HELLO EDITOR’S NOTE
E
verything starts looking better and feeling better in Spring, automatically our bodies start harvesting stronger, better, more positive thoughts as we climb out of a somewhat hibernation to start appreciating the warmer weather and striking new blooms. This edition sees us through the next few months with great ideas on home & décor renovations, stunning local restaurants to visit, and a welcoming travel section, with both local and international getaways, to set us off. We have listed some mustvisit events to attend and a few activities too to get our endorphins ready to tackle the high-paced
lifestyle that lies ahead. My personal highlights of this edition include our décor trends pages, we have some high-end brands featured and I’m just in love with practically all of their pieces. The Shortmarket Club ranks high for me too, I need to start planning my next visit soon; and our trail running feature, highlighting an exclusive interview with Cape Town’s very own Ryan Sandes. Don’t forget to take a look at our selected wines for the season and join our wine club, email wineclub@southernvines.co.za And if you’re looking to get hold of me, email me on lauren@southernvines.co.za

ARTSCENE CHRIS DENOVAN
2011 marks the year of Chris Denovan’s solid artistic formation. Edged on by loss, he quickly redirected his emotions to reflect on canvas instead of harbouring internal chaos. In a few short years Chris has mastered the stroke of a paintbrush and transforms a blank slate into portrait-style paintings, often dangling between the realms of realism and abstraction. Oil and enamel is his ‘go-to’ medium which he spends hours and hours perfecting on stretched canvas. His inspiration is captured all around him from everyday people and their diversities that make them uniquely South African. Chris’s key pieces hang at the StateoftheART Gallery in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

ART WHAT’S HOT
Reacquaint yourself with the old, and familiarize yourself with the new; these outstanding works of art and their masters have a lot to show off. “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” - Pablo Picasso
JENNY PARSONS Jenny Parsons, based in Riebeek West, is an urban landscape painter working mostly in oil on canvas and chalk pastels. In Jenny’s view a landscape painting is a place for the eye and mind to play, where the experience of the landscape and the act of painting hold equal importance. Her work shows a fascination with vertical objects on the landscape; trees, buildings, lampposts and other structures; as well as the ‘drawings’ on the land created by roads, paths and other demarcations. Her work has been on display at various galleries, both locally and internationally. Visit 99Loop Art Gallery in Loop Street, Cape Town to view some of Jenny’s outstanding pieces www.99loop.co.za

DONALD GREIG Donald Greig’s passion lies within the creation of bronze sculptures drawing his inspiration from Africa’s wildlife and his many safari experiences. He started sculpting in 1993 with his first piece being a small elephant which was later cast in silver. The more recent sculptures include leopards, rhinos and crocodiles, monkeys, tortoises, warthogs and meerkats. Sculptures vary in size from small to lifesize. In 2009, together with his wife, Ali, they opened a
gallery in Cape Town’s dry docks at the Waterfront with an adjoining foundry. A few years later in 2016 they moved to new premises close to the highly anticipated Zeitz MOCCA, Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The new premises have three foundries, two fine art galleries as well as a 3D company focused on the scanning and scaling of sculptures. It’s the largest bronze-pouring foundry group in Africa. The Donald Greig Gallery & Foundry can be found at the ‘Port of Cape Town’ at the V&A Waterfront www.donaldgreig.co.za

WHAT’S FOR THE FOOD ON IN CONSTANTIA? LOVER Earth Fair Market
J
ooles Kilbride and Hailey Donald are longtime residents of the Constantia Valley, and have always worked with the local tourism and hospitality industries. Completely in love with the region’s lifestyle, landscape and friends, they recently started Constantia Valley Tourism Office, which has given them the opportunity to share their passion for the beautiful area with guests from around the world. Whether you love good food and wine, a scenic stroll, or are tempted to try something new, they told us what not to miss on a visit to the valley...
A FEW FAVOURITE THINGS When it comes to getting out and about, Jooles can't get enough of the great outdoors, and she doesn't have to go far to get her fix of fresh air and gorgeous surroundings. "Being someone who loves running and hiking with friends, I really do feel spoilt for choice here," she says. Hailey, on the other hand, really loves the range of fresh and organic produce that's so easily available in the area, and visits local markets regularly.
WINING AND DINING Jooles and Hailey are both avid food and wine lovers, so living in a region that boasts an outstanding awardwinning wine route, and is home to two of the Eat Out Restaurant Awards top ten restaurants in South Africa, is bliss! "What we really love is that there is something for every mood. It is
no lie to say that we very rarely leave the valley when it comes to socialising," says Jooles. Hailey agrees: "We have loads of hidden gems in the Constantia area, which are great for grabbing a coffee with friends or a breakfast with my boyfriend, especially when the sun is out."
With over 40 traders, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to fresh produce and tasty treats. Open every Wednesday 3pm to 8:30pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm.
THE IDEAL WEEKEND For the perfect weekend in the valley, the tourism office suggests starting with an early walk through the vineyards or greenbelts followed by a coffee and breakfast at one of the local restaurants. With ten wine farms to choose from, an afternoon of wine-tasting is a must. Every farm has its own character, so choose one that best meets your style. "If you're feeling adventurous, there is also zip lining, a bike park and hiking tours," adds Hailey. If shopping is more your thing, browse one of the numerous boutiques for jewellery, clothes, handmade furniture or decor. She suggests ending the day with a glass of top quality wine, and a local cheese and charcuterie board as the sun sets over the beautiful landscape. SV
FOR THE ENERGETIC Constantia Park Run Park Run is a free, weekly 5km run on the Constantia Greenbelt held every Saturday morning at 8am. It’s open to anyone and the route is a beautiful trail near trees and streams.
FOR THE COLLECTOR Alphen Antiques & Collectables Market Every second and fourth Sunday of the month, this market is held at the Alphen Community Centre Hall.
For more information on wine farms, accommodation, restaurants, shops, services and more ideas for things to do in Constantia, visit Constantia Valley Tourism at constantiavalley.com or call 076 742 5366.

A
lthough The Shortmarket Club only recently opened its doors, the place has already created a buzz on the Cape Town restaurant scene. With an enthusiastic and experienced team, the space offers guests an indulgent menu in a very lavish, but comfortable setting. With an emphasis on delicious food, every element of the restaurant – from the flavour combinations on the menu, to the impeccably chosen interior design and atmospheric lighting – has been carefully put together to create an experience for all the senses.
THE VIBE Set in a beautiful old heritage building off trendy Bree Street, the restaurant offers a setting where guests can relax and soak up an atmosphere that is both comfortable and luxurious. Designed by coowner Sandalene, the interior space has an opulent, old-world feel, with leather and wood finishes, stained glass doors and a dark colour palette in mainly black and aubergine shades. High ceilings, leather booths and an assortment of carefully chosen artworks give the place an undeniably high-class atmosphere. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant can be enjoyed for any occasion – be it an after-work get together, drinks at the bar, or a long meal with friends. According to chef Wesley Randle, it’s the kind of place where people should take their time and have fun.

THE FOOD Many of the dishes available are classic with a modern twist – for breakfast, expect options like egg soldiers with artichoke brioche, pancetta, burnt parmesan and onion; quinoa granola with buffalo yoghurt, grapefruit, wild honey and matcha; and Scotch eggs with wild mushrooms, kale and grated truffle. For lunch and dinner, you’ll be spoilt with a number of indulgent choices, from West Coast mussels and crispy octopus, to more hearty mains like lamb rump with ricotta, pine nut and fennel seed roasted leeks; hot smoked aubergine and ash-baked celeriac; and chestnut and fynbos roasted petit poussin. The restaurant also offers a grill section, where you can expect rib eye on the bone and chalmar fillet with a choice of unique sides – think duck fat roasted potatoes and fennel fondant, for
example. The desserts are just as tempting, and whether you feel like something fruity or rich, you’ll find something to suit your taste, be it caramelized lemon tart with strawberry and amasi ice cream; a rhubarb mess with mascarpone and rose and ginger meringue; roasted apple pie with celeriac ice cream and brandy custard; or chocolate soufflé with hazelnut parfait.
THE DRINKS Aside from the extensive menu, the restaurant also houses a stylish bar area. Here you'll find an enticing menu of cocktails, with the option of bar snacks like oysters, Malay spiced nuts, olives and organic radish with butter. The wine list won't disappoint, and if beer is more your flavour, there are a number of craft beers available. Other than that, expect options of all the usual ingredients -- gin, brandy, whiskey, rum and liquers -- necessary for a festive evening out. The bar itself is separated from the dining room by big stained glass sliding doors crafted in Argentina, and offers a view of the open kitchen. It's the perfect spot to have a pre-dinner drink and watch the chefs at work. Vintage-style lamps hang over the bar, and with its black and dark purple walls, the look is unquestionably elegant. SV

EAT
Right on our doorstep and a few a bit further out, these are our suggestions on local hot spots to grab a bite. CATHARINA’S AT STEENBERG Catharina’s, a long standing favourite, has appointed a new chef to take the reins and breathe new life into their menu. Chef Archie Maclean has done just that, he’s put his spin on the favourites and has also spiced things up with a few new dishes whilst staying true to the estates routes and ethos. The cuisine is contemporary comfort food including some exciting dishes like the ostrich fillet with apple purée, parsley and preserved lemon barley, truffled apple salad, red onion and walnut vinaigrette; and cauliflower and parmesan gnocchi, beetroot purée with a beetroot, mushroom and basil ragout. Chef Archie has recently revealed his new tasting menu not to be missed. WHERE: Steenberg Estate WEBSITE: www.steenbergfarm. com/catharinas PHONE: +27 21 713 7178
CHEYNE’S Cheyne’s, based in Hout Bay, is most definitely a top contender for some of the best Asian fusioninspired cuisine in Cape Town. Their menu is split up into sea, land, earth, and happy endings sections each housing delicate dishes from its relevant categories. The portions are tapas-style and so we suggest you order a minimum of 3-4 plates amongst 2 people, also a great way to sample more than just one dish in one sitting. Plates to look out for include the firecracker crayfish with beetroot kimchi from ‘sea’, the Tokyo beef slider with mushroom cream and caviar from ‘land’, the flamegrilled edamame beans with yuzu butter and truffle salt from ‘earth’, and the white chocolate and sesame semifreddo from ‘happy endings’. oca Llisa, Ibiza, 150km off the Spanish coastline: Essentially a villa, and situated on the exclusive residential estate Roca Llisa, this incredible home designed by South African based architects Stefan Antoni from SAOTA and Mark Rielly from ARRCC is, in anybody’s book, a triumph of architectural island splendour. Roca Llisa overlooks the transparent, turquoise Mediterranean and flat stretches of white sand with views of the smallest of the Balearic Islands, Formentera. Situated midway between Ibiza town and Santa Eulalia del Rio, close to the villages of Jesus and Cala Llonga, the luxurious estate bakes peacefully in the hot Spanish sun, enough of a distance from the frantic Ibiza summer crowds. When the homeowners, annual visitors to Ibiza and previous Cape Town inhabitants, approached Stefan Antoni and Mark Rielly to refurbish and alter
their existing three-storey house, the contemporary makeover of a classic Mediterranean villa was born. A family retreat, the residence is a restful sanctuary and a collection of meditative spaces functioning simultaneously as a plush lifestyle and entertainment venue for family and large gatherings of friends. Situated on a wooded slope, the site area covers 2208m². Composed of a series of large rectangular structures, cleverly juxtaposed against blue skies, the villa reflects natural white light in the heat of the constant sun. The economical, simplistic use of this median geometry is a theme that imparts quiet simplicity, encouraging contemplative stillness and calm throughout the house. SAOTA’s architectural design idea focused on the use of organic materials, including timber and stone, to embed the building into its site. On approach from the steep angle of the palm tree studded driveway to the steps at the front door, an intriguing, floating sculpture greets visitors, arresting

the eye, setting the scene for something quite unexpected. A curiously skinny rectangular picture window with an oversized frame offers a peek of what’s inside. Interior architects and decorating team Mark Rielly, Sarika Jacobs, Michele Rhoda and Chad Brander of ARRCC say they colluded to focus on more tactile, organic materials indoors to add a sense
of homeliness and warmth to the contemporary architecture. “Our interiors are fashioned and inspired by the dynamics of the site and are mostly infused with the poetry of light, landscape and water” says Rielly. Nowhere is this more notable than from within, with cool white being the predominant feature.

Lovely clean, open space stretches out to meet a horizontal blue strip of glittering ocean beyond. Large sliding, glass doors to the outdoor terraces blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. Generous amounts of raw timber, stone and marble cladding are the decorative backdrops in different areas of the house, contrasting gently against fresh white walls. These elements are design features that are left unadorned, making a powerful statement. The different textures of understated cottons and linens in the bedrooms add warmth and depth to the minimal and clean interior. In all though, the organic colour palette highlights some very unusual features, such as the elongated kitchen and its bar stools, that appear almost empty in minimalist form. An eclectic mix of up-to-date, contemporary designs, artisanal pieces and one-off custom creations reflect the owners’ broad appreciation and understanding of art and design. Well placed, each piece offers a focal point and a visual diversion from the use of white. Easy, comfortable furniture warrants minimal attention and fuss and provides maximum comfort, fitting in effortlessly with its surroundings. Having three levels within the home offers privacy and also visual interest. Each provides a different function connected via easy stairways. All elements within the levels are kept simultaneously casual and elegant and express a modern relaxed mood, without being excessively layered; the bathroom is functional
and inviting with its white half-egg shaped tub, the main bedroom’s lounge area is informal and low-key, yet luxurious. The primary furniture supplier, OKHA, provided bespoke South African-designed and manufactured pieces for the residence. Their additions included soft, naturally inspired colours with the use of varying materials and textures such as raw offcuts of timber and soft, chunky rugs which have been used to add depth and resonate an effortless, feminine sense of luxury. Bold and discreet lighting was layered to evoke contrasting but complementary moods. Subtle lighting was incorporated in all recesses and the bulkheads are featured to give a warm glow to peripheral edges. When viewed from the front in the evenings, the façade of this Roca Llisa house is a beautifully lit architectural piece. Poolside cycads and glimmering reflections from the swimming pool with giant interconnecting stepping stones and elegant terraced steps lend a regal air to this valuable piece of real estate that takes barefoot luxury to new levels. ugged by the sensual curves of the surrounding mountains, this estimated 3.5 acre north-facing, southern suburbs property is bathed in eternal sunshine and rests against big blue sky. Other homes are barely discernable through the thickets of green that descend towards the Constantia valley, shrouded in pockets of morning mist. This house really is above the clouds. And above all the rest.
PRIVATE AND EXCLUSIVE It’s the stuff that celebrity dreams are made of. Think of the Hollywood Hills - a perfect paparazzi hideaway, with teams of culinary chefs, doormen, masseurs, personal trainers, ground staff et al. A phone call is necessary to locate the whereabouts of other inhabitants. Such is the size. The five garages beg for a sports car collection, perhaps a Bugatti Veyron, a Lamborghini or two, maybe a McLaren? Private, exclusive and ultimately one-of-a-kind, it’s a crystal palace suspended in the sky, celebrating the achievement of its ultimate aim – to accentuate
an architectural salute to the age of modernity. Harnessing the utilitarian seamlessness and transparency of its materials – wood, concrete and glass – the stacked appearance of the house maintains a linear style, with bold vertical and ambitious horizontal lines that run across the property in massive proportions, especially when viewed from the front.
SIMPLE FEATURES Free of clutter and unnecessary elements its indoor décor is an architectural and sculptural statement all on its own, exploiting the wonderful discipline of organised minimalism. Some organic shapes have been snuck in with the use of slight curves on the sofas and coffee tables, but in all, the décor is simple, functional
and generously proportioned, remaining true to the architecture. Truth be told, smaller details would be lost within the voluminous space. So it is no surprise then that there is a focus on simpler features of interest such as the ceiling and wall insets. The dining room ceiling inset, viewed from the kitchen displays ambient lighting which at night is nothing short of spectacular when reflecting against the glass walls of the room. The odd Persian rug and artistic Kelim bring a flash of colour now and again but when indoors, it’s the sensation of the space of the great outdoors that features quite cleverly. Daytime brings the sun and the blue sky and night-time, the reflection of lights twinkling against the glass and dark sky, studded with stars.

The property reflects luxurious hospitality on a lay of the land that is simply unlike anywhere else in Cape Town; the architect has made ideal use of the gentle mountain slopes, leaving some original fauna and flora to decorate idyllic terraced gardens and grasslands. Giant naturally occurring trees along with indigenous mountain fynbos, serve as part of the protected Cape biome, one of the worlds most coveted UNESCO sites, and because the estate overlooks Table Mountain National Park, there’s probably more plant diversity and birdlife here than in any other residential space in Cape Town. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that you live next door to neighbours, such is the lush green of the surrounding canopy and the convenience that best of the southern ‘burbs’ has to offer. SV

eautiful kitchen, beautiful food. Now imagine a space so cleverly designed that its practical layout anticipates your every move in a nifty four step tango around its clever components.
ORDER OF THE DAY Made-to-measure wall units with a sliding front are unostentatious and sleek, as is everything else in this modular, modern kitchen. Gone are the heavy folds and flaps of yesteryear as we say hello to innovative storage solutions all in one easy space. Cupboards are contemporary and innovative; above the oven, ‘oven housing’, and to the left and right, ‘larder housing’. These swish spaces are larger than they seem; the ‘larder housing’ idea offers up to two weeks of grocery storage for a family of four beneath its glossy veneer. The bin unit is undiscernible and seamlessly tucked away beneath the sink. Its foot operated mechanism is hands free, with a metal protection sheet at the bottom, and of course above all else, it’s really easy on the eye for practical and odourless waste disposal. Aptly named a ‘jumbo line’, the bespoke pull-out solution stack of drawers is discreet in configuration and ergonomically and cleverly placed. They’re made to measure to perfection, within the nearest millimetre, keeping your utensils and tableware within easy reach of each other. Drawers are soft-closing and contain non-slip mats with full extension runners as a standard feature. Say goodbye to backache and

rummaging about for kitchen items. Drawers can be designed to avoid having to bend down and goods that were once the domain of shelving only are now easily stackable and quickly identifiable in drawers. With all the characteristics of the future of kitchens to come in the next few years – a decreased use of wood and the stylish use of monochrome colour clean white works together with interchangeable accents of blue. This layered effect offers visual relief with the interesting layers of colour. Truly reflective of multi-tasking lifestyles, shelving at the gondola end of the island is both functional and informal adding life and character with a collection of cookbooks and personal effects. And of course, social interaction and dining together with the chef is the order of the day in this easy space.
SOMETHING EVOCATIVE Innovation and design play such a major part in home improvement in the kitchen. Ian Buck, CEO of Schmidt South Africa, says “Our designers use state of the art software that can design, price and order your dream kitchen in one go so that you can actually see what’s being composed before its installed.” Visualising the final effect of a new kitchen is vital, especially when playing with a host of endless designs, styles and colour. Wood lends a classic country house appeal that’s warm, charming and sophisticated all at once and paint choices and effects are plentiful. Soft lime green and buttery yellow work citrusy magic with wooden cabinetry. An overhanging ‘chimney flue’ design that contains the oven hob, wide flagstone tiles and ornate metalwork in the handles of the cabinetry are all redolent of great old British manor houses, where kitchens provide warmth and comfort with a hearth or an Aga and oodles
of tea, chunky cakes and cream scones in the late afternoons. Final flourishes include open shelves with wicker baskets and space to display antiques and collectables. The kitchen island is still ever practical, accessible from all four sides. Its charm is that it offers space away from the main preparation area of the kitchen. Ideal for children, it’s in safe proximity from the stove and great when you want all hands on deck. In all, this particular look won’t date and is hearty and approachable, blending well with the look of most properties. It’ll easily tolerate décor updates and the different variations of this design mean you can have something special, designed just for you. SV

WELLNESS MOTIVATION
AN APP A DAY… If you feel like you need a personal assistant to get yourself in order and keep the chaos at bay, you’ll be happy to know there are a number of apps especially designed to make life a little easier. JENNIFER CAMPBELL
F
rom tracking fitness, to list-making, nutrition and mindfulness, there really is an app for everything these days. But, how do you choose which ones to use, and what exactly can they offer? We’ve rounded up our top picks – they may just help you live a healthier, more balanced life.
1. GET FIT The Couch to 5K app is perfect if you’re eager to up your daily activity, but really have no idea where to begin. It’s an eight-week programme that gives you three workouts a week – it starts with alternating between running and walking, and the idea is that by the end of the programme you will be able to run five kilometres at a comfortable pace, even if you have never jogged before.
2. MAKE BETTER FOOD CHOICES If you want to eat a balanced diet, but tend to go off the rails halfway through the week, Lifesum could be the little helper you need. It offers reminders to help you drink enough water every day, gives you feedback on the foods you are eating, and provides an overview of your nutrition and exercise habits so that you can improve them with time. You can also track your weight and exercise routine, and set a variety of lifestyle goals.
3. LOOK AFTER YOUR HAPPINESS The Happify app takes care of your emotional health by offering a wide range of tracks for you to listen to – from conquering negative thoughts, to dealing with relationship problems, managing stress, overcoming anxiety and finding more time for yourself. Each track is based on recent scientific research, and provides practical activities, games, meditations and assessments, depending on what you are looking for.
4. TRY ONLINE THERAPY If something is bugging you, but you’re not quite ready to open up to your friends, family or partner, online therapy may help. 7 Cups offers anonymous support and counseling from trained listeners, so you can text chat oneon-one with a licensed therapist any time. The app also includes mindfulness exercises, a wellness test, mood-boosting activities, videos and community forums.
5. SLEEP BETTER Sleep Cycle is an alarm clock that tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you only when you are sleeping lightly – this ensures that you feel like you are waking up naturally, rather than being

woken suddenly from a deep sleep. The app works by tracking movement in your bed, and in doing so identifies which sleep phase you are in. By monitoring your body’s signals, it wakes you in the lightest possible sleep state, so you feel rested when you wake up.
6. MANAGE YOUR FAMILY’S SCHEDULE If you struggle to keep track of meetings, appointments, school events and an ever-growing to do list, try Cozi. It’s an organisation app designed to simplify family life with the use of a colour-coded calendar feature – you can input everyone’s schedule on a shared account and set reminders for special appointments or events like sports practice or a trip to the doctor. There are also shopping and to-do lists, a recipe box, and a family journal where you can add and share photos.
8. TRY A NEW DISH There are loads of recipe apps out there, but the best part about SideChef is that it offers step-bystep photos and responds to voice commands for hands-free cooking. The idea is to make cooking accessible and fun, so even beginners can enjoy trying new recipes. There are over a thousand recipes on offer and you can browse by ingredient, diet or cuisine type, as well as upload photos to your own food journal.
9. ORGANISE YOUR FINANCES Dealing with a monthly budget can be a little mundane, but Goodbudget is a user-friendly option that allows you to track your expenses and monitor your cash flow. You can generate reports to analyse your spending habits and sync across devices if you share a budget with other members of your household. SV
7. TAKE TIME OUT TO MEDITATE Headspace offers guided meditation to help reduce stress and practice mindfulness. It starts off with a free introductory series of ten sessions of ten minutes each designed to teach the basics of meditation, after which you can choose to continue and access a range of meditations from two to sixty minutes long.

WELLNESS HEART AWARENESS
A
s spring approaches we look at ways to hit ‘refresh’ on our health habits, and speak to a Cape Town local who underwent a traumatic heart surgery and lived to tell his inspiring story.
DON'T STOP MOVING We need to exercise to keep our bodies in shape, and our hearts are no different. Any activity is better than none, be it dancing, swimming, gardening or playing with the kids, moving should be a way of life rather than a chore. Walking every day is the ideal way to keep your heart strong -- try to fit in a brisk half hour walk every day. You don't have to walk for kilometres, just make sure that you walk fast enough to breathe
harder than normal and your body temperature increases, but that you can still hold a conversation. If you battle to stay motivated, ask a friend or partner to join you, or join an exercise group.
MAKE YOUR WORKSPACE A HEALTHY SPACE We spend so much of our time at work, but even so it can be easy to ignore the importance of implementing good daily habits and creating a healthy environment. Most importantly, keep your office a smoke-free zone. Try to incorporate activity into your workday by going for a walk at lunchtime, standing up every half hour or so, and stretching from time to time. Manage stress by taking regular breaks and chatting to colleagues. When it comes to lunch, pack a meal that’s healthy and filling so that you’re not tempted to give in to the mid-afternoon slump by indulging in sugary treats and excessive caffeine.
EAT CLEAN With busy schedules healthy eating may feel easier said than done, but heart-healthy nutrition is actually quite simple. The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa recommends eating a variety of foods, so that your plate looks colourful at every meal. Include fibre and good fats but eat fewer foods with added salt, sugars and unhealthy fats. The best foods for a strong heart? Try pilchards, avocado, walnuts, flaxseed, olive oil, oats, beans, dairy and plenty of fresh veggies and fruit.
GET STRESS UNDER CONTROL It's natural to feel anxious from time to time, but learning to manage stress is crucial when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. The Heart and Stroke

Foundation South Africa warns that stress -- be it from work pressures, family issues or financial burdens -- can increase the risk for heart disease. Learn to say "no" if you feel like you can't cope with all of your commitments, be sure to set aside time for relaxation, and try to adopt healthy habits in your free time. Also, don't be afraid to seek professional help -- a therapist can be very helpful when it comes to dealing with issues that cause severe stress. SV
REAL-LIFE STORY In 2014, Lloyd Jacobs experienced a raised heart rate while he was trying to sleep. The hospital said it was likely a result of anxiety so he went home with some pain medication to rest. The next evening, his heartbeat was raised again, along with blood in his cough. Upon seeing a cardiologist and having an echocardiogram, Lloyd was told that he had a severely regurgitated mitral valve (a valve in the heart) and would require surgery. After several consultations and tests, it was decided that his mitral valve would be replaced with a mechanical St Jude’s Valve. At this point no cause of the condition was found. His valve was hanging on by a thread and blood was hardly being pumped through his heart. After surgery, followed by three weeks in ICU, strong sedatives and physiotherapy, Lloyd was sent home to recover. “This was an exceptionally frustrating time
for me as the pain was intense and I was not self-reliant,” says Lloyd. “With hard work and rehabilitation I finally got moving and started walking with accompaniment.” Thanks to his very supportive employer, a wellness counselor visited Lloyd at home. “The support from family, friends, running friends, the Cross fit community, and random acquaintances from all aspects of my life was outstanding, it is still emotionally overwhelming,” he says. After months of recovery, Lloyd went back to work, slowly started walking, and then eventually began running. “Being able to accomplish running was very emotional for me. I sat in the car for a good cry after managing 3km around the Rondebosch Common!” he says. After that he added hiking and rowing to his regime, and was eventually fit and strong enough to complete the Two Ocean’s Marathon, an achievement he is immensely proud of. Today, his life is back to normal apart from some lifestyle changes and the click of his prosthetic valve, which clicks on every heartbeat!

WINE FOR THOUGHT A Méthode Cap Classique, A Pinot Noir, and a Chenin Blanc to put a spring in our step. BY EMILE JOUBERT
I
f you subscribe to convention and require a reason to pop a bottle of sparkling wine, then the advent of spring should surely do. For me, however, wine of the fizzy, bubbly type is something I can drink any day of the year as well as at any time. A life-affirming freshness and the crisp edge makes bubbly a true any-time wine to be sipped free from the shackles of convention.
South African Cap Classique industry has boomed. Over a hundred different brands of Cap Classiques are found on the market, the consumers love it and the prices are laughably modest when compared to the French stuff. And all-round quality is great, one of South Africa’s strongest wine categories for sure.
Champagne is, of course, the King, Queen and King’s Mother of all sparkling wines. Besides the great names such as Dom Pérignon, Bollinger, Moët and Veuve Clicquot, the wines fame lies in its origins in the Champagne region of France. Anything not made in ‘Champagne’ is simply not Champagne, and the regional trademark is protected by the French with a Gallic fierceness that would make Napoleon proud. Down here in South Africa a number of brilliant sparkling wines are made in the same manner as which the Champagnes are crafted. This means the gazillion tiny bubbles found in each glass are the result of a natural fermentation process undergone in the bottle. We call it Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), and since the legendary Frans Malan made the first wine of this kind at Simonsig in 1971, the
There might be many Cap Classiques to choose from, but one that has grabbed my attention recently is the Brut Rosé Non-Vintage from Stellenbosch-based producer Kleine Zalze. The guys and girls at Klein Zalze have an extensive range of wines and never seem to put a foot wrong, with this gorgeous sparkling wine being another example. Kleine Zalze’s Brut Rosé is made from Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (40%), which along with Pinot Meunier are the classic Champagne grape varieties. Once poured and the mousse has

subsided, the glass holds a salmon-coloured hue with tiny reams of bubbles streaming to the surface. The nose is floral and summery, and in the mouth you experience a burst of red berries, a run of citrus and a hint of freshly baked bread – the result of the process of bottle-fermentation. This Cap Classique is given an individual character by the edge of fruit-sweetness backed by the riveting alertness of a fine sparkling wine. If you need a spring in your step, this’ll do. Just mentioning Pinot Noir makes me want to grab a bottle, especially one of the wines made in a lighter, summery style. Pinot Noir comes with all sorts of talk of mystery and regal pedigree and drama that makes one feel you need to don a dark suit just to look at a bottle. Truth be told, it is a real fun wine to drink due to the relaxed tannins and its alertness on the palate. Newton Johnson from Hemel-enAarde out Hermanus way are iconic Pinot producers. In their range of site-specific, terroir-motivated wines there is a cute Felicité Pinot Noir made for the only kind of drinking I like, which is every day. The bulk of the grapes for the Felicité Pinot Noir 2015 are sourced from Eilandia out Robertson way, with a dollop of Hemel-en-Aarde fruit to fillout the profile. The Robertson origins and the fact that the wine was matured in older barrels allow the price to be half that of what you’d expect to pay for your average Pinot Noir, whilst over-delivering in terms of quality. Silky tannins lead to delicious notes of ripe strawberry and sour cherry, complemented by that haunting spiciness and slight
mushroom character for which Pinot Noir is known. I don’t know what all those serious Pinot Noir disciples think of this, but this truly is a bottoms-up bottle of wine. Slightly chilled and enjoyed with a spot of braaied fish or a spicy Oriental dish, your enjoyment of Felicité will know no bounds. This is also the time of year when the white wines from the 2016 barrels begin to hit their straps. It was a horribly hot, dry and windy year, yet nature held firm in delivering a crop of whites that have exceeded expectations in terms of balance and structure. For Chenin Blanc, look no further than the Breedekloof Valley, out Rawsonville way. This is the traditional homeland for this variety and the range of fine Chenins is astounding. Mia Chenin Blanc 2016, made at Stofberg Family Vineyards, is a terrific example of what is on offer and is worth stocking up on by the case-full for summer. The Breedekloof is known as a slow-ripening area with cool nights off-setting the warm days. The Chenin Blanc grapes gain a lot of complexity in these conditions allowing winemakers to keep the process of turning juice to wine simple and practically noninterventionist. The Mia Chenin is unwooded, fresh as a daisy and pure as one of the Breedekloof’s gushing mountain streams. Notes of pear and apple jump out of the glass, with that wonderful stony, mineral grip on the palate for which good Chenin is known. Pure as driven snow, right in the middle of spring. SV

riving through the leafy suburb of Newlands, you'd be forgiven for missing the Vineyard Hotel. Hidden from the main road, you may never guess that behind the walls exists a luxury hotel set on a gorgeous 7-acre riverside garden estate. But, if you have the pleasure of making your way inside, you’ll soon be swept up by the charm and history of the establishment. Originally a country cottage built by the famous Lady Anne Barnard in 1799, the hotel has expanded over the years and now boasts 207 comfortable rooms. The original house remains though, as does the garden, which is home to a diverse range of plant life, birds and even some resident tortoises. Although the additions are modern and chic, the history stands strong in its features and surroundings – some of the older finishes remain, and Lady Anne Barnard’s sketches and journal entries decorate the walls. In recent years, General Manager Roy Davies has re-established a small vineyard on the property – a nod to the estate’s history as one of the first vineyards in the area, as well as an opportunity to share his passion for wine with guests.
about the unique space. For children, there are a range of outdoor activities like treasure hunts in search of the resident tortoises, and other supervised games. If the weather is rainy, take a look at the two art galleries on-site, and pay a visit to the library – a phone and laptop-free zone especially designed for peace and quiet.
SLEEP Whether you opt for a standard room, a suite or a cottage, you’ll be treated to classic, muted décor, gorgeous views of the gardens, vineyard or mountain, and en-suite bathrooms. Some of the rooms boast a separate lounge and living area, and private sundecks or balconies from which you can soak up the tranquil setting.

They also have a number of rooms designed for couple’s treatments – an ideal way to spend a lazy afternoon! For the more energetic, the health and fitness centre on the estate is located in the pool pavilion and offers all the facilities you need for a good workout. There is also a team of personal trainers available on request, if you feel like some personal attention. For outdoor jogging, there are two routes (a 3km and a 5km option), which stretch from the hotel and through the scenic surrounds of Newlands.
the dish. The flavour combinations are intense and unique and range widely in style – for starters, for example, you may choose teriyaki cured ostrich carpaccio with coriander and mint salad and preserved ginger, or opt instead for a grilled polenta cake with wild mushroom and tofu sauté, pickled baby carrots and a cucumber spaghetti salad. For another course, there’s a choice of salmon trout or beef fillet, and the desserts are decadent – think chocolate cremeux with black sesame crumble and mulberry and rose geranium sorbet, or lemon and thyme cake with passion fruit ice cream and cashew butter. Our advice? Go with a partner or friend so that you can taste a bit of everything! For a more informal setting, the Garden Lounge offers light meals and teas and looks over the beautiful grounds. There’s also Long Café, a coffee shop that serves coffee freshly ground and blended on site, as well as a selection of cakes and pastries. In summer, Splash Café serves cocktails around the pool, while Myoga is an independently-owned restaurant that boasts innovative ‘wow’ factor’ dishes and a range of superb local wines. SV
EAT When it comes to food, there’s no shortage of choice at The Vineyard Hotel. The Square serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers fare that is seasonal and contemporary. Possibly the best way to taste chef Carl van Rooyen’s range of flavours is to indulge in the five course wine pairing dinner. Each course has two options, and comes with a wine to complement

s the tree-lined avenues become green again and the sun begins to shine a bit brighter, the charming town of Stellenbosch awakens from its slumber and throws open its doors to glorious weather and all it brings with it. Now is the perfect time to explore Stellenbosch’s historical sites, art galleries, botanical gardens, and, of course, its many, many wine farms. Join us for a jam-packed day trip in this superb town of the Western Cape.
START THE DAY OFF IN STYLE Breakfast is an important meal of the day, and it’s just as important to make sure you find your way to a well-established restaurant…and if that includes bubbles we’re on the right track. Champagne breakfasts are trending, especially in this region, and we suggest you consider the Avontuur Restaurant on their estate, as well as at the famed House of J.C. Le Roux. Both options have their own Méthode Cap Classique waiting on request. The list of good restaurant spots in the area are endless but a few more to mention include Tokara Delicatessen (with a sexy range of their own musthave olive oil), or the new Idiom Restaurant on the outskirts of Sir Lowry’s Pass. perspective, whilst sitting amongst the trendy and hip locals, you should consider the Wijnhuis Restaurant, and the Oude Werf Hotel with their new chef, have a few dishes that have us calling for more. Breakfast or lunch, these are all great options.
EXPLORE THE HERITAGE The town centre of Stellenbosch is a historical and cultural medley with its 300-year-old Dutch, Victorian and Georgian architecture dominating the outward appearance and the many contemporary and eclectic art galleries housed within. As you walk the pretty streets pay attention to the monuments that pay tribute to the second oldest South African towns rich history. Make your way to Dorp Street, which is itself a National Monument and is filled with some of the oldest, beautiful buildings in the country. The Village Museum offers insight into the towns history and transports you back in time to those very first days and the subsequent development of the town and its people. Other museums worth a visit include the Oude Meester Brandy Museum; The Burgerhuis; Wijnland Auto Museum; The Toy & Miniature Museum; and Oom Samie se Winkel.

ARTS AND CRAFTS Church Street is a must for art enthusiasts. Art galleries and artisan laid-back professionals are housed here. For an eclectic mix of contemporary art pop into the SMAC museum. If you’re in to sculptures make sure you visit the Vincent Da Silva Gallery, or if you prefer more traditional pieces’ pop into the Johan Coetzee Gallery on Plein Street. Many more galleries house a combination of internationally renowned local artists and extremely talented young up-and-comings. It’s also a one-stop-shop destination for diamonds. Explore how the old is buffed and polished to the new at the Diamond Works. The Sparking Tour takes you through the delicate process of cutting these ancient stones into glittering rocks we so love, and you’ll enjoy the complimentary glass of bubbles as you learn of the history of the diamond and gold trade in South Africa.
CALLING ALL WINE LOVERS Foodies and vino-lovers both should take advantage of an artisanal cupcake and wine pairing at Delheim

estate. The truly unique flavours (think lemon infused rooibos cupcakes and pumpkin cinnamon cupcakes) are paired perfectly with Delheim's award-winning wines. A stop at the Brenaissance Wine Farm is a must with a wine and pizza pairing (yes, there is such a thing!) which will see you through combinations of a biltong and fig pizza along with a full-bodied Bordeaux blend. If you’re more of a beer drinker, worry not! Stellenbrau creates an array of delicious craft beers from Weiss to Lager and everything in between, all of which is available for a beer-tasting afternoon. Soak in breathtaking mountain and valley views while sipping on refreshing white or complex red wines at the Ernie Else wine estate. The picturesque setting and relaxed atmosphere makes it the ideal place to end off the day. A few more top-notch wine-pairings and tastings to consider include Neethlingshof, Lourensford (and includes chocolate…), a unique salt and wine pairing at Fleur Du Cap, and a pancake and wine pairing at the Uitkyk Wine Estate. fascinating fusion of east and west, a trip to Turkey promises gorgeous scenery, vibrant cities, ancient monuments, and beautiful beaches. Whether you’re looking for historical sites, world-class shopping, exotic cuisine, or just want to soak up the flavour of this captivating place, you won’t be disappointed.
FOR THE CULTURE VULTURE For a taste of Turkey's rich cultural offering, make sure you visit its biggest and most bustling cities. Modern Ankara boasts a lively art and museum scene, while Istanbul is the country's largest city with a dazzling sprawl of gorgeous architecture. In the capital city, you’ll find some of the country’s most well known sights from the Hagia Sophia Museum, to the famous Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Dolmabahçe and Topkapi Palaces and Süleymaniye Mosque. For the history buff, a trip further afield to Aspendos is well worth it – some of the country’s best preserved ancient ruins can be found here, while Bodrum in the southwest is home to Bodrum Castle, a monument that dates back to medieval times. On the west coast, the ruins of Ephesus draw loads of tourists every year, and for good reason – the buildings were reconstructed in the 1970s from their original parts.
FOR THE FOODIE While each region offers its own slightly different flavours, one must-try is a traditional Turkish breakfast – think fresh bread, cheeses, olives, a dried beef sausage spiced with red pepper and cumin known as sucuk, and börek, sheets of baked dough filled with mince or vegetables and cheese all served with sliced tomato and cucumber, as well as tea. Another tasty option is the Turkish omelette, or menemen – it's typically made with peppers, onions and herbs. No trip through Turkey is complete without enjoying a meze platter or three. Don't miss the local chili tomato paste, grilled aubergines and yoghurt, pinto beans and artichokes. For something different, try künefe, a traditional cheese pastry, or kadayif, a simple dough dish baked and soaked in syrup. Manti is often compared to ravioli, and is made from dough and fillings of ground meat and onions. Spicy kebabs, slow-cooked lamb and fresh fish are specialties, and if you're looking for a sweet treat try freshly baked baklava, kaymakli kayisi – dried apricots cooked in a sugar syrup, stuffed with buffalo milk and rolled in ground pistachios – or the ubiquitous stretchy ice cream known as salep dondurma. Take your time strolling through markets to discover new flavours, and if you can, try and sign up for a cooking class in Instanbul, Kalkan or Bodrum.

TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL View of Pidgeon Valley, Cappadocia
An excursion tour on Dalyan river valley
FOR THE CHILLED-OUT TRAVELLER If sun, sea and sand sounds like your idea of the ideal holiday, Turkey's picturesque Turquoise Coast is a must. The small resort town of Dalyan is situated on a pretty river, while Patara boasts Turkey's longest beach. For a bit of adventure, visit Kaş for diving, kayaking, or hiking the beautiful Lycian Way – a scenic trail along the coast. If hanging out in a laid back village is more your style, make your way to Cirali for its relaxed, secluded beach (which happens to be within walking distance of ancient ruins) or visit Antalya for its gorgeous beaches, historic centre and vibrant nightlife. Further west, you'll find the breathtakingly beautiful Cappadocia – the landscape there is made up of strange rock formations and striking valleys. Spend your days strolling through the historical towns, or indulge in a hot air balloon ride to really take in the view. Also perfect for relaxing, the small town of Oludeniz on the coast of the Aegean Sea is set on the
edge of turquoise blue lagoon, and is famous for its clear waters and gorgeous beach.
FOR THE LUXURY LOVER For travellers who like the finer things, Turkey has an abundance of options from cruising on a yacht on the Mediterranean coast, to indulging in a Turkish bath or hammam – a process that starts with relaxing in a heated room, and includes a full body wash, scrub and massage. The public hammam is still a part of Turkish culture, but if you prefer your privacy there are a number of spas that offer a similar service. Pamukkale in the southwest is home to natural hot springs situated on top of limestone terraces – the region is known as Cotton Castle and boasts a truly spectacular landscape. If you want to do a spot of shopping while you travel (and who doesn’t?) take your pick from the abundance of open-air markets, bazaars and boutiques scattered throughout the country. traditional Turkish carpets and rugs, Ottoman prints and books embellished with dust from gems and gold, red and cobalt blue pottery and ceramics, Turkish textiles and copper. Locally made Turkish Delight is a must, and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to spices, dried fruits and snacks made from nuts.
FOR THE ADVENTURER With its diverse landscape and countless sights, you’re unlikely to be bored with any route through Turkey. If, however, you feel like getting off the beaten
track in favour of some less mainstream spots, why not explore the Firtina Valley in the Rize province? It’s a lush, green area far from the resorts of more visited regions, and the locals here still live a rural existence. Similarly peaceful is the scenic Inözü Valley – its vast open spaces, small villages and ancient ruins can easily keep you busy for days and the region is ideal for bird watching and hiking. If you have a taste for small towns, visit Amasya in the north, a scenic village set next to a river and a backdrop of rocky mountains, or Uzungöl, a unique and pretty village on the edge of a picture-perfect lake. T
rail running is one of the hottest new pastimes in the Southern Suburbs— with more and more former treadmill and road runners, not to mention new enthusiasts, hitting the city’s greenbelts to get their exercise fix. If you’re looking to add something new to your exercise program—or if you feel stuck in a rut with your current regime—here are five reasons why you should give trail running a go.
1
IT’S EASY TO GET INTO
If you’re new to running, there’s something infinitely more appealing about heading out on a trail than simply pounding the concrete around your neighbourhood. Trail running is safer for a number of reasons (not least of all traffic), plus it adds a sense of adventure to what might otherwise be a mundane, functional activity. In recent years, a large number of treadmill users have converted to trail running for precisely this reason: it is easier to incentivise yourself to go running when the run is about more than simply the physical motion of your legs.
2
THERE’S LESS IMPACT ON YOUR BODY
Trail running is also great for people recovering from injuries, or for those who have been warned off road running because of issues with their joints or muscles. Trail running surfaces (mud, grass, compacted sand, etc.) are much softer than asphalt, and—because the surfaces are also less even—they encourage runners to land with more pressure on their forefoot than their heel. This distributes the impact force throughout more of the foot and the lower leg, leading to fewer injuries and greater strength building. Many trail runners also report of improved balance and better core strength since making the switch.
3
4
TRAIL RUNNING SPORT
THERE’S ALWAYS A NEW CHALLENGE ON THE HORIZON
What’s fantastic about trail running is that, unlike road running—where your ‘progress’ as a runner is usually measured by external, impersonal things like distance covered and time taken—you can develop as a trail runner in a number of different ways. Of course, you can simply run increasingly longer trails to build your fitness and lung capacity, but there are other interesting variations you might want to try, such as ‘Steep Course’ training, which is good for building muscle strength in your lower legs, and ‘Mixed Terrain’ running, where you cover a number of different surfaces in one run. Trail running is also an excellent reason for a weekend away, exploring new routes and testing yourself in new environments.
5
WORLD-CLASS SPOTS RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP
Cape Town has an amazing array of topquality trail running spots. Whether you are a beginner who is enticed by the idea of exercising in nature, or whether you are a hardcore runner who has grown bored of the scene at the gym, you are guaranteed to find a trail around the Mother City to suit your needs. The Constantia Greenbelt is home to many of the city’s most beautiful trails, with several routes of varying difficulty. Start with the Alphen Trail, a 7km route that winds through deep forest in the shadow of Table Mountain. The Lion’s Head Circuit (5.3km) is also extremely popular at any time of day for its long, raking views over Camps Bay—and, for the very fit, the Chapman’s Peak Contour Path (9.5km) in Hout Bay provides a real challenge as it climbs and crosses Blackburn Ravine. SV
IT’S PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY
Most people enjoy exercising after work because it helps them to ‘clear their minds’ after a busy day at the office. However, combining this physical activity with an experience of the outdoors can considerably increase this mental relief. Clinical psychologists have shown that, notwithstanding the endorphins released by exercise, simply being in nature can trigger chemicals in your brain that lead to feelings of rejuvenation and refreshment. If you are a long-time road runner who has begun to feel only tired—and not uplifted—after running, perhaps you should see if a change to trail running will make the difference.

ltra-marathon trail running champion Ryan Sandes is passionate about his sport of choice. Although he has a number of first places under his belt, including all four of the Four Desert Series races, some of the world’s most prestigious outdoor footraces in the world, and the Leadville 100 Miler in the Colorado Rockies, his fondest memory is winning the K9 Search and Rescue Doggie Race with his dog Thandi. “We have shared many moments on the trails together and looking back now it was really special to run a race with her,” he says. For him, there is more to running than races and results: “It is not about winning or getting finisher medals, but rather about the experiences that I have along the way,” he says. We asked Ryan about his running career, how he spends his free time and what inspires him to keep moving. What do you love most about trail running? It has enabled me to travel the world and see some incredible places. It gives me a sense of freedom and it is an escape from reality. Running on a trail allows me just to focus on the present and nothing else. Do you have any personal favourites when it comes to trail running routes? I live on the back slopes of Table Mountain so any trail up there is rad! Currently Kloof Nek
Corner ridge is my favourite trail. What motivates you to run regularly? I love what I do so it is easy to motivate myself. Trail running is my passion and a part of my lifestyle and I don't see myself doing anything else. No two trail runs are ever the same and I love the unpredictability of the trails. Do you have any tips for people interested in trying trail running for the first time? It’s important to have fun and enjoy yourself. It is a lot harder to run on trails as opposed to the road so don't feel bad if you do lots of walking on the trails. Always take some cold weather gear and nutrition if you are going into the mountains as anything can happen up there. Most importantly enjoy the epic scenery. What do you do when you are not running? I am a fairly chilled out person and enjoy spending time on the beach with my friends and family. I enjoy the outdoors and spend my free time doing activities like hiking, mountain biking and surfing. You won't find me in a shopping mall but I do love chocolate and coffee. My wife Vanessa and I are creatures of habit so you will find us regularly eating dinner at Raggafellows or having breakfast at La Cuccina as both restaurants are in Hout Bay where we live. SV

IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST The R8 mimics a race car. It screams to be taken to the track. When you open the doors you’ll expect to see rugged bucket seats, a roll cage, raw metal pedals and a stick shift with no casing around it. The same luxury trimmings you find in the S8 and other top of the range Audi’s has been neatly packed into this 2 seater. The low mounted sport seats have integrated head restraints for support, and the seats are full leather with signature diamond quilted stitching on it. The V10 Plus model comes with
lightweight bucket seats (this is also an option in the V10). The instrument cluster is neatly packed in behind the steering wheel. Right next door is the turbine-shaped controls for the air conditioner which floats effortlessly above the gears. Both the V10 and the V10 Plus come standard with an impressive state of the art Bang & Olufsen sound system.
FOR THE THRILL SEEKER It’s one thing to look the part, and another thing to play the part. The V10 model packs an impressive punch with an engine that kicks out 397kW with a maximum 540Nm torque. The V10 Plus model is slightly more powerful with a 449 kW and 560Nm torque. The V10 reaches a top speed of 320km/h and reached the 100km/h mark in 3.5 seconds flat. The V10 Plus claims bragging rights and reaches 0 – 100km/h in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 330km/h.
TAKE IT HOME The R8 will make a substantial dent in your pocket, however 100% worth it. The V10 quattro S tronic comes in at a cool R 2 735 500 and the V10 Plus quattro S tronic at R3 089 000. This range comes standard with a 5 year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan. SV

JAGUAR CARS
EXPECT THE BEST When you think of a Jaguar, you think of sophisticated elegance. Couple the elegance with spoton engineering and you’ll find a winning combination. Jaguar makes cars you want to own. Sedans. Coupés. Convertibles. Now take the elegance and engineering and place it in a SUV. Consider it done! The F-PACE has shattered the mould and has claimed a spot on its own.
THE BIGGER THE BETTER Jaguar stays true to its roots. Small tell-tale details from other models in the stable have made its lasting impression on the F-Pace. The slim LED headlights with narrow taillights from the F-Type features here too. The cabin greets you with full leather seats, and fine line trimmings on the dash and door panels. The InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and the 12.3 inch HD virtual instrument cluster is top of the range and extremely user friendly. All the bells and whistles you’re
used to with any other Jaguar model is somehow elevated in this setting. The difference is quite distinctive. This is an SUV. Not a mini-SUV, a full-on SUV. You’re in for a real treat with a ground clearance of .213m and 22inch wheels.
TAKE NO PRISONERS From a performance perspective you’ll be faced with 132kW in the 2.0l Diesel which is more than enough to get the job done. Take a step forward though and climb behind the wheel of the 3.0l Supercharged Petrol First Edition and you’ll be catapulted to an exciting 280kW under the hood. A maximum speed for the First Edition is set at 250km/h and is reached in an impressive 5.5 seconds.
LET’S TALK MONEY The Jaguar F-Pace has hit the nail on the head with its prices. The entry level 2.0l I4D Pure will set you back a cool R766 800.00 (incl. VAT / ex. CO2 Tax) and the top of the range 3.0l S/C Petrol First Edition comes in at R1 321 000.00 (incl. VAT / ex. CO2 Tax). SV
