Power & Precision The new Black Bay Ceramic from TUDOR is an excellent reflection of the brand’s technical expertise.

32_Watches.indd 32

2021/08/24 06:23

/ WATCH FEATURE /

T

UDOR recently launched the Black Bay Ceramic, a piece that genuinely combines contemporary aesthetic and high-tech details with the brand’s rich heritage. The timepiece is a welcome addition to almost seven decades of diving watches as smooth functioning meets a modern look in this exquisite timepiece.

THE AESTHETIC

This striking timepiece comes with a matte black ceramic case with sand-blasted surfaces and bevelled edges. A mirror polish creates a striking contrast, while pronounced lines give it a contemporary and elegant aesthetic. The insert of the rotatable bezel is also black ceramic and comes with a sunray satin finish. The rotor in black tungsten monobloc is openwork and satin-brushed with sand-blasted details, and its bridges and mainplate have alternate sand-blasted, polished surfaces and laser decorations.

THE DESIGN

The Black Bay Ceramic is built with the precision TUDOR is known for and designed to ensure optimal durability and robustness. Its variable inertia balance is maintained by a sturdy traversing bridge with a two-point fixing. Together with its

non-magnetic silicon hairspring, the Manufacture Calibre MT5602-1U can function within a tolerance range of 5 seconds (0 +5). One of the piece’s signature features is its ‘weekend-proof’ power reserve — it has been certified for 70 hours by METAS, which means you can take the watch off on a Friday evening and put it back on again on Monday morning without having to wind it.

THE FUNCTION

The Black Bay Ceramic is waterproof to 200 metres and ensures smooth functioning when exposed to a magnetic field of 15 000 gauss and precision following exposure. It has certification by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) for precision at two temperatures, in six different positions and at two different levels of power reserve: 100% and 33%.

THE HERITAGE

A nod to TUDOR’s heritage, the Black Bay Ceramic has angular ‘snowflake’ hands, which first appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalogue. This subtle inclusion of a traditional element blends beautifully with the watch’s otherwise contemporary and high-tech aesthetic. The conception is neo-vintage, while the manufacturing techniques, reliability and precision are very much in line with modern standards.

MEET CLAIRE GUNN

In love with beauty

Cape Town-based creative Claire Gunn has a serious passion for art. And we are obsessed with her unending talent. JENNIFER CAMPBELL

F

rom watercolour paintings to food and portrait photography, Claire Gunn creates a diverse and rich body of work. In fact, she feels as though she embodies multiple artists as such a broad range of subjects inspires her. A creative through-and-through, Claire uses art as a daily practice to explore her world. With a love for visual storytelling, she uses her work to explore the abstract and philosophical elements of the human experience. She paints things that spark joy for her — from landscapes and cityscapes to portraits and street scenes. The result is a collection of work that engages with a broad range of subjects. "I go through stages where I have to paint the ocean and pastel clouds, and then I am immediately urged to draw a bright red pattern with cranes and tiny perfect line details while dreaming of painting mountains at sunrise or still lake waters," she says. "I think I have ten artists occupying my consciousness that all want a piece of the physical action on Earth, which is exactly why my art can come across as being

from different artists." For Claire, art provides a real sense of pleasure. "What inspires me is escapism into what keeps us in a space of joy, so we don't get sucked down into the waves of despair that may cause a downward spiral if we take this life and its challenges too seriously," she says. "Lighten up. Art helps." Her home in Durbanville also serves as a source of inspiration for much of her work. She can create while surrounded by hills and vineyards that change with the seasons — these seasonal shifts influence her work and the visual stories she creates. Claire works in various mediums and creates illustrations, drawings and paintings in both watercolour and acrylic. She also creates digital paintings, as well as fine art photography. The work that she identifies with most is her collection of urban sketches that depict Italian cities and towns — the pieces are beautifully detailed and rich in colour. The collection was inspired by her obsession with Italy and her fond memories of her trip a few years ago. www.clairegunn.com

Celebrate green spaces 17 October is Garden Day, the perfect time to appreciate the joy that green spaces provide.

Visit www.gardenday.co.za to find a handy toolkit that includes recipes, downloadable invitations, and things to do and make with children in the garden.

DESPITE THE CHALLENGES of the last year or so, or perhaps because of them, a widespread interest in conscious living and connecting with nature is gaining traction. With so much time spent at home, more and more people are finding joy in their gardens. Now in its sixth year, Garden Day is a chance for people all over South Africa to celebrate their gardens and enjoy the therapeutic effects of the outdoors. Garden Day enthusiasts are already planning this year’s celebration — chef and home gardener Mogau Seshoene (also known as The Lazy Makoti) is a proud Garden Day ambassador and plans on wearing a flower crown to celebrate the day. She is joined by some of South Africa’s favourite flower and plant enthusiasts, including Babylonstoren’s floral designer Constance Stuurman and master gardener Gundula Deutschlander, floral designer Mabel M, entrepreneur Jo-Ann Strauss and actress and flower enthusiast Rolanda Marais.

Homespun at The Andros Spun from a love of exquisite food, home and imagination. THEA BECKMAN

I

f you live in the northern suburbs of Cape Town and are yet to experience the magic of Homespun by Matt, a stone’s throw from Blouberg beach, know this: you are doing yourself the gravest of disservices. Small in stature yet Olympian in gastronomy, Homespun is the restaurant you take the person you intend to marry or the in-laws you need to impress. It’s effortlessly and approachably gorgeous, from the impeccably plated food to the rustic and homely interior. But within the culinary echelons of Cape Town, it’s hard to keep a good concept down. And so Homespun by Matt multiplied, officially blessing the Southern Suburbs – specifically, the luxurious Andros Boutique Hotel in Claremont, a venue newly open to the public – with its divine presence.

THE MATT BEHIND THE HOMESPUN

Like all the best stories, it started with serendipity. At just 12 years old, Matt Schreuder (accidentally) burned down the family’s Wendy house. As punishment, his father condemned him to work in the kitchen of his restaurant, where said punishment transformed into a passion for little Matt. Over the years, he worked his way up to manager and then beetled off to Europe, followed by Asia to pursue his culinary obsession. After soaking up the teachings of the Michelin-star kitchens in which he slogged, Matt returned home with a burning vision to open his own restaurant, the décor and menu of which would be a projection of his most creative imaginings. And, thus, Homespun by Matt was born in Blouberg.

42

/ RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT /

Six years later, Capetonians, sick of paying for an Uber ride to the northern burbs, demanded a sister restaurant. And in June 2021, she was born!

HOMESPUN 2.0: SAME-SAME BUT DIFFERENT

With the handsome and craggy countenance of Table Mountain as its backdrop, the five-star Andros Boutique Hotel is the home of the new Homespun by Matt. This means two things: (1) the transition between gorgeous Cape Dutch exterior (complete with manicured gardens and mountain vistas) and the warm, inviting interior is seamless, and (2) if you have a little too much wine, you have a perfectly sophisticated place to spend the night. The menu is a unique adaptation of European culinary techniques with accents of Asian, South African, and otherworldly flavours. And, of course, every dish is religiously homemade from scratch using fresh, local ingredients. Think beef tataki, goat’s cheese Caprese, pork belly pancakes, or jackfruit dumplings to start; crispy gammon, line fish with

42_Restaurant.indd 43

squid dukkha, yuzu, and leek creamies, or Matt’s special beef fillet for mains; and “not banana” passion fruit, banana, peanut and basil or “cry baby” strawberry chocolate vanilla desserts. These (and more) are available as a six-course symphony for R595 (R970 with wine pairing) or a three-course sonata for R475 (R750 with wine). For more than six years, Homespun has thrived as the living, breathing manifestation of chef Matt Schreuder’s most fervent dream to open his own restaurant. And now there are two. So, for truly exquisite fare served in an atmosphere so warm, inviting, and homey that you’d be forgiven for showing up in pyjamas, you know where your next treat meal needs to be! Homespun by Matt at the Andros Hotel in Claremont is open Monday to Saturday for breakfast; Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner; Saturday and Sunday for high tea. From Cape Town’s historic heart to Rosebank’s foodie hub and from an iconic address in Johannesburg to the middle of the Kalahari Desert: South Africa’s intrepid culinary heroes continue pioneering new, exciting restaurants all over the country for us to explore.

AND THEN THERE WAS FIRE

Within the Nirox Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind, you’ll discover a low-slung rustic pavilion with walls of naked wood, floors of sand, and a warm, strangely nostalgic ambience. It’s in this delicious paradox of primeval and sophistication that And Then There Was Fire is located, a woodfire grill and tapas café that employs the raw power of flame to create unforgettable food experiences. The restaurant seeks to reconnect the diner with nature and our origins as the first creatures to harness fire. Krugersdorp www.andthentherewasfire.com

But now, chef Luke Dale-Roberts’ famous Restaurant has released unto the world its progeny in the historic heart of Cape Town. The Test Kitchen Fledglings offers mentorship — the ultimate skills training opportunity for aspiring chefs — at affordable prices for diners and with the usual standards and service its parent restaurant was known for. RESTAURANT BÔUJEE

Located in the industrial-chic De Waterkant district of Cape Town, the new Restaurant Bôujee is giving the city’s stalwart sushi spots a thorough run for their money. The menu strikes a seductive balance between traditional and innovation, leaning heavily towards Japanese cuisine, but with international favourites to please all palates, like beef steak and roast vegetables, Norwegian salmon steak, and lobster tail salad. The décor is as delightful, colourful, and theatrical, bordering on the kind of eccentric you want to be best friends with. Cape Town De Waterkant www.restaurantboujee.co.za

t is not always the case that a home is designed and decorated from scratch to completion by a duo of architect and decorator colleagues for family friends, but this was the case here. And the result was a focused vision from a tight-knit team, which played an intrinsic role in creating the special atmosphere and aesthetic of this completed project in Durban. As the home is set on a steep site, within a verdant tropical landscape where summers are humid and hot and winters blissfully sunny and temperate, architect Lisa Rorich's objective was to provide solutions to the climatic challenges. Also, the key was meeting the owners' brief for a family space that combined a seamless contemporary open plan with more intimate areas, all of which should be rooted into the natural surroundings. Designing the way the owners wanted to live here on holiday was a key driver for the interiors. "The details, interest and information had to be in the architecture, the fixtures, wall features and furniture,” says decorator Robyn Constantinou. "The design of this was absolutely making sure those aspects did all the work." www.lisaroricharchitects.co.za

In the spare bedrooms, the brief was for quiet, natural tones. Decorator Robyn Constantinou used sand-coloured timber floors throughout with loose-laid coir matting and headboards upholstered in a lattice pattern to turn up the textural aspect. For even more sensory impact, swathes of mushroom coloured linen curtains (fabric from Mavromac) were used for privacy between the bathing and sleeping zones instead of doors (below right).

OF THE HOTTEST KITCHEN TRENDS Beauty meets function in this season’s top kitchen trends. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL THE KITCHEN IS a special place in any home — it’s often a place for family to gather, to prepare food, and to unwind after a long day. And as we continue to spend more time at home, more and more of us are finding ways to make our spaces look and feel more practical without compromising on beauty and comfort. We take a look at the season’s biggest décor trends for kitchens — from the most popular colour palettes and materials to lighting and functional elements.

DARK DRAMA

Dark shades like charcoal, grey and black were once reserved for accent walls or statement pieces, but these hues are now being used much more widely to achieve a dramatic look. Black works beautifully on cabinets, work surfaces and entire walls — the look is very luxurious but can easily be made more homely with wooden elements and a mix of textures.

DISPLAY ART

When it comes to personalising your kitchen, nothing beats carefully curated pieces that are meaningful to you. Open and floating shelves provide space for décor items and artworks to be displayed — a favourite painting, ceramics, and books can all work to achieve a look that’s unique to you, beautifully eclectic and individual. Choose items that are special to you or that spark nostalgia to give your kitchen a really lived-in feel.

AND THEN THERE WAS LIGHT

The right lighting can really elevate a space, and pendants are a great way to make a statement in any room. Pendant lights can be understated and minimal or grouped together for a more theatrical aesthetic. It’s also possible to find pendants that suit your particular style – from retro to elegant. In fact, pendant lights can act as a real focal point when they are cleverly selected and placed. They work particularly well over countertops where they are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

MIX MATERIALS

Materials are coming together in surprising ways – think of combinations of gold, marble and textures for a unique aesthetic. Strongly-veined marble is having a moment and works beautifully with luxe gold or a striking contrast with metal, wood and polished surfaces. In fact, when it comes to combining materials, it’s all about contrast – wood brings warmth to marble, for example, while brass and dark timber complement each other beautifully.

5

BE BRAVE WITH COLOUR

Monotone kitchens have had their moment, but this season sees colour being played in fun new ways. Incorporating wallpaper is a great way to inject colour into your kitchen, while floor tiles in warm tones are becoming more popular. More colourful backsplashes are also gaining traction, while green is the shade of choice for cabinets – take your pick from mint, sage, olive, emerald or hunter. Unexpected contrasts are a fun trend – choose hues from opposite sides of the colour wheel to really give this one a go.

6

UPDATE YOUR BACKSPLASH

When it comes to backsplash, square and textured tiles are proving most popular at the moment. Other shapes are also starting to emerge, along with larger and patterned tiles. While backsplash traditionally covered the area of wall between the countertops and the upper cabinets, many designers now favour a backsplash that covers the entire surface of a wall. Colourful glazes, reflective mirrors, and quirky designs can all be incorporated for a piece of the kitchen that’s both beautiful and functional.

Designed for living Inspired by a toddler’s mess, Baskiti specialises in clever storage. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

H

omeware brand Baskiti is a passion project inspired by time spent at home during last year’s national lockdown. It started small – with just one range of hanging storage baskets and has since expanded to include more handmade storage solutions that are simple and beautiful in their design.

A PERSONAL STORY

Baskiti is the brainchild of Jana Leonard, who was inspired to find an aesthetically pleasing and practical storage solution. Jana’s young son, Axel, who was only 14 months old at the time, insisted on using vegetables as balls, and she needed to find a way to keep her kitchen in order. “Originally, it was very funny, and we laughed it off. However, after a few days and many squishy potatoes, we knew there had to be a solution”. The word Baskiti loosely translates to ‘basket’ in Shona, the native language of the Leonards’ nanny Jacqueline, who is a special source of inspiration for Jana’s family. The

company began with a gorgeous range of handwoven hanging baskets designed to store produce and other household items — they work beautifully in various rooms around the home and help create more floor and counter space. Baskiti has since expanded to include several accessories, including wall hooks, planters, liners, toiletry bags, Christmas stockings and braai bags.

THE FOUNDER

Jana Leonard is a wife, mom, and entrepreneur passionate about mentoring and assisting small business owners. With a love for business and more than 10 years of PR experience, it comes as no surprise that she has channelled her energy and entrepreneurial spirit into Baskiti. She managed to launch the company without

any outside investment, and her first range of hanging baskets sold out within just a week. Son Axel, and daughter Miera, are the lights of her and her husband’s life, and she’s thrilled to have followed through with a business idea that has seen great successes.

WE LOVE

Baskiti’s new braai bags are a great addition to their extensive collection — they come in both leather and canvas. They are a beautiful (and practical) solution to storing essential braai tools. And when it comes to clever storage, you can’t beat the hanging storage baskets, which were the company’s original offering. They are woven with natural cane and reinforced with a solid weaving technique to support up to three kilograms of fruit, veggies or household items. Other great offerings include the hanging planter, designed for small indoor plants, and the new toiletry bag, which is made from soft and durable leather and comes with a waterproof liner. www.baskiti.co.za

The magic of serum

Lightweight but powerful, serums help to boost the condition of the skin. JENNIFER CAMPBELL

W

hen it comes to really getting results with your skincare routine, you’ll want to make sure that you’re incorporating a serum into your daily regime. Characteristically very lightweight, serums come in gel and liquid formulations and penetrate deeper into the skin than most other topical products do. But what are serums, exactly? And are they really worth the effort?

WHAT IS SERUM?

Serums are specially formulated to hydrate the skin and address some visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles. They are typically very light in texture and packed with high concentrations of active ingredients necessary for optimal hydration. Some of the most potent ingredients you’ll find in serums include antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, botanical agents and peptides, all of which benefit the overall look and feel of the skin.

THE BENEFITS OF SERUM

If you moisturise religiously, you might be wondering whether it’s essential that you use a serum as well. The reality is that serums pack a serious punch because they deliver highly concentrated doses of effective ingredients, which makes them an essential step in any skincare regime. While moisturisers form a protective barrier on top of the skin to prevent moisture from escaping, serums are much more lightweight and don’t actually lock in moisture. Instead, they effectively deliver active ingredients deep into the epidermis.

HOW TO USE SERUMS

Serums are best applied after you have completed your daily cleansing and toning routine. Because they are so highly concentrated, only a few drops need to be used to reap the benefits. Gently apply your serum of choice to your face, neck and decolletage. Once it has settled into the skin, you can apply your moisturiser as usual. When choosing the formula that is right for you, you’ll need to consider what your skincare needs are exactly. It’s possible to find products specially formulated for dehydrated skin and those that specifically target dullness, loss of volume, and the visible signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles.

WE LOVE / LOUIS VUITTON B BLOSSOM is the first jewellery collection by Francesca Amfitheatrof, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director for watches and jewellery. The new collection from Louis Vuitton, B Blossom, offers some unique and creative variations. A new interpretation of the monogram flower takes centre stage in a variety of pieces — from rings and collectable bangles to light pendants and earrings. The distinctive monogram flower connects all of the pieces in the B Blossom collection. It is enveloped in a medley of colour stones and features across a unique range of jewellery. The stones were all carefully selected for their cheerful tones, which work beautifully with a mix of materials, including yellow gold, white gold, white agate, diamonds and malachite. The B Blossom collection includes gorgeous rings, medallions, and open bangles. The light pendants encourage layering — think yellow and white gold, white agate, onyx, cornelian and opal. The sculptural curves and petals of the Louis Vuitton monogram add a timeless style to each piece, while skilfully set diamonds add a special radiance. www.louisvuitton.com

The perfect scent Discover a fragrance that’s just right for you.

F

inding your fragrance is a process, but when you discover yours, there’s nothing better than embracing your signature (or seasonal) scent. With so many great options available, it can be challenging to know exactly what to look for. A good starting point is to understand what you actually smell — all fragrances can be categorised according to the four main categories: fresh, floral, spicy, and woody. There are various sub-categories within each of these categories, which can be combined to create unique scents. If you’re in the mood for something new, read on to discover the characteristics of each olfactive family, as well as our top picks, newly released, for the season.

KNOW YOUR SCENT

Floral fragrances are among the most feminine and romantic scents. Fresh scents typically include citrus notes like lemon and grapefruit but are also aromatic notes, such as basil and lavender. Popular notes include rose, jasmine and violet. Spicy scents are great for the winter months and often have notes of leather, warm spices, vanilla and tobacco. Woody fragrances are associated with notes like cedar, patchouli and vetiver.

THE GREEN LIFE Nourish yourself with plant-based goodness. PHOTOGRAPHY: SAMANTHA LOWE

The plant-based food trend is still going strong, and as it continues to grow in popularity, it evolves to become more accessible to a larger market. And while it’s possible to eat a varied and delicious plant-based diet, it’s much more than a treat for the tastebuds. In fact, there are loads of health benefits associated with plant-based. A well-balanced plant-based diet is generally rich in nutrients because it’s made up of whole grains, vegetables, nuts, beans, seeds and fruits. A plant-based diet also tends to be high in fibre, which is great for digestive health. And besides the health benefits, plant-based food is also associated with reduced carbon emissions, less water usage, and the conservation of animal and plant habitats if produced sustainably. Local foodie Mira Weiner has put together some gorgeous recipes — whether you’re new to a plant-based diet or already in love with the lifestyle, we’re sure you’ll enjoy these tasty meals.

2 + ¼ cup chickpea flour 2 + ¾ cup water 1,5 cups mixed grated veg (I used carrots and baby marrows with any excess water drained) ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped ¼ cup spring onions, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp dried vegetable stock 1 tsp dried mixed herbs Generous pinch of salt and pepper Chili flakes (optional)

Ingredients for the pea pesto

1,5 cups McCain frozen peas, blanched ½ cup lemon juice (I like my pesto super lemony but if you aren’t a big fan of lemon reduce to 1/3 cup) ½ cup basil leaves ¼ cup mint leaves 1 garlic clove 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp nutritional yeast Generous pinch of sea salt or Pink Himalayan salt

Method

1. Grease a 20cmx30cm container (a glass Pyrex dish works well) with olive oil. Sift the chickpea flour into a pot, slowly add the water mixing continuously so the batter doesn’t lump together, you want a smooth light batter. Then add the remaining ingredients and combine well. 2. Place the pot on a low heat and continuously whisk the mixture while it thickens. It should become a stiff dry mix like polenta or pap. Immediately pour into the greased dish, this needs to be done quickly or the mixture will set. Smooth the surface of the mixture with a spatula and allow to cool. Once cool, refrigerate for up to 2 hours. 3. To make the pea pesto, combine all the ingredients in a food processor or Nutribullet and pulse. If you prefer a thick chunky pesto don’t over blend and if you want a creamy green sauce then blend for longer. 4. Once the chickpea mix has set, remove from the fridge and gently slide out of the container. Slice into desired shapes and place into the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer. Select Air Fry on high (204C) and cook for 12 minutes or until crispy. 5. Serve the fries hot with the pea pesto dipping sauce and enjoy!

Method

1. In a bowl mix together the marinade for the tofu and place the tofu slices into the marinade while you make the rest of the dish. This can also be made in advance and refrigerated overnight. 2. Place the radishes into a bowl with a pinch of salt and a dash of apple cider vinegar to make a quick pickle. 3. Make the sauce by blending all the ingredients together in a food processor or Nutribullet until smooth. 4. Place the marinated tofu into the Air Fryer (I use the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air fryer combo – it’s my new husband and my favourite kitchen appliance). Leave gaps in between each piece and cook for 6 minutes on high (204C). The Air Fryer will beep half way through, at the 3 minute mark and you can turn the tofu over. 5. Place the water, red onions, garlic and dried vegetable stock into the Instant Pot. Then place the rice noodles into the pot so they’re on top of the onions and garlic but submerged in the liquid. Press the pressure cooker function on the Instant Pot and select 1 minute (it only needs to cook for 30 seconds). 6. Once the Instant Pot has completed 30 seconds of cooking, you can stop it and allow the steam to release. Immediately remove the lid. Add the carrot and zucchini noodles on top of the rice noodles and place the lid back on for a few minutes, so the vegetable noodles are lightly steamed. 7. Place the rice noodles and vegetable noodles into a bowl, top with the tofu steaks, pickled radish, spring onions, black sesame seeds and drizzle the almond butter sauce on top. Serve immediately!

Something for every season From a silky Shiraz to crisp whites and a sensual Port-style wine, there’s a sip for every style. EMILE JOUBERT

I

’ve always found Shiraz to be an unpredictable wine, but when it’s well-done, it can certainly turn out beautifully. A lovely Shiraz was delivered recently from the pretty Kleinood Estate near Waterford, where the Helderberg takes over Stellenboschberg. Granite makes the wine here — those mounds of decomposed rock chiselled from the mountains for over 80 million years. Shiraz has found a certain expression at Kleinood, whose John Spicer Syrah from

1 100_Wine.indd 100

the comet 2015 vintage is a wine delivered with politeness and received with immense gratitude. In the cellar, the wine ferments at 26.5ºC for 14 days, with surging wet pump-overs. This gives it a balanced extraction for that sweet spot between tannic power from skins and energetic juicy freshness. Then it all goes to wood: 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels – 15% first, 35% second and 50% third fill. In the glass, the nose is a potpourri of spring fynbos flowers, sun-baked Algerian prunes with an intriguing whiff of the sweet smell given by

2021/08/24 08:00

/ FOOD & WINE /

a 36 month-aged ibérico ham. I smelt wine, then Shiraz, and it is good. Interestingly, it is the texture that reaches me before flavour. The wine is silky, not showy. Its presence is evocative and polite, and here lie the flavours of what Shiraz does when its best personality comes to the fore. Dark, dense berries provide an edge of sweetness, nothing tart. Cardamom from Zanzibar and good old white pepper, as used by Louis Leipoldt in his South African kitchen, give an exotic air but are weighed down by the good stuff: the succulence of plums, heavy and ripe and fallen from the tree; mulberries, sticky and colourful and stain-inducing; dried pomegranate pips, slightly sharp before the bright fruit takes over. It caresses and seduces the drinker. Talk cool and wine, and one can’t be blamed for thinking of things white. Suave Sauvignon Blanc. Churlish, cocky Chardonnay. Calm-weighted Chenin Blanc. And yes, many great white wines are cool, although it is a character not exclusive to these wines of a lighter shade and lower drinking temperature. A current example of such a cool white that passed my lips of late is the 2020 Chardonnay from Hamilton Russell Vineyards, a producer that is itself the embodiment of cool. Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2020 resulted from a wet 2019 winter, with over 800mm of rain. The 2020 summer was cool, with pre-harvest temperatures of December, January and February maxing out at 25°C. Harvested end-February, the grapes were taken to the cellar where winemaker Emul Ross managed their growing from infantile raw fruit to one of those complete wines made from the great grape that is Chardonnay. The wine spent nine months in tight-grain French wood, a selection of fills one to four. On the nose, the wine offers fresh Cape lemon peel, loquat and dew-damp sage with a slight hit of fennel. Of course, the approach and attack on the palate is balletic in grace and elegance, presenting an initial cocky citrussy zest and sherbet-tainted exuberance. This year’s winter was cold rather than cool. I was directed, therefore, to the fine

offerings of South Africa’s range of Port-style wines. Top was the Quinta do Sul Port-style wine, a number only made in special years and is waited for with revered anticipation by the – unfortunately dwindling – number of those appreciative of this style of wine. Quinta do Sul 2020 was made from 100% Tinta Roriz grapes – also known as Tempranillo – one of the traditional Douro Port varieties. The vineyard grows in Prins Albert in the Karoo, so the necessary ripening requirements of sun and warmth are there, limitlessly, and this ideal geography is complemented by the region’s pristine Champagne-pure air in the isolated Karoo. This fortified wine has a truly sensual attack on the palate. The sweet loveliness of it all is crystal in its clarity, without a hint of the cloying or syrupiness that all too many persons assume to be present in wines subjected to fortification. Warming the palate instantaneously, the display of flavours lifts the spirit of the one having the

3

privilege to drink this. There are familiar red wine aspects, like the almost-sour brush of tannin and the agreeable swipe of dry herbs on the mid-palate. They raise the wine, giving freshness and perk. Allowing the senses to stay awake during the rest of what is going on here. The flavours are gorgeous and delicious. The thick juicy black fruit of the aroma carries through on the palate, synching the soul of the drinker with the heartbeats of the Tinta Roriz grapes. A thimble of white pepper is sensed, joining the wine’s succulent, eloquent sweetness in brilliant harmony. Being fortified and strong, the power is not harnessed. There is an excitement in drinking a fine vintage Port, or Port-style wine, such as Quinta do Sul, the liquor refusing to rest sleepily on the palate. Instead, it entices, seduces and alarms the senses, giving shudders of being enthralled and amazed by a beautifully big monster of a wine. The sight of the winter was a pleasure to behold.

LA MOTTE 2017 MCC

SOUTH AFRICA’S NEW VINTAGE OF WINES HAS BURST UPON THE MARKET LIKE AN ATLANTIC OCEAN WAVE SWEEPING ONTO THE SHORE, WITH FRESH FLAVOURS AND AROMAS TO ACCOMPANY ANY AND EVERY MEAL AND OCCASION. AND HERE IS JUST A SMALL SAMPLING OF SOME OF THE MANY NEW WINES WE CANNOT WAIT TO INDULGE IN.

For the past three years, the La Motte 2017 Méthode Cap Classique has lain brooding in the cool, dark cellars of this Franschhoek estate. Now, finally, this bone-dry Chardonnay and Pinot Noir MCC is unveiled, ready for enjoyment with a wide variety of, particularly, South African foods, from local cheeses to oysters, crayfish, pastries, and more. The MCC exhibits a natural perceived sweetness owing to its lengthy languish on the lees, and a delightful bouquet of citrus, brioche, and nuts, wrapped in the creamy embrace of a fine mousse. LORD'S 2021 SAUVIGNON BLANC

SURVIVOR SYRAH 2019

Hailing from the Breede River Winelands, this refreshing latest vintage from Lord's Winery stranded in sweet isolation high up in the McGregor Mountains — delivers everything you want from a summertime Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh tropical fruit flavours comingle with lush, lingering grassy notes, and the integration of acid and fruit: satisfyingly seamless. This balance is attributed to the grapes handpicked in two batches: 33% at a lower ripeness for a solid acid structure and the remaining 66% at optimum ripeness for those sexy full, fruit flavours and svelte body.

Launched in 2017 by the Overhex Winery, the Survivor Syrah is one of a range of minimal-intervention, wild yeast-fermented wines from low-yielding vineyard blocks in the water-stressed Swartland region. The 2019 Syrah is brooding and lusciously complex with heady spice and flavourful hues of blackberries and violets, which are rounded off beautifully by soft tannins and oak. As for pairings, think roast lamb, barbecued chicken, spicy stir-fry pork, or a bad day in the office.

SAURWEIN ‘NOM’ PINOT NOIR 2020

LAARMAN ‘CLUSTER SERIES’ PINOT GRIS 2021

If it’s got “Saurwein” written on the bottle, you can bet good money that the wine inside it will totally distract you from the date sitting across the table from you (even if they are ridiculously good-looking). Known affectionately as the “Queen of Pinot Noir”, winemaker Jessica Saurwein has a special talent for coaxing out the most nuanced yet multitudinous layers of flavours and aromas from a grape that is considered, by many winemakers, to be a total pain in the butt. This fact is exquisitely obvious on the palate of the ‘Nom’ Pinot Noir, which is elegant and wellbalanced with a bounty of red and black cherry, umami, and roasted chestnuts.

The ‘Cluster Series’ from Laarman Wines is made from grapes sourced from cherry-picked vineyards in a range of unique terroirs. Like paint and canvas, this gives winemaker Arco Laarman the freedom to create the art he wants, which is exactly what he’s done with the most recent ‘ Cluster Series’ addition: the 2021 Pinot Gris. With a flavour profile of lime, lemon, pear, nectarine, and apple — one that walks a tightrope between Sauvignon Blanc and a Chenin Blanc — this wine twinkles a lovely bright green hue in the glass and finishes with an almost salt-style minerality.

REX EQUUS PIONEER’S BLEND 2019

JOURNEY’S END ‘HAYSTACK’ CHARDONNAY 2019

Perdeberg Cellar is celebrating 80 years in the winemaking industry, and at the helm of their celebrations is the launch of a limited-edition Bordeaux-style blend, Rex Equus’ Pioneer’s Blend’ 2019. Perched on the foothills of the Paardeberg Mountain in a notoriously sun-punished terroir, Perdeberg is known to deliver wines with great fruit intensity and quality, and the new, sumptuously rich ‘Pioneer’s Blend’ is no different, with its bouquet of dark fruit and dried spices and delightful hints of cherries and vanilla.

Journey’s End Vineyards has sired a new brood of wines, which they’re calling the ‘Tales Series’ because if there’s anything better than wine, it’s wine enjoyed with a story. The ‘Haystack’ Chardonnay 2019, which is named after the age-old practice of planting wheat between the rows of vines to prevent weeds from growing, yields pronounced citrus peel, lime, and melon notes on the nose and palate and a lovely richness and complexity thanks to four months post-fermentation lees contact. This balance of freshness and creaminess makes this chardonnay a versatile food pairing wine.

TOKARA BLANC DE BLANCS 2013 Crafted from chardonnay grapes from the estate's outstanding cool climate vineyard in Elgin, the Tokara Blanc de Blanc 2013 returns home from France with a Double Gold medal and a smashing 93/100 points from the annual Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge. This Méthode Cap Classique boasts an extraordinary depth of flavour, elegance, and complexity, having spent seven years on the lees in the bottle. On the nose, aromas of lightly toasted almonds, lemon preserve, and fresh green apple are buoyed by super fine and relentless bubbles, supporting a rich palate of freshly-baked gougère (cheese pastry). MEET JESSICA SAURWEIN

The Queen of Pinot Noir Saurwein Wines have recently moved to a polyculture farm in Stanford called Waterval. Jessica and her family are planning a regenerative agricultural farming project, including establishing a small vineyard.

FOLLOW JESSICA

to keep updated with the process @JessicaSaurwein

IT’S NO COINCIDENCE that Jessica Saurwein has ‘wine’ in her surname. Born of a lineage of winemaking families who, in the 1700s, quite literally made wine for the Emperor of Austria, it is only fitting and just that she pursued a career as a winemaker. But what Jessica does with grape varietals like Riesling and Pinot Noir is closer to alchemy than winemaking. She has a talent and a tenderness for working with these notoriously finicky grapes (for the Western Cape). And the result is a repertoire of wines of such an exquisite calibre that the city’s finest restaurants have adorned their wine lists with her creations. “It is my aim to achieve energy and harmony simultaneously in the wines. The handsoff winemaking approach allows me to be guided by the natural balance of the grapes. Overall, the grapes are worked very gently, if at all, and the use of cooling down the must and ferments where needed enables the wines to be an optimal and most complex expression of all nuances of the terroir.” Jessica’s crowning achievements are the succulent, earthy Saurwein “Nom” Pinot Noir and elegant, perfumed Saurwein “Chi” Riesling. Made from grapes sourced from Elandskloof and Elgin, both wines have performed spectacularly since their maiden vintages, giving Jessica Saurwein the unofficial yet much-deserved title of Queen of Pinot Noir. And this year, with the release of the “Om” Pinot Noir 2020, I believe that sentiment has been more than reinforced. This “Om” Pinot Noir originates from dryland vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, one of South Africa’s finest terroirs, and offers a totally different, though no-less compelling expression of this noble grape to its sister “Nom” Pinot Noir. The fact that Jessica can use her profound understanding of vine and vineyard to craft such distinct wines with minimal intervention is testament to her savant-like skills as a winemaker. And we’re here for it!

ADVERTORIAL

FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE Toyota Fortuner

More Luxury, More Style, More Features

AD TEMPLATE.indd Aspire TOYOTA Spring116 2021.indd All Pages

2021/08/24 06:04

WITHOUT FEAR OF OVERSTATEMENT, the Toyota Fortuner is one SUV that definitely needs no introduction – it has firmly entrenched itself in the local marketplace and has been a runaway success since its inception way back in 2006. Now in its second generation, the 7-seat Fortuner continues to offer the perfect blend of styling, versatility, off-road prowess and practicality.

NEW FLAGSHIP GRADE

While a two-tier grade strategy (entry and mid) has been in place since introduction, changing market requirements have led to the introduction of a new ‘range-topper’ in the form of the new 2.8 GD-6 VX. The VX suffix is employed on Toyota’s other SUV ranges (RAV4, Prado and Land Cruiser 200) and denotes the highest specification level on offer.

EXTERIOR STYLING

The design team focused on retaining the characteristic profile of Fortuner while accentuating and refreshing the façade. At the front a larger, blacked-out grille with wave-like mesh pattern (gloss finish on VX) is accompanied by a silver-accented "skid-plate" underrun for a tougher, more integrated look. Re-profiled Bi-LED headlamps provide a sleeker look and these are further enhanced by prominent chrome accent strips that bridge the grille and headlamp assemblies. The Bi-LED headlamps now feature striking scalloped DRL light guides and are joined by LED fog lamps and strip-like LED turnsignal elements in the lower bumper. At night, these strip lights double as additional puddle lighting. On the VX-grade, the side profile is enhanced with a thin, chrome belt-line that extends towards the rear, effectively wrapping around the vehicle, and complementing the other chrome detailing. New tail lamp units with integrated light guides, help deliver a more striking night-time signature.

Aspire TOYOTA Spring 2021.indd 117

A roof spoiler and Fortuner-emblazoned centre garnish complete the rear view. The overall result is a sleeker, more premium presentation while retaining the rugged curb-appeal that Fortuner is renowned for.

INTERIOR STYLING

One of the key change points, is the shift to a black interior, in line with market requests. The previously employed brown-leather interior has been replaced by sophisticated black ‘hide’ with silver contrast stitching. High-brightness treatment has also been applied to the accent areas of the interior, resulting in a more premium atmosphere both visually and tactility. A new instrument cluster design has been employed with metallic-blue dial faces, white needle pointers and a simple, elegant font – complementing the blue interior lighting. These are augmented by an expanded, centrally-mounted MultiInformation Display.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

The mechanicals have not been forgotten, as the output of the 2.8 GD-6 engine has been boosted by 20kW to 150kW, with an additional 50Nm on offer, bringing the figure to 500Nm. Toyota engineers have improved performance and fuel economy simultanouesly by adopting a larger, heavy-duty turbocharger with a ball-bearing cartridge for exceptionally crisp and strong throttle response, and a new common-rail injection system with a higher maximum fuel pressure of 250 MPa. Fuel economy also benefits from a new combustion chamber that reduces cooling losses and more efficient exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in the intake manifold. A water-cooled double-pipe pre-cooler results in optimum EGR gas temperature. The fuel index ranges from 6.8 to 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (depending on engine and drivetrain configuration).

The six-speed automatic transmission in turn has been recalibrated to allow earlier lockup for improved acceleration and cooling performance, especially while towing.

WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE

All Fortuner models come with a 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. A 9-services/ 90 000 km service plan is standard on all models (service intervals of 10 000 km or 12-months). Customers can also purchase extended service plans and warranty packages via their Toyota dealer.

CLOUD 9 BOUTIQUE HOTEL & SPA CAPE TOWN

In the heart of the city's trendy Tamboerskloof, Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel is where our journey begins. Despite being a Mother City resident for a decade, I'd never ventured through the doors, and akin to Alice in Wonderland, a journey was awaiting. The hotel itself is an accumulation of five historic properties, joined together through tasteful architecture and a tropical courtyard serving as the connecting space between them. Although the hotel has 54 rooms, you'd never say it as they're discreetly tucked away in the wings of the various buildings. Rather than following the rabbit down a warren hole at Cloud 9, it's upwards to go for the real adventure; perhaps the hotel's most unique selling point is the various levels of the rooftop decks, including two pools with views: winding their way higher and higher until, almost literally, in the clouds with 360-degree views of Table Mountain and the city. Across all levels, the Mountain Club serves tantalizing tapas and a host of drinks. www.hotelcloudnine.com

Noah House may be one of the newest additions to the Cape Town boutique scene, but the graceful and elegant Victorian home feels as though it has been around for ages. Technically it is dated 1860, but its rebirth as a guest house and café is barely a year old. Ten select suites offer luxurious sleeping options with crisp, clean, and classy décor. Dutch owners Gerald and Sarina van Engelen are the handsome couple behind the Noah hospitality, having purchased and transformed Noah into its current shape during the lockdown last year. What’s more, the outside veranda serves as a quiet and minimalist chic café – a favoured hideout with discerning café-goers – particularly with vegan, sugarfree, and gluten-free options available. The next stop on our tour is an iconic South African hotel, serving as a luxurious sanctuary in the city of Johannesburg. From the moment you arrive at the colossal front gate and then drive through the manicured gardens, you can’t help breathing in an air of distinction. The hotel’s front paints an impressive picture with stately columns that tower over the pool and gardens. As a dedicated patron of the arts, expect to find a treasure trove of African art once you enter the doors. Sitting on the private veranda of my suite, I couldn’t help but imagine the slow but graceful steps of Nelson Mandela walking through the trees with a working manuscript of Long Walk To Freedom underarm. Madiba was a friend of the Steyns, the owners of the Saxon, and spent time in residence at the hotel during the writing of his memoir. The pandemic afforded The Saxon time for a few renovations; there’s a refreshed foyer – but the real focus goes to Qunu Restaurant. THE MANOR HOUSE AT FANCOURT GARDEN ROUTE

If you think that the prestigious Fancourt is only about golf, you’d be wrong. I discovered recently that in a private garden enclave in the sprawling estate hides a luxury hotel stay second to none. The Manor House was the home of the property’s founder Henry Fancourt White, and over a century later, sensitive renovations have turned the home into a five-star getaway. The lush gardens provide a somewhat tropical setting for the hotel, inviting you out of the luxury of your room to a green haven or the central pool courtyard around which the rooms are arranged. There are a series of outdoor spaces interspersed through the garden, and the staff are more than happy to set them up for an alfresco secret-garden dining experience. Of course, since you are staying on a world-famous golf course, why not play one of the three courses - a privilege reserved only for club members – or in this convenient exception – guests of the hotel. www.manorhouse.fancourt.co.za

MARATABA MOUNTAIN LODGE THABAZIMBI

Thankfully in South Africa, boutique also takes shape in the bush. Our last foray into significant small stays is Marataba Mountain Lodge. Part of a privately managed section of the Marakele National Park, 3h30 from Johannesburg, the More Family Collection has two luxury lodges. Mountain Lodge is the smaller of the two, featuring only five suites. Part of Marataba’s lure is that the lodges are the only two in the property, giving a more exclusive feel. In addition to the pristine Highveld bush, the reserve is also home to impressive mountains and a perennial river. This union of mountains, plains, and waterways make for a varied and unforgettable safari experience. Mountain Lodge is eco-friendly and has been constructed to be as light on the environment as possible while embracing a more modern Scandi-style architecture, with the mountain-side suites angled to fully take in the views of the valley below. www.more.co.za/marataba

ess than an hour from Cape Town, the Huguenot Tunnel swallows you up, and several kilometres later, spits you out into a seemingly new world – surrounded by towering fold mountains and fynbos-iced hills. I've always continued straight through until one day I took a left turn to explore a valley with a curious name – the Slanghoek Valley. Three visits later and the valley has crept firmly into my favourites folder. I've selected three unique offerings, all doubling up as gourmet food and wine experiences for you to consider for your next staycation itinerary.

INTIMATE COOKING EXPERIENCES AT PICARDI PLACE

Our first stop is minutes outside of the small town of Rawsonville, where charming owner Jaco Brand welcomes guests to his Picardi Place. After a decade's work as a landscape designer in Cape Town, the 2008 recession saw him move to a smallholding he'd purchased in Rawsonville years earlier. While exploring what to do next, he visited Italy. A pasta-making course and a visit to a market for fresh produce awakened a love for Italian cuisine – and the realisation that there was a gap in the market for such experiences back home. Returning to South Africa, he began permaculture, setting up impressive vegetable gardens at Picardi Place. A decade later, Jaco has run over 600 cooking courses and is still as passionate as ever. Experiences begin with coffee and an introduction to the property. Next is a wine tasting of local offerings – usually presented by the winemaker. And then it's off to the gardens to harvest produce for the course. The magic begins in the kitchen, where no machines are used; everything is handmade. Lastly, a table is prepared in a secret spot on the farm to enjoy the fruits of the day's labour. It's a five-hour experience from R800pp - or even better as an overnight stay with accommodation offered through rooms in the main farmhouse or the freestanding cottage with its oversized hot tub. The farm also serves as a beautiful venue for weddings and small functions. www.picardiplace.co.za

CABIN COMFORT AT OPSTAL

Time to drive further into the Slanghoek Valley itself, a ten-minute drive from Picardi Place, is Opstal, a seventh-generation family-run estate with a history dating back to 1847. High up on the slopes of the mountain, five cabins rise from out of the fynbos. Three of them as two-bedroom, and two as onebedroom units. Each has its braai area set on expansive verandas, and of course, woodfired hot tubs offer warmth on cold winter nights and comfort on cooler summer nights. If your ideal country escape includes a glass or two of wine, then don't forget that a stay at Opstal means you're in the heart of a working wine estate. The Opstal range includes enticing well-priced introductory wines but also more complex premium offerings. Winemaker Attie Louw told me he desired that people would say of Opstal that ''these guys love Chenin, and do Chenin well'' – and true to his word – the Carl Everson Chenin Blanc is a wine to be reckoned with. Be sure to also try the Cape White Blend – a Chenin, Roussanne, Sémillon, Viognier, and Colombar blend awarded 94 points by New World wine commentator Tim Atkins. www.opstal.co.za

VISIONARY DESIGN AT BOSJES

Driving through the gates, the BOSJES Chapel serves as the frontispiece of the property where visionary design meets soulinspired architecture. Inspired by Psalm 36:7 ''How precious, O God, is Your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of Your wings.'' The chapel's innovation and beauty have captured the heart and magazine pages around the world. The curved roof appears to float effortlessly midair like a giant sheet hovering in motion. Shrouded in glass and suspended above a shallow pond that effortlessly mirrors the chapel's seductive curves. The manicured gardens reach up the property from the chapel, taking in a labyrinth of visual and experiential offerings. The Spens Garden Café and Winkel are the newest developments and have already been the recipient of the revered international Architizer A+ Award.

As much as the gardens and architecture embody the BOSJES magic, a reason to stay over is in the evenings, a light show happens when the mountains that form the ever-present backdrop light up with the sunset. On our visit, the effect was even more dramatic with the sight of slivers of snow on the highest peaks. De Skuur at BOSJES is a converted barn that now houses five luxury suites around a central swimming pool – and conveniently has a spa alongside for well-deserved pampering. Make sure to include a meal at the Kombuis Restaurant, where visionary design continues into the finest of dining experiences. www.bosjes.co.za

SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP FIVE

Our round-up of courses that hit a hole-in-one with local and international golfing enthusiasts.

golf courses BY THEA BECKMAN

AS A COUNTRY internationally known for its staggeringly beautiful scenery – where imposing mountain ranges rear up from wave-battered coastlines, and open veldt sunsets are literal symphonies of fire – it’s little wonder that South Africa has become a popular destination for golfers. But it’s not only for the views that they flock to our shores: it’s the five-star accommodations and service; unforgettable cultural experiences; the spas, fine wines, and dining; and, most of all, our worldclass golf courses, the challenges set by their picturesque locations, and the golfing Gods who designed them. Here are some of our top golfing destinations.

George

In the world of golfing, Fancourt hardly needs an introduction. This premier lifestyle destination sprawls out over 600+ hectares of pristine countryside in the verdant heart of South Africa’s Garden Route, right in the lee of the Outeniqua Mountains. The Fancourt estate embraces three golf courses (Outeniqua, Montagu, and The Links) designed by golfing legend Gary Player, all of which are ranked in the Top 20 by Top 100 Courses. But of the three, The Links is the estate’s iconic hallmark, described by Gary Player as his greatest ever feat as a course designer: a sentiment confirmed by its current number one ranking in the country. www.fancourt.co.za

EVERY CAR MANUFACTURER known to man has a signature car. A model that everyone knows about, an instantly recognizable model. The Audi R8 is exactly that for the brand. A truly aspirational car. Or a “one day when I grow up” car. Audi’s signature supercar, the R8, first made an appearance back in 2006 at the Paris Auto Show. Today, 15 years later, we’re standing face to face with one of the most impressive supercar contenders out there. The latest rendition of the R8 is arguably its bestlooking model. Aesthetically sharper and more dynamic angles have been highlighted on the nose and the tail. 20-inch alloys lend further to the idea of the ultimate sports car.

The interior has undergone updates and upgrades as well. The Audi Virtual Cockpit with built-in MMI Navigation comes standard across the range. Another standard is the Bang & Olufsen sound system. The seats are surprisingly comfortable, nothing like those uncomfortable bucket seats usually spotted in supercars of this league. Packing a raucous V10, 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated motor, the R8 is loud and proud and oozes with confidence. Rightfully so! Delivering 449 kW and 560 N.m of torque, this quattro all-wheel drive does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.1 sec and hits a top speed of 331 km/h. R8 Spyder price tag comes in at a cool R3 592 500.

C CROSSOVER N U N D R U M BY MARIUS BOONZAIER

OWING TO THEIR ever-increasing popularity in South Africa, local manufacturers often introduce new compact SUVs to our market. As a result, choosing which one suits your lifestyle and pocket can become a strenuous task. To make this task easier, we recommend three compact SUVs, ranging from a more budgetfriendly offering to a premium-badged product. Since its introduction to South African shores, the Vitara Brezza has gained immense popularity in our market, thanks to its SUVlike styling and tall ride height (the Vitara Brezza boasts a ground clearance of 198 mm), a generous amount of standard specification and nippy driving characteristics. All models ship with an Apple CarPlay and Android Autoenabled 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control and a reverseview camera, the latter supplemented by rear parking sensors. Although the Vitara Brezza’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol motor offers only 77 kW and 138 N.m of torque, it’s an ample amount as the Suzuki weighs only 1 130 kg. And, thanks to the lightweight construction, the claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.2 L/100 km should be achievable. The pocket-friendly option, the Suzuki Vitara Brezza range, is priced from R244 900 for the entrylevel GL five-speed manual model to R309 900 for the GLX derivative equipped with a four-speed self-shifter. All models feature a four-year/60 000 km service plan and fiveyear/200 000 km warranty.

Slotting in between Mazda’s popular CX-3 and CX-5 offerings, the CX-30 is the third addition to the Japanese firm’s local CX line-up. Arguably one of the most stylish products in the segment, the CX30 is available with the choice of three trim levels, entry-level Active, mid-tier Dynamic and top-ofthe-line Individual. As standard, all models feature an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display, LED headlamps and seven airbags, among others. Mazda’s SkyActiv-G engine and six-speed automatic transmission are employed across the range. The naturally aspirated 2-litre four-cylinder produces 121 kW and 213 N.m. Mazda claims an average fuel consumption of 6.6 L/100 km. The three-strong CX-30 range is priced from R469 000 for the Active variant to R540 000 for the flagship derivative and is sold with a three-year/unlimited km service plan and a three-year/unlimited km warranty. The entry point to Audi’s Q range, the recently facelifted Q2 features bolder exterior design cues and an upgraded cabin which, in true Audi fashion, is minimalistic, well-built and brimming with tech. The local Q2 line-up comprises three derivatives: Standard, Advanced and S line, all sporting a 1.4-litre turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine. Now mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, the 35 TFSI-badged engine produces 110 kW and 250 N.m. Four equipment packages are on offer: Comfort, Technology Black styling and S line interior. Priced from R545 500 for the base model to R581 500 for the flagship variant, what you get for your money is an upmarket cabin and punchy yet frugal TFSI powertrain, all wrapped in a stylish exterior package. A five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and oneyear/unlimited km warranty are standard.

THE MAD WOMEN’S BALL

The prize-winning French bestseller by Victoria Mas is set in 1885 in a Paris asylum. It tells the story of Doctor Charcot and his displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad or hysterical but who are, in reality, often unwanted wives or strongwilled daughters. Once a year, a grand ball is held at the hospital, an event that is a social highlight for the Parisian elite and a rare moment of hope for the women themselves.
