Welcome... to the Autumn & Winter edition of What’s On in South Derbyshire and The National Forest Amid rolling English countryside dotted with picturesque villages you will find so much to enjoy; from historic houses and gardens, to meandering rivers and canals, to archery and snowboarding. All set in the heart of The National Forest, Britain’s most ambitious environmental project. Linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood, more than eight million trees have already been planted. The woodland is being created on a scale not seen for more than a thousand years, creating stunning landscapes and wildlife habitats. Come and enjoy it this season.

Food sharing is really taking off in Swadlincote since it became the first place outside of London to launch the OLIO app. There are now 10 drop boxes all over town allowing you to share food with your community that would otherwise have gone to waste. It has reached 800 OLIOers and has helped rescue over 3,000 items to date. It is continuing to grow organically, so join the revolution today by downloading the OLIO app. The 8 Food Saver Champions have attended many events over the Summer months to bring the Waste less, Save more message to local residents. They have shared a wealth of knowledge and ideas. They have learnt a lot from the public too, which is great! People are becoming more and more aware of the issues of food waste, and the enormous amount of food that is thrown away from our homes in the UK each year. The Waste less, Save more Facebook page is soon to reach its 1,000th follower. The Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge has kicked off with over 40 families taking part. Each family selected £100 worth of food saving equipment to start them on their journey of food waste minimisation. Chosen families had fun at cooking workshops that demonstrated some resourceful skills in the kitchen. The theme was ‘winging it’ recipes that can be quickly prepared and enjoyed. Participating families are having great fun and have learnt valuable knowledge and skills, and their feedback has been fantastic! We wish them luck for the rest of the programme! The community fridge has opened, this is a free to use facility for all residents to help them share food in Swadlincote. It is run by South Derbyshire CVS who take in surplus food from residents and local businesses and check it is safe for redistribution before putting it in the specially built Community Fridge room at the rear of their offices. Come and see what they have to offer at the CVS on Grove Street, Swadlincote, DE11 9DD between 10am-3pm Monday-Friday.

The Food Saver Champions have regular dates at all the local Sainsbury’s in the Swadlincote area. They will be cooking food on different food waste themes, from store cupboard rustle-ups to fruit rescue. So look out for them with their bright orange van, and come ask us anything about food waste to help you Waste less and Save more. The Fab Food education project will be continuing in all the local primary schools, and during the Autumn term it will include a special menu magician and the Food Saver Champions to make it enjoyable for all the family. With the chillier weather starting we will be able to offer campfire cooking sessions to demonstrate cooking over an open fire, which will alight the children’s food passion and help to minimise food waste.

The Food Saver Champions are looking for residents to join in several food saving initiatives including: •

Innovation Kitchen where families will be given 5 new products that will extend the life of your fresh fruit and veg to save you money. Winnow Bins, which are smart technology bins, weigh your food waste and convert it to a cash value in pounds and pence so you can see how much you’re throwing away every week. Sainsbury’s Smart Planner app trial will allow residents to test out technology to help you to save money by planning your online or instore shopping so you only get what you need. You can browse recipes and your regularly bought items. Also if you do end up with a few items in your fridge or store cupboard you can use the food rescue option in order to generate recipes to use it up. Savvy Shopper is a personal shopping project to bring people together to learn how they can shop differently, helping people to buy the correct amount for what they need, and trying different products which will help them feed the bin less and bellies more. Savvy Shopper will help participants to save money by wasting less food without compromising on the quality of food.

Tel: 01283 563483 Email: tor@roslistonforestrycentre.co.uk Price: £3.50 per person to include drink and mince pie.

If you are interested in any of these initiatives please e-mail swadlinoctewlsm@icloud.com www.sainsburys.co.uk/wasteless | Follow us on Facebook to keep up with everything that’s happening.
