for dessert, but we’ll start with one. You can save time and money by using cheaper cuts of meat and cooking for a long time without the need to constantly tend the pot. Let us start with size — if you don’t already own a slow cooker, a 1.5lt is suitable for 1-2 people, 3lt -4lt for 4 people and 6lt for a larger family or for yummy leftovers!

southcitybulletin.com.au

Shop 16, Holmview Central, 318 - 322 Logan River Road, Holmview. Phone: 07 3801 8666 Email: feedback@crisppizzabar.com.au Web: www.crisppizzabar.com.au

Three simple rules 1. I like to brown the

meat and vegetables for a casserole as it gives a greater depth of flavor. If you are running out of time it will still work without browning. 2. Some people like to toss the meat in flour before browning, but those with a gluten intolerance can skip this step or use a gluten-free flour. 3. Don’t over fill the pot, maximum of 2/3 full, as a lot of liquid is produced, and don’t lift the lid while cooking as temperature is lost.

Chicken and Vegetable Soup • Place 8 drumsticks in

the base a slow cooker, top with a cup each of onion, celery and carrot, add a can of creamed corn and a litre of chicken stock or water. • Feel free to add any other vegetable, like capsicum or leek. • Cook on high for four hours or low for eight hours. Any soup will do well with this type of cooking, Pea and Ham, Minestrone, Mulligatawny, Pumpkin or Goulash just pop all into the slow cooker and walk away.

My favorite is Beef and Mushroom Casserole • Brown 600 grams of diced chuck or oyster blade and place in the slow cooker. • Sauté a cup each of diced onion, carrot and celery in the same pan, deglaze with a cup of red wine, add to pot. • Sauté 400g mushrooms, add to pot with a tablespoon of seeded mustard and 500ml of beef stock. • Cook on high for four hours or low for eight hours. Try any of your favourite recipes — Bolognaise, Green Chicken Curry, Coq au Vin, Chicken Cacciatore, Cassoulet, Slow Roasted Shoulder of Lamb, or even a whole chicken on a trivet of sliced tomato and onion and 3 cm of water and a sprinkle of paprika and you have a roast chicken.

Breakfast for four • Place one cup steel

cut oats, available from health food shops, (do not use the rolled oats from supermarkets or you will have stodge) add 5 cups of water and a pinch of salt. • Stir and cook on low for 8 hours, serve with brown sugar and cream… ahh, just what you need on a cold winter’s morning!

Any type of cuisine can be adapted to the slow cooker it’s all just up to your imagination. Bon Appetit! 19

H

ow many of us have already given up on our New Year Resolutions? They have become just too hard to maintain – life just seems to be getting in the way! Or, how many times have we given up on a project or a dream because things were getting too much, too complicated or just seemed all too hard. Too often we come close but fail because we either don’t identify the “umph” we need to finish or we fail to apply it.

Sometimes the “umph” may be a tangible factor; perhaps it could be money, or resources. However, 90% of the time it can be identified as attitude - a positive versus a negative attitude. We let our negative self talk loose when we hit that barrier or challenge and we talk ourselves out of pushing through to completion. We give up!! It’s all too hard!! It wouldn’t be a success anyway!! It’s already been done!! I can’t do this – I haven’t got the talent – I’m no good – I haven’t got the time. Do these comments sound familiar?

POSITIVE SELF TALK This is where we need to say, Stop! Stop that downward spiral and start thinking positive – switch to positive self-talk. Push that extra mile, look for those resources. Say, “I can do this, I have got talent, yes I am good , yes it will succeed. I made that New Year Resolution for a reason – just a little more push and I will achieve my goal.” Thomas Eddison summed it up in his quote: Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. So if you’re involved in a project that you are thinking about giving up, search for the “umph” you need to go on — • change your attitude • step back look at the project with new eyes • talk to someone, • re-look at your goals • visualise your success • look for a mentor or business coach, • attend personal development seminars, upgrade your skills. Remember Stephen Bradbury the Aussie Skater in the 2002 winter Olympics? He could very easily have given up – he was not expected to win. Yet he kept going giving his best and because he was there and giving his best, he was there when the opportunity came and he won that gold medal. Find the “umph” in you – keep going and celebrate your triumphs. Surprise yourself and let this year be the year that you keep that New Year’s Resolution. ________________________________________ Trish Springsteen is an award winning Communication Expert, Senior Trainer, Professional Speaker, MC and author 20

Read Spell Succeed John Steley, principal of Read Spell Succeed, says that having dyslexia does not have to prevent high achievement “There is a long list of high achievers who have, or had dyslexia,” John says. “However, the reality for most is that dyslexia often prevents people from reaching their full potential. All too often parents watch their children fall further and further behind their peers at school, develop a negative self-image and become behavioural problems at home and school. This can be carried throughout adulthood.” John finds it particularly concerning that about 50% of prisoners and children in reform schools have dyslexia, compared with only about 10% of the general population.

READING AND SPELLING ASSISTANCE John established Read Spell Succeed to help address this need in the community. He uses the IDL (Indirect Dyslexia Learning) training system, new to Queensland, to help people who have difficulty reading and spelling, whether that is due to dyslexia, or some other cause. As a qualified teacher of 35 years, John has taught in two countries at the secondary and tertiary levels, in the public and private school systems and has also taught adults and second language speakers. “I was introduced to IDL by a friend in Perth,” John says, “and I was immediately impressed by the difference it made for her students. I knew I wanted to be a part of it so I travelled to the UK to meet the people behind the program and to be trained in its use. I am committed to helping people create a better future for themselves.”

southcitybulletin.com.au

IDL IN ACTION John says that it is important to understand that dyslexia affects adults as well as children and the IDL System is very successful in helping both. Its success is due to a five step approach to solving the problem:

To learn more about the program and see it in operation, you are invited to attend a Read Spell Succeed Open Day from 2.00-4.00pm on Sunday, July 14. Contact John for further details. READ SPELL SUCCEED john@readspellsucceed.com.au 0417 171 151

1. Self-learning: people with dyslexia learn better when they teach themselves and this is how IDL works. A facilitator is on hand to oversee the process and step in as needed, but otherwise the students teach themselves at their own pace, stress-free.

2. Tailored colours: people with dyslexia see colour

differently. With IDL, they choose four colours that allow them to see the text most clearly.

3. Multi-sensory: IDL brings as many senses into play as

possible. Students see it, hear it, type it, speak it and hear themselves played back. They learn touch typing which brings muscle memory into the equation.

4. Structured and Sequential: IDL lessons ensure an appropriate progression and skills are consolidated before moving on. 5. Repetition: Based on the square rule: if 5 repetitions are usually needed to effect learning, people with dyslexia may need, for example, around 25 repetitions. 80% of lessons are repetition/revision.

The science of numbers

BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF TRIPLE NUMBERS

The old wives-tale of lulling oneself to sleep while counting sheep jumping over a fence has been around for a few centuries. As a lifelong insomniac, I have news for you, “It doesn’t work!” Counting is a mental exercise that can be monotonous and repetitive, but also rhythmic. We don’t always understand the subject matter straight away but learning the times tables at school was so continuous that they became ingrained into our psyches. We sometimes need frequent reminders and recurring arrangements to stimulate the memory. The message would finally sink in that 7 x 5 = 35.

222: Number two exemplifies the feminine intuition and dreams. Pay attention to your hunches, thoughts and visions.

Three-fold numbers are apparent and seem to jump out at us. This is an accessible way for our angels to get our attention. Triple numbers work together in unity to become numerals rather than numbers. Numerals convert to symbols which is a trademark of the angels. Three dots … three dashes - - - three dots … is the universal SOS code. ‘Calling for help to save our souls’ is a term adopted to describe this signal. Ask in threes and the answer will be given threefold.

POWERFULLY FRAGILE A NEW ONE ACT PLAY

Powerfully Fragile was written by Brisbane based, Cancer Survivor, Briohne Sykes. It is the story of four women and how they journey through their respective lives, focusing on One’s recent cancer diagnosis. The women all have a burden to bear in life. The play also showcases the beautiful relationship between a man and his wife, and how strong their love is. At its heart, Powerfully Fragile is about ‘Not letting your Struggle become your Identity’. Both funny and reflective, this One Act Play is a must-see discussion starter. 2 – 4 August 2013 | POWERFULLY FRAGILE PERFORMANCE Beenleigh Theatre Group | 3287 2912
