STYLE SUMMER

The new summer collection from Polo is all about effortless luxury.

Synonymous with timeless style and immaculate design, Polo was established in the seventies when the company produced its first men’s shirts with the trademark square button. From there, the menswear collection grew, followed by womenswear and accessories. Today, the brand maintains its timeless aesthetic, and the brand-new summer collection is no di erent.

THE COLLECTION

The new collection, designed especially for summer, embodies a blend of e ortless luxury and everyday pieces in vibrant tones, breathable fabrics and impeccable detailing. The pieces are stylish without compromising comfort; think easy-to-wear golfers with the brand’s signature embroidered pony; relaxed T-shirts made from sustainably sourced cotton; longline linen shirts; and basic golfer dresses. All these elevated wardrobe essentials and timeless pieces are designed for everyday living, while quality and fit remain priorities.

NATURAL COMFORT

Designed for comfort, the collection includes plenty of natural fabrics, including linen and cotton. The brand’s activewear capsule and loungewear styles have been expanded with new silhouettes and fabrications.

The collection explores the fluid lines between work and play and is designed with adaptability and longevity in mind. With comfort at centre stage, the brand has continued to grow its sweats collection for relaxed and casual dressing. Some of the more classic silhouettes have been refreshed and include loop-back fleece and tech fleece and the use of pique fabric in new ways.

29 / STYLE FEATURE /

SHADES OF SUMMER

The summer collection embraces a colour palette that combines neutral tones with pops of colour for a vibrant and joyful energy. Expect shades of cool blue, crisp white, subtle grey and fresh greens, along with some lively pops of yellow and deep reds.

/ STYLE FEATURE /

SUSTAINABLE LIVING

The Polo summer collection uses sustainably sourced natural fabrics, and as a brand, their sustainable journey is seen foremost in their denim o ering. The company works with suppliers who prioritise the environmental impact of manufacturing through water-saving and improved dyeing techniques. Some of the key fits in the denim collection include their Slim, Straight, Skinny and Tapered styles in a variety of washes. A popular choice, the dark washes are refreshed with tonal topstitching and revised metal hardware.

bright aesthetic, Taryn Treisman’s work is deeply personal. Together with the buyer, Taryn works to create customised pieces that are truly unique. She has loved art ever since she can remember and decided to take the plunge as a fulltime artist four years ago. She describes herself as a very sentimental person, so creating personal, customised art is extremely important to her.

Taryn is currently based in Johannesburg but has also spent time abroad; her first job was at the Art Institute of Chicago. With a passion for art and tech, she combines digital art and acrylic paint on plexiglass to produce vibrant pieces that combine design, abstract pop art and gra ti.

Taryn established her brand Custom Pop four years ago. She creates custom pieces that combine digital and traditional art to bring a diverse range of subject matter to life. She uses her creative process to experiment, and each piece embodies her edgy, urban style.

Taryn has also collaborated with fashion and lifestyle brands to create accessories, including hats and bags. Her work is featured at several galleries in Israel and spaces in Johannesburg, Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town.

Each of Taryn’s artworks holds hidden words and objects. This is inspired by her belief that there are always hidden reasons or meanings behind situations, even when they are di cult. Her sentimentality also plays an important role in her work. When working on a commission, she will often include significant dates, special names, favourite foods, personal photos and other images to create something meaningful.

In terms of style, Taryn is deeply inspired by pop culture and loves colour. This is reflected in her modern gra ti style that often brings together various materials, including pu paints, metal, Perspex and canvas.

FIND RESPITE INnature

Botanical gardens are more than just a welcome oasis after the bewildering chaos of the city; these preserved green spaces are a testament to what breathtaking sensory symphonies can be achieved when humankind works in concert with nature.

KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS CAPE TOWN

Acclaimed as one of the world’s great botanical gardens, Kirstenbosch unfurls itself like a vast emerald skirt at the eastern foothills of Table Mountain. Here, a network of walkways wind through kaleidoscopic fynbos gardens that are home to many endemic bird species.

HANTAM NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS NIEUWOUDTVILLE

Nine trails lead visitors through 6,000 hectares of wilderness, covering a spectrum of habitats and soil types, the variety of which is just one reason Hantam is so unique. This is particularly true in the spring when the grounds erupt into multichromatic glory.

WALTER SISULU NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS ROODEPOORT

Considered Gauteng’s best escape for nature lovers, Walter Sisulu is home to a rich mosaic of vegetation types, wildlife and bird species, including a breeding pair of endangered Verreauxs’ eagles (named after two brothers).

HAROLD PORTER BOTANICAL GARDENS

BETTY’S BAY

Harold Porter embraces many habitats, from mountain slopes and deep gorges to relict forests and rich coastal fynbos in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Of special interest to visitors are the garden’s waterfalls and amber pools.

PRETORIA NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS

A literal 76-hectare urban oasis in the city’s eastern suburbs, Pretoria’s botanical gardens are a beautifully preserved green space of natural grassland, an important wildlife corridor, and home to over 220 bird species.

FOR THE LOVE OF WINE tour

BEYOND THE WELL-WORN wine trails of Constantia, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek lies a wine route of exceptional calibre and country charm: the Robertson Wine Valley. And now, for only R580 per person, it o ers visitors the opportunity to experience some of the wonderful wines, foods, stories and charms for which it has earned its reputation with the aptly named For the Love of Wine tour.

The day kicks o with breakfast and a craft beer tasting at Four Cousins, a rather jazzy, family-friendly wine tasting room, brewery and restaurant (with kids play area). Then, it’s onto Van Loveren’s cool, leafy gardens for a guided walk, complemented with beguiling stories about the trees, each of which was planted to mark a special occasion in the country’s or family’s history.

No sooner will you have walked o breakfast than it’ll be time for a food and

wine pairing! Van Loveren’s menu boasts a literal smorgasbord of options, so if it’s savoury you’re craving, try the artisanal cheese or charcuterie and wine pairing, but if it’s sweet, there’s the Tangled Tree chocolate and wine pairing (and a bevvy of options in between).

The final stop on the For the Love of Wine tour is the rustic yet luxurious Kalkveld tasting room at Zandvliet Estate; it’s name is practically synonymous with Shiraz. Here, using three of the estate’s truly delicious red wines, you’re invited to experiment with making your own unique red blend. This is capped o with wine tasting and a rather hedonistic cheese board.

The For the Love of Wine tour is exclusively valid until 28 February 2023. To book, email winehub@vanloveren.co.za. For an additional cost, book a spot on the Wine Valley Safari hop-on/hop-o bus: info@winevalleysafari.com.

REFOREST FEST 2023

LOCAL LIVE MUSIC, interactive art, and theatre to enjoy; a wholesome food village to graze your way through; and acres of milkwood forests and fynbos trails to explore... even without the main attraction, the Greenpop Reforest Fest 2023 sounds like an amazing weekend away. Now add to the mix the opportunity – or rather, the privilege – to plant trees and restore the Overberg valley to its former verdant glory, and you’ve got a profound and unforgettable experience just waiting for you, your friends and family!

Hosted by the Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat over the long Easter weekend of the 7–10 April 2023, the Greenpop Reforest Fest is returning for its 11th instalment of “fun environmentalism”: a weekend during which festival-goers enjoy equal doses of honest work and rejuvenating play. The ultimate goal is to plant tens of thousands of trees in the Overberg valley as part of a broader ecosystem restoration management plan developed by the Walker Bay Fynbos

Conservancy. In fact, between 2011 and 2021, Reforest Fest planted over 85 000 trees.

In addition to environmental restoration and the aforementioned feast of entertainment (to satisfy the whole family), the festival is dedicated to educating and promoting awareness with a variety of eco workshops, talks and classes on o er. For accommodation, there’s the exciting Tented Village, which caters to all budgets and preferences with a selection of pre-erected Kartents (fully equipped, two-person cardboard tents) or luxury-fitted bell tents.

Set against the backdrop of the Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat, beneath a shimmering ceiling of stars, you won’t find a more glorious place to rest your head at night after a soul-expanding day of giving back to nature; knowing the legacy you planted that day may not only outlive you but also contribute to the wellness of the environment for decades or even centuries to come.

Must visit

Indulge in our selection of South Africa’s newest and best restaurants. Here are this season’s must-visit restaurants to explore. BY THEA BECKMAN

Sometimes, we find ourselves wondering where the South African restaurant industry gets its unending inspiration from. Every year, a bevy of new cafés, restaurants, bars and lounges opens their doors –or undergoes a design reinvention – to cater to the seemingly insatiable dietary and liquid appetites of locals and visitors. It’s an incredibly dynamic industry that keeps us enthralled with a constantly improving standard of innovation, and this summer is no different. So, here is our selection of new restaurants you just have to try!

SONNY & IRENE CAFÉ BAKERY CAPE TOWN

Whether you’re serious about healthy eating or hunger for an indulgent brunch, Sonny & Irene – the “not-your-average” neighbourhood café bakery – caters to all tastes. Located on Kloof Road in Sea Point, this stylish retro café has an onsite bakery and pastry bar, delivering sweet and savoury café-style classics with a contemporary twist. The pastry bar opens at 7 a.m. for that onthe-go co ee and breakfast, while the main café is open from 8 a.m. right through lunch to dinner. Then, the cocktail menu comes out to play. YORI ŌKĪ SUSHI & GRILL, KZN

The new Yori Ōkī Sushi & Grill at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre represents the time-honoured art of sushi and the distinctive flavours of contemporary Japanese fusion. But beneath that layer is an embodiment of the ‘greater than’ philosophy that Yori Ōkī actually translates to: it’s taking a small, intimate space and creating a wholly beguiling atmosphere; it’s taking a cuisine that is simple at its heart and delivering a unique sensory experience that showcases immense flavours; and it’s making sure everything they do – from sushi to service – is done with enormous generosity of spirit. ONE&ONLY VISTA BAR & LOUNGE V&A WATERFRONT

As a stomping ground for A-list celebrities – the likes of Leonardo di Caprio – the One&Only at the V&A Waterfront needs no introduction. This is arguably Cape Town’s most glamorous hotel, and the strikingly reimagined Vista Bar & Lounge certainly upholds this reputation. In an elegant and contemporary double-volume space, floorto-ceiling windows afford uncompromised views of Table Mountain. In the kitchen, internationally acclaimed local chef Karen Dudley has teamed up with resort executive chef Jacques Swart to create a bespoke menu that centres on fresh, local ingredients.

SCALA PASTA CAPE TOWN

While pasta dishes are traditionally served as stand-alone meals at restaurants, which you have to then guard with knife and fork against order-envious family members, at Scala Pasta, dinner is different. Here, the emphasis is on sharing, and sharing means variety. So, after some delicious antipasti – like a great glob of creamy burrata cheese, Piemontese tartare with black truffle, and bruschetta potato focaccia –the recommendation is to order three to five eye-closingly delicious pasta plates. Make sure you try the Signature Carbonara by Michelin-star chef Luciano Monosilio! He is, after all, “The King of Carbonara”. Church Street, Cape Town www.scalapasta.co.za

DEUX LIONS, LA BOURGOGNE FARM, FRANSCHHOEK

Set in the resplendent Franschhoek Valley at La Bourgogne Farm, Deux Lions o ers an exquisite culinary complement to the estate’s already divine repertoire of wines. Under the stewardship of head chef Nanda Cardoso, the kitchen transforms homegrown gifts from the farm into honest yet delicious seasonal dishes that are a feast for all the senses. From cheese and charcuterie boards and freshlybaked brioche to Franschhoek confit trout, lamb rump and pork belly, if there’s wine to be soaked up – and there will be because it’s Franschhoek – then let Deux Lions’ menu do the soaking. DUSK, STELLENBOSCH

“At Dusk, we Dine!” is the motto of chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin’s new thought-provoking restaurant on Plein Street, Stellenbosch. And with a philosophy rooted in restaurant psychology and employee mental health, you can’t help but like Dusk before you’ve even stepped foot inside. To approach the guest mind-first and then through the senses with its immersive and captivating multi-course dining experience is unique. Guests can choose between the tasting menu (R995) and the premium tasting menu (R1 590), the latter of which has more courses and more opulent ingredients. Both have a beverage pairing option. THE NINES, CAPE TOWN

Just chillin’ on the ninth floor of the newly developed Station House at Nineteen Kloof Road, The Nines is the go-to rooftop restaurant and cocktail lounge this summer. From this lofty vantage point – with floorto-ceiling glass and a 200-square-metre deck – guests are a orded pretty much panoramic views over upper Sea Point and the glittering Atlantic Ocean. The Nines’ menu is all about “classics done right” with every dish a carefully considered standout, like the Seafood Risotto, the Lezena Spatchcock Roast Chicken, or the Lates Seabass. This isn’t even to mention the warm, inviting ambience, the exquisite lounge, and the cocktails. Sea Point, Cape Town | www.thenines.co.za

MODERN TAILORS RESTAURANT & GIN BAR, JOHANNESBURG

“To think of Indian cuisine, to most, invokes a delicious assault on the senses,” says somebody smart at Modern Tailors Restaurant & Gin Bar in Rosebank, Johannesburg. And they’re totally right; it’s why Indian eateries are ubiquitous, no matter where in the world you travel to. But here, at Modern Tailors, the vivacious colours, eye-watering aromatics and kaleidoscopic flavours of authentic Indian street food are delivered particularly masterfully. When the food is made with this much love and reverence for its provenance, as humble as those origins may be, it couldn’t be anything but great.

Chic ART OF THE

The ideal recipe for eclectic chic, 21st-century style? Combine the classic details of a Haussmannian apartment with owner Emmanuel de Bayser’s eye for the finest mid-century furniture and design objects –plus a growing collection of contemporary art. Parfait!

/ DECOR AND DESIGN /
TEXT ROBYN ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX PRODUCTION SVEN ALBERDING

When boutique owner and collector Emmanuel de Bayser outgrew his former Paris apartment – a pied-à-terre used mainly when he was in town to attend fashion weeks and select items for The Corner Berlin, his store in Berlin – he and his partner knew they wanted to stay in the same part of the city.

“The previous apartment was a bit small since we intended to spend more time in Paris,” Emmanuel explains. “But I liked the Parc Monceau area very much, and it is ideal for our dog, so I was pleased when I found this apartment, just 200 metres from where we were before.”

55

The front door opens onto a spacious entrance hall, at the far end of which a stone console table by French architect Joseph Dirand is topped with a table lamp by Georges Jouve, vessels by French mid-century ceramicists George Jouve and Alexandre Noll, and a small ancient Greek sculpture. On the wall above the table are three sunburst mirrors by French mid-century jeweller Line Vautrin. On either side of the table, double doors with classic trios of inset panels open into two separate living spaces to the left and right of the entryway.

The area’s famed parks were not the only attraction, of course. As Emmanuel says, this part of Paris is “pure Haussmannian style” and features many of the hôtels particuliers (grand townhouses) typical of the famous 19thcentury city planner’s designs. “This part of the city immediately makes you feel like you’re right in the heart of Paris,” he says, adding that “this Paris, and what it o ers – architecture, monuments, museums, galleries, restaurants, shops – is a permanent source of inspiration.”

Situated on the étage nobile, the coveted second floor of a Haussmann-style building, the apartment came complete with threemetre-high ceilings, classic wooden panelling, and beautifully detailed interior mouldings.

Walk up the stone stairway complete with wrought-iron bannisters adorned with carved elements, pass through the doorway of Emmanuel’s apartment into a spacious entrance hall, and you are drawn into a veritable cocoon of elegance. All the original wainscoting and wall panelling, the triple-height interior doors, and the wooden skirtings and cornices are perfectly preserved; all are painted plain white against walls in a slightly warmer, creamier shade, which has the e ect of subtly emphasising and celebrating their refined visual appeal. Floors are mainly original oak parquet, topped by large natural coir rugs. And similarly, the window coverings are luxurious yet minimal; cream ceilingto-floor curtains and, where required, plain white semi-transparent window blinds for additional privacy.

So far, so classic – and yet, what takes these interiors to another level is not the urbane appeal of the ‘bones’ of the building or the sublime simplicity of the backdrop created by floors, windows and walls. Rather, it’s the fact that all of this functions as a supremely elegant frame for the eclectic and very chic furniture, objects and contemporary art that catch and hold Emmanuel’s discerning eye.

To a collector, of course, furniture can become less of an attraction than objects and artworks, quite simply because furniture tends to take up a great deal of space! As Emmanuel says, “Once the apartment is furnished, there is little you can add except objects and artworks. But an apartment should never be finished; it has to live and grow… so in a way, I usually start as a minimalist and with the years end up as a maximalist.”

On a list of ‘things you never thought about until you were 30’, tile slip resistance must surely rank in the top 10. That is until a wet tile sends you 100 km/h in the wrong direction. Suddenly, those decorative porcelain tiles you DIY laid on your bathroom floor are the biggest mistake you’ve ever made. If you’re in the throes of building or renovating your home, save yourself a whole lot of drama by becoming slip-resistant savvy, which starts right here with excellent advice from our friends at Italtile.

FROM SLIP TO GRIP: UNDERSTANDING S/R TILE RATINGS

For starters, there is no such thing as a truly non-slip tile. Anything as smooth as a tile will become slippery when wet. This is because a lack of friction between the tile’s surface and your foot allows Newton’s Third Law of Motion to prevail (#science). And so, the correct term for tiles engineered to o er surface friction is ‘slip-resistant’.

Slip resistance (S/R) is measured on a sliding scale (excuse the pun), with R9 being the lowest for tiles used in areas that never get wet or that wouldn’t put your life at risk if they were, like your kitchen backsplash. R13 is the highest for optimum outdoor slip resistance, perfect for tiling around pools, where a good grip is paramount. Italtile’s insistence on high-end quality means all their slip-resistant tiles are highly rated.

KEEP IT CLEAN WITH TILE TLC

You know what they say: cleanliness is next to nonslipperiness! If you don’t keep your tiles clean, a build-up of dirt and grime can hurt all that smart S/R engineering,

reducing your tiles’ rating. Of course, repeatedly using harsh cleaning chemicals can also hurt tile performance over time. So, unless you’re conducting questionable medical practices from home, avoid using aggressive bleaches. Regular sweeping, a damp mop and warm water are all it takes to keep your floors clean enough to eat o of. Sort of: please don’t eat o your floor. For something with a little more antibacterial (and biodegradable) ‘oomph’ ask Italtile about their TFC Quick Clean Everyday Tile Cleaner.

HOW TO FALL CORRECTLY: A LAST RESORT

Failing the right slip-resistant tiles and the proper maintenance thereof, you need to know how to fall intelligently. Yes, that sounds like an oxymoron, but it could mean the di erence between a bruise and a cracked skull. If you feel yourself falling, protect your head by tucking in your chin, turning your head to the side, and bring your arms up to your forehead in the ‘brace position’ you see in airline safety pamphlets. Try and turn as you fall so that you land on your side, stay loose, keep your arms and legs bent, and roll out of the impact.

SLIP RESISTANCE IS LIFE

With kids, pets, and messy partners working against your attempts to keep a clean home, it’s a good idea to know how to ‘duck, tuck and roll’ like a ninja, lest you become one of the thousands of people who end up in the emergency room every year because gravity is cruel when tiles are slippery. But choosing highly rated slip-resistant tiles is the main thing, and Italtile should be your go-to store for smarter (and safer) flooring decisions!

INTERMITTENT REST

Building pauses for potency in our everyday.

73

Life isn’t a straight line – it is ebbs and flows, it is peaks and valleys. It’s the natural energy of life all around us as the tide comes in and goes out. To manage our high performance and delivery in the stress of our energy peaks, we have to dip down to recover. And come back better. For too long, too many of us have been red-lining through life, running at maximum speed, stress and capacity and being always on. If you do that constantly to a car, day in and day out, without changing gear, the engine will burn out or overheat. Why are we surprised when the same happens to us?

We cannot wait for a holiday, which often feels like a mythical oasis in the desert, a mirage on the horizon, always too far away. A consistent sleep routine is essential to help our bodies rest and regenerate overnight, but how we spend the other 16 hours sets us up for success in how we manage our energy throughout the day.

Intermittent resting is the practice of creating deliberate pockets of rest. In these intentional pauses for potency, we allow our bodies to flow with the energy peaks and troughs rather than forcing an unsustainable level of energy that normally leads to an energy crash late afternoon or evening as we collapse on the couch. We use our energy much more e ectively with micro-breaks or periods of rest during the day. We attune to the natural rhythms of life and honour our circadian rhythm (that controls our 24-hour sleep-wake cycle), as well as our ultradian rhythm, which are the cycles our bodies’ systems move through during the waking day. These cycles run on repeat and we should ideally rest for 20 minutes for every 90 minutes of work.

That is the ideal cycle, although life isn’t textbook perfect, so leverage the momentum of your individual, natural energy and understand where you energy increases and dissipates while you are awake. My golden hour is 5am but please don’t ask me complex questions after 6 pm. That is when my body winds down as I exhale and prepare for sleep. But it is di erent for everyone, so tune in and find a flow of energy that works for you. Ride your energy peaks and listen to what your body needs in the dips. Build in micro-breaks within your day to breathe deeply, step outside or go for a walk rather than reaching for another ca eine or sugar hit to force your energy levels to be always on. Become your own architect and schedule these pauses in your diary to hold space for yourself and your wellness. Predictability and routine create a sense of safety in our bodies; sensing that wellness is not an optional extra. Even taking a five-minute break every 60 to 90 minutes will deliver exponential energy returns. Shift your energy in the pauses by doing something that brings you joy without worrying about the outcome. Play is one of our most powerful tools. When we change tack and do something that doesn’t feel like work, we create limbic spaces that bring our unconscious thoughts into the conscious. This allows us to be more creative, innovative, and we often solve problems we have been struggling with in these times.

When we rush from one thing to the next, multi-tasking and diluting our energy, we

74 / WELLNESS /

❛❛

often don’t slow down to understand what we intuitively need to support ourselves as we are disconnected from the natural cycles in our bodies. We need to become more present in these moments by taking a few deep breaths to centre ourselves; to engage all of the five senses to embrace the pockets of rest, tuning into what you can feel, see, touch, taste and hear. Ask yourself what you really need to support yourself rather than what task you need to do next. Trust that your to-do

list has everything covered while you rest, as rushing through our days creates a stress response within our bodies. Stressors don’t even need to happen for a stress response within our bodies and nervous systems, as our thoughts and energy alone can trigger it. Pauses become an integral tool to step out of our stress responses, and they are all small yet significant shifts that build a foundation for our energy and resilience daily. It’s time to reframe pauses as potent and productive.

Oasis WITHIN AN OASIS

Babylonstoren has unveiled its exquisitely expanded Garden Spa.

ENSCONCED WITHIN THE sprawling oasis of Franschhoek’s celebrated Babylonstoren farm – amid the awardwinning restaurants and wine cellar, the luxurious hotel accommodation and the verdant labyrinthine 5-hectare garden – lies the farm’s exquisite Garden Spa. A living extension of the garden itself, the spa is dressed in lush greenery to intimately reflect the seasons, while various lei water channels lend a soundtrack of gently burbling water to the deeply tranquil atmosphere. In addition to the variety of spa treatments already on o er, Babylonstoren has greatly expanded this oasis to include a Hot Spa and a varied array of exciting and indulgent treats.

Elegantly designed next to the bamboo garden in a light-filled wellness space, the Hot Spa features a steam room, sauna and salt room crafted entirely from blocks of raw Himalayan salt, believed to hold therapeutic properties. But the crowning glory of the new spa is its pools; two circular vitality pools united by a 16-metre channel of water. Here, guests can steep themselves in the deliciously

warm water of this indoor-outdoor pool environment before or after treatment. For those who believe enough in ice-cold water’s physical and mental benefits to brave it, two smaller mosaic-tiled alcoves in the pool are filled with bitingly cold yet refreshing running water, o ering a divine contrast to the rest of the hot pool.

Adjacent to the Hot Spa is an authentic hammam – an ancient Turkish cleansing room made of floor-to-ceiling marble and tiled in blue mosaic – and a Rasul chamber, where guests can experience a traditional Middle Eastern mud ritual consisting of mud scrubs for exfoliation and deep soaks for “radical skin nourishment”. Alternatively (or additionally), guests can indulge in Babylonstoren’s Garden Spa’s signature deep-tissue bamboo massage, a deluxe pedicure or a wide variety of bespoke facials or yield themselves to the embrace of a hydrating wrap filled with fresh herbs from the garden. Finally, what could be a better conclusion to the intuitive and thoughtfully orchestrated therapies by the Garden Spa than a healthy lunch at Babel or the Greenhouse Restaurant?

No matter which treatments or experiences guests embark upon here, this oasis within an oasis is a place to yield to the healing power of nature and her elements. And, truly, if there were ever an earthly approximation of the fabled lands of Shangri-la, Babylonstoren’s newly expanded Garden Spa would be it.

This luxurious cleanser is a clay-based product that lightly foams, exfoliates and detoxifies.

Bentonite clay acts as a superfine exfoliator while drawing out toxins.

CLEANSE THOROUGHLY1

The simple act of washing your face should be the first step in your daily routine. Be sure to cleanse thoroughly to remove impurities, dead cells and any makeup or sunscreen that may be stuck to your skin. Ideally, you should cleanse your face in the morning and evening as this will help keep your skin looking and feeling radiant and prevent your pores from becoming blocked with dirt.

To keep your skin bright and clean, it’s best to remove your makeup before you begin the cleansing process. Then, use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, as extreme temperatures could irritate. Carefully rub your fingers in an upward direction – this will help to boost circulation – and don’t forget your neck and jawline, as these areas are also susceptible to the build-up of dirt. When you’re done, gently pat dry your skin; leaving your face wet can contribute to dryness.

When choosing cleansing products, consider your skin type. Concerns like dryness, excess oil and acne can all be addressed with the right combination of ingredients. Oily skin, for example, is best suited to a foaming liquid cleanser formulated to break down dirt and oil in the pores, while dry and red skin usually benefits from a cream wash with hydrating properties. You might consider a lightweight oil cleanser if you have particularly sensitive skin, while mature skin usually does well with a nourishing melting balm.

TARGET SPECIFIC ISSUES2

One of the best things you can do when building a healthy skincare routine is to incorporate active ingredients that protect your skin from day-to-day damage. You’ll find these ingredients in serums, which can address specific concerns, like fine lines, pigmentation and redness, or can simply be used to keep the e ects of environmental damage at bay. Look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which keeps the skin strong; retinol and peptides, which keep the skin firm and elastic; and colloidal sulfur, which reduces inflammation. To apply your serum, use your fingertips and softly smooth the product over your face and neck. Don’t rub too hard, simply allow the product to absorb into the skin.

If you’re looking for a concentrated targeting treatment, another great option is an oil. Oils help to protect the skin’s moisture barrier and can be used to address specific concerns, depending on the type you choose. Apply a few drops to your face and gently pat it onto your face and neck. If you have specific areas you would like to target, you can concentrate your application on these places.

DON’T FORGET YOUR EYES

The skin around the eyes – which tends to be very thin – is often vulnerable to issues like fine lines, pu ness, hyperpigmentation and dark circles. In fact, this area of skin is particularly prone to dryness because it loses water much faster than other parts of the face. Because it is so delicate, it’s a good idea to give this area extra attention daily. If you struggle with inflammation, choose soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. Dark circles can be reduced with vitamin C, niacinamide and kojic acid, all of which work to brighten the skin. Be sure to avoid fragranced products, which can cause stinging and irritation. To apply your eye cream, place a small amount onto the back of your hand and then dip your finger into the cream to make a semi-circle of dots in the target area. Begin below the inner part of your eyebrow, and move sideways and up along the bone that encircles your eye. Gently pat the cream onto your skin as you go, and ensure you don’t rub it in, as this could irritate the skin and eyes.

MOISTURISE

It’s no secret that regular moisturising is key to keeping the skin in tip-top shape. But the specific product you choose will depend on your skin type and any concerns you have. Lightweight gels are usually a good option for oily skin, while classic lotions are good for normal and combination skin. Dry skin benefits from a formula that is especially nourishing and oil-based creams are an excellent choice. A moisturising balm will serve you well if you have very dry, sensitive or inflamed skin. A small, pea-sized amount of moisturiser is usually enough to use each time. Apply the product to your face and neck with your fingertips, rubbing softly in circular motions.

PREVENT SUN DAMAGE5

The importance of daily sun protection simply cannot be overstated. Even if you spend most of your day indoors, it’s advisable that you apply an SPF of at least 30. Many day creams multitask as sunscreens, which makes it easy to make sun protection part of your regime.

If you’re ba ed when it comes to choosing a sunscreen, bear in mind most formulas contain chemical ingredients, which are absorbed into the skin and provide protection from the e ects of ultraviolet light; and physical ingredients that remain on the surface of the skin and prevent damage from UV rays. Ideally, it’s best to opt for a formula containing a combination of these ingredients as this will help protect your skin from UVA and UVB damage.

TRY AN OCCASIONAL EXFOLIATOR OR MASK 6

While it’s not necessary to use exfoliators and face masks every day – every two weeks or so is su cient – these products can give your skin the boost it needs from time to time. Masks are formulated to address specific concerns and work by trapping ingredients and moisture in the skin. This, in turn, creates a film that moisturises or exfoliates the skin, depending on the ingredients, and allows an intensive dose of ingredients to enter the skin quickly. Although there is no substitute for proper skincare, these products can complement your regime and contribute to healthierlooking skin.

When it comes to exfoliating, there are two options: mechanical exfoliation involves the use of a brush or scrub to remove dead skin cells, while chemical exfoliation uses chemicals to dissolve skin cells. Whichever method you prefer, ensure you are gentle with your skin. Apply the product in small, circular movements for about 30 seconds before rinsing o with lukewarm water. Where beautymeets tech

THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY is continually evolving, and with advancements in the field comes a shift towards digitalisation. Some of the most modern trends in beauty include the use of technology like 3D printing, LED light therapy and radiofrequency, and even the simple act of cleansing has made a move towards high-tech with devices that feature T-sonic pulsations. Just how do these cleansing devices work? And are they worth the hype?

THE TECHNOLOGY

The world’s softest facial cleansing brush, the FOREO Luna is well worth a try. The device is made of soft, bacteria-resistant silicone and designed to remove dirt and oil from the skin e ectively. The cleanser features FOREO’s trademark T-sonic pulsations, which travel through the layers of the skin, bringing oxygen to the surface and temporarily dilating the pores to get rid of impurities. The cleansing brush is bacteria-resistant, making it much more hygienic than its nylon counterpart.

THE BEAUTY BENEFITS

The velvety touchpoints exfoliate dead skin cells for smootherlooking skin, while the device’s deep cleansing ability helps achieve a generally more refreshed appearance. In fact, cleansing with the brush is an excellent first step in any skincare routine as it enables the ingredients in other products – such as creams, serums and masks – to absorb better and penetrate deep into the skin.

As well as its cleansing abilities, the Luna also relaxes facial muscle tension points, smoothing out fine lines and toning the skin. As an added bonus, the device can be flipped over and used as a massage device to boost circulation and achieve glowing, more radiant skin.

TAILOR YOUR REGIME

One of the benefits of the Luna is that it is available in di erent variations to suit normal, combination and sensitive skins. Once you have chosen the cleansing brush that best suits you, you can further personalise it in the FOREO app by choosing from a selection of intensities, as well as targeted firming and massage routines. WOWBROWS

There’s nothing quite like a perfectly groomed pair of brows to frame the eyes and pull together a look, but there’s more to it than tweezing and tinting when it comes to getting them just right. There’ve been countless fads over the years, and now contemporary trends range from minimal and natural to bold and big. Here’s our round-up of the most popular trends set out for 2023.

AU NATUREL

This easy-to-achieve look is all about working with what you’ve got. To get the look, simply stick to your natural shape and clean up stray bits for a groomed, minimal aesthetic. Natural brows have some texture, and while they should be neat, there’s room for some softness. A bit of natural flu ness helps to frame the eyes beautifully, while some subtle volume can be achieved by brushing the brows upwards.

Give your face definition with well-groomed brows that work with your aesthetic.

BROW LAMINATION + FLEXING

Brow lamination is the year’s most popular eyebrow trend. The look is characterised by brushed-up brows for a full, symmetrical and ultra-groomed look. During the lamination process, the brows are set in shape with a product formulated to straighten any curved hairs for a slick and shiny look. The treatment is semi-permanent and achieves perfectly placed brows for months.

Eyebrow flexing took o towards the end of 2021 and has continued to grow in popularity. It’s a cosmetic procedure that achieves similar results to brow lamination but requires less time. During the process, a serum is applied to the brows to open the cuticle scales and change the shape or direction of the hairs.

BUSH BABY

Flu y bushbaby brows have become increasingly popular, and the trend is set to stay. The look is achieved by brushing the brow hairs upwards but leaving them fairly relaxed and natural to avoid harsh edges. It’s a great look for those who want to save time because there’s no need for pencilling, and maintenance is minimal.

BLEACHED BROWS

Reminiscent of a look that was big in the ’90s, bleached brows have made a comeback. It’s a bold move and one that is best achieved with professional help. Also known as ‘invisible brows’, bleached brows are a hit on the runway, with models like Bella and Gigi Hadid embracing the aesthetic at recent shows.

If you like the look but prefer something a little more lowkey, barely there brows are a great alternative. The look was popular on the spring runways and involved a brow that was just slightly lighter than the model’s hair colour. Light brows are more subtle than fully bleached brows and pair well with minimal makeup and fresh skin.

COLOUR POP

This one is for those who love to have fun and experiment. The trend calls for creativity and allows for all shades, from bright blue or a hint of lavender to high-impact pinks. To take it a step further, you might consider the trend that took TikTok by storm this year, blinged-up brows featuring rhinestones and glitter. It’s a good look for the party season and an easy way to add a pop of colour or shimmer to an outfit.

BROW SHAPING

When it comes to brow shaping, it’s all about the straight brow. The look is characterised by full brows with a minimal arch, with a subtle drop at the tail end. Reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s classic style and embraced by contemporary celebs like Kendall Jenner and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the look is sleek and sophisticated.

The Hypersphere Mini

A personal masseuse in the palm of your hand.

Iused to think the privilege of having a personal masseuse, who travels with you wherever you go, was a dream reserved only for the stupendously wealthy, like the Mark Zuckerbergs and Elon Musks of the world. But with the advent of the Hypersphere Mini by Hyperice, a massage ball that fits snugly in your hand, that prospect is taken from wistful fantasy to reality. And because our jobs are so incredibly hard, we were tasked with checking out this pint-sized (yet powerful) massage ball.

How it works is simple. First, sit hunched over for an extended period of time. That’ll be easy because #work. Alternatively, actually use that gym contract you’ve been paying for the last three years (and be sure to overdo it on the treadmill). Failing these, accidentally fall asleep on the couch in a weird position. Oops! Are you in pain? Does it feel like there’s a fork stuck in your neck? Is your body sti er than the summer southeasterly winds in Cape Town? Cue the Hypersphere Mini by Hyperice!

Now, don’t let the compact size of this little massage ball fool you. With a

diameter of just 8.89 cm, the Hypersphere Mini has been specifically engineered to take up minimal space but still pack a wallop of power. So, your next step is to whip it out of your handbag, satchel or carry-on suitcase, select a low, medium or high speed, and press its textured surface against the o ending muscle or area. Proceed to sigh in abject pleasure, but not too loudly; you don’t want to elicit strange glances from your neighbours.

The Hypersphere Mini’s size also makes it rather talented at targeting hard-to-reach places; it’s the perfect companion for long stretches in the o ce, in transit, on the couch or during international travel. On that subject, this massage ball weighs only 340 grams and is TSA approved for carry-on.

So, there you have it: a compact, easily portable, powerful personal masseuse you can take with you anywhere in the world, even if your annual income doesn’t a ord you the luxury of buying islands in the South Pacific or going on joyrides in Space.

3. Transfer the dough into a greased bowl and grease the top of your dough with a little more vegan butter. Cover and set aside until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

4. In a bowl, combine your butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract and cocoa to make a spreadable paste.

CHRISTMAS SNOWFLAKE BREAD

Serves 8

5. Knead your risen dough back into shape and then divide it into four smaller pieces. Roll out the first piece of dough onto some baking paper.

6. Place a medium-sized plate or bowl over the rolled-out dough and trim o the excess dough to make it a perfect circle. Roughly spread a heaped tablespoon worth of filling onto the dough but leave some clean space around the edges.

7. Roll out another piece of dough in a circle shape and transfer the dough by placing a rolling pin in the middle of the dough, folding it over the pin, and then lifting it to place over the first layer. Spread the filling and repeat.

8. For the fourth dough round, don’t spread any filling as this is the top of the bread.

9. Place a small cup or bowl in the middle and gently press to make an indent in the centre. Cut the dough eight times, starting from quarters, into 8ths, and then 16ths.

10. Then pick up two sections, twist them away from each other, press the ends together, and make a point shape. Repeat until you have no sections left. Your snowflake bread should have eight sections.

11. Brush the bread with melted vegan butter and lightly dust with castor sugar. Cover with a kitchen towel and allow to rise again for another hour.

12. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

13. Transfer the bread to a Le Creuset Signature Shallow Casserole (still on the baking paper). Bake (without the lid) for 30 minutes until golden.

14. Dust with a bit of icing sugar or drizzle with a thin coconut glaze. Serve warm.

FROZEN ICE CREAM SUMMER

INGREDIENTS

375g raspberries

500g blueberries

600g strawberries

3–4 tbsp icing sugar

4 litres vanilla ice cream

METHOD

1. Lightly mash 150g raspberries with a fork and 2 tbsp. sifted icing sugar. In a small saucepan, add 360g blueberries and 2 tbsp. icing sugar with a tablespoon or two of water and bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and mash with a fork or masher. Do the same with the 400g chopped strawberries. Place the warm berries in the fridge to cool, keeping them separate from each other. Reserve the remaining whole berries for garnish.

2. Slightly soften 1 litre of vanilla ice cream at a time, so that it is easily spreadable with a spatula. Line the base of a Le Creuset Bakeware 20cm Springform Cake Tin with a few layers of cling wrap before clipping the sides of the tin to the base to secure the cling wrap. Spoon the litre of ice cream into the base and top with raspberries. Place in the freezer to set, repeat with one more layer of ice cream

FRUIT CAKE

and top with the chopped strawberries. Place back in the freezer to set overnight.

3. Repeat the same process with another cake tin and the remaining ice cream, but this time, arrange the blueberries in the middle layer and leave the top layer of ice cream bare. Set overnight in the freezer.

4. To unmould, wrap the tin in a hot cloth and run a hot palette knife around the edge of the cake and tin to help loosen the ice cream. Release the tin’s clip to unmould and place the strawberry and raspberry ice cream layer on a Le Creuset Footed Cake Stand. Top with the blueberry layer.

5. Once presented and to serve, separate the two layers before cutting into them for easier and safer slicing. Top with remaining berries to serve.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A DESSERT WITH A DIFFERENCE THAT WILL COOL YOU DOWN BUT IS STILL FULL OF FESTIVE FLAVOURS, THIS ICE CREAM CAKE IS JUST THE THING.

Since 1925, Le Creuset has been renowned as the colourful French companion in kitchens across the globe. Its Enamelled Cast Iron cookware, known for its excellent heat retention, has been produced in the same French foundry for almost a century and embodies the buyit-for-life principle of quality items. When it comes to colour, there’s really something for everyone. The iconic Flame was the first colour Le Creuset introduced back in the 1920s, and since then, the range has grown to include more and more gorgeous shades. Le Creuset also offers colourful oven-to-table Stoneware, including its latest collection of colours representing the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. Earth represents the colour Cayenne. Air represents the colour Meringue. Fire represents the colour Nectar. And water represents the colour Coastal Blue.

Stopsmellandthe rosé

he drier version of that delicious blush wine known as rosé has been one of the success stories in the Cape wine industry. In fact, there are more quality rosé’s than ever on o er, and sales increase year by year. I, for one, am not surprised; South Africa’s climate and our get-up-and-go outdoorsy lifestyle makes rosé a perfect wine for the national thirst.

Provence, that southern part of France characterised by sea, olive groves, lavender and seafood, is the world’s central point for rosé. It is made by the hundreds of millions of litres and from May to September, a glass of rosé is found on every table, picnic spot and al fresco restaurant.

This is also the region where the making of rosé has been perfected. Red Mediterranean grape varieties such as Grenache, Cinsaut and Shiraz are picked and the juice is immediately bled from the coloured skins, allowing just a slight blush colour liquid to make its way to the fermentation tank. Ferment, keep it on lees for a few months, and voilà, you have a dry wine bearing a subtle hue ranging from pale onion skin to salmon pink to one of the gorgeous light pink lipstick shades that were so in vogue in 1960’s Hollywood.

/ FOOD & WINE /

A LOCAL PIONEER

For a long time, South African rosés were made sweet and sticky, the colour more candy-floss than the blossom duskiness of the classics. But over the past 15 years, more-and-more wineries have gone the classic Provençal route of o ering dry rosés with a more refined colour. It is not just about the hue, though. Remember, these wines are made from red grapes, and even if the time spent on the colour-enhancing skins is brief, the wines do grasp some lovely berry flavours and a hint of tannin to give them a presence in the mouth.

What local producers also have going for them is the national red grape of South Africa, namely Pinotage, a variety that makes brilliant rosés. Delheim Estate in Stellenbosch was one of the pioneers of Pinotage rosé, and thanks to its success, continues to be one of the leaders in Cape rosé production.

The Delheim Pinotage Rosé has a cherryblossom colour and what stands out for me is its bracing dryness. As one who enjoys all things cold and refreshing — including beer and gin-and-tonic — the Delheim Rosé can be found in my fridge for most of the summer months. And I have no qualms about adding an ice cube or two to the glass to increase

the pleasure, as this is the kind of wine for drinking with wanton abandon.

Bone-dry, the wine has subtle notes of plums and crunchy berries with a bracing finish full of zest. It is the ideal partner for sushi, especially if you like to go heavy on the wasabi, and it is truly summer in a glass.

THE WOW FACTOR

The world-famous Kanonkop Estate, like Delheim situated on Stellenbosch’s Simonsberg, is known for robust red wines, including the Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style that is arguably the country’s finest o ering. But this iconic farm could not let the opportunity of tapping into the lucrative rosé market pass. Its Kanonkop Pinotage Rosé has become one of the most popular wines in this category.

Sourcing the finest Pinotage grapes, the wine is oozed o the skins, the ferment and other winemaking stages presided over by Kanonkop’s wizard winemaker Abrie Beeslaar. The result is an astounding rosé that I would like to see in a line-up of the best the world has to o er. For besides being a most charming pink wine, this has a true taste of the Cape.

Sure, being of local DNA, Pinotage does give the wine a wow factor with the

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

vivid, bright berry profile and an underlying savoury character. But along with this elegant cool freshness comes a brisk note of herbaceous fynbos together with a saline, maritime thread.

Even served ice-cold and merrily glugged, the wine has a discernible refinement. It has a true polished class, which shows that despite its glitzy, fashionable image, rosé does deserve a place on the porch of wine greatness.

AN UNEXPECTED JOY

For something completely di erent, there is the Diemersdal Sauvignon Rosé. Diemersdal proprietor and winemaker Thys Louw is a sucker for convention, but now and again, he goes o -kilter, following his nose with successful results.

So, Diemersdal Sauvignon Rosé eschews the classic route in the winemaking process. Two Sauvignon grape varieties are used: the red Cabernet Sauvignon and its white partner Sauvignon Blanc. Incidentally, Cabernet Sauvignon as a variety resulted in France as a cross between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, making the weighty Cabernet the o spring of the fresh white Blanc.

Sauvignon Blanc forms the foundations of the Diemersdal Sauvignon Rosé, and the pale garnet hue results from Thys simply adding a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon to the white wine. The result is a fullish rosé, dry but oozing blackcurrant and cherry while riding the characteristic wave of nettle and gooseberry freshness Sauvignon Blanc is known for. Invigorating and juicy, this wine is brilliant with fish o the braai or a spicy curry.

But as we rosé lovers know, one does not need guidance or parameters to enjoy this style of wine, as a rosé of any name brings delight.

Forget eggnog, brandy-doused Christmas cake, and cheeky kisses under the mistletoe. As wonderful as these festive indulgences are, not even they can rival that ultimate, end-of-the-year accoutrement: a bottle of L’Ormarins Private Cuvée Cap Classique. Now just imagine what you could do with a case of this exquisite bubbly.

Every bottle of L’Ormarins Private Cuvée is the loving child of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes sourced from Anthonij Rupert’s Altima vineyards in Elandskloof, where excellent soil conditions and aspect nurture fruit of an exceptional calibre. The bottle itself is beautiful enough to be used as an ornament, although, of course, that would be ridiculous… or would it?

Inside, the wine shows a pale onion skin in hue with a vigorous bead of fine bubbles. On the nose, toasty notes of sourdough burst forth with underlying red berries and stone fruit. The palate delivers waves of tangy and refreshing lemon and marmalade – vibrant and fresh –with creamy, rich notes of yeast that broaden into the festive bouquet of flavours promised by the nose. At the last, a lingering finish concludes a sip of this statuesque, sumptuous and elegant bubbly wine.

The L’Ormarins Private Cuvée Cap Classique is indeed the perfect accompaniment to every festive occasion, so try your luck and win a case!

SIZZLING SUMMER ESCAPES

We’ve made it through the year, so it’s finally time to take advantage of the summer weather for that well-deserved break. Travel journalist Jared Ruttenberg shares three of his favourites in Cape Town, Shaka’s Rock and the Cederberg.

140 / TRAVEL /

ONE & ONLY

CAPE TOWN

With unparalleled views of the Waterfront and Table Mountain, One&Only is perhaps the Mother City’s most desirable location. The impressive resort hardly needs an introduction. On a recent visit, I was able to peep behind the curtains at what it’s like to stay at the luxury resort.

The gorgeously appointed mountain-facing suites are where you want to stay, especially as their balconies deeply drink in those iconic Mother City views. A recent refurb means the rooms feel fabulous and fresh, particularly with the locally inspired artwork.

Among One&Only’s various dining options, a meal at Nobu sits at the pinnacle. My visit happily coincided with Chef Hervé Courtot’s visit – he holds the title of Corporate Head Chef at Nobu Hotels – looking after the group’s almost 50 restaurants. Working my way through the chef’s six-course Omakase menu is a Japanese-inspired fine dining journey of note.

A One&Only ritual is sitting in the Vista Lounge –

appropriately named after its front-row seat to the Cape Town views – and sampling the four new signature cocktails. Following the tale of the Four Watchers, a Xhosa legend that speaks of Table Mountain’s birth, the new drinks Sun, Earth, Fire and Wind are tributes to the gods in the story.

Crossing the canal from the resort lobby, you enter the island where the pool, rooms, suites and spa are situated. Friends have raved about the One&Only Spa, and I discovered why; it is nothing short of a haven of peace and calm. Try the two-hour Mountain Tonic treatment, followed by some relaxation in the aroma-steam room, sauna and thermal suite.

I’ve always thought the One&Only might be too big for me. After three days, I realised there’s an urban sanctuary waiting to welcome you beyond the grand entrance, along with a surprising homeliness and personable service.

SALA BEACH HOUSE

KWAZULU-NATAL

The opening of Sala Beach House comes at a poignant time when KZN needs support. The recent riots and devastating storms have left their mark, but despite this, a brand new five-star hotel is gently making waves atop Shaka’s Rock with unspoilt ocean views.

Sala Beach House is too intimate a space to be called a hotel. Picture barefoot elegance and gownwearing homeliness. With the lush vegetation and zen-like styling, you could easily be forgiven for thinking this is a tropical destination.

The property was purchased in 2017 and extensively renovated. Thanks to the exciting vision and discerning touches of co-owners Craig and Gert, Sala is undeniably a décor feast. Walking around, you’re embraced with a distinctly Durban scene but with bits of Bali and hints of Havana. If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend hours admiring, touching, smelling and – with all the tempting cuisine, most certainly – tasting.

With only seven rooms and a separate threebedroom villa, it is small enough to rent exclusively. Within a day of observing my preferences, the team automatically shifted their service; my favourite wine was poured each time, and activities were based on my interests.

Sala enjoys direct beach access onto the blue flag Thompson’s Bay and is just a short walk from the famed Hole-in-the-Wall. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sala, where peace and privacy have the final say, soon becomes one of the country’s most talked about boutique hotels.

DORINGBOS FARM CEDERBERG

In one of Cederberg’s northernmost parts is a property that sets the benchmark for isolation and eclectic elegance. Doringbos is a vast farm set in the transition zone where the rugged 500-million-year-old mountains begin to give way to the wild expanse of the Karoo.

Exploring the property is a never-ending visual feast: every corner, cupboard and wall is filled with wonders. Best come endowed with a generous sense of curiosity as you encounter a playfulness that almost touches on absurdism at times. The accommodation cottages are arranged around the central farmhouse, each grand in its own way. Mine sported dark textures and tones, replete with Coco Chanel fragrances.

There is, of course, no shortage of sunshine, and when you need respite from the heat, there are three pools in which to cool down and two wood-fired tubs for cooler evenings. The Doringbos River is perennial, o ering swimming and paddling year-round.

There’s plenty to do in the wild landscape when you’re not relaxing

two wood-fired hot tubs for leisurely soaks. Even with a total capacity of 20 guests, there’s enough space for everyone.

The farm’s vlei pan is a short walk from the main house, where you can watch the resident wild game arrive for a sunset drink. There is even a luxurious tent set up on the vlei. In this wild setting, with fires roaring at sunset, we created our own little Doringbos Burning Man; the distant oryx found our eccentricity somewhat amusing.

It’s a place where, after four days of acclimatising, you’ll still be in disbelief that such a unique place exists. But perhaps these spaces make for the best escapes to transport us to a completely di erent world.

WRX-citement

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The new WRX aims to provide a thrilling driving experience while keeping its occupants safe, making it a fun family sedan.

Afamily sedan is seldom associated with fun. With the WRX, Subaru has always aimed to disprove this notion.

The firm maintains the fifth iteration to don this badge represents the core values of its brand, with one of these being ultimate driving performance. However, for the Japanese automaker, exhilarating dynamics must go hand in hand with safety, another pillar in the company’s blueprint for building motor vehicles.

The new WRX certainly looks the part of a speedy family sedan. The most notable design cues are Subaru’s signature hexagonal front grille — flanked by tapered LED headlamps incorporating daytime-running lights — and bonnet scoop. A spoiler is sited atop the boot. The rear bumper features an integrated di user. The WRX sits on 18inch alloy wheels. A range of exterior paint colours is available including Ceramic White, Crystal Black Silica, Ice Silver Metallic and, for those wanting a pop of colour, Sapphire Blue, Ignition Red and Solar Orange Pearl.

Based on Subaru’s Global Platform, the WRX measures 75 mm longer and 30 mm wider than its predecessor. The increase in dimensions has translated to a more spacious cabin. Front and rear passengers have 30 mm and 40 mm more shoulder room,

WRX-citement

respectively. The luggage capacity is rated at 423 litres.

One engine option is employed across the two-strong local line-up. The 2.4-litre fourcylinder can be had with a six-speed manual gearbox and CVT, each transferring 202 kW and 350 Nm of torque to all four wheels. Although the manual might provide a more exhilarating driving experience, the CVT will arguably be the transmission for most. However, if you are still on the fence about this type of transmission, don’t be; Subaru makes some of the best CVTs on the market. The manual model has a claimed fuel consumption figure of 9.9 L/100 km, and the CVT-equipped variant has an average fuel consumption figure of 8.5 L/100 km.

Inside, an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage. The portrait-orientated high-resolution display incorporates niceties such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and sat-nav. Not all functions are operated via touch. Subaru has retained analogue controls for the volume and temperature to ensure distraction-free driving. A 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

is included. The eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat (with additional lumbar support) and front and rear passenger pews feature heating functionality for those cold winter days.

As mentioned, Subaru places a focus on safety. The suite of safety items includes eight airbags. There’s also a system that monitors the driver. If the driver takes their eyes o the road or shows signs of drowsiness, this set-up alerts the person seated behind the multifunction steering wheel. In addition, the range-topping tS ES CVT model ships with the firm’s most advanced EyeSight 4.0 system, featuring adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency steering, lane departure prevention and tra c sign recognition.

The new WRX is priced from R799 000 for the manual derivative to R877 000 for the CVT model. The pricing includes Subaru’s three-year/ 75 000 km maintenance plan and a five-year/150 000 km warranty.
