Simply South Dakota Outdoor Pleasures

Make your own adventure in Southeast South Dakota. More than 175 natural and manmade lakes, along with three major rivers, provide endless oppor tunities to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and the scenic beauty of the region. Recreational facilities range from fully outfitted recreational complexes to rustic hideaways. The “Mighty Mo” and surrounding area is a destination of recreational possibilities limited only by you. Par t of the Missouri River's Wild and Scenic River System, the 98 mile stretch designated as “The Missouri National Recreational River”, offers canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, hunting, camping and much more. Surrounded by picturesque bluffs, rolling hills and wooded wildlife areas along the river's banks, the Missouri River is also the major Nor th American migratory waterfowl flyway, making it a must see favorite for bird lovers. Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, just west of Yankton on Lewis & Clark Lake, is the region’s largest park and has become one of South Dakota's top outdoor recreation destinations. City and county parks offer additional treasures for you to discover. Among these is Falls Park, in Sioux Falls. From its five story observation tower you can observe the falls of the Big Sioux River as well as the city skyline. If golfing is in your blood, you'll find top rated courses in Sioux Falls and throughout the region, some providing breathtaking scenic vistas of the Missouri River. For winter spor ts enthusiasts, Great Bear Recreation Area, near Sioux Falls, offers downhill skiing and tubing. For more winter adventure, try ice fishing. There may be ice on the lakes, but the fish are still biting.

Attractions, Festivals & Events

Almost every town in southeast South Dakota suppor ts a museum or collection of interest. Explore the Corn Maze near Harrisburg or observe hundreds of butterflies flying freely year round and have a close encounter with sharks and stingrays at the Touch Pool at the Butterfly House & Marine Cove in Sioux Falls. Visit the newly renovated Corn Palace in Mitchell, complete with light up color changing domes, larger murals and a grand entry. Murals are created from thousands of bushels of corn, grains and native grasses. The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls also has a recently renovated entrance that features a Snow Monkey exhibit. The Children’s Museum in Brookings has interactive hands-on exhibits where children have fun learning. Spend a day in the past at Prairie Village in Madison where you can visit a turn of the century town as well as ride a steam powered carousel and locomotive. You'll also find family fun parks, waterparks, water shows and more. Enjoy an authentic German meal at Freeman's Schmeckfest, sample a homemade kolache at Tabor's Czech Days, get a taste of Denmark at Viborg’s Danish Days or eat your fill of kuchen at Delmont’s Kuchen Festival. To relive the ‘good ol’ days’, come to old-fashioned harvest and steam threshing festivals at Delmont, Madison, Menno and Brandon. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant in DeSmet brings Laura’s world-famous books to life before your eyes. Rural heritage and entertainment come together to offer fun for the whole family at rodeos and county fairs throughout the region. Thrill to the spectacle of armored jousting, fire-breathers and jesters at the Siouxland Renaissance Festival in Sioux Falls or immerse yourself in Native American culture at a powwow.

If you’re a bird watcher, whether you’re just learning or you’ve been doing it for years, don’t miss the South Dakota Birding Festival, near Wagner, held in May. Follow the Sioux Quar tzite Outcrop Trail to scenic and historic destinations at Garretson, Dell Rapids, and locations throughout Sioux Falls. Cultural Heritage & the Arts

As the region's largest city, Sioux Falls offers historical museums, downtown dining, nightlife, ar t galleries and theaters. You'll find a vintage trolley system that provides free rides to Falls Park, the Old Cour thouse Museum and a variety of unique restaurants. Stop along the way at the Washington Pavilion of Ar ts and Science – one of the only facilities in the country to house a visual ar ts center, a hands-on science center, a performing ar ts center and the Wells Fargo CineDome with a 60-foot domed screen. See a real Broadway show, a concer t or a local theatrical production. Tour the Pettigrew Home and Museum, the beautifully restored 1889 home of South Dakota’s first senator, R.F. Pettigrew. The SculptureWalk in Downtown Sioux Falls features over 50 new original works of ar t each year. Yankton and Vermillion also have sculptures throughout the downtown. Discover outstanding works of ar t by Native Americans and other regional ar tists at the Dakota Discovery Museum and the Carnegie Resource Center in Mitchell, the Center for Western Studies and the Washington Pavilion's Visual Ar ts Center in Sioux Falls, The South Dakota Ar t Museum in Brookings and other museums and galleries throughout the region. Museums in Sioux Falls, Dell Rapids, Freeman, Madison, Mitchell, Vermillion, Wessington Springs and Yankton display ar tifacts that showcase the rich Native American and pioneering history of the region. The National Music Museum in Vermillion features musical instruments spanning five centuries from around the globe. If you love jazz, don’t miss the Sioux Falls’ JazzFest in July. It’s the largest free outdoor jazz and blues festival in the Midwest! If your preference is folk music, check out the Sioux River Folk Festival at Newton Hills State Park held in August. Mark your calendar for these annual ar t events: Madison's Mar t in the Park in July, Yankton Riverboat Days & Summer Ar ts Festival in August, the Sidewalk Ar ts Festival in Sioux Falls during September, plus many more.

Shopping, Dining & Accommodations

Many stores and specialty shops throughout the region carry quality items that are made in South Dakota, including buffalo jerky, homemade jams, quilts and more. If you love antiques, communities that offer exceptional antique shopping include Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Yankton. Indulge your taste buds with the diverse eating establishments found in southeast South Dakota. You’ll find locally produced foods as well as a variety of authentic ethnic and international cuisine. Edgar’s Ol’ Fashioned Soda Fountain, in Elk Point, serves sodas, phosphates and other ice cream treats at a restored turn-of-thecentury soda fountain. At Stensland Family Farms Store you can choose from over 20 flavors of fresh churned ice cream made from locally produced dairy ingredients. Several local wineries, which grow their own grapes and make their wine on the premises, also offer tours, wine tasting and special events throughout the year. The lodging choices in southeast South Dakota include everything from a charming rural retreat or cozy rustic lodge atop the scenic bluffs of the Missouri River to upscale business lodging with all the amenities. The extensive trail systems throughout southeast South Dakota are calling out to those who love to explore or who just want to experience the clear air and wonderful scenery found here. Pick your favorite mode of transpor tation: bicycle, horseback, cross-country skis, snowmobile or your own two feet. Trails range from meticulously groomed, paved and level surfaces, to terrain suitable for only the most extreme mountain biker or hiker. A variety of guided “Walk in the Park” hikes are available at our state park. Handicap accessible trails are located at Beaver Creek Nature Area and Big Sioux, Lewis & Clark and Pierson Ranch Recreation Areas. These state parks offer equestrian trails as well as camping facilities designed for horses and their riders: Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, Newton Hills State Park and Union Grove State Park. Big Sioux Recreation Area and Clay County Park also provide horse trails. South Dakota’s newest state park, Good Ear th State Park at Blood Run, is located just east of Sioux Falls. This National Historic Landmark is the location of a large Native American sacred site. It features 2 miles of hiking trails through Bur Oak Forest, native tall grass prairie and winds along the banks of the Big Sioux River. Newton Hills Woodland Trail, near Canton, is on the National Recreational Trails registry. Crossing dense forests and open grasslands, it is an exceptional trail for birdwatchers. An observation tower provides a bird’s eye view of a wooded valley. To see a century old homestead, visit the Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve near Nor th Sioux City. Palisades State Park, near Garretson. A challenging climb on towering Sioux quar tzite spires and sheer cliff walls await the more adventurous outdoorsman. Devil’s Gulch also provides scenic trails to Devil’s Falls and Devil’s Stairway amidst legends of outlaw Jesse James. Union Grove State Park, near Beresford, features a 4 mile multi-use trail and a large variety of trees which provide fall color and habitat for birds and wildlife. Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Five miles of trails ramble through woodland and prairie. A bicycle trail connects with the nearby town of Brandon. In winter, snowshoers and snowmobilers can hit the trails and relax afterwards at the warming house. Nearby Beaver Creek Nature Area is a good place to observe wildlife. Both parks feature historic 1800’s log cabins. Stand where Lewis and Clark stood 200 years ago. Take the three-quar ter mile trail to the summit of Spirit Mound, near Vermillion, where over 300 acres of prairie has been restored. Interpretive signage makes this hike a learning experience. Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, Yankton, has miles of trails including paved lakeside trails and rugged mountain bike trails. The system of trails also connects to nearby Yankton. The newly opened double decker Meridian Bridge Trail in Yankton offers hikers and bikers great views of the Missouri River. Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails connecting Garretson, Dell Rapids, Brookings, Madison, Mitchell, DeSmet, Huron, Lennox and Parker offer winter fun. Geocaching: A Techno-Treasure Hunt

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt using hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) units. The geocachers hide and seek "treasures," which are found in waterproof containers and typically include a pencil, small notebook/logbook and several trinkets like key chains, small toys and buttons. Geocaches can range in size from a small film canister to bigger than a 5-gallon bucket. Geocachers hide the geocache and enter coordinates (latitude and longitude) on a website. Others download the coordinates, enter them into a GPS unit and hunt for the geocache. Finders enter

their names and date into the cache logbook. The finders can then take an object from the cache while leaving something of equal or higher value. The finders replace the geocache in the same place where they found it for future geocachers to find. Geocaching is popular across the state, including many state parks. State park caches are listed on www.gfp.sd.gov/to-do/geocaching/. The area between Lennox and Menno has dozens of caches arranged to spell the word “GEOCACHING”. You can also geocache the Oyate Trail across southern South Dakota and receive a special coin. To find these and other cache coordinates go to www.geocaching.com. A small, but scenic geologic wonder, Palisades State Park is nestled among the sheer cliffs overlooking the Split Rock Creek just a shor t half-hour’s drive from Sioux Falls. The park offers the regular menu of outdoor recreation oppor tunities, including camping, hiking and picnicking. But it also offers a unique form of outdoor excitement for the more adventuresome at hear t. Palisades is one of just a few premier rock climbing sites in the Midwest. Numerous climbing routes are easily accessed and provide a wide assor tment of climbing experiences. Sioux quar tzite formations play host to a variety of face and crack climbs, with even a few hidden bouldering sites thrown in for good measure. Whether top-roping a novice route on South Wall or Rattlesnake Rock, or a more ambitious route at Swing Set Cove or on Positron, climbers from all over the Midwest make the trek to Palisades to take on

the forces of gravity. When you think of rock climbing, you don’t always have to venture out to the mountains. Sometimes a prairie oasis like Palisades State Park may offer more than meets the eye. And the views experienced while hanging from a rope fifty feet above the waters of Split Rock Creek are quite different than those experienced by other park visitors. It’s all a matter of perspective! The nearby city of Garretson, just two miles nor th of the park, provides all the services necessary for an extended visit. Lewis and Clark Visitor Center is a great place to learn more about the expedition, the tribes they encountered and the river itself. Built on a bluff overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake and the Gavins Point Dam, the center offers incredible photo oppor tunities. Located on Hwy. 52 west of Yankton. Spirit Mound:

On Sept. 2, 1806, on their return trip, Lewis and Clark met up with a group of Yankton Sioux and after realizing they were friends, smoked several pipes and exchanged news. Standing Bear Bridge now spans the Missouri connecting South Dakota and Nebraska near that site. A scenic lookout offers a breathtaking view of the river.

At Adams Nature Preserve, you can see one of the last freeflowing segments of the Missouri River. Miles of hiking and biking trails crisscross the preserve. Near Nor th Sioux City. 605-232-0873

Following the death of Sgt. Floyd, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark needed a sergeant to replace him. A vote was held August 22, 1804. Patrick Gass received 19 votes in what is believed to be the first election by U.S. citizens west of the Mississippi. This election was held where the town of Elk Point now stands. Local tribes believed that 18-inch devils, armed with arrows, inhabited this prairie hill. The story sparked Lewis and Clarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest, and on Aug. 25, 1804, they set off on foot to investigate. The men hiked for 4 hours, but at the top, the infamous devils were nowhere to be found. However, the explorers did see an incredible sight: a herd of buffalo, nearly 800 of them, grazed in the distance. Spirit Mound Historic Prairie is located 6 miles nor th of Vermillion on Hwy. 19. It features a 3/4 mile hiking trail to summit with interpretive signage and 300 acres of prairie currently restored to original grasses and wildflowers. 605-987-2263

Big Sioux River

Originating in nor theastern South Dakota, the Big Sioux River winds southward to Sioux Falls, where it forms the boundary between South Dakota and Iowa until it meets the Missouri River. With good water levels in the spring and early summer, it is possible to paddle from US Hwy 14 near Brookings to the river’s confluence with the Missouri River. Paddlers favor the segment from Lien Park in Sioux Falls to Newton Hills State Park. Points of interest include Big Sioux Recreation Area, Gitchie Manitou Park, the old Klondike Mills site and Newton Hills State Park. Big Sioux Recreation Area and Newton Hills State Park have canoe launch sites and camping facilities. Park entrance license is required. Be cer tain to locate ALL dams before setting out.

James River

The James River, a typical prairie stream, has been noted as the longest unnavigable river in the world. For tunately, this distinction doesn’t apply to paddlers who travel the river in spring and early summer. There are a number of access points near US and SD Highways.

Split Rock Creek

Split Rock Creek winds a scenic route through nor theastern Minnehaha County before meeting the Big Sioux River east of Sioux Falls. During high water flow in spring and after heavy summer rain, it is one of South Dakota’s best streams for white-water paddlers. The stream drops 130 feet in 8 miles between the SD Hwy 11 access west of Garretson through Palisades State Park to the SD Hwy 11 access nor th of Corson. Access can be found at Palisades State Park as well as McHardy Park in Brandon. The sheer walls of red quar tzite that line por tions of the creek provide a scenic trip for paddlers.

Vermillion River

Generally, this scenic river can be paddled from spring to fall from Centerville south to the Missouri River. Launching access may be found at rights-of-way that cross the river. Late summer and fall canoeing is best from the road crossing east of Wakonda to the Missouri River. Colorful fall foliage is especially showy from Vermillion southward.

The Missouri National Recreational River

The Missouri National Recreational River preserves two stretches of the Missouri River. Forming much of the border between South Dakota and Nebraska, it is also par t of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wild and Scenic River system. Congress added the 59-mile reach between Gavins Point Dam and Ponca State Park in 1978 and the 39-mile reach, which includes the lower 20 miles of the Niobrara River and the lower eight miles of Verdigre Creek, between Ft. Randall Dam and Running Water in 1991. In the eastern reach the "Big Muddy" is vast, spectacular and unique, flowing fast past chalk bluffs, some as high as 100 feet. The river valley is as wide as two miles in some places, a testament to the twists and turns the river has taken over the last several thousand years. Islands, bars, and chutes attest to the

riverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dynamic character. The river in the western reach is more than 20 feet deep, with thick groves of willow and cottonwood trees growing on numerous islands and sandbars. Limestone bluffs rise 250 feet over the untamed river. The main channel twists and turns in gnarled braids from one shore to the other, and the river flows slower, sometimes as slow as a lazy two miles per hour. Native floodplain forests, tall and mixed grass prairie remnants, and the rivers and tributaries themselves provide habitat for several endangered and threatened bird and fish species.

Fishing and Hunting

Walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, and catfish are popular catches. In season hunters take geese, ducks, quail, turkeys, pheasants, and deer. Licenses required.

Most visitors come to the Missouri National Recreational River for its refreshing water and premier boating, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. You can also camp, tour powerhouses and historic sites, birdwatch, trace the Lewis and Clark Expedition, visit a fish hatchery and aquarium, and explore quiet trails.

Various oppor tunities exist to explore the Lewis and Clark saga, with the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center at Gavins Point Dam providing a par ticularly useful introduction to the story. The visitor

More than 175 fishing lakes, ranging in size up to 29,000 acres, make southeast South Dakota a fisherman's paradise. With three major rivers, the Big Sioux, the James and the Missouri River, coursing through this region, the youngest to the oldest can go home with a whopper of a fish story. Walleye and bass compete for top honors. Lewis and Clark Lake, above the Gavins Point Dam, draws anglers from across the nation with its alluring combination of largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing piers for those with accessibility needs are located at Lake Herman, Walkers Point, Newton Hills, Lake Vermillion, Lake Alvin, Lewis & Clark and Springfield Recreation Area. These piers offer low railings, accessible ramps, sidewalks and nearby parking areas. South Dakota fishing waters, excluding tribal trust land, hold a free weekend of fishing each year. Join in the fun on May 19-21, 2017 and enjoy a weekend of fishing on us. The entrance fees in all South Dakota Parks are waved this weekend as well. Our fishing season never closes, so your annual fishing license is good year-round. A Hunter’s Paradise

Stop on any country road in Southeast South Dakota and you’ll be stopping in a hunter’s paradise. South Dakota’s state bird, the Chinese Ringnecked Pheasant, thrives in the excellent habitat provided by the South Dakota landscape. Thousands of hunters descend upon the Southeast Region of the state in the fall for their chance at the wily pheasant. Hotels and restaurants gear up for the season with special menus and friendly people to make your stay enjoyable. Hunting is a year-round spor t in southeast South Dakota. Though pheasant and deer are the most popular, hunters will find a wide variety of abundant game.

Pheasant

Traditional season: Mid-Oct. to early Jan. Season Opens October 21, 2017. Preserve season: Sept. through March. Range and Habitat: Although pheasants are found statewide, the main pheasant range encompasses the eastern two-thirds of the state. Pheasants prefer agricultural fields, wooded draws, tree strips, wetlands and set-aside acres. Most of South Dakota is privately owned and permission is required to hunt, but public lands such as Game Production Areas and Walk-In Areas offer choice habitat for pheasants. Early in the season, pheasants are scattered in small flocks, but winter’s fury pushes birds into heavy cover and concentrates them. Tree strips, cattail sloughs and dense weed patches hold pheasants this time of year. Search for small, out-ofthe-way pockets that may have escaped the hunting pressure of large groups. Small sloughs, plum thickets or even fence line vegetation hold pheasants. Prepare for weather. Fall weather conditions range from 70 degrees to snow and below-zero wind chills.

East River Deer

Traditional Season: Firearm, mid-late Nov. thru early Dec. Archery, late Sept. thru mid-Jan. Range and Habitat: Crops such as corn, oats, wheat, sunflowers and soybeans attract the whitetail deer population. Mule deer hunting is limited to counties bordering the Missouri River. Rolling pastures, tree strips, river bottoms and cattail sloughs provide escape cover for the deer. Licenses are issued through an application process.

Ducks

Traditional Season: Late Sept. to Dec. Range and Habitat: More than 15 million ducks migrate annually through South Dakota. They include mallards, gadwall, pintails and teal. Along the Missouri River, the migration peaks in mid-Nov. with 600,000 ducks, primarily mallards.

Geese

Traditional Season: Sept. to Dec. Range and Habitat: The Missouri River corridor is the main route for more than 400,000 migrating Canada geese, and eastern South Dakota attracts 350,000 snow- and blue-geese migrants.

Prairie Turkey

Traditional Season: Spring firearm and archery, mid-April to midMay. Fall prairie turkey, early Oct. through Jan. Range and Habitat: Turkeys prefer the woods and brushy hillsides of rivers, as well as tree belts. Licenses are issued through an application process.

Hunting on Public & Private Lands

South Dakota has over 5 million acres of hunting oppor tunity on public and private land that has been leased for public hunting. Public lands available for hunting include: • Game Production Areas: Managed for the production and maintenance of all wildlife species. Although species emphasis varies from site to site, all wildlife benefits. • Waterfowl Production Areas: Managed for the production of waterfowl, but other game and nongame species thrive on them as well. Keep in mind several public lands require nontoxic shot for all shotgun hunting of small game. Public lands may have specific restrictions. Private lands open for hunting include: • Walk-In Areas: Privately owned lands, operating as working farms and ranches. They are leased for public hunting access by the South Dakota Depar tment of Game, Fish and Parks. No fur ther permission from landowners is needed to hunt these areas. No driving is allowed on Walk-In Areas except on designated trails and parking areas. • Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP): Open year round to public hunting and fishing access. • Controlled Hunting Access Program (CHAP): Privately owned lands, operated as working farms and ranches, leased for public

hunting access by the South Dakota Depar tment of Game, Fish and Parks primarily for big game hunting. Hunters using a CHAP area must complete the required check in registration slip and drop it in the self-service box. The fact remains that the vast majority of the state is land held in private ownership. Permission is required to hunt private land in South Dakota. Your ability to develop a connection with private landowners will enhance your hunting oppor tunities. However, if you are unfamiliar with the area, hiring a local hunting guide can be well wor th the investment.
