Welcome... to the Summer & Autumn edition of What’s On in South Derbyshire and The National Forest Amid rolling English countryside dotted with picturesque villages you will find so much to enjoy; from historic houses and gardens, to meandering rivers and canals, to archery and snowboarding. All set in the heart of The National Forest, Britain’s most ambitious environmental project. Linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood, more than eight million trees have already been planted. The woodland is being created on a scale not seen for more than a thousand years. Come and enjoy it this season.

2 September – 14 October 2017 Welcome to the Melbourne Festival of the Creative and Performing Arts Make a date for the Festival’s Art & Architecture Trail on 16th and 17th September when you will see over 120 professional artists and makers exhibiting in private houses, public buildings and businesses in the historic heart of Melbourne. The Trail Guide and tickets are only available on the day for £5. The trail showcases the best creative talents from across the East Midlands and much more besides. Expect a party atmosphere with music, food and fun activities for youngsters, and the young at heart. Each year the Festival has a theme, in 2017 look out for “The Love of Lettuce” - thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Melbourne Festival has a big project celebrating Melbourne’s Market Gardening Heritage. Look out for exhibitions around the Trail, pop-up vegetable plots and Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and Beatrix Potter. If you thought Melbourne Festival was just for the creative arts, think again. The Performing Arts has become more adventurous and more successful each year. The programme includes an eclectic mix of music, theatre and comedy and sometimes all three at the same time! Melbourne Festival has been run by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers since its inception in 2005 and has established itself as one of the highlights of South Derbyshire’s cultural calendar.

Great pubs and bars, great nights out The Boot, Boot Hill, Repton
01283 346 047 www.thebootatrepton.co.uk The Boot is the AA Pub of the Year for England 2016-17: “The Boot’s first occupant in the 17th century was a cobbler who hung a boot outside to attract customers; while mending their footwear he’d offer them a glass of ale. Today there’s no point bringing your shoes in for new soles, but ale is most certainly still offered – Clod Hopper, Tuffer’s Old Porter and Bumble Boots (a Summer ale) are brewed on site. Now renovated and refurbished, the inn makes a good choice for a drink, a meal and for overnight luxury accommodation if you’re in this lovely part of the country”.
The Chip & Pin, High Street, Melbourne
07957 806 454 www.chipandpinpub.com South Derbyshire’s first micropub, the Chip & Pin, was voted ‘Best Micro Pub’ in the UK by The Times: “There’s no bar in this former bank; ales are served straight from the cask. The old manager’s office is available for private do’s”.
