e’re well into 2018 now, and instead of wishing the year away chasing the next holiday I’ve personally taken on the challenge of living consciously. This means that (almost) all my decisions are thought out before action, making sure my intent comes from a good place. We all come with our naturally engrained eccentricities and so it should be, but this practice is more about doing the best you can with the knowledge you have – and through the process you learn so much more about yourself, other people and in turn you take the time to be more grateful for the things we generally take for granted. It’s so worth it! Water saving, which falls beautifully into my ‘conscious living’ process, has become a way of life in Cape Town, and so very very important to embrace and implement. ■ Cut your water use to less than 50 litres per person, per day ■ Use municipal drinking water only for essential washing, cooking and drinking purposes, and only use indoors ■ Check and fix all leaks on your property Visit the City of Cape Town website on www.capetown.gov.za to keep up to date with news and water saving tips. On another note, we’re into our third year with Southern Vines this year. Its come so quickly, and I’m so glad to report that we’re all just as enthusiastic today as we were when we started. It’s been an incredible journey. Thank you! This edition celebrates ‘Autumn’, new restaurants and trends, spicy travel adventures and a whole range of fun-filled activities to keep you busy, and more. Email me at lauren@southernvines.co.za, I’d love to hear from you.

ART SCENE

KILMANY-JO LIVERSAGE Award-winning artist Kilmany-Jo Liversage has adopted a distinctive graffiti style to create work that is brightly-coloured and large-scale. Her pieces are inspired by Renaissance-era portraiture and the way in which this reference meets urban art makes for an interesting combination that really challenges the conventions of painting. For some of her work, Kilmany-Jo sources portrait images from mass media and social networks and uses these images of strangers to create a sense of familiarity. For this reason, her work often elicits a feeling of commonality, simultaneously referencing digitised mass production.

Three local artists — Kilmany-Jo Liversage, Drummond Murphy, and Lizelle Kruger — create work that is thought-provoking and striking in its technique. Working in a variety of mediums, these artists draw on universal ideas that make their pieces relevant, each in their own distinct style.

Some years after completing her studies at Free State Technikon (where she received a distinction in painting) Kilmany-Jo travelled to Colombia for an artists’ residency, where she explored the concept of street art, a medium she now interprets in her own unique way. She has since worked on a number of art installations around the world, including murals in Vienna, Washington and Venice. She has also worked with Nando’s to create restaurant murals in several of their international locations. Kilmany-Jo’s work can be found at the Worldart Gallery in Church Street, Cape Town www.worldart.co.za

ART WHAT’S HOT

DRUMMOND MURPHY Drummond Murphy’s latest series of paintings, titled “Looking up”, is a collection of realistic-style pieces. The paintings feature mainly iconic Art Deco buildings in Cape Town and Durban and are inspired by the beautiful decorations placed at the tops of many of these cities’ buildings. “We have become so accustomed to intently staring down at our cell phones as we walk through town, that if we just took the time to look up, then we might be surprised and delighted by what we see,” says Drummond. Some of the buildings featured in his paintings

include Market House and Namaqua House in Greenmarket Square, Royal Albert House in Salt River, and the Gardens Shul in Cape Town city centre. Drummond studied Textile Design in the UK, before returning to South Africa to design fabrics. He went on to study Fine Art at Ruth Prowse School of Art and has since exhibited work in Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Hermanus. Drummond’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

LIZELLE KRUGER Contemporary visual artist Lizelle Kruger works in a variety of media from a studio in Cape Town. Known for her detailed paintings depicting a nude woman with a white bonnet - a trademark of the artist’s oeuvre - the artist takes her inspiration from the South African people and landscapes, which give her pieces a distinctly local aesthetic. Her latest body of work, however, makes a dramatic departure. Lizelle uses a subdued colour palette in her loosely painted, impressionistic charcoal and oil “drawings” in which she delves into the Mother City’s past. Forceful removals and the ‘Sugar Girls’ of District Six are juxtaposed with lively street scenes of Cape Town from the 1920s to 1960s. Having graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art, Lizelle subsequently joined the army, working in the production department of the SADF. A Volkskas and Brett Kebble Art Award finalist, she has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and her murals and sculptures for the SADF can still be seen at regimental headquarters around South Africa. Her work is collected worldwide. Lizelle’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com SV

n December 2017, a brand-new restaurant at 75 Kloof Street stretched its limbs and opened its doors to the public. Janse & Co is the inspiration and passion of chef Arno Janse van Rensburg and his partner and pastry chef, Liezl Odendaal, previously of Ellerman House, an upmarket Bantry Bay hotel. With six years experience heading The Kitchen at Maison, a 2016 “Top 10 Restaurant” in Franschhoek, Arno opened his new restaurant with formidable knowledge and it shows in the quality of the food, as well as in the confidence and elegance of its presentation.

THE VIBE Janse & Co embodies casual fine dining, with the food and service delivering the “fine dining” experience and the peaceful atmosphere, the former. The décor is minimalist and contemporary with a

dark, sultry colour palette and the occasional pop of colour, such as the floral wall art mural by Cape Town artist, “Care One Love”. The restaurant also offers guests a variety of spaces in which to sit, from the lush outdoor courtyard with its hanging garden to the long harvest table, perfect for large groups, with views of the restaurant’s wine collection and house-made charcuterie. The main section of the restaurant is beautifully spaced out and allows guests to see what’s going on in the kitchen, where a multitude of young chefs work in perfect synchronicity to create dishes that are as pleasurable to look at as they are to eat.

THE FOOD Janse & Co adopts a slightly unorthodox – and absolutely brilliant - approach to its menu. Guests are given a list of around 20 dishes to choose from, allowing them to curate their own three to sevencourse tasting menu. The dishes are varied, yet well balanced and cater to all palates and preferences, which only leaves you with the challenge of deciding which ones to choose. For starters, you might choose a generous slab of creamy goat’s cheese dressed with shavings of sweet apple and topped with blueberries and a vivacious Japanese herb called shisho; for vegetarians or veggie lovers, the steamed and roasted cauliflower, served swimming in a velvety Prince Albert Regal cheese sauce and topped with lemon zest and an earthy smoked oyster powder. There’s a trout dish, served generously and wreathed in wafer-thin slices of tart plum and sweet grapes, and finished off with mustard leaves and trout roe. For meat lovers, tender slivers of Karoo lamb and nuggets of melt-in-your-mouth fat, perched

on a swath of aubergine purée and caramelised black garlic. And for a triumphant ending, a dacquoise dessert cake with layers of local pecan nuts, thick sweet caramel, and tart gooseberries. Each dish is carefully constructed with attention paid to the texture and flavour profiles and is beautifully presented. The team at Janse & Co hold a reverence for simple, honest ingredients that are sourced locally and according to the season, which is also why the menu is in a constant state of dynamism. Whatever Western Cape farm, orchard, fishery, or pasture is fruitful that week will be showcased on the menu.

THE WINE Chef Arno’s philosophy of using fresh, organic produce and allowing it to take centre stage - rather than overly complicating or embellishing it - extends well into the wine list. Most of the wines featured on the menu have been sourced from off-the-beatentrack boutique wineries that

prioritise quality over quantity and that seek to preserve the integrity of the grapes, intervening as little as possible during their growth and maturation. With no pesticides, hormones, or additives, and minimal preservatives, these wines are a true ode to the grape-growing prowess of the Cape’s soils, and the winemaking talents of her people.

THE EXPERIENCE With a few months under its belt, Janse & Co already seems to have proven itself to be the new “it” spot for an afternoon or evening of casual fine dining. The décor is simplistic yet stylish, the menu a celebration of fresh, local, and seasonal produce, the outdoor

courtyard perfect for dining al fresco, and the service warm and knowledgeable. Chef Arno himself is approachable and laid-back: clearly, the inspiration for the vibe at his new restaurant, Janse & Co, which is truly a triumph of fine dining, served in a beautiful venue with a relaxed atmosphere, right in the heart of Cape Town. CASA RESTAURANT & CABANAS For a dining experience in a setting that screams sophisticated glamour, try CASA Restaurant & Cabanas at The Ritz in Sea Point. The decor is reminiscent of laid-back 1980s Miami style, with white, black, gold and pink accents and bold banana leaf wallpaper. The space serves Cape-California resort-style food and has a poolside champagne bar, sushi station and pizza oven. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a decadent Sunday brunch. Make a day of it and enjoy a lavish spread of fresh breads, sushi, bacon and egg tortillas, charcuterie, cheeses, and a roast of the day. If you’re there for dinner, try the sautéed gnocchi with burnt sage butter, mushrooms and artichoke; spicy seared tuna espetada with stir-fried vegetables; or the truffle mac ‘n cheese with parmesan crust. Meat-lovers will enjoy the charcoal grilled lamb lollipops, and the chargrilled Wagyu burger. W www.theritz.co.za T 021 439 6010

THE BISTRO AT KLEIN CONSTANTIA Next to the tasting room at Klein Constantia, The Bistro is set in a beautiful location under big Jacaranda trees. The menu is small, but carefully curated and embodies a "farm-totable" philosophy. es, unbelievably this spacious three bedroomed abode is an apartment, not a house, and is reminiscent of Japanese architect Tadao Ando and iconic minimalist brands like Muji (currently thriving across the globe). Designed by Zuckerman Sachs Architects, with interiors by ARRCC, the property serves as a stylishly decorated bachelor’s retreat. “Bold textures and varied colour pallets add richness and masculinity, creating a unique and captivating space,” says ARRCC Director Mark Rielly.

EAT IN The kitchen’s central island is a grey, neolith block with a floating timber bar countertop and leather cushioned barstools. A timber wall panel helps delineate functional spaces effortlessly. A bespoke dining table fashioned from parquet flooring is the perfect contrast for casual black leather dining chairs. Colourful hand-blown glass pendants by David Reade dangle from a slot-trough lighting frame adding relaxed vibrancy to the room.

ARRIVE AND PLAY A direct access elevator leads visitors to sumptuous open plan living – an absence of nonessential internal walls swallows any fussy detail, opening up to spacious luxury with views over the Atlantic. The property is aptly named – Ocean View. Bare essential furnishings keep the living spaces from feeling confined or untidy. Layered timber flooring is used throughout the apartment and wood and white elements reflect and bounce the natural light, letting the beauty shine through.

ROOM WITH A VIEW Clad in red desert stone and insulated against the hot midday sun and cooler desert nights, the architecture is inspired by the earth it is situated on. “We built with rammed earth, so literally we used sand that was on the ground and built it into walls” explains Greg. A Nordic influence favours pale-coloured walls and flooring and spaces that are free from clutter. The rooms are multi-functional and practical with a stark look that’s still inviting. Organic furniture, rugs and towels soften the look and the gentle tones of sage and white linen give an airy cool feel.

The long, simple lines of the deck run lengthways emphasising the vastness of space. Tables and chairs were designed in collaboration with David Krynauw with the timber frames and structure of the pieces reminiscent of animal bones and carcasses in a desert landscape.

A WELCOMED SIGHT The V-shaped swimming pool complements the architectural angles of the lodge, offering guests a chance to focus on the vast landscape while cooling off. Wooden decking serves to absorb extreme heat, offering heat relief.

BAER DESIGN Bespoke Kitchens and Furniture Danish-inspired designer breathes nature into the kitchen and the home.

I

BY THEA BECKMAN

n the early to mid-20th Century, Danish furniture designers such as Kaare Klint, Poul Henningsen, and Arne Jacobsen moved away from the flowery, heavily embellished designs of the previous decades and, using beautiful, quality wood, began creating minimalist masterpieces with organic textures and strong, clean lines; a style that would go on to generate huge waves in the international design scene. So popular was the Danish or “Scandinavian” style that it inspired a new era of furniture fashion that has persisted with great flourish to this day. It’s this design theme that is the inspiration of Franschhoek-based furniture designer, Baer Design.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE WOOD Baer Design is a team of designer Robert Baerveldt and local master craftsmen based on a nearby Franschhoek farm. Together, the team specialises in bespoke kitchens, cabinetry, cupboards, and freestanding and fixed furniture for both residential and commercial spaces. Their pieces are typically hewn from American or European Oak for its character, longevity, ability to withstand use and the fact that it’s a sustainable resource. “We look to nature to be inspired; therefore, we strive to do our bit to preserve nature by using only sustainable wood species.” Without slick layers of heavily tinted varnish, the wood’s gorgeous organic texture and grain, blonde colouration, swirls of knots, and slight imperfections are revealed, rendering each and every piece totally unique and full of personality. The furniture and cabinetry Baer Design produces are testament to the quality of the wood used, the prowess of Robert Baerveldt’s design, and the skills of the craftsmen. And, of course, they breathe nature into the kitchen and the home.

BESPOKE KITCHEN DESIGNS Forget the cookie cutter approach. At Baer Design, each kitchen is designed from scratch, according to the space they have to work with and the client’s wish list, as well as which layout promotes optimal flow and functionality. A unique plan is drawn up for that space and, inspired by the Danish design approach, the pieces of the puzzle are hand crafted and installed. The result is a unique masterpiece: an artwork of organic textures, clean, modern lines, and quality, characterful wood. In other words, a kitchen that is as beautiful to admire as it is comfortable and convenient to work in. And if you assumed such a masterpiece would come at a considerable cost, you wouldn’t necessarily be correct. A major misconception Baer Design actively confronts is that bespoke, hand-made kitchen cabinetry and furniture are, for many households, prohibitively expensive. In fact, they frequently design for clients with tighter purse strings, crafting kitchens that, behind the beautiful façade of their cabinetry, are budget conscious.

ACHIEVING BALANCE BETWEEN AESTHETICS AND FUNCTIONALITY Launched in 2016, Baer Design offers clients over 20 years’ worth of interior design and wood crafting experience. They have completed numerous bespoke kitchen projects and a grand collection of furniture pieces, several of which are on show at their studio at the Art In The Yard Gallery in Franschhoek. Here, in the proud tradition of the original Danish designers, Baer Design creates furniture that is an honest ode to the wood from which it is cut and a temple for the human body (and occasional cat) it is intended to accommodate. SV

“We take naturally beautiful material and do the least amount to it to create elegant designs.”

ILLUMINATING TRENDS BY LAURA JONES 2018 brings an increased interest in lights and lighting. Updating your decor by tweaking light fittings is also an easy visual solve. There’s an awareness that lighting influences our moods and feelings and, as a result, we’re seeing a renewed focus on the quality, colour and energy of lighting. These new trends are making an ambitious entrance this season.

Industrial vintage twist Hipster-inspired designs of the industrial décor trend are still popular, but the vintageinspired trend has burst onto the scene with enthusiastic zeal. Early 20th-century Victorian style fittings have had an antique influence, think weathered paint effects and distressed patinas. We’re also seeing antique style bulbs and mechanical detailing with vintage pendants and sconces in soft gold and copper. Artisanal fixtures, manufactured by local artists and craftspeople, add creative expression with a personal touch. A handcrafted element is also a strong focal and talking point. If made with natural elements, all the better, as the focus shifts from tech to the natural world.

LIGHTING DECOR

Earthy luxury With such a focus on green living, an emerging trend in lighting design is natural or organic-styled lighting. There’s a focus on well-being that excludes the use of technology. The result is a delicate, earthy influence, inspired by nature and reflected in the use of organic materials. There’s a move towards low-cost recycling of metals and textiles over plastic. Casual, contemporary designs are extremely popular and glass features predominantly with its characterful elegance and colour choices.

68 Lighting.indd 69

2018/02/15 8:04 AM

DECOR LIGHTING

Mixed metals Warm metals are a serious décor trend this year particularly in pendant lighting which emulates the most beautiful jewellery. Shades and tons of soft non-reflective gold, copper and rose gold are ever popular as are steel and chrome but they won’t last forever. Look out for brass and silver metallics as they emerge from up and coming global trends. Beautiful homes will reflect any of these or a delicious combination of them. Texture is key – stippled, hammered and aged metals give a varied and interesting finish.

Concealed lighting Reading corners, rooms divided by lighting and little spaces for different tasks come together in one zone with a seamless finish. This is a look that’s practical for urban and office spaces. Comfortable corners allow for relaxation in style and offer a sense of gentle well-being, especially where concealed lighting provides ambience and subtlety. SV

ubbed "planetary healing", one of this year’s biggest wellness trends sees individuals and companies collectively realising the impact that our actions have on the earth and on our health. The good news? More and more businesses are creating products with an eco-friendly element, making it easier for us to make the right choice when it comes to food, fashion and skincare.

WEAR ETHICAL FASHION

Photography: Lyall Coburn

Treating clothing as a disposable product has serious environmental implications (fibre production uses considerable amounts of both coal and water), and although “fast fashion” is ever-present, some innovative local brands have adopted an environmentally responsible approach when it comes to manufacturing their pieces. Fashion and accessories brand The Joinery has focused their attention on finding sustainable solutions to both environmental and community issues through their design and product development. They make a range of products, from laptop bags and tech accessories to luxury slippers and full fashion collections, with fabric created from recycled plastic bottles, as well as hemp and other responsible fabrics. All of their products are made by

local artisans and sewing cooperatives in and around informal settlements in Cape Town. The company is run by sisters Kim and Natalie Ellis, who wanted to start a movement and culture where people really understand the need for sustainable fashion, without feeling like they have to compromise on style and quality. "Fashion to us is about creating timeless, effortless pieces and just as importantly is about empowering our communities and respecting people and our planet," says Natalie. The sisters have spent a lot of time researching, conceptualising and creating bespoke responsible fabrics, and the production of their luxurious felt fabric made from discarded plastic bottles has helped to create numerous jobs for plastic collectors, and at the same time keeps plastic bottles out of landfills. www.thejoinery.co.za

CHOOSE GREEN SKINCARE The cosmetic industry, sadly, has had a serious impact on the environment. Many major brands continue to test on animals, and while ingredients like microbeads (the tiny plastic particles often added as exfoliants in face and

body scrubs) have been banned in several countries around the world for their detrimental effect on marine ecosystems, they continue to be seen in many mainstream products in South Africa. Local skincare brand SKOON prides itself on trying to be as eco-friendly as possible. The company is a member of Beauty Without Cruelty, which means that none of their products are tested on animals and all of their plastic packaging is BPA-free. According to brand manager Emma Du Plessis, the idea for SKOON came to her when she read an article years ago that stated that a woman will host, on average, 515 toxic ingredients on her body at any given time because of the way modern cosmetics are formulated. "It occurred to Stella Ciolli (founder of SKOON) that there are very few alternatives, and if she wanted to make a difference, she had to roll up her sleeves and make something happen," says Emma. "We do not accept that good, effective skincare needs to contain toxic ingredients procured at great expense to the environment, and at the expense of women’s health and well-being." www.skoonskin.co.za

Avondale Wine Farm

EAT RESPONSIBLY If you’re looking for food that is grown locally, and is fresh, organic, and ethically reared, you’ll find a growing number of restaurants in and around Cape Town that are committed to sustainability. FABER restaurant at Avondale Wine Estate in Paarl boasts a farmto-table eating experience where all of the produce is sourced either from the farm or from nearby farmers. The menu changes seasonally, so that fresh, quality veggies are used, while their eggs and meat are produced in their own and surrounding fields. Dear Me in Cape Town’s city centre also takes the integrity of their ingredients seriously, and uses only local, seasonal produce. They are dedicated to reducing, reusing and recycling whenever possible, and handpick local suppliers who share their vision for ethical food production practices. For a list of some of Cape Town’s other sustainable restaurants, have a look at the Longtable Project

(www.longtableproject.com), a social enterprise that helps restaurants adopt more sustainable practices in line with global trends. It’s no secret that landfills generate a considerable amount of greenhouse gas emissions, pollute water supplies, and can cause serious damage to the health of the soil. For this reason, it’s important to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in these sites, both by

reducing household waste on a personal level, and by supporting businesses who recycle as much as possible. Zero Waste Hout Bay is an organisation that works to reduce waste that is produced and thrown into landfills. Some of their “zero waste” certified businesses (those that recycle dry waste) include The Lookout Deck, Suikerbossie Restaurant, The Workshop Pub, and Chapman’s Peak Hotel. It’s all about conscious living. SV

WINE TASTE

FOR THOUGHT

T

hat one-dimensional slogan once used by a beer company was totally off-the mark. Because real men – and women – do, in fact, drink pink drinks. And a lot of it when it comes to wine. Anyone who has spent a spring or summer in the South of France would know that Rosé wine is not so much drunk there as inhaled. And here, South Africans have reconnected with Rosé now that more producers are creating wines of a less syrupy sweet nature than those that were so hip, hot and happening in the bygone era of bell-bottoms, tiedye shirts, Monkey Gland steaks and Ford Cortina’s. Today’s Rosé wines are fresh, zippy and on the drier side while

BY EMILE JOUBERT

still exuding a perfumed fruitiness which makes the wine evocative, sexy and life-affirming. Rosé can be a blend of red and white grapes or it is made by bleeding the juice away from red varieties before the purple skin has had a chance to add too much colour to the elixir. The result is a variance in colour from Victoria Secret Spring Pink, a more robust salmon-flesh colour to a light rosy-hued onion-skin colour. On the mouth, the hit of skin and tannin adds a slight wad of briskness and depth, whilst maintaining a wine that is quaffable by the bottle. No swirling, sniffing or backwashing needed here with penning raptured notes and tallied scores:

Glen Carlou in Paarl

Rosé is chilled, laid back and great with most foods. One of the newer of these wines to hit the market is the impressive Glen Carlou Pinot Noir Rosé 2017 from the Paarl region. The farm might be more known for Chardonnay and their sterling reds, but it has always made one of the breeziest and fun-drinking Pinot Noir wines around. Now it has conjured a Rosé from these grapes which exudes all the features of Glen Carlou’s precise winemaking whilst offering an immensely enjoyable wine underscoring this category’s rise in popularity. The juice is bled from whole bunches of fruit and once cellarmaster Johnnie Calitz shows happiness with the colour, it undergoes a cool ferment and is handled reductively (no oxygen) to capture the pure expression of skin-kissed Pinot Noir. The result is a wine with a pale ruby colour and loads of berry and spring water perfume on the nose. Once it hits the mouth, the first impression is a bracing acidity – almost like jumping into a Llandudno beach dumper – before the charming flavours of strawberry, ripe red apple and plum take over. The modest alcohol of 12,5% allows you to analyse the wine by comfortably drinking

a whole bottle of it, and I can report that this Rosé remains alive and exciting in the mouth, with no fear of boring the drinker with cloying sugars or palate-numbing tannins. And oh yes, Rosé can never be too cold – add ice if necessary, it is your wine and you can do what you please. De Morgenzon from Stellenbosch has succeeded in gaining a huge and deserved reputation for excellence over the past ten or so years. This has mainly been for the world-class Chardonnay, Chenin

Cinsault is used, along with the white grape Viognier. And okay, I did say Rosé is meant for glugging down without any second thoughts, but the De Morgenzon is worth spending a bit of time on for those wine anoraks who like to converse and contemplate matters vinous. The colour is more ‘onion skin’ than ‘lingerie pink’, and the overall impression is a drier wine with a dusty grip on the palate. This has to do with the concoction of varieties that each bring a different component in terms of acidity, depth and flavour. Where the Glen Carlou is

De Morgenzon in Stellenbosch

Blanc and Syrah that cellarman Carl van der Merwe makes up on the hills overlooking False Bay and the Helderberg. But the range, which is very comprehensive, delivers quality at every level. A Rosé in De Morgenzon’s Garden Vineyards range is about as European as new world Rosés come and I developed a garlic breath and an irrepressible urge to don a Provencal beret just by smelling the wine from the 2017 vintage. For this wine, traditional Southern France red varieties Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache Noir and

all succulent fruit moreish, De Morgenzon has a floral aroma that reminds one of the dry potpourri stuff lying around on the Egyptian cotton sheets in your villa outside Marseilles. Icy cold as it should be, the wine’s flavours are crunchy and crisp: think green figs, sour cherries and crushed quince. There is a bit of tannin around, despite the wine not spending any discernible amount of time with the skins, which makes this a Rosé capable of complementing sturdy dishes, too, such as Moroccan chicken, bouillabaisse and even a real hot Indian curry. Rosé is, of course, not only reserved for still wines as anyone witnessing a bejewelled rap artist pouring pink

Dom Perignon Champagne over his white Ferrari can attest to. South Africa’s category of Cap Classique sparkling wines are showing more and more Rosé fizzes that are easy on the eye and great fun to drink. Kleine Zalze, a huge producer of wine in Stellenbosch, makes a fabulous Brut Rosé in the classic method of bottle-fermentation. For this, a still wine is made, then placed in a Champagne bottle where it undergoes a second fermentation whereby the bubbles are created. To be exact, there are 50 million bubbles in one bottle of this sparkling wine, so please appreciate each one. Kleine Zalze Brut Rosé is made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, both classic grape varieties used in the making of French Champagne. The wine streams from the bottle in a line of salmon-pink fizziness and the sight of that foam and those bubbles must be the most beautiful thing any thirsty person hopes to see. The nose is all strawberry and rose petals, warning you of some serious fun. When sipping, the first impression is that of softness, a seductive delicacy as if the winemaker had true respect for your tasting senses. There is a bit of pink marshmallow, some raspberry and blood orange on the palate, but a zesty line of acidity prevents the wine from clogging the mouth down. This is an all-day, all-night wine – as I find many sparkling wines to be – and is really delicious with sushi, seafood in general and a curried chicken salad. And Rosé should be enjoyed with the words “to life” because of all the wines out there, this is the wine of life. SV

ocated in the quaint farming town of Bonnievale along the Robertson Wine Valley route, an approximate 2.5 hours drive to the east of Cape Town, lies the wine farm of Weltevrede, meaning ‘peace of mind’ and ‘well satisfied’. Since 1912, the Jonker family (five generations thereof) have

been the keepers, managers, winemakers, and unquenchable source of passion behind Weltevrede. And the very same vineyards that were planted more than a century ago and in the decades since have remained the progenitors of the beautiful repertoire of wines produced here. “My vision for the wines of Weltevrede is to be a pure

expression of the terroir in which it is rooted. Our wines should have personality dictated by the soil. It should have a sense of place.” Philip Jonker, owner and winemaker. Today, the 160-hectare Weltevrede Wine Estate boasts enchanting wine-tasting experiences, gorgeous food, and comfortable accommodation, all in a prime location alongside the Breede River.

OVERNIGHT EXPERIENCE At Weltevrede Wine Estate, a collection of self-catering cottages with gorgeous vistas over the vineyards offer guests all the amenities they need to enjoy a comfortable night or weekend stay, while arrangements for food platters and, of course, the estate’s stunning collection of wine can be made prior to arrival. Morning on the farm is a special time of day, as the sun’s first light spills over the lush vineyards and the cacophony of the weaver, hoopoe, canary, and whydah birdcalls start up. After a coffee overlooking the magnificent view, and perhaps a brisk walk around the periphery of the vineyards, along the banks of the Breede River, there’s only one place guests should consider going next and that’s to Weltevrede’s restaurant for breakfast. A delightful establishment centred on a courtyard, complete with cherub and fountain, the restaurant at Weltevrede serves up a delectable selection of breakfast and lunch options, but if the plan is to indulge in a wine tasting afterwards – and so it should be - guests cannot go wrong with a hearty farm

breakfast with all the trimmings, which includes a crisp and fruity flute of Philip Jonker “The Ring” brut.

WINE TASTINGS AND CELLAR STORIES Perhaps Weltevrede’s most enchanting offering is a candlelit cellar tour and wine tasting. In the spooky darkness of the estate’s underground cellar, where candles are your only source of light and you share the cool with brooding wine bottles and rotund barrels, superstitions and fantasies are aroused, making for a thrilling experience. Sitting around a central table decked with flickering candles, guests are welcomed to taste their way through Weltevrede’s award-winning repertoire of wines, many of which are named after the soils in which they have been grown, such as the elegant “Place of Rocks” Chardonnay and the intense and sultry “Bedrock Black” Syrah. Then there’s the Vanilla Chardonnay from Weltevrede’s Simplicity Collection, the Philip Jonker “Entheos” Chardonnay Pinot Noir MCC, the smoky and peppery 1912 Cabernet Sauvignon (2016), and the decadently fruity and creamy 2016 Chardonnay of the same name. In between sips of wine, guests are treated to stories of Weltevrede’s quirky fourthgeneration owner and cellar master, Philip Jonker, whose idiosyncratic approach to philanthropy and entrepreneurship makes for the most delightful anecdotes. For those who aren’t too fond of dark or close spaces,

My great-grandfather was the first to plant vineyards in this area. Today, these vines are still anchored deeply in the heart of Weltevrede Estate. One of his vineyards is more than 80 years old and five generations of Jonker’s have already tasted the fruit from these same vines. - Philip Jonker

Weltevrede offers wine tastings in a beautiful tasting room bordering on the restaurant courtyard, where you can also sample the farm’s Heritage wines, “Oupa Se Wyn” and “Ouma Se Wyn”. These two sweet dessert wines bear the countenances of the estate’s founding father, Klaas Jonker, and Philip’s grandmother, Lisbeth Jonker respectively. Sweeping history, quirky

anecdotes, a unique and enchanting candlelit cellar tasting experience, gorgeous wines, accommodation with spectacular views, and delicious fare: Weltevrede Estate truly offers it all, making this an idyllic destination for anyone, local or foreign, looking to experience the Cape winelands at its very best. ne of South Africa’s biggest selling points is our abundant wildlife and yet, the general opinion seems to be that in order to see it, you need to journey outside of Cape Town. But, unbeknownst to many, the Mother City is alive with wildlife and, no, we’re not talking about the sozzled students stumbling

about Long Street. We’re talking about wild beasts, the likes of which starry-eyed tourists travel tens of thousands of kilometres to witness and take brave “selfies” with. True, we may not have lions roaming our streets, contrary to mislead foreign perceptions, but we do have baboons cavorting on the side of Sir Lowry’s mountain pass, dassies (rock hyrax) sun-bathing on exposed boulders, caracals prowling our peninsula, zebras mowing the lawns on the slopes of Table Mountain, ostriches in fields on the West Coast, and noisy African Penguins sharing the sand with beachgoers at Boulder’s Beach. Between July and December, our coasts receive annual visits from Southern Right and Humpback whales, some of which come so close to the shore that you can hear them singing to each other and blasting water from their blowholes. To get even closer to these mammoth marine mammals, Dyer Island Cruises (www.whalewatchsa.com) and Simon’s Town Boat Company (www.boatcompany.co.za) offer frequent whale watching cruises from Kleinbaai and False Bay respectively. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for smaller critters, such as African penguins, Cape fur seals, dolphins, and, if you’re really lucky, Cape clawless otters.

The Cape peninsula and surrounding flats, mountains, valleys, and even urbanized areas are riddled with pockets of nature that have persisted or been preserved in spite of our tireless efforts to dominate them. The Table Mountain National Park, for example, which is literally on the city’s doorstep, is home to rock hyrax or “dassies”, Eland, Red Hartebeest, Cape mountain zebra, the critically endangered Table Mountain ghost frog, tortoises, more than 20 snake species, and a glittering array of beautiful bird species, many of which aren’t found anywhere else in the country. Slightly further afield, but no more than an hour’s drive from the city, there’s the Cape Point National

Park (021 780 9010) to the south and the West Coast National Park (022 772 2144) to the north. Both afford visitors the spectacular coastal views for which our world-famous city is known and are home to a staggering diversity of mammals, reptiles, and birds. C

Cape Town is bursting at the seams with wildlife and birdlife. So, look up from your travel apps, camera’s viewfinder, out the window, and beyond the sweeping views; examine the rocks, ravines, cracks, crannies, fields, farmlands, sky, rivers, lakes, and the glittering ocean surface; look for movement or a break in the uniformity and the Cape’s glorious and abundant wildlife will be revealed to you. T

he Ritz is a worldrenowned name in (and practically a synonym for) luxury hotel accommodation and fine dining. In Cape Town, The Ritz Hotel occupies a prime location on the Atlantic Seaboard, affording guests and visitors astonishing views of the Cape’s mountains, the ocean-hugging suburbs of Sea Point and Green Point, the Atlantic Ocean, and the odd visiting whale. Rearing up from the foothills of Lion’s Head to a height of 23 floors, this sleek building with its modern aesthetic has just spent the past year undergoing a multimillion Rand makeover during which it was totally gutted and refurbished. And in December 2017, The Ritz Hotel in Sea Point reopened its doors to accept the influx of Cape Town tourists and locals looking to spend the festive season in relaxed style.

DÉCOR AND AESTHETICS The Ritz’ recent facelift comes 45 years after its original build in the 1970’s and, according to Marketing Manager Lisa Carey, was a much-needed rejuvenation.

Now, this iconic hotel has a fresh, contemporary style that pivots on a seductive, black palette, highlighted with elements of gold and smoky mirrored surfaces, as well as some fun and whimsical embellishments, such as the neon lights behind the reception desk and the fabulous Martinique banana leaf wallpaper, which was originally designed for the Beverley Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and had to be specially imported. The hotel’s accommodations are super sophisticated and corporate-chic with a sultry black design theme with crisp white linens. Every room has large windows that allow the sweeping ocean views and natural light to stream in. Some special amenities for hotel guests include unlimited complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, 24-hour in-room dining, a mini bar, and room safe.

“TOP OF THE RITZ” REVOLVING RESTAURANT The Ritz’ crowning glory (literally) is her revolving restaurant, a perennial favourite of Capetonians wishing to dine in fine style against a spectacular backdrop of glittering city lights and ocean moonlight reflections. Here, guests can embark upon a seven-course fine dining experience, while steeping in the intimate ambience and the sophisticated and luxurious surroundings.

round five hours from Cape Town, Oudtshoorn makes a good stopping point for those travelling to the Garden Route. But, if you’re drawn to the area’s pretty surroundings and Karoo hospitality, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy for a longer stay. Although Oudtshoorn is famous for being the “ostrich capital” of the world, the little town has much more to offer — whether you’re feeling active, or just want to relax with a glass of fine wine.

SEE THE SIGHTS Perhaps the area’s best-known attraction, and one of South Africa’s oldest tourist sites, the Cango Caves are an underground network of rock formations that can be accessed along with an experienced guide. Expect to see dripstone caverns, impressive formations and beautifully illuminated chambers.

There are a number of farms that are open to the public, and visitors are invited to interact with the birds and learn about the unique farming practices. The Cango Wildlife Ranch also gives visitors the chance to see animals close up. With a focus on education and conservation, the facility runs a cheetah preservation foundation, and boasts an interactive lemur exhibit, snake park, aviary, and crocodile area, to name a few.

WINE AND DINE For a wholesome meal in town, try Jemima’s. This low-key, but stylish restaurant serves up dishes made with local produce, most of which have a distinctly South African flavour. Try the home baked roosterkoek served with deep fried potato skins, farm cured meats and green fig, or the traditional bobotie made with Karoo lamb mince. For a freshly baked scone or a relaxed breakfast, Nostalgie does all the classics in a lovely garden setting. They also have a range of ostrich dishes on their lunch and dinner menus, so if you’re local craving some of the protein, try an ostrich burger, a fillet salad or carpaccio served with figs and blue cheese. For a little bit of Klein Karoo class, the Black Swan is a restaurant and wine bar with an eclectic offering of both local and international dishes. The ostrich fillet comes pan-fried and flambéed in brandy with roasted balsamic onions, while the

Karoo lamb chops are served with traditional pap and spicy chakalaka. There are also some great local desserts on offer, like Amarula crème brûlée, malva pudding, and don pedros. Be sure to explore the Klein Karoo wine route, which stretches from Montagu to Herold’s Bay. Close by Karusa Vineyard offers tastings in a rustic setting, and also has a craft beer microbrewery on site. A lot of the regions other estates are huddled around the nearby town of Calitzdorp and make for a lovely day trip. Try De Krans, Peter Bayly, and Boplaas for the port-style wines for which the area is known.

EXPLORE THE ART SCENE Oudtshoorn is known for its annual Afrikaans language arts festival, the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK), a platform for visual and performing arts, which takes place from 29 March – 4 April 2018. To savour more of the town’s cultural spirit, save the date for the Klein Karoo Klassique in August. The festival is a showcase of classical music, Klein Karoo cuisine, wines and local art, and includes exhibitions as well as practical painting workshops. This year's festival promises to be extra special, as it'll mark the tenth year for the event.

If you’re looking for a walking holiday, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Camino De Santiago is one of the most well-known and loved network of trails, weaving through Spanish villages and beautiful countryside, although there are lesser known walking routes all over the country if you want something quieter. With over a thousand kilometres of Mediterranean coast, as well as some interesting port cities and glitzy resort towns, beachlovers will enjoy a dazzling choice. Culturally vibrant Málaga is located on the Costa del Sol and boasts a lively art district, and a real sense of history (the

Further up the coast, Valencia has an altogether different look and feel, with its futuristic buildings, great selection of museums, and an exciting dining scene. Barcelona, known for its whimsical architecture and pretty seaside setting, also has a revered dining and party scene. Enjoy sundowners at the beach or

The Puerta del Sol square is the main public space in Madrid. In the middle of the square is the office of the President of the Community.

Packed with energy and art, Madrid boasts some of the world's finest galleries and is home to some of the work of Spanish greats like Picasso, Dalí, and Miró. While you'll easily spend days exploring the rich art scene (and marvelling at the mix of medieval and contemporary architecture), you'll want to sample some of the city’s culinary offerings too. The fine dining options are extensive, with award-winning spots like La Terraza del Casino that offers a 21-course tasting menu; Santceloni, where ingredients are sourced daily from Spanish

ports and markets; and Meson Txistu, where guests can enjoy traditional Basque cuisine. For a change of pace, and a chance to enjoy some of Spain's historic charm, Seville offers visitors the chance to wander through quaint, medieval lanes, and see baroque churches and beautiful palaces. The city also hosts some great festivals — the Semana Santa is celebrated over Easter and sees the town come alive with music, theatre and lively processions. Feria de Abril is also held annually, traditionally two weeks after the Semana Santa, and is a week of food, dancing and street parades.

ENJOY THE FLAVOURS Whichever part of Spain you choose to visit, the food is likely to be a highlight. A Spanish staple, tapas has gained global popularity, and if you’re familiar with these little dishes you’ll know why. In fact, many of these signature dishes traditionally served as appetisers and snacks, now take centre stage at restaurants around the world. Some well-known favourites include pulpo gallego, which is tender grilled octopus served simply with olive oil, salt and smoked paprika; boquerones fritos, crispy fried anchovies; tigres, mussels stuffed with minced onions and breadcrumbs; and croquettes, lightly breaded, creamy fritters often filled with ham. Other classics include patatas bravas, spicy fried potatoes; tortilla espanola, a traditional Spanish omelette; and a variety of cured meats, like

chorizo and jamón. If you get beyond the tapas menu, be sure to try an authentic paella, which can be made with a variety of ingredients depending on your taste — from shellfish, squid and eel, to pork, chicken and vegetables. Another hearty option is the traditional fabada, a rich stew made with beans and smoked sausages. Gazpacho, a cold vegetable soup typically made with tomatoes, cucumber,

peppers and onions, is a flavourful and refreshing choice. When travelling, dessert is, of course, a must, so don’t miss a taste of leche frita, a cold milk pudding encased in a crunchy fried dough; crema catalana, a custard dessert flavoured with cinnamon and orange rind; and the much-loved churros, fried dough pastries sometimes sprinkled with sugar or dipped in chocolate. ntense off-road adventures are not for the faint of heart. It does get easier though and a lot less daunting when you have experience. So, if your travel companion has over 65 years of experience within its brand, it’s one mark off the checklist. The brand-new Land Cruiser Prado from Toyota isn’t only the perfect companion for treacherous roads; it also lets you sit in the lap of luxury. A smooth transition between heart-stopping terrains and the tarmacs of town. The facelift has arrived, and it’s well worth it.

INSIDE OUT

THE BELLY OF THE BEAST The Land Cruiser brand is synonymous with rugged explorers taking on the Cape to Cairo road trip with their eyes closed. The Prado is the most luxurious and refined model within the Land Cruiser family, but that doesn’t take away its capability to deliver on any terrain. With an impressive 6-speed auto transmission that gets powered by a 4.0l petrol engine kicking out 202kW, anything is possible. With the ground clearance coming in at a formidable 215mm the Prado is capable of taking it all on. The

suspension has been adapted to handle the nearly 2.5-ton Prado effortlessly.

TALK IS CHEAP When you have a car that has this much history behind it and has this much presence you can’t put a price tag on it, it’s priceless. However, if you want the Prado parked in your driveway, it will set you back a cool R821 700 for the 3.0D TX model and from R967 200 for the 4.0 VX-L model. All models come standard with a 5 year/90 000 km service plan and a 3 year/100 000 km warranty. SV

The exterior design has been elevated to a robust level yet comes across as pleasantly refined in the same breath. The same talented designers that have allowed for this has also transported the Prado to the 21st century on the interior front. Leather all round as you slip into the driver seat. To your left, you’ll find an 8-inch touchscreen. The steering wheel has a beautiful matte finish with walnut wood blended in with the leather. All the bells and whistles can be found in this cockpit. From dual-zone climate control to a swift transition to 4x4 with the flick of a button. It’s all neatly tucked away, ready for adventure.

CARS RANGE ROVER VELAR

FIRST CLASS

2018/02/14 11:33 PM

RANGE ROVER VELAR CARS

The Range Rover Sport has been an all-time favourite, with the Evoque following hot on its heels after its launch in 2011, both equally popular. Little did we know that a sweet spot in-between these two needed filling. Welcome to the world, Velar! BY VANN VAN STADEN

STRAIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY If Range Rover hit the catwalks of Europe and released a high-end fashion collection, the Velar would be it. The Velar charms you from the get-go. The grill carries presence without being overly designed, it still screams Range Rover. The 22inch wheels are a showstopper. Let’s not forget the headline act; door handles that are concealed when locked and slide straight out again when unlocked, both a fashion statement as well as a safety feature, you could say the future

is here. The Velar comes with sustainable, premium textile seat material opposed to the usual leather.

DIGITAL AGE The Velar sports 2 x 10inch touch screens. Both screens are fully functional. From usual dayto-day functions like climate control, multimedia setup, seat adjustments and massages (yes, you heard me right!) as well as selecting your drive terrain, it’s all there at your fingertips.

ROCKSTAR The Land Rover family loves going off-road, they certainly have what it takes to tackle tricky terrains with the least amount of effort. The Velar, with its enticing 251mm ground clearance, is just the motivation you need to explore rocky terrains. Traction technologies like Terrain Response 2 and All Terrain Progress Control place a lot of faith in the Velars capabilities to handle the roads less travelled. Couple this with an all-wheel-drive system and fourcorner air suspension and you have a seasoned rock climber on your hands. Both diesel and petrol engines are available. The Diesel line-up sports 3 different engines, starting with the 2.0l four-cylinder engine that produces 132kW and 430Nm. The Petrol line-up also has 3 offerings, starting with a 2.0l

and going all the way up to a 3.0l model that kicks out an impressive 280kW.

PRICE TAG The Velar is a stunner. In a class of its own. Not really an SUV and most definitely not a mini SUV, it’s a model that holds its ground on its own and doesn’t share the podium with anyone else. For this, your price tag starts at R947 700 and goes up to R1 356 900 for the HSE R-Dynamic, and R1 529 300 for the First Edition which is a limited edition, money well spent. As with all new Land Rover vehicles, you’ll get a 5 year/100 000km service plan, a 5 year/100 000km maintenance plan as well as a 5 year/100 000km warranty. SV

T

he Western Cape is gaining increasing attention as a world destination for golf, and rightly so. With a constellation of pristine, emerald courses nestled into the province’s spectacularly beautiful and topographically voluptuous landscape, local and foreign golfing enthusiasts are truly spoilt for choice. What puts our golf courses in a class of their own? Here, you play side-byside with rugged mountain ranges, glittering oceans, garrulous birdlife, and even the occasional wild animal. Just a short drive from Cape Town, here’s a look at the province’s (and country’s) top courses.

PEARL VALLEY AT VAL DE VIE ESTATE Within the rugged embrace of the Drakenstein and Simonsberg Mountains in the Paarl wine valley lies 500-acres of impeccably conditioned golf course bordered by the Berg River and thriving vineyards. Pearl Valley carries a reputation as one of the country’s most spectacularly beautiful golf courses, which was no design accident. Pearl Valley is a work of art by pre-eminent golf course designer Jack Nicklaus and, since 2006, has consistently landed a spot among the top 10 courses in South Africa by Golf Digest magazine. It has also been named the Western Cape’s bestconditioned golf course every year for five years in a row (2010 to 2015). ARABELLA GOLF CLUB The Arabella Country Estate is home to an 18-hole championship course that is the design vision of lauded golf architect, Peter Matkovich. The course offers golfers a healthy challenge set against a spectacular backdrop of the Palmiet Mountain Range and the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, a haven for bird life and the Western Cape’s indigenous fynbos vegetation. At the 9th, 17th, and 18th holes, the course runs parallel to the Bot River Lagoon, the country’s largest natural lagoon, making Arabella Country Club a magnificent golfing destination complemented by its luxurious hotel and spa. STEENBERG GOLF CLUB Another beautiful golf course by Peter Matkovich, Steenberg Golf Estate shares its nest in Cape Town’s Constantia valley with the winery’s vineyards (of the same name). From every acre on this beautifully conditioned course, views of the dramatic Constantiaberg Mountains with their carpeting of lush forest can be savoured. The course itself is technically challenging and varied, featuring a mix of wetlands, flats, parkland, and fynbos. Afterwards, golfers can enjoy Steenberg Estate’s world-class offerings of a wine cellar, restaurant, spa, and luxuriously appointed accommodations. FANCOURT GOLF ESTATE Fancourt Golf Estate in the Garden Route encompasses three different courses - the Links, Montagu, and Outeniqua - all of which consistently feature in Golf Digest’s top 20 courses in South Africa. The brand has a solid legacy of sporting excellence with the Links, a challenging and unique course, currently taking the top spot in the country. The golf courses at Fancourt are set against the Cape’s stunning natural scenery and are laid out over gently undulating terrain and dunes, which offer golfers a decent challenge, especially when the wind picks up.
