Welcome... to the Summer & Autumn edition of What’s On in South Derbyshire and The National Forest Amid rolling English countryside dotted with picturesque villages you will find so much to enjoy; from historic houses and gardens, to meandering rivers and canals, to archery and snowboarding. All set in the heart of The National Forest, Britain’s most ambitious environmental project. Linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood, more than eight million trees have already been planted. The woodland is being created on a scale not seen for more than a thousand years, creating stunning landscapes and wildlife habitats. Come and enjoy it this season.

9th September – 14th October 2015 The Melbourne Festival brings a celebration of the creative and performing arts to this gem of a village. The centrepiece of the month long event is the Art & Architecture Trail which takes place over the weekend of the 17 & 18 September. The Trail brings a late Summer splash of colour and energy to Melbourne with a mix of new artists and old favourites. Visiting professional artists are hosted in rooms made available in private houses. Featuring a variety of mediums and styles of work, there is something for every taste and pocket. This year Derbyshire is celebrating its culture and heritage. Melbourne Festival will be joining in with a Made in Derbyshire theme at Melbourne Assembly Rooms featuring twelve Derbyshire artists including Nicki Dennett, Cheryl Wilbraham and Kerri Pratt. Families are specially catered for with plenty to amuse young children and Art Exhibitions showing work from local schools and playgroups inspired by the traditional tale of The Wind in the Willows. Look out for Toad, Ratty, Badger and friends (parade at 3.30pm each afternoon). Back by popular demand on the Trail this year are the Food Festival and Food Court. Food is also available at the Art Cafe at Melbourne Assembly Rooms, along with Melbourne’s great cafés, restaurants and pubs and the popup church and charity tea shops! The Busk Stops are now so popular there will be THREE Music Marquees with live music from 12-5pm on Saturday and 12-4pm on Sunday.
Highlights of this year’s Festival include:

Following on from their successful adaptation of David Walliams’ “Mr Stink”, Heartbreak Productions return to The Glade with the theatrical premiere of “Ratburger”. Join the Grand Opening Party of “Armitage’s Ices”, the ice cream parlour set up by Zoe and her Dad and follow 12 year old Zoe’s journey as she takes on the revolting characters that have proved to be one of the hallmarks of David Walliams’ appeal. Our heroine has a profound love of animals and a dream of travelling the world that keep her going as she copes with her disgusting neighbours, her recently unemployed dad, and the menacing Burt (of Burt’s Burgers) who is after Zoe and her pet rat! Recommended for aged 7+. Doors open at 3pm so bring a picnic.
Join us for an evening of carnival themed musical magic and singalong to all the Proms favourites with Newhall Band. Arena open from 5.30pm, performance at 7pm. Don’t forget to bring a picnic and of course your picnic rug and be prepared for all weathers!
