We’re devoted to the classic. But reject the status quo. We keep the best of the past. The best watchmaking practices, the best designs. And push the boundaries of what’s new. Born for a purpose. Field-tested to the extreme. For those who are up for anything. Those who face their fears. Those who reinvent themselves every day. A TUDOR is #BornToDare

At the same time, we’re thrilled to have our now-current Winter edition in your home with tons of readworthy features, a perfect companion for a snuggle alongside the fireplace. Hot restaurants and events keep us on our toes, a threesome of Emile Joubert’s favourite wines to keep us company, and now’s the time to start planning your next adventure trip for the coming months, with loads more thought provoking and inspiring pieces to keep our minds fresh and active to avoid falling deep into hibernation. Good news: We’re so excited to announce that we have partnered with Greenpop and have committed to planting 50 trees per edition of Southern Vines!

Greenpop is a nonprofit organisation on a mission to (re)connect people with our planet. They plant trees, grow food, educate people and have fun doing it! They work on urban greening, reforestation, and food growing projects, and educate people through practical workshops. Greenpop was founded in 2010 and has since planted almost 80 000 trees at schools and other urban sites as well as forests and farms across South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. FOR WOMEN

Bulgari - Rose Goldea From its olfactive signature to its gold bottle, Rose Goldea created by perfumer Alberto Morillas, incarnates femininity and seduction in a blend of balsamic and grounding woody accords with the emphasis on Damascus rose.

MOST WANTED!

Bulgari Splendida Iris D’Or

Issey Miyake – Pure An enchanting variation of the original, Issey Miyake – Pure, is a fresh floral-aquatic scent created from Maritima and floral notes of Lily-of-the-Valley and Orange Blossom, combined with a radiant bouquet of white feminine flowers, based on a woody and vibrating cashmeran.

A juxtaposition of jasmine combined with dry wood, this Sophie Labbe creation deploys a hypnotic effect, amplified by sweet notes of milky almond satin.

Elie Saab - Resort Collection Dior J’adore A tribute to Christian Dior’s passion for flowers, J’adore is a symbol of sophistication, glamour and femininity in a unique and harmonious floral bouquet with a soft exotic touch. In the words of Perfumer François Demachy “J’adore invents a flower that doesn’t exist, an ideal.”

A fragrance created in the spirit of a Couture collection by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian reminiscent of the sea: floral, solar and fruity, this creation bursts with sensuality and indulgence.

Zadig & Voltaire Signed by perfumer duo Sidonie Lancesseur and Michel Almairac, the French fashion house fragrance contains notes of pink pepper, Sambac jasmine, milky chestnut cream, vanilla and sandalwood.

FOR MEN

The art of fragrance design today is all about the subliminal sense of prosperity, comfort and nostalgia. This winter we take a look at the most explosive elixirs, from noteworthy fusions to new scents, for men and women.

Azzaro Wanted Made for a man who dares to challenge his destiny, is desired by women and envied by men. Addictive and irresistible, this spicy-woody-citrus fragrance was created by Fabrice Pellegrin using sustainable ingredients.

John Varvatos - Artisan Aqua Fragrance Opening with a citrus cocktail of fresh green harmony, giving way to a darker more evocative scent as it dries down, this Mediterraneaninspired fragrance is a lighter fragrance than its antecedent inspired by summer.

Dior Sauvage An unmistakably masculine fragrance created by François Demachy for Dior, Sauvage is bursting with the juicy freshness of Calabrian Bergamot and a powerful woody trail – raw and noble at the same time.

Bulgari Man Black Orient

Zadig & Voltaire This is Him! by Zadig & Voltaire, formed by famous perfumers Nathalie Lorson and Aurelien Guichard, has a strong heart of vanilla-incense mixed with the rock trail of sandalwood.

Sensual and mysterious, this rare fragrance created by Alberto Morillas combines rich notes of rum and peppery cardamom, with the opulence of Taif rose and the strength of oud and leather accents to round off its masculinity.

ART SCENE

Despite the distinct differences between these three South African masters - a painter, a sculptor and a digital artist, they share a common thread - their interest in the subtleties of the human psyche. JANKO DE BEER The recent work of Janko De Beer can only be described as masteries of motion, texture and form, depicting figures from borrowed organic ocean material. Metal armatures influenced by the rules of contemporary futurism are shrouded in dried bull kelp and transformed into rich, unusual bronze sculptures. A Cape Town based artist, practising advocate of law, Janko is well established, with a substantial international following and his work has sold to private collectors in Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco, England and Dubai. Unique, outspoken and not easily forgotten, his horse themed series titled Equus encapsulates the mythical relationship between horses and humans. ART WHAT’S HOT

IAN SKENE A self-taught surrealist, Ian challenges the predominance of pop art better known as a contemporary collage. Reconstructing reality through his lens, he creates visually dynamic hybrids teetering towards candid, street photography. Using a mix of portraits and foliage, his subject matter is simultaneously serious and tongue-in-cheek; a technique that is deeply referential of collage. Via the assemblage of different objects and images, collage interrogates the fundamental concept of what it is to create art, whilst offering a prismatic reflection of social change. Ian explores the spaces between dream and reality, allowing the unconscious to express itself. PASCALE CHANDLER Still life has the rather unfortunate reputation in the contemporary art world of possessing a somewhat suburban approach, but Belgianborn, Durban resident, Pascale Chandler suffers none of these maladies. A master at her chosen medium - good old fashion oil paint - Pascale’s interpretations of age-old subjects through long lines and loose brush strokes, make everything seem like a misty dream. Horses in her recent work speak to the vulnerability and fragility of the human soul, inverting their traditional association of power, victory and virility - hence the depiction of the skeletal architecture of their anatomy. Pascale’s work can be found at the StateoftheART Gallery in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town www.stateoftheart-gallery.com SV

BY JACQUELINE MILLS

MOJO THERAPY

oused on the ground floor of the lustrous Mojo Hotel, the space has been transfigured into a hybrid eclecticurban street plaza made up of designer retail stalls, food vendors, bars, a fresh goods market, a live entertainment stage and a wellness zone. Boasting over 80 stalls in a 2000sqm space, the novel piazza integrates the city streets with views of the palm-lined Promenade and Atlantic coastline. Conceived and developed by mastermind trio Graeme Robinson, Tara Lerner and Robbie Lessem, furthermore custodians of the Mojo Hotel; the space is a global food infusion of varying nationalities with a healthy selection of trending retail one-stop shops.

Retail vendors will be focused on both local and international labels from clothing to gifts and jewellery to homeware. Among them, clothing and accessories from Dammit Janet clothing, Sexy Bum Bikinis, Shika Africa and Shwe-Shwe, as well as King Kong’s leather goods, Matsidiso handmade shoes, Just a Rumour beaded jewellery, King of Denim’s ethically created jeans, Vanilla Tree Indo-African clothing, Modern and Tribal’s Turkish-inspired decor, Kwaai Galleries handmade gifts and homeware.

MOJO MOGULS The design, a culmination by Indigo Fusion and Jade and Ginja, was inspired by street markets globally and draws in the Art Deco elements of the surrounding architecture in contrast with contemporary metallic, natural wood with an industrial background. The retail area faces outwards onto the pavement, inwards towards the central bar and has a sea-facing seating area. When speaking about their new development, Graeme and Robbie respectively said “Mojo Market has been carefully curated to offer an interesting mix of lifestyle, food and retail. It isn’t a farmer’s market; it has the energy of a city.” SV

MOJO NOSH-UP The food fragment ranges from fresh and healthy to exotic and includes vendors such as Manga Sushi, Kubu African Grill, The Mussel Monger, Argies Argentinian Grill, TeAwesome Tea, The Candy Shoppe, IYO Burger, Chilo and Hokey Poke, among others. To add, Beet Box will be serving gardenfresh health juices and salads, and Cape Point Bakery will be baking up a warm storm on site. Newly acquainted with the Atlantic Seaboard, iconic American ice-cream brand Baskin-Robins will be a permanent fixture at Mojo, as will the likes of Bagel & Blend who plan to showcase artisanal roasters including Deluxe, Baseline, Hazz, Origin, Za Cafe and their Mojo inhouse blend roasted on site.

osjes Wine Estate is nestled in the beautiful Breede River Valley, and, with its dramatic setting between two mountain ranges, it’s a location worthy of a day trip out of town. There’s lots to do at the estate, which is a working olive, grape, peach and flower farm, and visitors can enjoy walks through the fynbos or in the beautifully landscaped gardens. The highlight for many though is a peek at the architectural masterpiece that is the chapel, or a taste of the sumptuous flavours served up at the newly opened restaurant, Bosjes Kombuis.

EXPLORE One of the estate’s most striking features is its beautiful chapel. Inspired by Psalm 36:7, the unique structure, with its dramatic curved roof, was designed by Steyn Studio of London and was created to look as though it rests lightly on the ponds of water that lie in front of it. From inside, there are views of the surrounding valley and the Slanghoek and Waaihoek mountains, providing a gorgeous backdrop through the glass

walls. Outside the chapel lies the peaceful garden, with a sculptural water feature at its centre. It also includes an elevated labyrinth, with a gorgeous view from the top, and an ideal spot to pause and take a moment to reflect and soak up the scenery. If you’re feeling energetic, there are two gentle hiking trails on the estate. One is five kilometres, while the other is 12 kilometres long, and birdwatchers will enjoy the opportunity to see the farm’s population of guinea fowls or the occasional sunbird. It’s also possible to spot ostrich, zebra and bontebok on the trails. Overnight guests are welcomed to the guesthouse, which is an old barn that has been converted into five luxury suites. The interiors

Designed by Coetzee Steyn, and styled by interior designer Liam Mooney, the restaurant is modern and comfortable - think custommade wooden furniture, tasteful lighting and indoor plants. On the terrace is a mural created by artists Michael Chandler and Lucie de Moyencourt, which is made from hundreds of blue and white tiles painted with different species of flora and fauna and inspired by actual pieces of porcelain that were dug up on the estate. The menu was designed to feel rustic and home-cooked, but the dishes have a sophisticated touch without feeling fussy. For something meaty, choose between dishes like a beef burger with an indulgent twist, served with camembert, caramelised onions, crispy bacon and hand cut fries, or the lamb cutlets with tabbouleh salad and cucumber raita. Finish off with local cheeses and farm pickles, or, if you prefer something sweet, try a homemade ice cream, a comforting, classic malva pudding or a decadent almond panna cotta with poached pears and homemade shortbread. If you don’t have time for a fullon lunch or dinner, there’s also an open-air tea garden near the chapel, which serves a selection of cakes and sandwiches and is the perfect spot for a post-stroll through the grounds. HOKEY POKE Located in the city bowl, Hokey Poke is a hip new spot offering something fresh to the Cape Town dining scene. It’s the first of its kind, serving Hawaiian poké dishes. On the menu, there are six house dishes, including tuna with edamame beans, avocado, mango, crispy onions, pickled ginger and furikake seasoning; and bulgogi beef with pickled pear, sprouts, radish, mint and crushed pistachios. Alternatively, you can opt for the build-your-own option, where you choose your base (think choices like sticky rice, kale slaw, and baby leaves), protein (take your pick from tuna, salmon, prawn, tofu, chicken and beef) and a range of toppings and garnishes, and sauces like wasabi mayo, hot sauce, and lime and yuzu dressing, to create a bowl of flavours suited to your mood and palette. uilt in the late 1940s, and extended over several generations, this scenic abode is comparable to an English manor house offering versatile, historic living in a gloriously appointed space – a home away from home, one that invites a more elegant, relaxed pace of living and one with a marvellous sense of timeless beauty. A travertine stone hallway opens into an English-style drawing room. Art works its magic with layered detail in Persian rugs and the oversized ginger jars stacked together on a circular table with a mighty arrangement of fresh green foliage. Beautiful pendant and chandelier light fittings offer a contemporary twist without compromising the grand British style of the decor.

This indoor terrace, a haven with an outside location, joins the spacious patio that basks in fresh air and sunshine. The heated pool is a focal point of the house, with different areas from which to entertain or simply relax. Its L-shape is hugged by the house and is truly evocative of a more genteel era. A floodlit tennis court is positioned close by for those long, lazy lunches and tennis evenings.

Comfort is key in the lounge area. Open plan and inviting, the large space allows pattern to play a primary role with a bold, flamboyant style. Sumptuous, overstuffed sofas in bright canary yellow offer a social ambience and the elaborate chandeliers give a chic edge to English countryside comfort. Long glass windows offer panoramic views of the garden and give a sweeping sense of space.

Heavily framed oil paintings adorn the dining room walls and dark polished furniture brings balance and brevity to the room with its ornate heaviness. Silk damask fabrics in cream and melon give a delicious punch to the room and lend a historic feel borrowed from 18th-century English country interiors. The dining room leads out to a covered terrace that flows easily onto a poolside patio. A mix of plump sofas with outdoor wicker upholstered in faded prints and pastels tempers the structured lines of the furniture and meets the bright outdoor light with gentle softness.

A fabulous ‘Victorian’ bedroom suite leads to the garden. Red drapes and Persian rugs complement the grandeur of the four-poster bed. Its historic correctness is perfect, and the bed’s chunky layers, scalloped linen and colours give authenticity. The collection of pictures on the walls together with the ornate carvings and heavy metal trim on the wardrobes produce a striking period piece. Upstairs leads to a grand loft-style master suite and a bathroom celebrating thatched architecture. Amidst the ‘his and hers’ space, a porcelain tub takes its rightful place in the middle with perfect symmetry created by heavy cupboards on either side. Raw wood and thatch materials combined with softly textured flooring are a wonderful combination that spells luxury. Beautiful views are framed by doors leading out to a private terrace for this secret hideaway of a bedroom. amed after a neighbouring chimney stack, this opulent Georgian beauty’s apt structure stacks one exciting visual surprise upon the next with multiple levels of intricate Victorian fretwork detail. Downstairs cossets divine culinary splendour with a luxurious bar and brasserie. A unique private members-only club located upstairs incorporates a lounge, verandah, bar and three meeting rooms. Interior designer and co-owner of The Stack, Sarah Ord of Sarah Ord Interiors designed and decorated the winsome property and her talent and signature style is evident throughout. Says Sarah, “The overall look and feel is playful and spirited while retaining the glamour of the architecture”, and it’s evident at first glance that The Stack promises something very different.

LOOKS REALLY DO COUNT The Stack’s night lit exterior is reminiscent of an opulent neo-Georgian Harvard University style fraternity house. Crisp green foliage beckons, intimately framing its ivy-league entrance with the symmetry of a Georgian style garden created in a bygone era. Appealing verandah furniture is blacktie – black lacquered cane furniture against crisp white walls paired with contemporary geometric fabrics and quirky side tables in acidic primaries. All elements work together to create visual excitement that adds vigorous character, complimenting the grace of sublime historic architecture.

and adds movement and texture as well as providing a neutral palette against which the brighter colours contrast. A ceiling medallion and chandelier offer an architectural focal point reminiscent of the property’s former 19th-century glory when medallions were used to protect the ceiling from burns caused by candles in the candlelit chandelier. This room captures the allure of a classic ballroom made all the more authentic with soft sconce lighting and traditional wooden floors. The original, beautifully restored Victorian fireplace reigns supreme. A contemporary artwork in punchy yellow that hangs above, works the room like a film director on his own set. “Artworks are rotated to maximise visual interest and this one, as well as all the others, was hung on consignment from Ebony. When an artwork is sold, we’ll change the look with another piece.” Says Sarah.

YES, LET’S DRINK TO THAT Colour is The Stacks definitive style. The bar area’s non-conformist and fun energy is the perfect act, with shocking fuschia’s entertaining Saturday Night Live style delivery bringing some famous Hollywood fabulousness home to Cape Town to party with its rich partner, intense turquoise. It’s a vibrant setting befitting those seeking edgy comfort and unconventional glamour. Such dominant, yet cheerfully intense upholstery on plush bar seating shouts out its call to action - striking fuschia pink is thought to uplift our spirits during times of emotional angst, and the turquoise lends expression. The happy factor induces a vibe that’s slick, playful and also promisingly delicious. It’s where appetisers and creamy cocktails marry to spin unusual tastes around the palate with lots of time for more.

OFFBEAT AND ON THE WALL Deep indigo blue walls contrast against crisp white cornices, mouldings and ceilings and strong patterns. The members’ bar displays a malachite-green wallpaper coupled with horizontal zebra striped columns offering revellers a truly ‘otherworldly’ experience. Comfortable seating, symmetrically arranged, gestures order and a sense of tradition with an official layout. While fun is the name of the game, calm, solid sophistication rules.

MEMBER’S ONLY It’s worth mentioning that the route to the member’s private lounge is via an original grandiose wooden staircase with railings and is a sight to behold. Leopard print carpeting prepares for a further kaleidoscope of colour in the lounge to impress the most valiant censor. The leopard print, a gutsy choice of pattern, symbolic of colonial stamina and luxury, works to support the design as a whole and the eclectic choice of artwork blends to create a unified look. Intimate seating areas collect to form little breakaway groups where each piece of furniture has been carefully selected for its special character. An odd rattan chair serves as a resting place for an easily accessible book collection. Bright woven baskets stand taller than vases near a couple of sweet golden Victorian easy chairs, innovately upholstered in indigo blue fabric to match the walls.

Traditional blue upholstered seating is given a fanciful twist with each alternating chair covered in flamboyant jungle print fabric. Artworks are ethnic and diverse with beaded detail and a playful feel. The Screening room is the ultimate marriage between boardroom and birthday bash bliss and advertises its benefits through its impressive visual translation. It’s a sparkly, youthful theme that induces a dance of joy which flows through The Stack happily. SV

NAMES DARLING, NAMES Named, based on their sizes, The Cuddle, The Huddle and The Screening meeting rooms offer plush corporate and entertainment spaces that promote a sense of joy and effortless productivity. The Cuddle room’s definitive turquoise walls and peach upholstery are an interesting contrast and a Mad Hatter type oversized bowl and lamp add a whimsical, fantastical feel to get those creative juices flowing. The Huddle room’s carefully chosen décor and artwork are highly unusual and again, bright colours are consistent. A distressed cabinet offers the eye some textural relief and a unique raspberry

Bathrooms have acquired a new voice. So if you’re planning on remodelling, look no further. New design trends are experiencing a move towards health and wellness with functional creativity that’s characterful and very playful. BY LAURA JONES. PHOTOGRAPHS SUPPLIED BY BESPOKE BATHROOMS & DURAVIT

South African interior designer and owner of Bespoke Bathrooms, Lisa Millbacher reveals some gorgeous international bathroom tips for 2017/18 from a recent visit to a bathroom fair in Frankfurt. Take a look at these top trends for some extravagant design inspiration.

HANGING FREE Floating flat-fronted cabinetry is a popular new trend. It’s fuss free with a strong visual translation that gives the effect of clinical practicality. Clean, neat edges and crisp long lines create a formal, orderly arrangement that achieves a modern feel. Pull-out storage gives an even more contemporary look, and a large panel of glass above adds a special touch of luxury. Duravit

BRING OUT THE BRIGHTS A bold combination of modern and retro finishes create a dynamic atmosphere with flashes of strong colour. Interior shower panels run rebellious stripes with some rock n’ roll attitude for a look that’s fresh and unique. Interesting downward directional verticals on the colour panels offer the eye some relief from the horizontal wooden panelled ceiling and beams. These few bold hues are used in single blocks, particularly because the bathroom is small – ideal, especially to create an eyecatching feature colour that doesn’t overwhelm the room. The shower doors are seamless, taking the eye further into the space adding a glossy, luxurious feel.

THE RISE AND SHINE OF LIGHT South African designers are drawing inspiration from an abundance of natural sunshine and beautiful views now more than ever. This is evident in the generous use of natural materials such as cork, ceramics and timber to enhance the bathroom experience. Dark, glossy finishes give a rich, luxurious feeling and reflective surfaces possess magical, space-enhancing powers that make a huge difference in a bathroom. Shine amplifies light levels and surfaces are super water-resistant and easy to clean. A small boutique hotel table placed next to the tub is the perfect bath accessory. Bespoke Bathrooms

WITH THE GRAIN Wood loves winter. Not only does it add character, but it’s a great insulator too, so it’ll help keep those steamy winter bathroom sessions warmer for longer. Combined with sophisticated porcelain subway tiles, colourful and detailed flooring, art nouveau lamps and a glass splash-back, the look is eclectic and somewhat quirky.

Porcelain basins, with new innovative technology, have very thin rims so that beautiful curves can be formed to create a clear and fine design with shapes that work with vanity tops. Wooden finishes combined with a his and hers basin set are worthwhile especially since the global mega-trend of wellness-inspired bathrooms supports relaxation and being able to personalise your own space.

CENTRE STAGE Free standing baths can be pushed against the wall for a space-saving solution but those that show a particularly beautiful exterior base or shell deserve the most prominent space in a larger bathroom. Beautiful organic curves contrast against rectangular wooden shutters that overlook greenery and natural light. There’s a significant lack of wall tiles and grout lines with alternative solutions such as rich colour and wooden flooring that wrap together effortlessly.

TILE DESIGN The global trend of shower toilets continues as personal hygiene plays a key role in well-being. This is another fantastic solution for bathrooms without space for a separate bidet and toilet. Continuity of wall and floor finishes such as wrapping the floor finish up the walls creates a sense of playfulness and of course, alternative flooring plays a major role. Looking to artisanal hand-made tiles, this Moroccan/ Mediterranean floor adds a startlingly brave boost of colour that is a work of art in itself. It’s a beautiful solution that adds texture and interest to an all-white bathroom. Enter the celebratory trend of coveted hand-made pieces with a onceoff design that is truly the hallmark of designer style.

Bespoke Bathrooms

Bespoke Bathrooms

A SPLASH OF DRAMA The tacticle, textured feeling of things gives a truly relaxing bathroom experience. Think textured wallcoverings like intensely patterned wallpaper with a strong statement design to inject life into your bathroom theme. Next year’s shades are rich and playful. Consider incorporating a bold hue from the colourway of your wallpaper and painting one wall to contrast against the pattern to create something that really stands out.

In a nutshell, bathrooms will enjoy straight lines, masonry, ceramics and lots of creative combos. Lisa sums it up, “Professionally planning and designing your space should include all aspects of design, especially working with an architectural language that is true to the existing building, with special consideration around lighting and using the space as ergonomically as possible.” SV www.bespokebathrooms.co.za

PROMOTION

L’ART DE VIVRE The art of living, French style To understand the art of French living, you only need to visit a Roche Bobois store, once. And the good news is, you don’t need to reside on the Riviera to do so.

O

ne of the world leaders in designer French furniture with a distribution of over 250 showrooms worldwide, Roche Bobois plans to open a second store in South Africa this year - following their Cape Town store launch in 2015, and the demand in Africa. When speaking about their South African footprint, Gilles Bonan, CEO of Roche Bobois, said “Cape Town is the first step. Of course, we are very ambitious for this country; Johannesburg is a natural second step and then we’ll look at possibly opening another 2 stores in South Africa in the next few years.” Roche Bobois works closely with globally renowned designers including Ora Ito, Cédric Ragot, Sacha Lakic, Christophe Delcourt and Stephen Burks; as well as with haute couture fashion houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Lacroix and Missoni Home.

SAVOIR FAIRE

to mood boards and 3D samples, their designers assist clients in the comfort of their homes – ultimately, a canvas for their customised creations.

CULTURE IS CORE Since its inception, Roche Bobois has never stopped promoting art, in fact, promoting artist’s forms part of their ethos. In March this year, their Cape Town showroom exhibited the work of the photographer Krisjan Rossouw with a view to promoting South African artists on the international scene. Over the next few months Roche Bobois’ plan to open a gallery in Monaco, followed by a second one in Italy; and in Cape Town and Johannesburg their showroom walls will be adorned with local artists work for all to see. Roche Bobois brings together inspiration, knowhow and people. Art and life. To make a piece of furniture means to create an “art de vivre”.

The premise of the brand is their belief that savoir faire and design go hand in hand. Exclusively manufactured in Europe, they launch a new range twice a year, and their pieces are customisable in a variety of dimensions, colours, leathers, woods and a variety of other finishes. Roche Bobois offers both modern and classic collections: Les Contemporains is a range of bold and innovative furniture that draws inspiration from the modernist classics, while Nouveaux Classiques pays homage to France’s heritage of artisan cabinet-making as well as neo-industrial trends. A lot of hard work and just as much passion goes into the making of each Roche Bobois piece. Each piece has its own unique personality, combining the talent, boldness and inventiveness of a designer, the know-how and passion of the craftspeople, and the clients own style and creativity.

IT’S PERSONAL Roche Bobois’ offering is completely bespoke, from conceptualisation to execution, and exigency. Starting with in-store advice, and moving on

THE POWER OF

As it turns out, spending time in green spaces - even those within a city - has long-term health benefits. So, force yourself outside this winter, for the sake of your wellbeing.

A

BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

ccording to a new study* conducted by researchers at the Universities of York and Edinburgh and published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, walking between busy urban environments and green spaces causes changes in levels of excitement, engagement and frustration. The study was conducted as part of a larger research project looking at the role that the urban environment plays in one’s general wellbeing. During the study, volunteers wore electroencephalography (EEG) head-sets, which recorded their brain activity while walking between busy and green urban spaces. The results of the study, which also involved self-reported measures and interviews, revealed that the volunteers typically found the green spaces to be calmer and quieter, suggesting that spending time in these spaces could have some

72 Motivation.indd 72

very real benefits when it comes to improving mental wellbeing. The researchers say that the findings show that urban green spaces have an important part to play in reducing the stress often felt in urban settings and that maintaining access to green spaces could be a low-cost contributor to long-term health. With winter upon us, it can be quite tempting to stay indoors, but fortunately, Cape Town has an abundance of green spaces that are easily accessible from the city. These gems are among our favourites‌

CONSTANTIA GREENBELT Nestled right in the suburbs, the greenbelt is made up of several walking trails, and really is the ideal area for a short stroll if you need a break and a breath of fresh air. The Alphen Trail runs next to the Diep River, and only takes about half an hour, while the Silverhurst Trail is slightly longer, and just as pretty

with its leafy pathways. Both of these trails are easily accessible, and there are a handful of other well-signposted options nearby. If the weather is really bad, warm up with a coffee or glass of wine afterwards!

STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY BOTANICAL GARDEN If you’re keen to get out of Cape Town for a few hours and find yourself in the winelands, pop into the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden in the centre of town. With so much else to do in Stellenbosch and its surrounds, you’d be forgiven for missing the garden, but this little gem is well worth a visit. It’s the oldest university botanical garden in the country and houses a diverse collection of both indigenous and exotic plants. Two arid glasshouses and a tropical glasshouse are open to the public and the garden is arranged into several themed sections, including a bonsai collection, rockeries, a fern house and water lily ponds. There’s also a cosy restaurant under an old red-flowering gum tree if you need some sustenance during your visit.

BABYLONSTOREN Also in the winelands, Babylonstoren is home to one of the most beautifully preserved gardens in the area. Spread over three and a half hectares, the garden is divided into 15 separate sections, including fruit, vegetables, berries, bees, a prickly pear maze and fragrant lawns, as well as a secluded path that runs along a stream. The layout of the garden has been meticulously designed and each of the 300 plant varietals is either edible or can be used for its medicinal value. The Greenhouse offers simple, no-fuss

meals made with fresh garden ingredients, while Babel Restaurant, which is housed in an old cow shed, also serves meals made with whatever is available in the garden so the menu changes with the seasons.

SHEILAM CACTUS AND SUCCULENT GARDEN A little further afield, Sheilam is located just outside Robertson and is a truly unique space. The garden and nursery boast around 2 000 plant species and is one of the best collections of its kind. Take a stroll through the garden to see plants in all shapes and sizes, from as far afield as Mexico, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina, as well as some local varieties indigenous to South Africa and Namibia. There are guided tours available, but be sure to book ahead. Not far from Sheilam is Mo & Rose Wine Bistro, which is also located in a gorgeous cactus garden well worth a look. A SPACE TO

From cleanses to silent meditation and spaces for ritual, wellness retreats are all the rage. What is the inspiration behind this approach to health, and what are the benefits of taking this particular kind of break? JENNIFER CAMPBELL

WELLNESS RETREATS

T

ime away should always be good for the soul - a chance to relax and recharge. There are now a growing number of spaces designed specifically with wellness in mind. Imagine a trip where your wellbeing is the top priority. Add a beautiful setting, special rituals, time to meditate, practice yoga, or simply be still in nature, and you have a retreat that will allow you to focus on yourself, even if just for a few blissful days.

CLEANSE Wellness retreats are growing in popularity in many places around the world, and says Claudia Rauber, founder of Phakalane, a centre in Hout Bay, “it seems that humanity is realising that the way we have been living is compromising our being. There is a greater urgency to do something about it, be more proactive

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat

and also heal before there is an illness, which is the body shouting at us that something is not in balance”. Phakalane offers cleansing retreats several times a year, which involve the consuming and making of fresh, organic juices and teas, as well as the practice of self-care rituals (like mouth oil pulling, dry body brushing, body oiling and cold showers), daily steaming rituals and rituals especially designed to help one find balance. Claudia explains that the rituals are based in African cosmology and “the cleanses ask each being to take responsibility for their own healing.” She goes on to say that people often choose individually designed retreats to mark specific moments in their life - a marriage, separation, an important life change, a birth, or death. The

RETREATS WELLNESS

inspiration behind the centre, says Claudia, is to “support the journey of becoming who we truly are, and that often takes releasing and letting go of layers of experiences. In this place, visitors can come to rest, to stop, to hear, to feel, to release what no longer serves them.” The idea is that the physical body can be used as a vehicle for this release through practices of cleansing and fasting.

REJUVENATE With the growing demand for spaces that allow people to rest and recover from daily stresses, more and more spas have extended their offering to incorporate treatments with a healing element. Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg Mountains near Clanwilliam offers three different wellness programmes to destress, detox and revitalise. The programmes, says spa manager Nikki Bouic, “are as unique as each individual we treat. The Spa at Bushmans Kloof is a peaceful sanctuary where one can surrender to the ancient mystical powers of the African landscape.” The idea behind the wellness retreat is to give guests the feeling that their senses have been rejuvenated, their spirits replenished and that they achieve deep inner peace and harmony. “We are dedicated to restore balance through the spa wellness programmes we offer,” says Nikki. She goes on to say that “research has shown that the wellness industry is growing twice as fast as any other sector. We believe that people are now more conscious about their health and wellbeing. They engage more in activities like meditation, detoxing, yoga and going away for retreats as a result of this.” Some physical

benefits of the programmes, says Nikki, include increased energy levels, better sleeping patterns, enhanced breathing techniques and reduced muscular pain in the neck, shoulders and back.

REFLECT With busy schedules and lifestyles that tend to be filled with to-do lists, there’s often little time left for quiet time and reflection. In McGregor, a sanctuary called Temenos (meaning “sacred space”) offers healing therapies and workshops in a tranquil garden setting. Although the retreat does not subscribe to any specific spiritual path, it embraces a universal spirituality and comprises several spaces especially created to deepen a sense of stillness such as a labyrinth, a forested spiral, and a garden library stocked with health and healing books. Visitors are invited to join early morning walks, yoga and daily meditation sessions. There is also a wide range of healing therapies available including massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, tension and trauma stress release, and Reiki. Temenos was established by Billy Kennedy 17 years ago when he transformed a run-down farmhouse on a barren stretch of veld into the beautiful sanctuary it is today. At its centre is a small chapel known as ‘The Little Way’ which is very popular for weddings, while The Well, the meditation room, is the ideal setting for regaining a sense of peace and tranquillity. The garden teems with birdlife and there are nature reserves within walking distance. "Guests choose to stay at Temenos for many reasons", says Billy, "but especially if one needs to rest and restore oneself. Most guests return time and time again to unwind in the stillness and simply be". SV

TASTE WINE

WINE FOR

thought Storytelling from our favourite wine connoisseur Emile Joubert as he shares his top three wine selections for the coming colder months.

A

recent visit by a delegation of MBA students from California had me thinking that our wine scene has an edge on the American industry. In one voice the Americans told me that back home – the world’s leading wine consuming nation – red blended wines were now becoming the big thing, with producers from sea to shining sea beginning to experiment with blends. Welcome to my world, I could say, comfortably introducing the Americans to a South African industry filled with red blends of such diversity and mix that they can be seen to truly reflect the rainbow nation. Those of us who started out drinking red wine in South Africa forty years ago probably began with reds such as Chateau Libertas and Tassenberg. Later on, here in the 1980’s, Meerlust Estate introduced blended Bordeaux varieties, and a short hop from then saw Cape Blends hit the scene with their foundation being a hefty chunk of Pinotage. (Note to Wine Geeks: I do know that Welgemeend Estate produced the first Bordeaux blend, okay?) Rhône Blends, concoctions of grapes like Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Tannat, became trés chic as the first hipster winemaker saw his tattoo scar heal, and from Calitzdorp way South Africa has seen a wave of Portuguese red blends. So, when it comes to mixing things up to produce individual wines where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, South Africa is, like, ‘out there’. One of my favourite blended red wines is also one of

the country’s most interesting. It comes from Hemelen-Aarde winery Bouchard Finlayson, probably more known for its brilliant Pinot Noir, but also responsible for a unique wine called Hannibal . The wine’s name gives a clue to its nature, and no, it is not Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter of human liver and fava beans fame. Go back 2 000 or so years when Hannibal the Carthaginian general was out to conquer France and Italy, and you’ll be on the right track. Hannibal, the wine, is a blend of Italian and French varieties. Despite a lifelong obsession with Burgundy, Bouchard Finlayson cellar master Peter Finlayson has a soft spot for Italian. So he came up with this blend of Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera, for the Italian effect which is given a bit of French flair with Pinot Noir and Mourvèdre. Sangiovese makes for 46% of the blend, with Pinot Noir coming in at 18%, and all this really is as interesting as it sounds. After harvest, each variety is given up to 16 months’ wood maturation before the cellar master deploys the magical art of blending each component before the final harmonious whole is reached. The Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2015 is from a stupendous vintage, and if you are wanting to try this wine for the first time or already have a committed physical relationship with it, the 2015 is the one to go for. South African Sangiovese tends to be

Eikendal in Stellenbosch

enormously over-powering and dense. But thrown together with these other juicy little bits, the variety commands this wine with the style, grace and deft of a chic, waltzing Italian gigolo - minus the underarm odour. The sap of berries and plums comes to mind when sipping this wine, and the Pinot Noir component brings a haunting feral muskiness, while the motley mix of other grapes, plus the extended wood maturation, adds all sorts of spice, bordering on the exotic. This is a great red wine and deserving of a top spot alongside South Africa’s more iconic blends as made by Kanonkop, Meerlust and Vergelegen. While Hemel-en-Aarde is also Ground Zero for Chardonnay, an unwooded Chardonnay from Stellenbosch producer Eikendal is currently my go-to easy-going white. Unwooded Chardonnays are growing in popularity as a result of white wine drinkers having recurring nightmares of their palates being battered by densely oaked Chardonnays in previous decades. But for this, more is required from the winemaker than just keeping the wine away from the barrel. With Chardonnay, terroir is all important. And if the wine is not going to wood, the post-harvest handling has to be on-song to ensure brisk freshness while maintaining the complexities Chardonnay is known for. Eikendal’s Janina 2016 is a great example of why these deforested Chardonnays are hitting the consumer’s sweet-spot. Crisp, brisk and fresh as a Llandudno bride at her first wedding, the wine also lets you experience the pretty complexities that Chardonnay is known for. Aromas of white flowers and almond shell lead to a palate exuding notes of lemony-limey citrus, a whack of grilled nuts and a beautiful clean finish.

This is an all-day drinking wine, but if there are oysters or sashimi around I’ll have my daily quota right there and then. As those butch medieval cross-dressers say in Game of Thrones, “winter is coming”. Well, it was supposed to be here, but with El Niňo and all that, one never knows here in the Cape. Not that I need winter for that great drink that is Port, possibly the most civilised of all those civilised wines Ernest Hemingway was alluding to when saying that good wine is the most civilised thing on earth. Port is made in the Douro Valley of Portugal, and here in South Africa, we produce Port-style wine. The best in the world actually, outside aforementioned Douro. Peter Bayly from Calitzdorp makes a killer Cape Vintage, the 2009 goes down especially well at the moment. The wine is made from a blend of three classic Port varieties, namely Touriga Naçional, Tinta Barroca and Souzão, grapes that just love the dry, hot baked earth of Calitzdorp. The grapes are fortified with neutral grape spirits at the early stage of fermentation to arrest the process, ensuring that most of the grapes’ natural sugar levels remain to caress the fruits’ vinous flavours while maturing in oak. Peter Bayly’s Cape Vintage has that typical Port whiff of Havana cigarbox and crushed mulberry, leading to an explosion in the mouth. It is sweet fruit, dense and unforgiving but with silky tannins and an expressive hit of white pepper, cardamom and dried red figs. Like all good Port-styled wines, it finishes with a lasting, dreamy cacophony of beautiful flavours and a perfumed presence lasting just about as long as a slow kiss from a fast woman. Drink it in big glasses, blue cheese and nuts optional. SV

he Silo Hotel is like no other space in Cape Town’s diverse cityscape. Rooted in history, it has undergone a transformation that is truly spectacular. The building towers over the V&A Waterfront, and thanks to its enormous and unique pillowed window bays, each room is surrounded by the city’s natural beauty, merging the outside with its lavish interiors.

THE HISTORY The Silo Hotel has been built in the grain elevator area of the historic grain silo complex at the waterfront, a building that was once the tallest in Sub-Saharan Africa when it was originally opened in 1924. The building was used industrially for almost 80 years and played an important role as an export facility and as part of an integral infrastructure to local agriculture and the economic workings of the Table Bay harbour. The building was made up of two parts, the storage silos, and the elevator tower, in which The Silo Hotel is now located, where the grain was received from the track shed and lifted to the top of the building to be weighed, cleaned, bagged, stored and distributed. In 2001, work at the silo stopped, and now, years later, the space has been transformed into a place of breathtaking luxury.

THE INTERIORS The hotel occupies six floors above what will become

The Deluxe Superior Lounge Area

the much-anticipated Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) later this year. There are seven categories of rooms, the largest of which is the penthouse, a lavish space on the top floor with triple aspect views and a spacious balcony. The royal suites have two bedrooms in each with views over the ocean, while the family suites look over the harbour and have a mezzanine level with two bedrooms. The deluxe superior suites spread out over three floors and boast spectacular five and a half metre tall pillowed glass windows, and the superior suites,

luxury and silo rooms all have their own particular charm. While the views from the rooms are all unrivalled, it is the interiors that are most striking. With designer Liz Biden at the helm, every detail has been magnificently crafted, and guests can expect surprising pops of colour, an eclectic mix of African art, and elements of classic glamour. Besides the rooms, guests are invited to enjoy the rooftop swimming pool and sky terrace, as well as a spa and gym facilities.

The two smaller rooms seat six in each, while the Wisdom Room, named after the first ship to ever take grain to Europe from the silo, can seat up to 22 guests. We’re not surprised at all the hype around The Silo hotel, it truly is a master design and interior collaboration like no other. SV

THE FOOD The luxury doesn’t end with the rooms, with three extraordinary spaces to choose from when it comes to dining. The Willaston Bar, named after the first ship to export grain from the original silo complex in 1924, has an impressive wine selection that includes both local and international options and makes an ideal setting for a relaxed drink. The menu is casual and contemporary, offering choices like cheese and charcuterie boards to accompany a sunset tipple. For something more formal, the Granary Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner in an elegant, yet eclectic setting. To really soak up the surrounding scenery, nothing beats the Silo Rooftop, where guests can sit around the pool and enjoy a cocktail, fresh oysters, a light salad or something Silo Rooftop

ith its rugged cliffs and pristine waters, Hermanus is the ultimate seaside getaway. Famous for its marine life, it’s become a must-see spot in whale-watching season, but its natural beauty and broad offering of fine food and wine means it’s a place to visit at any time of the year.

ENJOY THE OUTDOORS Although it’s best known for its whale-watching (the annual Whale Festival is held in September every year), Hermanus has more than its fair share of outdoor activities to offer. The beautiful blue waters make for ideal sea kayaking conditions, and while whales may be sighted off the shore in season, other marine life such as seals, penguins and seabirds can be seen throughout the year. If you’re in the mood for something a little more laid-back, there’s a kayak wine tour that offers guests the chance to paddle on the Hermanus lagoon, from the yacht club to the historic Mosaic Farm, where wine is served in the shade of milkwood trees. If, however, you prefer to stay on land, try one of the

area’s walking trails, of which there are a few to choose from. Fernkloof and Vogelgat nature reserves have some well-maintained hiking routes, while the popular Cliff Path, which stretches for 12 kilometres along the coast, offers scenic views over Walker Bay. There are also several mountain biking routes, which start at the Hemel en Aarde Village. Choose from easy trails for beginners and families to more difficult routes that will get your blood pumping with river crossings, steep ascents and jeep tracks. If you’re travelling with kids, you’ll be pleased to know that there are several relaxed beaches to choose from. Fick’s Pool is a pretty swimming spot, while Grotto Beach is also safe for swimming and stretches for almost 18 kilometres, which is perfect if you’re looking for privacy. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve Gardens offer plenty of lawn space and shade for a family-friendly picnic (check out the nursery nearby if you fall in love with the garden’s flora!) and the open-air museum at the old harbour is open all day and makes for an interesting walk with its displays of old boats and bokkom stands.

TASTE THE LOCAL FLAVOURS With its proximity to the sea, it’s no surprise that Hermanus has some great options to choose from when it comes to fresh seafood. For a seat right near the ocean, Bientang’s Cave is hard to beat. The restaurant is carved into an old cave once inhabited by a Koi Strandloper, and stretches out onto the rocks, with uninterrupted sea views, which are especially popular in whale season. In an equally beautiful setting, Harbour Rock is located at the top of a cliff overlooking the harbour and offers fresh seafood and sushi as well as a

number of locally produced wines. For more dramatic vistas, La Pentola boasts panoramic views over Walker Bay and specialises in international cuisine with a local twist using seasonal ingredients from the Overberg region. For something distinctly local, pay a visit to the Hermanuspietersfontein food and wine market, which is held every Saturday morning. There’s an abundance of excellent gourmet-style food on offer, from buffet breakfasts to local cheeses, fresh oysters, fish and chips and artisanal baked goods, along with complimentary wine tastings. Hermanus winelands

EXPLORE THE WINE ROUTE If you can pull yourself away from the beautiful seaside, the Hermanus Wine Route is well worth a visit. It winds through the very picturesque Hemel en Aarde region and is made up of about 15 wine farms, each offering high-quality wines in gorgeous settings. To taste a globally-acclaimed Pinot Noir surrounded by an indigenous flower conservancy, pop into Bouchard Finlayson. Only 22 hectares of the land is cultivated with vineyards, while the rest has been preserved for its natural biodiversity. As well as tasting the farm’s wines, guests can do guided nature walks through the estate where hikers may spot blue cranes, small buck

and mongoose. Another gem on this wine route is Creation, a gorgeous spot with a great food and wine pairing menu. They offer a variety of pairings from three courses to cheese and charcuterie and brunch, as well as a wine and chocolate option. For a bit of fun, try the ‘vineyard to glass’ tour on offer at Benguela Cove, which gives guests the chance to have a peek at the farming practices and learn about the grape growing cycles before a wine tasting. They also offer a private vineyard tour of the estate and vineyards for small groups, followed by a tasting overlooking the Bot River Lagoon, and a gourmet three-course meal. SV

ew Zealand is a land of dramatic landscapes and heaven for anyone who loves the outdoors. Whether you’re keen to try an extreme activity against a striking setting or prefer to take the slow road and taste the country’s fresh foods along the way, this little country has loads to offer.

SOAK UP THE SCENERY If you enjoy cycling, walking and hiking, you’ll find there’s no shortage of beautiful tracks and trails to explore. But whether you choose an active holiday, or prefer something more relaxed (the country can be easily explored by car), you’ll be able to surround yourself with some stunning scenery. New Zealand is home to 25 marine reserves and a diverse coastline that includes white sand beaches and good surfing conditions on the east coast, and black sand and wild cliffs on the west. Inland, both the North and South Islands boast gorgeous lakes, which can be explored by boat, or visited for the fishing and bird-watching opportunities they provide, while there are 14 national parks open to the public. In fact, parks and reserves make up more than a third of the country, making the natural wonders of the country (from volcanoes and boiling mud to glaciers and craters) very accessible.

EXTREME SEEKERS New Zealand is well known for its adventure travel, and for good reason. Bungee jumping is big - in fact, the country’s first commercial bungee operation was established back in the 80’s at the historic Kawarau Bridge near Queenstown. Now, if you’re into that sort of thing, you can jump off a range of bridges, roofs and platforms - from the Nevis bungee with a drop of 134 metres to the beautifully set Auckland Harbour Bridge, or the Taupo bungee above the Waikato River.

Caving is another leisure activity that has taken New Zealand by storm. The country has some of the world’s most spectacular caves and experienced spelunkers will enjoy some of the challenging systems, while beginners and firsttimers needn’t miss out, as there are some easy routes as well. Some caves are big enough to simply walk through, while others offer the chance to try black water rafting (look out for glow worms!). Serious spelunkers can try abseiling, roping and climbing. Both the North and South Islands have caving areas, and it’s easy to find an experienced operator to guide your underground adventure. If adventure travel is your cup of tea, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of opportunities to try the ultimate extreme activity - skydiving. The

GO LUXE A number of operators have taken the country’s travel scene to new levels of luxury. Try one of these bespoke experiences for something special… n Play golf on a cliff-top course in the Bay of Islands and Hawkes Bay n Sail around the coastline on a superyacht n Go skiing in the Southern Alps near Christchurch n Take a helicopter ride to Kaikoura, home to large populations of Humpback and Sperm Whales n Go on a tailor-made fly-fishing trip with a local guide or take a helicopter ride to an untouched section of river n Hire a private guide and explore traditional Māori cuisine and culture in Northland, Auckland and Rotorua

adrenalin rush won’t disappoint, and the gorgeous landscape of the country adds an extra special element. Depending on where you choose to go, you can see snowcapped mountains, bright blue lakes, volcanoes, mountains and forests.

WINE AND DINE Surely one of the best parts of international travel is experiencing the unique culinary surprises a new country has to offer, and New Zealand is no different. The country boasts loads of fresh produce, and a lot of the local farmers open their fields to visitors, allowing them to pick their own fruits and berries during certain seasons. If you’re driving through the countryside, look out for roadside stalls selling fresh fruits and veggies, often with an honesty box in which you can leave your payment! For a taste of something unique to New Zealand, try hāngī, food cooked in a traditional Māori method. Hāngī food was

traditionally wrapped in flax leaves and slow cooked on hot stones in a hole in the ground. Nowadays, the process is used to prepare a range of foods, from root vegetables and fish to meats like pork and mutton, which become very tender and tasty during the slow cooking process. There are also a number of foodie events held throughout the year, one of the largest of which is Visa Wellington On a Plate. It’s held for two weeks in August and involves a jam-packed programme of culinary events. Beervana, also hosted in Wellington, is an annual beer festival, where visitors can enjoy the latest from local breweries as well as some international brews. Wine-lovers will enjoy the country’s various wine routes - the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail stretches from Napier on the North Island, to Blenheim in the South Island, and covers over 120 cellars along the way, as well as some beautiful scenery. There’s also the option of exploring the winelands in

the Upper South Island near Christchurch, where you can incorporate a visit to some hot springs into your trip, while the Central North Island is known for its dramatic landscape of lakes, hot geysers and forests. SV

ou’ve watched keelboats sashay around buoys, their crews pinching lines and pulling off wellchoreographed manoeuvres. There’s no denying the appeal of commandeering such beasts, and the feeling of exhilaration and a heightened sense of satisfaction this super sport promises. While sailing can appear mindnumbingly complex and incredibly intimidating, fortunately, you don’t need years of practice and ten million rand in your bank account to get started. Here we tell you how to minimise the learning curve and maximise on the fun.

GO WITH THE FLOW Although the False Bay coast tender’s a few favourable vantage points such as Milnerton and the V&A Harbour, sailing is not a spectator friendly sport for obvious reasons, which is why Cape Town based yacht clubs encourage new comers with the latitude of courtesy voyages. If you’re completely fresh off the boat, we’d suggest you book a day’s sailing with a trained professional, where initially, the only input required is keeping the crew company and become acquainted with the rising and

falling of the swell, which is an art in itself no matter how determined you are to sail. The biggest and most active sailing club in the southern hemisphere is undoubtedly The Royal Cape Yacht Club (on our doorstep), followed by more modest, yet equally welcoming clubs such as False Bay Yacht Club in Simon’s Town, the Hout Bay Yacht Club and the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club. Royal Cape (RCYC) sail all year round, regatta in the summer and race most weekends, and although they have over 2000 members on their register, only 369 actually own keelboats, and naturally, these fortunate custodians need crews to sail and race. From October through to March, RCYC invites non-club members to participate in their complimentary Twilight Racing Series weekly on a Wednesday evening, which sees between 50 and 70 boats on the evening waters. In addition, RCYC has a thriving Academy aimed at non-club members between the ages of 16 and 23 wishing to try their hand at sailing. With the focus on disadvantaged youth, the pro bono programme facilitates young adults from all backgrounds, with beginner trips on Sunday, and the more advanced trips on Saturdays.

For children below the ages of 16, who are not yet physiologically mature enough to man a large yacht, dingy sailing on dams is the best way to get started. Non-members can visit RCYC up to six times before joining; at which stage they require member endorsement in order to join the club. The joining fees are subjectively calculated depending on a number of criteria such as whether one resides locally or abroad, and whether they own a yacht, etc. In addition to the hands-on deck approach, but not imperative to becoming a club or crew member, amateurs can opt to study for their skipper’s license at a number of sailing schools in Cape Town. There is a multitude of institutions that offer both short and long

With thousands of kilometres of coastline, Cape Town’s sailing locations are a plenty, with the most active area being Table Bay for Keelboat sailing, Langebaan for cruising waters and Zeekoevlei and Zandvlei for youngsters wanting to dingy. Unique locations along the Cape Coast give way to the discovery of ship wrecks, mystical kelp forests and reefs, not to mention the diversification of marine life off shores which invariably include sightings of dolphins, tropical fish, penguins and whales. With Cape Town being home to the largest manufacturer of Catamarans in the Southern Hemisphere there has also been a significant increase in the demand for young sailing enthusiasts to train as crew members for yacht remittance to overseas patrons.

ROCKING THE BOAT The False Bay yacht club hosts the largest and most spirited event namely the annual Spring Regatta. Growing in popularity over the past five years, the event that takes place around the end of September each year is supported by all the local yacht clubs. In addition, the Cape Town Boat Show at the V&A Waterfront in October is also worth a visit. SV

M

ercedes-Benz has used the S-Class to set the benchmark for luxury sophistication for everyday living however now with the new S 500 Cabriolet it’s not just about luxury living, it’s also about defying the rules of the convertible.

BLOWN AWAY Newton taught us the laws of physics, what goes up, must come down. Its science, no one can question that, and for a long time, the same went for why convertibles aren’t always considered that comfortable. Your hair is guaranteed to go into several directions, your ears will pop at some point and don’t practice this past time activity without wearing the right clothes. Now take all you know, and throw it out the window (or roof). Mercedes-Benz has taken what we think we know and converted it into what we should know. The advanced warmth and wind protection offered by the S 500 Cabriolet transports you to a place where you can drive comfortably with the top down at 120km/h.

CAPTURING LUXURY The essence of luxury has 2 doors and 4 seats (or at least in this case). The exterior design features have truly captured this luxurious cabriolet with a frame that is sleek and refined from bonnet to boot.

Trimmings like the black diamond radiator grille that houses the classic Mercedes-Benz star and the chrome accents gives the S-Class Cabriolet a sporty yet sophisticated feel. Moving the show inside you are greeted with a symphony of class. The soft signature Mercedes-Benz leather finishes are rounded off with chrome carried to the inside to complete the sporty feel you would expect in a top of the range convertible.

SAFE AND SOUND Like something straight out of the movies, night time driving is assisted with Night View Assist that kicks in when there are no street lights and pedestrians on the side of the road. This is displayed in your instrument cluster on a small screen outlining pedestrians in red. Other outstanding safety features includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, to mention a few.

OWNING IT Kicking out an impressive 335kW with its phenomenal V8 engine there is a lot of bang for (a rather large) buck. The price tag comes in at R2 322 900.00. A bit on the heavy side but worth every cent. I say, take my money! SV

A NEW TIGUAN CHAPTER The Tiguan has been a favourite for many over the years. It has a traditional style to it that has stood the test of time. BY VANN VAN STADEN

olkswagen, however, doesn’t play it safe. They don’t believe in just sticking with what works and tweaking it every now and then. When they have a relaunch, you know it. They break boundaries and re-invent the (proverbial) wheel where they can. The new Tiguan is a testament to this.

THE LOOKER, INSIDE AND OUT The new Tiguan has beautiful sharp, strong design lines, very different from the more ‘round’ first generation model. The designers have used the latest technology both from an exterior and an interior point of view. Exterior details include the front grille that effortlessly flows into the halogen headlights, the defining straight-line curves on the hood that follow through to the sides and backside. It all comes together beautifully. On the interior, a sophisticated and luxurious yet clutter free cabin space has been created. Here you’ll find a multi-function leather steering wheel, the multimedia system allows for full connectivity via Bluetooth and USB interface,

cruise control, and front and rear electronic windows, to mention a few standards.

LOVING EVERY TERRAIN Tackling Cape Town’s concrete jungle or the dusty roads to the Cederberg, you’ll be able to transition with the greatest of ease. Great off-road capabilities such as the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system that effortlessly takes you on ‘the road less travelled’ comes standard in all the models. A truly premium feel no matter what the terrain.

READY FOR ACTION The 1.4-litre TSI with 92kW has up to 200 Nm of torque, making it a great contender in the compact SUV segment. Fuel consumption is a pleasure as you can get 6.1l/100km with the 92kW 1.4-litre TSI engine. To get you behind the wheel of the new Tiguan you only have to dig R390 200.00 deep for the entry level model. The Tiguan comes standard with a 5 year/ 90 000km Service Plan, 3 year/ 120 000km warranty and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty with service intervals at every 15 000km. Adventure awaits you… SV

APPOINTING A CONVEYANCER: WHY A SELLER MUST TAKE CARE In sale agreements, it is the property seller that has the right to nominate the conveyancing attorney that will attend to the registration of the transaction in the deeds office. Sellers, however, often take little interest in who is appointed as conveyancer because the purchaser pays the conveyancer’s fee.

CHECKLIST BEFORE YOU SELL OR BUY A HOUSE

However, even though the purchaser finances the transaction costs, the election to nominate the conveyancer rests with the seller to ensure that the process is driven by the party who has the least interest in delaying transfer. A late transfer costs a seller money in lost interest and opportunity cost and, if transfer of the property sold was intended to occur simultaneously with property that the seller has purchased, delays can also cause much anxiety and embarrassment.

HERE’S A USEFUL CHECKLIST:

Clearly it is not only advantageous but crucial that the seller exercises discretion when appointing a conveyancer. Ask yourself: Is the conveyancer known and from an established firm? Does the conveyancer have adequate experience? Is the conveyancer prepared to assist with the sales transaction prior to the conclusion thereof? Does the firm have a sound track record? All 12 nation-wide offices of STBB are wellknown for their conveyancing expertise and benchmark client service.

Having your personal paperwork in order at the time you buy or sell a property will go a long way towards reducing many common causes for delays.

Are your latest tax returns filed and tax affairs in order? Are you and your Home Owners Association or body corporate disputing whether levies are outstanding? They may refuse to issue the required clearance certificate. Are your rates and levy payments up to date? If a large amount is outstanding, you may need to arrange bridging finance to settle it as a rates clearance is required before transfer can be effected. Married? You’ll need a copy of your marriage certificate and antenuptial contract, if any. Divorced? Have a copy of your divorce order and settlement agreement at hand.

Contact us at www.stbb.co.za for assistance in all aspects of your sale transaction, before you sign your agreement.

Company, close corporation or trust? Have your resolution, founding documents and FICA papers ready. In the case of a Trust, a copy of the Letters of Authority is also required and it is crucial to remember that the resolution authorising the purchase or sale must be signed before concluding the agreement. If you’re selling and have an existing bond, give your bank timely notice of the intended sale or provide the loan account number to your conveyancer upfront so that they can notify the bank. If the home is not bonded, the seller must provide the original title deed. What is the status of your available funds: As seller you will need to pay all arrear property rates and/ or levies, and a pre-estimate of future, rates. As purchaser, you must pay Transfer Duty as well as the costs of the transfer (and bond registration, if applicable).

We are highly valued for our conveyancing expertise, so contact us to professionally manage each step of your transaction at info@stbb.co.za.
