Governed under a groundbreaking structure of musician leadership, the Society presents concerts at venues throughout the Chicago area that cover the full spectrum of symphonic music. The Society’s orchestra, known simply as the Chicago Philharmonic, has been called “one of the country’s finest symphonic orchestras,” according to the Chicago Tribune. The philharmonic, under the direction of Scott Speck will be joined in performance by A Salute to the Rat Pack: Frank, Dean, and Sammy. of what can result when two talented individuals who share the same gene pool expand their horizons, combine their talents and create an inspired sound that stands apart and wholly on its own. With 10 albums to their credit, spawned over the course of 23 years, it’s clear their band isn’t simply a sideline that supplements their day jobs. Rather, it’s an ongoing effort that’s been accompanied by commitment and creativity. Kevin is an award-winning actor with a lengthy film, stage and television resume and Michael is an Emmy-winning composer, who honed his craft as a songwriter in Nashville in the 70’s. When the two pool their talents as The Bacon Brothers, the music rings with a resilience all its own. In their 10th album, ‘The Way We Love,’ is a series of songs that explore intimate relationships with the people and ideals that become a source of both purpose and passion. Released last summer, the album includes two tracks recorded live at Sony Hall in New York City.

in Between – A Celebration of Orchestral Music” Now in its 21st season, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director David Anderson and Concertmaster Lisa Gauslow, boasts talented musicians from southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The orchestra has performed repertoire such as Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, as well as nine Beethoven symphonies over nine seasons. For its Sundays at 4 appearance, the LGSO performs a number of lively and timeless favorites, featuring works by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Richard Rodgers, John Williams, and more. The Ferro Pavilion will be filled with the sounds of Broadway, film, television, and popular music. Sunday, Sept. 26, 4 p.m. Susan Marie Frontczak – “Erma Bombeck - By Your Side” Storyteller Frontczak celebrates one of the 20th century’s most prolific writers and humorists in this one-woman presentation. For more than 25 years, Frontczak has brought literature and history to life as a scholar, playwright, and performer through over 800 presentations as Marie Curie, Mary Shelley, Irene Castle, Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Erma Bombeck

throughout the U.S. and abroad. As a teen, Frontczak competed with her mother to see which of them could snag the monthly Good Housekeeping magazine in order to be the first to read Bombeck’s column. “The hardest part of presenting as Erma

Bombeck is choosing what to include from a seemingly endless supply of priceless material,” Frontczak said. “It is a puzzle I’m glad to take on as none of her other characters have given me so much to laugh at along the way.”

Local dealer catches wave of strong demand by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

Kunes has long had a presence in automotive sales and service in Wisconsin and Illinois, and now has numerous RV dealerships that sell and service a wide selection of RVs, trailers and campers. Coming off a great year for the industry as a whole, Scott Remer, general manager of Kunes RV of Elkhorn, said sales aren’t quite at the level they were last year but are solid nonetheless. “Things are going really well. We’re not quite as busy as last year but we are on pace and see it being this way well into this year,” he said. Remer said the revitalization the

pandemic brought to the camping industry is still prevalent. “It’s a new lifestyle because of COVID, which again taught people how much fun it can be, the great times with family it offers and the traveling that comes along with it,” he said. Remer, who has been in the industry for 25-plus years, said he doesn’t see things leveling off for some time. “Camping is continuing to grow and campgrounds are exploding. Plus, families that go RV-ing or camping pass the enjoyment and passion along to the next generation and so it carries on. Our hope is that it continues to be that way and we think it will,” Remer said.

Buying an RV can be an overwhelming task, and one of the easiest mistakes to make is to show up at a dealership and start shopping without doing a little homework, according to a blog on Kunes’ RV website. “Sure, this may be fun, but you’ll quickly realize that there are hundreds of different makes and models… add to that the everincreasing number of floor plans available in each model and your options are literally limitless,” it states. In an effort to make the shopping part easier on customers, the blog shares a list of the main types of RVs and a brief summary about each type. • Class A motorhome – resembles a bus with a flat, vertical front, measuring between 30 and 40 feet in length and recognized as top of the line; • Class B motorhome – known as the “van camper,” an RV built on a van chassis with the roof raised. Although small, it has a bathroom, stove, sink, mini-fridge and bed (that often doubles as a dinette during the day); • Class C motorhome – instantly recognizable as the RV is built on a truck chassis and the cab covered by an overhang. TYPES OF RVS

• Fifth wheel – can stretch in size from 25 to 45 feet with numerous options and floor plans. Offers the most spacious “living area” for its size; • Travel trailer – the No. 1 selling RV type in the history of the industry, ranging in size from 10 to 35 feet, can be towed by a vehicle most people already have. Considered by some as an apartment on wheels; • Pop-up trailer – also known as a tent trailer or fold-down camper, it encompasses the novelty of tent camping with the conveniences of an RV and features beds in slide-outs, a table (that often collapses to another bed), a small kitchen and there are many upgrades available; • Truck camper – mounted on the bed of a pick-up truck so compact yet spacious with the conveniences of a toilet, shower and cooking facilities. Also allows the option of towing a small boat or trailer at the same time; • Park models are also worth mentioning – a compromise between a house and an RV, these units are typically placed on rented, leased or purchased sites in campgrounds, RV resorts, etc. They often come standard with sliding patio doors, residential cabinets, full size appliances, a washer and dryer. They’re also bigger inside with 8-foot ceilings, and usually have better insulation and energy efficiency.

Many camping devotees say having a travel trailer creates great opportunities to celebrate family togetherness. MATTHEW OSBORN/UNSPLASH Spirit of Geneva Lakes

The RV dealership can be accessed from downtown Elkhorn and those traveling on I-43 can exit at Highway 67. Kunes makes an effort to not only serve its customers – with their automotive and RV needs – but also serve the communities where the company has dealerships, according to management. “Our mission is of course to deliver

exceptional customer service, but also to serve our communities well in the form of projects, promotions support, donations and wherever else is needed,” the website states. Ribfest celebrates great food, summer fun

in

by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

mid July the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn will be alive with the sounds of music, the aroma of barbecue

permeating the air, and the happy sounds of visitors winding their way through the Fairgrounds. Ribfest which grew to 80,000 participants during the four-day event in 2019, before being put on hold in 2020 because of the pandemic, was the largest barbecue event held in Wisconsin, according to Larry Gaffey, Walworth County Fairgrounds, General Manager. As they plan the 2021 Ribfest, set for Thursday, July 15 through Sunday, July 18, there is hope that the number of visitors will again be as large as the 2019

fest or will surpass it. Parking and entry to the event is free. “In addition to being a fun festival for the community, Ribfest is also a barbecue competition, which brings in some of the best barbecue from around the country,” Gaffey said. “There is a rib competition under the direction of the Kansas City Barbeque Society, which is responsible for judging to exact standards.” The Kansas City Barbeque Society is the sanctioning body of many barbecue events and its judges are trained to rate barbecue according to the highest standards. Their judges receive training

through a special school assuring fairness in standards for all competitors. In addition to the professional competition there are also People’s Choice Awards and on Sunday the community division heats up its grills and smokers at 9 a.m. Judging will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with awards given at 5 p.m. on the Main Stage. The community division will include local grillers putting forth their best efforts. They must be registered in advance and each year the registration fills up early.

Where the eating is good A visit to Ribfest is a day of non-stop eating. While ribs may be the most soughtafter of the barbecue items, there is also chicken barbecued on the grill, barbecue beef – including brisket – pulled pork sandwiches and a variety of other tasty foods waiting to be enjoyed. The professional barbecue competition brings in prominent names in barbecue smoking and grilling from throughout the Midwest to compete for the title of the best barbecue. Popular participants include

ADVICE FOR WANNABE PITMASTERS To help amateur pitmasters make their best barbecue, we asked Donna Rice of Desperados to offer a few tips. The Desperados team has won many awards for its barbecue throughout the country and finished second at Elkhorn Ribfest in 2019. Here are Donna’s suggestions: 1. Start with good quality meat. 2. Season the meat to your liking. 3. Order a good quality barbecue sauce to use later. She recommends ordering Desperado’s sauce online. Their sauce is free of salt and MSG. 4. Smoke at a low temperature as needed for the meat that is being cooked. She recommends 12-14 hours for whole brisket or 3-4 hours for ribs. 5. Smoke using mesquite or hickory. For more sweetness choose apple wood or cherry. 6. After smoking wrap in foil and allow it to rest in a warm spot. This allows the meat to stabilize and retains juices. 7. Place barbecue sauce on ribs and place on grill to finish. 8. Remove from grill, relax, and enjoy. Add additional sauce of your choice if you wish.

A hungry crowd gathers at Ribfest in Elkhorn each July. The event has continued to grow each year and is now a four-day event that draws competitors from a wide area along with people of all ages for live music, an artisan village and of course, plenty of food and drink options. 2019 first-place winner Aussom Aussie, of Pittsburgh, and second-place winner, Desperados BBQ, from Hinkley, Ohio. Other participants come from Virginia, Texas and Minnesota along with local participants from Oak Creek, Woodstock, Illinois, and Chicago offering a variety of barbecue styles. For Donna Rice, owner of Desperados, summertime is barbecue competition time as her team travels to festivals throughout the country. Their slogan is “Lick My Ribs,” and their ribs are a favorite among competition attendees. Desperados bring two smokers to cook their ribs. One holds 1,400 pounds while the smaller one holds 700 pounds of meat. “We keep them smoking all day,” Rice said. The traditional fair foods – hamburgers, hot dogs, corndogs, roasted corn on the cob, popcorn, and ice cream – are also found on site. Finding room to enjoy many of treats requires proper pacing throughout the day and continuing to walk through the fairgrounds to build up an appetite. It’s hard to imagine going to an event like this without some kettle corn to nibble on as one meanders through all the displays of food and other items available. And the favorite dessert items at any summer event are the funnel cake, that sweet and tasty treat that we equate with outdoor festivals.

Vendors on display Ribfest is not just about food. Take a walk down the Artisan Vendor Alley and view and purchase special homemade products. All the items up for sale must be created by the vendor selling them to participate in the vendor alley. The lineup features a variety of art and objects. Be sure to stop and watch Arcy, a mural artist who attends Ribfest each year and while there displays his talents. He paints his massive 8 foot-by-12 foot

murals and they are auctioned off in September at the Walworth County Fair. His subjects fit in well with the theme of Ribfest. He has created murals relative to the theme of the event. These include cows, pigs and sheep; often a close-up of the animal that has it looking directly out of the mural locking eyes with the observer. Another mural features a child with his swirled soft serve ice cream with a look of profound pleasure as he enjoys his ice cream treat. The fairgrounds is a great place to enjoy any time but it is especially so

Ribfest is a family event with something to appeal to everyone. The children and those who are children at heart will enjoy time on the carnival rides from those geared to the very young to the more exciting rides that teenagers and adults enjoy. Carnival rides are often the highlight of the fest for children. It does not take them long to lead mom and dad over to the ticket booth. It will only be with promises of even better activities that the children will be pulled away from the carnival rides and atmosphere. While eating, shopping, the artisan colony, enjoying the carnival rides, and possibly, eating again are the activities of the day, it is the sound of music heard throughout the grounds that adds to the festive spirit, according to Gaffey.

From the start of Ribfest until the closing on Sunday, a full schedule of live music will be heard from two stages. Each day has a new lineup of musical groups popular in the area. The lineup changes daily and this year includes groups such as 7th Heaven, House of Music, Dueling Pianos, Cherry Pie and many others. Nashville recording artist Kelly Daniels is scheduled to perform on Thursday. Check the Ribfest website for the full music lineup. “Bring a chair if you can as seating is limited,” said Gaffey. “However, if you don’t bring a chair, we do provide some unique seating for you and your family to sit and eat and enjoy the music. These seats are large bales of hay which can be moved to wherever one wishes to sit.” After spending the day enjoying all the activities, it’s time to sit back on a chair or hay bale and enjoy the music and a cold beer or two. Ribfest will be open on Thursday, July 15, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 16 and 17 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit their website at wwwwisconsinribfest.com for up to the minute information about daily entertainment schedules. during Ribfest. The festival is spread out throughout the grounds to take advantage of both the sunny areas and the wooded areas where shade can be enjoyed on a hot day. “We use the whole fairgrounds to allow everyone to spread out and enjoy the beauty of the grounds,” said Gaffey. “Camping is also allowed on the grounds but a reservation is needed and space for campers is limited.”

Lighting Celebration up the

Black Bull Fireworks opens two area superstores by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

For Timothy and DeAnna Delimat, owners of Black Bull Fireworks, it’s no secret that the weeks leading up to Independence Day are the busiest times of the year for their business. With everyone planning their annual July 4 bash, the need to pick up the latest in fireworks brings customers in to check out their old favorites and possibly add some new fireworks to their display. The Delimats who have been in the fireworks business for more than 20 years have seen their business grow each year. They now have two superstores – one in Delavan located at 1741 Geneva Road and the other in Salem at 32135 Geneva Road. “These stores are fully stocked and carry a variety of different fireworks for you to make your display unique,” Deanna Delimat said. “This year we also have three temporary locations. These are in Lake Geneva, Genoa City, and Burlington, which will make shopping for fireworks

more convenient for those who live in these areas.” According to Delimat, this year there is a huge fireworks shortage. Last year with families remaining isolated at home due to the pandemic and many public fireworks displays canceled, more individuals purchased fireworks to display for their family’s enjoyment. Most fireworks are manufactured and shipped from China and as with other products, the pandemic has caused a delay in production and also in shipments. Many stores ran out of fireworks last year as more people were buying their own displays. Unfortunately, many stores waited too long to reorder and have had difficulty receiving their orders once they finally tried to order new supplies. “Our stores are fully stocked. There is no shortage for us as we have been ordering regularly all through the year, not waiting until the last minute to replace what has been sold,” Delimat said.

A long history

It may be surprising to learn that fireworks have been a part of the Independence Day celebration since the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. At the time of the signing John Adams was said to have

written to his wife Sarah saying that he felt this day should be celebrated by succeeding generations as a great anniversary festival. It did not take long for his wishes to be granted. On July 4, 1777, Philadelphia was recognized as holding the first party recognizing the signing of the Declaration of Independence. On that first anniversary they reported “Illuminations, bells, a parade, and explosives filled the air. A 13gun salute honored each of the original 13 colonies, a military band performed, bells rang out and 13 fireworks rockets were set off in the town square.” Other communities followed and soon the entire country lit up with parades, fireworks and parties to commemorate Independence Day, a practice that has continued through the years. While the fireworks set off in the early days were not the beautiful colorful displays that we see today. They were basically gunpowder without color. Today through chemistry, colors are created with the addition of metallic salts. How the colors are arranged in the gunpowder and the strength of the charge cause the display to create a beautiful pattern as the colors are released.

The choices abound

Today any of the Black Bull Fireworks megastores offers a dizzying number of different pyrotechnic possibilities. There are, according to Delimat, more than 300

different varieties to choose from in the store. “Our customers come from throughout the southern Wisconsin area and many also come in from Illinois where fireworks are not able to be purchased,” said Delimat. “Here in Wisconsin anyone over the age of 18 years may purchase fireworks.” The majority of their customers, according to Delimat, are in the late 30s to mid-40s. They generally spend approximately $100 for a good display. “On the high end we have had customers

spend as much as $35,000 for a massive display. This massive display will be shot from a barge over the lake. With massive amounts of pyrotechnics being displayed being in the middle of a large lake, there is plenty of water if needed.” If it is your first visit to Black Bull Fireworks, you will likely be overwhelmed by the shelves of fireworks from the floor to the ceiling around the walls of the building and row after row of shelves throughout the store, of fireworks. The variety of the fireworks may make

it difficult for a first-time buyer to choose what is appropriate. The selection includes 500-gram aerial repeaters, rockets, candles, assortment packages, fountains, sparklers and many more choices. Since many of the fireworks are sold in a package with a variety of different fireworks, one of these pre-packaged varieties may be a good first purchase.

Finding the right items

Many people come in to purchase fireworks but really don’t know what they want. The store’s staff can steer most customers in the right direction. It is also possible to check out the fireworks before purchasing by looking at the flat screens located throughout the store. These screens display different fireworks as they look when exploded. This will make it easier to decide if that is what is best for the display envisioned. Do you like the shapes and colors that will light up the sky? If not continue looking down the aisle and find one more to your liking. “We carry a variety of fireworks to meet the needs of our customers,” Delimat added. “Each customer must choose the ones appropriate for their needs. Be sure to take advantage of our special buy 1 get 2 free.” Aerial fireworks come in a variety of sizes. One of the most popular and easy to use to put on an aerial show is the larger size 500-gram cakes, according to Delimat. This is a multi-shot firework in which preloaded tubes are arranged and fused internally to set off multiple displays. They may contain as few as 8 separate shots or more impressively as many as 200 creating a sky spectacle. At Black Bull many of the traditional items are available. Sparklers have been a favorite of children for many years. But be aware they do get very hot and can cause burns. Careful handling is important.

People often feel these are appropriate for children but the children do need to be supervised when holding them.

Safety concerns

When using fireworks at home safety must be the first concern. The National Safety Council recommends that if fireworks are legal where you live, be sure to follow these safety tips to stay free from accidental injury. Children should never be allowed to use fireworks unsupervised by an adult, nor should they be allowed to light fireworks or to stand too closely to them to avoid injury to them. Nor should drug- or alcoholimpaired individuals be the ones to ignite fireworks. Always have a hose or large bucket of water handy. The Safety Council also recommends that if there is a misfire or the fireworks fail to ignite, there should not be a second attempt to set it off. After the fireworks have died out, they recommend placing them in water to be certain they do not ignite again. While the beauty of pyrotechnic displays is enjoyed on Independence Day, they are not the only time they are enjoyed. Throughout the summer they are often seen at sports events, large picnics, and town festivals. At Christmas time they also light up the sky and who could imagine New Year’s Eve without fireworks to welcome in the New Year. The two Black Bull Fireworks megastores, located at 1741 Geneva Rd., Delavan and 32135 Geneva Rd., Salem, will remain open until Labor Day. They will reopen at Christmas time for a period of about one week to allow for purchase of displays for the holiday season. The three tents in Lake Geneva, Genoa City, and Burlington will remain open through July 4. Check out Black Bull Fireworks online at www.blackbullfireworks. com for current hours. They may be reached by phone at 414-349-2463.

So what is legal in Wisconsin? With the Fourth of July weekend upon us, here is a summary of Wisconsin fireworks law:

Legal without a permit: State law allows the sale, possession and use, without a permit, of sparklers not exceeding 36 inches in length, stationary cones and fountains, toy snakes, smoke bombs, caps, noisemakers and confetti poppers with less than quarter grain of explosive mixture. There is no age restriction on sale, possession or use of these devices and the statute does not classify them as fireworks. The use and sale of some of these items may be prohibited by local ordinances.

Illegal without a permit: Possessing or using any other fireworks, including, for example, firecrackers, roman candles, bottle rockets and mortars, is illegal in Wisconsin without a valid permit. A commonly used rule of thumb is that a permit is required if the device explodes or leaves the ground. The sale of these fireworks to a person without a valid permit is also illegal, unless the seller is a wholesaler. Permits must be obtained from the municipality where the fireworks will be used. These restrictions apply to the state law. Some materials described as legal according to state law may be prohibited by a local ordinance.

If you are looking for fireworks, it is hard to miss this sign for Black Bull Fireworks at 32135 Geneva Rd. (Highway 50) in Salem. The “superstore” offers large stock of pyrotechnic displays and is one of several locations in the area. SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes

JULY 2021

For your pedaling pleasure Geneva Lakes Area offers great trail, road and mountain biking options With some of the best bike trails in the state and plenty of little-traveled rustic and rural roads dotting the countryside, the Southern Lakes area provides the perfect landscape for our pedaling pleasure. And with the pandemic creating a renewed interest in outdoor activities there’s now plenty of reason to celebrate from the saddle of your favorite road, trail or hybrid bicycle. Cycling is not only healthy, it is liberating in every sense of the word. The open air, with the sights and sounds of nature combine to bring a relaxing, revujenating experience that is simply second-to-none! For today’s cyclists, the cycling industry has evolved to a point where there’s virtually a bike for everyone. Riders simply need to decide what style of biking best fits their desires and go from there. A word of caution though: A proper fit (bike size) is essential and you should rely on a professional to guide you in this basic decision.

Trails abound here

Wisconsin is likely one of the most riderfriendly states in the union. Recognized as the nation’s leader in “rails-to-trails” conversions, more miles of former railroad beds have been transformed for use by bicyclists in Wisconsin than any other state. Ask anyone whose ridden along these Wisconsin conversion trails and you’ll learn that they’re scenic, feature minimal grades with motorized traffic prohibited, provide a smooth ride and a safe, uncongested alternative for families, novices and experts looking to bike off the road.

White River Trail

Locally, one the most well known trails is the White River State Trail. A 12mile crushed limestone trail, it follows a former railroad bed and connects the City of Elkhorn to Burlington, also passing through the historic villages of Lyons and Springfield in the process. The trail also extends east from Highway 142 in Burlington to Kansasville and can be accessed from the Burlington High School/ Gateway Technical College campus. The trail requires an affordable daily or annual state trail pass, for those 16 and over, which can be purchased in any of several points along the path, including the communities it touches. Maps of the trail are also readily available at these points as well as online. Scenic views of farmland, wetlands,

waterways and the natural countryside are part of it’s charm and it’s many access points give riders a wide choice of options in how far and where they want to ride along the trail. These access points also provide convenient places to park.

Pedal & Cup

There is a great access point to the White River Trail located just off Highway 120 in Springfield. The Pedal & Cup, a bike rental shop and cafe is in Springfield’s historic railroad depot, 1722 N. Highway 120 Springfield (262-249-1111), is just five minutes north of Lake Geneva. They not only rent bikes, but also serve gourmet coffees, smoothies, ice cream and cold drinks. There are also biking and souvenir shirts and handcrafted gifts inside the historic depot. Check out their web site at www.pedalandcup.com. You can also find them on Facebook-search: pedal and cup. The Pedal & Cup is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Seven Waters Trail

Another rails to trails project, the Seven Waters Trail, took several shorter trails and consolidated them under one name once they formed a continuous route. This trail runs from Riverside Park in Burlington up through Waterford, the Town of Norway,

into Wind Lake and further on into Muskego. Just across the Wisconsin/Illinois border in Richmond, Illinois, riders will find the McHenry County Prairie Trail that stretches 26 miles from the Wisconsin State Line to Algonquin, Illinois. The Prairie Trail follows the former Chicago and Northwestern rail line that ran from Kane County into Wisconsin. From this trail, users have access to over 100 miles of trail network including the Hebron Trail, the Fox River Trail, the Great Western Trail and the Illinois Prairie Path. There are several points of interest along the Prairie Trail including the crown jewel of the district, Glacial Park, a 3,200-acre site and home to the Lost Valley Visitor Center. The natural area contains prairie, savanna, marshes, a bog, Nippersink Creek and a variety of geologic wonders, including kames. There are also other parks and rest stops along the way.

distance and difficulty to their particular ability level or time constraints. Unlike the mildly graded “rail-to-trail” paths, these loops feature steep, gear-grinding uphill sections, fast, twisting descents and lots of rough surface terrain. The loops are one-way for the sake of safety and to accommodate a smooth flow of traffic, even on days with a generous number of bikers on the trail. The trail offers amenities such as water, flush toilets and an indoor shelter. The Emma Carlin Trail, which connects via a two-way connector trail halfway around the John Muir Trail on the Green loop, is more remote. Offering three loops ranging in length from 2 to 4 miles, the Carlin Trail is not for the faint-of-heart or inexperienced, all three loops featuring difficult single track sections and rocky, rooted trail surfaces on the slopes. A dedicated group known as the Southern Kettle Moraine Chapter of IMBA (SKMCI) is a strong advocate for the building of new mountain bikes trails in the area. You can find more information at http://southernkettles.org.

Mountain bike Mecca

Riders seeking mountain biking opportunities, also have an extensive system of trails available to them in Wisconsin. In our area of the state, the John Muir trail system connecting the John Muir trail with the Emma Carlin trail is one of the region’s top mountain biking destinations. Both located in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest in Walworth County, the Muir trail is over 27 miles consisting of five one-way loops that let riders mix and match

The open road

With so many trail-riding options in our immediate area, many cyclists still enjoy riding on the road. The outstanding rustic roads and scenic routes in our area lend themselves well to this endeavor. Riding along any of the area’s lakeshores, or taking the chance to tour from one town to a

neighboring one and visiting it’s local shops and sights can be a particularly rewarding way to spend the day. Here, local chambers of commerce, visitor’s bureaus, maps and the Internet can provide information and ideas for great places to bike. The Stateline route travels along the Illinois/Wisconsin border, the south Kenosha county route takes back roads from Pleasant Prairie to Trevor, the Silver Lake route travels from Liberty corners, past Camp Lake, Silver Lake, Powers Lake and into Lake Geneva. There is a north Kenosha county route that travels through the Bong Recreation area into Burlington and routes that run from Burlington up into Rochester, Waterford, Tichigan and Wind Lake. One of the best known is the Wisconsin Bikeway which follows Highway C from I-94 to near Twin Lakes, then passes through Trevor, Wilmot, Twin Lakes and Genoa City all the way to Lake Geneva. Several enjoyable rides can be made from East Troy to Elkhorn and onward to Delavan or Lake Geneva as well. A map of roads in the City of Lake Geneva with recommended routes for bikers to enjoy is also readily available online and is known as the City of Lake Geneva Bike Trails.
