e’ve come a long way from where we started, and we’re beyond proud of how Southern Vines has grown, and how it has evolved. This edition sees us take a bolder approach, with loads of fresh colours and design aspects to take inspiration from. We’ve included a well-rounded collection of lifestyle & leisure features to awaken the senses with an adventurous twist to nudge us to appreciate and strive for only the best. My favourite ensemble would be that of photographer Krisjan Rossouw with his rendition from a different dimension – I’m excited to see where his magnificent fineart flair will see him in the years to come. Thank you to all the readers that have made contact with me, we love the feedback! lauren@southernvines.co.za

ART SCENE We spotlight three contemporary, Cape Town-based artists, who are well-positioned to rise to new heights this year. Watch this space.

KAREN CRONJE One of SA’s best kept art secrets, Karen Cronje, took a huge leap by becoming a full-time artist three years ago, after a career teaching Senior School Art for 16 years. Best-known for her layered landscapes, in particular mountains, which have inspired her from her youth, Cronje aims to create intimate moments which reflect her personal art making process. By her own admission, Cronje’s approach is intuitive, working on several paintings at any given time, spontaneously shifting between them until they take shape. With an insightful approach, Cronje explores pertinent issues around the continuous struggle over land in South Africa, yet ironically, her work is often delicately luxuriant. Born in 1975, Cronje holds a BA in Visual Arts (cum laude) (1997) and an MA in Visual Arts (2001) from the University of Stellenbosch. Her collections can be found at 99Loop Art Gallery in Loop Street, Cape Town www.99loop.co.za

ART WHAT’S HOT

DION CUPIDO South African born, sensational, and self-taught - Dion Cupido, the accidental artist, serendipitously discovered his unrevealed abilities while helping a friend with a school project. Today, he’s a force to be reckoned with in the art world. Abstract in his approach, with a love affair for AfricanPop Art Portraits and Urban Escapes, Cupido’s medium of choice, industrial ink, is eclectic and most certainly unusual. In the early stages, Cupido renounced his initial exploration of realism, wrestled with flawless idealism and then began producing expressive, bold, abstract pieces with purpose. His work, true to its genre (in his case industrial paint and oils), possess the authenticity which he believes mankind has to a certain extent, disregarded. Cupido’s career kicked off with an exhibit at the Pea-Nut Gallery in 1998, and less than a decade later he’s undoubtedly made his mark on the contemporary Cape Town art scene. Visit the Worldart Gallery in Church Street, Cape Town to view some of Dion’s work www.worldart.co.za

WHAT’S HOT ART

ANASTASIA SARANTINOU What started out as an experiment in mixing media, became the indelible core of Anastasia Sarantinou’s work. Born in Bloemfontein in 1965, Anastasia pursued art studies, majoring in printmaking and specialising in silk screening. With photography, column writing and Chairman of the South African Arts Association under her belt, she moved to Cape Town to become a full-time artist, and now works from a Muizenberg studio where she teaches and makes art. Influenced by her printmaking background Anastasia experiments with different materials which have become the core of her work - to create layers and interest. The artist draws on her everyday life for the subject matter of her works; a contemporary mix of seascapes, still life and portraits. Sarantinou’s tenacity has taken her places, including Germany and Holland, where she has sold many of her works to overseas art lovers. About her paintings, she says “the entire process is just as satisfying as the outcome.” Anastasia’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com SV

LA MOTTE MUSEUM CELEBRATES A MASTER

artist

Art, wine - taste and interpret. La Motte pays tribute to Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886-1957), considered an old master by many, in an exhibition where art, wine and history combine to celebrate the life and work of the late, legendary artist. JACQUELINE MILLS

THE OEUVRE The year-long exhibition, on display until January 2018, at the La Motte Wine Estate in the Franschhoek Valley, celebrates Pierneef’s contribution to South African art and history, through his intimate portrayal of Southern African landscape and architecture – making a fitting enhancement to La Motte’s core cultural-historical collection. The exhibition marks the sixtieth commemoration of the famed artist’s death, in conjunction with his daughter Marita’s 90th birthday celebration. Marita is not only an avid collector of her father’s works but a longstanding La Motte family friend. The artworks have been painstakingly curated from both private and public collections. Nature and architectural themes dominate Pierneef’s oeuvre, with over one hundred works displayed alongside an impressive assemblage of contextual information and memorabilia, showcasing the artist’s story. Visitors to the museum will experience a unique and engaging

his daughter, Marita Bailey. In 2009 La Motte curated 42 of the sought-after original works from Marita’s private collection of her father’s artworks from the United Kingdom to South Africa. These included preliminary sketches to accomplished oil paintings, dating back to 1908. Accompanying the works were personal memorabilia from their family home, which featured in the La Motte Museum as part of the ‘La Motte Redefined’, a project that resulted in the internationallyaccredited Wine Tourism offering, including the Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant and the La Motte Museum, as it stands today.

THE MILIEU Situated in Franschhoek, La Motte is an enchanting destination, possessing historic charm and beauty and surrounded by extensive vineyards and dramatic backdrops. Apart from its incomparable beauty, La Motte is home to the finest wines, gourmet cuisine and a cultural-historical museum where Pierneef’s exhibition is staged.

THE MAN HIMSELF display of varying themes, subjects and styles spanning Pierneef’s 55 years of artistry, which led to him being awarded two honorary doctorates, an honorary membership, as well as a Medal of Honour for Painting from the SA Academy of Science & Art.

THE ALLIANCE La Motte’s alliance with Pierneef dates back to 2002 with the creation of the estate’s premium Pierneef Wine Collection. The wine packaging design was inspired by Pierneef’s linocuts, themselves a gift to La Motte’s owner, Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg. La Motte obtained permission for the rights to use Pierneef’s name and prints on the wine labels from

Apart from his legacy and works of art, Pierneef’s wish, years before his death, defined the source of his inspiration, “Bury me under a camel thorn tree, with its straight manly character guarding me, and its roots deep in the soil of Africa”. He died on 4 October 1957. His distinctive style will always be definitive when evaluating African landscape painting. SV

Pay a visit A Tribute to the life and work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886-1957) is currently on display until 3 January 2018. Entrance is free. The La Motte Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00 For winter hours visit www.la-motte.com T +27 (0)21 876 8850

first for Franschhoek, Marigold is an authentic Indian restaurant located in the main street at Heritage Square. Headed by chef Vanie Padayachee, the restaurant promises something new to the town’s culinary scene, with authentic Indian dishes, and a range of exotic flavours on offer. Chef Vanie visited India to experience the cuisine firsthand, and the menu is a nod to the origins of the food she serves.

THE VIBE The interior of the restaurant is stylish and simple, with exposed brickwork, an original timber ceiling and mid-century dining chairs in yellow and orange leather. The clean design is complemented by Johannes Scott ceramics on the walls, subtle pops of colour, and big, glass windows looking over the street and courtyard. Loads of natural light softens the interior, and if the weather is good, there’s the option of sitting in the outdoor area. Here, you can soak up the energy of the town in a relaxed setting. Chef Vanie brings with her a wealth of experience -she worked most recently as part of the Le Quartier Français culinary team and has also been on the opening teams of a number of restaurants and a cookery school in Prince Albert.

THE FOOD Beautiful setting aside, the food at Marigold takes centre stage with a menu that offers an extensive range of North Indian-inspired dishes. It starts off

and creamy textured combination of whole urad lentils, simmered over a low heat, tempered with whole spices, and finished with butter and fresh coriander. An additional order of freshly baked traditional bread, rice, and salad compliment the dishes perfectly. You’ll want to leave space for one of the desserts on offer, which include Indian favourites like kulfi, an ice cream made with boiled milk, sugar and fragrant spices; and phirni, a creamy dessert made with ground rice and mango.

THE DRINKS

with savouries like aloo tikki chole chaat, a popular street food from New Delhi made with shallow-fried potato patties served with a chickpea curry and mint chutney; golgappa and tamarind pani, crispy pockets filled with potato, onion, chickpeas and served with cold tamarind water; and palak chaat, battered spinach leaves topped with sweetened curd, tamarind, chilli and onion. The choice of curries, biryanis and tandoori is huge, and if you’re after something meaty, you’ll enjoy options like the lamb kebab or the achari gosht, which is beef in a traditional spicy pickled gravy. Seafood lovers will love the masala prawns, a delicacy from the coastal Malabar region of India, or the nimbu machli tikka, line fish marinated in traditional tikka marinade with lemon and curry leaves, and basted with mustard oil before it is grilled in the clay oven. And, of course, the vegetarian options are many and varied, from the baingan bharta, roasted aubergines infused with a distinct aromatic smoky charcoal flavour, to the dal makhani, one of North India’s most popular lentil dishes -- it’s a smooth, rich

With its prime spot in the winelands town of Franschhoek, Marigold naturally has a selection of local wine on offer to match the aromatic and spicy cuisine. The wine list is carefully curated, and changes with the menu, but always includes a good choice of Méthode Cape Classiques, reds, white and rosés. Also on the list is a range of white varieties that have been selected as an aperitif because they are highly aromatic in style and tend to pair well with spicy dishes. Some of these include the Cederberg Private Cellar Bukettraube 2016 with its apricot and floral fynbos notes that work well with spice and bold Asian flavours; the Thelema Riesling 2016 for its perfumed nose that shows spice, yellow fruit and lime; and the Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer 2015, which has a surprising combination of rose petal, litchi, cucumber and summer melon that matches nicely with mildly spicy food. urrounded by acres of manicured gardens with lush green vegetation and dams, the property’s 2000m² size within an estate, is a kingdom unto itself. Visitors are welcomed by a gently curved driveway and cobbled pavers that coddle a magnificent water feature. A divinely feminine figure rises from the water, her gaze fixed towards a dramatic Romeo and Juliet balcony. The garden is planted with colourful bougainvillea and perfumed foliage while latticed vines decorate the walls of the house. A thoroughly romantic scene is set.

A GRAND ENTRANCE Entranceway doors, embellished with delicate filigree, are flanked by perfectly symmetrical architectural details and furnishings. Pendant chandeliers are abundant and forms a glorious focal point that celebrates the space, emphasising the need to look up, as one tends to do in a basilica. Persian rugs run a charming path through the house from the dramatic outdoors towards a fantastically steep marble staircase of princely proportions.

ROYALE RECEPTION Both lounge, dining and living areas are interconnected and offset with decorative ceiling insets. Large sofas are plentiful and placed generously throughout the house breaking bigger areas into welldefined living spaces that offer privacy, intimacy and enormous comfort. The fabrics are chosen specifically for their small, detailed patterns that work to draw the eye inwards, calling attention to detail. Ornate coffee tables that rest on perfectly rectangular rugs offer tranquil resting spaces that speak of happy, social times. Lighting from oddly placed lamps and down lights is soft and ambient.

SPEAKING VOLUMES A library area, situated deeper in the heart of the house, enjoys a hearth laid with a studded leather ottoman surrounded by beautiful cream and orange blossom couches. Again, symmetry plays its part in the relaxed style of this peaceful area. Ornate shelving hosts a treasured collection of books. The visual balance is appealing with its sumptuous luxury, and the nature of the space holds the promise of romantic evenings by the fire.

RESTROOMS AND WARM BATHS Inlaid ceilings, columns, plinths and arches of Romanesque proportions offer a refined sanctuary where the ordinary bathroom is transformed into a place of beauty. The lone egg shaped tub adds a unique contemporary twist to this medieval rendition of a royal washroom. Gilt edged mirrors, crystal chandeliers and generous spaces in warm neutral colours collude and whisper ‘exclusive privacy’.

GOOD NIGHT Tones of cream, light yellow and subtle patterns are indispensable in an Italian bedroom. Rough textured curtains that allow natural light into the bedrooms work to decorate and ventilate the bedrooms. Ornate mirrors, beds and tables complete this look and complement the soft furnishings. The scale of furniture and its position in the room is well considered. A hallmark of this style is the moderate size of the items with the extravagance reflected in the minute details of each piece rather than in scaled up sizing. In this case, bigger isn’t better.

CUPBOARDS OF COUTURE The conventional dressing room has been reconsidered and a stunning exclusive boutiquestyle space is the result. Warm oak coloured floors, ornate wooden panels and a storage island give a clean, professional and opulent look, completely appropriate not only for a home but for a couture brand too. The mobile ladder on a rail adds a charming touch and lots of window space is the cherry on the top.

CINEMA SPACE A concept that’s right on trend and one gathering momentum in the technological age is that of the home cinema. This entertainers delight supersedes VIP style cinemas with its sheer indulgence. Heavy leather recliners offer a level of luxurious comfort that is unmatched in casual seating and screams opulence. Filigree skylight panels and flamboyant decorative elements on the walls conspire to unite theatre and movie entertainment in one. The overall effect achieves its goal by transporting the audience closer to fantasyland.

GREAT OUTDOORS Voluminous space is associated with quality. But, as with many a successful space, the aesthetic value lies not in sprawling brick structures that often lose their charm, but in the sublime use of proportions. A view from the poolside displays a conservative

er,

use of space and keeps its open views without forgoing privacy and intimacy. Italian architecture is fondly applauded for this and here it achieves these aims in a timeless vignette of picturesque beauty. Order and symmetry are again achieved with little bushels of manicured topiary set in a flawless garden surrounding a deep blue swimming pool. A manicured outdoor atrium offers secluded intimacy and natural breakaways with a curious water feature in the centre. Gravel pathways, both practical and authentic to this architectural style, crunch underfoot, adding texture and contrast to the green hedging.

BEAUTIFUL VIEW Views that stretch far into the mountainous distance are captured through a quaint circular portal. This cameo is a surprise and a delightful one with decorative vine metalwork curling outwards and upwards. The property’s many patios and balconies frame the landscape and suitably tall cypress trees stretch their spires upwards adding graceful stature and depth to garden views. This is estate living at its very best and is a home that is fit for royalty, offering presidential style living beyond international standards. SUPERSIZED A grand oversized black and white houndstooth pattern adds playful drama to sixties-inspired furniture. A sofa in pale buttermilk leather tones gently against a whisper of damask wallpaper. White tiger lilies, their sleepy heads dangling from hand-blown glass, are strategically placed to accent a piece of carefully hung artwork. It’s these special and evocative details that live together to form a room filled with a mix of timeless pieces. “This was one of those dream projects where the client gave us free reign to design without limitation”, says Bone Studio interior designer Hayley Turner. “The house, an old Victorian style property, was given a

modern update by the architect, so our natural direction was to extend this eclectic mix of styles into the interior and furniture.” This spirited influence is evident in the supersized lounge pendant light, creating a wonderful statement piece that juxtaposes perfectly against the smaller proportions of the room, to provide a quirky element of surprise and aesthetic delight. Fun, sweet and very eccentric, a must-have easy-chair in faded ochre rests easily in a prime position in the sunniest corner of the room. It’s a characterful piece with a charming footrest hewn from wood and is essential seating with a practical function.

SPARTAN SPACE The high gloss black leather couch with lots of open wall space and an unusual swing arm wall lamp in black metal mounted above it, form a masculine combination of elements which are immediately enhanced by soft, warm wooden floors and furniture, an animal-print rug and woven basket with a cashmere throw. A lone yellow rose speaks loudest, calling out its feminine beauty in glorious canary yellow. It’s easily dispensable, leaving space for theatrical styling and versatility. The nature of this practical room celebrates extremes and is a fresh departure from the conventional.

WORKING EFFORTLESSLY Bold patterns give serious contrast to a room that combines simple forms with elegance, something that is both stunning and unique. A translucent table and Kubikoff diamond armchairs combined with gold-plated seating and artwork combine to emphasise the feeling of space, making the most of natural light. Copper details in the artwork and reflections from the glass chandelier reflect plenty of light giving the impression of weightlessness. We’re seeing a lot of mix and matching happening in the chairs, but symmetry and stripes are used to create uniformity and balance and it’s beautifully forgiving and perfectly timeless.

FRAMED A neutral palette offers a spot in which to display collectors’ pieces. Art deco symmetry in metal and glass play nicely when there’s a private corner without visual interference. A view through an open door reveals a large pottery vessel and a decorative bull head with strange proportions. It’s all about perspective. These breakaways create visual interest and the result is a diverse set of looks that add decorative value. Whether it’s custom-made, off-the-shelf or a hand-me-down, it’s all about de-cluttering and establishing the combination of pieces and how they’re placed that wins points.

REST AND RELAXATION Always a winner in bedrooms, pretty French Provençal furniture loves a restrained and somewhat intimate colour palette and is finished with crisp white cotton and delicate floral garlands on the wallpaper. It’s approachable and liveable and the gentle gradients of the furniture and sturdy legs give a sense of calm stability. The addition of gold lamp bases and delicate furniture inlays offer soft elegance and a little decadence. The sense of peace that is created is a collaboration of tranquillity and style intended for nights of restful sleep.

KID’S CORNERS Acid yellow and charcoal are dominant bedroom colours and hark back to the fifties, but an interesting geometric bedcover fabric breaks this look with classic stripes and playful peach to contrast. Cheerful wallpaper adds a whimsical touch and

is a wonderful backdrop - illustrations of cars are intricate and beautifully detailed and offer variation and texture. A burst of bright red colour injects energy and excitement into the room. Gorgeous, generously stuffed headboards add a hint of luxury. A simple red chair, a storybook style lamp and busy bedcover patterns layered with a toy collection are a kiddywinks dream.

PLAYTIME Parenting is made much simpler thanks to this playroom-come-homework room. Clever storage solutions, with a long desk running alongside one wall, offer varied spaces and lots of personal room to display knick-knacks. Note the interestingly shaped boxes and display areas for further interest and variety. It’s a highly functional concept with a touch of Swedish ingenuity and makes tidy-up time child’s play. SV

THE ART OF

avant-garde

A KRISJAN ROSSOUW/ ROCHE BOBOIS COLLABORATION Fine Art Photography and Fine Design join forces at the Krisjan Rossouw / Roche Bobois Collaboration set to take place in Cape Town in February/March. This ‘must see’ event invites habitués to observe Fine Art Photography in a different dimension. JACQUELINE MILLS

MAGNETIC NUDES Self-taught visionary, modern aesthete and Fine Art Photographer, Krisjan Rossouw, will be presenting his latest creations in person in collaboration with the high-end French furniture designer, Roche Bobois. This much-anticipated event, the centrepiece of an ongoing exhibition, certainly in the diaries of discerning collectors, will be held at their flagship interior showroom in Kloof Street from February 23. Known for his intense seductive works blurring the lines between paintwork and photography, Rossouw’s use of ground breaking photographic lighting sources and shadows, is the key to the extraordinary technique for which he is famed. According to

70 SOUTHERN VINES AUTUMN 2017

COLLABORATION DECOR

Rossouw, his chosen subject matter, that of nude African models, evolved naturally over time. “When I started out, the models were my friends. We started out by experimenting with different ideas and it was a case of stripping away almost everything to be able to say more.” His ‘perfect eye’ and collaborative approach to his subject matter is what lends itself to the veracity and magnetism his works exude. Being a design originator of furniture that makes a statement, Roche Bobois was the obvious exhibition collaboration partner providing the ideal setting for the display of Rossouw’s works. The photographic exhibition, in partnership with William Vaesen at The Boutique Gallery in Franschhoek where Rossouw’s works are permanently stationed, is the first of its kind for the Roche Bobois interior design brand, famed for celebrating French art de vivre worldwide and with a strong commitment to promote visionary art and artists.

THE MAN BEHIND THE LENS Once a self-taught photographer, Rossouw’s love affair with Fine Art Photography began with a gift, of his first camera, from his mother as a young man. Today he’s an

accomplished Fine Art Photographer whose work hangs in the homes of astute collectors worldwide; and we’re proud to say, he’s South African. Happily inspired by painters, one of Rossouw’s biggest influencers is Tretchikoff whose “impasto” style closely mirrors Rossouw’s austere and elegant palette. African beauty and botany are his favoured subject matter, incorporating models and lush plants, saturated in colour and abundant sensuality. The special viewing will take place on February 23rd - three days after the exhibition’s opening where VIPs and private guests will be invited to view the works in the company of Rossouw himself for the duration of the evening. Following which, private viewings can be pre-arranged on request. The exhibition is open to all to view the works any time during the opening hours of Roche Bobois’ Kloof Street showroom from the 23rd of February to the 13th of March 2017. SV

Minimalism WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

With a shift towards simplicity, minimalism has become a trend with emotional and mental health benefits. JENNIFER CAMPBELL

D

ecluttering is certainly not a new concept, but the minimalist trend is gaining momentum around the world. With smaller houses, minimal decor, fewer possessions and smaller wardrobes, people (and millennials in particular) are increasingly looking at the trend as a lifestyle choice. But why is the concept so popular, and what exactly is the appeal?

THE BENEFITS ARE REAL Angela Horn, writer at the Mostly Mindful blog (www.angelagayehorn.com), has embraced minimalism, and says that for her, the benefits of decluttering extend much further than the obvious perks of living in a tidier space. “Decluttering also brings with it a sense of accomplishment that invariably leaves you feeling lighter and happier,” she says. “When you keep putting something off, like cleaning out the hall closet or tidying up the garage, it weighs on your subconscious. You can pretend all you want, but until you actually do that thing you’re procrastinating about, it’s going to sit there in the back of your mind like an annoying house guest who’s overstayed their welcome.”

72 SOUTHERN VINES AUTUMN 2017

72 Motivation.indd 72

2017/02/16 1:08 AM

MOTIVATION WELLNESS

EXPERIENCE MATTERS The swing toward minimalism has grown particularly among millennials for various reasons, with more value being placed on experience rather than material possessions. Angela believes that with the ease of remote work these days, millennials often favour the freedom of travel over settling down, in a way that was not necessarily possible before. “Also, I think they’re a lot more financially savvy than other generations, because they have so much information available to them. For Baby Boomers, retiring at 60 was the norm, but now, more and more people are stopping work in their 30s and 40s,” she adds.

HOW DOES IT WORK? If you’re ready to give it a try, the two most important things, says Angela, are to become debt-free and declutter your home. “Start by assessing your finances to see where your money is going every month and then adjust accordingly. Stop buying stuff for buying’s sake. We often use shopping as a way to make ourselves feel better, but all it does is add to the clutter and the debt,” she says. Next, try and focus on spending money on experiences, rather than possessions. “Experiences create memories and memories stay with you, whereas the happiness you derive from a new iPhone, car,

or pair of shoes, is fleeting at best.” Then, get rid of everything you no longer use – it may feel difficult at first, especially if there is sentimental value attached to things, but if it’s not adding value to your life, it needs to go. Getting rid of material things can often feel like an emotional process, particularly if you are hanging on to the possessions of a lost loved one, something that reminds you of a past relationship, or an item that has sentimental value from a specific time or place in your life. But, decluttering these kinds of things is often a healthy emotional choice, especially in cases where it is time to move on -- we tend to cling to things for fear of forgetting a person or place, but sifting through these things can help to work through painful emotions, and help us to let go. “A way around the angst is to put a time limit on your belongings. You could start out by saying if you haven’t used something in the past year, then you get rid of it. As you get better at letting go, you can reduce the time frame to six months and then three,” suggests Angela.

WHAT’S THE OUTCOME? It’s important to know that

minimalism isn’t a one-size-fits-all lifestyle. Angela and her partner have decided that their lives work best when they own very little, but there are many versions of the concept that work for different people. Angela explains: “The point is not how much or how little we own, but rather, how we’re spending our money. We had all this stuff we had to maintain and it took up a lot of our time. Now that we’re debtfree and we own very little we have so much more time to do the things that matter to us and that we enjoy. We’ve both transitioned to a three-day work week, something we’d never been able to do before. We’re much happier and life is much easier and much simpler than it used to be.” SV

What’s the difference?

ith packed schedules and busy routines, most of us end up multitasking our way through the day -- planning our weekends while we cook dinner, or reading emails with one eye on the kids. But, with rushing around comes a sense of having lost connection with the present moment, and more importantly, a detachment from our present feelings, both physical and emotional. Meditation and mindfulness (and the two practices combined) can go a long way in restoring calm, but can also help to put us back in tune with ourselves.

WHAT IS MEDITATION? Although there are many forms of meditation, Linda Kantor, a counselling psychologist, hypnotherapist and yoga teacher based in Cape Town, explains that the one thing that all types of meditation have in common is that the practice generally allows us to take time out of our day to really slow down and spend time with ourselves.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? “Mindfulness is the art of noticing where our attention is in the moments of our lives,” says Linda. Some simple examples, she adds, might include ensuring our attention is fully with our children when we

in the body,” says Linda. She goes on to explain that mindfulness and mindfulness meditation feed into each other: “The more we take time out on a daily basis to practise, the more we remember to actually be present to the moment we are in, in our daily lives. It is like developing a muscle of attention so that we can recognise the tendency of the mind to be elsewhere, and we can choose more skillfully to be where we are.”

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? There has been considerable research in recent years suggesting that there are numerous health benefits of meditation. As well as its ability to aid relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety, the practice is also used as a complementary treatment to many different therapies for a number of conditions. It has also been linked to shifts in the brain in the direction of increased emotional intelligence and empathetic behavior. Also, Linda adds, “there are of course, numerous benefits to being more present to the moments of our lives, as opposed to being lost in thought, as it allows us to connect more with ourselves and those around us.”

WHERE DOES ONE START? If you’re new to the practice of mindfulness and are keen to give it a try, the key is to make it a part

As well as its ability to aid relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety, the practice is also used as a complementary treatment to many different therapies for a number of conditions. play or listen to them; or that we are present to the sounds, sights, and sensations in the body when we drive somewhere, as opposed to being on autopilot.

HOW CAN THE TWO BE COMBINED? The two concepts come together in what’s known as mindfulness meditation -- an exercise Linda describes as “the practice of carving out time on a daily basis to practise, in order to develop the skill and the art of paying attention in the present moment, on purpose without judgment.” The idea is that when we actively take time to pay attention to the mind, which is usually preoccupied with the future or past, we learn to focus our attention gently in the moment we are actually in. “Generally as one learns mindfulness meditation, one learns to anchor one's attention on a focal point like the breath, or sound, or sensations

of your daily routine. Linda suggests choosing a daily task like brushing your teeth, showering, washing the dishes, or driving to work, and turning it into an opportunity for mindfulness meditation. “Think about these things. In all likelihood they are activities that we may have already done today but have not actually been present to. Now, when you are showering, feel the water on your skin; or when you are brushing your teeth, take notice of the taste of the toothpaste and the sensations of the toothbrush. When you feel your attention wandering (which it will), come back to being present to the activity at hand,” encourages Linda. Practice makes perfect, and as soon as you have the hang of it and can find a way to make it a part of your day, the many benefits will trickle in in abundance. SV

hile doing some exhaustive research to be of service to the informed readers of this publication, it was quite amazing to see how little has been written, spoken and sung about South African Merlot wine. There are reams of missives on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc and little-known, trendy bottles made from weird grapes like Verdelho and Palomino, but the Merlot voices are largely silent. What makes this dearth of information stranger still, is the fact that - as far as single varieties go Merlot is the number one selling red wine in South Africa. Which might offer some explanation as to why it is not getting more airtime from the weighty voices of the informed wine critics who follow the rule of: if it is so popular, it can’t be that good. But common taste be damned, I love me a good juicy Merlot. When well-made, this red wine offers a muscular, stern presence while at the same time wrapping the senses in a silky cloak of gentle, seductive fruit flavours.

wine-makers who follow a rigorous commitment to quality in everything they do, and Jordan’s reputation as one of the Cape’s leading producers is welldeserved. The Jordan Black Magic Merlot 2014 has its origins in vineyards set in granite soils lined with black tourmaline – Gary is a trained geologist, so I am with him on this one. Merlot vineyards were planted in these ancient dark soils to complement the grapes’ flavour profiles, which along with skill in the cellar has helped create a wine I can only describe as magnificently delicious. The wine spent 16 months in French oak barrels, a combination of old and new, and the wood has added a statuesque structure to a wine oozing

Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch has captured the essence of Merlot in a wine it calls Black Magic, an evocative name that is doing wonders in attracting a new generation of wine-lovers to this variety. But then again, everything Jordan does is pretty much spot-on. If I ever find myself in doubt as to what wine to select, I’ll go for something with ‘Jordan’ on the label. Owners Gary and Kathy Jordan are both

flavours of red fruit and spice with a slight herbal hint. Prunes and ripe plums abound, and on the spice side, I found a touch of cardamom and cinnamon. But the main feature is the gorgeous smooth, soft way the wine lies on the palate allowing the heady flavours to drift towards a long, smooth finish. A great wine on its own or with roasted meats and creamy pastas. While we’re on the theme of funky names, how about the Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc ? Well if snakes are the thing, Rattlesnake is more in-tune with the Constantia language than Pofadder or Geelslang. This wine is named after HMS Rattlesnake which fought against the Dutch in the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795 and has become one of the most popular offerings from Steenberg Vineyards, which claims to be the oldest registered farm in the Cape. The Rattlesnake is always dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, but in some years a small percentage of Sémillon is added to give palateweight and a bit of body. This was not needed in the 2016 vintage, and the 100% Sauvignon Blanc offers a pristine example of how great this kind of wine can be when the grapes come from the right site and the winemakers handle them with the requisite skill. No, you are not going to get a zingy, sharp, green Sauvignon Blanc in the Rattlesnake. The wine was given wooding in large barrels of French oak adding a dimension of class, sophistication and superiority. Fruit is there, a fresh line of lychee, kumquat and white pear. But what the wooding does is broaden

the structure, providing a podium from which the balance of acid, fruit and freshness can speak in an assertive and lasting voice. What a white wine this is, and a call for wooded Sauvignon Blanc to be placed in the category of ‘South African Greatness’. Alright, would you believe the next wine I selected also has a name which could be described as unconventional. This is the Close Encounter Riesling from Paul Cluver out Elgin way. Paul Cluver pioneered wine farming among the apple orchards in cool-climate Elgin, and Riesling was one of the first varieties planted. But sales of Riesling hit a hiccup a few years back and Cluver almost pulled out all the Riesling vines as a result – a close encounter, if you wish. The resulting wine is arguably South Africa’s finest Riesling. Paul Cluver Close Encounter 2016 is a Riesling that brings the fruitier, sweeter elements of this German grape variety to the fore. The trick is, and this winemaker Andries Burger does superbly, is to ensure the grapes’ natural acidity is retained to perk-up the sweet-side to ensure the wine remains fresh and does not become cloying or candy-like. Close Encounter offers all the unique traits of a fine Riesling to an exactness Paul Cluver’s wines have become known for. The wine has notes of quince, ripe apple and honeycomb riding on a broken wave of exuberance and life-affirming drinkability. Also, worth mentioning is that this wine has a modest alcohol level of 9,4%, making it one for guilt-free enjoyment, if this is your kind of thing. For me, it is down the hatch by the bottle, and a perfect accompaniment to – oh stuff the “spicy Asian thing” – a great hot curry. SV

n the Western Cape, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to MCC. With so many highquality local producers on our doorstep, it can be easy to take new offerings for granted. But, when Southern Vines heard of a bubbly that came from humble beginnings, and which is quickly growing into a brand that enthusiasts are taking notice of, we had to investigate. The brainchild of Henk and Monica van Niekerk, the Paul René MCC is, in the truest sense, a labour of love. In 2008 Henk and Monica moved to Wonderfontein Wine Farm in the heart of the scenic Route 62. At this time, the couple was going through an emotionally challenging period, and threw all their energy into dreaming about and developing something new and exciting. They worked on the project for five years, and by 2013 when the brand was well established and ready to be released, their baby son Paul René, for which the MCC is named, was born to complete the family. Inspired by the desire to create a product of the highest quality, the couple decided to use chardonnay grapes for which the Langeberg Valley is so well known. The result is a delicate, inviting flavour -- it’s one for a special occasion, although, as Henk points out, “there is a special occasion in every day.” The real inspiration behind the bubbly, though, is rooted in the idea that life should be celebrated. “We always strive to be happier than the day before, and bubbles make that easier,” says Henk. When Henk was a child, he would steal groceries from his mother’s kitchen to take on expeditions with his fellow boy scouts, his passion for mixing flavours was clear from a very young age. He hasn’t grown out

90 SOUTHERN VINES AUTUMN 2017

of this enthusiasm to play with flavour, and the MCC is testament to this energy. Monica, on the other hand, spent her days as a child in her grandmother’s art studio, growing a creativity which would eventually show in her talent as a designer and illustrator.

The MCC is a family affair, with Henk as farmer and bubbly producer, and Monica as the brains behind the beautiful packaging and design. “Working together has been a fantastic privilege and journey. The challenge is that I am a dreamer and Monica is an even bigger dreamer. Although we have spent many early coffee mornings together, drives to Cape Town and late evenings discussing and planning, it has never felt like work. To us living on a farm with our family and making MCC is a living dream, and one that we appreciate every day,” says Henk. The Wonderfontein Wine Farm is the perfect setting for the project, with its gorgeous vineyards, historic buildings and picture-perfect views. Besides that, the farm has been in Monica’s family for years, so it’s a fitting location for the couple to have started their dream venture, and of course, their own family. Every bottle of Paul René MCC is fermented for no less than 20 months, a technique that creates a vibrant flavour with apricot and green apple freshness and a dry finish. The chardonnay grapes that go into each bottle are handpicked early in the morning and then chilled overnight before being passed into the press to be crushed, crate by crate. 12 000 bottles are produced every year, and each bottle is hand labelled and packed. It’s clear that love transcends from the start and straight through to the final product. SV

SANBONA WILDLIFE RESERVE Also in the Karoo, and just three hours from Cape Town along Route 62, Sanbona boasts a wild, unique landscape with a combination of mountains and open plains. As well as the Big Five, the reserve is also home to over 200 species of bird, making it an ideal option for birdwatchers. Conservation is key for the new owners; the Caleo Foundation along with the Sanbona team work to reintroduce indigenous wildlife to the area including rhino, white lions and more, and care for the unique flora that can only be found in the Karoo. The idea is to work to reduce the effects of consumption on the environment and improve environmental management and awareness in an eco-friendly manner, by addressing the direct impact of the reserve on the environment, reducing their carbon footprint and improving the environmental education of both owners and visitors. They also offer "Kids on Safari" packages, where little ones can learn about animals and plants on the reserve. SV

ancún -- the name conjures images of turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and a party scene that’s world-renowned. But, this Mexican city bordering the Caribbean Sea is more than its pretty exterior and nightlife. With eco-tourism booming, a trip to the region offers plenty of outdoor activities, while luxury-lovers will enjoy gorgeous spas and fine dining in a picturesque setting.

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS No visit to Cancún would be complete without a dip in its exquisite waters, but if you’re looking for something more than a day at the beach, a snorkelling trip makes a good day trip. While it’s possible to snorkel around the Cancún beaches, there is also the option of taking an organised tour a little further out to experience the nearby protected National Marine Park. Punta Nizuc, at the southern tip of the island, boasts a beautiful reef ecosystem home to turtles and many other creatures. You can

also see part of the underwater sculpture museum of Cancún here, an eco-project that was designed to form an artificial reef and help protect the coral, fish and other sea life in the area. Another great spot for snorkelling is Cozumel, a shallow reef with bright and varied coral formations. Visitors can expect to see beautiful tropical fish and underwater gardens here, and it’s also well known for its scuba diving sites around the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. For something different, and a highlight for many visitors, whale sharks come to the area to feed between mid-May and mid-September, and it’s possible to swim and snorkel with these gentle giants near the islands of Isla Contoy and Isla Holbox. If you’re more comfortable on land, there are a number of nature reserves and protected areas to explore. Isla Contoy is an uninhabited, pristine island, and is home to a wide variety of birdlife as well as nesting turtles during the summer. The island makes an easy day trip from Cancún and offers a good

opportunity to learn about the indigenous flaura and fauna from local experts. If you’re keen to explore the area around Cancún, the beautiful Sian Kaán Biosphere Reserve, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, is about a two hour drive away, and offers visitors the chance to kayak, fish, and see ancient Mayan ruins.

INDULGE YOURSELF If rest and relaxation is what you’re after, you won’t be disappointed with Cancún’s offering of luxury spas. There are numerous resorts in the Cancún Hotel Zone that offer all the usual treatments in spaces that are elegant and soothing, many of which have outdoor treatment areas close to the sea or in a tropical garden. Look out for places that offer something a little different, like treatments that incorporate ancient Mayan traditions and natural products, hydrotherapy stations, hydro-reflexology pools, and sea water therapies. For therapy of a different kind, there’s a choice

of high end malls and designer boutiques, most of which you’ll find in the Hotel Zone, but if you’re looking specifically for quirky souvenirs and gifts, try the Coral Negro Flea Market, or Cancún’s biggest open air market, Mercado 28. Located downtown, it’s a good spot to stock up on traditional Mexican handicrafts, silver jewellery, clothing and tequila. With an abundance of luxury resorts, it’s no surprise that Cancún also has plenty of world class restaurants to choose from. You’ll find places that offer all kinds

of seafood, authentic Mexican and Mayan dishes and more familiar offerings like tacos, fresh, spicy salsas, fajitas and tortillas, while others have added

a modern twist to the traditional favourites. There’s also no shortage of international flavours in the Hotel Zone, so if you’re looking for something other than Mexican cooking, you’ll have a choice of gourmet fare, as diverse as Thai, French, and Argentinian.

GO DANCING Best known for its nightlife, Cancún certainly has it all if you’re in the mood for a party. You’ll find anything from live music and salsa lessons, to cabaret and exclusive clubs. One of the bestknown clubs is the high-energy Coco Bongo, where you can expect crazy acrobatics, celebrity impersonators, and exotic dancers on the dancefloor. The City is another favourite -- it’s one of the area’s biggest nightclubs and often hosts live concerts and DJs, Hotel Zone

as well as special events like foam and glow-in-the-dark paint parties. For something more laid back, try a beach club like Sunset Grill on Isla Mujeres, where you can enjoy the open-air restaurant with a view of the sea; or The Beach Club at the ME Cancun Resort, where guests can relax around a stylish pool area, hang at one of two bars, dance to live DJs, or eat at the restaurant. A lot of the beach clubs serve delicious local snacks with a twist, like banana leaf steamed fish, shrimp skewers, and seafood ceviche and you’ll be treated to tasty drinks like cocktails and hibiscus iced tea. CROSSFIT Given its incredible rise in popularity - it is, by many estimations, the world’s largest-growing form of formal exercise - you might find yourself wondering if CrossFit is for you. But what is it, exactly? And will you cope with its vigorous demands? DAVID FORD

THE ‘CULT’ OF CROSSFIT

WHY PEOPLE LOVE IT

To outsiders, CrossFit can seem like a harmless ‘cult’ of sorts: it has its own unique vocabulary, and - often - people who get into CrossFit become motivated enough by its training regimens to make related lifestyle changes, such as shifts in their diet or daily routines. However, as evidenced by the appearance of several thriving CrossFit ‘Boxes’ (as these gyms are called) in Cape Town over the past 18 months, this is clearly an unfair and inaccurate representation. In fact, it is exactly the ability to inspire enthusiastic, passionate exercise communities that have made CrossFit such a successful global phenomenon.

CrossFit is based on a set of ‘constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity’. In simpler terms, this means that the exercises you perform echo ordinary, everyday movements - motions you perform ‘naturally’ as a human being. So, while CrossFit makes extensive use of aids like barbells, ropes, platforms and (in some cases) even timber logs, the basic movements you are performing are highly functional ones: lifting, squatting. climbing, running, jumping. The great attraction of CrossFit is that, by working on this set of functional movements, you can develop a very general kind of strength

out in the UK on Monday and get back on the horse on Tuesday evening in Cape Town without missing a beat.

POTENTIAL DANGERS Most of the potential dangers of CrossFit emerge from two related aspects of the training: its intensity and its competitive nature. Because CrossFit is based on relatively highintensity repetitions of basic functional movements, in the beginning, at least, a degree of pain and stiffness must be expected the day after exercising. And while this might be true of any sport, where CrossFit can go wrong is that - in the name of competition, or ‘toughing it out’ - people can be goaded into aggravating conditions that are more serious than simple ‘stiffness’. It takes a good coach, a supportive group, but - most importantly - a strong and independentlyminded athlete, who knows the strengths and limitations of their own body, to make sure they get the benefits of the competitiveness of CrossFit, but without pushing themselves too far and risking injury.

GET INVOLVED and fitness. You don’t necessarily have to ‘bulk up’: you remain flexible and, like a well-oiled machine, your body is primed and ready for natural physical exertion. However, while this ultimate goal is - of course important to keep in sight, the fun of CrossFit (and the reason so many become hooked on it) lies in the means of getting there. CrossFit training occurs in groups, and it has a kernel of competitiveness planted in its core: almost without fail, the goal of any particular exercise (whether climbing a rope or lifting a kettlebell) is to do the greatest amount of repetitions you can in 15 or 20 minutes. Whoever does the most, ‘wins’, letting them bask in the friendly satisfaction of outperforming the group. It might sound trivial, but it brings an important motivational edge to CrossFit training: like with any sport, competition gives you a ‘reason to be there’, and - soon enough - what happens is that you start to compete first and foremost against yourself (i.e. your past performances), which is key to sustaining any long-term exercise programme. Other great benefits of CrossFit include convenience - the WODs (Workouts of the Day) are given to you, alleviating the need to design your own gym routine and coaching, as all CrossFit Boxes are serviced by certified instructors. There is a global standard employed in all CrossFit instructor training, meaning you can work

CrossFit is truly a global phenomenon - there are also CrossFit Games which promises to unveil The Fittest On Earth - and so information about the training is widely available online. If you like what you’ve read here and are serious about getting fit, why not stop in at one of Cape Town’s CrossFit Boxes and see what the fuss is about for yourself? There are branches of Cape CrossFit in Newlands, Gardens and Foreshore; while there are also options in District Six and Diep River, as well as Black River CrossFit in Observatory. SV

T

he Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s largest individually timed cycle race, firmly etched in the hearts and in the diaries of Capetonians, turns 40 this year. Set to take place on 12 March, the event, formerly known to locals as ‘The Cape Argus’, will take aspiring amateurs and professional cyclists from around the world along 109kms of unrivalled Cape coastline. Since its inception in 1978, the number of entrants has increased from an amateur-only figure of 525 to a colossal amateur and professional total exceeding 35 000 – past participants have included Richard Branson, Matt Damon and Premier Helen Zille. It could be accredited to the fact that it’s in vogue to be super fit in the 21st century, or perhaps it’s because Capetonians suffer from acute ‘fear of missing out’.

It’s one of the most iconic and scenic cycling events on the globe, and if you’re not one of the fit, fortunate riders set to take part this year, turn your regret to reinforcement, set your alarm, pack a picnic and cheer on the riders – watching them is free! Don’t forget to reward yourself with a faithful, frothy cappuccino for your vocal efforts – there are plenty of splendid coffee shops along the way.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE The 109km race, set to take place on Sunday 12 March 2017, will see some 35 000 avid cyclists, from all over the globe, taking to the Cape Peninsula coastline. The route will follow the same course as last year, starting in the city centre, then heading down the M3 through Muizenberg and as far south as Smitswinkel Bay. From there they will turn and head north through Hout Bay and Camps Bay to the finish line at Green Point. The 40th Cape Town Cycle Tour is the final event in the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust’s annual Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week, a week-long celebration of cycling, healthy lifestyles and outdoor sporting fun. Other Lifecycle Week events scheduled to take place before the final event are: n Cape Town Cycle Tour Junior: 5 March 2017 n Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge: 4 and 5 March 2017 n Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo: 9, 10 and 11 March 2017 For further event queries, please contact the Cycle Tour Events Office during office hours on 087 820 7223 or visit www.capetowncycletour.com

RAV REVIVAL The RAV4 has been a constant in the Toyota family since its debut in 1994. It’s safe to say that Toyota set the trend in the ever growing and popular mini SUV segment with their first model. Still attracting adventure seekers today, they have broadened their scope and invite an even larger audience to the forefront competing now in the mid SUV segment. BY VANN VAN STADEN

RAV’ING ABOUT IT There’s a lot to ‘RAV’ about after testing out the new RAV4. When meeting this ‘revised favourite’ face to face you will immediately notice a much more refined car. LED headlamps light the way forward. ‘Cosmetic surgery’ is noticeable with an amazing ‘nose job’ elevating the front grille area with subtle chrome detailing. Similar finishes are also visible from the rear end.

IN THE COCKPIT Inside the car, you remain captivated. Small details like the stitching on the leather side panels, dash and steering wheel are the same luxury trimmings you will find in other models of the Toyota family like its big brother, the Fortuner, and in the sporty 86. The instrument cluster has been upgraded sporting a 4.2inch multi-information display screen, showcasing energy usage, tyre pressure and other important information on the vehicle as well as some customisation offerings. Moving to the centre panel you are met with a 7inch Toyota Touch 2 touchscreen entertainment system. This is Bluetooth enhanced for handsfree phones calls. In addition,

the screen links to a rear-view camera assisting and guiding you when in reverse.

POWER UP It’s near impossible to not fall in love all over again. There is enough under the hood to get the job done. The 2.0l petrol engine kicks out 107kW, the 2.2l diesel at 110kW and the 2.5l petrol producing an impressive 132kW. These figures label the RAV4 as a mighty contender within its range.

GET BEHIND THE WHEEL There are 5 models in the RAV4 range. 3 GX and 2 VX models. All RAV4 models come standard with a 5 year/90 000km service plan and a 3 year/100 000km warranty. SV
