e live in challenging times, and while the road ahead remains uncertain, we are delighted to be back and able to offer you our spring issue of Southern Vines. In the spirit of wellness, we look at the benefits of rooibos, plus we’ve put together a healthy and scrumptious menu for you to try at home. While international travel plans may be on hold for the moment, there’s no reason we shouldn’t make the most of our time spent at home. In this issue, we look at fun ways to update our spaces with the latest décor trends. We also discover some beautiful local destinations and look at the most exciting South African-based companies and the products they offer. While many of our local businesses may be suffering at the moment, there are initiatives in place that seek to uplift our communities — in this issue we look at the Restaurant Rescue Project, an independent effort to preserve Cape Town’s gastronomic culture. We’re looking forward to a brighter future, and we’re ready to embrace the new normal as the world slowly gets back to where we all once were. Stay positive, stay safe! LULU & MARULA

We just love the skincare collections from Lulu & Marula. Each product is made with natural, plant-based ingredients and minimal amounts of glass and cardboard packaging are used to ensure that recycling is possible. With spring upon us, we particularly love the energising range, which includes a body balm, bath oil and body polish. The body balm is made with a combination of butters and oils, including mango and avocado, which are easily absorbed and leave skin feeling hydrated and smooth. Naartjie, lemongrass and bergamot add a refreshing fragrance. The energising body scrub is an invigorating blend of sugar and pink Himalayan salt and is enriched with mango butter, marula and sweet almond oil — it’s great for improving circulation and nourishing the skin. www.luluandmarula.co.za

Biomedcan capsules and chocolate

Biomedcan offers a range of CBD products, including a variety of wellness capsules for sleep, mood, mind and pleasure. The products are designed to help with many of the health and lifestyle issues people face in a modern lifestyle and is free from gluten and additives. They also offer delicious dark and milk chocolate bars, which are handcrafted locally by famous chocolatier Richard von Geusau.

The new release from Garmin is the first of their smartwatches to offer solar charging. It has a 1.4inch power glass lens that uses sunlight to extend battery life. It also has a number of training features, onboard mapping, music streaming, Garmin Pay functionality, wrist-based heart rate, as well as safety and tracking features. We love that the watch has such a long battery life, plus new purpose-built functionality including surf, mountain biking and climbing activities. www.garmin.com/en-ZA

Berdoues Grands Crus Summer Collection

The limited edition Grand Crus Mix & Match collection from Berdoues is just perfect for the warmer months. Each fragrance is named after a beach — Bondi Beach, Sunrise Beach, Calvi Beach and Venice Beach — and each has its own distinct perfume reminiscent of the spirit of the place. The Bondi Beach fragrance combines lemon and bergamot with neroli and vanilla to channel the lively Australian spot for which it is named. Sunrise Beach in Thailand is a magical, unspoilt natural environment — as such, the fragrance reveals smooth, sweet notes of tangerine, lime and coconut. Calvi Beach offers a sensory escape to the shores of Corsica with fresh clementine, basil and lemon; while Venice Beach is an intense mix of orange, sage and smoky guaiac wood. 30ml Eau de Parfum | R595 | Available at select Foschini & Truworths stores

LOU HARVEY WHAT’S HOT

SOUTH AFRICA’S

ORIGINAL

Material Girl Bringing the outdoors in and the introverted out with Lou Harvey. BY THEA BECKMAN

S

outh Africa’s much-loved material girl Lou Harvey has just unveiled her new collection of designs and, if possible, they are more beguiling and vibrant than ever! From modern, multi-striped options and a range of classic vintage florals to her personal favourite, the “Leopard Rosa”—a seamless marriage of rose motifs and leopard print—Lou Harvey’s designs are an exuberant homage to nature’s brave and bold colour palette. Bags, towels, scatter cushions, aprons, cosmetic bags, and tennis racquet covers… if it’s made from material, you’ll probably discover it reimagined in Lou Harvey’s online store. Now, with her latest offering, she brings the delicious audacity of Mother Nature into the home with her collection of wallpapers, much to the delight of design enthusiasts, fashionistas, and lovers of all things bright and beautiful.

WHAT’S HOT LOU HARVEY

Drawing inspiration from life’s greatest muse

“I’m inspired by authenticity and people who show genuine kindness. And of course, my children, I learn from them every day.” Browsing through Lou Harvey’s collections, it’s not hard to see from where the Durban-born entrepreneur and fashion designer draws her inspiration. It’s life’s greatest muse: nature (and her children)! Since Mother Nature is anything but shy with her colour palette, Lou’s delightfully ostentatious designs follow suit, celebrating botanicals, floral prints, and motifs that evoke the natural world around us, particularly the Cape’s indigenous flora. She is also inspired by the architecture and landscapes of exotic destinations like Morocco.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Unsurprisingly, Lou’s popular material ranges were born of a simple desire to fulfil her own need for valiantly vibrant interior and fashion design. This desire arose after the birth of her first daughter, Izzy, when she noticed with dismay the sore lack of fashionable, yet practical mummy-friendly accessories. And so, with an education in design, experience designing cushions for Wetherlys and Home Fabrics, and an entrepreneurial venture into a bag-making business under her belt, Lou decided to design her own fabrics and make her own accessories, placing fun and playfulness as a priority, but with a practical edge.

From national to international escapades “I loved spending time in Tokyo: it’s an incredibly sophisticated city. I loved exploring, and, of course, it’s a great place to shop.”

Pretty quickly, Lou garnered an audience of people of all ages, both old and young, who were hungry for her extravagant style of bags (handbags, laptop, cosmetic, cooler, beach, overnight, yoga, school lunches, nappy bags, etc.) and other lifestyle and interior design elements. Sixteen years later, Lou Harvey’s burgeoning brand has smashed out victory after victory. From her first store in Durban, which was followed by more stores in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Johannesburg, Lou’s distribution now extends as far afield as Australia, China, Israel, Mexico, and the United States: a market that accounts for almost half of all her sales.

Walls dressed to thrill

In spite of her success thus far and an online business that is ramping up in today’s pandemic-

stricken world, Lou Harvey isn’t resting on her laurels. Most recently, she has added a range of wallpapers to her offering, which incorporates 12 different designs featuring a blend of bold botanicals, floras, natural elements, and geometry. “I have always had a passion for interior design,” says Lou, whose formal education was in fashion and interior design. And now, her passion is realised with wallpapers that breathe exuberant life into spaces that lack personality, identity, and joie de vivre.

Beautifully untethered

It takes a mind completely and beautifully untethered to boring convention to cook up the delightfully flamboyant designs that are ubiquitous to Lou Harvey’s collections. SV To explore her gorgeous range of bags and other accessories, go to www.louharvey.co.za

WHAT’S HOT ART

SCENE

Inspired by the natural world, ordinary people, emotional states of being and local landscapes, three local artists create work that evokes a real sense of connection. Using a combination of colour and texture, each artist transforms their own perspective and emotions into striking pieces that encourage the viewer to slow down and take a moment to reflect. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

Balekane Legoabe

Balekane Legoabe lives and works in Pretoria. Qualified with degrees in Visual Communication and Film Arts, she creates digital artwork that seeks to explore the complexities of values and truth and their impact on both personal and social identity. Balekane has exhibited her work around the country, including spaces in Johannesburg and Cape Town. She is the 2019 winner of the StateoftheART Gallery Award, and her solo exhibition What it Feels Like to be in Water was recently exhibited online. Through her work, Balekane explores the relationships between psychological, emotional and spiritual elements and how they influence each other. Inspired largely by the natural world, Balekane is also driven by the potential for art to evoke real emotion. Balekane creates digital collages in which animals and human figures are the primary subjects. She also creates unique mixed media artworks using a range of textures and materials, including paint, ink, masking tape and sandpaper — the results are colourful, visceral and expressive.

Shakes Tembani

Shakes Tembani has been interested in art from a very young age and has worked in a variety of mediums, including mosaic and painting. After completing his studies, Shakes was a resident artist at the Castle of Good Hope Art Studios. He has exhibited his work both locally and abroad, and his pieces have appeared in collections around the world, including spaces in Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. Shakes takes much of his inspiration from the lives of ordinary people, and his work portrays scenes of everyday life — churchgoers, people working, single parents. He uses his own photographs and experiences as part of his process and explores a range of issues faced by people going about their everyday lives. Shakes’ work is characterised by his use of bold colours and interpretations of human figures recognisable by their group identity rather than by individual characteristics.

Tanja Truscott

Born in the Netherlands, and currently based in Cape Town, Tanja Truscott has worked as an Art teacher, illustrator, art director and designer. She has been a full-time artist for the last five years and has exhibited in a number of group shows around the country, including galleries in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Somerset West and Riebeek Kasteel. Tanja’s artworks are abstract expressions inspired by landscapes, as well as literature, poetry and music. Driven by her fascination with painterly abstraction and its capacity to visually and emotionally engage its viewers, Tanja uses her work as a means of reflection and contemplation. Each piece is a beautiful balance of colour and shape, and her artworks are often an exploration of her own response to a physical environment. SV

CHEF MATT MANNING WHAT’S HOT

Chef

MATT MANNING Chef, entrepreneur, new dad, and guiding light for South Africa's restaurant industry. BY THEA BECKMAN

H

e may have been born in London but Chef Matt Manning is such a beloved fixture of the local restaurant scene that he’s, by now, considered an honorary South African. Amongst a plethora of noteworthy ventures, Chef Matt is the patron chef of the vastly popular Grub & Vine on Bree Street; the innovative spirit behind the Restaurant Rescue Project, which is helping restaurants remain afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic; and, most recently, a new father, having welcomed his and partner Roxanne’s son Roman James Manning to the world on 1st July 2020. Let’s meet talented and accomplished chef, entrepreneur, dad, and local hero Chef Matt Manning.

From Hell’s Kitchen to Mount Olympus of Gastronomy

Chef Matt honed his craft to a razor edge in London’s finest Michelin-starred restaurants, surviving Gordon Ramsey’s incandescent temper, amongst other celebrity chefs and their stratospheric expectations, before relocating to Cape Town in sunny South Africa. No sooner had he arrived on our fair shores than he ran the gauntlet of the country’s Mount Olympus of fine dining, La Colombe at Silvermist Estate in Constantia, which is routinely voted amongst the world’s best restaurants.

corporate functions to masterclasses and guest chef evenings. (Thechefsstudio.co.za) That is before COVID-19 hit the country like a Manhattansized asteroid.

Fine dining goes online

Just like every other establishment in South Africa, Grub & Vine and Chef’s Studio were forced to close their doors to the public during the nationwide lockdown. But while Chef Matt has been able to reopen the Grub & Vine for lunch (12:00 to 15:00) and dinner (16:00 to 21:00),

But it takes more than the prestige and challenge of a lauded kitchen to satisfy the restlessness of spirit that comes with being a born entrepreneur. And that’s exactly what Chef Matt Manning is. So, he bid farewell to La Colombe to pursue a solo career as a private chef, staging a constellation of interactive popup dining experiences across South Africa. Before long, Chef Matt became well known for his dining experiences, garnering the affection and accolades of casual diners, foodies, and food critics.

Grub & Vine is born

Eventually, even a rolling stone must succumb to the gravitational pull of the Earth and so, at the end of 2018, Chef Matt put down roots and opened up his very own eatery—Grub & Vine—on the carotid artery of Cape Town’s culinary scene: Bree Street. (Grubandvibe.co.za) Naturally, Grub & Vine followed in the footsteps of Chef Matt’s previous endeavours, attracting hoards of positive reviews with its colourful and fresh seasonal menus and proudly South African wine lists. Here, refined bistro-style fare is the order of the day with a casually sexy and unpretentious ambience that is as perfect for first dates as it is for birthday celebrations with friends. Up the stairs from Grub & Vine, however, is a different affair. At The Chef’s Studio, guests can roll up their sleeves and join Chef Matt in the kitchen, spending interactive evenings cooking and eating under his patient instruction. The Chef’s Studio also routinely plays host to bespoke events, from fully catered dinner parties and

Wednesday to Saturday, the Chef’s Studio—being a more intimate space and hands-on experience—has been forced to remain in hibernation. Ever the entrepreneurial spirit, Chef Matt soon devised a brilliant way to combine the elegant cuisine of Grub & Vine and the unique dining experience of The Chef’s Studio with his “Virtual Dining” offering. For only R625 per person, the experience includes a delectable five-course menu (available for delivery or pick-up from the restaurant), three courses of which are already prepared and two of which you get to prepare yourself following a video tutorial given by Chef Matt.

A guiding light with the Restaurant Rescue Project

Having somehow survived the months-long COVID-19 lockdown, South Africa’s restaurant industry was only just staggering back to its feet again when the pandemic delivered another sucker punch to its guts in the form of a 9 pm (now 10 pm) curfew and a reinstating of its ban on liquor sales. “After being able to reopen our doors, we thought we’d seen a turning point for our little bistro,” said Chef Matt. “We were wrong. This announcement could very well be the final nail in the coffin for many of the restaurants and wineries we know and love.” Not one to remain down for long, Chef Matt paired up with his good friend Alex Dale, the founder of Radford Dale Wines, and together they cooked up the Restaurant Rescue Project, an initiative that pairs restaurants with independent wineries in a sort of “adopt-a-restaurant” scheme. These wineries then deliver a free case of wines to customers who buy vouchers to eat at the restaurant, either now or later. The project has had a huge impact, keeping many of the Cape’s iconic and beloved restaurants afloat, thanks to the promise of free wine! Hopefully, with the bans lifted, recovery will be a swift process. (Restaurantrescueproject.com)

A fresh horizon for every day

Since his earliest days serving in London’s Michelin-starred restaurants, Chef Matt Manning has proven to be an unstoppable force, allowing neither the prestige of a position at La Colombe nor a viral apocalypse to trip up his ambitions to chase fresh horizons. And while Chef Matt may have come to us from foreign soils, he has proven himself to be as much a son of South Africa as his newborn baby boy. SV

he bans have been lifted, and we are jubilant because our favourite restaurants have, once again, opened their doors to guests, bringing exciting, innovative, and delicious food and flowing wine back into our lives. In celebration of this significant step forward in South Africa's recovery from COVID-19, here is a selection of Southern Vines' favourite restaurants in Cape Town.

La Colombe

La Colombe delivers emotionally evocative fine dining and child-like delight with its magical food presentation and interactive courses. Perched high up in the saddle between Constantia and Hout Bay, a meal here is an epic food experience that lasts several hours and is unrelenting in its perfection. It’s little wonder that La Colombe is consistently positioned amongst the world’s top restaurants. Where: Silvermist Wine Estate, Main Road, Constantia Nek Web: www.lacolombe.co.za

Idiom Restaurant

Winding your way up through farmlands and quaint pockets of vineyards on the foothills of Sir Lowry’s Pass, the winery and restaurant at Idiom rears up out of the plush landscape like a dream. Here, every dish is a symphony of vibrant colours and fresh ingredients, paired beautifully with highly attentive service and a handsome collection of Italian varietal wines, like Sangiovese, Barbera, Nebbiolo, and the absolutely sensational Zinfandel Primitivo. Where: Da Capo Vineyards, Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, Somerset West Web: www.idiom.co.za

FYN

It’s a year on now and this Japanese-South African urban fine-dining eatery has continued to impress. The Cape’s indigenous flora may inspire the name, as well as many of the ingredients, but FYN’s menu is a multi-sensory ode to Japanese food theatre. Each course arrives upon the table like a gentle tide, bringing with it a selection of artfully composed bites that are exquisite in flavour, balanced in texture, and immaculate in presentation. This is Kaiseki style dining at its finest outside of its mother country. Where: 5th Floor, Speakers Corner, 37 Parliament Street, Cape Town Web: www.fynrestaurant.com

Salsify

The brainchild of legendary Cape Town Chef Luke Dale Roberts, this classically beautiful restaurant (with some serious splashes of the avant-garde) serves ingeniously innovative gastronomy against a backdrop of mountain slopes, beachfront, and Atlantic Ocean views. Where: The Roundhouse, Round House Road, Camps Bay Web: www.salsify.co.za

FOLIAGE

Field-to-fork is the ethos behind the exceptional menu at the upmarket bistro-meets-contemporary restaurant, Foliage. Located in the thick of the action on Huguenot Road in Franschhoek, the foodie capital of the Cape, much of Foliage’s menu is weaved around whatever treasures chef Chris Erasmus can forage from the surrounding hills in the morning. Where: 11 Huguenot Road, Franschhoek Web: www.foliage.co.za

Noop

From the Afrikaans word “to compel” comes this charming, home-style restaurant that oozes warmth and history. Noop is located in a heritage building on Paarl’s main road, under the canopy of two towering oak trees. The cuisine here is an honest yet expert composition of fresh, local ingredients and handpicked meat cuts, paired with an extensive wine list from the surrounding winelands. Protégé is amongst the restaurants redefining the approach to fine dining, maintaining its calibre and innovation but delivering it in a casual setting. Located in the heart of Franschhoek and headlined by exquisitely talented chef Jess van Dyk (previously of La Colombe), each dish on the menu is a work of art. Plus, there’s always something special going on at Protégé, and right now, it’s a variety of dishes for only R55 on Sundays (16:00 to 21:00)! ows of cacti, china dogs, a whacky cluster of retro flush mounted lights on the wall, and a glass cabinet brimming with vintage cameras – all before you have stepped beyond the lobby. This is the kind of quirk that one has come to expect from the design dynamite behind Kirsten Goss Jewellery. Kirsten admits they took on the transformation of this home with the same out-of-the box intentions as she has when fitting out a new shop. Capturing views of the Constantiaberg Mountains, by clearing the garden and shifting the bearing of the house, proved to be the making of the home. The ever-changing shades of the slopes now dominate the outlook, and Kirsten and Clive chose to contrast this placidness with a sweeping lawn dominated by a sexy circular pool and a series of round beds of water wise plants. ‘I call it our “crop circle garden”, laughs Kirsten. ‘We wanted it to be an inside-outside house. So much so that we chose to use artificial turf in the garden so it feels like a carpet. At night the lights make it a really dramatic space and our family moves in and out and we don’t need to worry about the kids getting dirty. It feels like we have another room to use,’ she explains.

‘Prickly Pear’

cacti and ceramic dogs are the first clue that the outwardly demure bungalow houses a fantastic collection of unusual objects and bold design decisions. Kirsten pictured with son Cosmo. Clive’s ‘magpie’ obsession with collecting vintage cameras is celebrated in a cabinet in the hallway. With children ranging from toddlerhood to their teens the home had to cater to flexible needs, but that didn’t mean they had to crimp on fun. The kitchen features light functions that can transform it from a family hub into a strobe and colour-filled ‘party’ zone at the flick of a switch and the ceiling-height doors in bold colours reflect Kirsten’s weakness for striking combinations. ‘Every time I fit out a new shop my house ends up looking like it,’ laughs Kirsten referring to the ‘disco’ and strobe lights that are fitted into the kitchen cabinets and inspired by her ‘karaokelook’ store on Cape Town’s Foreshore. ‘I love the notion that we are having a regular family dinner but have disco lights on too. It’s all about being playful,’ she says.

‘I’m not afraid of mixing shades together,’ she continues, ‘but you almost have to be deliberate about it to pull it off. I’m not big on decorating. I’m more about throwing something down to see if it works,’ explains Kirsten. Kirsten’s partner, filmmaker/photographer Clive Will, has added his own conspicuous contributions. A series of Clive’s eye-catching prints and his insatiable appetite for objects collected from artists, craftspeople and markets across Africa are curated throughout the home. ‘I think we have a penchant for the unexpected, the sometimes unloved and the brave, but we are also big on quality, longevity and comfort,’ explains Kirsten of their design choices. ‘I’d say we lean towards a clean, bold style, but we also get a lot of joy out of eccentric pieces,’ she says. Furniture choices range from antiques, to midcentury modern and contemporary pieces, so the addition of oak parquet floors provided an anchor for the otherwise eclectic vibes. ‘

Kirsten wanted

a ‘bomb-proof’ area where the children could watch TV and relax. ‘They run in from the pool and jump on the sofa; they have sleepovers here,’ she laughs. ‘Every home needs a space you don’t feel precious about.’ A striking mix of shades in the lounge gives it a playful temperament, but the choices of a clean-lined modular couch and graphic steel coffee table ensures it retains a grown-up edge. With an open-plan TV room, dining room and kitchen opening onto the garden the flow of rooms is both effortless and practical. An expansive (and it has to be said, irreverent) lounge forms a link between the family zone and the couple’s bedroom/ bathroom – which is again a single zone that opens onto the garden. The children’s rooms can be found off a corridor that lies behind the kitchen. Kirsten chose to replace all the doors and windows with oversized bespoke pieces made of oak or steel, and porthole and strip windows make for surprise views. This injects a plethora of natural light into the home and is indicative of the way she chose to experiment with shapes and scale throughout the property. Kirsten has previously lived in heritage-style homes, so the switch to a more austere build provided the opportunity for a new design adventure. Brimming with fine art and vintage finds, Kirsten and Clive’s home reflect their down-to-earth sensibilities and makes for an engaging family home. Kitchen disco lights and all.

Update YOUR SPACE

Colour palettes, furniture styles and décor elements that are trending right now. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

or many of us, our homes are our sanctuaries, and with more time spent inside, it’s well worth making them as beautiful as possible. This season’s décor trends range from functional textiles and fresh colours to granny chic frills and needlepoint accessories. Whether you’re looking for a simple update or ready to fully embrace a new trend, you’re sure to find some inspiration among this season’s latest looks.

DECOR TRENDS

Bring the outdoors in

What better way to embrace the beauty and hope of spring than to bring a little of the natural world inside? Using plants as décor pieces is an easy way to breathe life into an interior — a mix of shades and textures adds instant freshness to any space. Some of the most popular plants at the moment include the red prayer plant, monstera, philodendron and the money tree, while plants that tone well with Classic Blue (this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year), such as sansevieria and calatheas, are right on-trend.

And it’s not just real foliage that brings nature indoors — floral wallpaper has also made a comeback. This season sees new interpretations of botanical designs, and while classic florals still make a statement, tropical prints are also having a moment. When it comes to this year’s colour palette, shades of green and warm earth tones are proving popular.

DECOR TRENDS

Make bold choices

While the monochromatic style has traditionally been associated with minimal, pale colours, this season sees the trend shift toward rich shades like cobalt blue, plum and intense greens. The trend is all about choosing one colour (or shades thereof) and fully embracing it in a space. Jewel tones like cobalt and emerald green make for a chic choice, while berry and coral shades are bold and fun. No matter the hue, the look is both sophisticated and daring. For a look that’s really up-to-date, Pantone’s Classic Blue is a great option — reminiscent of a vast dusk sky, the shade is timeless and elegant.

TRENDS DECOR

Choose hardy textiles

When it comes to textiles, one of the most prominent trends is the use of performance fabrics, and with more time spent at home, this one is set to stay for a while. Performance fabrics are functional without compromising on aesthetic quality, plus they’re generally a sustainable choice as they last for years. In fact, sustainable materials in general are big this year as people become more and more conscious of environmental issues and eco-friendly and nature-inspired dÊcor becomes increasingly popular. Perfect for families and pets, performance fabrics are resistant to stains and easy to clean making them ideal for living room and dining room furniture.

DECOR TRENDS

Have some fun

Quirky bathroom designs are having a moment, and there’s a lot of fun to be had with this trend — think bold wallpaper, interesting textures and unique tiles. Small bathrooms are ideal for creating an unexpected look with just a few dramatic elements, and some of this year’s most popular bathroom trends include brushed brass details, funky shaped tiles like hexagons and scallops, marbled wallpaper and framed mirrors. Another fun trend, grandmillennial style blends classic and contemporary design — traditional elements are combined with fresh colours, furniture and eclectic décor items. Some of the trend’s essentials include chinoiserie ceramics like wall plates, figurines and ginger jars, needlepoint pillows, chintz, wicker furniture and accessories, block print fabrics and colours like bright pastels.

Update your furniture

When it comes to on-trend furniture, pieces with Europeaninspired details are very current. Taking inspiration from German and Italian influences, elements like metal legs, sloped arms and knife-edge welts are becoming more and more popular even in traditional and mainstream spaces. Another style that has made a recent comeback is rattan and wicker furniture —while the materials are nostalgic, they are also being reinvented in fresh ways. The natural textures lend an effortlessly chic look to an interior (or outdoor living space) and go well with a number of other trends, like indoor plants and the grandmillennial style. SV

Rooibos BENEFITS OF A product of the Cederberg, rooibos is loved for its flavour and health benefits.

BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

T

he earthy flavour of rooibos is a firm South African favourite. In fact, the unique shrub only grows in our very own Cederberg region. But, it’s not just the taste that has put the herbal tea on the map both locally and abroad — rooibos has a number of health benefits thanks to its antioxidant-rich contents.

It’s good for your heart

Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in rooibos may actually help to boost heart health in a number of ways. Some research suggests that the herbal tea may have a positive impact on blood pressure, plus it can increase levels of good cholesterol in individuals who are at risk of heart disease. In fact, one study looked at adults who were at high risk of heart disease and found that after drinking six cups of rooibos a day for six consecutive weeks, their levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol dropped, while their good (HDL) cholesterol increased.

SPRING 2020 SOUTHERN VINES

82_Wellness.indd 83

83

It’s naturally caffeine-free

For those who prefer to avoid or limit caffeine, rooibos is a great alternative to coffee, as well as green and black tea. Besides the fact that rooibos is naturally free from caffeine, it is also much lower in tannin than other types of tea. This is beneficial as tannins, such as those found in black tea, tend to affect the body’s ability to absorb important nutrients like iron.

It’s full of antioxidants

Many of the health benefits associated with rooibos are due to the many antioxidants which it contains. These antioxidants, which include aspalathin and quercetin, help to protect the cells of the body from damage caused by free radicals, reducing the risk of illness over time. Some studies suggest that the antioxidant aspalathin (of which rooibos is the only known natural source) may have the ability to improve insulin levels and balance blood sugar levels.

Their range includes cleansers, toners, moisturisers and treatment products such as masks, tissue oil and serum.

FOR DIY DRINKS

Red Espresso makes a range of ground rooibos, as well as rooibos tea capsules and instant red cappuccino sachets, all of which are ideal caffeine-free alternatives to coffee and black tea. Interestingly, a shot of Red Espresso contains ten times more antioxidants than a cup of regular rooibos tea because it is so concentrated. Available from Woolworths and Dischem or online from redespresso.com

For something different LMC, another local brand, also offers a range of flavoured rooibos — options include Ginger and Lemongrass, Earl Grey and Chai. They’ve recently launched a delicious, must-try Pear & Elderflower infusion, too. SV

TASTE WINE

The Season’s Finest Although lockdown has had a serious impact on the wine industry, there are still so many gems to enjoy. BY EMILE JOUBERT

WINE TASTE

B

esides the regular pleas to government to unlock our industry, the South African wine space was understandably quiet during the lockdown. Noticeable wine action, however, was instigated by South Africa’s Chenin Blanc Association, the body that represents the Cape’s Chenin Blanc winemakers. During lockdown they refused to go quietly, especially on 20 June when they brought the country to a standstill with a tidal wave of promotional activities encouraging people all over the world to Drink Chenin. This was a gutsy, lively and admirable effort as thousands-upon-thousands of social media users espoused the merits of Chenin Blanc and, ultimately, our fantastic wine lifestyle.

A beautiful chenin

With this in mind, it is difficult not to begin this missive without mentioning one of South Africa’s array of superlative Chenin Blancs. It is hard to select one, but Kleine Zalze Family Reserve 2018 FR Chenin Blanc from one of Stellenbosch’s finest exponents of South Africa’s most well-known white grape is worth mentioning. The Kleine Zalze Family Reserve is made from some serious fruit, namely grapes picked from vines over 40 years of age and grown on unirrigated bush-vines. There is no fixing and topping up of the growing conditions with a spray of water — these vines survive totally exposed to the vagaries of nature. This white wine is oak-aged, spending eight months in second, third and fourth fill barrels. Cellar master Alastair Rimmer believes that wood is non-negotiable for adding depth and structure. The result is a brilliant Chenin Blanc, a real example of why South Africa is known to make the best Chenin in the world. There is the refreshment and liveliness that white wine lovers find so appealing — a brisk medley of yellow citrus fruits. This crisp, bright profile leads to underlying nuances of white pear, honeycomb and quince, with just a slight note of toasted hazelnut. A delectable, nectarlike sweetness coaxes the palate on the finish, attracting another full glass and further enjoyment of a humdinger of a white wine.

TASTE WINE

A memorable scent

It is weird to think that wines suffer from their names, and people’s ability to pronounce them. Take Gewürztraminer, the invigorating white grape from Alsace, Germany and Austria that does not enjoy the popularity it should due to the guttural sound one makes when pronouncing it. Jancis Robinson MW, arguably the world’s most respected wine critic, names Gewürztraminer as one of two wines in the world having the most recognisable aroma (the other is Sauvignon Blanc). And anyone who has put their nose in a glass of Gewürztraminer can concur — the scent of litchi drifts towards the senses, complemented by heavenly aromas of rose petals and, yes, an obvious spiciness. Delheim, situated in the beautiful Knorhoek-valley in the Simonsberg, is one of the few wineries in South Africa to grow and vinify this variety. Seeing that Delheim’s pater familias, the late Spatz Sperling was

92_Wine.indd 94

of German descent, the presence of this cultivar is to be expected. Only some 94ha of Gewürztraminer vines are found in South Africa’s total vineyard space of 90 000ha, and those of us who love this grape sure wish there was more. Delheim Gewürztraminer 2019 hit the market recently, and as usual, I commandeered a batch, pronto. During the making, the focus is on capturing the zest and life of those characteristic floral and spice flavours. Thus, all fermentation and maturation are in stainless steel to bring the essence of the grape to the bottle. The result is a life-affirming white wine with prominent hints of grapefruit, litchi, pineapple and white flowers supported by a firm acidity which prevents the wine from becoming cloyingly sweet. You taste sun and ripe grapes. You see bees buzzing around heavy bunches of fruit and taste summer in every glass. It’s a beautiful wine.

WINE TASTE

Don’t forget the reds

Of course, with most of lockdown occurring over the winter months, some serious red wines were chosen for research, all for the purpose of increasing knowledge and gaining insight. I found a wonderful Shiraz from a newer offering in the region of Franschhoek. The 12 Mile Limited Release Syrah 2017 originates from the expansive range of wines under the auspices of the Old Road Wine Co. which has a nifty tasting centre and restaurant as you enter the town of French Huguenots, croissants and monuments. The influential Wine Advocate recently rated this Old Road Wine Co. 12 Mile Shiraz among its 10 Best Wines from South Africa, so along with my current Shiraz fixation, it was worth checking out. Shiraz has been an anomaly to me. One of the best South African wines I have ever had, KWV’s Perold 1998 was made from this Rhône variety grown on the slopes of Paarl. However, the memories of the very good Shiraz wines to cross my palate – Boekenhoutskloof, RR Melck from Muratie, Boschkloof, Porseleinberg – have been tarnished by the vast oceans of inferior, bitter, metallic offerings that the Cape has been pumping out ever since we went crazy for Shiraz in the 1990s. The 12 Mile Limited Release Syrah 2017, thankfully, reminded me of the true beauty this variety is capable of expressing. Aged for 18 months in second and third fill French oak, the colour is black-purple with ruby edges. The nose has the anticipated notes of spice, but this does not obscure the very intense perfume of fresh-cut violets, fig-paste, and just a tad of cigar-box. Liquid velvet is the first impression as the wine drifts between the lips, polished and refined as a Delft vase shaped by the gifted touch of a master craftsman. It is juicy and delicious and rich. Oozing clods of tightly-packed blackcurrant meet rivulets of scented pomegranate syrup and rosewater; a meaty grip of muscular tannins lifts the mid-palate, while a harmonious spread of succulent plums, crab apples and white peppercorns closes the first sip with a flourish. I hope that when everything is ready, we can confidently say: the bar is open.

Eikendal Rosé 2020 Origin: Stellenbosch www.eikendal.com

There’s a “new sheriff in town” at beloved Stellenbosch winery, Eikendal, and winemaker Maryke Botha is already generating waves with her Eikendal Rosé 2020, which won gold medal at the most recent Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge. The wine—Maryke’s first-ever as full winemaker—is a Merlotdriven blend with characterenhancing hints of Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. This flirtatiously hued rosé boasts a flavour profile of red berries, candyfloss, and rosewater, with a gentle yet lively, crisp, and refreshing acidity. Available at R125 per bottle.

quite as devastatingly as South Africa, the only country in the world to have imposed bans on liquor sales and exports during COVID-19 lockdown. Betwixt the vines and within the country’s 500+ ferment-fragranced cellars, however, 290000 employees continue to work to produce the glorious elixir for which our country is known and loved. And the silver lining to all of this—as faint as it may seem—is that, with the bans now lifted, we have a prolific number of newly released wines to explore!

BLAAUWKLIPPEN ‘DE BLAAUWE KLIP’ 2017 Origin: Stellenbosch www.blaauwklippen.com

The most recent addition to the Blaauwklippen family is a classic five-way Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot by winemaker Narina Cloete. Paying homage to the distinctive blue-grey granite that gave the 338-year-old farm its original name, De Blaauwe Klip 2017 has a rich nose of dark cassis and cigar box, with plummy chocolate pudding notes, and a vibrant yet velvety palate. This premium red wine has an ageing potential of 20 years. Available at R195 per bottle.

ROODEBERG RESERVE 2017 Origin: Paarl www.roodeberg.com

Roodeberg is a true stalwart of the South African wine industry and with a long-standing, international reputation for velvety Cabernet Sauvignondriven red blends, Roodeberg’s newest release has much to live up to. But boy does it ever! The Roodeberg Reserve 2017 is an artful blend of eight grape varieties (48% Cabernet Sauvignon) by winemaker Louwritz Louw, delivering voluptuous layer-upon-layer of red plum, blueberries, crushed herbs, and tobacco leaf with hints of dark chocolate and soft, silky tannins. Available at R165 per bottle.

Survivor Chardonnay 2019 Origin: Elgin www.survivorwines.com

Black Elephants ‘Rosé Rebel’ 2020 Origin: Franschhoek www.bevintners.co.za

In the spirit of creating wine with a profound sense of place winemaker Ben Snyman sought cooler pastures for the most recent vintage of Survivor Chardonnay 2019. And few pockets of terroir are better for producing elegant Chardonnay than Elgin. The new barrelfermented Survivor Chardonnay 2019 portrays its cool climate pedigree with a crisp liveliness and intense citrus and peach bouquet with floral undertones. The palate is fruity with mouthfilling richness from contact with the lees and has a lingering finish.

One can always expect the unorthodox with the Franschhoek-based winery Black Elephant Vintners, and their new rosé release is no exception. Best paired with ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ by The Boomtown Rats, the Rosé Rebel 2020 is crafted from the freerun juice from Pinotage, and so it offers a heady dose of structure and fruit right up-front. Of particular note is the wine’s colour, which, according to the self-proclaimed “rebels of the vine,” is rosé colour perfection incarnate.

Vondeling Barrel Selection Merlot 2017 Origin: Paarl www.vondelingwines.co.za

Paul Giamatti’s character Miles’ distaste for Merlot in the 2004 movie ‘Sideways’ may have maligned this varietal in the eyes of popular culture. But Vondeling’s new Barrel Selection Merlot 2017 by winemaker Matthew Copeland is working hard to earn the grape its prestige back, with a Michelangelo Gold Medal and a four-star Platter rating under its belt. This 100% Merlot from the three-century-old Vondeling Wine Estate in Paarl is a vibrant, dark ruby red in colour, has a spectacular nose of black cherry, sweet raspberry, and aromatic lavender, and a smooth and soft palate of juicy red berry fruit, sweet liquorice, and fine tannins.

ELGIN VINTNERS ‘BELLE AMIE’ BLANC DE NOIR 2020 Origin: Elgin Valley www.elginvintners.co.z a

As if lying nestled between fruit orchards in the natural amphitheatre of the Kogelberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges weren’t romantic enough, the historic Elgin Orchards farm has now released the seductive Elgin Vintners ‘Belle Amie’ Blanc de Noir 2020. Elgin is the coolest wine-growing appellation in South Africa, and so one can expect great things from this elegant, dry style blanc de noir blend of Merlot and Shiraz. A beguiling pale salmon in colour, the ‘Belle Amie’ 2020 features a clean, fruit-forward nose of strawberry, candyfloss, and cranberry and a palate of red berries, sherbet, and racy acidity. Available at R130 per bottle. (available in 1.5-litre magnums, too).

Paserene ‘Elements Bright’ 2019 Origin: Franschhoek www.paserene.com

From the small, family-operated Franschhoek winery of Paserene comes the “Elements Range”, a collection of wines that are crafted as an ode to the terroir from whence its constituents originate. The Elements Bright 2019 is a 100% Chardonnay wine with a deep straw green colour and a delightful nose of citrus notes, white orange blossoms, orange zest, and a chalky minerality, followed by a soft, yet broad and dense mouthfeel. Paserene comes from the Latin word Passeriformes, which are the order of “travelling and free” birds like swifts and swallows. Available at R130 per bottle.

Neethlingshof Estate Range 2020 Origin: Stellenbosch www.neethlingshof.co.za

In the world of wine, Ken Forrester is a proven Chenin Blanc superstar. But now, a new star child in the Ken Forrester brood has stepped into the limelight, and it’s ‘The Gypsy’ 2015, a glorious and untamed Rhône-style blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. This very concentrated, free-spirited wine delivers layers of deep red fruit and a somewhat wild character of brambles, as well as hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, dark spices, and vanilla. From the estate’s Icon Range, The Gypsy 2015 just recently won the Grand Cru National Champion Best in Class and a Double Platinum Award at the National Wine Challenge/ Top 100 SA Wines.

Within the historic, centuries’ old cellars at Neethlingshof Estate in Stellenbosch, the team isn’t just welcoming the arrival of one new wine to the fold, but five. The new 2020 estate range consists of a crisp, fresh and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc; a mouth-filling tropical and stone fruit Chenin Blanc; a refreshing, ruby grapefruit, strawberry, and Fynbos-nosed Rosé (pictured below), a citrusy, balanced and easy drinking unwooded Chardonnay; and a full, rich, plummy, and savoury-kissed Malbec…all by talented winemaker De Wet Viljoen. Boland Cellar MCC Origin: Paarl www.bolandcellar.co.za

Raise your flutes to Boland Cellar’s very first Méthode Cap Classique! This maiden vintage of Brut MCC completes the progressive Paarl estate’s specialised Chenin Blanc portfolio and really highlights the versatility of this grape varietal. This classically elegant sparkling wine is made according to the traditional French bottle fermentation method, but using Chenin Blanc grapes rather than the usual Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The wine delivers complex expressions of creaminess and oat biscuit flavours, laced with stone fruit, tropical and guava fruits, fresh green apple, and a bright minerality. As South Africans, we’ve been given an invitation to rediscover our beloved country, so I’ve shortlisted eight of my top luxe stays that are eager to show that local is luxuriously lekker.

LABOTESSA, CITY CENTRE While a dazzle of glitzy hotels hugs Cape Town's shoreline, my top choice is a relative newcomer - but one of the most impressive hotels I've visited in the country. In the historic heart of the city, I invite you to encounter a discreet elegance unlike anything else: Labotessa. Set on the city's scenic Church Square, is a 17th-century heritage building transformed into a high-end boutique hotel with seven suites. With a highly-experienced hospitality record, owner and manager Johan du Plessis has clearly seen enough to know what works; every box is ticked - with a few you never knew even existed. The ground floor features a charming café and

Each of the six glamourous Signature Suites has direct and controlled elevator access, and with glorious city views the Presidential Suite is the property's crowning glory spanning an impressive 310sqm. Labotessa is a reminder that small is by no means insignificant, and as travel resumes, smaller boutique offerings will be first preference for many. This extraordinary property's refurbishment has come with mindful respect to the buildings 1700s heritage and is the closest I've ever felt to a European hotel in South Africa. labotessa.com

QUOIN ROCK, STELLENBOSCH Stellenbosch's Quoin Rock wines and famed eatery Gåte are already of such high distinction that it's almost imaginable that, for discerning guests in need of a hideaway, the property has another surprise. A private drive takes you to the uppermost slopes of Simonsberg, to Quoin Rock's Manor House, which safely clinches the spot as my most desired Winelands escape. Everything about the Manor House, from décor, service, garden to location – all confer an air of sophistication, a feeling as if you've truly left earth for heaven. The Manor House departs from the avant-garde styling of the winery below and embraces the Cape Dutch heritage with timeless and classical elegance. The austere grandeur of the property does not come at an expense to its provenance. Both the architecture and extensively

manicured gardens continuously point to the exterior; a fitting tribute to Simonsberg Mountain which rises so proudly behind. At its heart, Quoin Rock hospitality speaks to the essential desire to be understood. With a carefully hand-picked team, your needs are often met before having them voiced. When you're not dining at Gåte, your private chef will make sure your every culinary need is surpassed. The Manor house is available for exclusive use up to 14 guests. quoinrock.co.za/manor-house

THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL, UMHLANGA If you've visited this iconic Umhlanga's establishment, you'll understand why it has just been awarded the number one resort hotel in Africa by Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards. An ode to seaside-luxury in one of the finest locations to lap up the sunshine and enjoy year-round bathing. This grand dame of an establishment had her humble beginnings in 1954 followed by the legendary Tollman family purchase in the late 2000s, she received a facelift and a rather impressive wardrobe change. The iconic red and white striped pool-scene sits just above the trendy Umhlanga promenade and is flanked by

the similarly toned lighthouse. Make sure to also indulge in a visit to the Spa where the Hamman is every bit impressive as it is relaxing. I'd recommend you follow this with a green tea, slowly sipped from the comfort of your ocean-facing veranda. You'd best come hungry to The Oyster Box as there are a selection of dining spaces on offer, each presenting persuasive menu options from sushi, to pizza and seafood to curries. Unmissable is the hotel's wellloved High Tea experience, served on High Tea stands tableside. The lavishly tropical Palm Court is the setting for this daily sweet spectacle, which includes live piano music. oysterboxhotel.com

At six o'clock the bell rings, and G&Ts are served on the veranda of the gracious Manor House. A little later guests are escorted to their tables where the chef talks you through the evening's enticing meal which is not only seasonal but varies daily depending on what is available. After several courses of fine dining, it's soon apparent why Hartford House offers possibly the pièce de resistance of KZN's dining scene.

Accommodation is offered in rooms in the Manor House, Heritage verandah rooms, free-standing garden suites or in luxury lakeside suites. In an area often touted as the last British outpost, you can expect to find the humble charm, gentle hills and polite hospitality so intrinsic to the area's English namesake. Hartford House is proudly set on Summerhill Equestrian Farm, one of the country's most prominent thoroughbred stud farms – only a stone's throw from Mooi River. When you're not strolling the magnificent gardens of the greenhilled property, a myriad of small craft shops and other curiosities await you on the Midlands Meander. PRANA LODGE, CHINTSA

The Wild Coast

The Wild Coast must surely be the Eastern Cape's pride, with pristine, untouched beaches, and dunes and cliffs that rise from inland and then tumble dramatically into the ocean. In the cosy Chintsa, enjoy a game drive at Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, a beer tasting at Emerald Vale Brewery or a beach outride with Wild Coast Horse Riding Adventures.

While the tropical forests of the Eastern Cape's Wild Coast conceal many a secret hideaway, there's one luxury staycation that deserves mention. Barely 30-minutes from East London's airport you'll discover Chintsa on the accessible end of the Wild Coast stretch. Prana Lodge is a five-star establishment and the minute you drive through the gates you'll know you're in for something special. The eight luxury and incredibly spacious suites

each boast a private garden and plunge pool and are connected to the lodge through a series of enchanting walkways which wind gently through the dune forest. When the ocean beckons, it's a short walk to the 17-acre private beach estate. Prepare for an understated elegance that is surprisingly at home in the middle of the forest. Both the dining and spa experiences are in keeping with the refined ethos of the lodge. No wonder guests travel from so far to experience it. pranalodge.co.za

Kruger National Park

One of South Africa's most prized assets is our wildlife heritage. With no shortage of slick lodges to choose from in Kruger's wildlife mecca, make sure that you pick from the best as you take in the wildlife haven.

Kids are welcome and will revel in &BEYOND's WILDchild programme. For the conservation-curious, there's even the possibility of participating in a Rhino notching experience (the darting then tagging of a Rhino via chopper for research and security purposes). Remember that one of the beauties of a luxury safari is that not only are all meals included; your activities are also planned out without requiring any effort from you. Garden Route

The Garden Route is South Africa's much-loved green corridor, and two of its favourite towns offer chic stays in historic properties.

THE TURBINE HOTEL, KNYSNA The Turbine is a masterful embrace of both heritage and innovation. On Knysna's Thesen Island a decommissioned power station is now home to a quirky and classy five-star boutique hotel. Twenty-six individually appointed suites await to welcome you into their luxe sanctuaries; perfect for winding down in-between exploring the town and surrounding area. As a result of the eclectic industrial elements popping up, The Turbine possesses a distinctive funk that is aesthetically pleasing without detracting from the luxury stay. Of course, not only is the building a showstopper but equally the views out over the waterways. My suggestion is to request a room on a higher story and trust me, you won't want to leave your veranda. Through the Turbine Water Club, sunset cruises, boat rides or kayak are on offer. From an electric past to an eclectic present, The Turbine is an exceptionally unique stay that should be a firm feature on any Garden Route stay. turbinehotel.co.za

T

he Cape’s rugged topography, scalloped coastline, and Atlanticembraced peninsula are the outdoor enthusiast’s dream. With walking trails of every grade and challenge— through forest, vineyard, and fynbos or alongside roaring open ocean, sheer gorges, and mountain summits—it’s little wonder that hiking is as revered a local pastime as it is a tourist attraction. Now toss a little glamour, historical narrative, and delicious Cape wine and food into the mix and you’ve got a walk on the refined side you’ll always remember with the fondest of hearts…welcome to “the glamtrail!”

Step aside glamping: glamtrails are the new vogue!

Glamtrails are an exciting new tourism offering based in one of the Cape’s picturesque, vineyard-carpeted corners: the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The name translates most beguilingly into “heaven and earth” valley, a nod towards the area’s endless and beautiful landscapes and yawning skies. On offer is a bouquet of trails lead by experienced hiker, accredited mountain guide, and qualified first aider, Tim Lundy. Tim has been hiking the mountains of Cape Town for more than 30 years so he is fluent in the flora, fauna, history, geography and other jigsaw puzzle pieces that comprise its epic landscapes.

The glamtrail routes

At this time, there are five walking tours on offer and all promise to stimulate your senses, kick-start your blood circulation, and entertain and inform you of the area’s cornucopia of blessings:

OLD HARBOUR TO NEW HARBOUR This breezy 4.7 km, 2-hour stroll in the historic fishing and whalewatching town of Hermanus, kicks off at the town’s old harbour. Following the coastline, guests will pass several historical points of interest, ending at the new harbour with a fascinating tour of a working abalone farm and a tasting of its fruits!

FERNKLOOF TO BOUCHARD FINLAYSON This glamtrail is a 7 km, 4.5-hour walk through the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, known for its incredible wealth of fynbos vegetation, to Hamilton Russell, where you’ll stop for a wine tasting. From here, it’s a hop and a skip to the tasting rooms of Bouchard Finlayson and a much-deserved wine-and-food pairing.

CREATION WINE FARM TO ATARAXIA This 6.1 km circular route begins on Creation and leads guests through bucolic landscapes of vineyards, apple orchards, country roads, and dams to the winery at Ataraxia, where you’ll stop for a quick wine tasting. Then, it’s a short route back to Creation for a treat of a wine-andfood pairing.

Here, guests are treated to lunch at The Restaurant, an award-winning eatery with a well-deserved reputation for high-calibre food and stunning views.

DE BOS ESTATE IN HEMEL-EN-AARDE Last but certainly not least, is the 2.3 km, 1.5-hour trail in De Bos wine estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. This glamtrail, designed by legendary local botanist, Frank Woodvine, is centred around the rich diversity of fauna and flora found on the estate and offers sweeping views of the coast, ending with a picnic and wine at the Framehouse, a permanent glamping tent on the estate.

A rich, tapestried experience

Each glamtrail is a rich tapestry of historical narrative, spectacular views, invigorating nature, delicious food, and award-winning wines, for which the region carries a resounding reputation. BUSINESS CLASS

E

xecutive sedans have always been for a more serious, corporate, and sophisticated market. Over the last decade, however, the appeal has evolved to meet the needs of a far broader audience. The segment has had to adapt to keep a firm grip on their clients as well as roping in a few new ones as well. Audi has done wonders here with the A7 Sportback and has really knocked it out of the park.

BUSINESS AS USUAL While the A7 Sportback is as spacious as an executive sedan, its coupe design lends a much more energetic appeal. Its versatility is remarkable. The design is pure poetry to the eye. The exterior expresses Audi’s need and desire to always be the leader of the pack when it comes to setting trends. The singleframe grille married with the narrow headlights continues to contribute to a sporty presence on the tar.

Once you’ve flown business class, you won’t want to fly economy again. The same can be said of the A7. When stepping foot in the car, you could be forgiven for thinking an air steward will show up with some toasty towels, a newspaper and a flat white. The driver seat is comfortable. The large panoramic glass sunroof creates a sense of openness, while the slimline of the instrument panel produces a sense of open space. All the usual bells and whistles are fitted. The seats are super luxe, and you just melt into them, becoming one with the car.

A REAL POWERHOUSE The soft, subtle purr of the A7 is somewhat deceiving as there is nothing subtle about its performance. The A7 packs a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine under the hood. Kicking out 250kW. 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3sec, it’s rather formidable for an “executive sedan”.

PRICE TAG Business class does come at a price. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and you certainly get a lot here. For R1 298 000.00, the new Audi A7 55 TFSI Sportback Quattro S Tronic can be all yours. It comes standard with a 5 year / 100 000km Audi Freeway plan. SV

MOTORING MAZDA

A NEW LEVEL OF

class

The Mazda CX-5 blends luxury with adventure. BY VANN VAN STADEN

M

y best friend in high school, circa 2005, drove a 1.3l 2-door Mazda Soho. It was purple, and we loved it. Old faithful "Kriek" saw us through the best part of our school days. So needless to say, my first encounter with the Mazda brand was a good one, very memorable. Fast track to today and those happy feelings continue, this time in the form of the 'big boy' of the Mazda gang, the CX-5.

Everything you need

When it comes to the interior, there have been some exciting improvements since the first model was released. The leather seats have a plush feel to them, and a lot of attention has ensured that the driver experience is top priority. The dual-zone climate control has seen a facelift with a freshly designed and laid out air

Bigger is better

It comes as no surprise that the most searched car body type on Google is the SUV. Everyone is after something bigger and better. It's evident that size does matter when it comes to choosing your trusty metal steed. Mazda has answered many people's prayers with their contribution to the saturated SUV market. They have done it with a level of sophistication and class and have given us the refreshed CX-5. The first generation was launched back in 2012. Since then, we have seen some minor tweaks. With the latest revised CX-5 offering I am pleased to report that it's by far my favourite and has made it to the top five on my must-have SUV list.

luxury side, so I wouldn't rush to take it bundu bashing, but rest assured, it's more than capable to handle some dirt. Prices start from R427 200.00.

Diesel power

Lifetime of happiness

The Mazda CX-5 2.2L De Akera has reignited my pull towards diesel engines. Kicking out 140kW and 450Nm, there is plenty of fire under the hood. With this all-wheel drive instalment of the CX-5, you can pretty much take on any adventure. It's handling both on and off-road makes it a hearty contender in the SUV market. It leans more towards the

This has always been a gamechanger for me, and Mazda is, without a doubt, a leader in the industry when it comes to handing out warranties. In fact, Mazda offers a lifetime parts warranty. This is over and above their standard three year/unlimited km factory warranty. As soon as your standard warranty comes to an end, their Mazda Lifetime Parts warranty is an additional warranty that kicks in. There are, of course, some terms and conditions attached, but it is still one of the boldest offerings on the market. SV

NEED FOR

… & POWER Faster, better, louder — that’s the going theme here. BY VANN VAN STADEN

Y

ou’re sitting at a robot, patiently waiting for the light to go green, listening to the sweet sounds of Def Leppard and reminiscing on the good old days. All of a sudden, you feel a vibration running through your car. It’s a vibration coupled with the soft roar of an engine that makes the hair on your arms rise from excitement. You anticipate the empty lane next to you occupied with what can only be described as sheer exhilarating power. Your peripheral view finally sees some movement, and there she is a dynamo of metal, carbon and sheer horsepower ready to thrill. Who is she?! She is any one of the below powerhouses.

Audi TT

A couple of years back I drove the updated Audi TT Coupe. It was a bright citrus yellow colour. I climbed in and got a heavenly hug from this canary powerhouse, and that’s where the love affair started. Today we get to feel the love again. Audi released two revised models in the TT range towards the end of 2019. The Audi TT Coupe 45 TFSI S Tronic is up first, kicking out 169kW of

glorious power followed by the monster Audi TTS Coupe Quattro S Tronic that delivers an impressive 228kW of power. From a design point of view, Audi delivers as always. One of my favourite feature of the model has to be that there is no cap hidden under the petrol tank flap — just like track sports cars, you can insert the fuel nozzle directly into the opening. The nose of the TT boasts a very tidy yet sporty grill. The rear packs an awesome spoiler that’s been optimised for delivering aerodynamics at its best. In terms of price, the TT Coupe 45 TFSI S Tronic starts at R697 500.00, while the TTS Coupe Quattro S Tronic goes for R813 500.00.

Mustang

It comes as no surprise that the Mustang is the world’s best-selling sports car. This icon has also shared the big screen with some leading men and outshined most of its co-stars as well, most famously in Gone in 60 Seconds, both in the 1974 instalment and the 2000 remake co-starring Nicholas Cage. The latter triggered an influx of replica models being produced and sold for millions of rands. The leading car used for the 2000 movie sold on auction for a whopping $1 000 000.00 — not too shabby! Getting back to today’s version of the beloved Mustang, nothing much has changed. It still gets our engines roaring. The latest Mustang offering in South Africa is a four-cylinder and V8 model. The four-cylinder 2.3l Ecoboost engine produces 213kW and the V8 5L engine matches that and some at 331kW. Packing 19inch wheels, the 5.0l GT Fastback is the quintessence muscle car. This piece of American muscle can be all yours for a starting price of R833 900.00

dynamics and practicality has been at the forefront of this launch. As always, the F-Type is available in both coupe and convertible designs. This has to be one of the most dramatic sports cars out there. With a flair for marrying design with power, Jaguar is in a league of its own. There are three engine options available: a 2.0l four-cylinder P300 that kicks out 221kw of power; a 3.0l supercharged V6 P380 that delivers 280kW; and a 5.0l supercharged V8 F-Type R P575 that not only delivers an astonishing 423kW and 700Nm but also hits the 0-100km mark in 3.7 seconds. WHAT’S HOT BOOK CLUB

Book c INTO DARKNESS By Terry Goodkind

7 Ways By Jamie Oliver

Jamie’s done his homework and looked at the top ingredients we buy week in, week out. We’re talking about those meal staples we all pick up on autopilot - chicken breasts, salmon fillets, mince, eggs, potatoes, broccoli, to name but a few. We’re all busy, but that shouldn’t stop us from having a tasty, nutritious meal after a long day at work or looking after the kids. Jamie shares seven achievable, exciting and tasty ways to cook 19 hero ingredients and each recipe will have no more than 8 ingredients within it.

ANOTHER NOW By Yanis Varoufakis In a thought-experiment of startling originality, worldfamous economist Yanis Varoufakis blends an ancient form - the Platonic dialogue with speculative fiction to offer a glimpse of this alternative reality. Through the eyes of three characters - a liberal exbanker, a radical feminist and a maverick technologist - we see what would be needed to forge such a world, one without commercial banks or stock markets, where companies are collectively owned, and housing and income are guaranteed, but also at what cost.
