Have a
Magical summer In the emerging New World City of Brisbane
L
ord Mayor Graham Quirk’s quest to solidify Brisbane’s place as a New World City means different things to different people. Its development in recent years has certainly attracted global investors and boosted our international profile. But for the average resident like you and me, Brisbane’s development translates into a vastly enhanced leisure and lifestyle experience, which encompasses increasingly diverse ways in which to enjoy our city.
Other planned developments under the 2022 New World Action Plan for Brisbane include: • transformation of Edward Street into a world class retail destination and pedestrian boulevard
Enhancing lifestyle Lifestyle enhancements that have been factored into the 2016/2017 Brisbane City Council budget include library upgrades, competition grade BMX tracks, aqua parks, outdoor gyms in parks, as well as new fishing pontoons, platforms and boat ramps.
Artist’s impression of the Retail-core precinct showing the view from Elizabeth Street.
• opening of a second runway at Brisbane airport • Renewal of New Farm Park and Riverview Terrace public areas
“The completion of the 2022 Action Plan will coincide with a number of defining projects that will place Brisbane squarely on the world stage, including completion of the Brisbane Metro and the Opening of Queens Wharf,” Cr Quirk said. “For this reason, I will continue to invest in international event attraction for Brisbane, skilling our next generation of young people with cutting edge digital skills through the CoderDojo program, and building the Team Brisbane profile in Australia and around the world.”
Movie capital Perhaps proof of its recognition as a New World City, Brisbane has become a highly sought after film destination with filming applications doubling over the past five years. “In the last year alone, Council has approved 338 filming projects including six feature films, which have generated $26 million for the local economy,” Cr Quirk said. “Over the past few years Brisbane has also been featured in films such as San Andreas starring The Rock, Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie and The Railway Man starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. Brisbane’s subtropical climate, historic buildings and outdoor living spaces make it the perfect fit for many filmmakers.” to Page 10

S
ummer is well and truly on the way with the beautiful Queensland humid weather lapping at our doors. It’s time to get the swimmers out again, or better yet, hit the shops for the best swimsuit for the new season. It is no easy task choosing a swimsuit – even some women with the best figures dread the change room in the search for a great piece. I decided to take a close look at some of the great “togs” on the market this season. If I had to choose two brands that I can be 100 percent confident in, by far it would be Jets and Seafolly. Their designs are fashionable and practicable, knowing women’s shapes and sizes and always having a great variety of prints and block patterns. You’re sure to find something to look great in. Both are readily available either in stores or online. BUYING TIP: Purchase a stack online and try in the privacy of your home and send back what doesn’t work.
We are certainly seeing a return of words on the front of swimsuits like this City Beach piece. Stussy SS Link One Piece Swimsuit $99.95
Jet’s amazing block colours are placed in super flattering areas like this asymmetrical number. Asymmetrical Swimsuit $169
Another top contender is Finch Swimwear – especially with a big amount of Australian Made pieces. This print comes in about 16 different styles to mix and match to fit any shape or size. Love this current one with the high waist bikinis. Leilani High Waist Retro Bikini Pant $75
My top pick for the more curvaceous of my lady friends is from Sirens, who have a great selection of vintage pieces. Katharine Swim Shirt Midnight Rose Garden $109
Not only are floral prints definitely trending, like the Seafolly Vintage Rose collection, but the way that Seafolly manage to create exciting new patterns like the wrap underneath tie at back adds a little extra to your swimwear. Ocean Rose Wrap Bralette Bikini Top $99
Wherever you are swimming this summer, don’t forget to slip slop slap – and feel great in your skin, no matter what. Real beauty is in the way you hold yourself, not the swimsuit you are wearing! xx Carly

WINDOW FURNISHINGS with Jarad Drysdale
Are you ready for summer? With temperatures rising, now is the time to get ready for summer. Some of the things you need to prepare for are soaring temperatures, rising power bills and storms. Part of the solution to all three is installing window film (tint). Here’s how: • Temperature reduction. Window film can reduce the temperature coming through the glass by up to 82%. • Save on power bills. Studies have shown power bills can be reduced by 30% when using window film as it reduces the need for air conditioning. • Storm protection. Due to the inherent nature of window film to stick to glass, you’ll have an extra layer of protection in the event of hail or debri hitting during a storm. There’s also many more benefits in having window film installed other than reducing power
More and more Queenslanders are taking advantage of the benefits that window film provides. Hence, the reason there are now so many window film products to choose from. For this reason Great Window Tinting provides a free information pack that also includes free samples and a free quote. HEADACHES & MIGRAINES with Bertrand Doeuk
Are headaches causing you memory or concentration problems? In our clinic we find many headache and migraine sufferers report of cognitive inefficiency, confusion, memory loss and thinking issues. At work patients may avoid hard tasks and perform easier tasks, while at home they may forget and leave out key ingredients when cooking. Speech issues, stuttering, poor vocabulary, word-finding problems, inability to complete sentences and mumbling their words are other extremely frustrating issues, especially if patients are in the middle of an important meeting or out socialising.
Stopping memory and concentration problems Once your headache clinician has identified the cause of your headache and migraines, treatment can then be targeted to treat the underlying causes. Once the cause is targeted and treated, you will expect a reduction or resolution to your headaches and migraines, as well as cognitive issues associated with your condition. Have you had your headaches and migraines assessed and treated by an expert headache clinician? If not, contact us today.

STYLING with Moana Robinson Movie star red As a lover of the colour red, Kay wore Arbonne’s Hibiscus lipstick; a great red for cool skin tones. Kay found Arbonne’s Nude Mineral Powder, matt finish, easy to use. An application of Arbonne’s irritationfree mascara made a huge difference. We softened Kay’s hairstyle with an off-centre parting and a feathery fringe.
Princess for a day Kay Thorne
before
As owner of Myla Graphics in Darra and a chocolate party planner, businesswoman Kay Thorne usually does not have much time for clothes shopping. So a Style Makeover and shopping day with Moana Robinson turned out to be “so much fun” for Kay!
Colour and proportions
Work or weekend
Kay described her wardrobe as “Like Santa’s wardrobe – a lot of the same”. She often wears black as light colours are not practical in her work. She suits vibrant, bright colours and has a high contrast with her hair, skin tone and eyes. Because Kay has a short torso and longer legs she suits longer blouses. Kay has discovered scarves as an easy accessory to add a pop of colour to her black work clothes. Wearing an elongated thin scarf is more flattering for her short torso and sloping shoulders than a bulky scarf.
Kay usually wears the same style of clothing all week long. We suggested some smart casual clothes for the weekend. David Jones at Garden City was a great start, producing a longline blouse – the perfect length with a flattering high contrast black and white print. Kay said that it was “wonderful to have someone choose garments” for her to try on. Black wedges shoes were a smart and comfortable option and a change from the usual flat shoes. Add clip-on silver earrings and a scarf, and this outfit is complete.
Kay said the makeover had made a difference. “I have been complimented on my smile a lot, so looking good makes you smile and that makes you look better as well.” Moana Robinson, Styled for Life bstyledforlife.com.au

Time to celebrate our achievements WITH THE YEAR 2016 DRAWING TO A CLOSE, schools on the Southside have achieved a great deal! It is time to take stock of what has been achieved by our schools and to celebrate the fruits of their hard work. This year, we’ve seen students achieving personal excellence in sports, such as Andrew Berry of Calvary Christian College, and in Academics such as Jerry Li and Stefan Radosavljevic at Shailer Park SHS. And collectively students in Bethania Lutheran School, Sunnybank SHS and Calamvale Community College are helping to put their school on the top of education excellence. At the school level, we’ve seen Sheldon College launching state of the art learning
facilities and providing cutting edge curriculum to take students into the 21 century education, and we have St Laurence’s College building a sustainable community with a well-established urban farm on Campus. As parents and a community we are lucky to have so many dedicated education leaders and staff who put their heart and soul into helping the next generation develop into the best they can be. In this edition we present you with some of the best schools we have on the Southside and what they have achieved in 2016.
Sheldon College gives students control of their own career WHETHER they’re in the cockpit of a Cessna 172, calling the shots from the Chairman’s seat in the Boardroom or at the control panel of the most state-of-the-art multi-media centre in the Southern Hemisphere, Sheldon College students are always a step ahead of the game. Founded in 1997 by internationally acclaimed educator Dr Lyn Bishop, Sheldon College is spread over 56 acres of manicured gardens and the latest jewel in its crown, the $15M LINQ Precinct has further cemented the College’s relationship with Microsoft and Google.
The LINQ Precinct houses state-of-the-art facilities for students of business, design, technology and creative industries, and includes robotics, engineering and computer-aided design labs as well as an industry standard Film and TV studio and accompanying editing suites. Add to that, the Australian first partnership Sheldon signed this year with Australian Wings Academy that ensures students can step from the classroom into the cockpit and it’s clear to see Sheldon College is at the cutting edge of 21st century education. hievements Student breaks 20 year record CALVARY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE’S School Captain, Andrew Berry, has achieved outstanding High Jump success this year. The 17-year-old broke the regional record, jumping 2.06 m earlier this year. His success continued in August when competing against schools of the Pacific District. Andrew achieved a staggering height of 2.10 m, breaking the District’s 20-year record and ranking him second in Australia. Andrew has qualified for the Queensland School Sport State Championships this year, and will then go on to compete in Athletics Australia Junior Nationals in 2017.
With a strong background in sports, Andrew also holds the College’s Triple Jump and Long Jump record. Andrew’s affinity for sports stems beyond athletics, with titles including: Regional Football (soccer) Representative, Australasian Futsal team player, and State Track and Field Representative. The future looks bright for the young sports star, whose goal is to make the 2017 Australian World Junior Athletics Team and to obtain a Division 1 NCAA scholarship. Andrew has proudly represented the College, with his success a true testament to dedication and hard work.
Achieving a sustainable community IN 2016 ST LAURENCE’S COLLEGE has accomplished a great deal. The College has thrived with a well-established urban farm flourishing on the school campus. Students and teachers have diligently worked together to develop a piece of unproductive wasteland into an abundant area with aquaponic and hydroponic vegetables, laying chickens, a worm farm and many fish. Students have continued to obtain excellent academic results throughout the year, which will provide a great foundation for their future aspirations and the contribution they make to society. St Laurence’s College has also
achieved outstanding results in many sporting endeavours with students demonstrating good sportsmanship for their game and their fellow man. During the year St Laurence’s College has participated in a number of local, national and international immersions where students have worked with communities to construct buildings, assist elderly and homeless, donate to charities and help out wherever required. These College achievements highlight the work St Laurence’s College does in many communities that brings people together for the better good.

Beating exam stress Parents play an important role in helping students thrive during exam time
E
xams are a part of life. Yet for many, they represent sleepless nights in preparation, stressful days and high anxiety levels while awaiting the results. These kinds of feelings are not unusual, with experts agreeing that the vast majority of students who sit for exams experience a level of stress. Lucie Russell from UK-based YoungMinds explains that more than a third of calls to the YoungMinds Parents Helpline each year relate to exam stress. “Every year we get calls from parents asking for advice on how to help their children cope with exams. Increasing pressure and stress will have an adverse effect on many young people, which can lead to mental health problems including self-harm, eating disorders and depression. For a child who has problems in other areas of their life, such as a family breakdown or friendship issues, exams can be the ‘last straw’.” Signs that your child may be overly stressed about exams could include lack of appetite, inability to sleep, increased irritability and feelings of depression. According to Queensland and Northern Territory telephone counselling service, Parentline, there are many ways parents can help their children cope with exam stress:
Six ways parents can help with exam stress • Encourage healthy eating and regular sleep during exam periods. • Encourage your child to relax before they go to bed after concentrating for long periods of time e.g. reading a short story. • Remind them to go out for a walk or run, or to do some other exercise they enjoy. • Teach them relaxation techniques such as listening to gentle music. • Help your child develop a positive mindset by encouraging them to visualise success. • Assist them to see the bright side, to laugh at themselves and to appreciate the positives in life.
Above all else, it is important to encourage children to recognise that life will go on after exams are finished. Reassure them that, as parents, you will be there for them regardless of the outcome. Parentline 1300 30 1300

New training academy for Dental Assistants
A
new national Registered Training Organisation (RTO) has officially launched on Brisbane Southside. The Australian Academy of Dental Assisting is an innovative concept designed to deliver hands-on, practical training to people interested in becoming dental assistants. Business founder and entrepreneur, Natasha Hobson, who also owns Alita Dental in Springwood, established the academy in response to a need for more practical training for prospective dental assistants. “I’ve been in the dental industry for around twenty years,” said Natasha, “and I hadn’t encountered an RTO that offered the kind of training and experience to students that I knew would be of the most value. Unfortunately, what was happening is that students were being sold a training package that focussed entirely on theoretical learning for six to twelve months but only incorporated three weeks in a dental practice. Three weeks placement is simply not

long enough to learn to be an effective dental assistant.” Tired of the alternatives, Natasha put together a different concept. Her students will still complete the appropriate theoretical modules but will be placed in a host dental practice three days per week for the duration of their study. “Basically, I feel that everyone wins with this model,” explains Natasha. “The student wins with the same time investment as other courses but gain the real skills while working on real patients with real dentists; the dental practices win with what is effectively a free, fully indemnified team member three days per week in exchange for training them; and the industry wins with a better skilled pool of qualified applicants.” “I was very lucky in the team I put together,” Natasha went on to say. “My national manager
Mick de Brenni and Natasha Hobson
Fiona Porritt has fifteen years experience working in the management of dental assisting traineeships, and my state manager Nicole Drews has a wealth of industry experience accumulated over the last thirty years.” A recent launch breakfast was very well attended with dignitaries such as Mayor Luke
Smith, Councillors Laurie Koranski and Steve Swenson, Federal MP Dr Jim Chalmers and State MP Mick de Brenni. All spoke very highly of this initiative and its founders. There is no doubt that the passion, drive and dedication of the team at The Australian Academy of Dental Assisting will see this business take its place in the national spotlight. All About Detailing sets the bar
T
he hard work and determination to create a car detailing business that would stand out from the crowd began when a business where Sharley had been detailing for some time, and her fiancĂŠ was head mechanic, closed down. Before then having their own shop was just a dream. Disheartened, Sharley called Tavis, the senior detailer at a popular detailing studio, who was over-worked and felt stuck. They met and the vision for All About Detailing unfolded, with the goal to grow and become a well-known go-to for people who love their cars.
It wasn’t long before Sharley and Tavis were well-recognised members of the Southside community, with thousands of followers. Within three months they had moved into their first shop and then within a month they upgraded to the much larger studio in Loganholme where they now operate.
Genuine care and passion for vehicles
Not everything was smooth sailing. Sharley soon learnt how hard it was to be a woman shining in a male-dominated industry. Tavis was known for his skills in the industry and it wasn’t long before the team experienced some tough competition. Every hiccup, though, lit a new fire to their passion, and now the duo aspires to encourage others in the community to start their own business too. “You can achieve anything you put your mind and heart to, says Sharley.
Sharley and Tavis believed that showing great enthusiasm and genuinely caring about people’s vehicles would help them build their dream business model. The high attention to detail and the duo’s passion helped them to grow rapidly. Their work soon caught the attention of many luxury car owners, with some customers travelling from other states to receive their services.

Local author shaves head for cancer
Transform your golf
at book launch
Michelle Heynen author of new memoir Reflections of Sandra has decided to dedicate her book launch this month to the Cancer Council of Australia and will be shaving her head, live on Facebook.
Challenge the dynamics of your golf swing Whether you’re a weekend hacker or an elite golfer, a major source of frustration is inconsistency in your game. “IF you’ve just finished another disappointing round, it’s time to look Vern at what’s challenging Johnson your swing,” says Vern Johnson, inventor of the OnsongSwing ® golf training aid. When we focus on a particular action or swing thought, our brain automatically slows our swing down to exert the required control. Some golf instructors call this the ‘flinch’. Vern suggests that, before changing any aspect of technique, question the dynamics of your swing. “On the course, our practice swings are relaxed with great follow through. However, the follow through in our real swing at the ball is often
sabotaged by thinking too much. You can add great follow through to your ball striking by just letting the ball get in the way of a practice swing. It might sound too simple, but it’s worth giving it a go next time you’re at the range or even on the course.” The OnsongSwing can help you by graphing the strength of your follow through in practice swings and ball striking. It will transform your golf!
Michelle struggled with depression for three years after her mother’s death from cancer. She began journaling her grief, including her eventually “rising up out of the ashes” to discover the gift in her experience. A passion for writing was unleashed and the result is her “touching” and “uplifting” book, through which Michelle hopes to assist others through the cancer and grief journey. Donations for the fundraiser can be made via www.michelleheynen.com Book Launch When: November 19 5.30 pm Where: InHouse Publishing, 4/184 Kingston Road, Underwood. Bookings: mheynen79@gmail.com.

Forza Horizon 3
Tangalooma Island Resort
Race around a digital Australia THE GOLD COAST, Outback Australia and northern NSW are places that haven’t been very highly represented in pop-culture, and even less so in video games. So I was excited to hear that the latest Forza Horizon game was being set in these Australian locations.

t’s no secret that the Champagne Travellers love the ocean, so we headed o to explore Tangalooma Island Resort located across from Moreton Bay, o the coast of Brisbane. On arrival we were greeted by friendly sta and taken to our villa, which was situated a short stroll from the beachfront.

Spectacular sun, sand and water With crystal clear waters beckoning, we headed down to the water-sports shed to gear up for one of our favourite passions – snorkelling. We grabbed our snorkel equipment and GoPros, boarded the boat and headed out to the wrecks. This was a highlight for us as we were able to swim alongside a spectacular array of reef fish and a friendly turtle; we also had a bit of speed fun using the resort’s sea scooter. It was hard, but we finally dragged ourselves out of the water to check out one of the resort’s many land-based activities. Climbing aboard the Desert Safari Tour 4WD, we cruised up to some sand dunes where we indulged in toboggan rivalry to see which one of us was the fastest to the bottom. On our return, we relaxed a little before heading down to the jetty to handfeed the wild Bottlenose dolphins as they cruised in at sunset to snatch a fish or two from the many willing holiday-makers. The next morning, at 4am (yes, photographers ARE crazy!) we took the 4WD across the island

to the eastern side where, unsurprisingly, we had the beach to ourselves. The spectacular sunrise made the early start well worthwhile. Back at the resort, after a quick breakfast, we jumped onto quad bikes to take a scenic trail ride that included breathtaking views of the coastline.
Natural beauty Tangalooma’s promise After lunch, we took advantage of some available kayaks and paddled along the resort waterfront and around the wrecks, spotting a couple of dolphins and the odd curious turtle that popped its head out of the water. Nature, peace and friends. At the end of our last day, we wandered down to the beach with our champagne to relax and reminisce about our adventures while watching Mother Nature paint the sunset. Ever wanted to visit Byron Bay in a Ferrari? Forza Horizon 3 is an open-world simulation racing game where you drive around a digital Australia to race exotic cars, complete insane stunts and enjoy the gorgeously realised Australian landscape. The game looks fantastic and features a huge number of real-world locations and landmarks. The game world isn’t a 1:1 representation of Australia and some landmarks aren’t where they should be (I’m pretty sure the Twelve Apostles aren’t located off the coast of Byron Bay), but the developers have taken a great deal of care to replicate details that are uniquely Australian. Little things like wheelie-bins with yellow lids, red Australia Post boxes and realisticlooking gum trees make the game world feel fantastically familiar. The Forza series has always had plenty of car customisation options and extremely fun racing mechanics, with difficulty levels that range from
