This one was easy; Cape Town is bursting at the seams with new restaurants, exciting events, and trending fashion and décor news to keep us busy and inspired over this holiday season. Travel trends see us visit a very close to home seaside suburb, Kalk Bay, and if you’re looking for a destination a bit further afield, then Australia is a great starting point to begin your explorations. The holiday season naturally brings festivities along with it, and so we’ve listed our top local MCC bubblies (including a delicious non-alc version, too) for that effervescent pop we all enjoy. We’ve made it to the end of another glorious year, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what’s in store for the next. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our wonderful supporters – we’ve loved how you, the Cape Town community, have so graciously let us into your homes. Privileged is an understatement. Please do keep in contact with us; we really appreciate all the feedback and conversations. Be safe and enjoy the festivities. Email me at lauren@southernvines.co.za

Three Cape Town-based artists create work that is inspired by our country —from its people to its shores — South Africa lives in each of these diverse collections. Chloe Obermeyer, Janna Prinsloo and John Pace all produce art that is relevant and refreshing, each in a medium and style that is uniquely their own.
CHLOE OBERMEYER Chloe Obermeyer is a visual artist based in Cape Town. She graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 and has since exhibited her work at various spaces around the country, as well as at photographic exhibitions in Italy. Chloe draws artistic inspiration from the natural world, and from the ocean in particular. She is intrigued by nature’s ability to perplex scientific conclusions, as well as its ability to inspire human imagination and fiction. For her, her work is a means of navigating her interest in South Africa’s oceans and coastlines. Chloe creates cyanotype prints — a cameraless form of printing that dates back to the 1800s and is famed for its distinct blueprints. Some of her latest work combines these cyanotype prints with other mediums, including inks, acrylics, watercolour and koki pen pigments. Chloe’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

JANNA PRINSLOO Janna Prinsloo was born and raised in Pretoria where she completed her degree in Fine Art. She is now based in Cape Town where she works as a professional artist. She has participated in exhibitions across the country and was awarded the Vernon John Design Merit Prize as part of the Vuleka Art Competition in 2010. Many of Janna’s works are of the human figure, which for her is a way to represent hidden truths and personal, internal realities. While she works in the traditional medium of oil painting on canvas or board, her subject matter is often strongly figurative and vibrant. She describes herself as being intrigued by the inner world of individuals, and through her art, depicts people and their interactions with symbolic landscapes. Janna’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Buitenkant Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com

JOHN PACE John Pace has worked in the design and advertising industry for the last 30 years and currently works as the Creative Director at his Cape Town-based agency At Pace. He is also an award-winning artist and was the winner of the Sanlam Portrait Award in 2015 for the portrait of his own son, Jack. He studied Fine Art and Graphic Design at the Durban Technical College, before beginning his successful career in advertising. He paints and draws in his spare time and has exhibited his work locally. John has worked with printmaking as well as monochromatic drawing, with a focus on animal subjects. His latest work includes portraits of human subjects in the medium of oil on canvas. His collection titled Looking at You, depicts ordinary people with extraordinary lives — among his subjects are a pig farmer, chicken seller, and butcher man. His oil paintings, which are accessible and relatable, work by lifting the subjects above the everyday often endowing them with a heroic aspect. John’s work can be found at www.johnpace.co.za SV

EVENT WHAT’S HOT
O
riginally from Galicia in north-eastern Spain, Chef Santi Louzán is a warm and creative soul with an extraordinary appetite for great food, wine, and company. It, therefore, makes perfect sense that he would have adopted the concept of Chefs Table Cape Town, a sublime evening of social dining that sends guests home with a bevvy of treasured memories, new friends, and probably just a little bit of a headache the morning after.
BOUTIQUE, INTIMATE DINING This dining experience is no gimmick – you are literally invited into Chef Santi’s home in an apartment above the historic Longmarket Street to spend an evening with him, eating his fabulous creations, listening to his fascinating tales, and connecting with strangers from all over the Cape, the country, and the world. Here, you are welcomed like an old friend and instantly given a glass of something delicious, be it a gin cocktail or the wine of the evening, while waitrons carrying plates of delectable hors d’oeuvres do laps of the room. On the particular night we attended, Chef Santi had paired his multi-course dining extravaganza with wines from Zandvliet, a beautiful Robertson Wine Valley estate that bears a lofty reputation for producing outstanding Shiraz.
FOOD WITH FLOURISH Between disappearing into the kitchen to whip together the evening’s meal, the vibrant and cheeky Chef Santi does the social rounds, warmly introducing himself and getting to know his
guests. The food of the evening is likely to change depending on his mood, the season, latest inspirations, and the particular winery he has chosen to work with. On our night, however, we were treated to Chef Santi’s modern take on the classic prawn cocktail starter, which was paired with the Zandvliet Sauvignon Blanc, followed by crab, hake, and caviar in a creamy onion sauce. Next up was a zesty and bright chorizo salad (Zandvliet Estate Shiraz 2015), a palate-cleansing cocktail of pineapple, ClemenGold gin, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and then the main course: fillet steak served with mash and carrots, peas, and corn wrapped in a crispy pastry, paired with the extraordinary Kalkveld Shiraz 2015. Dessert was a full-on production. The table was covered with a protective waterproof cover onto which Chef Santi swished, swilled, and scattered an array of ingredients, from chocolate sauce and custard to blueberries, gooseberries, and pomegranate seed. Directly onto this sweet mess, he slapped great dollops of chocolate mousse, which he topped with a torched marshmallow.
A MUST-TRY SOCIAL DINING EXPERIENCE Chefs Table Cape Town is, in equal measure, about good food, wine, and company, for what is good food without wine and, moreover, what is a great meal without people to share it with? With these principles as his latest ventures’ bedrock, Chef Santi Louzán has successfully created a special, boutique, and intimate social dining experience that we absolutely love. SV

hef Luke Dale Roberts is a man who needs little introduction. Think The Test Kitchen, The Shortmarket Club, and The Potluck Club. He is a master of ingeniously innovative gastronomy sans snobbery, and his name is practically synonymous with fine dining. In October 2018, this indomitable chef expanded his mighty empire to include Salsify at The Roundhouse in Camps Bay. Standing proudly by his side is Chef Ryan Cole, his protégé and head chef from The Test Kitchen. The Roundhouse, which used to be the hunting lodge of Sir Lord Charles Somerset, Governor of the Cape between 1814 and 1826, is an institution of the seaside suburb of Camps Bay. For years, it has been the “special occasion” restaurant people take friends, colleagues, family, and lovers to spend an evening on the receiving end of exceptional food, wine, and service. With Chefs Luke Dale Roberts and Ryan Cole taking over the reins of this fine establishment, the goal has not only been to maintain this standard and expectation but to update and amplify it.
On the evening of the unveiling of Salsify at The Roundhouse, guests were welcomed with a drink and the opportunity to spend a leisurely hour exploring the revamped space, which is truly something unexpected. With a glass of the delicious Charles Fox Reserve Rosé Brut in hand, we took up residence in the astounding graffiti room, where a clutch of colourful armchairs and concrete walls emblazoned with politically-inflamed graffiti offered an intimate yet edgy feel. This captivating room is the collaborative effort of Chef Luke’s wife and design partner Sandalene and international street artist Louis de Villiers, who also goes by the pseudonym Skull Boy. Deliciously ensconced in our plush thrones, a steady stream of smartly dressed servers brought us delicately assembled bites of lamb leg tartar, celeriac and parmesan, and beetroot and sweet mustard hors d’oeuvres. From here, it was rather entertaining watching guests’ faces light up with intrigue as they filled into this space via the spectacular atrium, with its Otto du Plessis bronze sculpture Salsify, the restaurant’s guardian and muse.

THE MAIN EVENT As diverting as we found the reimagined Roundhouse interior to be, we were ultimately here for the food, for which Chefs Luke Dale Roberts and Ryan Cole have earned a stratospheric reputation. And so it was with much anticipation that I planted myself at a table glittering with stainless steel cutlery and crystal glasses and awaited the main event. For starters, spring minestrone soup with octopus, a fresh oyster, and sea herbs. Fresh, gentle, fragrant, and vividly coloured, I couldn’t imagine a more suitable culinary metaphor for springtime at the ocean. This was followed by slices of spice-fired tuna, smoked tomato, and lemon atchar, embellished with a crispy chickpea whirl. The main meal was a medallion of aged beef sirloin served with onion gravy, greens, tiny turnips, and an earthy porcini pudding. And the final courses (pre-desserts and desserts) were roasted pineapple, coconut cake, and goat kefir ice, and a strawberry scone with blueberry jam and champagne jelly. The culinary theme at Salsify at The Roundhouse is open to interpretation; however, to me, it places simplicity and elegance above all. Rather than distract guests with a cacophony of food flavours, combinations, and complexities, Chefs Luke and Ryan create dishes that are honest and harmoniously balanced. There is a gentle interplay of flavours and textures that allows every ingredient to be honoured and the result is a mouth experience that is as gentle, compelling, and deeply satisfying as a Jane Austin love story.
I intend no hyperbole. We went on a journey that began with the exquisitely genteel Migliarina Grey Matters Pinot Gris 2017 to the clear favourite: the divine Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir 2017. Sommelier Nash Kanyangarara did an incredible job of marrying each dish with a wine that was not only its suitable partner but its soul mate. Additionally, each new wine was served in a fresh glass, the shape of which was tailored to enhance its bouquet. Spectacular attention to detail!
ANOTHER GEM IN THE CROWN The name Salsify (Sal-suh-fee), a rather misunderstood root vegetable, belies the fact that the new restaurant is indeed another gem in Chef Luke Dale Roberts’ culinary crown. From the moment you enter, you are treated to a feast, first for the eyes and then for the stomach. Personally, I found my mind fairly nourished, too, after the graffiti’s intellectually stimulating messages and the wine-fuelled conversation around the dinner table. “We’re ready for something new, and we think the city is ready too”, says Luke. SV
WINE, GLORIOUS WINE Each dish was brilliantly paired with wines from around the Western Cape – and when I say brilliantly,

FOUR OF CAPE TOWN’S HOTTEST NEW RESTAURANTS
With every passing week, it seems, new restaurants are flinging open their doors with a flourish, ready and raring to serve their unique take on South African or foreign cuisine. It’s a testament to the exploding dining scene in Cape Town that so many establishments are being successfully launched, many of which are going on to generate waves amongst the city’s self-confessed foodies and wine enthusiasts. Here are four brand new Cape Town restaurants we’ve got our eyes on.
THE RESTAURANT @ THE NEK Opened in November 2018, The Restaurant @ The Nek is the very newest kid on the Constantia block and has been opened right next door to its sister restaurant, La Parada. Michelin-trained chef Dylan Laity, also former head chef of The Roundhouse in Camps Bay, has the reins in the kitchen, which, he explained, will be “serving modern South African cuisine with definite influences from my travels abroad.” The restaurant itself is elegant, simplistic, and has been dressed in a Scandinavianchic design theme that allows breath-taking views of the Constantia Valley to take centre stage. EIKE BY BERTUS BASSON South African chef and TV personality Bertus Basson continues his rampage through the Cape Winelands with his new restaurant Eike, the sixth in his impressive portfolio. Located in a spectacular historic building in Stellenbosch’s famous Dorp Street, Eike’s food philosophy is firmly rooted in traditional South African cuisine, served with a contemporary flair and in an intimate, beautifully styled space. At the kitchen’s helm is chef Kyle du Plooy who has a similar passion for South African flavours. Together, the two chefs are serving up imaginative dishes that can only be described as alchemy! The kitchen is filled with salvaged and vintage pieces such as the table, which works double duty as an island and a workspace. The pendant light is from an old barn in Paarl that was demolished and renovated. The footstool pouffe is customdesigned and made by a local upholsterer; hide was sourced in Namibia.
The children’s bedroom has a subtle blue theme. The couple inherited the beds from Tina’s family. The table and chairs are pieces from Hannes’ childhood, and the pendants are from a former dairy that sells pieces from local farms and factories.

MINIMALIST MAXIMALISM Downscaling from a spacious four-bedroom house to a sophisticated one-bedroom pied-à-terre in Cape Town was an exercise in scrupulous editing for the designer owners of South African fashion label Kluk CGDT. BY JESSICA ROSS STYLING SVEN ALBERDING PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX, BUREAUX
M
uch to the amusement of almost anyone who visits, Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit like to think of their home in Cape Town’s trendy Bree Street as a return to simplicity. ‘We tell everyone that it’s very minimal, but our friends walk in and ask, “What's minimal about this?”’ says Malcolm, laughing. Indeed, the founders of haute couture brand Kluk CGDT, who are known for their penchant for exuberant colour, daring pattern and meticulous detailing, are rarely associated with minimalism. And the space that they live in, just above their flagship showroom, is packed to the rafters with art, design, plants, books, and of course, the makings of new, bespoke dresses. ‘It’s not that we moved into a small space – this isn’t very small – but rather that we decluttered our lifestyle,’ says Malcolm, and Christiaan chimes in, ‘You can’t believe how much isn’t here!’ The couple, who have been partners in business and life for 17
years, relocated into the studio, after deciding to knock down their longterm four-bedroomed Fresnaye home and develop it into an upmarket apartment block with the distinct style of the Kluk CGDT brand. Downscaling for this home meant making some difficult decisions about what would stay and what would go. ‘We had to be pretty ruthless,’ Malcolm says. The first to be tackled was the couple’s beloved art collection. ‘We decided to first choose our favourites, and once they were in place we would find the space for the rest,’ notes Christiaan. When hung against these walls, they found works were given new context. ‘There were pieces that we hadn’t really appreciated before this,’ he says, nodding to a series of six playful paintings by Gabrielle Raaff that come alive against the dusty pink walls of the living area. Some of the notable works making the cut include art and sculpture by Andrzej Urbanski, Ceramic Matters, Hylton Nel and Andrew Verster.

As creative directors, the couple realised that their dressmaking ethos – that of fashioning something deeply resonant for their clients – was key to their enjoyment of their home. ‘When we make clothes for a bride, it’s about indulging that person and making that person feel good, and we put ourselves to that too. How do we live? What do we want? And it’s always thinking about our perspective,’ says Malcolm. That sentiment echoes in every part of their new home, from the artworks that they’ve almost hidden from view – nuggets of appreciation for their eyes only – to the architecture itself. Seen from above, part of the building’s shape resembles a heart, so they covered the top with a coat of crimson, a perfectly personal symbol. ‘There is always an element of surprise in everything we do,’ Christiaan says. At the entrance of the shop, surprise hits you with a jolt of citrine – ‘tennis ball’, Christiaan insists – that covers the door frame. ‘We are not beige or grey people,’ he notes. ‘We are about colour and colour juxtaposition and print, and we love mixing it and pushing ourselves.’ Spread over two stories the shop is the embodiment of their love for hue. On the ground floor a Yves Klein Blue desk stands in contrast to the dusty pink walls, the brand’s signature
colour called ‘You’re My Sweetie’. The staircase that gently curves up to the second floor is offset with a geometric steel balustrade by local artist Rodan Kane Hart. Even the structure itself stands as an anomaly. Back in 2014, when Bree Street was just beginning to gain its reputation as the city’s hippest thoroughfare, the couple approached interior architect Craig Kaplan to create an altogether new building. Brick, black and glass, this façade was something Cape Town had not yet seen. ‘We push our own boundaries and take risks and we are prepared to live with that,’ Malcolm explains. ‘There has definitely been a change in our aesthetic,’ he says. ‘We used to talk about how the house had a “Miss Havisham overgrown quality. While the eclecticism remains, it's much more contemporary.’ Just about everything you see here comes from the Kluk CGDT showrooms or the old home, but recovered, repainted and reworked. ‘We aren’t ones to go into a store and buy new stuff,’ Malcolm notes. ‘We do love items that have provenance. I don’t think our look is retro or even mid-century - it’s more about something that is a little different or unique and making it our own.’ And the living zone is peppered with these unique finds, from an old chimney flue that’s now a coffee table to the navy armchairs they found in a junk shop – ‘possibly Cassina’ – and reupholstered in velvet. All the colourful modernity mingles well with the couple’s own pursuits in product design, such as the vibrant and playful tiger rugs, produced in collaboration with Mae Pakdoust from Mae Artisan Rugs. ‘Emotion, experience and indulgence,’ says Malcolm, ‘that’s what we are about.’ And while the city pied-à-terre was a lesson in downscaling, Malcolm and Christiaan realised that sometimes the biggest indulgences are found in the smaller delights, such as the urban rooftop, complete with requisite greenery and a grass patch where their schnauzer Yohji can roll around and where they can steal away for a bite in the sun, or a sundowner overlooking the bustle of Bree Street. ‘Despite what you might think from looking at it, simplicity is the essence of this home. It’s emancipating’ Malcolm insists, and Christiaan agrees. ‘I feel connected to the city. Getting home excites me. It makes me feel alive.’ >>

Malcolm and Christiaan like to hold on to items with provenance and refashion them over time. So the couches in the living area have been given new life with chic fabrics which deliver that tactile ‘sink in’ quality that makes a living area feel cosy. The pair also enjoy reimagining objects, such as the brass flume, that’s been turned into a coffee table. The rug is from Mae Artisan Rugs. The armchairs were sourced at a junk shop and the Where You Need It side tables are by Kluk CGDT.
This breakfast nook is both the perfect spot for a cup of coffee while Bree Street comes alive in the morning and a place to wind down at night time, overlooking the city lights. Surrounding the glass and marble table are chairs from Gilles de Moyencourt. The antique Japanese sideboard is from Onsite Gallery. The standing lamp is from a second-hand store in Fish Hoek.
The smaller kitchen meant that Christiaan and Malcolm needed to be much more selective about their crockery. They only chose to keep pieces they love. ‘The beauty of that is when it comes to cutlery, crockery and napkins, we now only use our best pieces,’ Macolm says.

Among the things that were carefully edited was the couple’s wardrobe. ‘I look after my pieces now,’ says Christiaan. ‘Dawg’ by Kope | Figgins is one of the creative collaborations between Kluk CGDT and local artists for their spring summer 2016 collection.

WELLNESS TRENDS
Natural (AND NOURISHING)
TRENDS Crazes come and go, but these healthy trends are worth a try this summer.
BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
T
he end of the year is upon us, and for many of us, that means beating deadlines before we can rest, gearing up for social commitments, and trying to organise family trips and events. While self-care has become a wellness buzzword, there is something to be said for looking after our own health and overall wellbeing, especially as we enter the last, busy few weeks of the year. The past year has seen trends come and go, but these are some we think might just be worth a try. There should always be time to incorporate a little something nourishing into our daily routines, after all.
SPICE UP YOUR SKINCARE Turmeric is certainly having a moment — the super-spice has found itself in the spotlight as a key ingredient in the healthy (and trendy) golden latte and is
loved for its anti-inflammatory properties. But, did you know that the root can be used in other ways? Cape Town skincare brand Deity Skin (www.deityskin. co.za) has added a turmeric and activated charcoal face mask to their range of vegan-friendly products. Ashleigh-Jane Denton, the brains behind the skincare range explains why she chose to incorporate the ingredient: "Turmeric is traditionally an Ayurvedic herb, due to its high content of antioxidants and super abilities to reduce inflammation in our bodies. As part of a face mask, turmeric contributes to a brighter, glowing complexion, as it helps to reduce redness and inflammation caused from acne and spots. It also aids in lightening scars and pigmentation and promotes healing." So, if you thought spices were for flavour alone, you might consider adding this natural healer to your skincare regime this summer.

TRY A MUSHROOM LATTE Among the superfoods that have made it as recent wellness trends, are medicinal mushrooms, and with that has come the rise of mushroom coffee. Made with chaga medicinal mushroom powder, the drink is said to lower blood sugar levels and promote digestive health. Plus, it's less acidic than regular coffee, so even the most sensitive stomachs can usually tolerate it. If you're willing to swap your morning caffeine for this nutrient-rich option, you can find mushroom mixes at Four Sigmatic (www.foursigmatic-sa.co.za), a local company that distributes a range of medicinal mushroom products. More into tea than coffee? Faithful to Nature (www.faithful-to-nature.co.za) stocks a chaga mushroom tea.

HAVE A BOWL OF GOODNESS It's not a new trend, but bowl food is still on the rise. Sometimes known as Buddha bowls, the concept is about incorporating greens and grains with toppings like nuts and seeds, in one healthy dish. Very often vegan-friendly, these dishes are proving popular around the city, and it's easy to see why — they're full of flavour and very nourishing. Plant Café (www.plantcafe.co.za) in the city centre serves up a Buddha bowl packed with chickpeas, lemon-garlic mushrooms, tempeh, fresh carrot, basil and orange; while Nourish'd Café & Juicery in Gardens (www.nourishd.co.za) offers rainbow bowls filled with colourful, fresh ingredients — their glittershine bowl includes exotic mushrooms, quinoa, coriander, baby spinach, kale, vegan cashew nut cream cheese and roasted seeds; and they also serve smoothie bowls made with fresh fruits, homemade granola and edible flowers.

MAKE IT MATCHA It's also been around for a while, but it looks like matcha is here to stay. The powdered form of green tea, matcha tastes sweeter and more creamy than regular green tea and is said to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and it helps to reduce inflammation. It's popped up in cafĂŠs all around Cape Town and can even be found in treats like ice cream and baked goods, which provides a great excuse to try the antioxidantrich ingredient. Scheckter's Raw (www.schecktersraw.com) in Sea Point serves up organic matcha flapjacks topped with strawberries, banana and whipped cream made from coconut milk, as well as the classic matcha latte. For something really indulgent, Nobu at the One & Only Hotel (www.noburestaurants.com) offers a chocolate bento box on their dessert menu, which includes warm chocolate cake with a scoop of green tea ice cream. Yum! SV

Wine
FOR THOUGHT BY EMILE JOUBERT
T
he wine world is in a notorious state of disagreement and debate. From Bordeaux to Bellville, Dunedin to Durban and Margaret River to Mendoza, there is a constant buzz of diverse opinion to be heard — who is drinking what wine, where and why; what styles and which grape varieties are set to rope in hordes of modern consumers; and where should the world’s next gem of a wine region pop-up? Common consensus, however, is that today’s wine drinkers can’t seem to get enough of pink wine, more elegantly termed rosé. And, the thirst for this style of wine continues to be insatiable even though pink wines don't usually gain much hype from wine writers and marketers. Being fun, light, uncomplicated, easy to drink and — heaven forbid — simple to understand, rosé is free from the analytical scrutiny, and high-browed pontification red and white wines are placed under by self-important wine critics. It appears to be a case of the less said, the better, as rosé wines seem to sell themselves, growing in all international markets. Even the French are importing bulk wine from South Africa from which to make rosé, as they don’t have enough themselves. With our agreeable sunny climate and the nation’s love of the outdoors, local wine-drinkers’ enjoyment of rosé is a no-brainer, and consumers are truly spoilt for choice. There are sweetish cheap pinks to glug from icy beer-mugs while listening to house music, fizzy pinks for creating a romantic impression by candle-light or dry and bracing wines for all-day sipping while catching some rays.
A particularly fine rosé to which I have been returning to as summer sets in is the Vondeling Rosé 2018 . Vondeling makes a diverse range of wines from its vineyards set in the Voor Paardeberg region of Paarl, and under the guidance of cellar master Matthew Copeland, has become a winery to watch. Sure, Vondeling has a great range of more serious wines — the Babiana white blend is among the country’s finest — but the farm’s rosé has really impressed of late, particularly as the summer mood strikes. For his rosé, Matthew mainly uses Merlot grapes, which are grown in the broken stone soil of the Vondeling region. The structure of the earth there is particularly conducive to wines of firm body, yet confident fruit expression. After pressing, the juice is bled off the red grapes, allowing it to draw just enough colour from the skins to give it that appealing pale pink that makes rosé, well, rosé. The wine is as much a joy to drink as it is to behold, lying in the glass with a colour somewhere between marshmallow and French undergarments. Like classic rosé, Vondeling is bone-dry, yet exudes subtle notes of rose-petal, pomegranate and cherry. But, it's no fruit-salad, the balance between acidity and residual sugar provides a perky drink of life-loving, bright-eyed freshness. The ever-so-slight stroke of tannins from the brief exposure to the grape skins provides a broad, pleasant mouth-feel to make drinking even lovelier. I enjoy mine with carbonara pasta, chicken mayonnaise and smoked salmon with capers.

TASTE WINE
As far as single variety wines go, Sauvignon Blanc leads the popularity stakes in South Africa for exactly the same way rosés are so much in vogue: they are fresh, approachable and you don’t need a Cape Wine Master certificate to understand them. Those wishing to look beyond the many good quaffable Sauvignon Blancs in South Africa should try to get their hands on those being made by Fryer’s Cove on the Cape West Coast. And by this, I mean the real West Coast, way up past Elands Bay in the region of Strandfontein. If you want extreme terroir, this is it — the Sauvignon Blanc vines grow within sea-spray reach of the icy Atlantic Ocean. Not a lot of the wine is made here due to the challenges of farming wine grapes on land better suited to a crayfish factory, but the Fryer’s Cove Bamboes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017 really shows that this grape is capable of displaying a gritty, attractive character when planted on an extreme site. Low yields, as well as the dry, unforgiving soils and the maritime influence result in a fruit of individuality. Once pressed and fermented, the resulting wine is given extended lees contact to ensure every inkling of regional expression and varietal specificity is captured. The result is quite brilliant, and the wine has a distinct salty, kelp-like seabreeze feel, which is not just the figment of some inspired label writer’s imagination. Recognisable Sauvignon Blanc tastes of gooseberry,
asparagus and passionfruit are definitely there to please lovers of this variety. But these wines are enhanced by the oyster-shell, tidal-pool notes that lift the wine to something quite extraordinary. No surprises here — live oysters or grilled fish go a treat with this awesome white wine. For some, red wine may take a backseat during summer months as something chilled is preferred to room temperature wines of firm tannin disposition. This might be so, but Pinot Noir is an all-climate wine, those sweltering 36°C Cape summer days included. With its lower bodymass-index and the fact that chilling improves the inherent dark fruit aspects, Pinot Noir is as refreshing as it is classy. And the wine breaking my heart at the moment due to its elegance and beauty is the Nom Pinot Noir 2017 from Sauerwein. It's a project of Jessica Sauerwein, winemaker and lover, who each year selects grapes from a vineyard high-up in the Elandskloof near Villiersdorp to hand-craft an extraordinary Pinot Noir. It was the South African wine sage Danie de Wet who said there are only three types of wine: red, white and Pinot Noir, and the words ring true in this one from Sauerwein. Dense and dark, the wine enlivens the palate with a brisk rush of energetic acidity before the diverse range of flavours so characteristic of well-made Pinot Noir takes over. Yes, there is also that mysterious mushroom, forest-floor nuance lovers of this grape so often seek out. But the interesting aspects, for me, are the spicy and herbal riffs that lift the tastes of blackcurrant, cherry and strawberry. Lush and sappy, this wine is as generous in its offering of pure, unfettered enjoyment as it is in presenting consumers with a taste of classic, oldworld wine elegance. Drink with… well, just do it. TASTE BUBBLY
The great thing about the festive season in Cape Town is that we live right in the middle of a winemaking region that produces exceptional sparkling wines that really could give the Old-World regions a run for their money (I’m talking about you, Champagne). Moreover, you don’t need to take out a second mortgage on your home to afford them. Here are six spectacular Méthode Cap Classiques you should be drinking this festive season.
LANZERAC BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT NV
STEENBERG 1682 CHARDONNAY MCC
MURATIE LADY ALICE MCC ROSÉ 2015
The Lanzerac Blanc de Blancs Brut NV, made from 100% Chardonnay, is a standout wine and an absolutely delicious way to celebrate the start or end of any day. This nonvintage MCC is a seductive yet refined wine with a creamy texture and rich biscuit notes that give way to vibrant apple and citrus fruits, while ultra-fine bubbles tickle the tongue and palate.
A pale straw yellow in colour, the delectable Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay MCC showcases a veritable fruit basket of vibrant aromas of apple, citrus, peach and sweet white blossom. This is supported by flavours of nectarine, pistachio nuts, and toasted croissant with fine bubbles and a long, refreshing finish. This exuberant MCC is the perfect companion to any special occasion!
Named after a true “belle of the ball”, Lady Alice Sarah Stanford, Muratie’s Lady Alice MCC Rosé is intended as a toast to a lady for whom every day was a celebration. This 100% Pinot Noir is a gorgeous rosegold in colour that is floral in perfume and elegant in delivery. Bright strawberry, cranberry, and naartjie notes are pleasantly underscored by shortbread richness and a creamy mouthfeel.

ool forested valleys, dramatic mountain peaks, verdant botanical gardens, vineyardcarpeted landscapes, and soft white sand beaches: wherever it is you feel most at peace, the Cape boasts a variety of pictureperfect settings in which to reconnect with nature over a lovely meal and perhaps a bottle of local wine. Here are the best of those locations!
WINE FARM PICNICS For a totally lazy day spent under the shade of a towering oak tree, head to the Cape’s winelands with its various wine routes. Here, the picnics are gourmet and prepacked for your convenience (booking in advance is almost always required). ■ Allée Bleue’s (Groot Drakenstein) “chicnics” have become a signature event in the Cape winelands. ■ Grande Provence (Franschhoek) offers Grand Country Picnics on their shaded lawn and sculpture garden. ■ Spier (Stellenbosch) serves up farm-style picnic hampers packed with seasonal favourites. ■ Buitenverwachting (Constantia) head to the wine cellar or outside on the lawns under the centuriesold trees for a picnic. ■ Cape Point Vineyards (Noordhoek) delivers a gorgeous picnic experience in the vineyards.

Evening view of Lion's Head as seen from Camps Bay Beach
BEACH PICNICS On those special, yet rare summer days when the notorious south-easterly winds die down, and there isn’t a cold front raining on everyone’s parade, just about any of the Cape’s beaches offer a wonderful venue for a picnic. When the wind does pick up, however, the sheltered coves of Llandudno (near Hout Bay) and Clifton beaches (at the base of Lion’s Head) can be trusted to offer respite, epic sunset views, and soft white sand for a pleasurable picnicking experience.
MOUNTAIN AND FOREST PICNICS Cape Town’s splendiferous mountains and their forested valleys are fantastic venues for outdoor lovers, where every vantage point, pool of shade, or babbling stream is a potential picnic spot. Sunset picnic from the top of Table Mountain
The Sculpture Garden at the Norval Foundation
Table Mountain’s Cable Car is currently running its half-time summer sunset special for locals (info@tablemountain.net). Signal Hill, accessible by car, is a particularly beautiful place to catch the sunset, as is Lion’s Head, but which requires a bit of a slog to the top. For a shaded forest picnic, Newlands and Tokai forests are popular choices. Further afield, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and Silvermine Nature Reserve
have a number of picnic spots near spectacular lookouts, large reservoirs, waterfalls, and even caves.
GARDEN PICNICS The world-famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Newlands) has earned its reputation for good reason! Sprawled across the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and home to a colourful abundance of plant and bird species, these botanical gardens are a favourite picnic spot for locals and visitors. The recently opened Norval Foundation (Steenberg) is also now offering South African themed summer picnics, which guests can enjoy in its astounding sculpture garden. SV

or the first ten minutes or so, I couldn’t put my finger on it. What was it that made this so completely different from any flying experience I’d ever had before? Then came the revelation: it was dead quiet. Helicopters, commercial airliners, six-seater prop planes, and microlights are a terribly noisy way to take to the sky. But, aside from the periodic blast from the hot air balloon’s gas canister, it was utterly serene, and the gentle floating sensation that accompanied it would have lulled me to sleep were I not absolutely enthralled to be several hundred feet in the air with a view of the Cape that only a privileged few get to experience.

HOT AIR BALLOONING TRAVEL
AN EXHILARATING EXPERIENCE The package offered by GoBallooning includes welcome coffee, an hour-long balloon ride, sparkling wine, and a hot breakfast. Their pilot, the charming and chucklesome Conrad van Wyk, has 30 years’ flying experience in 19 different countries, so we approached the day’s adventure relieved to be in such capable hands. The experience begins with a cup of hot coffee in
an enormous, dew-kissed field at Klein Joostenberg Farm in Stellenbosch, while Conrad and the strong Johan Nieuwoudt, the owner and operator, set about inflating the balloon. Witnessing the set-up is an essential part of the adventure, I believe, because it provides you with an appreciation of the work and expertise that goes into operating a hot air balloon. Also, it’s just plain fascinating watching a flaccid stretch of fabric transform into a towering behemoth. Once the balloon is fully inflated and vertical, guests – eight in total – are invited to climb into the oversized laundry hamper and get comfortable. It’s then a matter of minutes before you gently ascend into the sky.
VIEW FROM THE TOP The hot air balloon sails silently through the air, allowing the early morning melody of the Cape farmlands to reach our ears: the moos and bleats of farm animals in their pens, the rattle of our national bird, the blue crane, and the sound of dawn bird calls
originating from the fields, trees, reed beds, thickets, and river banks. Pilot Conrad carefully and expertly controlled our altitude, taking us high enough to afford us views that stretched for tens of kilometres in every direction, and then bringing us close enough to the treetops to swipe a souvenir pine cone. The straw yellows and soft greens of agriculture were punctuated by Cape Dutch homesteads, quaint settlements, and darker patches of vineyards,
handsome in their full summer dress of leaves. It’s little wonder that hot air balloons are popular for marriage proposals! After a blissful hour in the air, we made an exhilarating landing in a farmer’s field, where we assisted Conrad in deflating and folding up the balloon. Johan then arrived in his bakkie with sparkling wine for all to celebrate a successful (and safe) adventure. By 8 am, with enormous grins smacked on our faces, we were seated around the breakfast table at Klein Joostenberg Bistro for a well-deserved hot breakfast.
ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME Whether you’re celebrating something special or just looking for new perspectives on this gorgeous area we live in, hot air ballooning is a fantastic way to inject a little (okay, a lot of) joie de vivre into your veins. here are few places as quintessentially Cape Town as the seaside village of Kalk Bay. With its working harbour, tidal pools, sweet cafés and quirky shops, it's a place that brings together so many of our city’s best elements. It's an easy day trip from the suburbs and makes a great outing for a breath of fresh sea air and a bite to eat.
Olympia Café Instagram
EAT A personal Kalk Bay favourite, Kalky's is located at the harbour (have a look out for the resident seals who hang out nearby). The no-frills restaurant is not much to look at, but the seafood is fresh, and the casual atmosphere is just right for weekend-mode. If, however, you're looking for something a little more indulgent, Olympia Café and Salt are definitely worth a visit. They’re both local favourites and for good reason — the space is
unpretentious, and the food is simple but delicious. The menu at both of these hang-outs change often, you can expect wholesome salads, pastas and soups made with passion, as well as tasty seafood dishes. A new spot in the village, Dalebrook Café is located just opposite the Dalebrook tidal pool, and a short walk from both St James and Kalk Bay itself. Headed by Charmaine Lilje of Chardonnay Deli in Constantia, the café boasts a small, but tasty menu, and serves breakfast and lunch daily and dinner from Thursday to Saturday. And then, of course, no trip to Kalk Bay is complete without popping into Ice Café for some homemade ice cream after lunch. DRINK The Brass Bell is a Kalk Bay institution, and the location simply couldn't be better — it's set right on the ocean with beautiful sea views. Secure a spot by the window and have a drink as the waves literally crash beside you. Keep an eye out for their live music events on Thursdays and on the weekends. Another laid-back option is Cape to Cuba, a quirky cocktail bar on the beach. Pull up a seat on the sand and enjoy views over the harbour with your drink — you may just be tempted to sample one of their mango and chilli mojitos. If you're in the mood for a glass of wine in a really classy spot, visit Harbour House where you can enjoy perfect ocean views in a pretty blue and white space. They offer an extensive range of bubbly and wines, which you may be tempted to pair with their selection of sushi and seafood.

The space exhibits a broad range of work, from photography and textiles to contemporary art and jewellery. The Artvark Gallery is another great spot to soak up some local talent, and you can also buy ceramics, prints, and other artworks at their shop. there's a restaurant that serves up a small but good selection of wines and a simple dinner menu. The village is packed with little shops, and it's easy to while away an afternoon browsing books, antiques and boutique clothing. Quagga Rare Books and Art is one of the oldest and is worth a look just for a glimpse at some of the unusual treasures that line its walls. For something a little more contemporary, check out the Kalk Bay Co-Op, which showcases products by local designers and includes jewellery, homeware and clothing collections. SV

ild and vast, Australia's landscapes are truly diverse. From deserts to reefs, and the cities in between, it's a place you could spend months exploring. But, if you're short on time and looking for adventure, pick one of the country's major hubs. Or, road trip from one to another, and dive into what each of them has to offer.
The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne
VISIT THE COFFEE CAPITAL Melbourne is loved for its eclectic offering of sport and culture and is home to world-class restaurants, as well as an exciting art scene. One of the best ways to experience the city is to wander around the centre on foot. The area is made up of a network of cobbled lanes, where you'll find a mix of cafés, bars, street art and boutiques.
Centre Place, the famous bluestone cobbles laneway in Melbourne’s CBD. It is famous for its vibrant bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques
The city is also loved for its markets, of which there are many to choose from. The Queen Victoria Market is perhaps best known for its wide range of food and is a great place to go for a bite to eat — look out for treats like waffles with rumsoaked bananas at Pickett's Deli; flavoured butters at Curds & Whey; and a cup of quality caffeine at Market Lane Coffee. Sports lovers will enjoy the city's programme of events, which includes international cricket and tennis, Australian football, horse racing, and Grand Prix. If, however, you're more into art, you won't want to miss the chance to visit Australia's oldest gallery. The National Gallery of Victoria boasts a collection of over 70 000 artworks, and hosts workshops, film screenings, and artist-led tours.

ENJOY THE HARBOUR CITY Sydney is a striking city — set on a beautiful harbour and surrounded by beaches and national parks; it's a great combination of wilderness and urban living. You'll want to enjoy some of the city's best beaches if you're in the area — start with Bondi, one of Australia's most famous spots, or take a coastal walk to Bronte Beach, which is a little quieter. There are loads of other options, many of which offer the chance to kayak, surf, snorkel or stand up paddle. After dark, you'll find plenty to keep you entertained in Sydney, whether you're looking for a dining experience, a show, or an unusual bar. In fact, the city has embraced the concept of hidden bars, so if

Just outside the city, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is worth a visit if you'd like to hold a koala or hand feed a kangaroo or wallaby. ADVENTURE SNORKELLING
“A
ren’t there sharks? Don’t seals bite? Isn’t the open ocean a dangerous place?” Even the most strapping and stoic of individuals would likely blanch at the idea of slapping on a wetsuit and a pair of goggles and go swimming with seals. But the bottom line is this: if sharks or man-eating seals were even remotely a problem, the company behind the adventure, Animal Ocean, wouldn’t be making such a roaring trade. And, boy, do they have a roaring trade! Almost every day, weather permitting, multiple groups of adventurer’s head out to Duiker Island to swim with seals.
SUIT UP, SAIL OUT You don’t need anything other than an adventurous spirit to go snorkelling with seals. The vivacious team at Animal Ocean takes care of you the minute you arrive at the Snorkel Centre, which is located on Albert Road in Hout Bay. Here, you are given a safety briefing, suited up in a headto-toe wetsuit, and bundled into a van to be transported to the harbour. It’s a short and epically scenic boat trip to the seal colony at Duiker Island, which lies at the foot
of Hout Bay’s imposing Sentinel Mountain. I do admit that I approached the day with a little – okay, a lot – of trepidation but the minute I was in the water with the seals, my soul soared with the thrill, excitement, and pleasure of it all. Cape fur seals might be ungainly on land but underwater they transform into sublime performers with the grace and elegance of ballet dancers. This time of year, the seal colony at Duiker Island is packed with juvenile seals, and on the day we went out, we shared the water with scores of yearlings. There was also a vagrant elephant seal in the mix, but at ±3,500 kg in weight, we gave him a wide berth. For our group of about ten people, we had two guides who were nearby at all times, and we spent the better part of an hour swimming with seals, filming their antics with a hand-held Go Pro camera, which Animal Ocean rents out to its adventurers. They played, glided, and swam circles around us and I never once felt threatened or even cold, so effective were the 5 mm neoprene wetsuits we were wearing. Back at the Snorkel Centre, we had a quick hot shower, changed back into our daywear, and helped ourselves to a little coffee to help warm the insides.

SNORKELLING ADVENTURE
A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER Beneath the undulating emerald surface of the Atlantic Ocean lies an enchanting wonderland of otherworldly life. Kelp forests sway in the powerful ebb and flow of the current, fish dart in, out, and between the great stalks of kelp, and the submerged rocky outcrops are covered in limpets and a thick tangle of sea algae. This world does not belong to us – indeed, not even gravity reigns here – and perhaps it is this that makes the ocean such a thrill to explore. Add to this the pleasure of sharing these waters with Cape fur seals, and you’ve got a lifetime experience you will never forget. Book your seal snorkelling adventure with Animal Ocean by calling 072 296 9132 between 08:00 and 16:00. For more information, consult their website at www.sealsnorkeling.com SV

xpanding their frontiers from land to sea, Lexus has given us sporty and sophisticated rides, as well as a magnificent yacht, the Lexus LY 650, all in one year. And now, the model that's pulling at our heartstrings is the all-new Lexus LS 500. Characterised by poise, sophistication, class, and power, it's truly something to behold.
DETAILED DESIGN The LS 500 is the fifth generation of its kind. But, with all the bells and whistles, it's truly a modernday marvel. From an exterior point of view, it's as bold as always. As much as the LS is a sedan, it has an elegant coupe-like feel to it. This is achieved with an efficient aerodynamic design and sleek, lower lines coupled with a few extra design elements. The spindle grille for example — which might I add, consists of 5 000 individual surfaces that took highly qualified CAD designers several months to produce — was finished off by hand to add further attention to detail. Furthermore, you are greeted with a design line that extends from the front to the rear of the car, giving an impression of a performance vehicle, which hugs the tar and becomes one with the road.
INTERIOR HEAVEN All your senses are awoken once you step into the new LS. From touch to sight, you are engulfed in
luxury. Much of the inspiration was drawn from traditional Japanese design techniques, such as the subtle ambient lighting. This design element was incorporated in the armrest that lights up, creating an illusion that it's floating next to the door panels. Other design fundamentals include wood trimmings with detailed grain patterns, while the leather seats are, as always, a treat — soft and supple, with meticulous stitch work to round them off. The new steering wheel sports a sleek three-spoke design, and is smaller in diameter from its predecessor, providing the ideal grip for the driver. There are two interior colour options — crimson and black, and just black. When it comes to wood finishes, you can choose between Art Wood Organic or Herringbone. The infotainment system is top of the range, nestled in an impressive 12.3inch multimedia screen.
POWERHOUSE When you are packing 310kW of power and 600Nm of torque, you must put it somewhere awesome. Lexus bundled it up in an impressive 3.5l V6 engine. This twin-turbo engine has been designed especially for the new LS, delivering power and excellent fuel consumption simultaneously. 0 to 100km/h is achieved in just 5 seconds. This is also the first time a 10-speed automatic transmission has been coupled with a luxury sedan. The LS has an estimated fuel consumption of 9.5l per 100km, making it a formidable contender in its range.
THE PRICE TAG As with all good things in life, there is a price tag attached to the LS 500, clocking in at R2 141 400. A temporary pinch will result in your pleasure that the LS will forever embed in you. The LS 500 comes with a 7 year/105 000km warranty with a full maintenance plan. SV

olkswagen’s Big Friendly Giant, the marvellous Touareg, is back at it again. This year we saw a facelift and several other improvements on this much-loved model.
THE FACE Since the Touareg first launched back in 2002 with the firstgeneration model, we have been mesmerised by its sheer size, as well as all the other features it brings to the table, both from an aesthetics and performance point of view. Sixteen years down the line, Volkswagen is still captivating our minds — the front grille on the third-generation model has been extended to create a full face that blends into the headlights; the smooth lines stretch from front to back to create a much sportier look, similar to the Audi Q family; and LED technology has been used for the taillight clusters. With a formidable 190kW delivered by the V6 TDI engine, drivers are in for a treat. The aluminium-steel body weighs in at 106kg less than its predecessor, with an additional 113 litres of luggage space.
cockpit' for the first time in this model. The digital cockpit has been merged with the Discover Premium infotainment system, giving us, in their words, ‘the blueprint for tomorrow’s digital interior today'. The fully digitalised system brings together all the information, communication and entertainment aspects of the car, all in one digital operating system with barely any traditional buttons or switches.
THE INTERIOR The interior reflects deluxe refinement at its best. The glass covered 'innovision cockpit’ coupled with aluminium and chrome finishes throughout the cabin creates an environment where you feel right at home, in the lap of luxury. The Touareg also houses the largest panoramic sliding roof within the VW family — a great feature for scenic road trips.
