Welcome to the National Forest & Beyond We’re creating a new forest for the nation and we can’t wait for you to see it. Over the following pages, you’ll find a host of things to see and do and places to stay in and around our 200 square miles – a vibrant and varied landscape that takes in ancient forest and newly planted woodland, wildflower meadows and rugged, rocky uplands. You’ll find reminders of the region’s industrial heritage, atmospheric castles and mighty manor houses, bluebell woods and country parks home to herds of deer. This guide will give you a taste of what the National Forest & Beyond has to offer, but we can only squeeze in so much. If you want the full picture, you’ll have to come and experience it for yourself. The National Forest is one of Britain’s boldest environmental projects, creating a forest for the nation across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. More than 8.5 million trees have been planted so far, trebling the woodland cover to create thriving woodlands and flourishing habitats for wildlife, and a beautiful landscape for everyone to enjoy. You can help create this ‘forest in the making’ through our Plant a Tree scheme. You will be invited to a special tree planting day and receive a certificate. This makes a great gift! Heritage

Donington le Heath. Watch out for displays, exhibitions and events throughout the year.

The National Forest & Beyond is rich in history with ancient castles, grand homes and amazing museums that unlock the door to our industrial past.

Our mining heritage has transformed places like Sence Valley Forest Park and Hicks Lodge: The National Forest Cycle Centre into a wildlife oasis. Conkers is similarly attractive and here you can visit the South Derbyshire Mining Museum. Find out how frightening it was to work in a 19th-Century blast furnace at Moira Furnace Museum or see working beam engines at Claymills Pumping Station. Pottery was another big industry for this area and at Sharpe’s Pottery Museum you can trace its historical past and attend talks, events and exhibitions including the Toilet Story.

At home with history Frozen-in–time Calke Abbey is a mustsee for its bizarre collection of artefacts assembled by previous eccentric owners. Take a walk through the formal grounds of Melbourne Hall & Gardens – you’ll feel like you are on the set of a Jane Austen novel! Stoneywell, created by architect-designer Ernest Gimson is a rare example of an Arts and Crafts cottage, or try the beautifully preserved 1620’s House & Garden at

National Memorial Arboretum

25

The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance. The Arboretum features over 300 thought provoking memorials for military, public service and civilian organisations and associations, along with tributes for individuals. Rich in design and symbolism, and sympathetic to the lush gardens they inhabit, the memorials all have fascinating stories behind them. The 150-acre site is situated at the heart of the country on the edge of The National Forest, and is within close proximity to major road networks including the A38, A50, M1, M42 and M6. The Arboretum is open daily from 9am to 5pm with the exception of Christmas Day. With a daily Act of Remembrance, guided walks, buggy tours, a land train, a children’s woodland and activity area, restaurant and shop and a varied programme of events and activities there’s lots for everyone to explore, discover and remember. Set to open in autumn 2016, the Arboretum’s new Remembrance Centre will feature a remodelled restaurant and cafe, new retail facilities, a large welcome and orientation area, and an exhibition space dedicated to the interpretation of Remembrance and how it impacts us as individuals, as families and as a society. Admission Free. Small car parking charges apply. Opening times: 9am-5pm (dusk in winter months). Croxall Road, Alrewas, Staffordshire DE13 7AR Tel: 01283 245100 info@thenma.org.uk www.thenma.org.uk
