RED CROSS Donating blood is one of the greatest gifts someone could possibly give and the Red Cross’s hunt for gold begins as more Plasma donations are needed, writes Samantha Lee.

T

he ability to save up to three people’s lives with one donation is a phenomenal thing however, donations for blood and other blood products are in high demand. Two major blood components, Plasma and Platelets, which are found within the blood, are currently highly sought after at the Red Cross.

Kane’s Story

At not even a year old Kane was rushed to hospital showing signs of severe jaundice and lethargic behaviour. His mother, Melissa Owen, later found out he was severely close to heart failure. Kane needed two urgent blood transfusions and two intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) infusion solutions but they struggled to find a match for his blood, as his body would immediately reject it. He was left waiting until early hours of the next morning when they finally found a close match and went ahead with the transfusions.

Hunt for Gold! Kane suffers from Evans Syndrome, an extremely rare autoimmune disorder where his body destroys his own red blood cells and platelets. There is no cure. The only hope for Kane is treatment with long term use of steroids, immune suppressing drugs, blood transfusions and IVIg infusions. With the assistance of donations to the Red Cross, a match for Kane’s blood type was found and with their help his life has been saved more than once. Kane’s story shows us that one person can make a difference and that one person’s blood can be vastly different to another’s and possibly help someone in need.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? One in three Australian’s will need blood or blood products in their lifetime while only one in 30 donate each year (3%). The Red Cross tells us that Australia needs more than 27,000 donations every week to keep up with the demand.

Mr Thomas says donors can donate more frequently with Plasma, around every two weeks which is a lot more frequently than general blood donations. “Plasma donations separates oxygen carrying red cells from the plasma and returns those cells to you during the process, along with saline to help boost your blood volume, which is why you can donate more frequently,” he says. “Plasma is the gold coloured liquid part of the blood and is used to make as many as 18 lifesaving products to treat many conditions ranging from autoimmune disorders to burns.”

Gold Rush

The Red Cross will kick start a new drive to get donors in for not only blood donations but donations for these other two critical components. Wes Thomas, from Springwood Red Cross, says they will be targeting new and already existing donors to try a different form of donation. “The Springwood donor centre is having a Gold Rush this month to invite regular donors to try giving Plasma,” he says.

On their training wheels A pathway from school to work

When motivated teens access the right training programs that link them with enthusiastic employers, their future is looking good, writes Wendy Johnson.

School-based apprenticeships Year 11 student Benjamin Steensen is six months into his school-based cabinet making apprenticeship with Altered Image Cabinets at Meadowbrook, a business that makes kitchens and bathrooms. Benjamin says that he chose his apprenticeship because he wanted to get involved in construction and that it was somewhere he could start his career. “It makes me want to achieve more,” Benjamin says, “and I’d definitely advise other students to seek school-based apprenticeships as it really gives you a kick-start for life.” Benjamin says he’s being trained to use hand tools and the drills. “There’s a lot of workplace health and safety and there’s a lot of theory behind it too,” he says. “I’ll be working there one day a week all next year too and then have another three years of my apprenticeship. I’ll be a fully qualified cabinet maker when I’m 20 years of age with a nationally recognised qualification.” Six months ago Jared Northcott chose an

engineering school-based apprenticeship with Abrasion Resistant Materials at Meadowbrook, as he says it’s interesting work and he really likes welding and graphics. “We design mining truck parts and make them,” he says. At a career day at school Jared’s employer had given him a business card and said to call him. Jared went there for work experience and then gained the apprenticeship. “I’m doing a Cert II in engineering here at school and a Cert III with my apprenticeship,” Jared says. “It’s a big workload. I go to work every Wednesday and in the holidays I go full time and sometimes my boss calls me in to work on Saturdays. They are long hours but it’s good and I get paid for it. My boss is very encouraging and helps me a lot.”

School-based traineeships Marcus Delaforce is now more than three months into his hospitality schoolbased traineeship at Zarraffa’s at the Hyperdome. He says that he likes learning how to make great coffees and how to serve food and help the customers. Marcus says he’s a barista in training and plans to make hospitality his career. The year 11 student at Mabel Park says his parents are very excited for him to have the opportunity to gain the school-based traineeship and gain valuable work experience while still at school. Marcus’s employers, sisters Sue Price and Michelle Price, have held the

A team of teachers and industry liaison officers along with apprenticeships centre MEGT, employers and parents are currently working with 40 young people at Mabel Park State High School to assist the students access school-based traineeships and apprenticeships in hospitality, business, childcare, hairdressing, information technology and engineering. These students combine their studies at school with one day a week in their chosen field. They are learning about their trade and also about how to be a part of the workforce, to interact with adults, develop their communication skills, handle money, be part of a team while at the same time building their confidence.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects everything in your life. It’s difficult to sleep and painful to work. You’re unable to enjoy life to its fullest. Do You Have Any Of These Symptoms? • Pins and needles in the hands • Pain in the wrists • Numbness or pain in the arms • Difficulty grabbing objects • Elbow pain If you suffer from any of the above, you may have a painful progressive condition called carpal tunnel syndrome.

franchise at Zarraffa’s Hyperdome for the past six years. Sue says that it’s fun, as they get to work with people and make the best coffee. “Marcus is our tenth trainee so we’re well experienced. Traineeships gives the kids self-esteem and teaches them how to problem solve,” Sue says. “When Marcus achieves something he is so proud and will come and tell us about it. It’s great to see them grow and it’s great for the business as they are young and energetic and they want to learn. It takes the pressure off the academic side of their studies and they get points toward their school certificate and it gives them skills.” Sue says that her business gets an incentive

through the government which she believes will be changing but that won’t stop her offering traineeships. “Marcus came to us through MEGT. They keep an eye out for the kids to help them get further into hospitality. Here at Zarraffa’s we teach the kids how to make the individually perfect cup of coffee. The kids work their way up, in three months they will have their Barista certificate and then there’s the Advanced Barista qualification.” Sue and Michelle encourage all their “kids” to further study. “We offer traineeships and management courses because education gives them so much more confidence and it shows up behind the counter.”

The apprenticeships centre The person who has connected these keen students and enthusiastic employers is MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre (AAC) Business Relationships Consultant, Kurtis Pirotta. An enthusiastic advocate for school based traineeships and apprenticeships, Kurtis says that MEGT is contracted to the Australian government to promote and administer the Australian Apprenticeships Support Services Programme.

Traineeships generally take between one to two years to complete. While apprenticeships usually last between three and four years and cover trade areas such as building and construction, horticulture, cooking, the automotive industry, engineering, manufacturing and many more. “The hospitality industry has great pathways for students to learn skills, handle cash, learn to use coffee machines, and deal with the public,” Kurtis says. “The skills they learn on the job are the things they get to take away with them such as being accountable for time, reading a roster, workplace safety — it’s all practical.” Kurtis says that school-based traineeships have a very high uptake in the Logan area. It’s all based on state government support and the Queensland government supports traineeships immensely, they fund 75% of the training course. In South East Queensland MEGT has five school consultants and they look after up to 15 schools each from the Gold Coast to Logan and the Redlands. “There are many pathways for young people in Logan,” Kurtis says. “I like to think that the parents play a massive part. A recent survey pointed to that 100% of parents wanted to provide career advice for their children in years 10, 11 and 12, but only 20% of them were confident enough to do so. There is a great opportunity for organisations to help parents with those skills. Parents need to play a big part but whether they are confident enough is a different story. We get parents involved and they need to be involved for their children to succeed.”

As the primary gateway for the state’s business community and a key enabler and catalyst for economic prosperity for the whole state, this investment is essential,” Mr Grant said. The new runway will be 3.3km long, 60m wide, located 2km west of, and parallel to, the existing main runway. FITNESS

Family play time - picnic and exercise As the weather warms up moving toward summer, the opportunity arises for the whole family to get out and about and enjoy the local parks and picnic areas, writes Pat Rae.

R

ecently the Rae family discovered Shailer Pioneer Park on Shailer Road in Shailer Park. It has a skateboard park, basketball court, two public tennis courts, a children’s playground and a massive flat area of grass for all sorts of outdoor activities. There’s some circuit exercise equipment for those new to the whole resistance training to “have a go”. There’s even a couple of free gas barbeques on offer for those wishing to cook the odd “snag” or two. Oh and the toilets are in pretty good condition too.

Fun for everyone We’ve been heading down to this park on an almost daily ritual. We have even taken our dog and made the outing a truly family occasion, and there’s so much to do there. • I saw a Mum and son flying a kite and father and daughter kicking a soccer ball into a small goal.

We truly are blessed in the Logan Council area to have easy access to such fantastic outdoor areas like Shailer Pioneer Park. It’s just a matter of getting yourself organised and get out and use them. A few simple tips to making your outdoor picnic a fun family exercise outing: 1. Cover up: Make sure you cover up, wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun is fun, but too much is not good.

• The tennis courts always have people having a hit. • Our kids love to ride their skateboards and scooters and then finish off with a play in the playground.

2. Take water: Even though there are water fountains, having a water bottle at arm’s reach means you’ll be more inclined to sip it and stay hydrated.

• My wife and I even had a small game of 1:1 basketball, till the kids joined us and turned it into a “Boys vs Girls”. My point is this. Exercise doesn’t have to be regimented to get done. Simply scheduling in some regular family play time can do wonders to your workday stress levels, as well as get you out from behind the computer. Pack some cold water (there’s even water fountains) maybe a picnic and hey presto, a simply family outing that incorporates, outdoor fun, play, family time and exercise, all rolled into one.

3. Play: Those seats they’ve installed around the playground. They should really be used for storing your water bottles. Get off them and play with your kids. They will love you for it and so will your body. 4. Bin it: Clean up after you’ve finished. Put your rubbish in the bins and leave the place clean and tidy for the next family. 5. Most of all — have fun!

BUSINESS SHOWCASE

Progress Migration While there may be a lot of negative association surrounding migration in the Australian media and the community, when speaking with Heather Ford it’s easier to understand the other side of the story, writes Samantha Lee.

A

local family run business in Springwood, Progress Migration has been established to assist people applying for visas to not only relocate for business or educational purposes but to reunite families and help people who are in desperate need. Notably, one of the best areas to be located for the business, Heather says Logan is not only rich in culture but she can reach a very large number of people at the three surrounding universities and also the community centres.

Reuniting families

“We try to really get involved in the Logan Multicultural festival as well. We aim to speak to the international community attending and reach a large number of people who want to reunite their families or maybe stay in Australia after studying, and in some cases people who are fleeing for their lives,” she says. Heather admits it can be a very emotionally draining job at times and while some of the stories and people she meets can bring her to tears, it’s the outcome of making someone’s dreams come true or a life change forever that makes it all worthwhile.

“We get people from all over the world coming into our office, from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Africa and India are some of the more prominent ones at the moment as well as Asia,” she says. Half her clients are seeking refuge in a place that’s safe and where they can live peacefully while the other half are people who see Australia as a successful country for business growth and educational benefits.

Building community

“There is a lot of negative association surrounding people who come to Australia, but what they really do is build a strong multicultural society and they pay taxes so we can build better communities,” she says. Progress Migration strictly chooses the cases they take on and only choose people who are genuine and sincere. “One case that represents the type of work that we do, is of a man who moved to Australia to start a new life and had a family,” Heather says. “His mother had never met her grandchildren or had seen her son in a very long time. They applied for a tourist visa and were rejected three times based on the theory that she would not return when her visa ended. The son came

into Progress Migration and requested my help so I began months of work into obtaining documentation from her church, doctor and parliament all in the effort to get her visa approved. The son had to pay an $8000 bond to the department of immigration so there was some kind of insurance she would go back to her home country. In the end it took approximately one and a half years but she was finally approved a three month tourist visa and can see her grandchildren for their birthdays and for Christmas.” Progress Migration is actively working to not only make Logan a better place with a more diverse rich culture but the Australian community as well.

SMALL BUSINESS

Managing Difficult Customers As I was indulging in some sales browsing and yes I admit it some buying, I was amusing myself with one of my favourite occupations people watching whilst standing in line, writes Trish Springsteen.

T

here were long lines at the checkouts and at the returns/exchange counters. Tempers were fraying – people were demanding attention and in some cases courtesy was a forgotten word. It was about this time I thought to myself – I am so happy that I am not on customer service! The response to this multitude of demands and personalities by the sales staff varied from patient competency to harried panic. Difficult customers can be hard to manage at the best of times but during sales with the numbers of customers increased and the patience and time constraints diminishing – it can be very easy to have a small easily handled issue escalate to full on customer complaint. ________________________________________ Trish Springsteen is an award winning communication expert, and co-founder and director of communication training company, Trischel | www.trischel.com.au

Survival Tips for Customer Service • The most important point to remember at all times is: don’t take it personally. Listen for the facts not the emotion. Be objective and be aware that, in the main the customer is annoyed at the situation, not with you personally. Unless you have erred in which case acknowledge the error fix it and move on. If you can be objective and not let your emotions become engaged then you will find it easier to deal with an emotional customer. • You are only able to control your attitude, actions and your choices – you can not control the customers’ actions, choices or behaviour. Work on your actions and behaviour and you will find this will have positive influence on the customers’ behaviour. After all if you refuse to argue with the customer – and are patient, calm and objective it will take the wind out of their sails and they will start to respond logically and less emotionally. With the emotion gone you can get to the core of the problem and deal with it.

• Watch your body language – if you exhibit aggressive body language then the customer will respond to this rather than your words. Be receptive and relaxed using open wide gestures. Watch your facial expression – keep a smile on your face. Sneering, tutting, raising eyebrows, shrugging shoulders, looking away or looking bored is not conducive to fostering good relations with the customer. Next time you’re faced with a difficult customer remember some of these tips and look for the win-win solution. Move from harried panic to patient competency.

On the 26th of January this year, Logan City Council hosted the annual Australia Day Awards ceremony where we honoured a number of our city’s best residents. These announcements would traditionally be followed by much acclaim and fanfare, however that same weekend was overshadowed by torrential rain and storms that led to devastating floods throughout parts of Logan. Next year, however, I am hopeful that our Australia Day Awards ceremony and long weekend will stand alone as a time of joy and celebration for our city. I am pleased to announce that our 2014 Australia Day Award nominations are now open, and I am asking our community to let us know about amazing people within Logan who would be deserving of such awards. For next year’s ceremony, we will be accepting nominations for two awards: Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. Each year I also present a special award – the Mayor’s Spirit of Logan. Our 2013 award recipients have all contributed in a special way to making Logan a better place. Our Citizen of the Year, Paul Casbolt, has been dedicated to fighting for a cleaner, safer Logan through his work heading up the anti-powerline group VETO. Our Young Citizen of the Year, Joshua Lang, continues to bring joy to children in hospital through his generous donations of

• Use good communication skills – start with the basis of all communication = Listen. Listen to what the customer is saying beneath the emotion. Clarify any issues you are not sure of. In many cases just listening and acknowledging the issues will defuse difficult customers. Validating a customer’s issues will often be enough. • If you are able to identify the issue and can fix it – do so. If it will require more investigation clearly outline to the customer what needs to be done, do it and get back to the customer.

While the Mayor’s Spirit of Logan award winner, Robin Gallen, makes a positive daily difference in the lives of so many through her selfless volunteering and community work. So, have a think about the people in your local community – who makes outstanding contributions to our city? Is there an inspirational role model making a positive difference in the lives of our residents? Who do you know who consistently acts with kindness and generosity for the betterment of our community? Logan City Council has been holding the awards since 1988 to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations in our community. But in order to recognise the best, we need you to tell us about our best. Nominations for the 2014 Awards close on Monday 16 December 2013 and you can visit the Logan City Council website at www. logan.qld.gov.au to download and complete a nomination form. As 2013 draws to a close, we are also holding our second-last “Cuppa with the Mayor” event for the year. On Friday 22 November, I will be with Division 11 Councillor, Trevina Schwarz at Gloria Jeans on the corner of Pub Lane and Teviot Street, Greenbank. Come along between 10am and 12pm for a cuppa and a chat – it would be great to see you there.

Helping the community

Jacqueline admits she knows what it’s like to be in a difficult place in life and if she can help someone out who needs it then she won’t hesitate to take action. “I’ve been through tough times and I’ve experienced how hard it can be to get yourself back on top but we have to get up and keep moving forward and if I can help others along the way I will,” she says. Jacqueline says it’s been a particularly hard year for everyone but there is a real need for help in the homeless community of Logan. “I try to get out there in my community and I speak with the people who

hether you arrive in a helicopter, a horse drawn carriage, or an oversized Hummer, it’s important you arrive in style on your big day.It has widely become known to those getting married that it falls in the hands of the groom to decide on the wedding vehicles, but before he’s left to his own devices make sure you consider your options. If he’s already picturing you straddling the back of a Harley while you elegantly wave to the crowd in your vintage one of a kind gown and helmet hair just won’t do, then maybe it’s time to pull his reins in and discuss proper forms of transport that won’t leave you completely dismantled. Limousine offer you the luxury package and classic feel for a wedding. They are also a sure way to guarantee that your whole wedding party will fit comfortably. Another perk is the flowing drinks and food that a lot of companies offer for the trip. Vintage or classic cars are massively on trend at the moment and no matter what type of wedding has been planned they will really compliment the occasion. The only downside is the amount of room but by simply hiring extra cars everyone will arrive in style. There is no more romantic way to arrive than stepping from a gorgeous 1930’s Beauford Tourer and it will be

sure to make you feel like you’re literally living your fairytale day. One classic option that has seen many brides arrive to their day is the horse drawn carriage. Many companies will offer the full fairytale experience by colour coordinating and decorating in your chosen flowers and of course champagne for the ride. Most carriages will seat up to six people to ensure the bridal party can all fit comfortably. Another option that is offered by many companies is for the bride to ride a horse to the venue.

If a more traditional arrival and departure is not your style then there are plenty of options for your day. Stretch Hummers and helicopters, motorbikes and Minis are just a few of the many options available to you. Maybe you’re up for an even more memorable entrance with hot air balloon transportation or a bicycle made for two. For those that are on a budget the transportation could be using a friend or family member’s car for the day or even as simple as

walking to your venue. Nothing would calm the nerves more than a relaxing walk to clear the senses. No matter the form of transport that will be used it’s important to check through a few things with the companies first. Insurance, licenses, vehicle inspection, costs and availability as well as making sure that they will be there to get you to and from the wedding and aren’t going to rush you.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Sabotaging our kids lifestyles W

orking with overweight and obese children is a very complex task that I enjoy endlessly, writes Jessica Lee. I never tire of trying to empower parents to make the right changes to improve the health of their children, and what we feel may be small changes are very big changes to parents.

• Don’t you think you are going over board?

These are just some of the things that parents who try to improve the nutritional content of their kids diet get told. This causes them a great deal of pain because usually it is a Doctor, Paediatrician, School Nurse or other health specialist that has told them their child is overweight. A parent who takes the first steps to improve the diet of their child by introducing healthier food choices is very brave. That first step is so hard that when they come across all the knockers down the road they find it very hard to keep on track.

• You have lost the plot and gone hippy!

Sabotaging a child

• A little bit won’t hurt!

• It’s Christmas, Easter, a birthday!

• They don’t look fat to me! • I don’t know why you’re worried it’s just puppy fat! • The kid will grow out of it! • Oh he’s/she’s just a big girl or boy! • What are you trying to starve your kid now!

Along my travels with the children, I have come across people that like to sabotage the work the family is doing. These can be other parents, grand parents, friends, siblings, teachers, the child’s friends’ parents, sports coaches and the list goes on.

Changing habits

Have you ever noticed that when you embark on a change of eating habits to improve your own or your child’s health all of a sudden everyone has something to say?

• What’s with all the healthy food all of a sudden? • They just took after their father, mother, aunt, or grandparent!

I have had a parent hide soft drink, lollies, chips, biscuits and cakes in the garage for a child. The other parent was shocked when they found out because they could not explain to me why the child’s weight continued to balloon. Why would a parent do this to their child? Then there is the grandparents who know the child is overweight, the parent is working hard to get him back on track and they show up with 30 Easter eggs or a stocking

________________________________________

full of chocolate at Christmas? This is just madness! Whether the sabotage is done with intent or not the end result is the same — parents who are confused, upset, frustrated and feeling very alone in their struggle to encourage their child to have a healthier life style. When you come across a family with overweight and obese children always do your best to support the actions and strategies the parents have employed. Listen to the house rules and carry them into your home as well when the children visit. This helps children learn that the changes are a normal part of life and that the rules are everywhere. They get to see that mummy and daddy are not mean and starving them. Please remember that the parents have made the changes to improve the health of their children. Offer all the support you can.

1. Hydrotherapy: The first things to try are brief

cold baths or showers. Towel compresses on the affected areas for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day, can help to keep the sunburn cool and hydrated. Unfortunately relief is usually only temporary.

2. Topical Vinegar: Plain white vinegar is

a popular sunburn remedy. The evidence behind this folk remedy is anecdotal but many people swear by it. Vinegar can be applied as a compress by soaking clean towels in a half water/half vinegar solution. Loosely wring the towels and apply on the affected areas, avoiding contact with broken skin and the eye area. A better option is to fill a clean spray bottle with the solution and “spritz” it onto skin. Never towel dry as this will increase the irritation – just “drip dry”.

3. Aloe Vera Gel: The Aloe plant is native to

Africa. The long green leaves contain aloe gel which is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects and is commonly used topically to soothe burned skin and to help heal wounds. It is best to use a real aloe plant--cut off a leaf, split it open, and rub the clear gel from the inside of the leaf on the sunburn. Avoid the sticky yellow latex. Do not use on severe burns or wounds.

4. Black Tea: Brew enough tea bags to cover

a considerable area of the sunburn. Ice them down to get the tea really cold. Place the cold, wet tea bags and/or a cloth drenched in the tea over the affected area for approximately one hour about three times a day. Make sure to keep the bags and cloths cold. If you can submerge the burned part of the body into the tea then do so. Keep applying until the sunburn subsides. Some people claim that this works for second and third degree burns as well as prohibiting scar formation. The theory is that the tea works as an antioxidant (to promote healing and reduce scarring) and pulls the heat out of your body (thus stopping or reducing the pain)

burn, it is important to drink plenty of fluids. Burns cause a loss of fluids from the body and sunburn is no exception especially because we got burnt when we were out in the heat and the sun! Remember, dehydration can also cause headaches and fatigue. The best way to rehydrate is to drink plenty of water and add electrolytes which are readily available in any pharmacy. _________________________

Young Woodridge student wins The Queensland Plan award

A

t just seven years of age, Pakileata Vakavelo, a year 1 student at Woodridge North State School, has a splendid vision for Queensland for the next 30 years. The winners of The Queensland Plan primary schools postcard competition were recently announced at the Brisbane Summit by Premier Campbell Newman and Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek. Pakileata was one of eight students in years 1-7 and Special Schools to win the prize in their age group and he also won the overall competition. Primary school students were invited to participate in The Queensland Plan by drawing and writing their personal vision of Queensland on specially designed postcards. Students shared their thoughts on a wide range of topics including saving the Great Barrier Reef, town planning featuring more parks and recreational areas and wishing for a safer and communityfocused Queensland.

Paki, as his friends and mother Maria call him, is a keen rugby player and fan and is super keen on bright orange sports cars. His prize is an Apple iPad mini which his mother says he’s already using to program their television. Paki’s postcard depicts his vision for Queensland in 2043 and features houses, a football field, cars and a bright red Big Rooster store — all important items for this bright seven year old.

Christmas Foodbank Drive Are there really hungry people in Australia? Yes there are, but hunger is largely a hidden social problem and many people suffer in silence. Each year two million people rely on food relief – around half of them are children. That’s one in every ten Australians in need. Seasons Aged Care communities across South East Queensland have stepped up to the mark to support Foodbank Queensland with the Seasons Foodbank Food Drive 2013. They are requesting donations of cans of food such as baked beans, spaghetti, fish and fruit as canned items are affordable and have a long shelf life.

Each Seasons community will act as a Drop/Donation point with the overall goal of 5000 cans and monetary donations are also very welcome. The drive will run for six weeks from 1st November to 13th December. The main goal for Seasons Foodbank Food Drive 2013 is to educate local communities about the problem of hunger and that ever yone who donates items is given the oppor tunity to learn how their donation will be used. Ask for a factsheet when you drop off your canned food donations at Seasons at Water ford West.

Action day against bullying in schools

Science students, teachers and support staff will take part in a special award presentation ceremony on 6th November at the Customs House in Brisbane – rewarding the winners of this year’s Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in Science and Science Education. Younger students, from Prep to Year 7 who took part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge will also celebrate in November when they’re presented with their certificates.

The 2013 Next Step Report shows Queensland students continue to make successful transitions from school into further study and work. More than 39 per cent of Queensland Year 12 graduates from 2012 were studying towards a degree. Also, of the 2012 Year 12 graduates who were studying, more than 77 per cent were studying full-time. The Next Step survey is the most comprehensive study of its kind in Australia. More than 39,400 Year 12 graduates from 2012 completed the survey.

Queensland schools have been called to register for the 4th annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence to be held next March.

FAMILIES

Nurture resilience in our kids Never before have kids experienced so much stress, anxiety and depression! In our ever-changing over-scheduled world, children are feeling over-whelmed, suffering from stomach aches, headaches and behavioural problems, writes Karen Tyrrell. Alarming statistics of children needing help

Top #10 Ways to Nurture Resilience in our Kids 1. Read uplifting books about mental health to your kids, spring-boarding discussions on anxiety = worry and depression = sad days. Children need inspiring stories to nurture positive self-talk and learn coping strategies to deal with life’s ever-increasing problems. 2. Be a positive role model. Lead by example. Show them how to bounce back. Teach positive social skills and problem solving skills. 3. Catch your kids being successful. Constructive feedback validates and reinforces their positive behaviour, building self-esteem. 4. Help your child express what’s on their mind to open up communication channels. Encourage them to write down what’s worrying them in their diaries or journals. Urge younger children to associate each emotion with specific facial expressions, body language and an emoticon. 5. Discuss family issues like illness, death and divorce. Discuss world events like war and natural disasters on a level they can grasp. Kids who watch disturbing images on TV may worry about their own safety and of the people they love. Talk to your kids about what they see and hear, and monitor what they watch on TV so you can help them understand what’s going on. 6. Immerse your child into an environment of selfconfidence, self-awareness and emotional awareness. Let children play creatively. 7. Give children time-out to relax. Teach kids slow deep breathing for relaxation.

Doctors are prescribing depression and anxiety medication at a disturbing rate. More and more children are struggling to cope with life, displaying out-of-control behaviour and seeking counselling services and psychologists.

8. Teach your child simple meditation techniques. Start with a comfortable position, palms up, eyes closed, take slow deep breaths. Visualize being calm.

My personal story: Parents of one of my school students repeatedly harassed me until I could take no more. I developed post-traumatic stress disorder but luckily I’ve recovered. After I was released from hospital, I returned to teaching determined to empower my class with resilience skills.I’m now a passionate mental health author-teacher for kids and grown-ups delivering pro-active coping skills.

9. Most importantly, ensure your child gets enough sleep, exercises every day and eats a healthy diet. Together we can empower our children to become more resilient.

Kids need empowering stories to nurture positive self-talk and learn coping strategies to deal with life’s ever-increasing problems. So, how can we make our children MORE resilient to withstand the pressures of modern life? How can we as parents and teachers help our children to be happier, healthy and mentally stronger?

I urge you to support the mental health and positive wellbeing of our children. What can you do to help a child be happier today? -----------------------------

GOURMET

Picnicthein

As the weather warms up and the days get longer our thoughts turn to catching up with friends and family, but cost and time restrictions plague many of us, writes Suzanne Walker. Time spent with friends at a local park or recreation area is free and gets us all out of the usual monotony of the day to day working week. So organize a friendly footy or cricket game with your friends and head to a local park. There are plenty to choose from in the Logan area. Food can be simple, healthy, refreshing and made ahead of time.

• For drinks, freeze 100% juice into plastic containers or purchase the ready prepared tetra packs from the supermarkets. On the day the frozen drinks can be used as extra cooling for the Esky as well as having cold drinks on hand for the picnic. • Make some iced tea the day before the picnic. Pour two litres of boiling water over six tea bags and let steep for 10 minutes. Remove tea bags and chill. Add sugar syrup, lemon juice, mint and orange slices.

Snacks

Instead of the chip and dip option, cut up some sticks of carrot, celery, capsicum, spring onions and radish, place in ice cold water the day before in the fridge. The cold water will make the vegies curl. Serve with either a purchased dip or simply blend a tin of drained chickpeas with a table spoon of tahini, lemon juice, two chopped garlic cloves and seasoning for a quick hommus.

Just Yummy Curry

TUESDAY

Lunch

For a quick healthy lunch, purchase some smoked chicken breasts, a bag of mixed lettuce and a punnet of cherry tomatoes. • Wash the lettuce and tomatoes and place in a plastic bowl. • Chop the chicken ready for transportation and store in a separate container. • A simple vinaigrette (1/3 oil and 2/3 vinegar) can be added when you get to the park. • If you prefer some fresh chicken breasts, these could be poached off the day before.

Dessert can be as simple as a fruit salad. You may have noticed the trend toward serving everything from drinks to dessert in old glass jars. This reminded me of a grated fruit salad that my mother used to make and serve in glass jars back in the 1960’s. • Mum grated three apples, a pineapple and a pawpaw into a bowl, squeezed the juice and flesh of two oranges over the mix, along with the pulp of two passionfruit and a tablespoon of icing sugar. • Gently mix and pack into a large glass jar and take to the picnic.

I have been a member of the Logan Chamber of Commerce for close to 25 years. During this time I have had the opportunity to meet many fellow business people in Logan, local politicians, heads of Police as well as important guest speakers. I would never have met these people in the normal events of any week. When I commenced my business in 1999 I would not have been able to get off to

Barry & Jenny Lane The Coffee Club - Springwood, Loganholme & Logan Mega Centre a ‘flying’ start selling printer cartridges and doing printer repairs without the Chamber. I had an instant data base to work from and I found that some of my customers passed on referrals to their friends. It is the old fact of life, people love dealing with people they know and trust, and a slogan I have pushed within the Chamber of Commerce is “Logan businesses buy off Logan businesses”.

2014 Australia Day Logan City

The Lane Family have owned and operated our three stores in Logan for the past 11 years. Our family business has been highly successful with a solid reputation of excellence in hospitality. Our businesses would not be in the position that they are today without the strong support and assistance given to us by the Logan Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has provided us with wonderful networking opportunities

There are many opinions about lucky and unlucky numbers based on folklore, numerology or just because you like a particular digit, writes Dawn Alice.

The Chinese are renowned for their superstition of numbers. Vehicle plates, telephone numbers and addresses avoid thirteen. High-rise buildings skip floor thirteen altogether. When the word ‘four’ is spoken in Cantonese, it actually sounds like ‘death’ and so one of the numerous associations of thirteen with death arose as 1+3=4. 24 and 104 are also considered ill-omened. The Chinese regard eight as belonging to the earth and auspicious. The symbol for the configuration of eight is known as the ‘Infinity’ and is recognised as a sideways figure eight. The perpetual indication is said to be a never-ending energy. When you write the number ‘8’ you can do so continually without lifting your pencil. Particularly charmed is the ‘mystical knot’. This is the image of 8 repeated three times, 888.

Native American Belief

Contrary to the cursed number four and thirteen of Chinese convention, the Native Americans revere the number four. Being a community who respect nature, they associate it with earth. The four directions and winds of South, East, North and West are acknowledged as a grounding influence. Because of their reliance on the earth for survival, four is associated with abundance.

Seasonal Numbers

Numerology and Favoured Numbers

There are no bad numbers, although on an individual basis, certain numbers resonate with some people better than others. When this is the case, you would consider them as ‘beneficial’. Contrary to belief, the lucky number is not the full birthdate added together — this is the Ruling or Life Lesson Number, which reflects life experiences, which are not necessarily an advantage. The day of our birth appears to be the luckiest personal number for most people. I am born on the 30th and the numbers three and thirty have played a role in any blessings that I have experienced. The more often a digit is visible, typically without apparent cause, take notice; it is likely your valuable friend. As an example, the number five might stand out on the registration plate of the vehicle in front of you, or you always get a table number five when you dine at a café. Observe what number pays you a visit the most and then make it habitual. Request your friendly number when you book hotel rooms, buying raffle tickets or selecting seating at the cinema.
