IT’S NOT JUST THE AMAROK HAULING A TRAILER.
The Amarok. Not just tough, smart. On the outside, you’ll see the Amarok towing the heaviest loads without breaking a sweat. But what you don’t see is the 3.0 V6 TDI engine with 550Nm of torque and 165kW of power, that enables a towing capacity of up to 3.3 tons. You don’t see the ESP, 4MOTION®, or unique off-road ABS that ensure a smooth and stabilised drive whilst working on the toughest terrain. You see tough, but you don’t see the intelligent under-the-skin German technology that makes tough possible.
Range includes: 103kW TDI Comfortline 4x2 and 4MOTION® manual; 132kW BiTDI Highline 4x2 and 4MOTION®, manual and automatic; 132kW BiTDI Highline Plus 4x2 and 4MOTION® automatic; 132kW BiTDI Extreme 4MOTION® automatic; 165kW V6 TDI 4MOTION® automatic available in Highline, Highline Plus and Extreme.

Now this one has by far been one of my most favourite editions to put forward to you all. Tried and tested new restaurants, the revamp of La Colombe on Silvermist Wine Estate, an array of exciting events to attend in the next few months and inspiring new décor trends to set your eyes on. Winter is behind us, let’s get out and stretch our legs and embrace the beauty that’s to come, be active and live your best life. To accompany the festivities be sure to look at Emile Joubert’s favourite wine selection for this season. On another note, as we head into the warmer months, please remember to continue to save water. Visit the City of Cape Town website on www.capetown.gov.za to keep up to date with news and water saving tips. Email me at lauren@southernvines.co.za to get in contact; I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with the community thus far, and love to hear your news and suggestions.

ART
With a love for our continent’s people and landscapes, three artists create work that reflects the diversity of our environment. Each with a distinct style, Alex Marmarellis, Lesley Charnock, and Grace Kotze, all produce pieces that are inspired by everyday South African scenes.
ALEX MARMARELLIS Born in Cape Town, Alex Marmarellis studied Graphic Design, Fine Art, and Sculpture at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, as well as Graphic Design and Art Direction at the AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town. While he has worked in a wide range of professions, from carpentry to furniture design and marketing, Alex returned to his love of art in 2010 when he began painting again. With a passion for photography, Alex often produces work from his own reference material. In fact, he carries his camera with him at all times and is always on the lookout for fresh inspiration. Alex creates pieces inspired by his environment and the people in his life — his scenes of Camp’s Bay Beach, for example, are realistic impressions of one of Cape Town’s best-loved spots. Alex’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

LESLEY CHARNOCK Deeply inspired by Africa’s diversity and natural beauty, Lesley Charnock creates oil and acrylic paintings that feature distinctly local scenes and landscapes. Her work is characterised by its energy, strong tones, vibrant colours, and deep shadows. Lesley draws much of her inspiration from scenes from her travels through Africa — city streets, people at work in small towns, and dusty rural roads. Most of her work features a figure, and it is, in fact, her portraits that really reflect her ability to bring oils to life. Lesley studied Fine Art at the Cape Technikon, and oil painting at the Green Point Art Centre in Cape Town, as well as life drawing and oil painting at the Ruth Prowse School of Art. Her paintings can be found in several galleries in and around Cape Town, and when she is not creating her own work, Lesley runs workshops where she teaches sketching and painting of portraits, landscapes and still life. Lesley’s work can be found at the 5 on Hudson gallery in De Waterkant, Cape Town www.no5onhudson.com

GRACE KOTZE Grace Kotze completed a higher diploma in Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology and has been doing solo exhibitions for the last 18 years. While Grace works primarily as a painter, she also spends some of her time curating and teaching on a part-time basis. Creating art, for Grace, is about making sense of her environment and visually representing her emotions with the use of colour, tones, and images. Her work ranges from paintings of people and landscapes to foliage and still life objects. She is driven by a belief that paint and emotions can work together to transform the mundane into visually intriguing subjects. As such, her work reflects everyday scenes and objects in compelling and interesting ways. Creating mostly oil paintings, Grace has exhibited in various galleries around the country, from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, to Oudtshoorn, Piketberg, and Stellenbosch, as well as internationally in Dubai and Venice. Grace’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com SV

LA COLOMBE WHAT’S HOT
FINE DINING AT ITS FINEST Cape Town’s iconic restaurant, La Colombe, delivers unrelenting epicurean perfection BY THEA BECKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA VAN DER SPUY
L
a Colombe is a Cape Town icon – the Mount Olympus of gastronomy – where one is treated to a truly epic food experience that lasts several hours and is unrelenting in its perfection. With its formidable and far-resounding reputation and having recently reopened its doors after an extensive revamp, it’s nearly impossible to walk into La Colombe without stratospheric expectations. The fact that it has more trophies in its cabinet than Roger Federer adds to the anticipation. Locally, La Colombe consistently blows the competition out of the water, routinely appearing in Eat Out Awards’ Top 10 Restaurants list. In 2016, La Colombe was crowned the Best Restaurant in Africa by Trip Advisor and, in 2017, it was ranked 7th on Trip Advisor’s list of Top 10 Fine Dining Restaurants in the World. And so it was that we swanned into La Colombe so heavily burdened with anticipation and expectation that we barely fit through the front doors.
supremely tranquil, without a stitch of pretence. Guests throng here for the unparalleled food experience and the views, not to admire the thread count on the tablecloths, which I’m sure we would have found to be very high if we had paid attention. Instead, our focus was whipped from us by the astounding views from the restaurant. From its lofty vantage point on the steep, eucalyptus-clad slopes of Silvermist Wine Estate, guests are treated to a wraparound view of the Constantia wine valley, False Bay, and Hout Bay.
DÉCOR AND AMBIENCE There is no trickery here. No clever manipulation of light, art, or architecture to distract the senses. Rather, La Colombe’s beautiful new interior is elegant, soft, and sophisticated and the restaurant spacious and

THE MENUS AND WINE LIST La Colombe’s menu works rather simply. Guests have a choice of the Gourmand Menu, an approximate 10-course tasting menu, or the Reduced Menu, an abbreviated version of the former. Both are available as vegetarian options and can be enjoyed with or without wine pairings. On that subject, short of erecting a billboard on the N1 highway, we couldn’t more ardently recommend the wine pairing option. La Colombe has an award-winning wine list that is a loving ode to the Western Cape’s supreme wine-producing prowess. The pairing is an integral part of the experience, not only because wine is an integral part of gastronomy, in our humble opinion, but also because the team at La Colombe has done such an exceptional job of creating love matches out of food and wine. With each new course, the sommelier arrived with fresh glasses – the shapes of which were matched to the particular wines - and a new bottle of wine, which he served with a brief presentation on its origins, the varietal or blend, and its compatibility with the food before us.
FOOD EXPERIENCE A lunch or dinner at La Colombe consists of gentle wave after gentle wave of beautifully crafted and
presented dishes by supremely gifted Chef Proprietor Scot Kirton and Executive Chef James Gaag, who are equally inspired by Asian and French cuisine: Ears of baby corn roasting on a miniature barbecue filled with searing hot coals accompanying a plate of chipotle-glazed sweetbreads, seared wagyu beef slices, sweet corn, buttermilk, and coriander, served with the seductive Kaapzicht Cinsaut 2017 (Stellenbosch). A truly international bowl of naartjieglazed langoustine, pink medallions of Korean duck, and Israeli couscous swimming in a rich, fennel-infused Umami broth, served with the vivacious Jessica Saurwein “Nom” Pinot Noir 2017 (Elandskloof). La Colombe’s signature tuna dish: tender nuggets of yellowfin tuna with avocado, shitake mushrooms and sesame in an umami broth whimsically served in a tin can. This was as enormously fun to open as it was to eat and its wine pairing was the beautiful Colombardbased Patatsfontein Patatsblanc white blend 2017 (Montagu). Each dish was a cacophony of bright and healthy colours, impeccably arranged and presented in a way that delighted both the eyes and one’s inner child. For example, our meal’s ‘interlude’ or palate cleanser was served upon a wreath of fragrant leaves and flowers, which had been placed over a basket filled with dry ice. Velvety waves of carbon dioxide billowed up from within the basket, cascading down its sides to drape our entire table in a thick blanket of mist, which was immediately evocative of Table Mountain with her white tablecloth of cloud.
FINEST DINING La Colombe systematically obliterated every one of our expectations, sending us home in an elevated trance-like state of intense pleasure saturation. During the almost four hours we spent there, we mowed our way through more than 10 courses of exquisite food and traversed the entire length and breadth of the Cape winelands, from Elgin to Elandskloof. It is absolutely no wonder that La Colombe has received such acclaim from both local and international visitors and why it has established itself as a global icon of culinary excellence. The overall experience was an epic adventure that was delivered by La Colombe’s exceptional staff with great mastery and tender love. SV

FOUR OF CAPE TOWN’S HOTTEST NEW RESTAURANTS TO SAMPLE.
Cape Town’s culinary scene is so cosmopolitan that you could eat in a different country every night and still find yourself exploring your way through the world after a month. Variety and affordability are two ways the Mother City has earned her well-deserved reputation as a food Mecca. Another is the constant addition of new and exciting eateries, which offer locals and visitors alike the opportunity to sample truly authentic fare from all over the world, right here in the shadow of Table Mountain.
RIVA RIVA is a new Italian fish restaurant located in the trendy De Waterkant village. Opened in July 2018 by Italian chefs and childhood friends, Nicoló Rovarini and Federico Rocca, guests can expect a seductive side of melodic Italian accent with their pesce del giorno. RIVA is all about beautiful, fresh Italian style seafood,
the menu of which changes weekly, served with the kind of passion and warmth that one could only expect from an authentic Italian eatery. A 24/4 Napier Street, De Waterkant, Cape Town C rivacapetown@gmail.com, 021 418 0657 W www.facebook.com/ rivacapetown

UPPER BLOEM From the exceptionally talented team who brought you La Mouette in Sea Point comes the fine-dining Upper Bloem eatery, located on Green Point’s popular restaurant strip. Together with La Mouette’s Henry Vigar, Executive chef André Hill serves up a gorgeous selection of nine sharing plates that pay homage to his childhood in the Bo Kaap and to the uniquely South African cuisine that originates from this culturally rich area. Think Cape Malay-style curries, smoked snoek, pickled fish, and other mouth-watering treats. There is a lunch opening offer special for R195 per person (6 tapas to share over 3 courses). The dinner menu is R395 per person (9 tapas to share over 3 courses). TOMO Tomo is a Japanese/Asianfusion restaurant on the corner of Shortmarket and Loop Street. The multi-talented David Yan from Dalian, China, is not only the chef-proprietor but also the brains and brawn behind the design and installation of the restaurant’s beautiful Izakaya-inspired interiors. With another chef from Japan and one from China taking their turns at the helm of the kitchen, Tomo’s menu draws inspiration from a wide variety of Asian cuisines. Its mouthwatering dishes are served at small, intimate tables in an environment that nurtures sharing and socialising. The menu also boasts a fabulous selection of traditional Chinese teas. BELEEF Located at the beginning of the commercial Huguenot Road in Franschhoek, Beleef Restaurant is a slight digression from the usual European-themed eateries the town has become so well known for. Chef Herman Steyn’s menu takes guests on a true “boerekos belewenis” (boerekos experience) with fare that is uniquely and deliciously South African, with a sophisticated and masterful twist. The food is strictly seasonal and “farm to fork” with nothing wasted, so guests can expect fresh, seasonally inspired meals made from produce that was likely growing in the ground that very morning. T
he setting for this house within Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, on the Botrivier Lagoon south-east of Cape Town, is spectacular – a slope of indigenous fynbos vegetation runs into the broad waters of a tidal estuary bordered by mountains. The considered architectural design by SAOTA and Interiors by ARRCC of this holiday house is the inherent paradox of such exposure to nature – how to shackle the extreme elements – sun, salt, rain and winds - while allowing the exceptional natural beauty of the site to pervade every space.
The entrance at the back of the building is deliberately understated; a modest canopy shelters the front door opening onto a landing from which a broad spine gently traces down the natural gradient alongside a generous garden courtyard. The corridor ends at the kitchen; the island – a solid block of granite – forms a fulcrum with the principle living areas placed at right angles, parallel with the lagoon. The kitchen looks out over open-plan dining and lounge areas towards a fireplace and picture window framed in a massive concrete hearth wall.
Occasional elements contrast raw materials with more refined details – the kitchen island - formed from rough solid blocks of granite – is highly polished on its counter.

The dining area boasts OKHA’s Bison dining table which can easily accommodate up to 10 people. The Bison’s solid oak table top forges a hand-in-glove narrative with the ceiling’s beautiful timber sidings.
Throughout the house loose furnishings selected by ARRCC, generally sourced from local manufacturer OKHA, provide a warm and luxurious counterpoint to the architecture. OKHA’s signature fine wool and bamboo silk Diamond Rug which takes its inspiration from geometry and rock formations complement the granite floors of the living room. Seating is provided by an impromptu collection of OKHA’s luxurious L-shaped Jada sofa, solid oak frame Miles armchair and Nicci armchair in an olive-green leather finish. To anchor the collection the Capri Coffee table in Volakas White marble was chosen to resonate with the geological surrounds. Occasional leather poufs add a casual flair to the layout.

The internal living wing is held between the garden courtyard and covered decks leading out to a pool which appears to blend into the lagoon beyond. The slope of the distinctive timber clad soffit was carefully calibrated to provide shelter from the prevailing wind. It extends out from the lounge to create an external living room and outdoor kitchen which are further enclosed by movable screens.
The owner’s vision for a comfortable retreat for his children coupled with liveable outdoor spaces for entertaining was developed into a “C” shaped plan whose wings serve to maximise the outlook, frame views and create a large sheltered courtyard. This distinctive sheltering shape is again expressed in the wrapped floor-wall-roof profile of the three wings which, assembled together one above the other, track the site as it slopes towards the water. The interior design by ARRCC captures the minimalist sensibility of the architecture.

Surrender to the Med’s
simple pleasures
Explore the best of the Mediterranean onboard the elegant all-suite ships of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Take up their unique offer of unlimited free shore excursions as part of an all-inclusive rate. And know that whether you’re strolling through a sleepy village shrouded in bougainvillea, or wheezily making your way up the Spanish Steps in Rome, you’ll be experiencing a cruising encounter like no other.
H
istory is inescapable when travelling in the Med. Perhaps you find yourself in Spain’s Palma de Mallorca in a pearl factory watching artisans create lustrous pearls using a closely guarded technique developed more than a century ago. There you go on a vintage train, trailing through orange and olive groves, almond and locust-bean trees, past pinecovered mountains. A few days later you are in Olbia, Sardinia buying a hand-loomed bedspread or a chest featuring designs inspired by the Nuragic culture. “There’s no place else on earth where you can cruise to as many countries within such a short period of time and sample as many experiences as you can in the Mediterranean,” believes Janine Pretorius, owner of Encore Cruises and a specialist in Regent Seven Seas Cruises for 21 years. For voyages next year, Janine recommends boarding Seven Seas Voyager on 5 April 2019 to embark on an 11-night itinerary from Barcelona to Rome. If you’ve always wanted to visit the land of miracles, Galilee, or to explore Nazareth, Seven Seas Voyager makes her

way from Rome on 16 April for a 10-night journey to Jerusalem. On 26 April, she is off for eight nights from Jerusalem to the historians’ delights in Athens, and on 4 May she travels from Athens on a 10-night sailing to the glamourous Monte Carlo. You may be keen to call on a family at their country home in Croatia’s Konavle Valley to share brandy and dried figs, or to spend time on Skadar Lake, one of Europe’s largest bird habitats in Montenegro. Seven Seas Explorer will bring you here. The ultra-luxurious ship also traverses the Med next year, departing from Barcelona (18 April) for 12 nights on her way to the ancient cobblestones and canals of Venice. On 30 April, she leaves Venice for Rome on a 10-night trip. Newest member of the fleet, Seven Seas Splendor, will bring her special brand of perfection when she embarks on her inaugural season in February 2020. She accommodates up to 750 guests in 375 suites, almost 90 of which offer a butler service. Itineraries in the Med include a Venice to Rome voyage (12 May), with a stop in Cannes during the film festival; as well as a Rome to Barcelona sailing (21 May) that visits Monte Carlo during the Monaco Grand Prix. A 10-night journey from Athens to Istanbul departs on 4 October, bringing you a taste of the many Grecian wonders you can savour, from olive oil and feta, to an al fresco seafood lunch in an ouzerie.

PROPERTY CITY BOWL Left: The back garden and pool area features weathered wooden decking and a number of mature trees and shrubs, including species of Eugenia, Nandina and Ficus, and with the beautiful old palm tree forming a special point of focus. Below left: Marianna Furman at the entrance to her home with Oliver, one of the family’s two Hungarian Pointers. The front of the house features all the typical elements of a heritage Victorian cottage, including a narrow, tiled veranda or ‘stoep’ and ornate cast-iron details in a style known in South Africa as ‘broekie-lace’.
‘W
e’ve owned this house forever,’ says Marianna Furman as she walks through her cleverly updated Victorian cottage towards the glass doors that lead onto the pool deck. ‘In other words, since the early 1990s,’ she adds, laughing. Around that time, Marianna’s husband Jarome was keeping himself very busy: not only had he recently met Marianna, he’d also bought this house – he was especially attracted to the mature trees on
the one side of the property – and was newly responsible for running his family’s business, Klooftique. An icon of the Cape Town furniture-design scene, Klooftique was started by Jarome’s father; since Jarome took over the business, Marianna has also become involved, especially on the design side. Klooftique has had the same store premises in Kloof Street for more than 40 years and is renowned all over South Africa for its clean-lined, locally designed, handmade furnishings. No surprise, then, that craftsmanship is important to the Furman’s – and that their dedication to making carefully crafted items in their business is immediately evident in their home as well. Natural textures and materials are used everywhere here: the polished slate floors in the living spaces, for example, have the kind of patina that comes only from many years of use – and special care. Leather couches and bean bags beckon invitingly and wooden tables, shelving and countertops gleam in the soft light. As architect Tamem Richa very aptly puts it, ‘I love how the character of the family shines through in the house – they are warm and colourful people, and this is evident from the minute you step inside. This is a real “home” in every sense of the word.’

AIRS & GRACES
Naturally beguiling, low-maintenance and with a myriad of species to pick from – it’s little wonder that plants are the botanical must-haves du jour, offering a modern spin on greening up your interiors… most of which are water-savvy too. TEXT MANDY ALLEN STYLING SVEN ALBERDING PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX LOCATION SHOT AT BABYLONSTOREN, WWW.BABYLONSTOREN.COM
THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT Idea Dark walls, a monochrome palette and the absence of frivolous decoration have been selectively chosen to allow the greenery to make a statement in this space. A mid-century modern coffee table and graphic rug pay homage to retro style, though the prevailing mood is clean and contemporary.

THE GATHERING Idea In a large open-plan zone, a grouping of greenery creates focus. A mix-and-match assortment of complimentary clear glass vessels extends from the table onto the floor, adding a diaphanous weightlessness to the display. Several coloured containers add vibrant highlights. The predominance of white, nude wood and organic textures also helps to extend the sense of serenity – the bonus of this industrial interior being an abundance of natural light. Unruly creeping plants set against a wall enhance the idea of the urban jungle and nature being given free rein in a man-made setting.

LIVING SCREEN Idea A personalised and inviting way to define different zones in an open-plan area is by using plants instead of solid structures. The juxtaposition of precise geometric lines (the shelving units and coffee table) with lush plants escaping their containers as well as on-trend hanging plants, imbues this modern space with a bohemian, almost mysterious, quality.

LIGHT WORK Idea Greenery creates an organic focal point in this home office environment, encouraging creativity while enhancing a sense of calm. Taking its cue from the plants, the space feels decorated but without the usual distractions of decorative objects, overtly bright colours and clutter. How To Attach small to medium-size air plants to the wall using Prestik, washi tape or small pieces of
double-sided tape (the latter may damage your paint if you want to take down the display). Alternatively, if you don’t want to fix the plants to the wall directly, tie your air plants – at various heights and intervals – onto an organic piece of driftwood or bamboo using transparent fishing gut and make a mobile, then hang against the wall using hooks, picture nails or a simple curtain rail or copper pipe. Additional air plants can be displayed in contemporary vases or vessels.

RAINBOW CONNECTION Idea Create an area of focus in a space with an installation of hanging macramÊ plant holders in various designs. When creating an installation of any kind, put careful thought into the composition of colour, layering and placement: in this case a palette that’s bang up to date, plant holders suspended at different heights, additional hand finished texture in the form of crackle-glaze pots as well as a display of vessels and vases, some in shades and materials that harmonize and others that create a slight visual contrast.

HANGING GARDENS Idea A configuration of air plants suspended above the bathtub is an exotic and ever-evolving art installation. Don’t limit the idea of layering to your soft furnishings and colour palette: air plants are complemented by other tropical species such as flowering orchids and citrus blossoms with their intensely coloured leaves, so intersperse these for a dramatic display. A woven basket also makes a whimsical living display when draped with air plants. How To Hook screws are easily hung from the ceiling: secure lightweight air plants with transparent fishing gut for an ethereal effect and display the heavier species on window sills and flat surfaces. WELLNESS FITNESS
THE FASHION OF FITNESS From dancing and bouncing to cryotherapy and infrared therapy, this season’s health trends are the ideal combination of fitness and fun. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
W
ith summer on its way, many of us feel the need to update and refresh our exercise routines. If you're looking for something new, consider one of this season's fitness trends. Whether you're looking for an energetic workout, a way to spend more time outside, or an innovative way to recover from strenuous exercise, take a look at the activities that are currently gaining traction in the world of wellness.
DANCE AT DAWN Originally started in Zambia, Secret Sunrise has become a global movement and platform where everyone is invited to dance and celebrate the sunrise, from South Africa and Bali to Australia and Ibiza. The venue is generally kept a secret until just before the event, and at the session, everyone is given wireless headphones and encouraged to move in any way they like. The sessions are held at spots like St James, Noordhoek beach, and Deer Park, and sometimes include silent yoga and guided meditations. With a strong focus on celebration and connection, the events are fun and healthy — is there any better way to start the day than by dancing at dawn on one of Cape Town's most beautiful beaches? Keep an eye on www.secretsunrise.com to find upcoming events.

BEAT THE RUSH If you're keen to embrace your inner child, consider one of this year's hottest fitness trends — trampolining. While it might sound like an excuse to play, there are some considerable health benefits to bouncing around. In fact, studies conducted by NASA recently found that jumping on a trampoline is around 68 per cent more effective than jogging for the same amount of time. Plus, it's much easier and helps to develop strength, improve balance, and it releases
endorphins! To give it a try, visit Rush in Claremont. They run Rush Fit trampoline fitness training sessions, where you can choose from tailored cardio-based classes, HIIT training, or classes with a focus on balance, coordination and flexibility. If you're feeling adventurous, consider the Flip Out class, which teaches the skills for twisting, flipping, and wall walking! Have a look at www.rushsa.co.za to see the class schedule.

FIND A NEW WAY TO RECOVER Passive recovery techniques are among 2018's wellness trends, one of the most popular of which is infrared thermal therapy. Infrared works by stimulating circulation, boosting the body's ability to repair itself, and detoxifying the body, and infrared saunas can now be found at a number of spas and wellness centres in Cape Town, including The Institute of Healthy Ageing (www.ihasa.co.za) in Sea Point. Yemaya Spa (www.yemaya.co.za), also in Sea Point, offers infrared thermal therapy with the use of an infrared blanket — it works by heating the whole body, and helps to speed up metabolism and reduce inflammation — an ideal way to recover postworkout. Cryotherapy, on the other hand, involves the use of very cold temperatures to help manage pain, reduce inflammation, and increase cell survival. During the treatment, the body is exposed to liquid nitrogen vapour, which ranges from -120˚ and -160˚. The extreme cold causes a physiological response and helps improve recovery time after exercise. Cryoliving
in Plumstead offers whole body cryotherapy as well as cryofacials, which help to stimulate collagen production, improve circulation and reduce puffiness. Have a look at www.cryoliving.com to find out more. SV

WINE TASTE
Wine
FOR THOUGHT BY EMILE JOUBERT
S
outh Africa might have a wine industry going back all the way to 1659 when Jan van Riebeeck oversaw the first Cape harvest, but in certain aspects the country’s vinous ventures make this neck of the world appear like a new kid on the block. Take, for example, the spirit of independent winemaking where wine farms make wine from their own grapes and bottle the result under their own label. Fifty years ago, there were but a handful of such own-ventures. Stellenbosch, widely recognised as South Africa’s most prolific wine region and second oldest to Constantia, is a case on point. Today there might be some 200 wine-producing labels in this area, but back in 1968, only six farms had taken it upon themselves to make their own marketready wine. Although grapes were being grown in abundance, the big wine corporates such as the KWV, Distillers Corporation and Stellenbosch Farmers Winery were buying up most of the fruit and wine in bulk for their own brands. This led to a comfort zone for farmers of the time. They simply had to deliver grapes and bulk wine to the big guys and bank the cheques without having to contend with the challenges of bottling, marketing and selling their own label which – as any modern winery will tell you – can be a daunting task. But certain independent spirited producers challenged this situation, believing that if South Africa were to produce its best wines, the way to go was alone. By making your own wine from grapes grown on your doorstep which will express a sense of
place, something a mass-bottled brand from batches far and wide - such as Chateau Libertas or La Gratitude - could not do. Simonsig in Stellenbosch was one of the leaders of this independent movement and this year celebrates its 50th anniversary as a grower, maker and marketer of their own brand. To mark the occasion Simonsig released a commemorative and limited volume Chenin Blanc wine, Chenin being the first variety to adorn a Simonsig label. And besides the swanky slender magnum (1,5l) bottle and nostalgic label, this is a deliciously drinkable white wine that looks like a collectors’ item but wants to be polished off, as in pronto. Back then Chenin Blanc was still called “Steen”, and the Simonsig Steen 2017 is labelled as such. The wine is made from one of the oldest vineyards on the farm, harvested at four levels of ripeness allowing the cellar master, Johan Malan, to get creative in making a wine for the special commemorative year. Each parcel of the harvest – from zesty and young to mellow and ripe – was aged separately in oak for a year before Johan and his team set about blending the components until the sweet spot was found. And this they did smack-on, delivering a wine of intriguing complexity and depth with, at the same time, the whack of exciting freshness and bouncy brisk energy good Chenin Blanc should have.

TASTE WINE
The wood-ageing ensures the wine has a real presence on the palate with sufficient length to do justice to those gorgeous flavours of pear, green apple and melon. This is what makes Chenin Blanc such a great grape when it is vinified to perfection: detectable fruit characteristics in a wine that is most definitely dry and crisp at the same time, without any of the cloying or clumsy sweetness a lesser skilled producer of Chenin Blanc might be tempted to put on the market. But I guess that is where experience comes into play. The Simonsig Steen 2017 is available from the farm only, and it’s worth the journey or the phone call.
The magnificent Lourensford farm out Somerset West way might sport a history going back to 1700, but only began releasing its own label fifteen years ago. The estate has taken a while to find its straps in terms of vineyard plantings and focussed ranges but is of late attracting a lot of airtime with the superb quality of wines coming out of that super-size winery on the slopes overlooking False Bay. I have always believed that this cool region of Stellenbosch is made to grow Pinot Noir, and Lourensford is showing it can indeed be done. The Lourensford Dome Pinot Noir 2017 might just be one of the “hidden secrets” on the local Pinot Noir scene, especially if you are a Pinot lover who dares admit to buying versions of this noble variety at under R170 a bottle. The grapes are grown on those hills where the vines are fanned by the south-easterly breeze in summer and pummelled by the north-west in winter. It is cool, really, and this is what the thin-skinned Pinot Noir grape likes. In the cellar, winemaker Hannes Nel gives the wine a 13-month slumber in older French oak barrels, just leaving it there so the unique character of this grape variety can come to the fore. Yes, 2017 might sound pretty young to drink a Pinot Noir, but is this
not what could be a strong point for South Africa? The fact that you can create a pure, expressive and ready-to-drink wine made from the Pinot Noir grape without having to wait until the next total solar eclipse. The Dome Pinot Noir 2017 has upfront berryfruit and overall brightness, the kind that brings a smile to your face when sipping a glass of enjoyable wine. As it lingers on the palate an edge of spice – quite intriguing – comes through, something good Pinot does if the wood ageing has been done by a craftsman and not a lumberjack. The acidity perksup the wine, causing spot-on integration between the red and black fruit and the deeper, sophisticated and markedly sensual elegance of a wine for which I see tremendous potential. Definitely one of the finest Noirs from Stellenbosch, and a wine to watch – and to get hold of. Unlike Pinot Noir, its Burgundian brother Chardonnay is quite promiscuous in that it settles down easy on just about any piece of vineyard dirt. Great Chardonnay is found from most of South Africa’s regions – cool, warm, hot and cold; high in the mountains, next to the ocean and on the edge of the desert. Thus I was not that surprised to find an absolutely riveting Chardonnay from the Wellington region, an area about as closely suited to cool climate as the Hussar Grill is to vegan dining. Linton Park is the name, and the Chardonnay vines lie at between 380m and 560m on the Groenberg ensuring respite from the mascara-melting heat lower in the valley. The Linton Park Chardonnay 2016 was scrutinised recently, and together with that spinetingling Lourensford Dome Pinot Noir, I felt I had been abducted to Burgundy – kicking and screaming, of course. Linton Park’s Chardonnay is wooded in 1st and 2nd fill, but judiciously so. This allows a creamy lemon curd flavour, complemented by grilled nuts and that classic edge of hot butter and brioche. But acidity is the life of wine, and here a surge of freshness is reached to elevate the harmonious flavours that are typical of a good wine made from the world’s greatest white grape. Spring might still bring some cool weather, but a well-made, muscular and taut Chardonnay such as Linton Park makes for an all-climate white wine, polished and beautifully vivid in displaying those torrents of spring Ernest Hemingway wrote about. And as he said, this wine affirms his belief that good wine is the most civilised thing on earth. SV

ou’d be forgiven if you thought you were listening to a Michelinstarred chef when you hear Luke Whearty talk about cocktails. Luke, a longhaired Australian with the kind of relaxed deconstructed style that would be at home anywhere from Kreuzberg to Fitzroy to Bali is extolling the natural wealth of South Africa from behind the bar in his latest venture Outrage of Modesty in Cape Town. The name Outrage of Modesty is an official police offense in Singapore where Luke has another acclaimed bar, Operation Dagger. Now in its latest incarnation as Outrage of Modesty, it’s part Scandinavian and Japanese in design, with a giant artwork by Cheyenne Randall of JFK and Jackie O (complete with sleeves and neck tattoos) looking over you. Clean, and uncluttered yet designed for observation and drama, it’s somewhere between

a high-end sushi bar, a sauna, a fighting pit and an intimate theatre. The seating which is limited to 20 people (booking essential) is slightly tiered down to the focal point of the bar, where like an open kitchen you can view Luke and his team at work. The bar itself is kitted out more like a high tech kitchen with contraptions that emit liquid nitrogen, what looks like a sous vide and other devices that look like they are there for making tinctures and elixirs. There’s no brand-name liquor in sight, just a bottle of home-made banana wine and a few bottles of mystery distillations. As Luke moves calmly between stations, constructing the drinks and engaging with his customers, perhaps the most noticeable thing about Outrage of Modesty is that there’s no crazed, surging scrum, preening of egos and waving of cash or Amex cards. If you’re there, you have their undivided attention.
Welcome to the modern bar. Gone are the days where bars and punters were solely focused on excess and the promised value of two-for-one specials, happy hour, sweet, sugary cocktails with umbrellas and swizzly straws. Luke is at the forefront of a new breed of bars and bartenders (or if you prefer the term, mixologist) who value quality over quantity, story of sugar and creation of commercialism. Don’t expect him to flair bottles and set fire to punters eyebrows any more than you’d expect Heston Blumenthal to sling burgers. Dividing his time between Operation Dagger in Singapore and Outrage of Modesty in Cape Town (with a Melbourne project in the pipeline), Luke sees a visit to South Africa as a chance to truly experiment with fresh indigenous produce from buchu to pelargoniums, naartjies to seaweeds. “It’s such a breath of fresh air coming from Singapore
where everything is imported, there’s no agriculture. It’s really hard to get really excited about what you’re doing. Being from Oz and having this similar biodiversity I have this surreal sense of familiarity between Cape Town and Australia. I would honestly say it is some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world.” Like his chef friends and icons, there’s an element of alchemy to what Luke does as he pushes the boundaries with his bars in Singapore, Cape Town and soon Melbourne. Structured and spontaneous, foraged and finessed, crushed and sorted, burned and vaporised, distilled and delivered – he’s serving up something fresh every time. >>

I
n the wee hours of the 28th May 2017, a freak electrical fire sparked off in a building adjacent to Lanzerac’s historic Manor House. Within minutes, the fire was roaring through the wine estate’s precious collection of irreplaceable antique furniture and artwork, reducing much of the Governors Hall Restaurant, Craven Lounge, hotel reception, staff offices, and the vastly popular Taphuis Bar to ashes. Lanzerac suffered a loss of devastating proportions that just about broke the hearts of the estate’s staff and loyal patrons. Thankfully, no one was harmed. Today, just over a year later, it’s as though the fire never happened. What was lost has been rebuilt and after a year of being closed, the spectacularly remodelled hotel, restaurant, and bar are once again open to the public. If it were at all possible, Lanzerac Wine Estate is more beautiful than ever, transforming a miraculous modern staging of a phoenix rising from the ashes.
LANZERAC GETS ITS NAME In 1847, Elizabeth Katharina Johanna Devenish was born in South Africa. Affectionately called “Kitty” or “Kitta” in Afrikaans, Elizabeth married a diamond merchant and moved to England. After his death, she returned to South African soil, purchased a tract of farmland in Stellenbosch, and in 1914 changed its name to Lanzerac, allegedly to honour General Charles Lanzerac, a French General with whom she had apparently fallen madly in love with. Sprawling across the foothills of Stellenbosch’s Stellenberg Mountains, Lanzerac is now one of the country’s oldest estates. With 325 years under its belt, there is history and old-world charm radiating out of every quarter. Stately entrance gates lead visitors up a gorgeous tree-lined avenue, at the end of which lies oak-shaded lawns, manicured gardens, lush vineyards, dramatic mountain vistas, and - the heart of the estate - a regal Cape Dutch manor house.

Of course, no account of Lanzerac Wine Estate is complete without a mention of its wine, for which it has established a resounding reputation. In fact, if there were a better reason to spend a weekend or holiday at Lanzerac (other than to enjoy its beautiful accommodations and surroundings), it would be for ease of access to its cellars! Since 1692, Lanzerac’s soils have
been producing grapes of an exceptional quality, which have been turned into award-winning, champion wines by a procession of talented wine-makers. Lanzerac is also the world’s very first commercial producer of Pinotage. With all of this and a deli, restaurant, bar, spa, and gardens, who needs to venture outside of the estate’s gates?

A stay here takes luxury and privilege to unprecedented heights and having overcome its tragedy to realise a better version of itself, Lanzerac Wine Estate is an inspiration to anyone facing adversity. FILL YOUR BELLY In a pretty, old house in town, the Perfect Place is a great spot for coffee and cake, breakfast, or a light lunch. To start your day the right way, go for the pap and boerewors; Grandma's oats soaked
in buttermilk and whiskey and served with roasted nuts, cinnamon and honey; or corn and coriander fritters with fresh tomato chutney, spinach, bacon and poached eggs. For something sweet (and

A little out of town, on the Dunstone Estate, is The Stone Kitchen Bistro, which serves up classic, home-cooked meals. With a focus on fresh, local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients, the menu offers up options like slow braised and grilled pork ribs; vineyard platters of cold meats, cheeses, homemade chutney, preserves, fruits, and local olives; and vegan-friendly wrap boards packed with produce from the kitchen garden. The wine farm is best known for its Shiraz, so be sure to give it a try.

SAMPLE THE LOCAL PRODUCE Perhaps lesser known than some of the surrounding wine districts, Wellington has a small, but impressive wine route, which makes for a fun day out. Diemersfontein Wines has a cosy tasting room where guests are invited to taste the full range of wines, including the Diemersfontein Original range, the flagship Carpe Diem range, and the Thokozani range. The estate also includes a guesthouse, a beauty spa, and horse trails. Some other favourites include Doolhof Wine Estate, which produces two white varietals and a number of reds and offers tastings in a renovated wagon house; and
Bosman Family Vineyards, whose tasting room was originally part of a 260-yearold cellar. If wine is not your thing, consider exploring the Wellington Brandy Route, which includes De Compagnie; Nabygelegen Private Cellar; Napier Vineyards; Oude Wellington; and Upland Organic Estate. The Oude Wellington distillery forms part of their quaint restaurant, which is inside a Cape Dutch-style barn dating back to 1795. The menu boasts a range of comfort food, like Cape Malay chicken curry served with geelrys and sambals; parsley and mustard

ith residents from all over the world, Dubai offers an exciting fusion of cultures. Whether you're looking for shopping heaven, want to indulge in international flavours, or are interested in really experiencing the magic of a desert landscape, you'll find something to keep you busy in this one-of-a-kind city.
TAKE A STROLL While first-time visitors will be blown away by Dubai's modern skyline, the Al Fahidi historic district is well worth a visit if you're looking for a glimpse of the city's past. The area has been restored to reflect traditional life, and it's
easy to walk away an afternoon in the labyrinth of alleys, art galleries, and little shops. If you're in the neighbourhood, be sure to pop into Arabian Tea House — set in a pretty courtyard, the restaurant serves up some local favourites like Arabic breakfast trays of scrambled eggs, olives, labna (a creamy cheese made from strained yoghurt), marinated aubergines and fresh bread, which are perfect for sharing. After you've fuelled up, continue your stroll to the nearby textile souk (market), and then cross the Dubai Creek on an abra, a small motorised water taxi. For just 1 dirham (about R3,70), you can get a sense of the bustling creek and reach Deira, where you can explore the spice and gold souks. Arabian Tea House

MARVEL AT THE CITY No trip to Dubai would be complete without a look at the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. At 828 metres high, it's a downtown landmark, and you can't really miss it where ever you are in the city. But, to really take in its size, go to the waterfront promenade next to Dubai Mall for the nightly fountain show. The fountain is made up of a 275-metre-long central arc of jets, which spray to heights of 150 metres in harmony with music. Illuminated by lights and colour projectors against a backdrop of the Burj, the water creates a striking show. For a really great view, consider booking a table at one of the restaurants at Dubai Mall or the nearby Souk Al Bahar.

The Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi
SEE THE DESERT The city is full of glamour, luxurious spaces, and futuristic architecture — you could certainly be forgiven for getting wrapped up in its buzz. But, for a really unique experience, consider exploring outside of the city limits and heading into the desert. There are countless companies who offer desert safaris, most of which include a drive in the dunes, as well as camel rides, sand boarding, and dinner under the stars. For a truly magical sight, try and catch the sunset as it drops below the dunes. If you have time, consider a day trip to another of the emirates — Abu Dhabi's beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the country's top sights and well worth the trip, while Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain is one of the country's highest mountains. Bordering Oman, the peak can be reached via a winding highway. For more mountain scenery, take a drive to Ras al-Khaimah, or take your time and travel to Fujairah on the east coast for a stay in a beachside resort.
live music and beach lounging.
For a cultural experience The Jumeirah Mosque is open six days a week to visitors of all faiths — in fact, it’s the only mosque in the city open to the public. Take a tour to learn about Islamic rituals and to have a look at the intricate detail of the building.
So much more than a shopping centre, Dubai Mall is an attraction in itself. With around 1 200 shops, the mall also boasts an ice rink, aquarium, indoor theme parks, and a huge selection of restaurants. If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love the choice of international labels on offer. SV
For a night on the town After dark, Dubai comes alive with party people, and if you’re looking for fun, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the best beachside bars can be found near the Dubai Marina and surrounds — Barasti is one of the city’s best-loved spaces for drinks,

OFF THE
beaten track
The Cape’s hiking trails are sometimes steep and sometimes challenging but always packed with splendour, wildlife, and adventure. BY THEA BECKMAN
T
he Cape bears a lofty and welldeserved reputation as a prime destination for outdoor lovers. The undulating farmlands and vineyards of the city’s outskirts taper into a rocky and rugged peninsula that strikes out towards the divide between the mighty Indian and Atlantic Oceans. With such diverse landscapes, scenic views so beautiful they’ll just about bring you to tears, and rich pockets of nature to explore, our city is indeed an outdoor enthusiast’s Eden and hiking, a favourite pastime.
DEVIL’S PEAK, TABLE MOUNTAIN, AND LION’S HEAD Standing sentry over the city bowl is a rocky trifecta of limitless potential for exploration: Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head. The city-facing slopes of these three megaliths offer hikers of all fitness levels a vast network of nature trails. All three are popular and yield spectacular views, but Lion’s Head has got to be the most heavily populated, with her ascension route becoming congested in the early morning and around sunset.

SPORT HIKING
Other popular hiking trails in this area include Platteklip gorge, a 3-hour, quad-bustingly steep hike that leads to the summit of Table Mountain; Pipe track, an easy-going 4-hour walk that follows the contour path around the northwestfacing slopes of Table Mountain Nature Reserve; and Devil’s Peak, an exhilarating 4-hour hike along the saddle of Table Mountain and then a steep ascent to the summit.
FOREST WALKS AND TRAILS On the other side of the peninsula range, where visiting cold fronts originating from the Southern Ocean drop their heaviest rainfall, the landscape changes from one of boulder-strewn, Fynbos clad mountain slopes and rocky cliffs to thick forest. In places like Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Skeleton Gorge (top right), and Constantia Nek, and Cecilia, Orangekloof, and Newlands forest, a thick overhead canopy shields hikers from the sun and perfumes the air with pine, while waterfalls, running streams, and forest birds provide an enchanting soundtrack. Trails through these forested regions are mostly well-defined, and some even have picnic spots where visitors can stop for a breather.
WINE FARM HIKING TRAILS The Cape is home to close to 20 wine routes and

estates that can be counted in their hundreds. A great assortment of these pay homage to their spectacular natural surroundings by dedicating a percentage of their acreage to wilderness and Fynbos preservation, which, in many cases, guests can explore by foot. La Motte (Franschhoek), Thelema (Stellenbosch), Zevenwacht (Kuils River), Lourensford (Helderberg), and Meerendal (Durbanville) are just a handful of such wine farms. And what better way could there be to conclude a hike than with a wine tasting and lunch at a beautiful wine estate?
OUR NATURAL HERITAGE IS A GIFT We have, on our literal doorstep, vast acres of preserved wilderness with yawning views of craggy mountains, quilted farmlands, shimmering azure ocean, and often all three at once. Our mountains are carpeted with a unique vegetation biome that is found nowhere else on Earth and anywhere you might wander is likely inhabited by rich, colourful birdlife and animals, such as baboons, dassie, mongoose, eland, zebra, genets, porcupines, and even caracals. It is no wonder that the Cape has become such a popular hiking destination. The only question remaining is when next do you plan to tread the Cape’s trails? SV

MERCEDES-BENZ CARS
M
ercedes-Benz is synonymous with luxury sedans, exotic sports cars and monster (yet refined) SUV’s. One category we have not associated Merc with has been the bakkie/pick-up league. Until now.
CRAZY BEAUTIFUL This is a brand-new concept for the luxury car segment. In the beginning, it was a big deal for them to bring out SUV’s but for years now that has been the norm. Giving us a bakkie on the outside and a luxury passenger car on
you discover a world of treasures. Luxury, top of the range, treasures. Soft touch leather all around, typical to the 3-point star giant. There are two leather options, nut brown and black. Top of the range infotainment system with all the bells and whistles, impressive climate control, automatically adjustable seats, 360-degree parking assist camera, what more can you ask for.
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS This beautiful creature dishes up two powerful four-cylinder, twin-turbo engines. The X220d
produces a phenomenal 120kW, and this is pushed to 140kW by the X250d. Both formidable contenders. With a top speed of 180km/h in the X250d manual, she is as fast as she is beautiful.
IN THE POUND SEAT There are 2 models in the line up for now. The X220d and the X250d, the latter comes out as a 2x4 and 4x4. Starting price clocks in at R642 103 and going up to R723 811. The X-Class comes standard with Mercedes-Benz’s PremiumDrive plan, giving you peace of mind once you sign on the dotted line and take ownership of your fancy bakkie. The plan includes a 6 year/100 000km, which you can also extend to and 8 year/180 000km maintenance plan at a small additional cost. SV
the inside was genius, its pure bliss, Mercedes-Benz magic at its best. The exterior design lines are smooth and sleek. The nose of the bakkie sports a typical Merc visual, like what you’d expect from the SUV’s they produce, yet stands out in a class of its own. The grille houses an oversized Mercedes-Benz symbol, just to confirm the ‘what and who’.
IN THE LAP OF LUXURY The exterior is undoubtedly bakkie, but the interior, now that’s where the X-Class differentiates from the rest of the pack. As you open the door to Pandora’s box,

oyota is one of the front-runners when it comes to buying a bakkie. It has been like this for years, and if they keep doing what they’ve always done, it will never change. The brand-new Toyota Hilux Dakar is universally accepted as a global leader in its range wherever you are in the world.
HELLO GOOD LOOKING The Toyota Hilux Dakar’s new facelift is pristine, neat and boisterously rugged. It screams attitude. The modern grille, this time around, is squarer in design. The same design aspects featured in the grille can be seen on the lower bumper area, too. The Hilux Dakar edition sports signature Dakar insignia.
REFINED FROM WITHIN As rugged and mean as the Hilux Dakar looks on the outside, its pretty refined on the inside, which is a pleasant surprise. The interior is all black from the roof lining all the way to the all-black leather upholstery, creating a luxurious impression. The infotainment system packs everything you need from Satellite Navigation to Bluetooth, USB reader, CD/DVD Player. All of this is run
by an easy to use, fuss-free touch screen.
POWERED UP The Hilux Dakar is available in Xtra Cab and Double Cab. There are two engine models in the line-up, all based on the Raider models. The 2.8 GD-6 powertrain and the 4.0l V6. The V6 is only available in the Double Cab. The 2.8 GD-6 model is packed with an impressive fourcylinder turbodiesel motor that kicks out 130kW and 420Nm in the manual variant and 450Nm in the automatic. The impressive V6 kicks out 175kW and 376Nm.
STOCKING UP The Toyota Hilux Dakar starts at R470 300 for the manual 2.8 GD-6 Xtra Cab and clocking up to R662 700 for the powerful V6. Toyota always takes care of business once you leave the showroom floor. The 2.8 GD-6 models come with a standard 9 services/90 000km service plan, and the 4.0 V6 model comes with 6 services/90 000km period plan. Couple this with a warranty period of of 3year/100 000km on all models and you are good to go. SV
