Spring is definitely here on the South Coast! The weather is warming up, kids are enjoying school holidays and there are festivals and events everywhere! The 2014 Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival is on 17-19 October, with a program set to be the best yet. The region will be full of colour, excitement and family fun the following weekend, 25-26 October, with the 40th annual Illawarra Spring Rose Show in Jamberoo and the Shoalhaven River Festival on the shores of the Shoalhaven River in Nowra. There’ll also be colour and excitement aplenty on Sunday 19 October at Nowra’s Archer Racecourse for the annual Mollymook Cup with its fun, fashions and flutters! Ironically, Kiama’s Black Beach will be full of colour on Saturday 18 October - mostly blue, red and orange - as the venue for the 2014 Emergency Services Expo. Take your kids to see the
impressive equipment and people of our emergency services. When it comes to special people, congratulations to Carole Ruta and Ian Gray of South Coast Providores in Berry. They recently received gold, silver and bronze medals in the prestigious Sydney Royal Regional Food Competition for their locallymade conserves, proving yet again what a tremendous food bowl the South Coast region is. Page 9 has more about their win. If you’re looking to impress the kids or grandkids this month, head to the Illawarra Fly Treetop walk to discover your ‘inner forest dweller’. Show the ad on page 5 and you’ll receive a 20 percent discount off a full adult admission price until 31 October. So much to see and do; ‘spring into it!’ See you around the South Coast.

It Runs in the Family at the Roo Theatre See It Runs in the Family at the Roo Theatre from 3 October till 18 October 2014. This is a classis Ray Cooney farce. People who should never meet are brought together as quickly as

Fine food comp medal haul for South Coast Providores Their passion for culinary perfection has earned South Coast Providores’ Carole Ruta and Ian Gray gold, silver and bronze medals in the prestigious 2014 Sydney Royal Regional Food Competition. The Berry-based producer of quality conserves, preserves, chutneys, relishes and sauces claimed gold and silver medals in the Sweet Conserves class gold for their organic rhubarb and silver for their strawberry conserve. Their walnuts in honey for cheese won bronze in the Sweet Spreads and Pastes category while their roasted beetroot and red wine relish earned bronze in the Chutneys and Relishes class. Carole and Ian’s walnuts in honey has also featured in TV personality Lyndey Milan’s newly released cookbook Taste of Australia. ‘We’re delighted with the results and it’s such a thrill to also be featured in Lyndey’s new book. ‘We’re blessed in this region with such wonderful fresh ingredients and it makes all the difference’, Carole said. The organic rhubarb conserve is fantastic on scones or pikelets and delicious in a Queen of Puddings, which is this month’s featured recipe on page 11. The strawberry conserve is delicious on any bread for breakfast or afternoon tea. Walnuts in honey for cheese marries
well with all cheeses but goes especially well with a blue cheese or a soft Brie or Camembert. ‘A dinner party trick is to empty a whole jar of walnuts in honey over a soft cheese and present it as a dessert. Easy!’ Its long, slow production process creates the roasted beetroot and red wine relish’s concentrated flavour which nicely complements any barbequed or charcuterie meats. The Sydney Royal Regional Food Competition sees regional products from around Australia judged in 37 classes, with all products at least 85% Australian grown and made.

Booderee camping... a “phenomenal experience” The weather is warming up, days are getting longer and the water’s more inviting – all the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable camping holiday in the beautiful natural surroundings of Booderee National Park. Located on the shores of pristine Jervis Bay, Booderee National Park offers three well maintained camping grounds at Green Patch, Bristol Point and Cave Beach. All sites are unpowered, offering a genuine wilderness camping experience, but with a few conveniences to make your stay more comfortable. Here’s how Mark from Sydney described his Booderee National Park camping experience: “Our camping experience was phenomenal... the site was immaculate and incredibly well kept including safety, the trees had suspect branches removed... the amenities were modern and well maintained, we saw all manner
of Australian wildlife... the beach was beautiful and the bush was amazing. “As an Aussie, it was the best Australian experience I have ever had in a campground, and more than any international visitor could ask for to give them a taste of Australia and good things to say about this country when they get home”, he said. The sites are perfectly located for playing on the beaches, exploring natural flora and fauna on the many walking tracks, enjoying lunch at one of several picnic areas or catching a glimpse of migrating Humpbacks or Southern Right Whales from Cape St George Lighthouse. Bookings are essential to secure these picturesque sites, and can be made up to four months in advance.
Weekend sites at Green Patch and Bristol Point are usually fully booked up to a month in advance during the warmer months of October through to May. Sites at Cave Beach are set in a grass area behind the beach, but you will need to carry your camping gear the 300 metres from the car park to your site. Currently, during the peak Christmas/ New Year school holiday period, campsites at Green Patch and Bristol Point are allocated via ballot. Coming soon! Online campsite bookings. Check our website for details. Visit www.booderee.gov.au, email booderee.mail@environment.gov.au or call the Visitor Centre on 4443 0977 between 9am and 4pm daily for more information about camp site bookings, park fees, attractions and facilities.

Sussex Inlet is an awesome area for recreational boating, both large and small boat owners can while away many hours on the keys, inlet and ocean over the warmer months. Some simple safety tips to help keep you safe on the water include: • Ensure your vessel is seaworthy – check and fix faults before you go out • Check the weather before you leave and get regular updates • Ensure you have enough water and fuel • Always log on with your nearest Marine Rescue NSW when you’re heading out – and remember to log
off when you return. • Always wear your life jacket. It can’t save your life if you don’t have it on • Know how to use your Marine Radio. Many MRNSW units offer public courses on radio use. • Keep a proper lookout at all times • Alcohol and water don’t mix – stay under 0.05% • Don’t overload your boat • If crossing a bar, first view live web-cam footage or seek out local knowledge. www.marinerescuensw.com.au/ boating-safety

Ulladulla, Coastal Villages and beyond Lake Conjola - Milton - Mollymook - Burrill Lake - Bendalong - Bawley Point - Lake Tabourie - Durras - Kioloa
Ulladulla, Milton, Mollymook and Coastal Villages Ulladulla Harbour is the home port of the largest commercial fishing fleet on the NSW South Coast. The town has modern shopping and several fine clubs as well as a leisure centre, cinema complex and the famous Funland. There are some great places to surf, snorkel and dive in nearby Mollymook. Milton is classified by the ‘National Trust’ and has a myriad of wonderful B&Bs, as well as boutiques and shops to browse. The coastal villages of Bendalong and Manyana, are set amongst a beautiful backdrop of bush and beach. Lake Conjola is a deep coastal lake which provides a wonderful playground for fishers and boaters. Just south of Ulladulla is Burrill Lake, where you will find a perfect setting for boating, sailing, windsurfing, prawning (in season), snorkelling or surfing.
Lake Tabourie Located about 10 km south of Ulladulla this lake is fairly shallow and suitable for low-draft vessels, kayaks and canoes. It is also a haven for birdlife and there are a number of excellent beaches on the adjoining coastline.
Bawley Point
What to See & Do ■ Take a trip to Bendalong - not too far north from Ulladulla. ■ Explore the Coomee Nulunga Cultural Trail, created by the local Aboriginal Land Council.
Climb to the top of nearby Pigeon House Mountain ■
Visitors to Bawley Point can expect to find tranquil lagoons, beaches and headlands where the local delicacy is prawns. A large amount of the surrounding area has been reserved as a wildlife sanctuary.
Durras A beautiful spot to stop and kayak or spend a few nights. Boasting several stunning beaches. Stay in a tent, caravan or cabin and enjoy everything Murramarang National Park has to offer: walking, swimming and fishing.
Walk across from Lake Tabourie to tranquil Crampton Island at low tide. ■
■ Enjoy swimming, surfing or fishing at one of the many beaches. Go boating, kayaking, canoeing or fishing on one of the many lakes. ■ Visit Funland Ulladulla to enjoy three floors of games and rides.

With the silly season creeping up fast, theatre goers will be in for an Aussie Christmas treat when Summer Wonderland dazzles in November. The Milton Follies community theatre group will present the award winning play by Matthew Ryan at the historic Milton Theatre over six nights from November 7 - 16. Director K-M Doyle fell in love with the production when she saw the premiere in Brisbane at La Boîte Theatre in 2007. Featuring nine well known local players, the adults show is expected to be another sell-out success for the Follies. The hilarious play examines family relationships, loneliness, love, self confidence and battles with neighbours, all through the context of a Christmas lights competition in a typical suburban Aussie cul-de-sac. “Presenting a contemporary Australian play may be something new for Follies and I’m looking forward to challenging audiences and actors, and presenting something new, exciting and hilarious,” K-M said. Tickets for Summer Wonderland are $25 and available from Country Leather in Milton. For show updates and to meet the cast, search ‘Milton Follies’ on Facebook.
