SCENE

Three South African artists, each unique in their background and thematic concerns, create work that is thought-provoking and complex. From the effects of urbanisation to the intricate nature of identity and the nuance of social interaction, these artists’ pieces stir up a range of issues relevant to local and global audiences alike.

ANDREW NTSHABELE Born in the small town of Moruleng in North West, Andrew Ntshabele moved to Johannesburg as a child, where he spent most of his formative years. He studied Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg, where he was awarded the Ekurhuleni Thami Mnyele Fine Arts merit award in his third year. He has since exhibited his work at various spaces around the city. Much of Andrew’s work centres on the theme of urbanisation, and he draws inspiration from his own experiences of growing up in Johannesburg. His pieces, which are based on actual photographs he takes on his daily travels around the inner city and its outskirts, act as a social commentary on the socio-economic challenges faced by many of Johannesburg’s inhabitants. Andrew works with a combination of acrylic paint and collage to create work that deals with relevant issues like urban decay and the effects of rapid urbanisation on people’s living conditions in spaces.

CORNÉ EKSTEEN Corné Eksteen studied towards a degree in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa before going on to work in various positions in menswear design, interior decorating, and digital design. He began exhibiting his work in 1996, and his pieces have since been shown at exhibitions around the country, including galleries in Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, and Johannesburg. His work also appears in private collections in Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Corné’s work consists mainly of portraits, through which he explores themes of identity and its deconstruction. These pieces are designed to spark discussion about the complexity of personal identity as a series of fragmented concepts in a constant state of change. He draws inspiration from the world around him and describes himself as an ‘obsessive observer’, always with a camera in hand.

MILA POSTHUMUS Mila Posthumus grew up in Cape Town and currently lives and works on a farm in the Stellenbosch Winelands. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries across the country. The South African landscape, in particular, the city and town-scape, was central in her earlier work but, in recent years her focus has shifted toward portraiture and paintings with a decidedly narrative slant. Her characters are depicted with carefully observed emotion, and one has a sense of being offered a glimpse of a larger, unfolding story. One of the artist’s evocative works can be seen in the permanent collection at the War Museum of the Boer Republic in Bloemfontein. Mila works in oil on canvas and uses a limited colour palette which adds to the voyeuristic undertones in her paintings, making them appear almost like faded photographs. SV

TWO OCEANS MARATHON Known globally as “the world’s most beautiful marathon”, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is a 56 km ultramarathon and 21 km half-marathon held annually over the Easter weekend. crispy chewy nugget of rice with sustainably caught fish, umami aioli, wasabi furikake, and soy gel; spiced chicken, coconut yoghurt, spring onion, and wakame (a type of edible seaweed); and daikon maki with sesame mayonnaise and gardenia fruit prepared three ways. This was followed by an interlude of bone marrow butter rolled in black onion ash, served with minibaguettes so fresh out the fire that they exhaled a blast of steam as we cracked them open.

THE SECOND TIDE: KAISEKI TRAY Then came the Kaiseki tray featuring ramen noodles made from cuts of squid meat cooked in a rich buttery sauce; king oyster mushroom, celeriac, and leeks in a black truffle eel sauce; a tempura marogo leaf, quinoa, and chives; and game fish with seaweed dressing, koji cucumber, and katsuobushi (dried, fermented, and smoked skipjack tuna). This was followed by grass-fed beef with Sancho pepper and ponzu. Between the two tides, Chef Peter Tempelhoff presented us with a delightful, interactive palate cleansing experience. Into a small bowl filled with edible flower petals and herbs, he poured a small measure of liquid nitrogen from a stainless steel vessel, which bubbled, fizzed, and evaporated right before our eyes, leaving the petals and herbs frozen solid. We were instructed to take a little pestle and grind the contents of the bowl into a fine powder. He then placed a dollop of celery sorbet into the remains and voila: a palate cleanser that successfully engaged the eyes, ears, nose, hands, and mouth!

THE THIRD TIDE: SWEET KAISEKI The final course consisted of cherry “cheesecake”; Madagascan

Throughout the meal – all three heavenly tides of it - Chef Peter Tempelhoff carried the theme of serving small, perfectly balanced dishes. We were also struck by the intelligence of the carefully curated wine pairings and the delicious accents the wine imparted to the meal, from the fresh and fruity Saurwein “Chi” Riesling 2018 to the exquisite, complex, and velvety Morgenster “Lourens River Valley” 2003 Bordeaux-style blend.

DARLING OF THE CAPE TOWN FOOD SCENE Our meal at FYN was, truthfully, one of the best food experiences we’ve had. Every bite was new, interesting, and delicious and no corner of the palate wanted for seasoning or texture. With flawless service and a brilliant wine selection, we were left utterly bowled over. Chef Peter Tempelhoff, Chef Ashley Moss, and manager Jennifer Hugé have built something spectacular and its clear why FYN has so quickly endeared itself to the Cape Town food scene. SV

The kitchen, designed by Tim Lewis, and manufactured by M & L Creative Kitchens, is a linear, one-wall set-up, similar to what the couple has in their Réunion home. ‘We’d originally wanted it to be all white, but with the grey of the floors and walls, it would have been too cold,’ says Jens of Marie’s choice to add touches of turquoise. Many a vegetarian meal is cooked here and enjoyed on the six-seater dining set from Weylandts. The Tam Tam light adds additional playfulness and colour to the open-plan space.

THE EXTERIOR The exterior of the house is a contemporary dark grey, while its stone wall is built in traditional Cape style. Although located on a busy street, very little about the home is actually revealed from the outside. A large metal door sits between the stone wall and the house itself and leads into a small entrance lobby connected to a courtyard garden. Upon entering, there is an immediate sense of privacy, and a few steps lead up to the living space and its panoramic views of the city and nearby mountains. At night, an inverted pyramid roof glows to create a giant lightbox effect, a unique touch to the building’s sleek design.

ape Town offers a variety of outdoor pursuits, so for many locals, spending time in nature is really quite easy. From beaches and walking trails to seaside promenades and picnic sites, there are a number of options to choose from on any given weekend. Even so, many of us still end up spending most of our time inside as we try to balance work and home life. But, did you know that there is more to spending time outdoors than enjoying the views? According to a number of studies, being outside could go a long way in improving overall wellness. So, if you’re tempted to spend your weekend on the couch, think again. Put on your shoes and head out the door, for the sake of your health.

It’s no secret that physical activity helps to elevate mood and aid relaxation, but research now suggests that exercising in nature has added benefits, particularly in relation to mental health. Researchers at the UK’s University of Essex have dubbed the concept ‘green exercise’ and found that it helps to improve mood, promote better sleep, and boost self-esteem. If you’re looking for a way to incorporate ‘green exercise’ into your own regime, try one of the city’s walking trails. The Pipe Track is a Cape Town favourite — beginning at the junction of Kloof Nek and Tafelberg Road, the track extends along the side of Table Mountain, offering beautiful views over the Atlantic seaboard. It’s a relatively flat route, which makes it a good family stroll, plus it’s dog-friendly. Alternatively, outdoor yoga is a great way to both connect with nature and strengthen your body. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to get your fix of the vitamin, as just 15 minutes of sun a few times a week is all it takes to ensure your body’s levels are sufficient. If you could do with a little sunshine, why not enjoy a meal outside while the weather is still good? There are a number of great options in the winelands, where you can enjoy some good food in a beautiful setting. SWEETCORN AND BUTTERNUT FRITTERS WITH SMOKED SALMON AND SOUR CREAM Ingredients 150g sweetcorn kernels freshly cut off the cob 150g raw grated butternut ¼ red onion finely chopped 50ml olive oil 50ml milk 1 egg 80g cake flour ½ teaspoon caraway seeds 5 sprigs parsley chopped Salt and pepper to taste 100ml sunflower oil for frying 200g smoked salmon 125ml sour cream 1 lemon cut in quarters Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180C 2. Combine all dry ingredients 3. Separately combine all wet ingredients including sweetcorn,

butternut and herbs etc 4. Add the wet to the dry by making a well and slowly stirring the mixture until it has combined 5. Use a wide based frying pan and over a medium heat add the sunflower oil, once the oil is hot add the sweetcorn fritter mix in dollops (aim for 6 fritters in total) and turn over once golden 6. Place the fried fritter on an oven tray and bake for 5 minutes to ensure the inside is cooked Assembly 1. Place 3 fritters on a plate 2. Top the fritters with half of the sour cream 3. BUDDHA BOWL WITH HUMMUS AND FALAFEL BALLS

SERVES 2

Ingredients 10 medium sized falafel balls, cooked – homemade or bought in 150g cooked quinoa 100g carrot sticks ¼ hot chilli chopped ½ garlic clove crushed 5 spring parsley chopped 1 avocado halved and seasoned with lemon juice, salt and pepper 1 tomato quartered 50 ml olive oil 20 ml balsamic vinegar 20 ml soy sauce Salt and pepper to taste 100ml regular or beetroot hummus Garnish: rocket leaves, micro herbs and sesame seeds Method This is mostly an assemble dish 1. Combine the quinoa, garlic, chilli, parsley, olive oil, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar 2. Season the quinoa to taste 3. Place the quinoa mix on the side of a large bowl 4. Place all the remaining ingredients alongside each other 5. Top with a few rocket leaves, micro herbs and a sprinkling of sesame seeds

BLUEBERRY MUFFINS Ingredients for muffins 200g cake flour 100g castor sugar 2 eggs 60ml milk 10ml vanilla Pinch of cinnamon 125g blueberries 10g baking powder Method Preheat your oven to 180C convection. Grease your 12-pan muffin tin

1. Cream the butter and sugar until white, light and fluffy 2. Add the eggs one at a time and continue whisking 3. Sift the flour and baking powder separately 4. Fold into the egg mixture 5. Add the milk and vanilla and mix until a smooth batter is formed 6. Add the blueberries 7. Divide mixture into the prepared muffin tin 8. Bake for 20 minutes

WINE FOR THOUGHT Oh, wouldn’t the wine world be so much poorer without the dreamers, the visionaries and the adventurous spirited? BY EMILE JOUBERT

I

just love the men and woman who shun convention — those who have an untameable obsession for the growing of grapes and the making of wine in new, uncharted regions. Sure, their efforts don’t always work out, but when they do, the gamble certainly pays off, providing joy to both the winemakers and the wine-lovers who get to taste something unique.

A WINE HERO My most recent wine hero is David Trafford from Stellenbosch. He is still the same quiet, unassuming and thoughtful guy who made great wines at his De Trafford farm in Stellenbosch, the most notable of which is the Chenin Blanc and Noble Late Harvest. I haven’t forgotten the excellence of De Trafford, but David is currently responsible for — to my mind — some of the most exciting wines coming from South Africa. This time, he is at work in Malgas, a one-horse town located next to the Breede River, some 15km’s from where the expanse of water flows into the Indian Ocean. A frequent visitor to this wild region, David began to dream about the wine-making potential in the area’s ancient rocky soils. Surely, he thought, if the vines would grow, the wine would be uniquely individual, offering a taste of place? David planted his first vines in 2003, producing his first vintage in 2007. Now, David’s dream, named Sijnn, is releasing one stunning vintage after the other. As far as vineyard plantings go, David chose wisely: he has Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne on the white side, and on the red side Syrah, Touriga Naçional, Trincadeira, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon.

THE TASK OF TASTING

MEETING A LEGEND

As I settled down to the taxing task of tasting and scrutinising wines after a punishing festive season of unbridled glugging, I could hardly have asked for better wines with which to begin the year’s scribbling than the new offerings from Sijnn. Once again, I was reminded of how absolutely terrific they are — individual and character-laden, expressive of that tough, raw and never-to-be-tamed part of the Southern Cape from where they come. The Sijnn White 2017 is drafted from Chenin Blanc (84%), Viognier (13%) and Roussanne (3%). The approach in the cellar by David and his assistant Charla Haasbroek seems pretty intuitive. For the Sijnn White, some batches were whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation in the barrel (French oak, 11% new) was spontaneous, while maturation was done for 10 months. The wine is driven by the features of extreme Chenin Blanc you find from unforgiving geography. Dry, poor soils and pummelling winds keep yields down to three tons a hectare, even on vines scarcely a decade old. On the nose, the fruit is loud and brash, with loads of honeycomb, potpourri and torn dried fynbos. You rise to it and want to dive in. It’s delicious.

Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Green — the same gentleman whose names are found on the popular South African wine range. The range has been going since 1942, and Douglas Green was also a pioneer in his day as he tried various new wine styles and marketing mannerisms. When I asked Mr Green how today’s wine portfolio compares to what it looked like five decades ago, the word ‘sherry’ popped-up frequently as this used to be one of the more popular wine styles. Sadly, this is no longer the case. Sherry is an amazing wine — one of my favourites — and South Africa has a great history of making them. Locally made wines can no longer be called sherry because of EU regulations, but Douglas Green has been thinking out of the box again. The company now imports real sherry from its home of Jerez, that exotic region in southern Andalusia in Spain, all under the Douglas Green label.

THE MAKINGS OF A MASTERPIECE Despite being of Irish heritage, I don’t do bets. That said, I am willing to wager the Sijnn Red 2015 is a wine destined for greatness. Sijnn Red 2015 comes in at Syrah (47%), Touriga Naçional (19%), Trincadeira (19%) and equal quantities of Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon. Honestly, I was almost irritated by the brash confidence of this wine. I mean, the vines are only ten and eleven years old, it’s only the eighth time this wine has been made, and already it commands the presence of a South African masterpiece. Oh, just have a whiff of that assured whack of savoury and brooding fruit on the nose. And while you’re at it, taste the layer-upon-layer of viscerally enchanting black fruit, all currants and berries. Elegant and refined are great elements to have. But when there is a note of aggressive power to meet the classy suaveness, that’s when a wine — for me — makes perfection seem possible.

THE ART OF SHERRY There are three sherries in the range: Medium Dry, Pale Cream and Medium Cream (in order of sweetness). All of them are made in Spain from the traditional Palomino grape, aged in massive wood vats, and offer good value at under R150 a bottle. Let that sink in — grown and made in Spain by a sherry master. Bargain, baby. My favourite of the range is the Medium Dry . It’s not quite as bonedry as the fino-style but offers all the complexities in texture and flavour that makes sherry such a wonderful drink. The secret to sherry is the slight fortification — grape spirit is added to stop the fermentation, allowing the grapes’ optimum fruit expression to remain. A layer of yeast, known as flor, covers the wine during ageing, giving it a characteristic nutty, waxy and dry fruit flavour. To enjoy sherry, please do not pour it from the drawing-room cabinet into one of those thimblesized short stem glasses. Cool the bottle as you would a white wine. Splash copiously into a broad, deep glass. And drink it on its own or with savoury dishes. And when the Cape cold fronts start rolling in, the sweet heart of the Douglas Green Medium Cream sherry will certainly warm the cockles. SV

CARMEN STEVENS & PIA WATERMEYER Kunjani Wines, Stellenbosch From humble roots, Carmen Stevens rocketed through the ranks to become the head winemaker at the award-winning Amani Vineyards and now Kunjani Wines in Stellenbosch. She is also the creative driving force behind her Naked Wines label and is a powerhouse of experience and talent, which she is dispensing to Kunjani Wines co-owner and general manager, Pia Watermeyer. Pia’s background is in business and graphics design, but her love of people and the winelands led to the birth of a new venture in the wine and hospitality industries. Together, these two passionate, astute women comprise a dynamic female duo that has successfully turned out a gorgeous range of red and white wines under the Kunjani label.

JESSICA SAURWEIN Saurwein Wines (Elandskloof) By day, Jessica Saurwein worked in sales and marketing at various wine farms; by night, she crafted wines of such an exquisite calibre that the city’s finest restaurants adorned their menus with her creations. Thankfully, since October 2017, she has dedicated herself full-time to her once side project and her crowning achievements are the succulent, earthy Saurwein “Nom” Pinot Noir (made from grapes sourced from a Kaaimansgat vineyard near Elandskloof) and elegant, perfumed Saurwein “Chi” Riesling (made from grapes sourced from a vineyard in Elgin). Both wines have performed spectacularly since their maiden vintages, giving Jessica Saurwein the unofficial, yet much-deserved title of “Queen of Pinot Noir”. Photographed by Charlie Stein

NATASHA WILLIAMS Bosman Family Vineyards, Wellington In 2018, Natasha Williams was promoted to winemaker at the Bosman Family Vineyards in Wellington. Here, next to cellarmaster Corlea Fourie, she orchestrates the crafting of the estate’s full range of wines, as well as the newly released Nero, the very first wine of its kind in South Africa. Made from the hardy and drought-resistant Sicilian red grape varietal Nero d’Avola, the silky, complex, and delicious Bosman Nero is a credit to Natasha’s palate and winemaking skills. Natasha is helping to drive an important shift within the wine industry by promoting the use of grape varietals that can withstand the Cape’s drought-stricken environment.

SALÓME BUYS-VERMEULEN Lozärn Wines, Robertson

“After a full circle of seasons in the vineyard, you get to bottle your love and passion and share that vintage with others… forever captured.” It was love at first sip when, in 2012, winemaker Salóme Buys-Vermeulen tasted a glass of Chilean Carménère, a red wine grape varietal originating from the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France. This led to planting the Carménère varietal on Doornbosch, home of Lozärn, which would become the progenitor of not only the first wine of Lozärn’s boutique range but also a rare varietal for South Africa. Over the ensuing years, it was joined by several other Bordeaux cultivars, including a gold Michelangelo Award-winning Sauvignon Blanc and Carménère Rosé. Salóme marked her 10th year in the wine industry in 2018 and describes her work as “sensory science”. She is also, clearly, a talented wordsmith!

hen it comes to easy trips from Cape Town, we are spoilt for choice. Head in any direction, and you’re bound to stumble upon a place worth stopping. Just an hour’s drive from the city, Paarl is one such spot. The town takes its name from the pearl-like granite outcrop that stands on the crest of the mountain, but its beautiful setting is really just the beginning of what it has to offer.

TASTE The second oldest wine route in the country, the Paarl region is perhaps best known for its Shiraz. That said, you’ll find a range of other varietals along the way. Spice Route offers wine tasting with beautiful views of the

Simonsberg mountains, with a special focus on artisanal, small batch wines from the Swartland. If hops are more your style, you can pop into the Cape Brewing Company on the same premises for a taste of their craft beer. In fact, there’s something for everyone at this pretty spot — De Villiers Chocolate does tutored tastings; Wilderer Distillery offers grappa and gin; and DV Café is open for daily ice cream and sorbet tastings. For more great wines, there’s no need to travel far. Fairview does a fun cheese and wine tasting, while Mellasat is known for their award-winning (and quite unique) white pinotage. Ridgeback Wines offers tastings in their restaurant, and there’s the option to sit outside on the deck overlooking a dam.

EXPLORE If you find time between the wining and dining for something more active, the hike up Paarl Rock offers beautiful views of the area. You can access the rocks by entering the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, which also has a number of other walking trails of varying lengths, mountain biking routes, picnic spots and a dam. The Afrikaans Language Monument on Paarl Mountain (known locally as Taalmonument) is also worth a visit for the spectacular views. There are also free guided tours available, children’s play areas, and a coffee shop. A great way to enjoy the space is to attend one of the regular full moon picnics — the last one of the season will be held on 22 March. SV

I

have never felt quite so lost as I did in Morocco. The old cities can feel dizzying, the landscapes endless. But there is something quite magical about letting go of a plan in favour of simply discovering whatever the journey holds. For me, a trip to this North African gem began in lively Marrakesh and led to the ancient city of Fez, before turning into a road trip through the mountains and down to the Atlantic coast.

THE PINK CITY Marrakesh is a city so rich in colour and energy; you could spend days exploring its maze of souks, haggling for olives, sweet treats, lanterns and rugs, or simply sipping on mint tea at its countless cafés. Known as the Pink City, because of the colour of its ubiquitous clay walls, it’s located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains — visit in the cool seasons and you’re likely to see them covered in snow. When in Marrakesh, take time to walk its bustling alleys, but when you need a break from the hustle, the Jardin Majorelle is well worth a visit — the garden is full of striking desert plants and the blue villa, which was once home to artist

Jacques Majorelle, was beautifully restored by fashion designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge in the ‘80s, and now houses a collection of jewellery and artefacts. At dusk, you won’t want to miss a walk through the Djemaa el-Fna, the city’s main square. The energy is overwhelming, and you’ll see storytellers, henna artists and acrobats come out to entertain the crowds, in a tradition that has lasted over a thousand years. Grab an orange juice from one of the vendors (you’ll never taste sweeter) and find a seat at the string of outdoor grill restaurants for a night out with a difference.

From Marrakesh, we took the train north to Fez, the country’s second largest city and one that is surrounded completely by a wall dating back to the eighth century. The history is palpable in this city — its medinas are authentically preserved, you’ll find the world’s oldest university tucked away in an alley, and donkeys still pull carts through the maze of streets too narrow for cars. Forget about finding a map on your phone — the walls of the city are so thick, the alleys so like a labyrinth, there’s little chance of finding your way but to follow your own sense of direction. Embrace the feeling of being lost and find a rooftop restaurant where you can enjoy a traditional tagine — a slow-cooked stew prepared in a ceramic dish and served with couscous and warm, fresh bread. An easy day trip from Fez, you’ll find the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and offers the chance to see a well-preserved basilica, beautiful floor mosaics and buildings dating as far back as the third century BC.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE? Why would anyone want to defy every fibre, every nerve of their survival instinct and leap into the void at 12,000 feet? ercedes-Benz is synonymous with top of the range luxury sedans and SUV’s. We even saw them enter the bakkie market with their X-Class, putting a refined spin on this robust segment. As for their entry-level offering, they gifted us with the A-Class back in 1997. Since then, we have seen a couple of facelifts for this range, the latest of which was released towards the end of 2018. Dare I say we were not disappointed.

FACE VALUE The new A-Class offers more utility value, making it more youthful than ever. That said, it has grown up in many ways. The purist, surface-accentuating design of the new A-Class is the next step in the MercedesBenz design philosophy of Sensual Purity. Its striking sporty exterior is bigger than its predecessor — 120mm longer, 16mm higher and 6mm wider — but, 20kg lighter. The vehicle is visually extended by the longer wheelbase and character line along the side.

The A Class is available in two variants — the A 200 and the A 250 Sport, with the diesel model expected in South Africa later this year. Both models benefit from new engines. The A 200 is powered by a 1.33-litre unit, which generates 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque with a 7G DCT dual-clutch transmission (5.2 l/100 km). The 2.0-litre engine of the A 250 Sport generates 165 kW and 350 Nm and is available with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission, which provides a claimed fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100 km. New features for both engines include CAMTRONIC for the intake camshaft and particulate filter as standard. As standard, the new A-Class is equipped with a comfort suspension with steel springs and DYNAMIC SELECT. The comfort suspension has been lowered by 15mm and specially configured springs and dampers for more sporty characteristics. The suspension with active damping control enables the driver to choose the preferred damping characteristics.

UNDER THE HOOD The rear-wheel-drive 300 SPORT features Jaguar Land Rover’s 221 kW/400 Nm 2.0-litre fourcylinder Ingenium petrol engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination means the XE can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.7 seconds. Standard on all Jaguar XE models including the 300 SPORT, torque vectoring by braking helps to maximise control through corners by providing controlled independent braking on the individual inside front and rear wheels. The system delivers outstanding sports car-like agility and added driver confidence. Also standard on all XEs, all surface progress control is a lowspeed cruise control that helps with low traction situations in all weather conditions so that drivers can concentrate on steering, while Jaguar drive control allows drivers

to select various drive modes at the touch of a finger. Settings range from dynamic with faster gear shifts and sportier kickdowns, to eco with earlier upshifts and more efficient transmission programmes.
