The Evolution of Social Media
I
f you take a look back just a few decades, you can see how much social media and its offerings have evolved. From the very first form of communicating (hand written letters) to the invention of the telegraph, then the internet, to the interactive online platforms of today, social media really has come a long way - now offering us more features than ever before. If you look at the definition of ‘social media’ today, it encompasses websites and applications that allow us to create or share content or to participate in social networking. But it hasn’t always been that way, depending on the technology available at the time, its definition changes and develops. Take a look at social media before the 1900s, for example.
Social Media before the 1900s The social media platforms that existed before the 1900s would almost definitely be seen as primitive in this day and age. Methods of communicating
across long distances included hand written letters, right up until 1792 when the telegraph was invented. Unlike handwritten letters which were a more heartfelt and personal way of communicating, the telegraph allowed short and sharp messages to be sent and delivered over a longer distance via an electric signal across a wire, to a receiver at the other end. Seeing the potential in faster communications and the ability to tap into new technologies, other companies jumped on the bandwagon to try and improve the communication tool. Some would say the rapid expansion of social media and technology was inevitable from here. Fast forward a decade to the discovery of the telephone and radio. Although still in use today, telephone lines and radio signals enabled people to communicate across great distances instantaneously – something the world had never seen before.
As a result, communication reach broadened and the world became smaller and easily accessible for everyone. Although this was an incredible feat at the time, some would argue that it was also the downfall of social interaction and relationships. No longer did we have to use our social skills to communicate face to face or write out hand written letters to our loved ones any more. Experts continue to argue about this today, with social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat creating a barrier between face to face interaction and communication – it just goes to show that history does repeat itself.
The 20th century Technology really began to take off in the 20th Century, with the creation of super computers and the internet. In 1969, CompuServe the first dial-up internet server company was created. By the mid-1980s
CompuServe was the largest information and networking services company in existence. Mostly used by government and educational sectors (as computers were very expensive back then), the internet allowed users to subscribe to daily information and entertainment from around the world - something we would greatly appreciate in decades to come. Today, we use the internet for everything – banking, researching, buying and selling – it’s the way we work, live and play. In 1971, the first email was sent by Microsoft via Hotmail, which not only revolutionised the tech world, it also changed the way we communicated and interacted with one another. Emails allowed users to send messages that took only seconds to reach their receivers. People and businesses were now able to send important information over very long distances at the click of a mouse – saving time and money. to Page 4

By the 1980s home computers were becoming more common, the first mobile phones were being launched and networking technology was becoming more and more sophisticated. Whether still in use today or not, you can start to see how all these developments have influenced and shaped the way social media looks and feels today. Throughout time, social media has made it easier for us to communicate, share ideas and content and reach larger audiences on multiple levels. Today, we have more interactive ways of communicating than ever before.
The Modern World In the 2000s, social media was taken to the next level, with the creation of internet chat rooms. Chat rooms allowed people to enter live chat pages to message friends and family all over the world. Some would argue that Facebook started the modern world’s social media trend, but it was really Myspace that brought the idea of the interactive online portal to life. Founded in 2003, one year before Facebook launched, Myspace allowed site members to chat with people from all over the world, create personal profiles and blogs for themselves, as well as add photos and share YouTube videos on their personalised profiles. From 2005 to early 2008 Myspace was the largest social networking site in the world. Until Facebook’s popularity sky-rocketed to an all-time high in late 2009.
Facebook is now one of the world’s leading social media platforms with over 1.79 billion active users, with individuals, professionals and companies all utilising its abilities to communicate, share content and promote their services. These days’ users can upload content and images from their phones, laptops and other devices to Facebook from anywhere and at any time (thanks to the creation of smartphones and tablets), they can play games and use apps through it, call people on its messenger app and can even stream live videos to their newsfeed. The interactive developments didn’t stop there either, with other social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat showcasing more complex features. Although it was released in 2011, Snapchat has only really taken off in the last few years. The app allows users to send images, video and messages to friends. The messages, videos and
images last 10 seconds before they disappear – opening up a portal where anything (good and bad) could be sent with the tap of a button. Just recently, the company introduced facial recognition feature Bitstrips, which gave users the option to use personalised cartoon avatars as part of their videos and images. The feature which is regularly updated, runs through your device’s camera, recognising your face and placing cartoon images over top. The feature is incredibly smart; when you move the cartoon images move with you, some even have additional features allowing you to open your mouth or close your eyes for extra animations. The feature can even change your voice using your device’s microphone. Technology will never stop changing, which means social media will continue to evolve and develop. There have been so many incredible developments in the last few decades and things are only going to get better. Embrace the change!

Fashion guru at 21 oung fashion designer, Laura McCulloch is living proof that you can achieve anything with a little elbow grease and determination. The Beenleigh local graduated with an advanced diploma in fashion design from the Australian Institute of Creative Design last year and has been working hard ever since. This year she showed off some of her incredible work at two RAW fashion shows and just recently launched her own fashion label, ZALiE – and she’s only 21 years old! Laura says she has always loved the freedom of designing things her own way. “I knew I would always do something in design, but it wasn’t until a year after high school that I finally decided to follow my heart and study fashion design. I found designing clothing to be so easy for me and once I started the ideas kept on flowing. I just fell in love with the art of designing clothing.” Laura says although the she loves the fashion industry, once she actually started looking into it as a career she saw many flaws. “As I started to look into this ‘glamorous’ industry I began to see the harsh reality our fast fashion purchases had on our environment and our people. Which is why it’s my aim to create and
Y
educate girls on sustainable and ethical clothing.” Laura says her designs are often inspired by festivals. “I have always loved the idea of Avant-Garde and thought the only place you can wear the craziest of things, in a toned-down way, was festivals! I began making myself as well as my friends, clothes to wear to festivals and was lucky enough to have girls take notice of my designs and request orders!” Laura has just released her newest collection ‘Flame Follower’, which was inspired by festival nights. “I set out to create a simple painting that I could base my collection around. Using the abstract colours of fire and heat I created a print that would eventually electrify a whole collection.” “To begin my design process, I start by having a quick look at current trends, but generally from a completely different genre of fashion. I began looking at couture and bridal to decipher cuts and styles that are currently trending and could be used in a different manner for ready to wear festival style.” “Once I had my basic outline of designs, I moved on to gathering the inspiration for detailing, which in this case was the aspects of a burning
fire; twigs, leaves and flames. Then I combined the two to create the collection.” Laura’s motivation and determination really goes to show that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it, no matter what age. Her ‘career’ advice for young aspiring fashion designers is “if you want something bad enough and put enough effort and time into something then you simply cannot fail. The only thing stopping you is yourself! So, keep at it and do not settle.” For more information on ZALiE visit www.zaliedesigns.com.au

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Vicki Smith
Moreton Bay’s hidden gems
T
he holiday season is upon us and I bet you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained or a quiet getaway for yourself. So, how about exploring some popular areas or hidden gems in and around Moreton Bay?
Wellington Point If you feel like getting out of the house or winding down after a busy day at work, why not take a drive down to Wellington Point? When the tide is low you can take a leisurely stroll out to King Island Conservation Park, wander around the pathways while taking in the freshness of the sea air or just meander out along the jetty to spot colourful fish or watch the pelicans. Once the stress of the day has subsided you can top the evening off by relaxing as you watch the sunset and beautiful colours that are often reflected in the water puddles at low tide.
Coochiemudlo Island Tell the kids you’re taking them to an island for the day, that’ll get their attention! Jump on the ferry from Victoria Point and head across Moreton Bay to beautiful, but often forgotten Coochiemudlo Island - it’ll take just 5 minutes. Pristine beaches, mangroves, bushland to explore, finding exotic shells, marvelling at driftwood patterns or going for a paddle are just some of the activities to fill your day. At the end of which the kids will be so exhausted that they’ll fall asleep early and you’ll have the evening to yourself! Heaven!
North Stradbroke Island
Stradbroke Island for a day’s adventure or stay for a weekend in one of the many hotels and resorts on offer. As for places to see, you will be spoilt for choice! Take a bus to explore North Gorge, check out Blue Lake, try your luck at fishing off Amity Jetty or explore the old cemetery and read about the islands interesting past. And after all this action, wind down by taking a dip in the crystal clear waters of Moreton Bay and wandering along the beaches marvelling at the coral shapes washed up on the shore. Whatever you choose to do you won’t be disappoint with this beautiful location. Drive and stay safe and above all, have a wonderful holiday season from the Champagne Travellers!
Time for some more island hopping! This time jump aboard a ferry and scoot across to North

EDUCATION, SKILLS & TRAINING with Amanda Sheehan SOMMELIER – Connoisseurs of wine, this might be your thing. A Sommelier manages all things wine for businesses such as upmarket restaurants and hotels. Unusual occupations Could your dream job be waiting just beneath the radar?
H
ow would you like to work as a Teddy Bear Repair technician? Or does the thought of cleaning IMAX screens have more appeal? If chewing gum is your thing, perhaps becoming a Gumologist may be a more suitable career choice. Don’t laugh. All of these jobs really do exist, even though they may not be at the forefront of your average job seeker’s mind. Australian job board Seek reports that occupations such as carpenters, forklift drivers and account managers are currently the most popular and sought after. For those who are willing to think outside the square, however, there are many unusual occupations that are every bit as purposeful, vital and potentially lucrative as their popular counterparts. According to Derek Lennon from JobMonkey. com, there is much to be said for considering unusual occupations. “There are plenty of jobs that are off the radar. These bizarre, unique,
strange, weird and odd jobs are often some of the coolest jobs around. Unfortunately, they are often overlooked by jobseekers because people are streamlined into more mainstream job opportunities like being a banker, coach, librarian, nurse or accountant”. Derek encourages job seekers to consider the more unusual options, believing that we owe it to ourselves to consider all options before making a career choice. “As a job seeker, it’s your responsibility to explore every job possibility that exists. That’s the best way to find a job that’s right for you. Sometimes jobs that are a bit off the beaten path can be a bit more interesting. They often appeal to people in a different way”.
MYSTERY SHOPPER – a shopaholic’s dream, they make a living by posing as a shopper who is in fact doing market research undercover.
PROFESSIONAL CUDDLER – this job has nothing to do with sex, and everything to do with providing comfort to people who need it.
Some unusual occupations you may not have considered include:
LUXURY BED TESTER – it’s a tough gig but someone has to do it. Whether you are in a mainstream job or something more unusual, feeling purposeful is key to satisfaction. “Find the right job and you’ll smile all day long”, explains Derek.

Sun safety a must this Summer
W
e’ve all been feeling it! Our Queensland Summer is back again and there’s no denying it’s in full swing! Although Summer is the perfect time to go to the beach with mates and have a dip in the pool out back, it’s also the perfect time to get sunburnt if you’re not being sun safe! According to Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift more than 3600 Queenslanders are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and it is estimated that over 350,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are treated. These statistics make Queensland the skin cancer capital of the world so it’s important we all take care when we head outdoors. Katie says sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes, even on cold and overcast days. “Sun protection is required when the UV Index level is three or above – in the Sunshine State, that is all year round, she says. Katie recommends Queenslanders abide by all five sun protective recommendations: 1. Slip on protective clothing 2. Slop on minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen 3. Seek shade 4. Slide on wrap-around sunnies when out and about. 5. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat

“Sunscreen or a good hat alone isn’t enough – we need to make the effort to do all we can to protect ourselves in hot weather, to reduce our skin cancer risk. Dr Mileham Hayes from Molechex Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinics says five minutes a day in summer on our arms should be enough to ensure our adequate vitamin D levels. “Most people prepare for the beach, put on sunscreen and cover up. The exception to this are those who ‘binge burn’ go red and blister. This is thought to be a trigger to initiate skin cancers. “Most skin cancers and melanomas are from day to day insidious, non-thinking exposure. They occur on our faces, hands and on the nose. Our noses, and with short hair, our ears, stick out most and that’s where the sun hits us every day, but we don’t think about it until it’s too late. “So the message is cover up, use sunscreen on faces, ears and hands and get regular checks. Dr Mileham says although Queensland has the highest rate of melanoma and skin cancers in the world, we also have the earliest detection services and best cure rates.

5 tips to beat hunger cravings
Y
ou know the feeling. You have just eaten a full meal, but you are hungry again 30 minutes later. Or you are looking for snacks and unexpectedly polish o a packet of Tim Tams or chips. One of the culprits behind this behaviour is your body’s most important hormone insulin. When you eat infrequently or have a diet heavy in sugar, your body will experience drastic spikes in insulin which causes hunger cravings and destroy any fat loss efforts. So how can you beat hunger and stay satisfied throughout the day? Here are five simple strategies that work.
1. Eat frequently This might seem like a bad thing if you are trying to lose weight but if you eat more often, and eat less at each meal you will normalise blood sugar levels and control insulin spikes. 2. Drink water The body often mistakes thirst for hunger, so if you find yourself eating a full meal and still craving more, try reaching for a glass of water before refilling your plate. 3. Eat breakfast You have heard it before - breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a sufficiently fulfilling breakfast prepares you for the day and reduces insulin spikes throughout the rest of your day.
4. Eat more fruits and veggies Fruits and vegetables, generally low in calories, are more filling than, for example, a bag of chips which have hundreds more calories with little nutritional value. Green, leafy vegetables are rich in Vitamin K and fibre, which helps regulate insulin. Eating salads before meals will help you eat less during the meal, while still ensuring you are satisfied and get all of the nutrients and helpful enzymes you need. 5. Mindful Eating Most people know the feeling of eating some snacks and eating more than they wanted or needed. A classic example is eating some chips while watching TV and before you know it, the whole bag is finished.
What am I eating? While this type of eating can be hard to stop, the best way to deal with it practice mindful eating and before your meal or snack, ask yourself:
Why am I eating?
Managing your insulin levels is the most important factor in beating hunger cravings and the solution does not need to be complex or expensive. Keep this in mind the next time you are hungry especially during the festive season. Cameron Corish, Holistic Lifestyle Coach Core Health Coaching www.corehealthcoaching.com.au
