ON THE SPOT
Building lives, building hope
There’s a popular saying, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and it aptly applies to the work being done at The Spot, writes Wendy Johnson.
O
ften when government support for social welfare programs is defunded the providers must cut the support or even in some cases are forced to close down. Others, like The Spot Community Services at Parkinson, take the challenge head-on and look for innovative ways to boost their income stream. Ken Houliston, Executive Director of The Spot, is well known for his entrepreneurial focus
02
and is the driving force for a number of clever initiatives to keep the organisation’s mission on track. “Our focus is to become self-sustainable financially,” Ken says. “The core of what we do is about wrap-around services for the whole family — the baby, the child, the teenager and the mum and dad — and I guess as we have grown as an organisation that’s where our focus lies. We would like to become as independent as we can.”
Social enterprises
As well as providing programs for children and their families The Spot also operates a number of social enterprises that were developed to create income streams, outside of government funding, to contribute to continuing their community services. These include four social enterprise ventures that operate out of The Spot’s purpose built building. The construction company Spot on Homes builds beautiful homes using an individualised design and build process with profits channelled back into The Spot Community Services. A towering, indoor climbing gym called The Rock is open to all who want to be active and have a ton of fun. With colour-coded foot and hand holds the gym is suitable for climbers of all abilities and is especially suited to team building activities, school sports and birthday parties. Mainstay Media is a fully kitted recording studio focussing on supporting and educating developing artists or anyone with an interest in music. After a break the studio is soon to be back in full swing, encouraging creativity and developing musicians. A popular addition is the Sandstone Café on the ground floor of the building which serves the purpose of providing hospitality experience to trainees and also delicious food for functions held at the centre. With a number of rooms suitable for
meetings, training and functions The Spot is an ideal place for events especially with the catering service on-site.
Support programs
The Spot provides services that are based on early intervention and prevention support, education and job preparation. Coordinator for the Family Unit, Katie Barnes says that Heart Ties™ Enriching Parenthood© is one of the base programs they offer. Enriching Parenthood© is a unique program that builds strong connections between adults and children through principles of empowerment to establish love and respect in the home. Katie says that once clients have completed a base program it may be as simple as them coming in and talking about strategies or as intense as a case worker going into the home to offer onthe-spot parenting coaching. “Whatever they are struggling with and they want help with, that’s what we do.” “We get a lot of parents referred through from schools and by word of mouth as well,” Katie says. ”Our base programs are run day and night depending on the need at the time. We have child minding facilities here and also offer transport if that is part of their case plan.”
September 2013
The Spot will sell a maximum of 255,000 tickets and will promote “referrals” with the separate incentive prize draws with the first being the home theatre package.
Raffle launch hijinks
Win a Home | Build a Community
The team at The Spot are constantly thinking of ways to raise the necessary finance to continue to support and expand the services they provide to the community. The latest venture is a $2.5m Art Union raffle — Win a Home | Build a Community — to start on 3rd September and to be drawn in March 2014. The major prize is a Gold Coast unit at Varsity Lakes, valued at $510,000 and incentive prizes include a home theatre package valued at $6,500 to be drawn after the first 10 days; a Flight Centre voucher valued at $12,000 drawn after 3 months; and a car valued at $22,000 drawn at the same time as the Gold Coast unit. Based on the entrepreneurial spirit of The Spot this is no ordinary art union. Instead the $10 tickets will be promoted through social media and sold online. This will decrease administrative costs while relying on donors to refer or promote the lottery to their social networks under the slogan of #MoreFriendsMoreChances. The referral side of the promotion is the central point of the lottery with the prize structure designed to encourage people to share information about the art union through social media. Everyone who buys a ticket has the opportunity to identify who referred them to the lottery.

To launch the lottery The Spot is planning a week-long celebration from Sunday 8th September involving the whole community. Lots of fun and free activities are planned on the land adjacent to The Spot building, including a touch footy clinic, a community expo and a family fun day. The Spot Lottery Ambassador, former Rugby League great Petero Civoniceva will be the star attraction at several launch events and will challenge other celebrities to “get on board”. The key feature of the week will be the Executive Director, Ken Houliston, camping out on a 14 metre high scissor lift adjacent to Mt Lindsay Highway (next to Makin Mattresses) at Parkinson. Ken will be “roughing it” for the whole week aimed at building community awareness and support for the lottery. Mayors of Logan, Brisbane and Ipswich will be invited to come and join with Petero and Ken for High Tea on the scissor lift. The success of the art union will mean The Spot can continue to develop their range of innovative family programs for the community.

Solomon’s legacy What started as a small act of kindness has grown into a charity that touches many hundreds of lives, writes Wendy Johnson.
I
t was a gorgeous Golden Retriever named Solomon that sealed the fate for Samara and Robert Hill back in 2003. Solomon or Solly as he was affectionately known, drew the couple together and also left his legacy of love for the hundreds of Goldies who now have been rescued through the Logan charity known as GARA — Golden Ark Rescue (Australia) Inc. “I know we all say that our dog is special but Solomon changed all our lives and now he continues to change lives,” Samara says. “We wanted to do something to honour Solomon. I was working at an animal shelter at the time and I was quite surprised when I noticed that Golden Retrievers were coming in.” Samara says that ten years ago there wasn’t a Golden Retriever rescue service in Queensland. “I was one of the many people who wondered why you’d need a Golden Retriever rescue. We rescued our first dog following a marriage break up. It took us a while to re-home him. Next thing we knew we were getting phone calls and by word of mouth. We were shocked at the number coming in.” GARA has grown over the past ten years and is now a registered charity with a committee of seven and a band of enthusiastic volunteers who do everything from conducting potential foster and adopting home inspections to regular fund-raising sausage sizzles.

Research and training a must
These beautiful dogs, so often featured in advertisements with their happy smiling face and golden mane of hair flowing in the breeze don’t always have the happy home and life they deserve. Products of puppy farming, uncaring pet shops and unrealistic owners, too many pets are abandoned when they outgrow the cute stage or not given the training they so desperately need. “It’s not just about getting a pet,” Samara says. “There’s the grooming requirements and the exercise requirements that a large breed needs. Not every person who surrenders a dog is a bad person but they often just go to a pet shop and impulse buy a puppy. People really need to research a breed before they purchase.”
Solomon’s legacy
GARA has now rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed many hundreds of abandoned, abused, lost, neglected, and unwanted Golden Retrievers who found themselves in unfortunate circumstances. “Whether we are called to rescue, receive a surrendered dog, rehabilitate, provide respite care or re-home a Goldie, it involves an intense and expensive process in every situation. Every Goldie undergoes a health and temperament assessment by our veterinarians with additional temperament and behaviour observations,” Samara says. “And each Goldie is desexed, micro-chipped, heartworm tested and treated, vaccinated and wormed.” Without the donations currently being received from concerned and committed supporters, GARA would have to close. But it’s not just about money to support GARA’s services; it’s about love and hope too. GARA is looking for suitable homes for fostering Goldies, as well as adopting and sponsoring. “We have Goldies coming in regularly and from all walks of life. Many of them come in with broken spirits, lost souls and shattered confidence. GARA nurtures these Goldies back to their former glory, mending their hearts, renewing their hope and restoring their happiness.”

Tourism Q booming
ueensland tourism will receive a major boost with 22 regional projects sharing almost $3 million, as part of the Queensland Government’s Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO) Contestable Grants Funding Scheme. Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the grants would be used to leverage local tourism opportunities and support the Government’s goal of doubling annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020. The outlook for Queensland’s tourism industry is bright with passenger numbers soaring through the State’s airports. Ms Stuckey said recent passenger data from Queensland’s airports revealed solid growth over the past financial year which was an encouraging sign for the industry.
“Passenger numbers grew 6.8 per cent through the four Queensland Airports Limited locations – Gold Coast, Townsville, Mount Isa, and Longreach over the 2012/2013 financial year,” Ms Stuckey said. “Gold Coast Airport passenger numbers in particular grew nine per cent over the same period to almost 5.8 million. This is fantastic news for Queensland and shows people still see our state as a top tourist destination.” Ms Stuckey said there was more positive news, with Scoot’s direct SingaporeGold Coast service, launched just over a year ago, delivering an economic boost of $100 million in visitor expenditure for Queensland.“Tourism is one of the four pillars of the State’s economy and the Government’s goal for the industry is to double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020,” she said. “Aviation access will play a key part in achieving this objective and the future sustainability of Queensland’s tourism industry.

This month, Logan City will host the ‘Into Global Celebrations Festival’, the biggest multicultural festival ever to be held in Logan, writes Resa Zekants.
T
he festival aims to acknowledge and promote diversity as an emerging, rich Australian culture in Logan and the rest of the country. It is hosted by Into People Inc. and will be funded by Logan City Council and everyone is invited. Into People Inc. is a not for profit community organisation that seeks to promote cultural diversity, harmony and social inclusion. Logan residents come from a variety of different cultural backgrounds and it is important that we all get along and learn from each other.
L O GA N L A R U T L U C I T L U M L A V I T S FE Good publicity for Logan
One of the organisers of the festival, Jim Ah said Into People Inc. wanted to make this festival one, Logan could be really proud of. “Logan is a small community that needs help. There has been a lot of bad press about Logan recently; we need to change this around. I believe this festival will help good publicity back into Logan and will help bring back businesses,” Jim said. “Logan has a rich multicultural diversity and we need to see this as strength rather than a source of racial conflict and tension. This festival will demonstrate how we can all get along beautifully. We will work together with good community organisation to make this a great family event.” Mr Ah Said the organisation is “expecting 20,000 people,” to attend the festival.
Fun, free festival
The ‘Into Global Celebrations Festival’ will be held on the 14th of September at Gould Adams Park, Kingston and will start at 10am. It’s a free event and you can come in traditional cultural clothing or fancy dress. There will be beautiful exotic foods to try, activities, rides and entertainment for the whole family. It will also feature a multicultural parade, performances from different cultures, medieval knights, martial art display, street performers, roving musicians, international food precinct, children’s show rides and an arts and craft market. It was Mr Ah’s job to organise the stall holders, at first he thought “it’s going to challenging to find good stalls willing to try out
an unknown festival in Kingston.” But, “I have a lot of contacts with many reputable market based businesses, I contacted quite of few them to convince them to help us out. We have stalls and performers from all parts of Queensland coming out to participate in the festival,” he said. Ten football teams from the Sharks will also be competing on the festival day.
This is a Logan first, so don’t miss it. It will be a family fun day and a great multicultural experience, for the whole community. Attend the ‘Into Global Celebrations Festival’ at Gould Adams park this month, you won’t be disappointed.

BACK PAIN ? Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Lower Back Pain • Muscle spasm or strains • Bulging lumbar discs • Numbness or soreness in your legs • Shooting hip or thigh pain
Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced. My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain leave the office pain free. Because I’ve seen it with my own eyes, I strongly believe...Back pain is NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” – Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery
This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, playing with your kids, enjoying your love life, or traveling again.
Want to find out how much this amazing treatment can help your back pain. Phone 3386 0856 and ask for our In-Depth-Back-Pain-Examination. For South City Bulletin readers it’s only $47 when you mention the magazine. What does this examination include? Here’s what you’ll get…
• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen… to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination, • Full set of specialized x-rays (if necessary and clinically indicated the x-rays will be bulk billed by medicare) • A computerized postural assessment and report • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free.
You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your back pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. AT SEASONS
- independence and choice in later life Independence and choice is something that most people take for granted, an accepted part of everyday life, but for older people, that privilege can be taken away from them with one health crisis. Seasons Waterford West Community Manager Barbara Booth is an expert in aged care and says making the decision to move home can be difficult, but for the residents of Seasons, the decision was the best one they ever made. “With a busy social schedule and the company of old and new friends, Seasons residents and their families regularly admit they have never been happier or healthier,” she said.
Accessing care in your own home
Barb has seen firsthand the improvement in the health and well being of people who come to live at Seasons Waterford West. “Deciding to make the move to a new home is often a stressful time of high emotion, a longing for the past and uncertainty
about the future,” Barbara said. “But, the reality for our residents is that once they make the move to Seasons, they never look back. With the support of our talented and professional nursing and personal care staff, residents are able to access low to high care in the privacy of their own home.” But Barb urges people not to wait for a health crisis to occur to prompt the decision to move. “The earlier people choose to make the change, the more control, choice and independence they will have. If they wait for a health crisis, they may find they are forced to settle for something less,” she said.
Choice and independence As a result of recent changes to aged care legislation, nursing home costs and fees will be changing significantly “We have calculated that
it may be less expensive for some people to purchase private care, than to access Government funded nursing home beds,” Barb said. At Seasons, care is provided in the privacy of your own home when you need it and Seasons are experts in accessing government funded community packages to supplement care costs. From a pot of tea with family in your own home overlooking the picturesque Tygum Lagoon to meeting friends for a move in the Gold Class movie lounge, Seasons Waterford West is a beautiful place to live with everything you could ever want and more. _______________________________ Seasons Aged Care – Waterford West www.seasonscare.com.au 1300 506 116

1. Schedule your spring clean in advance Set aside a couple of hours to do this properly without interruptions and to avoid you making excuses or procrastinating. Book it in your diary. 2. Clean the outside of your computer Wipe down the computer and monitor using a soft cloth and recommended cleaner. We’re all guilty of eating at our desk, so remove grime and crumbs from your keyboard and mouse with a cotton bud. Don’t forget the area around, under and behind your equipment where dust gathers. 3. Clean the inside of your computer Sift through emails and delete unneeded files, or file them
in relevant folders. Review documents, photos, and files on your desktop. If you haven’t used or looked at them in a year consider whether you really need them on your desktop. Delete them or re-file. 4. Get organised Start with your filing system. While we each have our own way of organising our desk and our office and business processes like incoming requests, current projects and files etc., in general it is helpful to set up a system that includes the following: • An Inbox for current items you are working on or need to start working on • A filing tray • A current projects file often kept handy in a wire filing rack on the desktop I also have separate suspension files for each client to keep anything I am working on in there.
As you are doing this, create a recycling pile of papers and a shredding pile. Shred any
confidential documents or paperwork that is no longer required. 5. Tidy up the pin board Use this time to take off the layers of paper you have pinned to your pin board such as tickets to events that have passed, old reminders etc. 6. Recycle or donate If in doubt, throw it out! If you haven’t used some old shelving or an office chair sitting in the corner for the last two years, give some serious thought as to whether you will ever use it again, and if the answer is no, sell it or donate it to charity. 7. Pick or buy some flowers What better way to celebrate spring than with a bunch of fresh flowers! Reward yourself for your spring cleaning effort as well as adding some colour to your office. M Message from the
ayor
of Logan City
Pam Parker
Logan: Then, now and in the future In 1978, Logan City Council was established with a population of 60,000, which over the next 30 years grew rapidly to 170,000. In 2008, local government boundary reform saw Logan’s land mass grow from 249km 2 to 957km 2. Logan went from a city with 29 suburbs to 63 suburbs, with the vast majority of Logan’s land mass remaining rural, semi-rural and conservation. Prior to boundary reform, our city was 70 per cent urbanised with only 170,000 residents. Today, however, with our increased land mass, our city is home to 292,000 people and is just 20 per cent urbanised. We are now the sixth largest local government area in Australia by population, with residents representing 215 different cultures. In 2010, the then state government announced that Logan, with its newly extended land mass, would be home to two new satellite cities, Yarrabilba and Greater Flagstone in the south-west region of Logan. These cities are planned to accommodate a further 200,000 residents over the next 20 years, and even with this projected growth, Logan will remain over 60 per cent green space – what an enviable position to be in!
Currently, Logan has 2,138km of local road networks and over 1,100 environmental and recreational parklands. Our city has 72 state and private schools, a TAFE campus, Griffith University campus and Logan Hospital, all situated at Meadowbrook within walking distance to the rail line. Logan is home to over 21,000 businesses providing employment for 72,000 people. Our economic strategy is focused on attracting investment into the city to create a further 50,000 jobs over the next 20 years. Responsibly managing growth, sourcing infrastructure funding, building the city’s global competitiveness, attracting investments, strengthening our existing businesses and creating jobs for the future are all priorities for Logan City Council. While managing this level of growth will present our Council with significant challenges, it also presents great opportunities for our city to grow and prosper as a sustainable city of choice, with quality lifestyle options. Building a great city also means listening to residents, and in Logan we do this every day through representation by 12 Divisional Councillors. Local government is the people’s government, and I would encourage you to contact your local Divisional Councillor with any feedback or ideas you have on how to make our city and your local area a better place.
A reminder for locals that you are invited to meet with me and Cr Phil Pidgeon at our Division 9 Community Chat this month. The Chat for Division 9 residents and businesses will be held at Kensington Fair Bakery, 5-11 Julie Street at Crestmead on Thursday 19 September from 10am until noon. Please come along and share a cuppa with us – I love to hear from our residents and businesses, and these face-to-face chats are a great way to keep in touch.

Beat insomnia! With Dr Andrew Gorman
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT, YET OVERLOOKED, INGREDIENTS FOR YOUR HEALTH IS A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP! IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT AS MANY AS ONE IN THREE ADULTS SUFFER FROM INSOMNIA AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE.
Insomnia is the body’s way of telling you that something is out of balance in your life. The causes for this are numerous and commonly include stress, depression, excessive caffeine, pain (injury, arthritis, back and neck problems) or simply because you are sleeping in a new environment. Apart from tackling some of the causes mentioned above, there are a few things you can do to help get a good night’s sleep.

Go to bed and get up at the same time consistently even if it means being tired in the mornings. The tiredness will pass. If you are still having sleep problems then try getting up half an hour earlier in the morning as this may help you get to sleep better in the evenings. This may sound contradictory, but do not try and make yourself fall asleep. If you can’t fall asleep after 20 or 30 minutes then get up and do something relaxing. Avoid performing all non-sleep related activities in bed! Keep your bed for sleeping in. Don’t go back to bed until you are sleepy and make sure to still get up at the regular time. If you sleep in then you will start to reset your body clock.

Light helps set your body clock. So you should try to sleep in total darkness, or as close to it as possible, and open up all the curtains or switch on the lights when you wake up. A short walk around the bedroom will also help wake you up and set the body clock. Loud alarm clocks are also disturbing and shouldn’t be necessary once you body clock is set. There are ‘sun’ alarm clocks available with a specially built in light which gradually increase the intensity thus mimicking the sun rising.

Exercise during the day and avoid heavy meals and alcohol especially before going to bed. Take coffee only in the mornings and no more than two cups. If you still have trouble sleeping then cut out all coffee and alcohol. Avoid, however, going to bed hungry by having a high protein snack several hours before going to bed as it contains L-tryptophan, a precursor to melatonin and serotonin which both help with regulating sleep. A piece of fruit, at least an hour before going to bed, will help tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier and make for a good night’s sleep. It is best to eat carbohydrates in the morning and at lunch, when you need the energy to tackle the day, and eat your proteins in the evening to help with your sleep and the rebuilding of your body which occurs at night.
Visits on Specialist treatments.
Other things to consider include the temperature of your bedroom (keep it cool), avoid having electromagnetic devices near your bed as they may affect your body and disrupt sleep, and take a hot shower, bath, or sauna late in the evening. Raising and then lowering your body temperature will facilitate falling asleep. _________________________________ Andrew Gorman Chiropractic | 3290 0677

When Mike Lapot’s Aunt saw an ad in the paper about careers in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) and suggested Mike find out more, he wasn’t immediately interested. With his eye on entertainment, a talent for tap and joining a professional dance company, getting his hands dirty by starting a trade was the last thing on Mike’s mind. Despite this, a lifelong interest in aircraft made him think he should at least find out a little more. After 10 month’s hard study Mike has recently secured an apprenticeship with Qantas, which in Mike’s words “has been the stepping stone to the greatest career I could’ve hoped for!” Mike admits he was not sure he would pass the course because his academic record at school left a lot to be desired. However, he realised that his marks were better than he had anticipated. Not only because he was interested in the subjects but also because of the support from the staff at ATAE. “The staff were great! They’d go out of their way to make sure you could achieve your best. Without them I wouldn’t have made it this far” Mike commented. His advice to others thinking about getting into AME is clear; “There will be days that are easy and days that are hard. However, if you work hard and take everything they throw at you, you’re in for a brilliant career! As for me, I’m loving Qantas, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.” To find out more about AME courses with government funding support, contact ATAE at enquiries@atae.com.au or call 07 3198 3600 and register for their next Open Day, or arrange a time for a personal tour of the facility.

As a teenager and high school student, I often find myself drowning in a pool of my own stress with the ever-growing pressure I feel to obtain high grades, writes Keely Reynolds. The connection between dealing with the pressure to achieve high grades and good study skills is palpable. By creating sustainable study habits it becomes easier to deal with the stress associated with assignments and the preparation for exams.
Developing time management skills When studying for exams, my clock is my worst enemy. I feel as though I never have enough time to feel satisfied that I am completely prepared for the upcoming exam. Good study skills create the perfect building-blocks to develop time management skills. This not only saves you precious time, but your work also becomes more thorough as it has not been rushed due to time restraints. When I’m studying for an exam, I often find myself re-teaching myself things I had learnt weeks ago. A more efficient way I have taught myself, is to revise the work I had learnt throughout the weeks leading up to the exam, so that it stays fresh in my mind and I don’t have to waste time re-learning it.
southcitybulletin.com.au
Lessen the stress As my study skills developed, I found myself less anxious before exams. I believe this is because I feel prepared. Usually the students who feel anxious before an exam are the ones who are unprepared due to lack of study. Feeling confident before an exam makes you more confident about the result. Exams will also become less stressful as you learn how to manage your time in order to finish the task required of you in the particular time condition of the exam. I have learnt from these experiences and have made this a part of my regular study routine. I now feel less stressed and anxious before, during and after exams as I’ve learnt to manage my time, studying in a more efficient way. Hence, I don’t feel the pressure I typically feel to obtain high grades because I feel more confident about the result of my exams and assignments.

Queensland leading ICT studies Queensland is leading the nation in encouraging school students to undertake tertiary studies in ICT and pursue careers in the industry. IT Minister Ian Walker said the success is largely thanks to Group X, an innovative collaboration between industry, educational institutions and the State Government. Since 2007, the number of tertiary students enrolled in ICT-related courses in Queensland has increased by 50 per cent. www.ichoosetechnology.com. au provides information about the many pathways students can follow in an ICT career. ________________________________ OP score review An independent review is underway to ensure Queensland’s senior assessment and tertiary entrance processes continue to provide school leavers with fair and comprehensive recognition of their academic achievements. Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said, “This review is an opportunity for us to ensure that the Queensland system reflects the multitude of ways that senior students can demonstrate achievement and the range of options available to students after they leave school.”

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Logan & Redlands will head up a new project to help to coordinate and link Logan’s many community service providers and networks, and improve the effectiveness and sustainability of programs for the disadvantaged across the community. Logan City Moving Forward as One, launched on August 7 at Logan City Council by the Minister for Human Services Jan McLucas, will receive $344,456 in funding under the Australian Government’s Local Solutions Fund. RDA Logan & Redlands CEO Mariae Leckie said Logan’s Local Advisory Group (of which she is a member) was responsible for
putting forward the proposal to the program, which funds initiatives to lift social and economic participation in disadvantaged areas, with a particular emphasis on the very long-term unemployed, jobless families and young parents. Logan City Moving Forward as One will help build a common social and economic agenda in the region - including goals for employment and education - identifying service gaps and opportunities, minimising duplication and encouraging longterm place-based planning. Ms Leckie said the recent Logan City of Choice Summit, and its resulting two year action plan, provided impetus for the project. “The summit recognized a need
to build a new strategic leadership and governance model for Logan – one which can facilitate better coordination of services, maximize the use of government funding and encourage better implementation of policy on the ground. A Local Government Action Leader will be appointed to drive the project forward, with oversight by RDA Logan & Redlands and Logan Local Advisory Group. For more information on the Moving forward as One project, contact RDA Logan & Redlands CEO via email ceo@ rdaloganandredlands.org.au

Spring Lamb Roasts and BBQs
S
Ahh! the warmer weather is upon us and with that comes BBQs and Spring lamb, writes Suzanne Walker. What could be better than the smell of lamb chops on the BBQ on a nice 26 degree day with clear blue skies!
pring is a fantastic time to indulge in some lamb. We are lucky in Australia to have great quality lamb from lush areas such as Tasmania all year round. But there is an abundance of Australian lamb in Spring, between September and November when the quality is good, regardless of their state of origin. Earlier in the year the Meat & Livestock Association launched the new Lamb Roast Campaign, based on the idea that the traditional lamb roast is a family meal that is synonymous with the “nurture gene” and being a mum. It’s the one meal that we all return home for, because the perception is that it is either too hard or too time consuming to cook ourselves, and Mum makes it look so easy. The new Mini Lamb roasts are so easily cooked that literally anyone can cook them.
Barbecued Butterflied Lamb with Greek Salad
Spiced Rubbed Lamb Roast Topside with Asparagus and Fennel
• Marinate a 1.5kg butterflied leg of lamb in the juice and zest of one lemon, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and 2 crushed garlic cloves.
• Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Place 2 x 500g lamb topside roasts with 2 tablespoons of oil and 2 teaspoons of Sumac, mix and place in roasting dish with 6 whole unpeeled garlic cloves.
• Preheat BBQ to hot. Sear lamb for 5 minutes on both sides, then close the lid and cook for 30 minutes on medium. • Meanwhile prepare a Greek Salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, feta and a vinaigrette, and maybe a potato salad.
Review: Suzanne Walker
• Roast for 30 minutes and rest in a warm pace for 20 minutes.
Easy Lamb Roast Tips
• While resting, blanch 2 bunches of asparagus. Squeeze the garlic cloves into a bowl, with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of vinegar, whisk to make a dressing for the asparagus. Thinly slice a fennel bulb, place on 4 plates, top with blanched asparagus, dressing and sliced lamb.
1. Take the roast from the fridge 20 minutes before cooking.
Garlic Roasted Lamb Round with Mustard Mash Potatoes • Pre heat the oven to 200 degrees. Place 2 x 500g lamb round roasts in a bowl with 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 clove of crushed garlic, salt, pepper and mix. In a hot pan sear the lamb for 5 minutes until brown and then pace in oven and roast for 20 minutes for medium, then rest for 20 minutes in a warm place. • Peel then boil 1.5 kg of potatoes for 20 minutes until tender. Drain then add 2/3 cup of milk, 50g butter and 2tsp seeded mustard. Mash until smooth. Serve the Lamb with Mustard Mash and some green vegetables.
P
2. Set your cooking timer according to www.easylambroast. com.au 3. Rest the meat after roasting and before carving. 4. Carve the roast across the grain for maximum tenderness.
Bon Appetit!

Madres Masala has an emphasis on Southern Indian food, especially seafood curries in the Kerala style but there are favourites from all over India such as Butter Chicken and the Lamb Rogan Josh. Viknesh Pillai is the owner operator of the small Pan Indian Restaurant tucked behind the HQ Hotel at Underwood. He came to Australia via Fiji from Singapore, where he grew up being taught how to cook by his father, and you can certainly taste the love in his food. Madras Masala places the emphasis on freshly prepared and cooked food and Viknesh takes great pride and care with the preparation of all of his curries.
The Menu
The seafood curries are made daily and include fresh fish, prawn and calamari, and for special occasions, pre-order the mud crab the day before. We went on a Wednesday night and had the Malabar Fish Curry. The fish of the day was mackerel steaks cooked in coconut and tamarind with turmeric and coriander, and was easily the

The Business Achievers Awards was a major event on the calendar and we want to have that position again. I am very keen to recognise businesses, community members and sports people that have achieved success in their field so please send in your name and a short story and we will run it in this column. I want to promote positive stories from Logan in this year of the Positive. The Logan Tourism Association is up and running and I would encourage any business that has anything to do with tourism to get on board. Have a look at the website and sign up and become a member.

Thali Plate
An item that intrigued me was the Thali Plate which is available at lunch only. The Tahli plate is a complete meal. The main curry, either vegetable, chicken, lamb or seafood is served with Sambar (Dal and Vegetable curry), lightly spiced vegetables, Rasam (Tomato Pepper Soup), riata, rice, pickle and roti. Very reasonably priced between $10 and $15, and I would like one now! Madras Masala is a small family run restaurant, with an emphasis on freshly sourced and cooked ingredients. All curries are gluten and MSG free and all meat is halal. The service is friendly and the food is very good.
best fish curry I have had in twenty years. The Butter Chicken has a depth of flavour not normally found anywhere, and both curries were served with fragrant steamed rice. We saw other diners having mixed entrĂŠes of Samosa and chicken wings fried with soy, with chilli and lemon, and I regret now, several days later not having some. Other curry styles are Vindaloo, Masala, Chettinad, Korma and Palak, with a choice of chicken, lamb or goat. There is also a wide range of vegetarian dishes from Aloo Mutter to Tofu Sambal.
Good Indian Restaurants are hard to find, and Madras Masala is no exception. Tucked in behind the HQ Hotel on Kingston Road at Underwood, Madras Masala’s food is well worth the trip. Madras Masala is at Shop C 21 Kingston Rd Underwood, 0469 082 277, and is open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch, dinner and takeaway. Bon Appetit!

Your name in numbers Why do people change their name?
It seemed strange at Uncle Don’s funeral when the minister said his name as Arthur. When and how Don came about is a mystery, but I could never imagine him as an Arthur, which was his given name. Nick names, name changes and pseudonyms have been around as long as names themselves. Why? Because given names don’t always resonate with their owners. Every sound we utter is a vibration of the particular letters that make up a name. A name then becomes a living energy. As our life is ongoing and ever-changing, our make-up may also need to be adjusted to suit.
How do you spell your name?
The first letter of the forename carries the strongest weight, but a simple modification of spelling within a name can have an impact. Allan and Allen are a good comparison. Diction is almost identical, yet there is a subtle influence that can alter a person’s feelings. The consonants are exact, but it is the difference through the ‘a’ and ‘e’ that will be the emotional game-player. The ‘e’ carries a message of freedom, adventure and passion. The ‘a’ delivers more of a bang with assertiveness. Both Allan and Allen will have the leadership qualities of the ‘A’ and go far, but Allen might have a little more fun than Allan. Another example is Linda and Lynda. You will notice that the pronunciation remains the same. This is because the ‘y’ takes on the vowel sound of ‘i’. Complete calculations for Linda add to 22 and 20 for Lynda. Lynda is a softer touch then Linda. Stephen and Steven are completely different. Stephen has a spiritual tone and Steven a grounding macho influence. Do you know a Stephen and a Steven to compare their personalities?
Vocalisation of a name
A vowel is the sound produced by breath – the core of expression. Utter the names Beatrice and Beatrix and notice the variation. It is unusual to have an ‘x’ in a name and in this case, the ‘x’, which replaces the ‘c e’, totally transforms it. Try playing with familiar names of friends and family.

A name change can be a clean sweep
My name Dawn resembles a new day dawning or a fresh beginning. No matter what happens today, when I wake up tomorrow, I have permission to start over. I was born at sunrise, hence the name, but my parents tagged it on after Lynette-Marie. Some years ago, a legal name change deleted the Lynette-Marie and brought Dawn out of hiding. A new signature has taken me into an advanced and exciting phase of life and it can for you too. Whether your name is Rowena or Garfield; doesn’t matter – we all have permission to say, “This very moment in time is a personal beginning”. Numerology is a universal gift presented as a puzzle. Each piece of information we acquire helps us to flourish and prosper along our pilgrimage. Enjoy the journey and remember to love your life! Dawn Alice is a Professional Tarot Reader, Numerologist and Author of Life Love Tarot and soon to be released Life Love Numbers. www.dawnalicebooks.com www.facebook.com/dawnaliceloveyourlife

From humble beginnings the show has grown to boast in excess of 400 car entries and over 5000 people through the gates.
