For the love of magic W The brand new Trollbeads concept store engages the senses with its cosy atmosphere and beautiful beads. ith humble beginnings in a small jewellery store in Copenhagen, Trollbeads has grown into a large, internationally celebrated collection of interchangeable pieces. Inspired by mythology, astrology, fairy tales, the natural world, and cultural diversity, the charm of the collection comes from the way that each piece can be personalised, so that every item tells a personal story. In October, Cape Town welcomed its very own Trollbeads concept store at Canal Walk. Here’s what to expect…
STEP INSIDE Inspired by the Scandinavian term “hygge” – a feeling of cosiness – the concept store is designed to have a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Daniella Gornall of Trollbeads explains that the idea behind the store is that one should feel the magic that exists in the unique pieces when they visit: “Our pieces are small works of art that need to be discovered through
touch and play. You really need to twist and turn them in order to find the beads that embrace your story and discover the magic.” Whether you’re on the lookout for a bracelet, necklace, earrings or beads to add to your collection, the concept store is about taking time to choose something personal in a relaxed space.
EXPLORE THE COLLECTION The latest offering from the Trollbeads range is the “Winter Wonder” Collection, which is inspired by sharing. To give is to share love. To share is expressing feelings. People are made of stories – and stories get even stronger when you share them with someone you love. Show love and appreciation. Celebrate life and each other. As summer comes, we dream of hot days, family fun and Christmas spirits. This is the time of year, where we cosy up outside by the braai and just enjoy the moment. Trollbeads’ “Winter Wonder” collection gives you the opportunity to live, share
and tell your personal stories together with the ones you love. “The combination of originality, creativity, very high quality, and a love for quirkiness is what makes Trollbeads different from other jewellery brands” says Daniella.
MAKE A MEMORY The Trollbeads brand centres largely around the concept of memory, says Daniella. She explains: “We believe that the urge to collect is a basic instinct. Our whole life is built from memories and Trollbeads gives you the chance to symbolically carry these memories with you or just to have fun with them. The idea behind the pieces is that you can build your own story by adding the beads the way you want to. You can collect a bracelet entirely from beauty, diversity and colours that fit your style, personality or memories.” SV

Indulge your senses and familiarize yourself (if you aren’t already) with these three artists. Each unique in chosen medium, focus and talent, and transcend beautifully on canvas.
GAWIE JOUBERT Gawie Joubert has an exquisite eye for detail, and it’s this talent paired with his strong passion for the word ‘art’ and everything that comes with it that allows him to transform his thoughts and ideas onto paper in such an intriguing manner. Born in 1988, from KZN, he spent hours as a child foraging in forests and other natural settings storing long-lasting picture memories which he today refers back to in his moments of focus and expression. Vines, leaves, shrubbery and the odd inclusion of a bloom or two make up most of his masterpieces and speak of his connection with the outdoors and the intense ‘now’ understanding, and sometimes misunderstanding, of his own sexuality, emotions and physical body. Pen, pencil and charcoal are his go-to mediums, and what a pleasure it is to see his work quite literally come to life. ART WHAT’S HOT
MAKIWA MUTOMBA Born in Zimbabwe, now based in South Africa, Makiwa Mutomba highlights the everyday, sometimes unnoticed, bursts of happiness in our daily lives including pieces that highlight women and children, and for diversity he adds a few wildlife pieces too. He focuses purely on joy and intensity, and depicts them perfectly in the use of his bold and bright colours. His passion started as a young child with simple drawings, and quickly progressed throughout the years to include oil paint variations. Makiwa gains most of his inspiration from general happenings of life and often uses photographs to reference back to when putting paint to paper. Instead of a paintbrush he regularly refers to a palette knife where he applies thick paint lines and splotches which he then leaves to dry naturally with very little interference. He has won several accolades throughout his career including winner-status of the SNBA, an exhibition of international artists in Paris, France. To view some of Makiwa’s work visit The Cape Gallery in Church Street, Cape Town www.capegallery.co.za

JAMES DE VILLIERS James de Villiers is well-known amongst avid art enthusiasts; he has exhibited widely in the Western Cape over the last couple of years and in Gauteng regions since 1985. The influence of the Dutch, German and Flemish masters can clearly be seen in his landscape, still life, portrait and skyscape paintings. “My work is concerned with change, decay, destruction and the passage of time. It also specifically deals with the vulnerability and recovery of nature.” The artist’s latest body of work is concerned with thought processes, trance states and mythology, transferred to canvas by means of a paintbrush, and in printmaking using monotype and monoprint acrylic inks. Chaotic lines, grids and patterns transcend perfectly to the eye and leave your mind confused and blissfully content at the same time. A selection of James’ artwork can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

n a global world, where imported produce and exotic ingredients are readily available, it’s not everyday that you can trace each part of a meal to your local surroundings. At Foliage in Franschhoek, however, not only are ingredients locally produced, many of them are foraged from nearby forests, fields and rivers. Be it mushrooms, herbs, edible leaves or roots, chef and owner Chris Erasmus and his team are dedicated to finding food that is naturally available in the fields and farms nearby. The restaurant team spends time searching for food that can be transformed into beautiful, tasty meals, and are conscious always of their impact on the environment when selecting their ingredients. The result? Dishes that are unique, ethical, and, of course, an experience for the tastebuds.
Our ethos is to keep our paws green, our boots muddy and our ingredients ethically sourced.” What isn’t grown or foraged by the restaurant staff is sourced from small local suppliers and backyard growers, ensuring that all ingredients are fresh, and that it never has to travel far to get onto the plate. This sustainable approach to sourcing ingredients is in line with global food trends, where businesses are increasingly paying more attention to their environmental impact and focusing more on ethical practices.
THE INSPIRATION According to chef Chris, the inspiration behind the restaurant is to “celebrate the great local Franschhoek forests, rivers, farms and local gardening enthusiasts.

RESTAURANTS: FOLIAGE WHAT’S HOT
Pay a visit Located at 11 Huguenot Street in Franschhoek, Foliage is open for lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. Lunch: 12h00 – 15h00 Dinner: 19h00 – 21h00 To make a reservation, call 021 876 2328 or email restaurant@foliage.co.za
THE VIBE The atmosphere of the restaurant, says Chris, is “fun dining with a conscience.” He describes the space as relaxed, but vibey, and the open plan kitchen contributes a bit of theatre to the place. The art and interior is curated and designed by Ilse Schermers, the owner and curator of the Is Art Gallery next door, a beautiful space that leads right through the restaurant's door. Guests are able to move between the spaces, and the gallery exhibits work from local artists. Exposed brick, wood and leather detail in the restaurant give the interior a trendy, but rustic, and comfortable feel. In winter, guests can expect a cosy vibe thanks to the big fireplace, while in summer seating spills out onto the street, giving the place a laid back charm, and guests the chance to soak up the energy of the town.
THE FOOD The offering at Foliage includes loads of foraged greens and unusual cuts of meat. While the menu changes depending on the ingredients that are available, Chris says that wild herb salads and beef hump feature often. Always on a mission to create dishes that use fresh, local flavours, the team barters with surrounding wine, animal and
vegetable farmers for ingredients. “We search the rivers, meadows, forests and mountains for fynbos, edible greens, ferns, and mushrooms. The whole team joins in and we learn and grow from each other,” says Chris. Because the ingredients change all the time, it’s possible to try something different on every visit to the restaurant, and the flavours are always interesting and original with dishes like the warm salad, made with charcoal roasted beetroot, broccoli, sorrel yoghurt, and 19-year-old vinegar dressing. There is also a smoked beef crackling loaf with butter; and a smoked cheesecake, served with spiced tomato vinaigrette, sunflower, pea shoot and wild cress salad, while dried foraged mushrooms also feature in some of Chris’ creations. Other foraged greens include waterblommetjies, watercress flowers, ferns and milk thistles, and many of the ingredients are pickled and preserved. Sous chef Nick Oosthuizen creates all the cheeses in-house with ancient techniques using wild roots like thistle and fig leaves, instead of animal rennet. The milk is sourced raw from a local school student, named Salmo, who delivers to the restaurant every morning. This young entrepreneur only has one cow, and Foliage is proudly helping him to save enough money for another. SV

LA PARADA The latest offering from the Harbour House group is the brand new La Parada at Constantia Nek. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant has sunny outdoor seating for warm summer days, and if the wind picks up, the eclectic interior is cosy and packed with atmosphere. The menu is influenced by the Spanish tapas style, but focuses on fresh local ingredients with an emphasis on beautiful presentation. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to tapas, so sharing is the perfect way to enjoy the variety of flavours – choose from options like charred octopus salad, beetroot cured salmon, roasted pork belly and prawn croquettes. There are also a number of veggie options – think roasted tomato salad, cauliflower puree, and thyme roasted butternut – as well as low carb, high fat choices. MARC’S TABLE If you’re looking for a fine dining experience with a bit of a fun twist, Marc’s Table is a great option. Located in the Sugar Hotel in Green Point, the restaurant is a modern, sophisticated space suited to a special occasion with friends, or a little romantic indulgence for two. While quality and flavour is certainly a priority, the menu is refreshingly simple and wholesome – think omelettes, scrambled eggs, homemade granola and french toast with seasonal berries for breakfast; and a range of comfort foods like herb roasted chicken, slow braised Moroccan lamb shank, and wild mushroom risotto for mains. Our best advice? Save space for dessert! You won’t want to miss the Cape malva pudding with amarula anglaise and gooseberry coulis. WEBSITE: www.marcstable.co.za PHONE: +27 21 430 3780

FABER Located on the picturesque Avondale wine farm near Paarl, the brand new Faber is a beautiful space reminiscent of a warm country home. Its farm setting provides the restaurant with the perfect opportunity to use fresh, organic vegetables from its very own garden, fruit from the orchards, and the eggs and free-range chickens are also sourced from the estate. The menu is simple and subtle, with a focus on artisanal-style dishes. Homemade breads, rolls and fritters start the dining experience, and mains like beef sirloin, Graaff-Reinet spring lamb, and butterroasted parsnips won’t disappoint. The dessert menu is small, but with options like cream cheese and honey sorbet with coconut crumble and blueberry macaron, and peanut butter cake, with strawberry jellies, and roasted peanut butter, choosing won’t be an easy task! rom the lush fynbos, amidst the silence of the mountains and the whispers of tall Ironwood trees, one would expect a fragile duiker to make its shy entrance across the sun-kissed terraced lawns. The sublime atmosphere and quality of the build is thanks to an ergonomic use of style, tastefully unostentatious, with hues of nature reflected in generous glass panels with soaring elevations and cleverly defined roof pitches. Reminiscent of a game lodge with artisanal stonework in tones of beige and soft grey alongside textured gravel and grey paving stone, the property moves forward into the new age with architectural features that reflect a love of all things green and woody. Views are panoramic and span across the Constantia valley towards the mountains from Devil’s Peak to Constantia Nek and Silvermine; and the blue sea of False Bay. The property is practical and solid on its flat stretches of ground with an expansive L-shaped oxygenated swimming pool that hugs the house with beautiful turquoise water, ideal for sweltering summer days. A luxurious covered patio, with enough space for the entire swim team, extends to a large deck with a judicious use of wood. The
space is shared with mature trees which provide gentle shade. Inside, the enormous double volume reception rooms, surrounded by glass panelled sides invite lazy, informal living, keeping an edge of sophistication through the use of neutral colours and visually appealing focal points. An interesting theme in the house runs along the lines of grey panels of wall space, offering a backdrop for spectacular works of art. Grey loves colour and invites the eye to linger longer. The living room allows gallery style viewing of a portrait from a distance, with low slung leisure seating, fitting carefully to the scale of the house’s larger dimensions. The brighter colours in the artwork are highlighted by the sweet, juicy colours in the lounge cushions and add visual excitement and variety. Double glazed glass panels, glass balcony and floating staircase all conspire to bring a seamless, breezy interior that is in harmony with its outdoor elements. A delightful absence of interior walls and of curtaining in the living areas works hard to bring clean, bright light into the home, but not without the cosy intimacy of warmth necessary for Cape winters. Italian closed wood burning fireplaces feature in the television and living areas and in the master bedroom too.

A techno smart, home-automation system operates the lights, the pool pump, the security and irrigation system, as well as interior blinds and roller shutters throughout the house. It’s also worth mentioning that the property’s eco-friendly 10KW photovoltaic/solar heating system is heat pump driven – so the property runs off solar power by day and is powered by wind turbine during the night. The economy and beauty of modern contemporary design translates into space for
furnishings such as beds, pedestals and bathroom units where items are hung above floor level. Bathrooms include wall hung vanity units in clean white for functional storage and style. Dimensions are elegant with a focus on the horizontal, adding to the streamlined effect of the wooden cladding detail on the walls. Showers are extra-large, the bath floats above the floor and down lighting is elegant and intimate - the whole effect is that of a five-star resort spa.

An Assirelli designed kitchen is crammed with modern conveniences: a SMEG oven, gas hob and extractor, plus microwave and convection oven. The three-dimensional quality of items is concealed from view within the wall space. It’s a ‘lifestyle’ kitchen in the true sense of the word, with a suspended ceiling, kitchen island and wraparound countertop that forms a platform from which to entertain. The design is inclusive, meaning guests and the head chef alike are invited to collaborate in a new era of creative cooking, combining culinary showmanship and entertainment. So, you can play celebrity chef all you like. At the very least, this is a kitchen space to enjoy with the whole family. More formal dining is catered for with an elongated tenseater dining-table where you and your guests can enjoy a bottle of wine and stargaze with uninhibited views of the night sky. All the bedrooms are big on space and enjoy private entrances to balconies and lawns that supersede the bedrooms by extending the view further out towards endless horizons. The master suite and its adjacent Galliano style dressing room are a beauty - the dressing room provides storage designed for superfluous excess and exciting hedonism. Décor is kept simple for a good reason. Simplicity is key because uninterrupted views are what this home is all about. Luxurious, thick pile carpeting in neutrals does add warmth and absorb sound, and concealed built-in cupboards slide open, for super practicality. Quirky details add character to the house. A suspended home office hangs elegantly within triple volume glass, amongst the trees, with a transparent glass balcony and a neat set of workspaces that ensures a great workflow and inspired views. This special addition works by adding a thrilling sense of space and beats the feeling of being boxed into an office by miles. There’s also a private wine cellar for that special, rare collection and garage space for three cars as well as extended parking for an ephemeral gathering of guests. This is truly open plan living at its best that rounds up the indoors with sprawling spaces that enable sociability, convenience and the type of modern living that home owners want more of. The space is tempered with clever solutions to conceal and store everyday items for tidy, easier living. Different open plan zones are easily accessible and shareable and at the same time there’s space for privacy. Here, every door leads to the garden, giving access to beautiful countryside imaginings and an absolute freedom of movement in the true spirit of living. splendid creation by award winning Cape Town based architect Jenny Mills of Jenny Mills Architects, the property is both exciting and beautiful - as Jenny puts it “We are artists on a quest to sculpt spaces in co-operation with nature. A big part of this excitement is the element of surprise. Visitors who initially may have expectations of Cape Dutch magnificence are greeted by a polished wooden walkway leading to the entrance of the house framed by a beautiful set of oversized double barn style doors with studded detail found in the East. The exterior of the house is all whitewash and thatch with closely hewn hedging, topiary and silvery French lavender in a pretty garden setting. Inside, a double volume thatch ceiling and crisp white plaster instantly puts this house into the extraordinary category. Entry to the house reveals the true beauty of timeworn wooden floors and the absence of ceilings with interestingly stitched thatch demands closer inspection. One feels instant, cool relief from the heat of the Cape sun that only real wood and thatch can provide. Kilim wall hangings and an oversized chandelier emphasize grandeur, and silver candelabras on a varnished wooden table and a crystal decanter suggest casual sophistication.
An authentic fireplace and a useful woodpile provide a warm focus for cooler weather with a sweeping chimney flue that accentuates the height and grandeur of the room with access to an interesting upstairs balcony. Neutral Kilim rugs bear the weight of overstuffed couches in large flamboyant florals for country chic, but it is the interesting use of wooden side tables, tribal masks
and wooden platters that lend African overtones to the setting. The open plan living area bears a chunky wooden dining table that is clearly the handiwork of an artist of sorts with a set of accompanying wicker chairs. Texture is successfully put to work. An eccentric wooden ladder is evident at the door, quaintly crooked and charmingly authentic and reveals the personality of the

inhabitants of the house. The area is designed around the kitchen, typically the heart of this home. Not quite a Cape house, the delight of the unexpected makes a truly wonderful appearance in the bedroom and bathroom dĂŠcor. The double bed with its soft canopy and cotton linen with horizontal stripes accentuate antique side tables and a wooden kist with its Eastern embellishments and decorative hinges. Soft brass lampstands add texture and the Eastern island-style look is complete with greenery from indoor foliage. All the rooms have beautiful views. The architect has intended the flow of living to adapt to smaller and more personal spaces and expands to the full house, incorporating the guest rooms also. Smaller breakaway spaces offer delicious respite from the weather, with comfy reed and wicker seating and louvre door shutters that filter the sun and wind. High-gloss varnish takes wooden furniture to a sophisticated level with edgy style. These small details create a polished environment.

Outdoor living is accentuated with the geometry of pavers planted up with foliage, inspired by French gardens, to complement the beauty of the landscape. Roller blinds offer protection from the elements with the opportunity for meals taken outdoors with views of the swimming pool and beyond. A his and hers bathroom with natural stone cladding and wooden dressing room with floating vanities provide a beautiful contrast with soft lighting and ever-practical storage space. These elements spell luxury and are captivating. Wicker, wood, mirrors and white walls convey promise of a sensual, tactile experience. And the bathroom lives up to that promise as the curious onlooker discovers. Transparent views to the outdoors with the privacy
of a stone feature wall and trees with greenery offer an exquisite outdoor spa experience, but indoors. A reed matting splash-back and two strikingly detailed pendant lamps suspended over the floating tub are enough to strike bliss in the heart of bathers. For more bathing, the outdoor swimming pool area is reminiscent of a Balinese beach resort with its bamboo and thatch canopy and interesting wooden furniture from abroad. Reed screen detail provides ultimate shelter on windy days and is true to island-style design. The blue pool matches the sky and forms the backdrop and the foreground to this beautiful home with the mountain in the distance. Collections of art and unusual objects celebrate country living in Franschhoek at its finest. SV

ndoor-outdoor living has never been more popular and for that reason alone, patio furniture’s multi-functional status is hotter than ever. Consider applying these upcoming style trends for a gorgeous update on your patio for a space where the different seasons mingle with minimal fuss.
DARING COLOUR The official Pantone 2017 colour trend palettes have hit the shelves, extending far beyond the floors of fashion and fabric, flourishing in the outdoor/indoor patio décor arena also. Expect beautiful shades of very pale dogwood pink, neutral hazelnut and kale green and vibrant flame orange, hot pink and vivid lapis blue, combined with primrose yellow.
64 Patio Feature.indd 66
FABRIC FUN It’s going to be a playground for the brave sun-lover. Add your own flourish to an outdoor set and make it more personal with prints and patterns for detail and colourful contrasts that pop. Think stripes, lots of ombre, watercolours, botanicals, animal prints and tropical graphics. Embellishments like stitching and colourful piping are big, especially for more classic, understated furniture – the luxury is in the detail.

MIXING IT UP We’re seeing so many unusual seating alternatives: the outdoor backed beanbag, picnic benches, the structured pouf has made a flamboyant comeback with varieties that double-up as tables, oversized bolster cushions in chunky knits, the circular sofa and most prevalent as a practical solution, built-in concrete seating with textured upholstery. Tweak your outdoor look and combine more formal seating with low-slung, informal outdoor pieces for a look that’s nice and cohesive.
FEELING TEXTURE Exciting light and dark wooden and woven textures are absolute favourites this season. But so
are sturdy base colours such as brown and charcoal which tolerate different multi-step finishes, mimicking the beauty of real wood and different metals. These faux finishes are ideal for volatile Cape weather. Basket weave textures are getting lots of attention – they’re multi-coloured, multi-cultural and braided for fun in exciting new materials.
TAKE THE FLOOR Charcoal, tones of grey and brown push the boundaries of outdoor flooring and open new doors for creativity. Harsh South African light works this look all the way and we’re seeing a rise in composite decking with many options in these tones: an eco-friendly,

durable, all weather blend of recycled timber, bamboo, polypropylene and bonding agents, ideal for small and large areas and there’s no maintenance necessary. beautiful when accompanied by pretty seashell and contrived fish prints are at large. Oversized lanterns, large sailor stripes and dollops of peachy coral set the scene for an ever pleasing mood that maintains its lively style. It’s remarkably effective paired with lots of wooden slats and large beach umbrellas. Look for crockery to match and you’ll find a host of lovely things – think Royal Yacht Club, Delft china and two tone ceramics. SV
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS It’s all going breezy, spacious and relaxed. Minimalist furniture is still versatile and timeless, though consider mixing and matching it in different configurations for a little unexpected visual relief. Patio screening has a new look and while offering privacy, incorporates textual elements with a semitransparent feel. Free-flowing linen panels, reed and pole screens all help create casual, outdoor ‘beach’ appeal that celebrates the great outdoors and languid days in the sun.
BIG ON BOHEMIA The skilful mixing and matching of cultural items gathered from interesting travels both abroad and online is becoming a global trend. A worldwide interest in different cultures and artisanal handiwork is expected to intensify. North meets south and east meets west. The result? Playful accents – beads and bobbles and loads of texture, all hand rendered, are here to stay for a long time. That’s great news for sentimentalists and collectors!
THE BOARDWALK Good news for many – ocean themes are back with a vengeance, but with a sublime twist. Lovely toned denims that move to bottle green, bright indigo blue, sandy beige and ivory white are especially

RECHARGE YOUR ENERGY LEVELS
It’s natural to have highs and lows, but if you’re feeling drained all the time, here’s what you need to know. JENNIFER CAMPBELL
I
t’s completely normal for energy levels to fluctuate throughout the day, but if it feels impossible to get out of bed every morning, or you just can’t get through the afternoon without a double espresso, tweaking lifestyle factors like diet and exercise can go a long way towards ensuring better balance.
EAT YOUR ENERGY One of the simplest ways of maximising your energy is to make sure that you keep your blood sugar levels balanced throughout the day. According to registered dietician Lila Bruk, it’s a good idea to have regular snacks throughout the day, ideally eating every two and a half to four hours. Healthy, energy-boosting snacks include whole wheat crackers with cottage cheese, fresh fruit and yoghurt, seed bread with peanut butter, biltong and raw, unsalted nuts and low GI muesli. If you’re looking to beat the afternoon slump, Bruk suggests lunch options like chicken salad, low GI bread sandwich with
72 Motivation.indd 74

MOTIVATION WELLNESS
chicken and avo, tuna salad with baby potatoes or a whole-wheat pita with feta, hummus and roast veggies. A B-complex supplement is a natural energy booster, so consider adding one to your diet. Being well-hydrated also helps to improve energy levels, but if you don’t like drinking water, Bruk suggests setting small goals, like 100 ml every two hours, so that by the end of the day you’ve reached over a litre. She explains that the majority of the body's processes require water to function, so without enough water, digestion is slowed down and the metabolism is not able to function optimally.
STAY ACTIVE While it may feel like the last thing you feel like at the end of a long day, regular exercise can actually help to boost energy levels. Susan Johnston, director at Vivendi Wellness, explains that while it may be tough at first, regular exercise teaches our bodies to be more efficient in how much energy we use and so, with time, stamina and the ability to recover quickly from an exercise session improves. Another benefit, says Johnston, is that active people tend to sleep better at night. “Good quality sleep improves overall wellness and can lower stress levels. As well as these benefits, exercise improves your mood and sense of well-being, allowing you to feel better and more relaxed,” she says. If you’d like to incorporate exercise into your routine, but don’t know where to start, Johnston suggests starting off with an easy pace and increasing the intensity as and when your body can handle it. “Doing too much too soon can cause muscle strains, loss of lean tissue and plateaus in your fitness
levels,” warns Johnston. Also, it’s important to choose a form of exercise that excites and motivates you – try a hike in the forest, a fun Zumba class or a cycle with friends if a traditional workout doesn’t appeal to you. “At the end of the day, any form of activity that gets you moving, gets your heart rate up, and makes you feel happy to be exercising, is the one you should choose. Try out a few different types and find the one that suits you best. That in itself will give you energy and motivation to exercise,” says Johnston.
MASTER YOUR MORNINGS While lifestyle choices certainly contribute to healthy energy levels, new research shows that your genes determine whether you’re a morning person, or if you’re someone who has to continuously hit the snooze button. A study published in the journal Nature Communications earlier this year, found that a person’s tendency to rise early, or stay up late at night, comes down to particular genes. Interestingly, the study found that women and adults over the age of 60 are most likely to be morning people, and that there are a number of health benefits to possessing the “morning” genes. If you struggle to get up in the mornings, try and let in some natural light – open your curtains early, or sleep with them slightly open. It also helps to stick to a consistent sleep schedule so that your body gets used to the routine. Good quality sleep is essential to maintaining healthy energy levels throughout the day, so make it a priority by allowing yourself time to wind down in the evenings, take time out from digital devices and stay away from caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. WELLNESS STRESS
M
ost of us look forward to a break at the end of the year – the thought of long, lazy mornings, parties with friends, time spent away from work and responsibility, the chance to explore new places, and quality time with family, are the stuff of daydreams by the time November rolls around and the countdown to Christmas begins. But, all too often, this much-needed free time becomes stressful, when tensions rise, planning becomes overwhelming or anxiety about festive functions becomes too much. We chatted to an expert about how to manage stress levels and make the most of the holidays.
KEEP THE PEACE Counselling psychologist Kirsten Friis explains that family holidays can be stressful because families tend to spend more time together than they would during an average week. In addition, organising holidays and travelling can be stressful, so families
may find themselves feeling quite fragile before the holidays have even begun. “It is important to exercise tolerance and patience with one another. In anticipation, allow each family member to suggest some activities they would like to do over the holiday period and make a commitment to doing at least one activity that each person has suggested. Also allow for family members to spend some time apart during the holiday,” suggests Friis. Go for a walk alone or with your partner from time to time, for example, or take some time out to read a book when you need a break from the group. When it comes to hosting family and friends over the festive season, or planning a big get together or event, Friis suggests trying to not put additional pressure on yourself by trying to please everyone. “When hosting or organising an event, keep everyone's preferences in mind, but avoid asking everyone for their input as this could create a situation where people feel disappointed if their suggestions don't come to fruition. If there are people who would like to be

more involved in the planning, delegate tasks and duties to individuals. This helps to alleviate some of the stress placed on you, and it allows family members to feel more included in the planning and organising,” she says.
STAY CALM Parties, work functions, and get togethers with friends all might sound like fun, and for many people they are, but for those who suffer from social anxiety, these kinds of events can be very difficult to attend. “Try to find coping strategies for yourself that make events less anxiety-provoking such as attending with a friend, having conversations with individuals rather than in a large group, and even wearing comfortable clothes that you feel more confident in,” urges Friis. If social anxiety persists throughout the year, seek professional help – a psychologist or counsellor will be able to help you develop strategies for managing your anxiety in the long term.
AVOID LONELINESS While the holidays are often a time spent with loved ones, they can also be lonely for those who don’t have family members around. If you’re alone, try to be gentle with yourself during this time and give yourself permission to do the things you most enjoy – go to a market, make your favourite meal and hire a movie for a night in, take yourself out for coffee. “If the feelings of loneliness are uncomfortable try to avoid isolating yourself during the holidays – you'd be surprised at where the friendly faces pop up if you allow them to,” says Friis. But, it’s important to note that chronic feelings of loneliness may also be a sign of depression. If the feelings don't go away or seem to be getting worse it is advisable to speak to a psychologist or counsellor. You can also contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) between 8am and 8pm Monday to Sunday on 011 234 4837 or SMS 31393 if you feel that you need to speak to someone. SV

WINE FOR THOUGHT Whites and a pink to indulge in over the holiday season. EMILE JOUBERT
T
here is more than enough action on the South African wine scene in terms of things new, different and fresh, it is the tried-and-trusted classical stuff we do best. On the red wine side, the royal wine that is Cabernet Sauvignon which has always delivered and always will deliver the finest local reds. And when it comes to white grape varieties, South African Chardonnay is now recognised as the best in the so-called ‘New World’ with many international critics reckoning the best Chardonnays outside of Burgundy – ground zero for this grape – are indeed from our land down south. Many consumers, however, still baulk at the thought of Chardonnay. This thing happens when your first introduction to the variety has been through a glass of something cloyingly woody and confected in a butter-toffee sense. And when South Africa began experimenting with Chardonnay in the 1990’s, this overdone style of wine making was a feature of too many wines. The winemakers could somehow not help cloaking the wines in excess oak, and as a result lost many potential white wine customers who did not like their wine tasting of broken cricket bat and burnt log cabin. Fortunately this is no longer the case, over-oaked Chardonnays have gone out the fashion door along
with mullets and shoulder pads. Wines are now fresher and lean, pure and zesty. Those still suffering from Chardonnayitis could do well to get back into the groove with one of the very many good unwooded wines made from this noble grape. The De Wetshof Limestone Hill 2016 would be a good place to start, as this award-winning wine made from the vineyards growing on the chalky soils of Robertson offers all the complexity and depth of Chardonnay without the slightest hint of having as much as winked at an oak barrel. It is made in an uncomplicated, easy manner to ensure approachability and uncluttered drinking. The grapes are picked. The juice sits on the lees for between six and eight months to draw maximum fruit expression. And then bottled. No fuss. The result is a cool, life-affirming white wine expressing notes of citrus, white flowers and a

touch of lemon meringue. Well-chilled, it is my goto summer wine and a great partner to grilled fish, chicken salad and oysters. If your eye is on fashion, one would also have noticed the action on the front of blended white wines. In the old days blends were the result of doing something with the odds-and-ends left-over in the cellar. But today winemakers go about blending in a judicious and skilled manner, using the finest vinous elements to craft something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Doran Vineyards are in white wine central, namely the Voor-Paardeberg region north of Paarl and besides a really mean Chenin Blanc, Doran makes a tremendous white blend called Arya. In the 2015 version of this drink, Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne are combined to create a harmonious combination of splendid white grape features. When approaching this wine, do remember that 2015 is one of the greatest South African vintages ever, a fact that always tends to increase one’s appreciation of the wine at hand. Like the aforementioned Limestone Hill Chardonnay, Arya is unwooded. So apart from providing upfront life and brightness, the wine also gives one the opportunity to try a wine made from grapes that are, in the greater scheme of things, unusual. Chenin Blanc is well-known to many, but Grenache Blanc and Roussanne are southern French varieties that could be new
to palates weaned on the more popular spectra offered by Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. While the stony, mineral elements of Chenin are found in mounds, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne bring intriguing elements to the wine. Grenache Blanc always gives me a salty, marine-like influence, while Roussanne is herbaceous and airily green – like a walk along moss-lined mountain streams. The wine is pleasantly full and satisfying, dry and elegant with a splash of understated stone-fruit. Immensely quaffable, this wine is great with seafood and cream-based pastas. Summer would not be summer without rosé, and it is not just about the point of alluring differentiation offered by the colour. Drinking a well-made dry rosé is like jogging through a fruit orchard during a rain-storm, chewing a few berries along the way. Pinotage, South Africa’s national red grape, has proven to be a great base from which to make rosé and Delheim is a fine example. Its Pinotage Rosé 2016 cleverly uses the juice – that has received a touch of colour from the skins – in combination with a miniscule percentage of Muscat de Frontignan. Like all rosé, this Delheim needs to be served wellchilled to bring out the lip-smacking refreshment. The wine is full of crunchy berry fruit and plum, with a clean finish leaving just a hint of strawberry. The 4% Muscat does a sterling job of giving the wine a hit of exotic perfume and a floral presence, ensuring a summery sexiness on the finish. Great on its own as the sun sets – or rises – and the wine partners with spicy foods perfectly. Summer is, truly, on. SV

hether it’s a dinner party, a New Year’s bash, an indulgent Christmas lunch, or just a fun day out in the winelands, the taste of bubbly always adds to a sense of celebration. With so many quality bubbles produced in our own backyard, there’s every reason to crack open a bottle this festive season.
KNOW THE FACTS While we’re not legally allowed to produce ‘champagne’ in South Africa, our much-loved local bubbly is known as Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), and is made in the same technique as the French version that is produced in the wine region of Champagne. It’s made with grapes that are very low in sugar and pressed and fermented in the same way as ordinary wine, before it is bottled and capped. MCC is stored in a cellar anywhere between eighteen months to three years and turned regularly while the sugar and yeast continue to ferment and release carbon dioxide. Just before it’s corked, the yeast is removed from the bottom of the

bottle, and more sugar is added in preparation for the best part -- when it can be opened, poured and enjoyed! Sparkling wine, on the other hand, differs in terms of the process that is used, and has carbon dioxide added to it later in the process. The term Cap Classique is derived from the winemaking technique that was introduced to the Cape by the French Huguenots. South Africa’s first bottle-fermented sparkling wine, which was aptly called Kaapse Vonkel (Cape Sparkle), was produced in 1971 at Simonsig, and the technique has since grown in popularity, providing South Africans with a range of worldclass options and the perfect addition to any celebration!
TAKE A BITE Nothing quite says festive times like a bit of bubbly, particularly when paired with something tasty. Rich foods tend to soften and accentuate the acidity of bubbles, although most flavours actually go well with this versatile wine. Oysters are a classic choice, and canapés like sushi and sashimi, and light, fresh salads make a perfect pairing. It may seem an unlikely match, but oily foods like duck and certain kinds of fish also work well, while spicy curries also complement the flavour of MCC, particularly those of a sweeter style. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, it is said that fried mushrooms and MCC pair well because the earthiness of the mushrooms complements the fruity notes of a slightly sweet bubbly. The good news is that if you’re hosting a party, there are a lot of great menu options you can try – the main thing to consider is the particular style of MCC you’ll be serving and its sugar level, and match your foods accordingly. Balance your flavours so that one doesn’t overpower the other, and you’re bound for success!
GET SIPPING If the good weather and the holiday vibes have you feeling
thirsty, why not try a bubbly tasting or two this festive season? We’re spoilt for choice; the beautiful Constantia Valley – Klein Constantia does a fresh, fruity MCC brut while Beau Constantia’s Pas De Nom MCC is rich and ripe. In the Stellenbosch region, Simonsig offers a MCC and cake pairing (yum!), and, for the real sweet tooth, The House of JC Le Roux pairs their MCCs and sparkling wines with marshmallows and meringues. Further afield, the Robertson Wine Valley has loads of tasting options, including the wellknown Graham Beck, the beautiful De Wetshof Estate, and the wonderfully relaxed Weltevrede close to Bonnievale.
Black Elephant Vintners Brut Nestled in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, this independent company sources grapes from surrounding farms in the area. Their Brut MCC is a blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir, and has a fresh, fruity flavour -- think citrus, peach and honey. Tastings on the farm can be arranged most days, but be sure to book ahead. bevintners.co.za

FOR THE CONNOISSEURS The Franschhoek Valley is a treasure trove for winelovers, and the choice can be quite overwhelming if your time in the area is limited. One of the best ways to make sure you visit as many farms as possible is to take the Franschhoek Wine Tram. It’s a hop-on hopoff tour through vineyards in an open-sided tram, which stops at some of the area’s oldest and most well-known wine estates such as Le Lude, La Petite Dauphine, Holden Manz, La Bourgogne, La Couronne, Mont Rochelle, Rickety Bridge and Grande Provence.
There is a loop of stops and several route options, so guests are given time to go wine tasting, take a cellar tour, stroll through the vineyards or have lunch without rushing.
SOAK UP SOME CULTURE If a morning spent strolling through art galleries is your idea of a good time, you’ll love Franschhoek’s offering. In the town itself, don’t miss The Blue Lion Gallery, Art in the Yard, Is Art Gallery, the Moór Gallery and Roubaix House. The latter is the home

and studio of renowned potter David Walters, and the space is open to those interested in seeing the production of his studio ceramics. Out of town, several wine estates house galleries that are well worth a visit. The gallery at Grande Provence showcases work by both leading and emerging South African artists, while the La Motte Museum displays the work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, one of
the country’s most distinguished artists. There is also contemporary local art exhibited, and a historical and sculpture walk on the estate, where visitors can take a tour of the Cape-Dutch buildings and sculptures.
LEARN THE HISTORY For a glimpse of the town’s history, take a look at the Huguenot Memorial Museum in the main street. Also, the Huguenot Monument on the edge of town, was erected in 1945, and commemorates the Huguenot immigrants who settled in the area in the 1600s. It’s an impressive sight, with a sculpture of a woman by Coert Steynberg at its centre, which is said to represent the religious freedom the Huguenots found in South Africa. For history of a different kind, the Franschhoek Motor Museum offers visitors the opportunity to look back at more than a hundred years of motoring history with its unique collection of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and memorabilia in the magnificent setting of L’Ormarin Estate.

If you’re feeling adventurous, and are keen to leave the quaint streets in favour of the great outdoors, there are a number of biking and walking trails in the area. The Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve just outside of town has a few hiking routes, ranging from seven to 15 kilometres, all of which offer amazing views. There are also a number of companies that can arrange wine-tasting on horseback -- the perfect way to take in the scenery of surrounding orchards and vineyards. Several farms in the area offer trout fishing in their streams and dams, and bicycles are available for hire for the more energetic travellers. SV

rom the sound of salsa music and the smell of tobacco, to vintage cars, and picture-perfect beaches, Cuba is alive with energy. Step back in time and experience a country with an intriguing history and distinctive style. If you’re open to the island’s contradictions and eclectic mix of old and new, you’re in for a trip that’s bound to be filled with fun.
Capitolio Nacional
EMBRACE THE HISTORY As the capital of Cuba, and the largest city in the Caribbean, Havana makes a natural starting point for a trip through this fascinating country. On Havana’s streets, there’s the distinct feeling that you’ve gone back in time, but to truly explore the history of the place, pay a visit to the city centre, also known as Old Havana. The area is filled with historic architecture, museums and galleries – don’t miss the breath-taking architecture of Capitolio Nacional; the Cathedral of Havana; the Great Theatre of Havana and the Museum of Revolution, The capital city, Havana

in which the story of Cuba’s revolution is captured in artefacts of the time. Soak up the atmosphere of the city by simply strolling through its narrow side streets packed with pastel-coloured buildings, taste the local flavours in a private restaurant or paladar, and pop in for a drink at El Floridita, one of the bars made famous by Ernest Hemingway.
SAVOUR THE FLAVOURS Although Cuba is not known as a culinary destination, and the food is, in fact, generally quite plain, the local produce is often organic and always fresh. Most dishes revolve around the few key ingredients of pork, chicken, beans, rice and root vegetables, and some common dishes include shredded beef stew made with tomatoes, onions and garlic; roasted pork marinated in garlic, onions and herbs; rice and beans; fried or boiled green bananas and fried plantains. Fresh seafood is also readily available, and street foods like corn fritters, breads and cornmeal tamales with red pepper sauce are sold from street trolleys, driveways and porches.

GO SHOPPING
Centro Cultural
Antiguos So much of Havana life is Almacenes de lived outside, with people’s Deposito San José lives spilling out onto the bustling streets. The shopping is no different, and outdoor markets are a must. The Centro Cultural Antiguos Almacenes de Deposito San José is the city’s largest openair market where you’ll find a multitude of locally made goods, paintings, jewellery, leather items and plenty of traditional snacks. Also, with the rise of private business in recent years, it’s now possible (although still quite difficult) to track down original antiques and vintage collections of books, maps, glassware, ceramics, jewellery and Art Deco furniture, so if you have the time, it’s well worth the effort. When it comes to buying locally produced gifts to take home, you can’t go wrong with cigars, rum and coffee.
EXPERIENCE A FESTIVAL If you’re lucky enough to be in Havana in December, take a look at the International Jazz Festival, which offers visitors the opportunity to see some of Cuba’s finest musicians, as well as a range of international jazz greats. For something a little different, check out the Habano Festival, which takes place towards the end of February every year. The festival celebrates the much-loved Cuban cigar, and guests are able to try
samples and visit tobacco plantations and working factories as well as attend workshops and seminars. If you’re planning a trip later in the year, don’t miss the country’s most vibrant event – the Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba. It’s a week-long carnival of parades, salsa bands and late-night parties that takes place in Santiago de Cuba in July every year.
HIT THE ROAD If you feel like some respite from the city, the small town of Trinidad, located in the centre of Cuba, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and offers a retreat from the high-energy buzz of Havana. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Escambray mountain range, the colonial town is an intoxicating

mix of architectural delights, and has an emerging food and nightlife scene that revels in Afro-Cuban influences. Centred around the Plaza Mayor, the town spreads out into a network of museums, pastel coloured buildings, and cobbled streets. Take some time out to discover the town’s rich history or walk to the top of the bell tower of the San Francisco Convent for breath taking views of the town and the surrounding mountains. The vibrancy of Cuba is very much alive in Trinidad, and there is often salsa dancing just below the Casa de la Musica. Many of the privately owned restaurants begin the dancing after the dinner service is over, and the party spills onto the street where anyone can join in.
SOAK UP THE SUN No trip to the Caribbean would be complete without a trip to the beach, and this island nation certainly has sun, sand and sea in abundance. Just 20 minutes Playa Pilar
Playa Ancón beach
from Havana lies the picturesque Playas del Este – a nine kilometre stretch of coast, and home to six beaches, each with their own unique charm. A little further along the coast is the resort beach of Varadero, and with its 25 kilometre-long peninsular, white sand and clear water, it’s not hard to see why it’s become the place to be for tour operators. For something a little quieter, the trip to Playa Pilar on the north coast is well worth it. It’s a peaceful spot with spotless sand and warm water, and is said to be Ernest Hemingway’s favourite retreat. In fact, the place is named after his yacht, Pilar. On the south coast is Playa Ancón; a beach that many argue is Cuba’s finest. With turquoise waters and reefs ideal for diving and snorkelling, it really is a Caribbean gem. Can’t decide which beach to explore? The good news is that no matter where you travel in Cuba, you’re never far from the coast, and each area has its own distinct beauty. SV

apetonians are uniquely blessed when it comes to outdoor sporting opportunities: our hiking, biking, surfing, golfing and trail running facilities are among the finest the world has to offer. However, this summer, a new sporting craze -- stand-up paddleboarding (SUP for short) -- is set to become the first choice for those looking to get a fun workout in the sun. In this article we’ll explain the history and the meteoric rise of stand-up paddleboarding in recent years, before suggesting reasons for its immense popularity and making recommendations for good spots to have a go right here in Cape Town.
ANCIENT IDEA, MODERN APPLICATION Stand-up, paddle-propelled boats were favoured by ancient tribes -- particularly by warriors, for their stealth -- in regions as diverse as South America, Africa and Polynesia. To this day, you can travel along the Zambezi in

SUP SPORT
a carved-out kayak known as a mokoro; while in the Peruvian Amazon, you can take your chances on a rickety boat made of reeds and named in honour of the experience of riding a wild horse. In its modern (sporting) form, however, SUP traces its origins to Hawaii. Although reportedly an established sport on the island since the 16th Century, it was in the 1940s -- after the region opened to America following the development of Pearl Harbour -- that SUP first began to take off, gaining popularity with visitors to Hawaii who had originally ventured there to surf its alreadyfamous shoreline. This trend intensified in the 1990s, when Hawaiian surf schools began introducing SUP as a way to cope with low or unpredictable swells -- and the activity soon spread to most major surf-centres across the globe. With safe, high-tech and relatively affordable SUP boards and paddles now widely available (R7,500-R13,500), the sport’s rise in popularity has been astronomical: in two of the last three years, it was the sport that most people in America tried for the first time, and international competitions of increasing size and stature will ensure its continued growth in the foreseeable future.
you can maintain a 360-degree view of your surroundings while exercising. SUP’s versatility, and the fact that it is so customisable as a sport, are other prime reasons for its popularity. It really is the kind of water sport that ‘anyone can do’ (and there are not too many of those!), plus you don’t need a particularly large body of water, nor specific weather conditions, in order to enjoy yourself. The nature of the exercise also means that you can push yourself just as far as you want to: you can SUP purely as a hobby, a fun way to be ‘on the water’ that is both relaxing and interactive; or you can get serious, developing your speed and even competing professionally in standup paddleboarding competitions.
WHERE DO I SIGN UP? As mentioned, Cape Town is a world leader in SUP opportunities. Not only are there a plethora of excellent (and not to mention picturesque) spots to get ‘SUPping’ in the Mother City, but there are also a number of established and reputable companies that will guide you through your first stand-up
paddleboard experience. SUP Cape Town (082 789 0411) has two offices, at the V&A Waterfront and at Intaka Island in Century City, and offers a range of options for both beginners and more experienced ‘SUPpers’. They offer hour-long tours (R150) around three different stations in Cape Town, and they also rent out paddleboards and equipment on a long-term basis for holidaymakers in the Cape (R620/day and R1,250/week). They also set up on Clifton 4th Beach during the summer tourist season, where SUP rentals are administered on a firstcome, first-served basis. Other great options include Ocean Riders (021 510 0503) -- offering lessons and tours for around R200/hour -- and the Table View-based High Five surf school (021 554 6062), where SUP gear can be rented for R200 (for two hours), and 2-hour lessons go for R350. For those with their own stand-up paddleboard and equipment, consider heading up the West Coast to places such as Elands Bay and Langebaan, two of South Africa’s premier water sport destinations. SV
WHY THE FUSS? The attractions of stand-up paddleboarding are many and varied. To begin with the obvious, in summer in South Africa, SUP involves a day out spent on sun-flooded water -- always a wonderful place to get some exercise, and especially during the hot December holidays. Enthusiastic paddlers also rave about the nature of this exercise: it targets the core muscles and develops upper body strength -which are essential to most water sports, particularly surfing -- but in a light and sustained (as opposed to sudden and strenuous) manner. There is also something uniquely meditative about sports in which

COMPACT BUT NOT In short, Land Rover refers to the new Discovery Sport as ‘the world’s most versatile premium compact SUV’ and they couldn’t be more right. At first glance you won’t necessarily place the Discovery Sport in the compact SUV range, its slightly larger and carries a lot more presence than its competitors in the compact/mini SUV segment. The Discovery Sport is filling the shoes of the Freelander that’s stepped down from the Landy family. Instead of mourning the exit of the compact SUV Freelander, we are celebrating the Discovery Sport. The Sport can seat an impressive 5+2 passengers, sticking to its Discovery roots.
PREMIUM CLASS The design team at Land Rover has pulled out all the stops with the Discovery Sport. They have kept their premium design elements such as the stitching in the door panels and seating, and extending onto the dash for a refined and rounded off look. Perfectly typical to what you would find in the extended Land Rover family however with a little bit less Range Rover and a little bit more Discovery. State of the art technology gets featured throughout the car. The new 8inch touchscreen infotainment system coupled with intuitive controls makes this one of the highlights in the cabin.
VERSATILITY AT ITS BEST The Discovery Sport adapts effortlessly to any drive situation and makes every encounter behind the wheel pleasurable. Whether it’s the 9-speed automatic gearbox with an adaptive shift strategy that shows off its full potential on the open road, or the impressive Hill Descent Control® when taking on the off-road terrain. From a performance point of view you won’t be disappointed. The 2.0l Si4 kicks out 177kW and clocks 0 – 100km/h in 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 200km/h. The Discovery Sport is there to impress all the way.
TAKING OWNERSHIP There are 9 models in the Discovery Sport range. 5 Diesel and 4 Petrol models, with the TD4 S as the entry level model and the Si4 HSE LUXURY being the top end model. Prices starting from R616 000.00. All models include a standard 5 year/100 000km Maintenance Plan and Roadside Assistance. SV

BIG DEAL The bold new, bigger and better Ford Ranger series is making everyone sit up and take notice. A lot of American muscle truck influences are clearly visible in the Ranger’s facelift. It has a mean grille that introduces the Ranger to any audience and immediately demands a second and sometimes a third look back.
INNER PEACE In the cabin of the Ranger you will be pleasantly surprised. There’s a lot of ‘car’ in there. The finishes are refined and wellrounded, much like the Kuga and EcoSport, and a lot less of the 2011 pre-facelift Ranger. The technology featured is top notch, starting with the multi-functional steering wheel to the middle mounted touchscreen and down to the display camera, everything you expect from ‘top of the range’, you can expect from the Ranger.
STAYING IN LINE One of the highlights of the new Ranger must be the Lane Keeping Alert and Lane Keeping Aid. What this dynamic duo means is that should you drift or veer out of lane accidently at high speeds this nifty function will help keep you in line. The front camera detects that you are straying from your lane and the Lane Keeping Alerts will slightly vibrate your steering wheel to alert you. The Lane Keeping Aid, should you not correct with the initial warning, activates the steering torque and will gently guide the Ranger back into its lane, all under your perfect control.
UNDER THE HOOD The top of the range TDCI 4x4 3.2L WILDTRAK Hi-Rider kicks out an impressive 147kW at 3000rpm which makes it a great contender in the bakkie/SUV ranges. The expected fuel consumption is in a very competitive range. With a claimed 9.0l per 100km you will have some very happy driving miles behind you. Couple that with an 80l tank and a round trip to Oudtshoorn could be non-stop.
MORE BAKKIE FOR BUCK The Ford Ranger WILDTRAK range consists of 3 models. Starting with the 3.2 TDCI 4X2 WILDTRAK Hi-Rider manual, with the same model in automatic being the next one in line, and finishing up is the 3.2 TDCI 4X4 WILDTRAK Hi-Rider automatic. Don’t be fooled though, Ford has been very busy.
The expanded Ranger range consists of 36 models. The starting price for the WILDTRAK range comes in at R534 900.00 All Rangers comes standard with a 4 year/ 120 000km warranty coupled with a 5 year/ 100 000km service plan (service intervals of 20 000km). SV
