EDITOR’S NOTE

As we say goodbye to summer and welcome a new season, we look forward to cooler days and crisp nights. The autumn months are some of the most beautiful in our country and the perfect time to enjoy an outing or two. And because it’s always a good time to indulge in good food and wine, we’ve put together a list of new restaurants worth visiting in Cape Town.

The shift of seasons allows us to re-evaluate our wellness and make changes where necessary. In this issue, we look at the importance of rest and how sleep impacts our overall health. We also dive into the topic of personal boundaries; author Nicky Rowbotham explains why saying no is saying yes to yourself.

If you’re looking for adventure, don’t miss our feature on the beautiful Gondwana Pioneer Trail as it is the ultimate slackpacking experience. We

also explore Umngazi, a remote and truly unique spot on the Wild Coast. For something further afield, we bring you a travel guide to a week in Croatia.

Packed in these pages, you’ll find our roundup of all the best new fragrances, books, décor, food and wine (don’t miss our sommelier Emile Joubert’s latest musings) to make your life just a little more joyful.

We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have loved putting it together.

Happy reading!

ENDLESS OPTIMISM

The new collection from Scotch & Soda invites us to dream, wonder and escape.

Scotch & Soda has released its new collection for autumn, which draws on the wonders of the Earth. The pieces feature unique prints inspired by different viewpoints from the sky, the wilderness and outdoor exploration. The collection is designed with a connection to the Earth in mind and is also a celebration of the brand’s ongoing partnership with Trees for All, a foundation that aims to restore forests worldwide. Together with Scotch & Soda, Trees for All has planted around 82 000 trees to date.

28 / STYLE FEATURE /

FOR WOMEN

At the heart of the women’s collection are feminine silhouettes and soft fabrics. The pieces are designed to feel effortless and can be worn just as easily at night as during the day. Classic shirts, dresses and T-shirts have all been reworked to create the ultimate wardrobe essentials. The season’s new dresses are available in a range of silhouettes and prints and are made to be mixed and matched; think a tiered maxi dress paired with a hoodie featuring planet-inspired embroidery; and a midi dress with a hand-drawn floral print.

29

FOR MEN

The men’s collection is modern and can be worn across seasons. Some of the brand’s signature styles are juxtaposed with joyful details like conversational labels and ikat print tapes. There’s a focus on natural fabrics, such as organic cotton; Pyratex, a blend of cotton and nettle; and fibres from banana agricultural waste. Inspired by outdoor exploration, the collection includes chino shorts with a bold floral print, knitted sweaters, and loungewear that takes on an outdoor mood, balancing sportiness with comfort. Shirts are made to be worn all year; lightweight flannel as well as well as colourful stripes and checks.

30 / STYLE FEATURE /

THE MOOD

The collection is unmistakably optimistic, and feel-good graphics and quotes are printed on organic T-shirts and sweatsuits. Playful details like accent pins and embroideries reflect the free-spirited attitude and love of self-expression synonymous with the brand.

PRINTS AND TONES

The prints are inspired by views from space and include abstract prints, trees and flowers viewed from the sky, and rocks and textures of Earth. The colour palette is earthy, while surges of colour provide an interesting contrast: dusty pink, dark reds and military green, and washed-out brights and new tie-dyes.

Natural Rhythms

Floral designer, creative maker and conservationist Nicky Andrag transforms a variety of plants into unique botanical artworks for her nature-focused brand, Velt.

Ihad to learn to trust my gut about what is beautiful,” says plant-lover and committed conservationist Nicky Andrag. She’s relating the story of how she came to start her botanical art studio, Velt, in 2017. It’s a tale that takes o from the point at which, exhausted by the relentless demands of a high-pressure corporate job, Nicky decided to leave the world of IT behind her and ends with a childhood passion for pressed flowers transformed into a thriving small creative business.

Nicky’s story will sound familiar to many. A creative person at heart, she graduated from South Africa’s Vega School – which focuses on training in design and brand communication – in the late 2000s but ended up working as a project manager in software development. Some eight years later, she was almost completely burnt out, and in those pre-pandemic times, working from home or requesting more flexible working hours was out of the question.

Bravely, Nicky resigned, initially intending to take some much-needed time out. The instant transition to having what she describes as “too much time” in a day was a shock, so she expended some of it on long daily walks with her beloved dog, Luna, in the forests and mountainside sanctuaries that many Capetonians are fortunate enough to be able to access. “I had to learn to let go,” Nicky says, “and make peace with stripping back” in the face of what she acknowledges were feelings of guilt about doing nothing.

Those long, grounding walks in nature also became a time to ponder a new direction. And one of the questions Nicky began asking herself was what she most enjoyed doing during her childhood. The answer: flower pressing. Knowing she had loved the entire process of pressing various types of flora to preserve them as a child and inspired by her increasing connection with the natural world around her; by her mother (a dedicated, lifelong gardener); and by her bent for wildlife conservation, Nicky began a process of research and development that led to the emergence of Velt.

She has a clear focus on making every aspect of Velt meticulously respectful of nature and with an eye on the ongoing task of preservation and environmental awareness, too.

“Velt is all about the preservation of nature,” she says, remarking that the notion of stopping to smell the flowers might be a cliché

but that it’s true: most people genuinely don’t pay much attention to the amazing complexity of the natural world around them. Having spent the past few years carefully harvesting plants – she sources her specimens only from farms and gardens – and working to understand their unique forms as she meticulously processes and presses them, Nicky’s respect for the natural world has considerably increased thanks to her working experience, she says.

Nicky regularly works on special commissions. She has collaborated with interior designers on bespoke projects, including a complex two-metre piece created with Andrea Kleinloog of Johannesburg’s Anatomy Design, which now has pride of place in the lounge area of the luxurious Kruger Shalati lodge. For the spa at the new Singita Kwitonda lodge in Rwanda, Nicky produced 12

large works, and she’s also recently used foliage foraged on-site by the designers of a lodge in Botswana to create unique pieces that feature the endemic plant species of the area around it. Private commissions include regular requests to press and preserve wedding bouquets and pressed floral funeral tributes to keep as memorial mementoes on occasion.

Future plans for Velt include a new type of product that is still at the concept and prototyping stage and includes stained glass elements.

“It’s quite bright and Art Deco, in a way,” Nicky says. She’s also involved in the development of a conservation project in Kafue National Park, Zambia, together with her husband. It’s an understatement to say this all seems a rather long way from software development: for Nicky, what began as a way to explore and celebrate a connection with plants is now leading her towards long-term ways to support the worldwide push to conserve and respect the natural world. www.velt.co.za

Nicky at work in her simply decorated, low-fi studio. Her working days don’t follow a set routine, so some days are all about collecting plant specimens, while others are dedicated to methodically fitting those new finds into her handmade presses and checking on the progress of flora that is already in the presses. Still, other days are dedicated to framing.

Frame shapes are chosen to enhance the forms of the pressed flora: here, the drama of a bold Barberton daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) is beautifully expressed in a circular frame.

Clockwise from top left: Nicky sources her specimens only from sustainable sources. These large leaves from a Japanese aralia plant (Aralia japonica) were sourced from a local florist in Stellenbosch, and the resulting pieces form part of Velt’s Love Of Leaves collection. While Nicky notes that orchids require extra care and attention to press because of their high moisture content, it’s easy to see why pieces from the Orchid Blooms range are among Velt’s most popular items. Leaves can become ethereal – indeed, almost ghostlike – in Nicky’s delicate work. While Nicky generally eschews box frames for her work, she does use them when they particularly suit a plant. In this mantlepiece display, an eye-catching work made up of two specimens of a prickly pear cactus skeleton in a classic black gallery-style frame combines well with a delicate fern in a circular soldered glass frame and a bold leaf from the rice-paper plant (Tetrapanax papyrifer), which is an invasive species in South Africa.

THE JOY OF DRUMMING

An interactive drum show and wine tasting is an experience not to be missed.

Drumstruck, an interactive theatre experience, has returned to our shores. Held at Silvermist in the Constantia Winelands, the show allows viewers to journey through the history of African music, learn to play a drum and be entertained by some of the world’s best interactive drummers. As an added bonus, the show is paired with a wine tasting that includes a selection of wines from Constantia’s top estates.

THE PRODUCTION

The show has been running in Cape Town since October last year and will continue

until the end of April. The performers have toured the world, having done stints O -Broadway in New York, Australia, Dollywood in the USA, and Japan. First developed in the early 2000s, the show aims to bring the joy of communal drumming to audiences across the globe.

Drumstruck producer Warren Lieberman is excited to have brought it home to Cape Town. While the show at Silvermist is a scaled-down version of the international production, it includes the same elements of storytelling, learning and interactivity for which it has received rave reviews.

THE EXPERIENCE

Drumstruck features some of our country’s best percussionists and performers, and there’s no denying the real sense of Africa they evoke. The audience is invited to enter a space that includes a rare collection of indigenous African instruments where they are taken on a journey through South Africa’s musical heritage. Each audience member is given a djembe drum and encouraged to play and sing along with the performers.

The show is hosted at Silvermist Wine Estate, surrounded by Table Mountain nature reserve and boasts uninterrupted views of the Cape Peninsula. It’s the only organic wine estate in Constantia and has some of the most diverse and unspoilt terrains in the city. Owner and winemaker Gregory Brink Louw facilitates the wine tasting while sharing some of the histories of the Constantia Valley. Children are also welcome to join; little ones can enjoy an iced rooibos tea tasting.

SEAS

A dreamy seaside cottage in a Cape village with a candy-coloured interior and a sweeping ocean-facing deck strikes the perfect balance between fun and functionality.

54 / DECOR & DESIGN /
PHOTOGRAPHS WARREN HEATH TEXT LORI COHEN PRODUCTION SVEN ALBERDING
N S E W

The new owners of this beach cottage tucked into the mountain above the seaside village of St James in South Africa knew the house needed vision and TLC. However, the charming features and breezy lifestyle it promised were precisely the kind of project floral designers Dané Erwee and Chris Willemse had been aching to get their hands on. “We held out for a decade to find a property that had uninterrupted views,” explains Dané, one half of the creative team behind Cape Town’s floral and event company OKASIE.

A game-changing deck was added to capture the prized views and add liveability and space to the footprint, but internally space was still a premium. In a bold yet brilliant move to solve this, they reconfigured the interior by slotting bathrooms into an unnecessary passage hallway, shares Dané.

The row of three bathrooms separating the bedrooms from the living area saves immense space. Embracing the quirky design decision, they upcycled sash windows, installing them above the bathroom doors to invite light in and inject a touch of whimsy. The walls were washed with Cretestone tinted with pigment into warm pink, olive green and soft blue. Moroccan bathroom tiles in complementary shades make for a fun threshold between the bathrooms and the living area.

The playful use of paint extends into the kitchen and living area, where peach and watermelon tones blush from highlighted walls, window reveals, and the fireplace and a minty hue extends from floors to the exposed wooden ceiling. “I wanted the house to be quite eccentric. A bit of Mediterranean, a bit Capri, and very colourful,” says Dané.

Loose pieces of marble were cut for the windowsills to add more colour and a layered e ect. Floors were kept simple in a muted concrete screed, and in keeping with Dané’s objective to reuse as much of the demolished material as possible, the original pine floors were repurposed to box out the roof space. “It gives the feeling of being cocooned in these beautiful colours,” shares Dané, and adds that when choosing furnishings, they also wanted pieces to be light and fun. Repurposing furniture and unique finds for their event business is the ultimate enabler, Dané confesses, and many of the items that now live in the cottage are lifted from their catalogue of creations.

The philosophy extends to the kitchen, where most cabinets and cupboard doors are made from repurposed shutters or screens and fabricated by Dane’s brother Theunis. Shelves are open (a practical decision to beat the moisture-heavy sea air) and display treasured pieces that give the cottage an authentic feel and keep it true to its roots. “I’m a bit of a kid still,” laughs Dané, “I like things dreamy and fun.”

Most of the doors and windows were too weatherbeaten to be salvaged, however. With the passage reassigned and the entrance door closed, they opened up the front of the cottage, adding a sweep of double-glazed glass and shifting the entrance. The kitchen and dining area now flow onto a deck that delivers outside dining, comfortable spots for siestas and unwavering views of the Indian Ocean. Filtered light comes from the budget-friendly wood batten used to create the pergola.

With the combination of the lush garden setting, stone terraces topped with chalky white paint and the airiness of the expansive deck space, you can’t help but be mentally transported to the Mediterranean. “It’s always been about the view for us.

The cottage is wonderful, but its purpose is to be a periscope through which we can enjoy the sea,” says Dané.

59 / DECOR & DESIGN /
A floral design created by Dané from the plants and flowers surrounding the cottage. Left: The living room is filled with an eclectic mix of upcycled pieces to create a fun, theatrical style. For example, an ageing floral sofa was covered with a muted brown slipcover, strategically cut holes to expose the blooms.
60 / DECOR & DESIGN /
Dané chose to dress the fireplace and mantel with colour, marble and vintage children’s books to reflect the bright and playful ambience he wanted to create in the living area. Right: A simple galley kitchen was a cost-effective and efficient solution for the weekend getaway in St James, near Cape Town. Chris encourages natural growth on the stone walls that surround the cottage.
61

As with all the bedrooms, you enter the master suite through a bathroom installed in what was previously a central passage that cuts through the cottage. Part of a wall in the main bedroom was exposed to reveal the original stonework, while the gable above it was restored and washed with a lime-effect paint.

When the passage of the cottage was repurposed as a series of bathrooms servicing the bedrooms, Dané says the primary challenge was capturing light while maintaining privacy. The original asbestos roof was replaced with tin, in which a glass panel was installed as a solution.

62 / DECOR & DESIGN /
63 / DECOR & DESIGN /
The second bedroom flows onto a walled alley filled with plants. The bathroom that serves the guest bedroom differs from the other two in that it has a green theme. A minty pigment in the Crestone ties the mix of Moroccan tiles together.
65 / DECOR & DESIGN /
A ‘dead’ alley that could not be planted had new life and beauty breathed into it with the addition of pond pots with goldfish and water plants. Left: Adding a deck to the small cottage transformed it into a breezy, liveable space where sea views dominate. To create visual interest and vary the dappled light, the pergola was constructed with a ship-like hull shape.

The indigenous garden behind the house is as important to the ambience as the ocean, says Dané. “When a breeze comes down the mountain, it brings with it all the wonderful fragrances of the plants.”

BOUNDARIES

BOUNDARIES

ARE BADASS

It took me a while to become okay with saying no. But what I started to realise was that always saying yes to others was saying no to myself. For so long, I chased the gold star of other people's approval. As a reformed workaholic, I can look back with empathy and kindness and fully understand that external validation was my drug of choice at the time, feeding my sense of self-worth. With others' opinions and feedback as my North Star, I became too flexible and fluid with my own needs, allowing behaviour I would never tolerate now. The boundaries in my life looked like smudged chalk lines on the floor. Over time, those boundaries had been scu ed and faded

to such an extent, no one could be sure they were ever even there; implicit permission to overstep the mark and I'd facilitated it. The biggest myth about boundaries is that other people are crossing them, but we have allowed them to be crossed because it is not anyone else's job to uphold, respect or honour our boundaries. It's up to us.

Boundaries are the limits we set for ourselves and others about what we will not do, accept and tolerate in our lives. Boundaries enable us to hold space for ourselves and our needs. Where we feel resentment in any area of our lives, it is the number one sign that a boundary is needed, as we are out of alignment with ourselves. Where we have no boundaries, we e ectively block and override our own desires as we say someone else's agenda, needs, wants and desires are more important than our own.

71 / WELLNESS /
When saying no is saying yes to yourself.

Boundaries are the limits we set for ourselves and others about what we will not do, accept and tolerate in our lives.

72

Re-establishing boundaries is hard as we often have to step out of deeply ingrained patterns and habits of pleasing or blaming others where we haven't previously held space for ourselves. As I became centred in my life and sure in my knowing and self-worth, no longer outsourcing my validation, I realised my own approval was the only gold star I needed in my life. The vague mistiness created by my lack of boundaries started to clear as, daily, I began to set small delineations around what was and wasn't acceptable for me.

Our boundaries shouldn't change direction or shift with the wind. When we hold our boundaries consistently in all scenarios, they create clarity for others, but they also send a message that we want to feel valued and we are worthy of feeling valued. Often this message is most important for ourselves. We need to reframe boundaries as badass and it's one of the kindest and loving things we can do for ourselves. It's kind and empowering to say something no longer serves us. Where we have porous boundaries in our lives, it can mean we are unwilling to stand in our truth, and we need to continue to reframe that it's empowering to say no. It's our way of holding space for ourselves and reclaiming our personal power.

In life, I have often found there has been a negative connotation with boundaries, especially where our lack of boundaries was convenient for others. So, be mindful of the energy bought to holding a boundary. When we are triggered, reactive and feeling resentful (often as a consequence of a lack of boundaries), the boundaries we do hold can feel like an electric fence rather than an easeful garden gate. Boundaries are kind when they are clear and consistent. The energy we have expended in 'sucking it up', acquiescing and being stuck in a feedback, repeat loop of saying yes when we mean no, removes us from our authenticity. And it keeps us small as we subvert our needs to keep the peace and avoid friction and disappointment. This energy often shifts into resentment, and an action that we thought would maintain the peace in the connection or relationship often erodes it. Boundaries create clarity, and where they are not appreciated after a calm and kind conversation, we may have to consider if the situation still serves us. Start small and start to practise holding boundaries in areas of your life that feel safe. Don't overexplain your boundaries, as this erodes your sureness. Now, there is only one thing left to ask: how are you going to embrace your elegant power and set a new boundary for yourself today?

REST IS BEST

We’ve all woken up after a bad night’s sleep feeling awful, and if you are not making good sleep a priority, the chances are you are feeling the impact on a daily basis. Experts advise that adults between the ages of 18 and 60 years old sleep for at least seven hours every night. Without enough sleep, the risk of sleep deprivation becomes a reality, and with that comes a range of issues that a ect overall wellness. So, why exactly is sleep so important? And what can you do to ensure proper rest?

SLEEP IS GOOD FOR YOU

You might think you can function on minimal shut-eye but the reality is sleep plays an important restorative role. Every time you sleep, your body repairs and rebuilds, ridding itself of debris from the lymphatic system and strengthening the immune system. In fact, several crucial processes –including muscle repair and tissue growth – occur during sleep, too.

Sleep also helps to relieve stress; sleep deprivation raises our cortisol levels and can even lead to hormonal imbalance and systemic inflammation. On the other hand, being well-rested improves mood regulation and makes it easier to concentrate and make decisions.

75 / WELLNESS /
Don’t skimp on sleep – for the sake of your health, read more on the importance of sleep.

PROTECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Sleep deprivation may be a contributing factor to a number of mental health problems. In fact, sleeprelated problems are a common concern for those who su er from mental illness and disrupted sleep is often a symptom or consequence of mental health disorders. Insomnia is the most common sleep problem related to poor mental health. The issue, which is often caused by stress, poor sleep habits, nighttime screen use and excessive consumption of alcohol or ca eine, often leads to daytime sleepiness and poor daytime functioning, as well as irritability, anxiety and depression.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT

Sleep deprivation wreaks havoc on our hormones, including those that regulate hunger and appetite. Leptin (the hormone that suppresses appetite) and ghrelin (the hormone that triggers hunger) are both a ected by a lack of sleep: leptin decreases while ghrelin increases.

On top of these hormonal changes, we are more likely to make unhealthy choices when we are tired. You might feel less inclined to stick to your exercise regime when you’re low on energy, for example, or to opt for junk food over a

home-cooked meal. Over time, chronic fatigue often leads to weight gain along with other issues associated with a high BMI.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

If good-quality sleep is a struggle for you, a good starting point is to get into a healthy bedtime routine. This means going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time in the morning. While you might be tempted to sleep in after a bad night, the reality is that our bodies thrive on regulation. Sleeping in often can leave you feeling tired and worn out.

Along with a regular bedtime, it’s also a good idea to create an environment conducive to sleep. Ideally, your bedroom should be cool and most experts recommend a temperature between 15 and 19 degrees. Try to go to bed relaxed so your core temperature is low and your heart rate drops. One way to do so is to practise yoga before bedtime as a few simple poses can help to calm the nervous system and take your mind o the events of the day.

Gondwana’s Pioneer Trail is the ultimate slack packing adventure where your belongings are moved daily between the three camps, allowing you to experience the dramatic fynbos landscape with only a light daypack.

A walk in the wild.

GONDWANA’S PIONEER

There was a nervous gasp and a startled look on two of the guests’ faces. They told us they’d just seen a flash of yellow fur dart past them in the bush. Our guide’s face quickly lit up.

“It could be the two cheetah brothers! Shall we walk back through the bush to see if we can find them?”

It was an anxious but quick yes from us. Back into the bush we went in search of the fast felines. While we couldn’t confirm the sighting, it was a distinct possibility they had crossed our path. We were, after all, in a freeroaming game reserve...

As the name aptly suggests, the Pioneer Trail is the first of its kind in the Western Cape: a rare chance to combine both Big Five territory with the UNESCO Heritage Site (bestowed by virtue of the prolific fynbos). It is a mythically beautiful environment where spinning top cone bushes, gorses and proteas replace the usual acacia and veld bushes. The Pioneer Trail takes in four days of the wilderness: just over 20km of hiking and overnighting in three distinct camps.

Gondwana is an 11 000 hectare property, 4h30 from Cape Town or a 45-minute skip from George Airport, and the reserve is a prime example of rewilding in South Africa; private reserves working at restoring land to what it once was. The challenge of rewilding pertains not only to fauna, but also flora and all this we were about to witness in person.

DAY ONE

After a lunch platter, a quick orientation, and the signing of an identity form - another gentle reminder that I was about to walk in the wild – our two guides whisked us o to our first camp. East Africa took the shape of four luxury tents arranged around a communal area featuring a central dining room, lounge and boma. Since the rates are fully inclusive of all meals and drinks, it was time to enjoy a G&T and start to acclimatise to the wild new surroundings. As always, it was around the campfire where the stories flowed and our guides, Andre and Christiaan, shared the hardships they faced over the pandemic and the circumstances that led them both to Gondwana, a place they’re both proud to now call their home. After a bountiful braai, followed by a bath in the Victorian claw tub in my tent, it was time to surrender to sleep, with the bush providing a natural soundtrack.

80

DAY TWO

After a magnificent night’s sleep, it was a brief breakfast with entertainment, courtesy of a troop of baboons exploring the adjacent cli s. While adults gleaned in the morning, the youngsters jousted rather precariously along the steep banks. Since it was slack packing, all we had to carry was a backpack with water and lunch. The Pioneer Trail ascends fynbos-covered hills and then descends into hidden valleys. The trail has been cleverly designed so that the sun is always behind; it’s much appreciated in the summer heat. Walking with our guides was a bush education of note. The two were so enthralled by the bush that, at times, animated discussions ensued regarding something they had spotted, and it would take a few minutes before they would remember us standing observing. We would then be brought into the deliberations around their discoveries: “It could be a love scene, murder scene, anything…”. It was bush forensics at its best. Arriving in the evening at Camp Mozambique was welcomed after the day’s walk. The first port of call was an afternoon nap. We awoke to the smell of a seafood spread, which had more than one of the guests drooling.

DAY THREE

The hike on the third day was a shorter 8km saunter, most of which took place over the plains with various game sightings. The walking also came more naturally and I came to appreciate bush therapy: having to focus on footing and constantly being alert takes your mind away from what usually plagues it. There’s also less of the reach-forphone reflex. With little or no signal, there’s no need. Walking past a wild dam, Andre invited us to take a dip. After he assured me there were no crocs or other treacherous creatures, two of us dived in to enjoy some respite from the heat. Eventually, we walked into camp Morocco, greeted by a feast of North African fabrics and colour. The décor and finishes at all three camps were collected by the owners on their travels, adding to the personal touch. We felt we had earned the right to trade in the hiking boots for a comfy seat on the game vehicle and relished the chance to jump on a cruiser and head out for a threehour game drive. Andre tried his best to appease my constant fascination with elephants as we meandered down the dirt roads. Eventually, in the waning light, he parked the vehicle. “If we see them, it will be from here.” The hills rippled out in the distance before us, and lo and behold, after 20 minutes, a line of elephants traversed one of the distant hills.

The fully inclusive package includes luxury accommodation, a two-day guided walking safari, game drives, and all your meals and beverages, including packed lunches for the trail. You literally just need to “bring your boots” and the Pioneer Trail team will do the rest. It has been said there is no better way to experience nature and wildlife than on foot.

82 / TRAVEL /

DAY FOUR

Sitting on the vehicle on the transfer back to my car, I had a niggling sensation – a desire to jump o and get back into the bush in my veldskoene. Sadly, the city was calling and with it, the end of this wonderful wilderness sojourn. One that brought together unique big five territory, luxury camping and many unforgettable moments in the bush. gondwanagr.co.za

A GRANDEUR COLLABORATION

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has partnered with jewellery Maison Fabergé to create a unique treasure.

86

IN A VERY special collaboration, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the world’s leading luxury ocean cruise line, has joined forces with Fabergé, the world-famous jewellery Maison to release a rare, first-of-its-kind treasure for the line’s new ship, Seven Seas Grandeur. The ship will set sail in November this year, and the bespoke design will be the first Fabergé Egg Objet to reside permanently at sea.

THE ART

The Fabergé x Regent Seven Seas Egg Objet is titled Journey in Jewels. It will form part of a multimillion-dollar art collection, which will debut onboard the Seven Seas Grandeur. The piece will not be available for sale and will be displayed only for guests on the highly anticipated new ship.

The Journey in Jewels Egg Objet takes inspiration from the iconic Fabergé Winter egg of 1913 as a nod to the importance of heritage in both the Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Fabergé

brands. The piece also represents the natural elements of the sea and conjures up visions of epic voyages on the water. A three-tiered base features a gently cascading waterfall in ocean greens and subtle turquoise while soothing deep blue waves on the outer shell become lighter before breaking into a sea spray of pearls.

The exterior of the egg features an ombre enamel shell, which is a milestone moment for the Maison as it is the first time Fabergé has applied this intricate enamelling technique to an egg. The technique is extremely technical and is made even more challenging on a curved surface.

The outer shell is made up of seven blades to represent the seven seas. Each one will unfurl to reveal a surprise hidden inside, but the details are closely guarded until the ship is christened later this year.

The egg objet will stand at around 18cm tall, and a three-tiered base will hide the movement of the opening mechanism, marking yet another first for Fabergé.

THE SHIP

Regent’s newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur, is inspired by the past while beautifully reimagined for the future. Boasting unrivalled space, exceptional cuisine and transformative experiences, the ship embodies the cruise line’s heritage of perfection. The decision to partner with Fabergé for the central piece of the art collection was easy as the jewellery brand also has a long legacy of perfection and craftsmanship.

Seven Seas Grandeur is Regent’s sixth and latest addition to “The World’s Most Luxurious Fleet”. When it sets sail in November, it will cruise 18 voyages in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, as well as two transatlantic crossings. The inaugural voyage collection will include a new maiden sailing, which spends seven nights discovering the Adriatic and western Mediterranean from Venice to Barcelona.

The award-winning Studio DADO designed the ship and is all about refined style and elegance. Guests will be spoilt for choice regarding restaurants, along with 15 stunning accommodation options.

REASONS TO USE HYALURONIC ACID

Keep your skin glowing with this naturally occurring super substance.

93 / WE LOVE / 5

When it comes to achieving and maintaining well-hydrated skin, there’s one ingredient that always comes out on top – hyaluronic acid. Found as an active ingredient in a broad range of skincare products, from serums and cleansers to moisturisers, it is loved in the world of beauty for its ability to plump fine lines and make the skin glow.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in our bodies. It can hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water. As such, it binds water to the skin and boosts hydration. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases over time. The good news, however, is that topical products that contain the ingredient can help to rebuild what has been lost. Here’s why you should consider adding this super ingredient to your regime.

HYDRATES SKIN

Hyaluronic acid plays a key role in helping the skin cells retain water. Think of the ingredient as a magnet for water; it penetrates the skin and binds water to the cells, permeating all the layers of the skin with moisture. This contributes to hydrated, healthy-looking skin. When the skin is hydrated, it feels soft and looks more youthful and radiant. Hyaluronic acid also has a plumping e ect on the skin, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

This often leads to fine lines, wrinkles, dryness and pigmentation. Hyaluronic acid can lock in moisture and strengthen the skin’s natural barriers. This helps to protect the lipid barrier and slows down its deterioration over time.

ENHANCES RESILIENCE

When hyaluronic acid protects and strengthens the lipid barrier, it’s easier for the skin to fight o damaging toxins. This keeps damage at bay and helps maintain brighter, smoother, healthier skin. Interestingly, the preservatives used in many products can harm the lipid barrier by destroying good bacteria in the skin. When choosing skincare products, try to go for those with fewer ingredients and a minimal amount of preservatives.

SUITABLE FOR ANY SKIN TONE

3

One of the benefits of hyaluronic acid is that it can be used on any skin type and tone. It generally works well on both oily and dry skin, as well as skin prone to acne or breakouts. Products that contain hyaluronic acid are typically easy to add to most skincare routines because the ingredient doesn’t counteract other ingredients, including vitamins, retinols and acids. Plus, the ingredient itself is lightweight and oil-free.

SAFE TO USE

4

Hyaluronic acid is considered safe and does not usually cause any adverse side e ects when applied in its topical form. In fact, the substance is naturally found in the body and doesn’t strip the skin or harm it in any way. Unlike other acids, typically used for their exfoliating properties, hyaluronic acid is used for its moisture-binding abilities and is very gentle on the skin, delivering hydration in the areas that really need it.

HOW TO USE IT + WHAT TO CONSIDER

5

No matter what your skincare routine looks like, it’s easy to add hyaluronic acid to your daily regime. The ingredient is found in countless products, from serums, eye creams and moisturisers, to cleansers and masks.

BARRIER ENHANCER

The skin’s natural barrier is made up of naturally occurring fatty acids, which protect the body by trapping water and preventing irritants from entering the skin. As we get older, the lipid barrier that protects the top layer of skin tends to slow down, which means UV rays and other environmental factors can do more damage.

2 1

Before you choose a product, there are a few things to consider. Look at what other ingredients are in your product of choice, and be sure to avoid anything that has caused you irritation. It’s also best to avoid products that contain alcohol, which can dry out the skin and counteract the moisturising benefits of hyaluronic acid. It’s worth noting hyaluronic acid and vitamin C work well together, so consider choosing a product that contains both of these ingredients.

If you’re using a hyaluronic acid-rich serum, apply it after you’ve cleansed your face. While the skin is still damp, gently dab a few drops onto your face. To seal in the hydration, don’t forget to complete the process with a moisturiser.

POSITIVE FOO TPRINTS

Hollywood meets South Africa in a new social impact shoe.

American actress and dancer Briana Evigan, best known for her role in the Step Up series, has joined forces with local company Veldskoen Shoes to create positive social and environmental change. Briana and her business partner Stuart Newton are the founders of MoveMe Studio and, together, they are on a mission to positively impact the lives of humans and animals. Now, they have collaborated with Veldskoen, a likeminded ally, to create the Ranger Boot. The boot has been dubbed a social-impact shoe as 50% of the net profits are donated to drives for positive change.

HOLLYWOOD MEETS LOCAL

Briana has over 15 years of acting experience and, with an extensive network, has created a platform for marginalised voices. Through this platform, she hopes to bring attention to those who have previously been ignored; and to showcase stories that have, until now, been untold. Her goal, ultimately, is to give a voice to the unheard.

A SOCIAL-IMPACT SHOE

Veldskoen Shoes was the ideal partner for Briana’s project; they have created the Veldskoen MoveMe Ranger Boot. It’s a unisex lace-up boot designed to leave positive footprints. Inscribed on the soles are the words ‘love’ and ‘trust’. “A person walking in a pair of Veldskoen MoveMe Ranger boots is literally leaving a message of upliftment for whoever walks behind them,” explains Briana. And with social responsibility in mind, 50% of the net profits are dedicated to Abundant Village, a set of solutions to provide water, food, energy security, education, housing, wellness care and job opportunities to communities in need.

A SOUTH AFRICAN BRAND

Founded in 2016, Veldskoen Shoes is a local company deeply interested in stimulating the local economy through its supply chain and growing labour force. The brand has established itself globally in just a few years, with shoes sold in 33 countries worldwide. All of its products are proudly made in South Africa. www.veldskoen.com

My chommie

Let your pet’s personality shine with the ultimate in walkwear.

here are few extremes to which dog lovers won’t go to express their a ection for their pooches, including, in certain celebrity cases, buying them diamondencrusted collars or carrying them around in Louis Vuitton handbags that cost more than the GDP of a small country. But for the regular dog owner who wants to make just as bold a statement – one that reflects their pet’s uniqueness and colourful personality – without putting a dent the size of Texas in their bank account, there really is only one brand of choice… and that’s Chommies!

SERVING PURE STYLE, DOGGY STYLE

Proudly South African, Chommies specialise in luxury dog accessories handmade by local artisans. These wares are then sold through a constellation of outlets around the Cape and country, including Ebony/Curated in Franschhoek, the Zeitz MOCAA Art Gallery at the V&A Waterfront and Singita Safari Lodges. Think non-rusting brass hardware, leather detailing, and kaleidoscopic beadwork rendered into contemporary, high-quality collars, leashes and harnesses. They even do treats, toys, name tags and a cornucopia of other useful accessories for dogs and cats.

WE LOVE /

The overall Chommies aesthetic is bright, bold, vibrant and occasionally raw. Think of it as delivering a nod to South Africa’s beautiful natural heritage and a sneaky wink and a smile to your pet’s kooky uniqueness. Moreover, unlike that diamond-encrusted collar, you won’t cry when your pooch goes tearing down the beach or rolling around in the mud in their fancy accessories because each piece is durable and resilient, made from exceptional quality materials to survive even the most unhinged episodes of ‘the zoomies’.

MEET THE FOUNDER, NATHALIE KLIJN

So, who is the mastermind behind Chommies’ striking walkwear for pets?

Nathalie Klijn is her name, and she was born in Stuttgart, Germany. In 2012, life brought her to Cape Town, where she was promptly seduced into staying (the Mother City has that e ect on people). She then “did the thing” ... the thing that makes turning back impossible. She adopted a puppy.

With her new puppy Ringo as her muse, Nathalie Klijn picked up a bit of a side hustle making collars, first for her own dog and then for friends. Over time, enchanted by the people she met and their many talents and generational artistry in weaving, macramé and beadwork, Nathalie began building the lifestyle brand she’d always dreamt of.

103

Named after the South African colloquial term for ‘friends’, the brand stands today as a loving ode to our pets’ roles in our lives as dearest companions and, let’s be honest, therapists.

WHAT’S NEW, PUSSYCAT? (WHOA!)

The latest range from the house of Chommies is called Clifton 1st after Clifton’s only dog-friendly beach. Tucked into the steep foothills of Lion’s Head, Clifton is a white-sand beach with westward-facing views over the glittering Atlantic Ocean. Taking inspiration from this iconic location, Chommies’ Clifton 1st range embraces a sense of summer fun with its gorgeous and bright, polychromatic beaded designs. Masterfully made and durable despite their delicate aesthetic, these beaded collars and leashes embrace the laid-back vacation culture and vivacious beach vibe that feels so totally unique to this part of the Cape.

Then there’s the Chommies African Ecstasy range, which incorporates nonrusting brass hardware, leather detailing and a colour palette that ranges from burning Highveld sunset to springtime Namaqualand blooms, all of which capture the raw, untameable beauty of our country.

A NEW LOCATION

Until now, Chommies has had its luxury goods in a variety of stores peppered about the Cape and country, but now the fashion house has opened its very own concept store on 110 Hatfield Street in Cape Town, located in a beautiful building previously known as Ravenswood House – a national monument built in the late classical Georgian style. “As we naturally evolve into more of a lifestyle brand that celebrates colour-happy contemporary design and artisanal luxuries made in South Africa, we wanted a feel-good, welcoming space that is a sensory experience for people and dogs alike, as well as one that allows us to develop and showcase new products in home, fashion and accessories,” explains Nathalie Klijn.

Here, guests can peruse Chommies’ full repertoire of products, while pets are encouraged to convene in the dog-friendly courtyard and hang out, have a drink of water, and even romp through the water fountain.

CAPTURING CONNECTION

The Chommies philosophy is really about capturing the connection between humans and animals. It’s about adorning our beloved pets with accessories that honour their unique personalities, which is a small gesture in return for the gifts they so abundantly heap upon us, not only in the form of companionship, but also as much-needed reminders to live in the moment, trust recklessly and love with our whole hearts.

The wonderful thing about South Africa’s Wild Coast – aside from the sweeping, sugary-sand beaches, lush forests and abundant birdlife – is its benevolent winter climate. And there are few better ways to enjoy the Wild Coast’s mild, sunny winters than with a naturesteeped getaway at the exquisitely indulgent Umngazi Hotel & Spa.

Savour the winelands

The winelands of the world come alive in this beautiful new recipe book, Harvest Table.

T

116 / FOOD & WINE / H
H
Harvest Table is an exquisite recipe book created by Monché Muller, the executive chef of the international wine label Oddo Vins et Domaines. The collection of recipes takes readers on a culinary journey through some of the world’s best winelands – from France, Italy and Spain to our very own South African farms.

Inspired by a casual conversation about good food and wine, the book blossomed into a passion project, culminating in a gorgeous hardcover that showcases the stories behind the ingredients, the communities and the producers who create the Oddo Vins et Domaines wines.

All recipes, which vary from region to region, capture the soul of their origin. As such, the book is packed with a broad and eclectic range of culinary delights. Oddo Vins et Domaines partners include winemakers and estates in Provence and Sancerre, France; Sicily, Italy; Rioja Alavesa, Spain; and Stellenbosch, South Africa and the recipes are a reflection of this global mix.

Created for foodies of all levels, the recipes range from easy to inventive, with a combination of traditional and those with a more contemporary twist. Some highlights include a South African-inspired and super-refreshing naartjie, fennel and prawn salad; an Italian Crostata di pomodoro e ricotta (heirloom tomato and ricotta tart) made with rough-pu pastry; and clafoutis aux prunes, a country-style French dessert made with plums and a dash of rum.

The Oddo Vins et Domaines estates in Stellenbosch include Taaibosch, Pink Valley and Le Chant. Monché Muller is the head chef at Pink Valley Wines, and many of the recipes are distinctly local; think leaf masala seafood potjie, a beautiful fusion of Cape Malay flavours and traditional Afrikaner cooking; roosterkoek with freshly churned rooibos-smoked butter; chocolate and coconut marshmallow ja es, the perfect outdoor dessert; and Peppermint Crisp dom pedro, the ultimate adult’s milkshake.

When it comes to winemaking, the Oddo family follows a simple principle: to select the very best terroir and partners and to rely on local expertise. For the owners, Pascal and Lorraine Oddo, producing wine that pairs perfectly with lovingly prepared food is an honour and a privilege. Harvest Table is an opportunity for them to share their world of food and wine.

The book has already won two awards at the 2022 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, and is a candidate to compete for ‘best in the world’, representing South Africa at this year’s awards ceremony in Sweden.

Finding the sweet spot

It has been a long hot summer, and no, it has not been thirsty.

Over the summer months, crates of frosty beer were consumed, along with copious alertly refreshing gin and tonics. Not to mention the chilled bottles of dry white wine and, devil-in-me, some beaded vessels of Champagne. But, even in the heady temperatures and sun-drenched days, a wine-lover longs for a glass or two of red wine to satisfy that primal lust for tannic, berry-fruited vinous pleasure. But when it’s 34°C in the shade, even the most ardent vinophile finds the prospect of a glass of oaked Shiraz or earthy Cabernet Sauvignon about as attractive as climbing Table Mountain in a pair of long woolly underpants.

A REFRESHING RED

Over the past summer, a few red wines passed my thirsty, heated palate, proving that when it comes to refreshment, the reds can actually o er the zingy cool enjoyment to rival the perkiest Chenin Blanc of Chardonnay while providing that long run of red grape flavour to satisfy the parts of a wine appetite that the whites simply can’t.

Top of the heap is a wine made from the Shiraz grape, a variety known more for its brooding, bloody spice weightiness than for summertime sipping.

The wine in question is Kleine Zalze’s new Syrah du Plateau 2022 , a limited release of 600 bottles. Kleine Zalze winemaker RJ Botha says he had wanted to get his hands on some Shiraz grapes from the rarefied chilly heights of Ceres Plateau for some time, and when he managed to score a ton or so, the idea was to do something original.

So, the grapes were given the whole-bunch, carbonic maceration treatment in two of his beloved terracotta amphorae and released in November 2022. In a clear flint bottle, sealed with a glass Vinolok

stopper and with a stand-alone label, despite it being a Kleine Zalze wine, available from the tasting room only.

The most important thing about this wine is that it is extraordinarily delicious. Being 11.5% alcohol in a summery bottle, I chilled the wine and took it to a convivial lunch on a humid day in Durbanville. The only problem was there was just one bottle. A juicy gorgeous yumminess. Gulpable to the max. On the nose, this Syrah du Plateau has scents of dried prunes lying on a bed of dried lavender, with a cavernous chill on the aroma, one redolent of sea caves at low tide.

The juice hits the mouth like the first breath of cool air after a torturous and hot bout of mountain climbing. There is the cheekpuckering jig of sour cherry coupled with some wild bramble, plum and a coaxing touch of strawberry. Then, just enough savouriness provides the umami-like delight of sweetish meeting savoury. And broad, too, this wine, the carbonic maceration and lack of oak giving it the obvious wide and scented charm making its comparison with a very fine and still young Beaujolais unavoidable. Invigorating and delicious, you’ll never look at Shiraz the same way after a few glasses of this wine.

FRUITY AND ACCESSIBLE

One red wine that is known to present itself in an approachable fruity manner wrapped in a moreish juiciness is Pinot Noir. But thanks to the religious reverence, the wine aficionados have bestowed on this Burgundian cultivar, Pinot Noir su ers from an elitist and inaccessible image, together with the fact that most bottles are priced at stratospheric levels.

This is where Paul Clüver, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialists from Elgin are opening up a whole new channel for Pinot Noir appreciation and enjoyment with an accessible wine under the Paul Clüver Village o ering. On the estate’s upper tier, you will find the iconic Seven Flags Pinot Noir, followed by the famous Estate wine, both of which are among South Africa’s leading renditions of Pinot Noir.

With Paul Clüver’s Village Pinot Noir , the brand has created a delectable and sappy Pinot Noir featuring all the inherent flavours expected of the grape but made to a style that doesn’t require intense ageing or a consumer’s delving into further credit. The bottle price of around R125 makes many points in this regard. In preparing the Village, Paul Clüver’s younger vineyards are used, while the more senior sticks are headed for Estate or Seven Flags Pinot Noir. In their youth, the grapes o er a juicy brightness and more forgiving tannins, yet have the pedigree and breeding to present structure commanding the respect you would expect from this noble variety.

Ageing is done for 10 months in older French oak barrels and 5000-litre foudré, freeing the testosterone-driven tannins of youth, broadening the flavour profile and giving the wine an agreeable and inviting silkiness.

The Paul Clüver Village Pinot Noir 2020 is currently on the market, showing that a red wine can make for a season where the living is easy.

Cherry notes o er a summery sweetness upfront before a slight baconkip savouriness perks the palate. A discernible Pinot Noir typicity of stony autumn cool verges on the edges, providing a dappled brightness and multi-faceted dimension to the wine. Palate-weight is akin to an owl feather, with a coaxing furriness backed by a discernible stem of pliable yet pronounced rigour. Delicious and qua able as it is, the wine has a hum of the imposing trumpet call that heralds an honest Pinot Noir remaining true to its roots, secure to its calling.

PERFECTLY BITTER

One white wine discovery worth noting is a Chardonnay in the Survivor range of wines made at various Cape cellars by stalwart winemaker Pierre Wahl. I highlight this as it o ers an often-underrated aspect found in good Chardonnay: bitterness.

As we pursuers of the sensespleasing drinkables know, bitterness is pleasant and refreshingly bracing when wrapped within the framework of myriad flavours and textures. Tonic water with a slap of gin; a few drops of bitters to a sweet Tequila Sunrise; that crunch of celery with the Bloody Mary. Here a hit of bitter lifts and gives depth and character, and – in wine – a unique kick.

Survivor Wines has just released a Chardonnay in its top-tier Cellar Master Series, and here this unique bitter kick is found, taking the wine to the next level.

Grapes were sourced from the Tradouw region near Barrydale. This is where Pierre has made magic by fermenting the wine in di erent batches, using an array of barrels and tanks to achieve a balanced purity.

It certainly has worked because the Survivor cellar master can rightfully stake a claim among the finest renditions of Chardonnay for which the Cape is building such a sterling and noted reputation.

On the nose, the wine smells of gold and wilderness, those noble elements of white flowers and sunny white fruit and crushed nut shells slightly disrupted by buchu roots still covered with fresh, old earth. This edginess continues onto the palate, where Chardonnay pedigree holds true in the precise tastes, including grilled hazelnut splashed with seawater, cold butter hitting a crust of fresh, warm sourdough bread and a most delicious sun-drenched compote of honey and lime. A run of rock salt adds to the thrill.

And don’t forget that slight edge of bitterness. Here it is; Sicilian lemon peel, thickly cut and the invigorating tang of a green loquat, this presents itself in the wine. It adds action and brilliance, giving this Chardonnay a uniqueness, a sense of own.

Constantly on the lookout for variety in Chardonnay, this wine has found my sweet spot.

A MEDITERRANEAN DREAM

Croatia is about diverse landscapes, perfect beaches and magical cities.

130

Croatia is perhaps best known for its beautiful coastline and idyllic islands, but it’s also home to a rich culture, striking cities and unspoilt wilderness. A week in this sought-after destination could take you from a sun-drenched beach to a hike through the mountains, a stroll through a medieval city, or a boat ride atop sapphire water –the choice is yours.

/ TRAVEL /

WHEN TO GO

When you plan your trip, it’s important to consider the season that suits you best. The high season is also the hottest and is July and August. During these months, you can expect plenty of visitors enjoying boat parties, fairs and beach days, and you’ll have to book ahead to secure accommodation. Late spring (May) and early autumn (September and October) are quieter, but the weather is still pleasant. The o -season (from November to April) can be quite chilly, but if you’re visiting for good food, galleries and cultural sights, it’s a good time to take advantage of more a ordable accommodation.

The southern region of Croatia is generally a bit warmer than the north, although the main temperature di erence is between the interior of the country and the coast. Summers at the seaside are warm, while the winters are mild. The interior, however, has slightly warmer summers and colder winters.

132
Trogir City Gate. Located on a small island in the south, Trogir boasts a well-preserved Romanesque-Gothic Old Town. Split is the second largest city in Croatia. Split’s best-known attraction is Diocletian’s Palace and also home to the Cathedral of St Domnius.
133 / TRAVEL /
Dubrovnik is arguably Croatia’s most famous destination. Known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, this stunning city’s walled Old Town boasts marble streets and is famous for its white buildings crowned by orange roofs.

Above: Porec is a beautiful summer resort town with fascinating historical sites as well as popular family attractions. Pula is home to well-preserved Roman ruins, including the Pula Arena. It is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre in the world with a complete circular wall and was built between 27 BC and AD 68.

The coast of Cres is dotted with bays and coves. The ancient forests and hidden towns across hilltops echo back to a time when life was much simpler.

WHERE TO VISIT

Croatia boasts over 40 000 kilometres of coastline and almost 1 200 islands, so if you’re looking for a beach holiday, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Zlatni Rat, on the southern coast, is the country’s most photographed beach and it’s easy to see why. The smooth white beach is surrounded by turquoise waters, while rocky cli s rise dramatically behind. For an o -the-beaten-track feel, it’s worth the trip to Cres Island as the area has retained its wilderness and is covered in forests, cli s and hidden coves. It’s home to Valum, a small fishing village from which it’s possible to enjoy pebble beaches or hike along sea-facing cli s.

There’s more to Croatia than sun-drenched beaches. The country is also home to some amazing cultural and architectural sights. Not to be missed, the fortified city of Dubrovnik is a Unesco World Heritage site and you can expect medieval monasteries, hidden courtyards and gorgeous sea views from its city walls. The country’s second largest city, Split, strikes a balance between old and new. It’s possible to see some of the world’s most remarkable Roman monuments and enjoy modern bars and restaurants in the buzzing streets.

Known (and loved) for its café culture, Zagreb features a pretty promenade that extends along the city walls and o ers gorgeous views over the town. It’s packed with sweet cafés ideal for simply soaking up the atmosphere.

Brac is the third largest of the Adriatic islands and is home to one of the best known beaches in Croatia, Zlatni Rat. The Plitvice National Park consists of several breathtaking lakes, waterfalls and lush forest.

Left: Strolling through Old Town Dubrovnik is a feast for the eyes, as you pass by gorgeous, wellpreserved structures.

Below: The towns on both the mainland and the islands of the Dalmatian Coast offer visitors a mix of beaches, history and adventures.

WHAT TO DO

The country also has several national parks, which are well worth a visit if you love the outdoors and are looking for activity. Plitvice Lakes National Park is the perfect spot to view lakes and waterfalls and to walk in pristine forests. For more hiking opportunities, visit Mljet National Park. An easy day trip from Dubrovnik, the park has two large saltwater lakes that are great for swimming. Many people travel to Croatia for its crystal seas and gorgeous beaches, so it’s no surprise that there’s plenty to do in (and on) the water. There are many areas in which diving and snorkelling are possible, but if you prefer to stay on the surface, sailing and yachting are excellent ways to explore the coast. The Dalmatian Coast is the ideal spot to rent a boat and discover little seaside towns and hidden coves.

If you would rather sit back and relax with a good glass of wine, you might consider a drive along Peljesac, the peninsula that winds away from the Adriatic coast north of Dubrovnik. The area is covered in vineyards, and a number of boutique wineries o er wine tasting. In fact, the country has a long history of winemaking, and there’s the chance to visit both historic and modern cellars.

Don’t forget to try the local food, which is a delightful mix of Italian, Slavic, Austrian, Turkish and Hungarian cuisines. Some must-try dishes include ćevapčići, a dish made of ground meat and often served with flatbread, chopped onions and red pepper relish; burek, a filo pastry pie sold in all bakeries; brudet, a seafood stew usually served with polenta; and fritule, fried pastries made with citrus zest and raisins and often flavoured with brandy or rum.

THE EQA

Available in only 250 format, the EQA provides an entry point to the Three-pointed Star brand’s EQ portfolio. The baby EQ’s sculpted bodywork cuts a dashing figure. A highlight is the sculpted rear end, which features a striking LED light strip spanning the tailgate. The interior is suitably premium, with several soft-touch finishes and a generous amount of equipment – such as the German marque’s MBUX infotainment system – as standard. The drive is refined, balanced between comfort and a touch of dynamism. The EQA’s 66.5 kWh ‘double-decker’ lithium-ion battery pack, a structural element within the crossover’s underbody, is coupled with a 140 kW electric motor driving the front wheels. Benz claims the EQA 250 has an all-electric range of up to 429 km.

THE EQC

THE EQB

Whereas the EQA may excite young, upcoming executives looking for a stylish crossover, the EQB is for families wanting su cient space for the weekly school run and road trips with their loved ones. The EQB measures 4 684 mm bow to stern, 1 834 mm in width, and 1 701 mm in height. The EQB boasts a generous 495-litre luggage capacity thanks to its boxy bodywork. In addition, Benz o ers the option of specifying the five-seater SUV with two more pews for a seven-seat configuration. Locally, the EQB can be had in 350 4Matic guise. This variant’s twin electric motor arrangement produces 215 kW and 520 Nm of torque. Mercedes claims the all-wheel-drive EQB has an electric range of up to 423 km when the 69.7 kWh battery is fully charged.

The first Mercedes launched under the Stuttgart-based manufacturer’s EQ brand, the EQC 400 4Matic’s wheels are driven by a duo of asynchronous electric motors, each sited on the fore and aft axles, producing 300 kW and 760 Nm. Mercedes claims the premium-midsize SUV completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 5.1 seconds. Fully charged, the 80 kWh battery lithium-ion battery o ers an electric range of 437 km. Two design options are available: the original body styling and the firm's AMG Line package for those wanting a sportier look.

The EQS is the first luxury saloon bearing the Three-pointed Star emblem. The aerodynamically styled exterior looks sleek, while the interior is beautifully crafted.

THE EQE

The EQE saloon will be available in two flavours: the 350+ and AMG 43 4Matic. The former version of the avant-garde business saloon’s rear axle is driven by a permanently excited synchronous motor — coupled with a 90.56 kWh (usable) battery, which, when fully charged, o ers a range of up to 535 km — producing 215 kW and 565 Nm. The all-wheeldrive AMG variant’s two electric motors have 350 kW and 858 Nm on tap, which allows this model to surge to 100 km/h from a standstill in a claimed 4.2 seconds. Mercedes-Benz SA has confirmed the EQE SUV will also make its way to local shores.

THE EQS

Spearheading Mercedes-Benz’s EQ line-up, the EQS can be described as the electric S-Class. It’s the first luxury saloon bearing the Three-pointed Star emblem. The aerodynamically styled exterior looks sleek, while the interior is beautifully crafted (the rangetopping model ships with the automaker’s MBUX Hyperscreen as standard). The low-slung, luxury EV is available in two configurations: the (rear-wheel-driven) 245 kW/568 Nm 450+ and AMG 53 4Matic+, which, thanks to its outputs of 484 kW and 950 Nm, dispatches the 0–100 km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds. Both models make do with a 107.8 kWh battery pack. Fully charged, the 450+ boasts a range of up to 782 km, beating any EV currently available in SA, while the AMG model can travel up to 586 km before the battery needs to be replenished. In addition, for those wanting all the luxury provided by the EQS saloon in a taller-riding vehicle, Mercedes has announced the SUV variant will also be introduced to SA.
