BUPA DENTAL IS HERE! Leveraging its wealth of experience in providing quality health care services, Bupa is opening its first branded dental clinic in Queensland. Bupa passionately believes they can make a real difference to the lives of Australians through how they deliver personalised local health care. Their wealth of expertise and resources in delivering quality aged care, health services, health insurance, optical services and dental care is being extended further with an exceptional new layer to Bupa’s dental offering, Bupa Dental.

Service for all local residents

2

Bupa Dental is Bupa’s own brand of dental clinic, and its staff and management are excited about launching Queensland’s first branch in the specially chosen location of Westfield Garden City. Being well aware of the need for Brisbane Southside residents to have access to market-leading dental services, at great value and in a convenient location, Bupa felt the Upper Mt Gravatt location is perfect. While all Bupa practices are part of Bupa’s Member’s First network, meaning health insurance customers get exceptional value, along with the promise of superior quality care, Bupa Dental clinics are designed to deliver a modern and comfortable service to all local residents, not just Bupa members, regardless of patients’ health insurance arrangements. The new Bupa Dental clinic is led by Drs Andrew Molloy, Roslyn Dick, Greg Thomas,

Robert Freeman and Nathan Barnes, all long-term local residents who also work out of the Rochedale Dental Group clinic.

Local response to national dental health issues The Upper Mt Gravatt team are committed to not just treat dental problems but teach prevention and correct hygiene practices as part of a national strategy by Bupa to address the growing dental crisis in Australia. Three million work and study hours are being lost every year nationwide due to poor dental health. The total direct costs and lost productivity amount to $2 billon nationally. Of great concern is the fact that 50% of Australian children today suffer from tooth decay and 68% of 2–5 year olds have never visited a dentist. Bupa Dental clinics, which have opened this year in Hobart, Adelaide and Sydney, with many more planned for early 2016, are addressing the dental issues of Australians of all ages and putting preventative measures in place for very real problems like tooth decay, gum disease, dry mouth, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) and sleep apnoea. Bupa Dental is dedicated to helping Southside residents live longer, healthier, happier lives through improved dental health and invite you to pop into their new clinic to discuss your dental needs today!

The Handmade Revolution Uncovering the reasons behind the social, cultural and economic shift away from mass production f you can wear it, eat it or recline upon it, it is almost guaranteed that someone, somewhere has made it by hand. A week-end stroll through one of the hundreds of suburban markets that have popped up across Australia not only showcases a plethora of handmade goods, it allows buyers the opportunity to speak to makers face to face about their products, the materials used, where they were sourced and the reason behind the maker’s passion for their craft.

I

Connecting with the product This kind of buying is about as far removed from the purchase of mass-produced items as you could get, yet the trend towards buying handmade is a global one. This year Australians will spend over $8 billion on Christmas presents, but each year it seems handmade products are receiving a larger piece of the pie. Small scale industries such as furniture

Bestowed current collection

making, woodworking and leatherwork have experienced double and triple digit growth in many cities in what has been referred to as the ‘Makers Movement’. Why is our generation so enamoured with handmade? There seems to be a profound cultural shift at work. Rather than buying from an anonymous maker, we are seeking a connection not only with the item we purchase but also the creator. “I enjoy buying clothing and jewellery that you can’t buy anywhere else, that no one else will have or wear,” says Karen Clayton, a regular patron of markets throughout Brisbane. “I like that before you buy the product you can feel it and touch it and gauge the quality.” In perfect harmony with the rise of individualism, buying direct from a maker means that buyers can have a say in how their items are made and select the colour, the fabric or the style which is unique to them.

4

LO G A N LOYALTY

CLUB

Shopping with a conscience Buying handmade often goes hand in hand with buying ethically, locally and sustainably. Fashion labels ‘Rant’ and ‘Bestowed’, who operate from a suburban Brisbane home studio, design and produce quality clothing made from natural fibres milled in Australia. All production takes place within a 30 kilometre range of the studio, which minimises their carbon footprint further. The popularity of local clothing makers lies in their guarantee to customers that their clothes are not made in sweat shops and that their materials are locally sourced. Unlike mass producers, it seems that artisans frequently pay painstaking attention to sourcing the purest ingredients and components as they focus on the quality of their products rather than the overall quantity.

Creative beings The return to handmade captures the innate desire we all have to create, and there is nowhere

this is better displayed than at the World Maker Faires, founded by Dale Dougherty in 2006. The Faires, which are held globally, provide an opportunity for local makers to ‘show off’ their wares, and participants range from artists and cooks to gardeners and engineers. Dale describes the Faires as “a celebration of making in our culture,” which has, he believes, the potential to change the world. “If we can see ourselves as creative, empowered and able to do things then you end up changing your own life, and that changes other people’s lives, and that changes the world around us.  Page 6

The Suburban Saddler Troy Porter brings his unique leather work skills to Aitken’s Saddlery

hen it comes to working with leather, there is nothing that saddler Troy Porter cannot do. Troy began learning the craft of saddle making thirtyfive years ago with Syd Hill and Sons, but his connection with leather began earlier still, during a childhood spent surrounded by cattle and horses on a Brisbane dairy farm.

W

Unique leather designs Troy joined Aitkens Saddlery at Loganholme as a saddler earlier this year and is now excited to also feature his leather gift line in-store, which has confirmed his title of ‘artisan’. The range

Leather Travel Bag $350

features a beautiful selection of unique lifestyle and homewares products, which are personally designed and handmade by Troy using leather supplied by East Coast Leather. The popular line includes Hurricane Lamp Holders, Travel Kits, Wine Slings and Belts. Each item is a triumph in workmanship and quality that one can expect from a true artisan and a reputable saddlery like Aitken’s. As the Christmas season approaches, the range’s Tripod Stools and Canteens are proving the most popular. Troy describes the Tripod Stools as ideal for camping trips or attending horse events, and he is proud to say that he makes all facets of the product including the timber base. The Canteens are also very practical as they attach to the waist and include a cup. Apart from saddle making and developing his own gift line, Troy’s journey with leather has also seen him venture into making leather movie props, most recently for the latest instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Quality leather repair service Aitken’s Saddlery owner, Jan Aitken, said the company feels very fortunate to have brought Troy on board. She explained that quality saddlery skills are hard to come by these day and

with Troy’s skills, Aitken’s can now w offer quality leather repairs to their customers. “Saddlery is a dying art form. Troy is such a coup p for us as now our services for our customers extend to repairing any leather work, such as hockey boots and guitar straps – by an expert,” says Jan. Fortunately for Aitken’s Saddlery, Troy loves working with leather because “it is a natural product and therefore gives a beautiful finish.” He added, “Good quality leather products should last a lifetime with a little bit of care.”

This idea of a renaissance, of people participating in creating things, is a time people perhaps will look back upon and say, ‘Look what flourished during this period’. The days of large factories making millions of things that are uniform and the same for everybody is going to look really stupid.” The handmade revolution does not just involve buying handmade but getting our own hands dirty. Classes in traditional skills such as lead-lighting, wood carving and felting are experiencing a resurgence. Valerie Pearson from Green Living Australia in Underwood runs classes in the traditional arts of cheese making, home preserving and cosmetic and soap making, which she describes as “tremendously popular”. Her workshops are regularly booked out and Valerie attributes this to the inherent need people have to be able to do for themselves. “Being self-sufficient to any degree helps us feel competent, which is very rewarding and I would say even necessary for mental wellbeing,” Valerie explains.

Perhaps paradoxically, the nostalgic flavour of the handmade movement is fuelled by the profound influence of modern technology. Thousands of crafting blogs, tutorials and websites inspire and encourage artisans, and the rise of online international marketplace Etsy enables crafters to have their own shop and sell directly to buyers. More than 1.4 million active sellers and 20.8 million active buyers are participating in Etsy today. The online world enables artisans to bond through their common interests just as groups gathered in knitting or sewing circles in days gone by. Etsy CEO and Chairman Chad Dickerson explains. “In an age where drones, self-driving cars and virtual reality headsets are threatening to erase every opportunity to interact with another person, we are celebrating the personal bonds forged by our community. Etsy is a collaborative endeavour that is nourished by the connections between everyone in our ecosystem.” Whether handmade goods are sold online or at the weekend markets, there can be no denying this is a potentially world-changing trend. “People

SKIN HEALTH with Claire Mason

Skin Rejuvenation Over time our skin starts getting irregularities on its surface due the sun, skin disorders and ageing. These are usually not harmful to our health but aesthetically aren’t great. Skin rejuvenation is a way to revive the skin and make it new. Procedure Skin rejuvenation treats textural irregularities like scars, wrinkles and acne as well as aesthetical irregularities like dark spots and freckles. Usually performed by a skin practitioner, the procedure doesn’t require patients to stay overnight at the clinic. It may treat small, specific areas or the whole facial area. For specific areas, the doctor will first use a local anesthetic, and for the whole face a general anesthesia will be used. The procedure lasts from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the amount of area being treated. Post-care After the procedure, the doctor is going to treat the area and instruct the patient how to continue at-home care. This involves the area being cleaned four to five times a day and applying petroleum jelly to prevent scabs forming. Swelling is natural but steroids may be

prescribed. Using an extra pillow at night may also ease swelling. Itching is natural for 12 to 72 hours and, depending on the treated area, healing can take 10 to 21 days. It’s important to moisture the new skin during the healing period. For many, the skin turns a little lighter afterwards, so simply apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin while waiting for the tone to become regular again. The rejuvenated skin is going to be very sensitive at first and should be treated with extreme care for the healing period, otherwise treatment may have to be repeated, and there is the risk of burns, scarring and bacterial infections occurring.

stem. During the first day of the cycle, there is a normal drop in oestrogen levels. For those with a hypersensitive brainstem, the body thinks there is an abnormal drop in oestrogen levels when there really isn’t. As a result the body reacts adversely by creating migraine type pain. Treating the cause vs symptoms The safest approach is to now treat the cause of the problem, rather than trying to manipulate your hormonal levels in the body. Fortunately, treatment continues to advance and there are now safe options to treat a hypersensitive brainstem. Even better, you don’t need medication or surgical intervention to finally stop menstrual migraines. To find out more, contact the team at The Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic. We love talking about headaches and migraines.

Unsafe treatment If this sounds familiar you may have tried suppressing or heightening certain hormones in the body, tried the contraceptive implants or skipping the sugar pills, or even ingesting large doses of medication during that time of the month. These measures are not regarded as the safest or healthiest way when dealing with menstrual migraines.

Latest research New research and studies have found that hormones are not to blame for the monthly menstrual migraines. Studies comparing normal healthy females versus females with menstrual migraines show that both groups have the same hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. What is the cause? Studies show the brainstem is the cause of the problem. Menstrual migraineurs all have one thing in common, that is, a hypersensitive brain-

The Drive to Success Cabs 2000 awarded Taxi Operator of the Year by Taxi Council Queensland

ogan based company, Cabs 2000 Pty Ltd, owned and operated by Shane Holley, took out the Taxi Operator of the Year Award from Taxi Council Queensland – their ďŹ rst award – proving that with hard work and a love of what you do, you can achieve anything. Shane hasn’t always been a business go-getter. He began life in Logan and was raised by parents who often struggled to make enough money to pay the rent. Through his relationship with his grandparents, in particular his grandfather who taught him the value of money and the beneďŹ ts of earning and saving, Shane began to work hard to make them proud. “Work hard and achieve anything you want was my grandfather’s motto. He worked hard and he taught me these valuable life lessons,â€? says Shane. At ďŹ fteen Shane’s grandfather tragically passed away and, being such an inuential person in Shane’s life, this left a noticeable hole as he began to struggle with school and lost his focus. “I struggled to keep my head up and after I barely ďŹ nished school I started working three jobs to get ahead. But nothing inspired me,â€? says Shane “I knew what I had to do and I had to remember those life values my grandfather

taught me and get back on track. So I started night school to better my OP then continued on to uni.

L

Passion for the business Once at university Shane sought out a part-time job with a taxi company and he instantly fell in love with the business. “I could feel the prospects of making a future in this business and knew that’s what I needed to do. So I quit uni and started working full time. “I’ve been very fortunate that I got my first car a year later and then in 2010 we took over Cabs 2000 in Slacks Creek and then another depot in 2013. Along with these, we also took over a panel shop and brought a mechanic onboard, he says. Shane says that his love for his job and taking opportunities as they arise was essential to his success. “Cabs 2000 are all about being and continuing to be involved with one of the world’s best taxi companies through their

Diggers Services Club grants 32 wishes opeful excitement permeated Diggers Services Club in November as representatives of local organisations gathered to hear if their Community Grant applications had been accepted. Every year generous Diggers Services Club awards grants to assist valued community organisations domiciled within Logan City. Board Member Alan Ploenges said the grants are the club’s way to help those in the community helping others in need. “We are here today to honour you and assist you to carry on your good work to help those who cannot do it for themselves,” said Alan. $60 000 in total was shared amongst 32 different organisations. Gail Harrower from craft group Mission Possible said this year’s grant money would be used to purchase more quilting materials and to service machines so the group can continue to create quilts and care packages for Camp Quality, nursing homes and hospitals. “Without the support of Diggers Services Club we just could not do what we do. We are so grateful,” said Ms Harrower. Founder of Lighthouse Care, Debbie Hill, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the club’s fi nancial support for Lighthouse’s work to provide shopping trolleys of food to low socio-economic and disadvantaged community members for only $25. “Thank you, Diggers Services Club, for supporting our dream,” said Ms Hill. Mrs Pamela Shelton-Orchard concluded the event with sharing her deep appreciation for Logan and its caring community, particularly all present at the event.

EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING Access Community Services is one of Australia’s leaders in settlement, employment, training, youth services, housing and social enterprise. As such a percentage of our staff are migrants, refugees and volunteers, as well as student placements in order to assist in training them in the hospitality industry.

l h This real-world experience creates employment pathways, builds people’s skills and gives them the confidence needed to progress in the industry.

THE SPICE EXCHANGE Our café is also a platform where we can showcase our social enterprise program, The Spice Exchange. The program sees women from migrant and refugee backgrounds coming together to share different culture and recipes, as well as to make friends and build confidence. They make spices and condiments based off their traditional recipes, which are then used in our café cuisine, as well as sold on the premises, with all proceeds going back into the business – see www.spiceexchange.com.au for details. As of January, we will be providing a free coffee for members of the QLD Police and will also be hosting a Spice Fiesta to further highlight our Spice Exchange Program, so like our facebook page to stay tuned! Q&A Love and intimacy guidance Q: Any guidance on love would be appreciated, please xx – Melissa The card I pulled for you is ‘intimacy’... one of my favourite topics! This is about allowing yourself to be vulnerable with your partner, sharing your full emotions, your playful side and setting some time aside to do this with no distractions. It is not about sharing your worries and concerns but more your deepest desires and intimate truths. I want to share my free ‘get more intimacy exercise’ with you, which is a powerful 2-hour exercise you can do with your partner to explore intimacy and touch.

Psychic and tarot insights

Q: I feel really confused at the moment from disappointments etc. Some guidance would be so appreciated. Thank you in advance. – Paula

Q: Can you tell me how it will go when I move in with my partner? Thank you. – Anna I feel it will go well and I see a marriage proposal as part of it! Cheers

It may sound corny, but I feel an inner look will help you solve the problems and let-downs. Sometimes we expect more than the other can give. It’s not your fault. This will allow you to start seeing it with better eyes. It will clear up in a few weeks then in the new year you will really fly.

As the year winds down I thought it a good time to reflect on the events the Logan Chamber of Commerce held in 2015 and highlight a few things to note for 2016.

7am Club Each week we had our 7 am Club. I would like to thank Springwood High School for catering for that breakfast. During school holidays, the Club moves to Coffee Club Springwood, and many thanks to Barry and the crew for being excellent hosts. 7am Club is proving to be a great networking opportunity and will continue in 2016.

Chamber Breakfast During the second week of each month we conducted our main breakfast meeting at different venues to support our corporate members. This breakfast is a great opportunity to meet new people and listen to an interesting speaker. This is an open breakfast and all are welcome to take part in another great networking opportunity.

Ladies Luncheon & BAD nights We also conduct a Business Ladies Luncheon and BAD (Business After Dark) nights. BAD nights are held at a member’s business premises and gives the owner a chance to increase his database. The visitor can network with potential new customers and learn about the business.

Business Distinction Awards Our signature event for the year was our Business Distinction Awards held in July with some 80 expressions of interest and 40 applications for 15 different categories. The event was a great success and will be held again next year with nominations being taken now.

IT Digital Expo Next year we will be holding an IT Digital Expo on March 20th after our March breakfast. With speakers and exhibitors this will be a good opportunity to check out the latest computers, phone systems and tablets. Make a note in your diary and keep an eye out for more announcements. The Chamber office is situated in Vanessa Blvd, Springwood and we invite members to make use of it for workshops, seminars etc. Cost is what you deem it to be worth. We would like to develop the premises into a business hub with all the services available. I would like to thank everybody who has been associated with the Chamber and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very profitable New Year. John Paul College students are confident, connected and collaborative and in 2015, we celebrated another outstanding, challenging and incredibly rewarding year.

Celebrating our Academic Success

Celebrating our Unity

In our academic pursuits, energy was high and our learning creative, collaborative and engaged. Over 500 students were honoured for academic excellence at our mid-year and end-of-year celebrations. Our NAPLAN results continued to validate the outstanding teaching and learning taking place in our classrooms as we achieved above bove State and National averages across all fields and year lev levels.

In our school, everyone has the right to be included and respected. Our young people from many different ethnic and faith backgrounds openly celebrated our cultural diversity with mutual respect and acceptance. We lived and breathed Unity on campus as we came together for a number of events in honour of harmony and humanity. Our student-led Unity Council and parent-driven Unity Club continued their great work in promoting cultural understanding through a series of events for parents and students alike.

Celebrating our Leading Edge Technology Anywhere, anytime, any device! Year round, our virtual cloud environment supports our students as they safely and securely access leading edge applications and services on their chosen device from any location, any time of the day. This information and communication solution means that our students have the best opportunities to transition seamlessly into leading roles in the workplace.

Celebrating our Success in the Performing Arts The creative energy and talent of over 1,000 performing arts students shone brightly in a busy year across 40 cultural activities. Our musicians, dancers, actors, singers, circus and cheer teams dominated regional, state and national competitions and Eisteddfods. They entertained audiences at the College, across our community, interstate and on the international stage. Our performers now turn their attention to 2016 and the College’s major musical production of The Wiz, coming in July 2016.

Celebrating our Community

Celebrating our Boarding Village

We collaborated and connected to support a range of charities and causes. We walked, we ran, we stampeded, we selfied, we dressed up, we packaged up and we stayed up – and raised thousands of dollars in the process for those in need. Internationally, to outback Australia and within our own community, we helped make a difference to people everywhere!

We recorded some big milestones in 2015 as we welcomed our first boarders into the JPC family. This rich and rewarding educational experience enabled our inaugural boarders to develop maturity, independence, self-confidence and resilience within a safe and caring family environment. They enjoyed a great first year in our village style accommodation nestled in native bushland and contributed much to our College and co-curricular life.

Celebrating our Sporting Success Our tenacious athletes were a force to be reckoned with on the playing fields, courts and in the pool. They gave their all for the Burgundy and Blue across a range of school and club-based sports. Our teams commenced their TAS fixtures with enthusiasm and school spirit, finishing the year by claiming 23 premierships across six sports. Our Primary teams produced equally impressive results, bringing home the JTAS Champions Trophy for Cross Country and winning the JTAS Swimming Carnival for the second consecutive tive year. We also congratulated the 58 athletes who competed proudly for Queensland athlete and Australia.

We’re proud of each and every one of the 2000 students who are part of the John Paul College Family as they continue to make the world a better and more peaceful place. From our family to yours our very best wishes for a safe and Merry Christmas.

SKILLS AND TRAINING with Jenelle Bartlett needs, and not stressing about your studies. Compartmentalise your mind so that you improve your productivity. Make sure your kids know Mum’s study time is ‘no interruption time’.

Juggling motherhood and study

Have realistic expectations Be realistic about what you can achieve. Robyn Pacey who is a trainer at Alan Bartlett Consulting suggests that you focus on one unit at a time so that your study commitments are manageable. If you have an assessment due in six weeks and you know that, as hard as you will try, you would need an additional week to complete the required task, rather than saying to your trainer or supervisor that you cannot meet the deadline, be proactive and re-negotiate a new deadline – one that you know you can meet.

Studying while being a mum is possible with a few good strategies hoosing to study, whether it is to simply refresh your work skills, prepare yourself for a new career or for pure enjoyment, is a major commitment. Throw motherhood into the mix and most would throw their hands in the air in defeat. If you are a mother at home with children, it is hard to imagine fitting anything else into your day. However, it is possible to juggle motherhood and study.

C

Organisation is key Have a plan in place on how you are going to fit it all in. Create a schedule for everything that needs to occur in your week including study for exams and assignment work, laundry, exercise, cooking and so on. Bear in mind that you will not always be able to stick to your plan, so you will also need to develop contingencies for when things go wrong. Try using Google Calendar or a diary and block off times for different activities.

Don’t try to do it all You will have to make some sacrifices, so cut yourself some slack. Accept offers of assistance with babysitting; don’t worry if your home won’t pass the white-glove inspection; and don’t expect yourself to whip up gourmet dinners every night (or even any night).

Grab study minutes Instead of waiting for the 2 hour study session you have planned when the kids are asleep in bed, grab any spare minutes you can find throughout the day. Have your course material available to read when you are waiting for the kids outside the school gates; and even whilst dinner is cooking on the stove. These few minutes here and there spent studying may add up to a whole hour that you don’t have to find at the end of the week. Kerry Cleghorn is a mother of three

and grandmother of five who is currently studying Interior Decoration at Alan Bartlett Consulting. Kerry downloads information to her phone and tablet so that she can access her learning materials. “Keeping my study notes on my mobile devices means I can read through the information whenever I have some spare time,” says Kerry.

Focus your mind Make a commitment to yourself that when you are studying, you are concentrating 100% on the task at hand. Similarly, when spending time with your children, you are paying attention to them and their

Festive season sparkles Gold / Nudes

Learn from Santa How to have fun without the January regret very year, as a health and lifestyle coach, I live in hope that Santa will lose some weight, for the sake of his health. But unfortunately he is stuck in the same unhealthy lifestyle and work habits that keep that excess abdominal fat there. For many of us, the end of the year represents a change in our routines and our normal life, which can lead to additional kilos and centimetres. If you want to start the New Year differently and not looking like Santa, here are some tips to surviving the Christmas period.

E

Don’ts •

Avoid those late night snacks of cookies and milk.

•

Don’t overeat but savour and enjoy your meals.

•

Don’t overindulge on sugary treats and cakes.

•

Don’t set up impossible tasks to do everything in one night

•

Don’t try to buy everyone in the world a present. Some people prefer quality time, an act of

service, or some thoughtful, beautiful words on a card.

Do’s •

Drink water even if your hands are full with presents.

•

Get sleep to help reduce your stress levels, instead of all-nighters and deadlines.

•

Spend quality time rather than visiting every house in the world.

•

Spend time looking after yourself instead of the needs of everyone else.

•

Continue to exercise, walk and move (rather than flying to every housetop).

As the busy festival season creeps closer, it’s time to prepare your wardrobe for events ďŹ lled with bubbles, glamour and cheer. This year I am suggesting some bling. That’s right ladies – sparkles and sequins. Don’t be shy. Be on the look-out for trending colours like your golds/nudes and silver/greys. Here are my ideas for Golds and Nudes. Most importantly, have fun even if this means, like good’ ol Santa, laughing at the top of your voice in the middle of the night and waking the neighbours! Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
