nterest in our past is growing. Television shows such as “Who do you think you are” and genealogical magazines, which trace family histories, are proving more popular than ever. Dean Prangley, President of The Royal Historical Society of Queensland, says “The knowledge of history is important to all, for to understand where you are going requires an understanding of where you have been.” Our feature writer, Amanda Sheehan, decided to take a step back in time to see what the Southside used to be like and where you can go to now to connect with the past.

water was brackish and bad to drink unless boiled. Toilets were deep pits out the back and you walked everywhere unless you could afford a horse. With no refrigeration, you ate what you grew and bought meat from the butcher as soon as he killed the animal otherwise it would decay quickly in our climate.” Clearing and cultivating dense scrub in order to facilitate development was back-breaking work. Medical help was hard to come by so childbirth often meant loss of life for mother and baby. Despite these adversities our early settlers kept arriving and persevered, like the Mayes family.

Old Brisbane Town When Lieutenant Henry Miller, the First Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal settlement, sailed down the Brisbane River in May 1825 and founded the town of Brisbane, he could never have imagined the changes that would occur over the next 190 years. Life in “Brisbane Town”, which was deemed a suitable location to relocate the worst convicts from Sydney, was far removed from today’s comfort and convenience. Dean Prangley explains that life was hard and full of risks. “If you cut yourself and it became infected, you probably died. Malaria, dysentery, typhoid and other diseases were common and life expectancy was much less than today. The

Historical home – Mayes Cottage In 1871 John and Emily Mayes arrived from England with their two small children and took up 321 acres of land in the area known as Scrubby Creek, which would eventually become Kingston. The family built a slab hut no larger than a modern-day bedroom, which would be their home for 16 years. Emily cooked for her family of nine on an open fire and used a hollowedout anthill for an oven. The family’s hard work

The heritage listed house-museum has an open day every May. Volunteer Noel Clarke believes that the site is interesting for all ages. “Younger people can’t imagine what life was like without technology, and older people enjoy reminiscing,” says Noel.

The Scarlett May Foundation (SMF) is launching officially on 10 October with a 53 km run by co-founder Aidan Lamberth followed by a Launch Luncheon in Mackenzie. The SMF supports the families of critically ill children or those who have experienced loss through providing meals, bereavement counselling and momentos. The foundation was created by Aidan and his wife Renee after losing their 11-month-old daughter Scarlett May to a genetic disorder in 2014 and seeing other parents in similar situations needing more support. The launch fundraising goal is $10,000. To read more and book your seat or sponsor visit: www.southcitybulletin.com. au/community/scarlett-may-foundation

Home buyer turn-offs

4

There is a growing inventory of houses on the Brisbane market, and buyers are much choosier than ever before. If you’re planning to sell, it’s important that you put your very best foot forward if you want to sell quickly at a decent price. Wacky paint colours: Some buyer can overlook strange decor choices and picture the house painted white or in tasteful neutrals, but many can’t. Furthermore, colour can have a strong effect on mood, both positively and negatively. Don’t take the chance. Dirt: A house for sale should be as near to spotless as you can make it. Particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, grimy grout, stained counter tops, dishes in the sink and crunchy floors are definite turn-offs. Do at least a light cleaning before every showing and a more thorough clean each weekend before the open house. Odd (or oppressive) smells: If you smoke, at least take it outside while the house is up for sale. In fact, any noticeable odours, whether from pets, lingering cooking smells or even heavy perfume, can turn away a potential buyer. Use fabric refresher on upholstery and air fresheners or room scents where needed, but use a light hand. Too many pets: It’s hard to believe that not everybody loves Fluffy, Fifi and Rover as much as you do, but they don’t. A dog that comes barking fiercely to the door as soon as you ring the bell or worse, a whole pack, is unnerving. One cat sleeping quietly in a chair might be fine; a noisy (and possibly smelly) menagerie isn’t. Try to find temporary homes for your friends, at least while the house is being shown. Good Debt vs Bad Debt: What’s the difference?

Vision issues with headaches?

Warren Buffett once said that “it’s much easier to stay out of trouble now than to get out of trouble later”. So how can you ensure you stay out of financial trouble? Knowing the difference between Good Debt, Bad Debt and how to manage it is a great place to start. In a nutshell, Good Debt creates value and increases your asset and financial position. For example, loans secured against assets that will accumulate in value, generate another source of income for you and are tax deductible are considered Good Debt (i.e. investment property loans or business loans). Conversely Bad Debt decreases your financial position and is detrimental to your wealth creation if used to buy items that will fall in value, won’t generate any income for you and are not tax deductible; for example, credit cards and personal loans that are used to purchase luxury goods, cars or holidays where no income can be derived and value will decrease over time. There are a number of ways in which you can manage your debt. Utilising a good debt recycling structure to maximise your investment debt for greater tax effectiveness and using your investment income to accelerate the reduction of your non-tax deductible debt (i.e. your Owner Occupied debt) is one positive way to go. For more information on how you can benefit from debt recycling, call our office on 07 3808 4433.

I often get asked the question, “Why do my eyes become sensitive to light during a headache” or “Why do I see colourful lines, shapes and blurred vision before my migraine starts?” The majority of these patients visit an optometrist who often finds there is nothing wrong with their vision. Altered vision can become debilitating to the point that a sufferer can become temporarily blind. Symptoms such as seeing colourful shapes, lines, dark or white spots are called ‘Aura’. Aura usually occurs before the onset of a migraine attack and is classified as Migraine with Aura. This occurs in approximately a third of all migraineurs. If you experience aura you will often find it is a warning sign that a migraine will occur within 20 to30 minutes. The question is, “Why does the vision get impaired during a headache and migraine attack?” The answer lies in a neurological disorder whereby cranial nerves and the brainstem become hypersensitive. There is a safe and effective solution that not only stops aura symptoms but also chronic headaches and migraines without surgical intervention, or taking endless amounts of medication. Feel free to call our headache clinicians for further information on how to stop your headaches and migraines.

Collagen Induction Therapy How can laser and skin needling help your skin’s appearance? Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), also known as micro-needling, is a minimally invasive rejuvenation treatment for the skin designed to improve wrinkles, scars and other skin flaws. CIT is suitable for all areas of the face, neck and hands, and for all skin types. It is performed with a surgical instrument containing micro-needles that create micro wounds in your skin. These wounds stimulate your body’s natural collagen production in order to heal the wound. Minimal anaesthetics can minimise any discomfort during the procedure, but the needles used are so small problems are rare. Usually, CIT requires a minimum of 3 treatments to properly rejuvenate an area of the skin. In the case of scar healing, however, at least 5–6 treatments would be needed,

spaced 5–6 weeks apart. Ideal candidates are those who wish to: improve the aesthetical looks of their skin; slow the ageing process; and improve the appearance of a scar. Some high-precision treatments can include lasers, which are able to focus on a specific area without affecting the area around. Recovery and after-care Post-treatment, the skin is usually slightly pink and some mild bleeding might occur, depending on the length of the needle used. After around 3 days, you should have fully recovered from a treatment session. It might, however, take up to 2 months before you start seeing the full benefits. To enhance results, it is advisable to use skin care products at home, and your skin practitioner might suggest you use a roller, with short needles. It’s advisable not to buy one over the internet as you might end up with

a medical grade device that isn’t suitable. There are almost no risks associated with collagen induction therapy. The most common occurrences posttreatment are dry skin and slight discoloration, which are likely to pass within a week. Use a trained, licensed professional Collagen Induction Therapy can only be performed by trained and licensed medical professionals and ideally only in a medical facility. When looking for a skin practitioner, be sure to ask about prior experience with CIT. If you don’t feel comfortable, seek a more experienced skin practitioner. You and your skin deserve it. Double recognition John Paul College wins prestigious HKABA Business Development Award and celebrates one of its own students’ achievements irector of John Paul International College (JPIC) Russell Welch and staff were excited that JPIC won the Business Development Award category as announced at prestigious Hong Kong Australia Business Association’s Business Awards night at The Hilton, on September 4. A twist to the story is that one of the College’s Grade 11 students, Taj Pabari, was also nominated in the same category. While the College pipped Taj at the post to win the award, the school is very proud of Taj’s achievements. The HKWBA Awards Program provides recognition and incentive to individuals and companies who strive for excellence in international trade between Australia and Hong Kong SAR and China. South City Bulletin was proud to be media sponsor for these prestigious awards.

Students driving entrepreneurism Fifteen-year-old Taj Pabari is leading the way in entrepreneurism. His successful business “56 Creations” sees Taj combine his two passions – Lego and technology – to create and distribute kits for children to assemble their own Android tablets. 56 Creations has 25 employees internationally, with the kit parts being manufactured in the UK and the kits assembled in China. The ImaginTech

Kits are currently in schools in Australia and London as a pilot test. Russell Welch said schools like John Paul College must continue to be on top of the game in terms of fostering entrepreneurship in students and adapting to students’ own vision. “Entrepreneurship used to lie with the

leadership of organisations. Then it moved into the classroom, and now it belongs with the students,” says Russell. “If we don’t keep up with the students, they will push us and lead the way,” says Russell. Taj and other fellow College students are doing just that. And Russell confirms that is a good thing.

Overall southern Italy is a muststop place to visit on any European adventure. The Italian people are very welcoming and friendly – though obviously the pickpockets were just a bit too ‘welcoming’ for my liking. But if you are vigilant and well-prepared, you will have a great time. Happy and safe travels!

At Sorrento the Hotel Regina was a perfect location for our stay, with 360 degree panoramic views that stretched from the surrounding green hills to the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. It was close to the town centre with its bars, shops and restaurants. The staff at Hotel Regina went the extra yards in supporting us on arrival as unfortunately some students on the Circumvesuvian Train from Naples had had a bit of ‘fun’ and stole my wallet from my bum bag under my shirt while I was picking up our suitcases – in

the space of 15 seconds! I saw them waving it in the air in triumph as they exited the trains. Darn! I cancelled my credit cards via my brother in Australia, but not quickly enough. Within 20 minutes the scallywags had racked up $8,500 in charges. Fortunately, I wasn’t liable for the charges and my credit cards were reissued to me within a couple of days. The Hotel Regina staff did all they could to make us feel really special after our ordeal. We just got on to enjoy the rest of our stay. First stop – Pompeii!

Q:

I am stuck in an emotional and financial rut and would like any insight into how to get out of it. —Lenny

Hi Lenny. I feel the key here is to look at your financial DNA and how you view and deal with your money and finances. Then get a practical plan, such as a budget, in place and the self-discipline to follow it. Otherwise this won’t change. As for the emotional rut, you are allowing old personal behaviours of fear and jealousy hold you back from health engagements with people, and this needs to also be assessed.

Q:

Am I on the right path with study? I’m starting to second guess myself. —Marka

Hello Marka. My sense is that you are so caught up in the study and pressure thing that you haven’t been balancing that with some everyday things like sport, recreation, fun or socialising that will help give you some balance. If you can defer for 6 months to a year, you will get a clearer picture on what you really want to learn about and do as a career, rather than trying to please others.

I am hoping my ancestors may have a few helping things to share. Thank you for your generous time. —Maria

Hi Maria. You know your ancestors walk beside you and with you all of the time. They are asking me to pass on the need for you to do more of your work for them, to step into the role of healer in the way that fits and works for you best. Make sure you bring that beautiful bubbly personality with it as this allows others to be drawn to you. I also want to bring to your awareness that you have had a shift in consciousness and are opening to new ways, and it may seem unsettling. Just ground yourself and trust that adjustments are being made

lmost unheard of 10 years ago, the significant benefits of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has become better known outside of elite and professional uses. Almost common place now within personal training, clients’ results speak for themselves: improvements in general health, weight loss, and strength and fitness.

training, greater Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and less stress hormones, such as cortisol, which is associated with fatigue, breakdown, depressed immune system, higher insulin and higher weight gain. • Better fitness and strength gains • Adds variety to your training • Reduces overuse injuries

Generally, it is all about speed and intensity and lasts for normally 20 to 30 minutes. It can be either cardio or strength and uses specific types of protocols and timings for different training goals. The most well-known is called Tabata Intervals, which is extremely effective for body fat loss and increasing aerobic and anaerobic fitness. This type of training has a high demand on the body, and depending on your fitness level and bio-mechanics, HIIT is not normally recommended every day. You should consult a fitness professional prior to starting. They can determine which exercises would be best based on your fitness and bio-mechanics.

Exercise 1 = 20 sec. exercise, 10 sec. rest for 8 sets = 4 mins + 1 min rest

Exercise 3 = 20 sec. exercise, 10 sec. rest for 8 sets = 4 mins + 1 min rest Exercise 4 = 20 sec. exercise, 10 sec. rest for 8 sets = 4 mins + 1 min rest

• Shorter workouts • Greater Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). This can increase your metabolic rate and elevated fuel consumption resulting in greater fat loss for up to 2 to 3 days after exercise. • Enhanced anabolic (building and repairing) hormones from anaerobic (short bursts)

Good luck! When you finish, you will know that you have been HIIT!!!

BEAUTY with Claire Mason

Keep Looking Good Tips to stop stress impacting your health and appearance tress levels are higher than ever and can directly impact the health and appearance of your skin and body. Fortunately, implementing a few daily stress-management techniques can help.

S

Exercise and alkalize When stressed, the body’s digestive system can go haywire and become more acidic, leading to skin dryness, oiliness, blemishes, dullness, eczema and dermatitis. Boost your circulation with at least three sessions of cardiovascular exercise a week. Eat plenty of alkalising foods such as apple cider vinegar, green leafy vegetables and non-animal protein sources. Chewing your food well will alkalise it further. Supplementing with probiotics and essential fatty acids can balance the gut and lower inflammation.

Step away from stress Stressed facial expressions or squinting at computer screens can cause deep, long-lasting dynamic lines. Notice when you are frowning or your mouth is turned down and step away from what is stressing you – your computer screen, phone or in-tray – then give yourself a 10 minute facial massage.

Press your fingertips into the middle of your eyebrows and work them all the way around your orbital bones to relax your facial muscles.

Good sleep practices Regular lack of sleep can affect your skin’s regeneration functions, resulting in dullness, fatigue, bloodshot eyes and under-eye circles and bags. You will feel less like exercising, leading to weight gain. Do vigorous exercise earlier in the day and before bed do some gentle stretches and deep breathing. Allow fresh air to circulate and remove all electronic devices. Avoid caffeine after lunch and play meditation CDs to relax. Swap unhealthy habits like excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and comfort eating with good habits: taking a walk, making a juice of green, leafy vegies, drinking water, meditating and using positive affirmations. Finally, remember to smile … Research suggests smiling, even if it’s pretend, can improve your mood and induce relaxation.

EDUCATION SKILLS TRAINING with Amanda Sheehan

Remember the Days of the Old Schoolyard Amanda Sheehan reflects on the changes over four generations of schooling y grandmother, my father, my children and I are among the thousands of students who have passed through the gates of Runcorn State School since it opened in 1901.

M 1919

When my late grandmother, Hilda Kurth, began her schooling in 1919, nearly all of her school work was done with a slate and slate pencil. She had homework every night, but doing chores around the farm before and after school was always a priority. The long walk to the two-classroom school, down Beenleigh Road in bare feet, was part of life. Amazingly, she was part of a cohort who planted a plot of pine trees on the school oval that I would play under sixty years later. Hilda Wilson (Nee Kurth)

1949 There was no such thing as being driven to and from school when my father, Laurie Johnson, began school in 1949. As soon as the bell rang at 3 pm students scrambled to their push-bikes to head home. There were no uniforms, and wearing shoes and a hat was uncommon. Laurie describes life in the composite classrooms as much stricter than today. Students who talked in class were given the cane, otherwise known as “the cuts”, usually across their hands. Parent volunteers were unheard of as parents were too busy working their farms.

1977

Amanda Sheehan on her first day at school 1977

When I began Grade 1 in 1977, the school was bursting at the seams with over 1000 students. Wearing a uniform, shoes and a hat were optional. All lessons were

conducted on a blackboard, and even though corporal punishment wasn’t to be abolished until 1995, the cane was still administered albeit infrequently. The construction of our own swimming pool in Grade 3 was very exciting, but I was sad that this meant the forestry plot my grandmother had helped plant had to be cut down.

2011 to now My eldest daughter Amy began Prep in 2011; her siblings, Emma and Thomas, soon followed. They are now in Grades 4, 3 and 2 respectively. I am constantly amazed at the role technology plays in their everyday schooling. Blackboards are no more and each classroom has an electronic whiteboard with internet access.

iPads and computers provide students a world of information at their fingertips. Enrolment numbers have ebbed and flowed over the years with the changing demographics of the area, and numbers are now much smaller than ‘my day’. This fosters a small community feel, which I imagine is similar to when my father and grandmother were students. Thankfully, hats, shoes and uniforms are now compulsory! My children find it hard to imagine that there was once a time when there were no cars. But the one thing we have in common is that they love being at school just as much as I did. I know that every day they are making happy memories of their school days and maybe one day a fifth generation will attend Runcorn State School.

HOUSE with Robyn Pacey

Updating the outdated

Are some of the fixtures, fittings and decorative items in your home outdated? If you’re thinking of selling, it might be time for some updates. Here are some simple solutions to some outdated features. Celery timber kitchen cupboard doors and coloured laminate bench tops in bright reds, oranges, yellows and lime greens – Paint over the cupboard doors with laminate paint and apply two coats of granite paint to the bench tops. Fluorescent ceiling lights – Replace with track lighting and direct individual lights to particular areas where tasks are performed. Wallpaper borders that wrap around the walls at chair height or under the cornice – Hire a wallpaper steamer from a local hardware store and remove the border, then you can repaint the room in a neutral colour. Shag pile and floral carpets – Pull up the carpet and see what is underneath. You may find some great looking floorboards that, with a good sand and polish, will look fabulous. Timber door handles and knobs – Remove one handle/ knob off the door or drawer to take with you to the hardware store. Match the distance of the screws with a new, modern door handle of the same width as this way you will avoid making extra holes as the new handles will fit perfectly. Popcorn ceilings or old stucco ceilings and polystyrene foam ceilings tiles – The best remedy is to fix new plasterboard over the entire area. Then paint them. You will love the new look!

GARDENING with Nancy Kent

GOURMET with Arwen McGregor

Cottage Gardens The ‘no rules’ garden that harkens to the ‘old days’ A cottage garden is the original garden style of sustainable living. Characterised by a medley of small fruit trees, flowers, herbs and edible plants, a cottage garden is rich in plant biodiversity that helps to sustain a healthy ecology without the need for chemicals.

Mix it up and be creative With this style, garden beds are filled to overflowing with pollinating attractors, and there are winding pathways where people can meander peacefully. Sometimes vegetables are displayed in rustic and ornamental ways. Well-known gardening identity, Noel Burdette, has created cottage gardens that utilise the best Queensland sub-tropical plants, which, when planted and nurtured, create an evolving ecology of life. “Cottage gardens present better with a level of delicacy. Plants all dancing and singing together, says Noel.

Start with shady shrubs The bones of a cottage garden are flowering shrubs, which provide shade protection from the wind and

sun and roots that assist the habitat of microbial life. Perennial shrubs and deciduous trees are especially good in our hot summer, like the Santa Rosa plum and the tropical pear tree, Pyrus Comminus. Try incorporating food plants like snake beans and melons on trellises and pumpkins to cover the soil. One Thousand Incredible Edibles Half-Day Workshop $55 Limited Places | 31 October 10am to 2 pm Learn about garden soil, using less water and improving gardening methods to grow super foods at home. High Tea A short history lobally, the terms ‘high tea’ and ‘afternoon tea’ have been intermixed. A general understanding is that a high tea is a selection of sandwiches, scones, sweet slices or cakes plus some hot or cold savoury items. It is usually presented in a form of two- or three-tiered plates and accompanied by hot tea and/or wine. This type of high tea was originally an afternoon tea for the upper classes, which had the leisure to have this light meal to fill the gap before their fashionably late dinner. A high tea for the working classes was more substantial, with breads, cold meats or pies and vegetables. In regional areas of the United Kingdom, you can still hear children being called in for tea, meaning their dinner.

G

Any time, any day In Australia, we enjoy our high teas at any time of the day for a variety of occasions. It is used to replace lunch, for time to catch up and for formal occasions such as an afternoon wedding reception. Tea is still a main component with many different flavours and options available. However, coffee is very much accepted. Of course, in Australia a high tea may have a distinctly Aussie ‘flavour’ with lamingtons, passionfruit melting moments or pumpkin scones. A plethora of gluten-free recipes today mean gluten-intolerant guests don’t miss out. Celebration High Teas are quite often

accompanied by champagne or sparkling wine. It is best to keep your wine selection light and sweeter rather than drier.

Tips for enjoying your high tea party: • Keep the menu simple and within your skills. • Plan how you will serve and present the food for your guests. • Allow plenty of time for your guests to enjoy your high tea. Arwen McGregor | Owner & Host, Devon Pixies Tea House www.devonpixies.com
