In the Spice House – a custom-built greenhouse at Babylonstoren Wine Estate near Cape Town – master gardener Gundula Deutschländer and her team have created a verdant paradise dedicated to showcasing the many charms of spice-bearing plants.

It's just after 8 am at Babylonstoren, a destination wine and guest farm with a relatively new but already world-renowned garden. The estate is a short drive from central Cape Town, and there's bustle and activity everywhere this morning, as there always is on a working farm. It's autumn, and the first of the bountiful harvest of pumpkins is being picked and processed, destined for use in Babylonstoren's restaurants and via its farm shop, both in situ and online.
However, inside one of the garden team's latest projects – the Spice House – all is calm and quiet. As we await master gardener Gundula Deutschländer, there is some time to take in the details of the greenhouse itself: classic cast metal doors, opaque glass panels, a large slab of stone fashioned into a striking table with a central water runnel and edged with wooden benches; and a slatted wooden floor raised above a pool of water populated with fish that regularly swim up into the two glass tanks placed at either end of the wooden deck. It's pleasantly warm and humid, and the air is redolent with the subtle scents of humus-filled soil and the variety of lush tropical plants that fill the space.
Into this beautiful, tranquil space comes Gundula, who – rather like the contents of the greenhouse –glows with a gentle yet resilient energy. She is the epitome of the softly spoken gardener who exudes subtle strength. Having worked at Babylonstoren for 15 years as the farm's master gardener, Gundula has played a part in all of the estate's innovative gardening e orts, and the Spice House is the latest of these.
She explains that the project originated from creating a space on the farm that served as a reminder of the Cape of Good Hope's history as a place through which so many precious spices once passed from east to west. It's a way of paying tribute to the spices themselves and those who had "an obsession with everything exotic, from sugar to paper", as Gundula puts it. As the Western Cape has a dry, Mediterranean-style climate, doing this necessitated building a greenhouse for the spice plants, which are almost invariably subtropical or tropical in origin, requiring those same conditions to be replicated for them to thrive.
What's more, most of these plants, which range from black pepper to galangal, tamarind and cardamom, are far from easy to come by in South Africa. Gundula says some were found via connections at botanical gardens in Durban and other subtropical parts of the country, adding that her fellow Babylonstoren botanist, Ernst van Jaarsveld, was a great help. International suppliers had to be tapped, and a special journey to Zanzibar was involved to source plants.
In other words, like every beautiful garden, the Spice House has taken considerable e ort and quite a lot of time to create. As Gundula relates, it has taught those who tend to it all kinds of unexpected lessons.
Creating a unique and memorable experience for visitors to the farm is very much part of Babylonstoren's mission. "That's the magnificence of working here," Gundula says. "We are able, as our work, to share in such di erent ways. Not only visually, but also through giving people an experience they can make their own; much like creating a spiced infusion from freshly picked plants for somebody and sharing that."
Most of the gardens at Babylonstoren, by deliberate intent, grow only edible and
medicinal plants. The Spice House currently includes black pepper, chillies, vanilla, turmeric, ginger, galangal, tamarind, cacao, cardamom, bananas, papayas, curry leaves and a butterfly pea plant, but also features a sacred fig (Ficus religiosa) which has been grown from a cutting taken from the original and legendary tree under which the Buddha sat, as well as a plethora of ferns, some orchids, and bold clumps of epiphytic Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides).
Asked about the overall meaning of being a gardener, Gundula stresses that "over and again, it's a humbling experience, no matter what you do". She's one of the most knowledgeable and experienced gardeners in South Africa and works within a large team, but she recognises that much of the time, for many of us with an interest in plants, "gardening is an isolated, almost insular occupation, but you're continuously aware that you have the greater role beyond" – a role that is about being one of those who connect with and tend the earth. With her gentle smile breaking through once again, she says: "It's about giving yourself the time to be okay with being by yourself so you can also be okay with being out there."

Nestled in the heart of Franschhoek, amid the renowned culinary scene of the Cape Winelands, lies Franks Corner Bar and Grill, a refreshing addition that has quickly become the talk of the town. Spearheaded by American entrepreneur and proud Franschhoek resident Frank Rodriguez, in collaboration with acclaimed chef Reuben Riffel and seasoned hospitality expert Alex McCormack, Franks Corner offers a contemporary twist on modern American cuisine in a laid-back atmosphere. BY
LAUREN ZUIDEMAThe journey to Franks Corner began with Rodriguez's love for the valley, stemming from a holiday in 2006 that led to a permanent move. His dream of opening a restaurant finally materialised with the perfect location on Huguenot Street, setting the stage for a year-long renovation. The result is a welcoming space adorned with warm wooden floors, plush leather banquettes and bespoke furnishings, exuding a genuine sense of hospitality and comfort.
Simplicity reigns supreme, with a menu devoid of elaborate tasting menus or extravagant wine pairings. Instead, guests are treated to elevated yet approachable dishes that showcase the essence of American cuisine. Chef Reuben Ri el, alongside executive chef Aviv Liebenberg, presents a smorgasbord of ‘new-style American’ creations, drawing inspiration from the diverse culinary landscape of the USA.
Starters double as shareable small plates, o ering a tempting array of flavours, from the classic Corn Dog with homemade ketchup to the indulgent West Coast Mussels in a Creamy Wine Sauce. For mains, the spotlight shines on prime cuts of beef, expertly grilled to perfection in the kitchen's charcoal oven. At the same time, unconventional delights like the 'Nashville' Hot Chicken o er a spicy twist on Southern favourites.
What truly sets Franks Corner apart is the meticulous attention to detail evident in every aspect of the dining experience. From hand-cut, triple-cooked chips to house-made mayonnaise and pickles, each element is carefully crafted to enhance the overall flavour profile of the dish. Moreover,
the menu is thoughtfully designed to complement the selection of craft beers from the Franschhoek Beer Company, which take centre stage at the bar alongside a curated wine list.
In essence, Franks Corner Bar and Grill embodies the spirit of Franschhoek: a fusion of quality ingredients, warm hospitality and culinary innovation. Whether you're a local looking for a new favourite spot or a traveller seeking a taste of authentic American fare, Franks Corner invites you to indulge in a dining experience like no other.
Franks Corner Bar and Grill is located at 42 Huguenot Street, Franschhoek and offers an all-day menu from noon until 10pm daily.
A newly built holiday home in Deià, Mallorca, blends a meticulously thoughtful architectural approach with a sculptural interior that embodies effortless luxury.
The opportunity to build a completely new house in a village with a heritage as storied and well protected as that of Deià, Mallorca, doesn’t come around frequently. When it does, it’s to be hoped that owners and architects are an excellent match with one another; fortunately, this was the case when it came to the creation of this ethereally elegant holiday home. Involved from the very start of the project, Deià-based architecture firm More Design assisted the clients with everything, from selecting the piece of land on which their house was to be built, to curating the furnishings and artworks that
complete it. The result is something genuinely remarkable.
The property is situated right in the centre of Deià, making it a rare find; the plot comprises the last of the available land in the urban area above the world-renowned La Residencia Hotel. It also has an enviably elevated position and a western orientation, with views of the village church and, beyond that, the sea. It seems especially appropriate that this home sensitively honours the spirit of the place in which it is situated, combining serenity with a timeless feel. moredesign.es
The kitchen was designed and installed by More Design and its team of local artisans. It features local stone countertops, lime-plastered walls and custom-made elm wood cabinetry. Above the kitchen island hangs a bespoke brass and leather light fitting that mimics the surrounding architectural arches.
With walls plastered in tadelakt, a domed ceiling, perimeter downlights, an irregular stone step and matt copper taps, the master bathroom is a tactile and tranquil sanctuary. The carved stone basin is a bespoke design and is made from local Binissalem stone.
In the first of three interleading children’s bedrooms is an ingeniously designed bed – collaboratively created by More Design and More Decor – with an integrated dressing table attached to the back of the headboard.
The countertop is made from Rose Travertine marble, and the eye-catching chair is a More Decor vintage find.
The guest house bedroom features a wooden bedside pedestal made from reclaimed oak wood with brass details and a romantic canopy bed.
The bathroom includes a carved Binissalem stone basin that is a bespoke design from the Wave Collection by More Design. Tapware from the Henry range by Waterworks is complemented by a bespoke irregularly shaped mirror and brass towel rails.
A porch at the entrance to the guest house makes a convivial outdoor gathering place; the beautifully textured exterior of the building is made from reclaimed 16th century stone.
OPPOSITE PAGE
The pool area boasts a beautiful view over Deià towards the sea, taking in the iconic La Residencia Hotel, which is situated close by. A full 14 metres in length, the heated pool is ideal for swimming laps, and has been lined with dark green Java Bali green volcanic stone tiles. Its surround is made from local Binissalem stone, with rounded edges, and slightly hand-hammered for grip.
e don’t need any more fear, scarcity or division in society. Just turning on current news shows how prevalent this is, and we don’t need to perpetuate it. What is required is more heartled humaning; where empathy, compassion and love become commonplace. But leading our lives from our hearts is not what we are used to. In a society that values using our heads through the intellectual and logical processes of deductive reasoning embedded in traditional school systems, we tend first to grasp new concepts intellectually and logically. We value intellectual quotients (IQ) in our reasoning ability and emotional quotients (EQ) in how we manage our emotions, thinking this creates balance. In my opinion, this is a wobbly stool, and it is unstable on two legs. We need to bring soul quotient (SQ) from a heart space as the third leg to the stool to create a truly stable foundation for ourselves. Our inner authority, unconditional love, trusting ourselves, and intuition are key components of our SQ, and they come from our bodies and our hearts rather than our minds. The true intention behind our actions also emanates from our SQ. This is not a stated, logical intention we rationalise under social acceptability but rather an energetic one
that people pick up on, whether conscious or not. We sense this in the drivers bobbing and weaving frantically behind us in tra c or attuning to a person’s mood when they enter the room. And this kind of intent cannot be faked nor explained away with a well-constructed argument. Our energy never lies.
If we just rely on intellect or emotions, our minds are prone to conditioning as we have been brought up to value rational thought, logic and accepted norms, and our emotions can be prone to habitual patterning, trauma responses and societal expectations. Developing our SQ allows us to integrate and balance our growth and understand where ego and conditioning have played a role in our lives as we step into a more authentic and aligned path for ourselves. One that is more heart-led where we can hold empathy and compassion for ourselves and others. When we create an internal alignment for ourselves that is anchored from our heart to balance logic and emotion, we are less bu eted by whatever else is going on in the world and the external projections of others. When we are externally anchored in titles, comparisons, other opinions or societal conditioning, our energy can be easily scattered and thrown into scarcity and fear, as these are
all changeable constructs. When we lead from our minds, the need to control and create predictable outcomes steps in. We’re susceptible to our egos and conditioning, which can move us into less coherent emotions like anxiety. This often leads to frustration as we try to force outcomes to meet our expectations on our timelines. Very little is within our control, although we have been taught traditionally that we can ‘make things happen’, but this is often at the expense of our energy and health as we force our way through life.
The Heart Math Institute in the United States has found that the heart’s electrical field is 60 times greater in amplitude than that of the brain. The heart’s electrical activity is also found to be greater, with the heart sending more information to the brain than the brain transmits to the heart. This electrical field is a toroidal field that can create coherence for us through a unified energy between body, mind and soul. This is how we sense each other’s energy, whether conscious or not and how we feel resonant with or repulsed by another’s energy. When we are in a balanced emotion like love, joy, peace, gratitude or compassion, these are coherent, harmonious emotions, and then there is consistency and regularity in our energy.
Dr Rollin McCrathy, the Heart Math Institute Research Director, defined coherence as when the heart, mind and emotion are in energetic alignment and cooperation. It’s a state that builds resilience and we can better cope with any challenges in life. When we engage with judgement, comparison, fear or hate, often driven by ego, trauma and conditioning, our own field becomes incoherent and irregular, creating interference or static in our heart-rhythm patterns where our parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems are out of sync and not in flow. That can produce irrational heart rhythms and an incoherent state in our heart’s toroidal field, which impacts us and others we come in contact with. This generally creates more incoherence and resistance as we move further from our essence and step deeper into our ego. We need to bring our hearts back into the equation, become aware of our energy and move back into more coherence and harmony in our body, mind and soul. This allows us to stay in a state of positive equilibrium despite what is going on for us and around us. We can then come from a more balanced, heart-led intention and respond with empathy, compassion and love in the turbulent times we find ourselves in. And wouldn’t the world be a better place with more heart-led humaning?

To confess, the Karoo was always an unavoidable drive-through when the journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town had to be done by car. On one of these trips during the pandemic when flights were unavailable (yes, we’d all like to forget those days), I made the trip a slow one and with this change in pace, the region grew on me with new appreciation. I vowed to return someday, intending to explore two small villages I’d seen signs of along the way. BY
Afew years later, three of us set out in search of what the Karoo has to o er. For me, some mountain passes where my new SUV could stretch her tyres; for fellow journalist David, some quirky stories and curious succulents; and for foodie Derick, some of the region's artisanal producers.
Our first destination in the semi-desert was an easy 45-minute drive o the N1. Prince Albert appears as an oasis in the Karoo, and before enjoying a cold draught at one of the local pubs that were playing into our thirst, it was time to o oad our bags at the aptly named De Kleine Price. I had booked us into what seemed one of the region's most impressive reimaginings of a Karoo home.
Owner Adrian Lombard is a creative force of note, and after decades of working in the creative industry, this is his Lifesong to the world. And what a beautiful one it is. Volumes of thought have entered the conception of De Kleine Prince, with every corner carefully conceived, considered and curated. I asked what brought the Joburg raconteur
to the heart of the Karoo: "I was looking for a sophisticated village close to the mountains. Having a quiet retreat for city dwellers to be creative and recharge. A space to refocus, refresh and rewind. That was always the goal."
De Kleine Prince was designed as a plush rental stay and a content house with multiple spaces for brand shoots. It cleverly doubles up for creatives in need of escape and inspired work. The three distinct parts – the Victorian House, Barn and Poolhouse – can be hired separately or for exclusive use, with 10 beds in total. Plus, you needn't worry about the summer heat; the pool, lush gardens, and airconditioning provide excellent respite from the summer sun.
Following the Karoo's theme of whitewashed architecture, many of the home's spaces echo the calm tranquillity of the Karoo; my double-volume bathroom is replete with seven metre-tall Natal mahogany trees, and the jasmine-drenched pagoda (where local therapist Lynne-Marie delivers intuitive treatments) are but some of them. dekleineprince.com
Researching Prince Albert, guide Ailsa Tudhope's Ghost Tour kept leaping to the top of my screen. She is informative, quirky and fun – and she brought the village alive in a way few could. And yes, there were plenty of tales of ghouls and spooky apparitions. For gourmand outings, Derick made sure we sampled delicious fruit at Weltevrede Fig Farm and then cheese from the renowned Gay's Dairy.
I recalled Sally Andrew's words from Recipes for Love and Murder: "I made some co ee and went and sat on the stoep to watch the day arrive. It happens all of a sudden in the Karoo. One minute, the light is soft and full of the night's shadows, and then the sun is blasting everything awake." After three mornings of the sun blasting us awake, it was time to point the Audi northwards.
Twenty minutes after the frontier town of Graa -Reniet, the N9 takes you further into the hinterland, snaking through the scenic Rubidge Kloof and descending again into the fertile valley where Niue Bethesda waits.
There are no tar roads, street lights or tra c lights. It truly feels like being transported back in time; although people have settled here since the late 1700s, the road was completed only in the 1960s, and tarred more recently than that.
While researching the town, a friend mentioned that I had to stay in "the beautiful cottage with a unique name… if you're lucky enough to get a booking". As fate had it, Mukti was available. Another two Joburg gents searching for a dream Karoo escape found their nirvana in Nieu-Bethesda and, thankfully for us, opened it up to guest bookings.
"We were possibly hunting for a 'rural' place to rest and recharge. We were instantly smitten with Nieu-Bethesda when we arrived and extended our stay." Mukti was the property they bought on the edge of town and gave a complete overhaul: "The biggest challenge renovating a property eight hours' drive from home is the regular checking required us to drive ten of thousands of kilometres.”
Arriving at Mukti, I went straight to the pool, where whitewashed walls, oversized succulents, and black door/ metal detail make for a remarkable scene. Mukti o ers two bedrooms, two lounges, a study and a large kitchen that spills onto the veranda. A walk through the house feels in part like a turn through a gallery, with the walls adorned with a bevvy of striking artworks and limitededition prints. Curiosities abound, but everything feels like it belongs. instagram.com/mukti_karoo
Mention Nieu Bethesda and people will usually respond by referencing the Owl House and, while this quirky spot has undoubtedly given the town its fame,
there's a lot more to do. My confession (yes, the second in this article) is that we didn't enter the site. Our brief walk past was enough to quell my curiosity. After all, we were on a mission to see what Nieu Bethesda had to o er beyond this wellknown haunt.
In search of local cuisine, we were led to Brunos, where their Karoo Table provides a flavourful welcome to the town. Owners Ludolf and Carla Smit are relatively recent transplants from Johannesburg but have quickly become ardent advocates of the Karoo town. Be sure to ask to visit their underground cellar.
Craft beer and the village's best co ee flow freely at Two Goats Deli, where economics lecturer turned brewer André Cilliers has lived for almost two decades. He recalls when the town was home to no more than 20 residents. His beer is available onsite, so it's a case of savour on the spot.
The 1905 NG church is worth a visit to see the Vincent pipe organ, which – I discovered after firing up – was in perfect
working condition. A short walk away, Dustcovers is a veritable treasure trove for literature lovers with over 1 000 titles.
For a fascinating outing, take the 15-minute drive to see the Stone Folk of Ongelukspoort, a permanent outdoor installation by Ryno Gree that combines mountains and art with nine freestanding 'stone people'. If you are looking for a vantage point with the best views of the village, Marette se Bank on the Uitkyk Pass o ers unbeatable views.
With many candlesticks scattered around the stoep – inspired by the bright Milky Way overhead – we celebrated our last evening in the Karoo with some of the products we had foraged over the past days, but the highlight, perhaps, was Angie's bread. Mukti's housekeeper made perhaps the region's finest bread. Of course, she proudly refused to share the recipe for the baked treat made in the kitchen's traditional stove, giving us a viable reason to return.

The latest addition to Signorina collection
This collection stands out by providing jewellery enthusiasts with two stone options in each pendant or bracelet, a feature that sets it apart from other jewellery lines.
The design is based on a button, a motif that forms part of Pomellato’s design heritage – a gold necklace from 1974 – an inspiring detail that conveys many messages. Drawing on the button’s historical significance, both as a functional accessory and talisman, Pom Pom Dot’s soft round silhouette becomes a modern-day emblem of connection and protection.
Pomellato’s Pom Pom Dot double-sided jewellery line is a unique offering from the Italian Maison.
The discs flip over to reveal a di erent gem, o ering an unexpected and spontaneous way to wear the same jewel in several ways. The fashionably chic colours of the Pom Pom Dot jewels are easy to mix and match or stack and bring a refreshing sense of fun to easy-to-wear jewellery. The jewels are o ered in three variants. The first features green malachite on one side and mother of pearl on the other. The second features dazzling white diamonds on one side and mother of pearl on the other. The third variant combines grey mother of pearl on one side and white mother of pearl on the other. With a simple flip, each pendant or bracelet allows the wearer to choose which colour to wear.
Each stone brings positive force: malachite emanates a harmonious energy that promotes inner peace and hope. Diamonds bring courage and strength, and mother of pearl is associated with wellbeing as it protects and balances the emotions. Grey mother of pearl reflects the qualities of wisdom and patience.
Each pendant and bracelet has a ‘gold thread’ that runs through both sides of the button. One side of the gold thread is sleek rose gold, while the other is embellished with white diamonds. To complete the line, Pomellato has also introduced three pairs of earrings presented in malachite, diamond pavé or white mother of pearl.
After nearly four years of experimentation, Pêche emerges as a delightful addition to kitchens worldwide, aiming to infuse charm and a zest for life into culinary spaces.
Le Creuset, renowned for revolutionising cookware with vibrant colours since its inception almost a century ago, has recently introduced Pêche, a new hue destined to captivate both home cooks and professional chefs alike.
French for ‘peach’, Pêche exudes warmth and vibrancy. It boasts a glossy, graduated finish with inviting, rosy undertones that captivate the eye and tantalise the senses. Its energising and endlessly cheerful demeanour makes it a deliciously inviting shade, capable of effortlessly uplifting spirits and brightening palates.
"The culmination of nearly four years of dedicated experimentation, Pêche represents a fresh colour development previously unseen in the market," remarked Ben Paine, CEO of Le Creuset Africa. "With its blend of playfulness and elegance, Pêche reinforces Le Creuset's status as a premier authority on colour, both within the kitchen and beyond."
Radiating exuberance and playfulness, Pêche adorns a wide array of Le Creuset's renowned enamelled cast iron pieces, including the iconic Signature Round Casserole. Additionally, this captivating hue extends to various stoneware and essential kitchen items.

“Over the past seven or eight years, our focus has been on mastering the art of wallcoverings. CS4D represents a natural progression for us, extending our expertise beyond walls and onto other surfaces in our own unique way,” explains Cara Saven, the founder of Cara Saven Wall Design (now CS4D). Cara Saven has debuted three new flagship products: tablecloths, napkins and textured wall hangings.
Driven by a passion for beauty that's also practical, Cara identified a gap in the market for tableware that allowed for creative expression without sacrificing a ordability or ease of care.
"All the exquisite tableware I encountered came with a hefty price tag and special care instructions. I'm not one for special care; I'd rather enjoy the beach."
Thus, the CS4D range is designed to bring beauty and simplicity to everyday life. From stunning textured wall hangings, easy to hang and perfect for adding character to bare walls or for travellers seeking a piece of South Africa abroad, to a delightful range of tablecloths and coordinating napkins that fulfill every tablescaping dream. Each piece bears the hallmark of Cara Saven Wall Design's refusal to blend into the background when it comes to design.
As for the name, CS4D? It's Cara Saven for (4) Décor, a straightforward explanation. However, the playful twist with the term ‘4D’, referring to the fourth dimension, was deliberate.
"The fourth dimension is time. It's the dimension we cannot see, yet it's what gives meaning to space and objects. Time is precious. It allows us to imbue meaning into the material aspects of our lives. This décor range is a celebration of that concept," explains Cara. "Just as our wallcovering range brings depth to a two-dimensional wall, this range celebrates the fourth dimension with three-dimensional pieces. Essentially, it's a tribute to time spent with loved ones, creating memories, and the time saved in caring for these products."
Lexus USA recently whisked me o to the vibrant stage of the Miami Design Week, where I enjoyed immersing myself in the unveiling of 8 Minutes and 20 Seconds, an extraordinary installation conceived by the visionary Dutch solar pioneer Marjan van Aubel. Nestled within the verdant confines of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami), this captivating creation injects a renewed vitality into the Lexus LF-ZC (dubbed the Future Zero-emission Catalyst) through Van Aubel's innovative solar craftsmanship. In collaboration with the esteemed Random Studio, she debuts her artistic prowess in Miami for the first time, leaving an indelible mark on the city's cultural landscape.
Named after the duration sunlight requires to reach Earth, 8 Minutes and 20 Seconds is not just a visual spectacle. It showcases organic photovoltaics (OPV), a cutting-edge solar technology that seamlessly integrates transparency with vibrant colours. The LF-ZC appears adorned with a mesmerizing graphic design, elevating its aesthetic appeal to unprecedented heights.
But this installation is more than just a feast for the eyes – it's an interactive experience. Motion sensors delicately choreograph a symphony of lights, mimicking the gentle undulations of water ripples. Suddenly, the space erupts into a kaleidoscope of hues, echoing the exhilaration of a spirited journey from dawn to dusk. This interactive element invites visitors to become part of the artwork, enhancing their experience.
Yet, the brilliance of 8 Minutes and 20
Seconds extends beyond its visual and interactive components. Powered entirely by sunlight, the installation harnesses solar energy and stores it within concealed batteries to illuminate the space throughout the day.

Indulge in the irresistible flavours of Oryx Desert Salt's lightly spiced recipes. Whether you're hosting a gathering, packing a lunchbox, or enjoying a family dinner, these delectable treats will leave you reaching for seconds... and thirds!
Yes, triple hummus. Optional, sure but once you’ve tasted it, you will opt in every time! Thanks to the lovely Pesto Princess and its three delicious hummuses (hummusii?), the flavours in this already delicious dish stood up and sang. Three steps, all easy, and you’ll have a crowd pleaser for your guests.
CHILLI OIL
1 clove garlic (a nice big one)
3–6 sprigs oreganum, stalks removed
1–3 tsp Oryx chilli salt
1/ 3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1. Place in a saucepan and heat on low for 5–10 minutes (a slow simmer.)
2. Switch off heat and set aside to let the flavours continue to get to know each other.
ROASTED CAULI
1 head of cauliflower broken into florets
2 Tbsp (or more) extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp ground cumin
a few grinds of Oryx chilli salt
1. Toss cauliflower florets in the oil and spice.
2. Roast on 180°C (360°F) for 20–30 minutes until the edges are charred. Check on them around halfway. Airfyers are quicker, so stay watchful.
HUMMUS
Pesto Princess Hummus – we used three flavours: Classic, Coriander & Chilli, and Harissa
1. In a large flat bowl or serving plate, spread the hummus thickly; we had the Classic flavour in the middle flanked by its spicy cousins.
2. Place the cooled cauliflower onto the hummus and drizzle the chilli oil over.
3. Serve or keep in the fridge until your guests arrive. Don’t steal a bite or there will be none left and you’ll have to ask someone to go buy more dip.

METHOD
1. Soak enough thick wooden kebab sticks in water at least 30 minutes before using them.
2. Top and tail the onions, and decide how thick you want your steak. Aim for at least 3 cm; you should get 1 or 2 steaks from each onion.
3. In a small saucepan, gently heat up the olive oil, soya sauce, honey and BBQ salt, stirring until the honey has dissolved.
4. Braai the onions over hot coals, brushing them with your BBQ-honey mixture each time you turn them. Cook until the onions are to your liking, and the sauce is finished. Sprinkle with more BBQ salt to taste.

2. Add cheddar and stir to evenly distribute.
3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk eggs, olive oil, yoghurt and oat milk.
4. Pour into dry mixture and stir until just combined; beware of over-mixing.
5. Fold feta and spinach in.
6. Divide between 12 muffin cups.
7. Bake at 180°C (360°F) for 5 minutes, and then for 15–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

When you realise the usual impressions of the Balearic Islands as a cheapand-cheerful party destination couldn’t be further from the truth, an enticing invitation awaits to fall in love with these dreamy Spanish islands.
On a recent visit to Barcelona, Mallorca was a short 50-minute flight away, so I had no excuse not to flip over to discover the island’s Mediterranean magic.
BY JARED RUTTENBERGMy love a air with Palma, a resort city and capital of Mallorca, began with winding strolls through the cobblestoned streets and classy gabled courtyards of the island’s biggest city. With all the feel of Barcelona, but on a more intimate level and at a slower pace, the mix of Gothic, Modern and Nouveau architecture is enchanting. Some of Gaudi, a well-known Spanish architect and designer, and his younger apprentices’ influence are still to be found, and the impressive Can Casasayas and Pensión Menorquina buildings, along with the Gran Hotel (Fundacio la Caixa) proudly hold their place in any Google favourites list.
The Palace and Cathedral are impressive 12th century buildings worth admiring. As a treat after all the walking, indulge in a little decadence at Cappuccino, the swanky (and oh-so-Instagrammable) café adjacent to the Palace.
Hearing about a century-old train running daily between Palma and the town of Soller (tucked in the Tramuntana Mountains and a World Heritage Site), I quickly added the railway trip to our itinerary. A return trip can be taken in either direction, allowing enough time to explore your chosen destination. Journeys last around an hour and cost €27 return.
A little insider tip: the front carriage has an open section with wooden benches and a closed carriage with leather recliners – these are available on a first-come-firstserve basis on the same ticket fare. Simply wait at the front of the train and try to board first to claim one of these coveted spots.
Moving north, nestled in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, the town of Pollenca feels somewhat removed from the rest of the island. In the village,
I began exploring the church of Santa Maria, where in Gaudi-esque styling, the sun threw a kaleidoscope display of colours over the sanctuary. Next was the 365 Calvari steps up to the elevated chapel, which proudly looks out over the landscape (do also enjoy the viewpoint just o to the right of the chapel entrance).
Once you’ve walked back down, the a ordable €3.50 ham and cheese croissants from the unassuming Ca’n Moixet are tasty rewards for any calories spent. While in town, the local textile producer Teixits Vicens o ers tempting shopping (think of it as the Mallorcan version of South Africa’s Mungo).
Pollenca has an eponymous coastal enclave (Puerto Pollenca), which serves as the gateway to Mallorca’s northern Formentor Peninsula. The drive to Formentor beach is an experience in itself, winding along dramatic passes that give glimpses of hidden coves and the azure waters below. Adjacent to the beach, you can’t help but notice the large hotel. Preface your visit by watching
With up to 75% off local and international flights.
Netflix’s Formentor, the Sea of Words, which is a fascinating look at the hotel’s history and the region. You’ll likely be impressed by the lineage of legendary guests who have frequented the hotel, which has recently been purchased by Four Seasons and has a muchanticipated 2024 launch.
A staycation at the five-star Son Brull Hotel & Spa was in order to revel in some of Mallorca’s luxury hospitality o erings. Mere minutes outside Pollenca, with its renovated 18th century monastery home, this rural retreat has been a luxury hotel for just over 20 years. Now a proud member of Relais & Châteaux, it is passionately run by the devoted 2, whose ethos is proudly Mallorcan. Their hyper-local focus on the region was beautifully evident throughout. From the items on o er in the store to the decor and styling. With an emphasis on local ingredients, the breakfast menu’s enticing Full Mallorcan included more than one local sausage, and even the French toast had its local stamp with ensaïmada (the island’s famous sweet pastry), replacing the usual bread component. Honey and fruit from the garden were in abundant supply, and since this is Spain, yes, oranges aplenty. For
a fine dining a air, Restaurant 365 is open every evening (incidentally named after the fact that at the time of renovation, the monastery building had exactly 365 doors and windows).
The small collection of stylish rooms is arranged around a central courtyard, all connected to the restaurant, café, spa and pool. Four secluded family villas with splash pools are tucked away in the property gardens. They were designed by celebrated Catalan architect Carme Pinós, winner of the Essentially Mallorca Prize 2022 and the Spanish National Prize of Architecture 2021, the country’s most respected architectural accolades.
Miquel Suau shared some insight with me about the growth of luxury tourism on the island, along with Mallorca’s changing global perceptions: "In recent years, there have been
several changes in the sector, including a noticeable shift to luxury tourism, evidenced by the increase of luxury tourists and growth in the number of high-end hotels and restaurants. There is also a growing awareness of the environmental impact of tourism, and Mallorca is taking steps to become more sustainable. The sector is constantly evolving, and we’re interested to see how it continues to change in the years to come."
This shift was tangible and, while parts of the island may still be host to party culture, a smart emphasis on luxury o erings quickly shows the island has much more to o er to the discerning traveller.

Supersized and supercharged, the Defender 130 is one of our ultimate family movers. And guess what? This SUV can fit eight people. I have been lucky enough to test the smaller Defender 90, the slightly bigger 110, and now the larger-than-life 130. Things just got bigger and better. Parking this supersized unit is a bit daunting but comes with a 360-degree camera, so reversing is much easier. As rugged as the Defender looks on the outside, it's luxurious living on the inside.
The ride and handling are incredibly smooth. If the saying ‘smooth sailing’ hadn't existed already, it might as well have been
coined for this experience. Whether cruising on the open road, navigating city streets, or exploring o -the-beaten path, the 130 delivers consistently comfortable rides.
In the Defender 130, the extra row of seats isn't just an afterthought. It is equipped with headrests, padded armrests, storage and USB-Cs, ensuring adults back there won't feel cramped like in standard SUVs. The extra seating does take away from cargo space but to solve that, you can always put a Thule storage box on the roof or go old school and hitch a Venter trailer on the back. The Defender 130 will put you R1 970 800 out of pocket but into the pound seat.
