oday 69% of all part-time and 35.7% of full-time employees in Australia are women. Women also represent one third of small business owners. While the rates of participation of women in the workforce has almost doubled over the last two decades, the advantages women bring to the workplace, to business and to politics, due to their innate traits and skills, is also being recognised.

T

Relationship builders and connectors Women are relationship builders and natural-born social networkers. In this era of relationship marketing and social media, they are the masters (or mistresses) of social communication. According to John Ingrisano, The Freestyle Entrepreneur, “women tend to focus on cooperation and community rather than competition and go-it-alone-individualism.” Research confirms that women understand that collaboration and networking can bring about shared marketing efforts and research – essential especially for the entrepreneur. Rather than seeing similar or complementary businesses as “competitors” women see them as “colleagues” and “opportunities”. In general, women are compassionate givers that choose inclusivity over exclusivity – a necessity in the diverse workplaces of today. Women naturally encourage others and give inspiration. But Dana Manciagli, author of Cut the Crap, Get a Job, warns that “people in the workplace should not mistake this generosity for weakness. It’s not so

much about being ‘motherly’ but about ‘inspiration’, checking in on other people and making sure that everyone is okay.”

Emotional intelligence and listening skills A woman’s ability to value and build relationships has a lot to do with her emotional intelligence and intuition. Studies have found that women, on average, have a slightly higher emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) than men. Emotional intelligence means having selfawareness, empathy and the ability to listen. Women are generally good at asking questions and are patient listeners, willing to learn about others’ needs, feelings, objections, concerns and points of view. Studies show, too, that women are apt at reading body language and subtle emotional messages. These traits are proving assets in the field of Family Law, where women are currently dominating the field. Michael Lynch, Director of Michael Lynch Family Lawyers, has an all-female staff and definitely feels women have much to offer in Family Law. “The list is almost endless, but what women have to offer certainly starts with strong abilities in active listening, empathy and organisation. The ability to gather relevant information from someone who is quite often distressed, while showing a genuinely personal and compassionate side, are vital skills, and the majority of female lawyers excel at this; I would say more so than male lawyers.”

Former Mayor of Logan, Pam Parker, agrees. “I believe that generally women’s emotional intelligence is a great asset to an organisation, particularly when you are dealing with people’s issues.

Multitaskers, engaged leaders Tests by UK psychologists, published in the journal BMC Psychology, reported that men were slower and less organised then women, and that while both sexes struggled to cope with juggling priorities, men suffered more on average. However, previous studies in Sweden found that when it came to spatial tasks, men were better than women. Michael Lynch notes that some of the most efficient practitioners he has worked with are women. “They are efficient because they do need to multitask well as they usually have family commitments as well as their work, said Michael. A Gallup survey in 2012 found that women leaders tend to be more engaged (41%) than men (35%). The flow-on effect of this was that their teams were more likely to be more engaged and higher-performing. Overall, this must lead to better business performance. Research conducted by University of California Berkeley concurs, reporting that “companies who embrace the distinctive traits of female employees see a boost to their bottom line. Caliper goes as far to say that the women’s natural leadership skills are absolutely necessary for companies to continue to thrive. In fact, Pam Parker reminds us that ASX Report 2015 highlighted that companies and boards that have women in leadership bring 20% greater profits to them than those who don’t.

Are women bosses preferred? With all of these positive traits, and the benefits women bring to the workplace, one would think the general consensus is that most workers would prefer a female boss. The fact is the preference to female bosses by workers is rising, but just slightly. According to a Gallup research, 62 years ago of a study group, 66% said that they preferred a male boss, and 5% preferred a female. 25% were impartial.

Sixty years later Gallup’s State of the American Manager report revealed that out of 11,434 adults, 3% preferred a male boss, 20% female and 46% had no preference. The same survey found that employees working for females were generally 6% more engaged than those with a male manager. And female employees working for a female manager were the most engaged of any group of workers. The report shared a few reasons women make better bosses, directly quoted from participants – all of which confirm some of the very traits and characteristics outlined in this article as part of the Female Advantage:

“There is someone at work who encourages my development “In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress. “In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work. Southside Women in Business lead the way Despite all the wonderful skills and talent women bring to the workplace, many don’t like to sing their own praises. Yet Dana Manciagli says, “We should get the megaphone out and trust our skills as women in the workplace because you will shine and get promoted based on those skills. But it does take confidence for a woman to leverage her strengths in a strong and powerful way. That’s why in this month’s issue we are featuring 16 women in business on Brisbane Southside. These women are leaders in their industries from audiology, to real estate, law, skin health and not-forprofit services, and more. Many of these women have worked their way from the bottom to the top, becoming business directors and owners. For example, Gail Ker OAM, CEO of Access Community services,

began her career earlier on in life in voluntary work, helping a migrant women. Now she finds herself in a senior management role at Access and the humble recipient of an OAM and numerous community awards, such as the recent Ambassador for Peace award. Many of these women have achieved so much while raising families or going through very personal challenges, drawing on their unique traits and strengths, and in many cases a strong survivor spirit. They are living proof that women certainly do bring many advantages to business and the workplace, and thus to the Australian economy.

Natalie Smith aims for Gold at Rio Paralympics ne of our local elite athletes, Natalie Smith from Meadowbrook, was named as a member of the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team after the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) ofďŹ cially announced the Shooting team that will head to the Rio Games. The London 2012 bronze medallist will headline the team of six set to take on the world in Rio this September. Despite being the least experienced athlete on the London 2012 Australian team, Smith stamped her authority on the shooting range after winning the country’s first medal since the Athens 2004 Games. Australia has won 25 medals in shooting at the Paralympic Games – 15 gold, seven silver and three bronze – since it was introduced at the 1976 Toronto Games. Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) Chef de Mission Kate McLoughlin hopes to see this impressive tally grow at Rio.

O

“I would like to congratulate Natalie on being selected to the 2016 Australian Paralympic Games. Natalie won Australia’s first medal at the London Paralympics, and I’m looking forward to seeing her aim high once again this time around in Rio, McLoughlin said. Smith, who took up Para-shooting at the age of three after a hiking accident left her as a paraplegic, said she is looking forward to being able to cheer on as many Australians as she can once she has finished competing. “Going to a second Game is really different to my first. In London, I tended to just follow along without any idea of what was going on because I was just so excited to be there. This time around I will be able to take a step back, make plans and set goals. I’ll take more control of my training and preparation leading up to these Games. The APC is calling out for Australians to get behind their local athletes. They are also

still fundraising to hit their $7m target to send the team to Rio. Australians can donate at www.paralympic.org.au South City Bulletin is calling for our readers to dig deep and support our local champion!

Men in Black Zumbathon is on again! Zumba community dances to support the Black Dog Institute year and a half ago, a couple of male ZumbaÂŽ instructors got together and thought “Wouldn’t it be great if we ran an event that was run by all guys for a great cause?â€? From here the Men in Black ZumbathonÂŽ charity event was formed to raise money for the Black Dog Institute, a not-for-proďŹ t organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression. The work this organisation does became particularly poignant when a family member of organiser Robert Tyler attempted to take his own life in February last year. The first event was held on Saturday 20 June 2015 during Men’s Health Week. Eleven male instructors and over 120 participants from all ages and abilities danced together for an hour and a half to raise over $2,500 for the Black Dog Institute. The night also highlighted the importance of the “men in our livesâ€? and talking about their health.

Mark your diary: 13–19 June The 13th to 19th of June this year marks Men’s Health Week for 2016. This year’s Men’s Health Week focuses on encouraging communities to start conversations and reflections regarding men’s health and purpose. As part of this week and raising funds for the Black Dog Institute, the Men in Black 2 ZumbathonŽ is coming back bigger and better.

HEADACHES & MIGRAINES with Bertrand Doeuk

Hormonal migraine solution If you suffer from hormonal migraines, you are not alone. Approximately half of all females who suffer from migraines also suffer from hormonal headaches, known as menstrual migraines. This accounts to approximately half a million females in Australia with this disabling condition. Advancement in treatment continues to improve, and a solution to hormonal migraines is now available to help stop severe migraines during that time of the month. If you suffer from this condition, you may have already resorted to drastic medications to either heighten or suppress certain hormones in the body. You may also have tried to skip your menstrual cycle by skipping the sugar pills, or have tried the contraceptive implants to stop your period. All of these drastic measures may help somewhat; however, they are not regarded as the safest nor healthiest way to combat hormonal migraines. Recent studies have shown that hormones are actually not to be blamed. In fact, those with hormonal migraines do not have anything wrong with their hormonal levels. During the first day of the menstrual cycle, when oestrogen levels drop

in all females, a cascade of events occur in some females whereby the body reacts negatively and creates migraine type pain in the head. The reason for this is a hypersensitive brainstem, which has been found in all females experiencing menstrual headaches. The cause is not an abnormal drop in oestrogen. In fact, studies show that oestrogen levels are the same for those experiencing hormonal/menstrual headaches and those who don’t. Fortunately, there is now safe help available to treat this condition, focusing on desensitising a hypersensitive brainstem. This treatment does not rely on medication or any surgical intervention. To stop hormonal headaches, visit the team at The Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic. You don’t need to suffer any longer.

Marketing with JB Wu

Crystallise your message to reach the right audience Small business owners are passionate about their business and they know their products or ser vices inside out. But when asked to summarise their business in 10 seconds, many strug gle. Being able to cr ystallise your message about your business, especially ser vice types businesses, and align your ser vice to the right audience helps to trig ger calls from potential clients in whatever channel of marketing you choose to use. For example, we were approached by an accounting firm to develop marketing materials to attract new clients, and you would probably think that could be boring. But it was actually quite an interesting journey for the client to go through the internal process, identif y the target audience, and decide what key message best aligns the ser vices to potential clients. As we went through the internal process, the client was able to look at which ser vices

they have the best capacity for, and where they want to build their business further. This led to a clear understanding in the next section when customer types were analysed, and the client was able to assess who are the people they really want to target. The message was then developed to align the ser vices with the potential customers. The client was able to apply this k nowledge to build marketing materials in different formats such as pull-up banners, f lyers, stationer y, website and email newsletter etc. He was ver y happy with the results. 6 Retirement R etirement living wi with Chiou See Anderson

Living longer,

living better t is generally acknowledged and accepted that seniors wish to remain in the housing of their choice for as long as possible. This could take the form of a home in a retirement village, remaining in your family home or living with friends and family. The alternative, which is living the balance of your years in a care facility, is simply not a voluntary option. But do you know how to navigate the aged care health system to access the assistance that you need to remain living in your own home?

I

Help available “My Aged Care”, which was introduced on 1 July 2013, is the main entry point to the aged care system in Australia. Its objective is to enable seniors, their families and carers to obtain information on care services, have their needs assessed and access the required services so that they can live at home independently. The Australian government subsidises a large range of aged care services. However, a co-payment is required and this is calculated based on your individual financial circumstance. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | June 2016

Following is the list of care services available to seniors: • Help at home care packages ranging from Levels 1 to 4 • After-hospital (transition) care • Respite care for carers • Residential aged care homes If you have not done so, you should register yourself with “My Age Care”. To do so, you would need to call

1800 200 422 Mon – Fri 8am to 8pm and Sat 10am to 2pm. Have ready the following information before you ring this number. • Your Medicare card • DVA number (if applicable)

The process This website is not particularly user friendly and contains a lot of information that may appear bewildering. The good news is that the person at the end of that number above will help by asking you the right questions and connecting you with the appropriate service provider. The important thing to do is to make sure that you have allocated sufficient time to sit on the phone and that you are not expecting an important call in the next hour or so. In general, you could be kept waiting to be connected for upwards of 20 minutes. Once you get to speak to an operator, it will take about 10–15 minutes to be registered on the system. If you are intending to access care services immediately, it will take another 15– 20 minutes for the operator to assess your care needs.

Whilst this may seem like a tedious process, it is, unfortunately, a necessary step towards maintaining independence at home. Many seniors make the mistake of seeking registration only when they need assistance, and this often leaves them frustrated at the time when they are unwell and short on patience. If you are a friend or family member of someone who needs to be registered, you can help them by going to www.myagedcare.gov.au/ referral. When a referral is received, an operator will ring the care recipient and take them through the registration process outlined above.

STYLING with Moana Robinson before

Makeover magic Styling for life ocal businesswoman Janeen Vosper was excited to win recently at a Logan City Women in Business event a personal make-over by B Styled for Life. Janeen’s style journey illustrates how a professional Image Consultant can be your own fairy godmother, waving her magic wand to show you how to express and highlight your unique qualities through your clothing and accessories, hairstyle and makeup. A makeover lasts longer than just one day – it is all about style for life.

L

The right colours for a fresh look Janeen’ s first step was to discover whether she had warm or cool tones. We looked at the undertone in her skin as well as her hair colour and eye colour. With the right tone a person’s skin colour will look clear and fresh. Then we moved on to look at clarity of colour, contrast and colour value. Janeen’s colour swatch was selected and personalised to determine her “hero” colours and “eye enhancing” colours from her swatch. The swatch chosen had medium intensity with quite deep, fiery colours. As a golden blonde Janeen suited the richness of this colour

body shape and proportions. Janeen was a “Classic’ Style personality. As an “H” shape Janeen was shown styles that highlighted areas above her bust and below the knee. Clothing with straight lines that are uncluttered are best to suit Janeen’s frame. The idea is to focus attention to the legs and face and to create one long vertical. Janeen discovered new colours and styles that she “would never have looked at before”. She received many compliments about her new look and gorgeous outfits at a weekend business conference a few days later. “It was amazing how being open to trying different colours and styles resulted in some stunning additions to my wardrobe,” Janeen said

The makeup used on Janeen was Arbonne Neutral Beige with Apricot Blush, Bronzer, Quartz and Truffle Eyeshadows, Flora Lipstick and Anise Lip Polish – lovely warm medium toned, rich colours with a Sheer Glow Highlighter to accentuate the cheekbones.

Finally, her vision was achieved when she and husband Grant opened their endota spa in Broadbeach and then opened endota spa Manly 18 months ago. Finally, endota spa Garden City was launched successfully 12 months ago. Friends of Jane’s in Melbourne had opened their first endota spa 7 years ago, which Jane saw on a trip back one Christmas. “We loved what we saw, the fitout, the products, the menu, the look, the feel and thought we had best do this in Brisbane!” says Jane. At the time it was difficult to find the right location in Brisbane, which is why they opened their first spa at the Oracle in Broadbeach. The timing was then right 18 months ago to open in Manly, and with the expansion of Garden City, a Westfield was the next best step to increasing brand awareness. “Our spas are beautiful; our staff are highly skilled skincare professionals. endota spa is a haven for the soul, a place for some ‘me’ time,” says Jane. Services include relaxation/deep tissue massage, targeted customising facials, gorgeous body wraps and scrubs and spray tans, manicures/pedicures, waxing and tinting. Jane’s Top 3 Tips 1. 2. Surround yourself with good people and treat them with respect. 3. Stay focused on things that are important and relevant. Don’t waste your energy and time on things that are not within your control.

ynda Pedder has the best job in South East Queensland. She owns a chocolate factory. Not just any chocolate factory but Poppy’s Chocolate, supplier to top hotels and boutique retailers around Australia. When Lynda started the business in 2005, she knew there was one thing she wanted to do – make the best chocolates in Australia, ones that taste as good as they look. Lynda, aka Poppy, set out to discover how to make beautiful colourful and unique chocolates while ensuring the fillings had the best ingredients including real fruit, not just artificial flavours and fondant. The quality of chocolates were something not previously made in Australia. Poppy’s Chocolate originally only wholesaled and so is hidden in the industrial area of Beenleigh. However, in 2011 Lynda made the decision to expand next door and open Poppy’s to the public for retail sales. She wanted the general public to enjoy the same chocolates that 5-star hotel customers had been enjoying for years. The local community embraced Poppy and her business, and Poppy’s is now thriving with buses visiting almost daily. Customers can now watch the chocolates being made during the week and buy gourmet chocolates direct from the factory. It has been a rough ride for Lynda, but she believes facing adversity gives her a better appreciation of being alive and for the customers, staff, suppliers and friends supporting her. Lynda attributes her success to changing her definition of success. She detests how society bases success on people’s bank balance. “We are all successful if we just choose to look at ourselves with different eyes.” Lynda says that being more present, rather than worrying about the future, and facing and moving through fears have been key in her success.

elen was a mum with 5 children and thought she was nothing else! After the arrival of her fifth child, she realised she had lost herself in her children and her husband’s business. Helen then sat down and wrote her own life mission statement, which she has managed to realise each and every day in her own business Small Business Improvement Services. Helen had the experiences but had no qualifications, so she set about studying an MBA. With little children it was a juggling experience all of its own. Helen’s passion has always been helping people with the trials of setting up, running, selling a business, looking after a family, economic changes that can hit you at any time, employing staff, and above all the need and understanding to turn around a business to make it into something profitable and successful. Part of her motto is “Build Knowledge, Confidence, Performance and Profitability.” Knowledge is power. It builds confidence, and understanding your own business challenges and changes. Confidence is your mindset – the barometer of your business. Your mindset is the plastic chair you tie your mind and business too. You have to believe in your own abilities. Performance – JUST do it, measure what you do, and have a coach or a mentor to keep you focused and on track. Profitability – Helen says, “Business is a game of numbers and relationships managed by systems and processes.” You have to know your numbers.

ince Lucky Ramya Tennekoon founded Stellario Realty in Wishart in 2013, she has become a highly valued member of the local community. Lucky comes from a background rich in sales and training. When previously working with another real estate agency, she realised very quickly that there is a better and faster way to sell properties instead of the long-winded traditional process. Lucky, therefore, courageously decided to open her own boutique agency in the heart of Wishart. Lucky pushes the market boundaries to achieve the best possible price for her clients. She doesn’t work like a ‘sale factory’ agent; she takes a limited number of listings and focuses on them. Statistics show that her average selling time in the market is only 9 days! A strong negotiator and communicator, Lucky listens closely to her clients and works hard to help them realise their property goals. Lucky doesn’t rely on other agents bringing her business income. She is the only committed sales agent at Stellario, and with her support team, there is no task too big or too small to handle. Lucky is also a strong believer in the importance of community and has been contributing to a number of charity projects and local events over the last few years, as well being an active member of Southside Chamber of Commerce. Her Stellario Foundation sponsors a home for abandoned elderly women in Sri Lanka, her birth country. This is Lucky’s way of giving back. 3. Be kinder than you need to be … You never know what battle someone is fi ghting. Because of this overall philosophy, Springwood Wellness Centre offers free fi rst classes plus a Free Discovery Consultation so patients can fi nd out whether their particular problems may be able to be helped.

argo Hayes and her husband run two MoleChex skin cancer clinics, having recently opened at Coorparoo. Initially her role was that of purely practice manager, for which her MBA in business management facilitated the expansion program. Margo also saw the growing need to assist patients who, in addition to regular skin cancer checks, wanted to rejuvenate, take preventative action and look after their skin. This led to further training and Margo becoming a qualified Aesthetic consultant. As Queensland has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, we also have the greatest amount of skin damage, premature wrinkles and ageing. “Growing old is inevitable but looking old is optional,” says Margo. The clinic provides full skin cancer checks and has its own operating theatre for removal of significant lesions. The clinic also utilises some wonderful new medical grade, non-invasive procedures that help people look their best and help reduce the effect of ageing. What’s more, these new advances have absolutely no down time with amazing results. The Pelleve skin tightening procedure, which uses radio frequency to heat beneath the surface of the skin to stimulate collagen production, is revolutionary and continues to repair for months afterwards. Coorparoo is a bulk billing practice for all skin cancer checks and new patients are welcome. Margo’s most important piece of advice to prevent sun damage to your skin is to wear sunscreen every day and avoid being exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

ne of the most important drivers of Mrs Donna Anderson’s passion for her position as Head of Canterbury College is her determination to ensure that the young people moving through their education are faced with the best outcomes at the end of their school journey. Overseeing industry partnerships, a new strategic plan and direction for Canterbury to benefit students, staff and the wider community, and creating a College of Innovation where all eyes are fi rmly on the opportunities of the future have seen Donna’s efforts recognised nationally and internationally. Donna has been invited to present in schools around the world to share the innovation and planning which she has implemented at Canterbury. She participated in the World Educational Vision Tour, which shared the latest information which will enhance learning at Canterbury. “Education is not stagnant – it is ever-changing, and we need to cater for every student in this changing world,” said Donna. “The jobs that we have now will not be the jobs of the future, so we need to ensure our young men and women go into the new business world equipped with what they need to prosper. “We do not operate in a ‘business as usual’ space at Canterbury. We operate in ‘catering for individual needs’ and we seek to personalise learning so that our students can enter the changing workforce and make a positive and meaningful impact. “Success is most important, and our children need to be empowered to be the change-makers.”

Every School is unique! chools in general have the same purpose; that is to nurture the development of our younger generation to be the whole person that they are, and to be the best that they can be. Every school, however, has a slightly different emphasis on the path they take to help children to develop. Each school therefore has its own unique motto, which express the values and the path that that particular school embraces. Similarly, each student is unique! How to choose the right school for their child is top of parents’ minds. What are the values of the school? Does the school emphasise academic achievements? Does the school provide the right mix of co- or extra-curriculum? The yearly ‘Our Schools’ feature in South City Bulletin provides prospective students and parents with a snapshot of our local schools. It’s an opportunity for schools to showcase the uniqueness of what they offer, and a chance for prospective students and parents to discover the options before them. Such offerings range from inquiry-based learning and curriculum to extracurricular activities, vocational and academic pathways, and even values education.

S

While there has been recent research and debate regarding the benefits of private school education versus state school education, in the end what is paramount is which school ticks all the right boxes for you and your child. The educational experience has to be a positive one for the whole family. And with what our Southside schools have on offer, you’re sure to find a school that’s the right fit.

Job satisfaction

Tales of mice and children hen my daughter announced she wanted a puppy for her birthday, I was not keen. Having only recently toilet trained my youngest child, I did not relish the thought of training a dog to do ‘wee wees’. Fortunately, fate intervened. When a friend asked us to mind her pet mouse for the weekend, my daughter’s heart was captured, and so we found ourselves agreeing that she could have mice for her birthday. I happily reasoned that we could easily handle these low maintenance critters, all safe and cute in a cage, with little care required other than changing food and water. So we became the owners of two white mice. On the morning of her birthday, my daughter cuddled them, sang to them, and named them Daisy and Molly. We were pet owners with all the joy and little responsibility. All was right with the world. That is until a few weeks later when I heard a cry that changed everything. “Mum, Molly has had babies!” I rushed, perplexed, to the mouse cage and found my daughter beaming with excitement. Glaring back at me were ten tiny pink jelly bean sized babies. There was no denying that Daisy and Molly were parents. My kids made numerous phone calls to announce the “new arrivals”. After some Googling, a friend informed us that the mice gestation period is only 19 days, and mice can get pregnant again 24 hours after delivery. Using her year two maths abilities, my eldest daughter calculated that at this rate, we could have over a million mice by next Christmas.

Key elements to finding fulfilment in your work

A quick trip back to the pet shop with the ‘parent’ mice confirmed that we had accidentally been sold a male and a female, instead of two females. So our mice were re-named Molly and David, and my children were elated to have so many new pets all at once. My husband and I began to gently hint that we really couldn’t keep all ten mice. After much disappointment and tears, they finally agreed to keep one of the female babies and send the rest back to the pet shop when they were weaned. Life seemed simple again, until a few weeks later when we noticed that Molly was looking very large in the tummy. It seemed that in our confused state we did not separate Molly and David soon enough, and Molly was indeed expecting once again. Sure enough, just 21 days after the original birth, ten more mice were born. By this stage. I was pining for that puppy that we should have bought, and I am sure I heard my husband mumble the words “infestation” in his sleep. Just to cap things off, one morning a cage full of mice staged an escape attempt in our garage. It took us two hours to catch them all, and we began to reason that breeding alpacas would have been easier than mice ownership. Eventually, we returned all but two of the females to the pet shop. Our first encounter with pet ownership had been far more complicated than we thought it would be, but we had survived. Now my son’s birthday is looming and he too is requesting a pet. I think it’s time to call the alpaca farm.

“Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” We are all familiar with this expression, but how many people are lucky enough to work in a job they truly enjoy? According to global research undertaken by Gallup, as little as 13% of people actually enjoy going to work each day. Furthermore, a staggering 63% claimed that they were “not engaged” with their work, and an additional 24% described themselves as “actively disengaged”, meaning that they felt disconnected and unhappy in their chosen occupation. Apart from suggesting that there are a lot of dissatisfied workers out there, these results are concerning for other reasons. Unhappy workers are not only unproductive, they are inclined to have a higher absentee rate than others, which can wind up costing tax payers millions of dollars each year. Dissatisfaction at work can also lead to mental health concerns. “Productive energy is being lost right across our economy as Australians persevere in jobs that they have either grown out of or simply are not suited to,” says Carole Brown, National President of the Career Development Association

of Australia. “The positive links between worker satisfaction and their productivity is well established. A large factor in finding a satisfying job lies in the ability of people to make informed career and job choices,” Carole explains.

Feeling purposeful A wide variety of career aptitude tests are available to help determine the kind of work that

Job crafting turn your job into the one you want

best suits different people. While this process is important, it appears that feeling purposeful in your work is the key to job happiness, and is a more accurate predictor of vocational wellbeing than earning large incomes and following your passion. According to Professor Martin Seligman, “people who value money more than other goals are less satisfied with their income and with their lives as a whole.” Founder of Positive Psychology, Professor Seligman believes there are six key elements to finding fulfilment at work, regardless of your occupation. Work must be: 1. engaging 2. help others 3. something you’re good at 4. involve being around people you like 5. able to meet your basic needs.

If circumstances prevent you from leaving your current employment, a technique called “job crafting” may be beneficial. According to the Harvard Business Review, job crafting involves a process of re-defining your job to “incorporate your motives, strengths and passions.” This may involve taking on more of the kinds of duties you enjoy, and doing less of those you don’t. Changing how you perceive your role can also be useful. This may involve recognising one part of your job as more meaningful, while acknowledging that another is not. Research undertaken by the Harvard Business Review regarding job crafting revealed that it is a highly successful way of finding fulfilment at work. “Employees (at all levels, in all kinds of occupations) who try job crafting often end up more engaged and satisfied with their work lives, achieve higher levels of performance in their organisations, and report greater personal resilience.” When it comes to finding occupational happiness, it appears that the way you perceive your own purpose and role is key.

y 2055, it’s estimated that nearly twothirds of the world’s population aged over 65 will be living in the Asia Pacific region. Yet by 2055, there will be only 2.7 Australians of working age for every Australian aged 65 years and older. Plus, the number of Australians aged 65+ is projected to more than double by 2055 compared with today; reaching almost 7 million. Our population is getting larger in size and older in age and will require specialised care.

But are we prepared for the increasing care requirements to support our ageing society? After 20 years in the Navy, Jeff Merrett joined the mining industry specialising in logistics and supply. Jeff was sure it was the right decision and it utilised his transferable skill set. Within a few years, due to the downturn in mining, Jeff found himself redundant – a daunting prospect when you are in your mid 50s. Jeff wasn’t ready to retire and although he had limited exposure to the aged care industry, he had heard about the strong employment prospects. “The CHARLTON BROWN team have supported me every step of the way and my trainers even found my practical placement for me,” said Jeff. “I haven’t even finished my studies

Staff motivation How to make the workplace fun and rewarding for staff he most common complaint of staff and workers is that they feel undervalued, not recognised and lack enthusiasm for work. This affects the business, other work colleagues and especially clients as they see and feel the apathy of the staff. And to be honest it makes going to work the worst possible task. Then that leads to staff shortages, staff taking ‘sickies’ and everyone feeling dreadful.

T

T.E.A.M. There are key elements to feeling motivated and feeling recognised and appreciated at work. And it does not just start with the boss; it is TEAM action. As Walt Disney said, “It takes a TEAM to make a DREAM”. I like the acronym for T.E.A.M.

Together Everyone Achieves More Everyone is leader in some way and skilled in some way with whatever they do, so time to access tips to motivate your staff.

20

www.southcitybulletin.com.au | June 2016

Tips for to motivate your staff As we begin ask yourself: 1. What motivates me? 2. What do I want from my peers and work colleagues? 3. How do I like to be praised? 4. If I was rewarded for my efforts what would I want? 5. Who do I admire and feel inspired by?

By putting yourself in others’ ‘shoes’ you will have more compassion and understanding to assist, empower and motivate staff. After all, work is meant to be fun and rewarding with a sense of achievement and gratification for all – no matter what they do. So what tips can be used to motivate staff that will benefit all – and not be like Kevin?

1. Recognition It is important to recognise your staff’s ability. This recognition could be with praise, awards, monthly prizes or a feature photo wall of ‘Employee of the Month’. When you recognise them, they have the opportunity to be motivated and continue that particular behaviour and attitude in all they do. 2. Praise A simple ‘thank’ you or ‘please’ goes a long way for anyone. Praising allows staff to know what they are doing well so they can do more of that task. Praise is feedback for anyone. Praise can be with an email, letter or verbally. Doing this in public and in front of other staff teaches others to behave too. 3. Reward system Everyone likes to be rewarded. It shows a sense of achievement and acknowledgement. You may have a monthly prize in each section of the establishment, charts that show how well each staff member is doing and is graded – by all staff not just the immediate boss.

4. Listen and support To inspire staff, they need to be listened to. This encourages them to offer ideas that may benefit other staff, the business and customers. When we are listened to, staff feel supported and this will stimulate them to work well and be productive. 5. Be the example of what is possible You influence people best when you are the example of what is possible. It is a subtle persuasion that encourages people to be motivated. If you are easy going, caring, professional, courteous and supportive, others will mimic this. Remember, it starts with you. Are you being the example of what is possible so you can lead and support others to be the best they can be?

Lijiang Magical encounters with nature and culture t the end of June, a group of local students will head to China for a Summer Camp and culture exploration. Yes, it is summer in the Northern hemisphere. The trip is a promotional opportunity introduced by South City Bulletin where students will spend the 7 days exploring the local culture and scenery for free. The camp is situated in Lijiang in the SouthWestern province of Yunnan at the foot of the Tibetan highland, rich in natural beauty and ethnic culture.

A feeling of utopia

Lijiang

The dream of a “romantic encounter with life is what drives a lot of people coming to Lijiang. The leisurely paced lifestyle, cobblestones streets meandering along the ancient buildings, with the glacier capped high mountains as a backdrop, all give people that utopia feel of living in another world. You hear stories of people madly falling in love with the place after visiting Lijiang. They quit their jobs in the big city and move to Lijiang to

open a hostel or cafĂŠ or restaurant, just to pursue their dream lifestyle. Many names and sign boards of cafes, hotels and crafts shops can tell the stories of their owners and what they have aspired to. The whole place permeates a magical fusion of beautiful scenery of high mountains and lush green and the timeless architecture, idealism, history and culture. At night the streets come alive, with every restaurant or bar having live

music. The genres vary greatly with singersongwriters, country music, jazz, R&B, and Rock and Roll all in the mix. Stories of romantic encounters are being told many times over.

World Heritage sites There are many ways to get to Lijiang – bus, train or plane. One of the things you will notice when arriving in Lijiang is the high altitude. Your bag of potato chips will inflate like a balloon due to the lower air pressure, and water will start boiling at about 80c. Here’s a fun fact: The highest peak of Yulong Snow Mountain is 5596 metres above sea level, which is about 780 metres higher than the

Alps in Europe and 1200 metres higher than the Rocky Mountains in the US. What brought the world’s attention to Lijiang was the fact that in 1996, two earthquakes in the area destroyed most of the modern buildings while the ancient all wood architectures withstood the quakes. People were in awe by the discovery of the natural beauty and the unadulterated cultural heritage and harmonic existence of different ethnic groups. In 1997, UNESCO listed the three ancient Districts of Lijiang in the World Heritage List. The mix of culture was perhaps no accident as Lijiang was originally a stopping place for the ancient trade route that links Yunnan to Tibet and India, the Tea-Horse Road. Groups of merchants carried teas from Yunnan along the dangerous mountain walkways to Tibet and India and brought back other goods. They were heroic journeys. Nowadays, your visit to Lijiang can be more comfortable and enjoyable, but it will sure steal your heart. Food labelling Are the news laws enough? ew food labelling laws are being introduced to make the Country of Origin clearer. From July 1, it will be mandatory for food grown, produced and made in Australia to carry the Kangaroo triangle symbol. A new bar chart will show the proportion of Australian ingredients, such as with the proposed examples below. This is an obvious win for our local farmers, local manufacturers, local workers and consumers. Although there is an additional cost burden to Australian businesses estimated to be $37 million per year. With the local dairy industry in crisis, this type of legalisation will go a long way to help Australians support our local industries and producers. According to the Australian government “the purpose of improved country of origin information is to enable consumers to make informed choices about the food they buy.” The original announcement came in July 2015, following a February scare over hepatitis-infected berries imported from China.

N

So why is it not about the quality of the food? Country of Origin labelling is a great win for consumers’ choices, but the single most important factor in our health is the quality of our food. Simply, higher food quality means better nutrition and better health.

What about food quality? Arguably, the other benefit should be food quality. Local farmers and producers are subject to higher food standards and regulations, and in some cases the food will be fresher. Fresher foods have higher enzymes, deliver more nutritional content and generally taste better. Sounds like a win-win although the Prime Minister said “this is about the Country of Origin labelling, it’s not about food safety standards. People might have different views about where you are most likely to be confident in the quality of your food, but they’re two separate issues effectively”

There is convincing evidence that nutrition is a major underlying determinant of a range of chronic disease, and associated pre-mature death and disability … Currently, our social, economic and physical environment promotes the consumption of recreational and non-basic foods that are profitable, energy-dense and nutrient poor.

[Report from NSW Government Plan for Preventing Overweight and Obesity in Children, Young People and their families 2009-2011.]

So if the new food labelling laws do not cover food quality, should they? Do we look at our food based on the quality of nutrition? Would a quality rating system help consumers even more? For more information on new Country of Origin food labels, see the government website: www.foodlabels.industry.gov.au

Duolingoreview ave you ever wanted to learn a new language? Perhaps you would like to pick up a few key phrases to use on an upcoming overseas holiday, or maybe you want to strengthen your resume with basic fluency in multiple languages. Whatever your motivations may be, learning a new language has always been a daunting task. Overcoming this sentiment was the primary design philosophy that led to the creation of Duolingo, an app that teaches you a new language with quick and simple interactive lessons, all for free. Duolingo is available on most mobile devices and can also be used directly through your Internet browser. The lessons are very basic exercises in vocabulary building and sentence structure that are presented in simple, intuitive modules that can be completed in a matter of minutes.
