A copper-fastened great concept in Allihies
THE Allihies Copper Mine Museum celebrates the unique copper mining story which unfolded in Allihies throughout the 19th Century. The concept of a Mine Museum in Allihies took hold in the early 1990s and over a 10 year period it gradually took shape. With a lot of perseverance and determination it was realised and officially opened in 2007.
It continues to grow today and create links with many parts of this country as well as overseas, with direct links to Cornwall, South Wales, Galicia in Northern Spain, and Montana and Colorado in the United States.

The Museum is housed in the renovated Methodist
Church which was built in 1845 for the Cornish Miners who came to Allihies during the 1800s and caters for all levels of interest from the curious child to the specialist enthusiast.
In the Museum, the geology, history and geography of this unique area is demonstrated through artefacts, models, multimedia and a small library.
The Museum is at the core of the business and in July 2022, it achieved full accreditation with the Heritage Council of Ireland on the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland.
This places Allihies Copper Mine Museum on a par with any museum in the country. What has been created is a
Green Dot - Irish Design Makers
multi-purpose Community Heritage Centre. Around the Museum, a café, art gallery, a sensory garden and the latest addition, a Coastal Education Hub, have all been developed. The café is a busy and vibrant place where people meet and chat or just admire the views. Hanging on the walls are beautiful paintings, part of the many exhibitions run throughout the year. The space can be transformed into a concert venue capable of holding 100 people. The most recent performers were Scullion who played at the Museum for the second time.
