ED ’S H C OICE
The year is speeding by, and just like that, we are entering the winter months again. With the prospect of rainy days and chilly nights upon us, we’ve put together some impossible-to-resist recipes, our favourite spots to dine, and a selection of wines that are just right for the season. We also take a look at the connection between stress and sleep and discover why it’s so important to prioritise rest and wellness. And for travel inspiration, we explore South Africa’s best museums, savour the natural beauty of Knysna, and take in some of Africa’s most impressive views, from Victoria Falls to the hills of Rwanda. As always, we’ve loved curating the finest fashion, food, and décor on the local scene. And for some good, exciting news to add to the mix… our next edition will see a fresh take on Southern Vines, a vision rebranded and refined to bring you, our readers, the absolute best content that South Africa has to offer. I’m sure you’re as excited as we are to embark on this new journey, and we absolutely cannot wait to hear your comments and feedback. If ever there was a time to change, it's now, and we’ll be doing just that with an energised outlook.

EXPLORER II
The new-generation Oyster Perpetual Explorer II features a redesigned case and bracelet for an even more balanced aesthetic. The white lacquer dial has black-coated hands with a beautiful matte finish. DATEJUST 36
Four new versions of the Rolex Oyster Datejust 36 have just been released, featuring ‘palm’ and ‘fluted’ dial motifs. The palm motif, which is evocative of lush tropical forests, features on three of the new watches. On the first piece, which comes in Oystersteel and includes an Oyster bracelet, the palm motif features on an olive-green dial. The second version is a yellow Rolesor and a combination of Oystersteel and yellow gold; while the third is an Everose Rosesor that combines Oystersteel and Everose gold on a Jubilee bracelet. The fluted motif features on another version of the yellow Rolesor with a Jubilee bracelet. Each new version of the Datejust 36 comes with calibre 3235, along with the Superlative Chronometer certification.
COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA
Rolex has just launched three exclusive versions of its Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. All three versions feature a rare metallic meteorite dial and black chronograph counters. One version comes in white gold and is fitted with a monobloc Cerachrom bezel in black ceramic; while the other two pieces come in yellow gold and Everose gold with a metal bezel and an Oyster bracelet. All of the Cosmograph Daytona watches feature the iconic tachymetric scale, which is moulded onto the first watch’s Cerachrom bezel, and engraved on the metal bezels of the two other versions. SV

WHAT’S HOT FOM X KOLISI ZWIDE
FOM x Kolisi Zwide Freedom of Movement and Siya Kolisi have launched a new shoe to help fund a sports infrastructure project in Kolisi’s hometown Zwide.
W
ith a shared passion for local design, plus the drive to celebrate and uplift local communities, local lifestyle brand Freedom of Movement (FOM) and national Rugby star Siya Kolisi have released a new limited edition veldskoen. FOM x Kolisi Zwide is a unique interpretation of the iconic South African ‘vellie’ and forms part of a campaign that pays tribute to Siya’s home town Zwide in the Eastern Cape.
FIRST OF ITS KIND The new FOM x Kolisi Zwide range now includes a black vellie, which is the first of its kind from the brand. The new shoe was launched following the success of the field green veldskoen, which was launched in aid of raising funds to build the Mbekweni field. The black vellie launch will be followed by a variety of black limited-edition bags and a workwear jacket as part of the campaign to fund a sports infrastructure project in Zwide. For Siya, the collaboration with FOM has been something special. "This is a very personal one for me,” he says. “Growing up in Zwide is where all my dreams started. Now, being able to make a difference is key as I want to ensure the story of the next
generation is different from mine. Being a part of this collaboration means a lot to me and I know it will help to make a significant difference in the community of Zwide. I believe that equipping the kids with better infrastructure to live their dreams will bring hope and offer that little bit of encouragement they may need to strive for their dreams”. For FOM co-founder Roal Boezaart, the Zwide campaign was a natural next step for the company. “Motivated by the overwhelming support that the Mbekweni project received, we gained the courage and confidence to do more and to give back more. Designing this range together with Siya has been a dream come true. This is even more personal and even more connected to Siya and we can’t wait to see the impact that it will have. We hope that South Africans will be as inspired and captivated by this campaign as we are.” The FOM X Kolisi Black Vellie is handcrafted in South Africa from premium nubuck leather in black, featuring a durable sole with a slight heel profile. The collaboration’s logo is tastefully embossed onto the shoe’s tongue and Siya Kolisi’s signature is embossed within the shoe’s interior to give the wearer an intimate sense of the extended collaboration they become part of through their purchase. ART WHAT’S HOT
ARTSCENE Three South African artists explore their world in their own distinct way — from a minimalist style to natureinspired representations and soft colour palettes, each individual artist has something to say and to share with the viewer. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
JUANITA OOSTHUIZEN Juanita Oosthuizen was born and raised in the Cape platteland and began experimenting with a variety of materials from a young age. In the early 90s, she worked in packaging design for a corporate gifts company before starting her own design business in 1998. In 2013, Juanita began her career as a professional artist and has since exhibited her work at various spaces around the country. Her art has been exhibited locally at spaces in Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Pretoria and in galleries abroad in the United States and Italy. Juanita’s work is minimalist and seeks to capture time and its experience. She incorporates miniature figurines into her artworks, which are mostly in a colour palette of black, white and grey and mounted in box frames for a 3D effect. Each artwork tells a story and is inspired by Juanita’s daily life and love for photography and design.

NOELEEN KLEVE Noeleen Kleve grew up in the Eastern Cape and has always felt a strong connection with the land. She studied Graphic Design at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town before working in design studios as a lecturer at the Austin Ellis Graphic Design School and then starting her own digital design and print business. In 2013, Noeleen completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts degree at UNISA and began creating her own art. Noeleen has exhibited her art at galleries all over South Africa, from Cape Town and Johannesburg to spaces in Prince Albert, Grahamstown and Nieu Bethesda. Noeleen creates hand-inked prints, which are largely inspired by the natural world. Her prints feature delicate and beautiful representations of fauna and flora, and she is continuously exploring ways to express her physical and spiritual relationship with the land through her art.

ART WHAT’S HOT
NICOLE PLETTS Nicole Pletts lives and works in Durban where she creates impressionist and contemporary artwork. She was a finalist in both the SASOL New Signatures 2009 in Pretoria and the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Competition in 2014. Nicole won the d’Urban d’Art Exchange and Artist’s Choice Award Exhibition in 2012 and had her painting used on a Camberley Estates 2012 Shiraz wine label. She has exhibited her work in various spaces around the country, from Pietermaritzburg to Hermanus. Nicole takes her camera wherever she goes and uses her own captured images as inspiration for her paintings. She is drawn to the colours of early morning and late afternoon and uses soft light and hues in her work. Her pieces mostly feature men at work, and this theme, along with a muted colour palette, has run through her work over the years. She hopes to provide the viewer with a sense of peace and harmony through her art. SV

Things to do
A little winter cold has never kept South Africans from having fun!
Visit the snow
With our location in the sub-tropics, snow is a rarity in South Africa. So, when we do get a cold snap and a good dump of it, which happens perhaps a couple of times per year, people travel from far and wide for a snow day experience. From snowmen, angels, and fights to the satisfying crunch of shoes on a fresh carpet of fluffy white flakes, you can do it all at the following prime destinations for winter snow: the Matroosberg and Cederberg in the Western Cape; Sutherland in the Northern Cape; Rhodes and Hogsback in the Eastern Cape; the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State; and the Underberg and Sani Pass, Mooi River, and Cathedral Peak in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Visit www.snowreport.co.za for info and accommodation options.
Hermanus
WHALE WATCHING
Every year, around June and July, great pods of southern right whales make their way northwards from their feeding grounds in Antarctica’s frigid Southern Ocean to breed in the substantially warmer waters off the southwestern Cape. And so it is that wintertime yields prime opportunities to witness these magnificent cetaceans, which take refuge to birth their calves in the natural harbours of our scalloped coastline. The most successful vantage points are found along the Cape Peninsula, False Bay, Cape Agulhas, and, of course, the famous whale-watching town of Hermanus; one of the top 12 whale-watching locations in the world, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Wine pairings
Few romances in history rival the legendary compatibility of food and wine, which is why many, if not most of South Africa’s 550 wineries offer these compelling, palate-pleasing experiences! There are the tried-and-tested-and-adored pairings, such as cheese and wine at Steenberg Farm in Constantia or chocolate and wine at Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch. Or, for something a little more unorthodox, there’s Eikendal Vineyards’ cheesecake and wine; Delheim’s fynbos cupcake and wine; Middlevlei’s “boerebraai tapas” and wine; Clos Malverne’s ice-cream and wine; or Villiera’s nougat and MCC. Is your mouth watering yet?
WINTER SAFARI
What’s the number one thing tourists flood to South Africa for? Safari! And with cool, yet dry weather dominating the interior during winter, it’s the perfect season to explore our country’s blessed natural heritage without getting heatstroke! The Kruger National Park is perhaps our country’s most iconic wildlife reserve, where one can witness vast, pristine tracts of wilderness as they existed before human habitation, as well as Big Five game, a vast assortment of large and small mammals and reptiles, and hundreds of species of birds. Closer to Cape Town, there’s Aquila Safari & Spa, which offers fully-catered, luxury, Big Five safari experiences. And you can explore by vehicle, quad bike, or horseback!

THEATRE
Live music (local and international), ballet, comedy, orchestras, plays, cabaret, burlesque, drag … you name it, there’s a South African theatre that offers an unforgettable evening (or matinée) of it! And when it’s cold out, there are few better things to do than to throw on something fabulous and head out for quality talent and entertainment. In Cape Town, the Artscape, Baxter, Barnyard, Gate69, and Theatre on the Bay are perhaps the best known and loved. In Johannesburg, there’s The Lyric, Market, Teatro and Pieter Toerien theatres, as well as the POPArt Centre. In other words, visitors are spoiled for choice!
Climb aboard the Blue Train
Surrender to the luxury of slow with a oncein-a-lifetime experience aboard the iconic Blue Train! Covering 1 660 kilometres from Pretoria to Cape Town (and return), the Blue Train lends ultimate credence to the adage ‘life is about the journey, not the destination’ because, for the approximate 27 hours of the trip, guests get to soak up a stratospheric standard of hospitality, food, wine, and entertainment. The High Tea is a British tradition that originated in the mid-1700s when working men on their afternoon break would stand around or lean casually against high stools to enjoy a meal of tea and finger foods; hence, “high tea”. Or so the story goes. Today, this afternoon tradition has become a muchadored ceremony—upheld at many restaurants, hotels, and wineries around the country — and an excuse to browse your way through a delectable smorgasbord of eats and treats, washed down with copious volumes of tea (or bubbly). The Mount Olympus of high tea experiences, however, has got to be the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.

or 18 years of my life, I would travel the long, meandering road from Hout Bay to the city, whether for school, to visit friends, or to cavort in Cape Town’s epic playground. I must’ve driven past the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel—a short wander from the M63—thousands of times. But it was only in 2018 that my awareness of this Elysium bloomed from an unremarkable road sign to the sublime luxury that had lain secreted away in the lush Constantia forests all that time. Sequestered within the Cellars-Hohenort Hotel like an ornate Russian nesting doll, I discovered the Greenhouse Restaurant, which today has collected such a staggering array of awards and accolades, they’d fill a novel of the sweetest reading. Perhaps better than all the pretty decoration is the fact that Greenhouse has managed to persevere despite the damage the pandemic rained down upon the South African restaurant industry. Nothing could make me happier because this restaurant is truly something special and unique.

A rising son of South Africa’s culinary scene
Behind the awards, accolades, and reputation Greenhouse has as a top foodie destination, you’ll find an inventive and thoughtful culinary team led by head chef Farrel Hirsch. Together, they offer a modern, African dining experience, drawing on a cornucopia of specialist ingredients and producers to craft impeccably presented dishes that follow through with compelling flavour combinations. Farrel joined Greenhouse as head chef in November 2018, bringing with him a flair for innovation and fresh flavours that fit seamlessly with the restaurant’s agenda, which was to produce revelatory cuisine. But this wasn’t his first time here! Born in South Africa, Farrel moved abroad to cut his teeth in some of Nottinghamshire’s most celebrated kitchens, including Tonic, World Service, and Cast at the Nottingham Playhouse. It was then in 2014, after his return home, that he got the job as sous chef at Greenhouse, under the watchful tutelage of acclaimed chef Peter Tempelhoff. Here, he learned about the absence of boundaries between food and theatre and witnessed how the ordinary could be transformed into a sublime food experience. Four years later, Chef Farrel returned to head the kitchen at Greenhouse, where he has been showcasing the complex, joyful, and beautiful delights of African cuisine ever since. His take is refreshing. “With African cuisine there is so much to explore, with flavours and ingredients that people have never tasted. I love finding new flavours and combinations. There is nothing better than surprising guests with a classic dish that has been turned on its head.”

What’s cooking at Greenhouse?
From Tuesday to Saturday, Greenhouse delivers a Modern African dinner tasting menu, which is really a composition of sustainable, hyper-local ingredients. Many of these have been foraged from the Cape’s topsoil and along its beaches, and, as such, convey local culture and food tradition to diners, many of which have never before experienced a South African braai, never mind fine dining! The menu (R750 per person | R490 for wine pairing) is a nine-course affair featuring such mouth-watering dishes as veldt brood, a baby bread loaf with virgin butter; varken lango, confit Oak Valley pork belly with smoked langoustine, sour fig confit, pine nut crumble, pickled couscous, and cauliflower velouté; die vis, line fish with coconut, lemon-thyme bulgur wheat emulsion, and saffron velouté; and ‘baked’ kaap, pear cheesecake, hazelnut parfait, smoked meringue, and burnt rum. Excuse me while I dab at the drool on my chin.

or architect Greg Katz, the design of several family homes in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs has served as a testing ground for his maturing practice. His new home represents the most recent example of this attitude. At his house, on a balmy latesummer afternoon, Greg relayed an uncommon aesthetic preference: ‘I love the raw, pared-down visual quality of generic parking garages.’
Greg and Caryn’s home commands a self-assured yet unassuming presence. Its street-facing façade presents a restrained palette of materials, colours and textures. Concrete grey and the soft pinkish-red of its expressive brickwork inform the home’s overall character. A Mediterranean blue announces the slender front door and a punchy yellow emphasises carefully placed door and window openings. Greg’s affinity for concrete was honed over a decade ago in the family’s first purposebuilt house. Three kids later, this home is softer and more nuanced than its predecessor. It’s a fine example of the versatility permitted by a concrete skeleton. The Katz’s house sits comfortably in the lineage of structural concrete-frame potential that Le Corbusier stimulated over a century ago, with the 1914 launch of his famous Dom-Ino concrete frame. Always searching for fresh uses for existing materials, Greg came upon an unusual decommissioned bevelled brick. He used its sill-like character in a playful way for the home’s non-load-bearing walls. The result echoes the beautifully textured nature of the brick infill façades of a bygone Johannesburg era. The use of brickwork, even though precise and controlled, is playful. The bevelled brick is turned this way and that, accomplishing a crisp, pleated texture. This approach lends the home’s façades a fabric-like quality, evoking the famous German architect and writer Gottfried Semper’s reminder to us that some of architecture’s earliest walled enclosures were, in fact, made using textiles. gregorykatz.co.za

THE MODEST twostorey studio building occupies the southeastern corner of the property. Downstairs it houses Caryn’s studio, where she shares her enthusiasm for the Alexander Technique with her clients. Upstairs is where Greg and his small team dream up future architectural visions. The building is made of a lightweight steel framework entirely clad in what is traditionally a roofing material: an asphalt-coloured shingle, made of only 2 mm-thick recycled rubber sheets, finished with a silicate coating (with a 20-year lifespan!). The circular pavers are not actual pavers, but the residue from the pouring of the coffered slabs for the house. Instead of letting it go to waste, Greg asked the builders to pour the small amount of concrete leftover from each newly mixed batch into a circular container. Once set, these circular shapes were popped out and stored to ultimately become a playful walkway between Caryn and Greg’s studios.

The fact that it’s raised means that the pool itself creates its own protective edge, dispensing with the need for a traditional pool fence. SV

THE CREATION
The range from Aurora Home includes custom-illustrated aprons made with 100 percent cotton, adjustable leather straps and brass details; napkins and kitchen towels that are both fun and functional; gorgeous table runners; reusable and stylish shopper and tote bags; and beautiful soft pots for plants. Their collection also includes a striking throw that depicts Lion’s Head peeking through the local fynbos — it’s a limitededition piece and a truly unique décor item.
THE TALENT
Aurora Home is owned and run by Lize-Marie Dreyer of Aurora Creative Studio. Lize-Marie personally illustrates all of the unique designs before they are printed onto the handmade fabrics. LizeMarie has won several awards for her illustration work and was shortlisted in The World Illustration Awards by the Association of Illustrators in London for her work on a children’s book. As an artist, Lize-Marie draws much of her inspiration from plants, flowers and nature and many of her homeware items feature these elements — think plenty of fruity and floral prints, as well as distinctly local designs like fynbos-inspired patterns. While Lize-Marie creates the designs and manages the business, she employs four sewists who hand-craft the pieces. Each item is made with the utmost care and attention to detail and the result is a range of inimitable boutique products, each of which is locally made by women.

No synthetic materials are used in the process of creating their range of homeware products, and there is a strict zero-wastage policy that ensures that no fabric or leather is discarded.
WE LOVE
It’s difficult to choose our favourites from the Aurora Home offering, but if you love to cook at home, be sure to check out the range of cotton aprons. They’re available in several fun designs, including a quirky mushroom print. Serve your home-cooked meal upon a beautifully set table — the napkins and table runners are also available in some striking designs. In the spirit of sustainability, we also love the beeswax wraps. They’re an environmentally friendly alternative to cling wrap and can be simply wiped or rinsed before reusing. An added bonus — they come with a cute bee design. SV www.aurorahome.co.za

ADVERTORIAL
PROTECTING SOUTH AFRICA’S BIODIVERSITY THE POSITIVE ROLE OF WASTE
They say one man’s waste is another man’s treasure and this couldn’t be truer when looking at the Kate Stubbs, potential of waste Marketing Director in South Africa at Interwaste and the positive impact waste can have when we take a proactive stance towards reuse, recycling and repurposing. Waste has potential. It’s time we use it to protect our country’s biodiversity and provides future generations with not only secure biodiversity for years to come but also with solutions that take waste and turn it into something useful to combat South Africa’s industrial and socioeconomic challenges. We don’t inherit the land from our parents, we borrow it from our children and so, there is no greater time than now, to identify ways in which we can preserve it and ‘give it back’ to them better than we found it. South Africa generates 122 million tonnes of waste per annum. This is about R25.2 billion worth of waste being generated, with approximately 90% of this waste going to landfill. However, by driving proactive and preventative measures, we can change the trajectory. Take the Circular Economy Model, as a reformative system, for example, which offers significant opportunities to deliver
SVM Winter 2021_Interwaste.indd 80
2021/05/18 17:15
on more inclusive economic growth, job opportunities and positive environmental practices that are directly needed for sustainability. By stripping out all unnecessary waste materials, reducing the consumption of energy and raw materials and allowing these materials, energy, and resources to be ‘fed’ back into the cycle, I believe there is an opportunity for companies to optimise their own waste streams for use in other industries. This creates not just an opportunity for further cost savings or revenue generators, but also – very critically – protecting the environment. While the knock-on effect of effective waste management is profound from an economic point of view, it also holds a lot of weight in reducing the impact on our biodiversity – critical to the long-term sustainability of South Africa’s beautiful views, wildlife and oceans as well as our economic resilience, where South Africa is very much driven by eco-tourism as a result of these unique environmental attributes. It is however, important to note that while climate change has been centered around too much carbon in our atmosphere - carbon is not our enemy, it is the building block of life. Everything alive is made of it and it supports the incredible earth we live on. The problem and solutions are simply a matter of balance. 500 million years ago, the carbon cycle began, providing a balance that allowed for life as we know it to evolve however, humanity figured out how to extract carbon from the fossil pool, we’ve been burning it into energy and effectively disrupted the balance. In order to serve life and restore the earth, we need to adopt a new mindset. We need to re-connect with the natural ecosystems, learn from nature, and change our behaviours to ensure we create a sustainable planet for all life forms. The big question is, how can we bring the cycle back in balance? Through regenerative agriculture practices, reforestation and embracing emerging green technologies, we are able to restore the earth by solving the
SVM Winter 2021_Interwaste.indd 81
pandemic of climate change but more so, waste – waste forms a critical pillar, removing the need for fossil fuels in many industrial practices and providing things like energy to support South Africa’s growing energy needs, as an example. It also provides an opportunity to reduce landfill use and further protect the land, species and air that landfills unfortunately occupy. Therefore, it becomes important for businesses to look at exploring innovative and sustainable solutions, where rapid growth and resilience are at the forefront of its decisions. By promoting ‘circular economy’ thinking – which aims to challenge the status quo - waste management is key to encouraging the ‘nothing wasted’ mindset as well as offset the ‘bad’ carbon emissions by reducing them and their impact on our natural environment - helping restore balance. This balance is also reliant on the consumer to shift their mindsets around a throw-away culture. A deeper level of appreciation for what is at risk if we don’t change our mindsets needs to be driven to not only create awareness of the fact that innovative waste solutions can provide economic and financial relief in many areas but that, if we don’t reduce our waste risk, we face even worse consequences – a country whose natural environment has nothing left to offer tourists and whose tourism sector is diminished beyond repair, and worse, one that has very little beauty left to offer future generations.
have an obligation to protect this. And in fact, even in this sector, we are seeing many off the grid locations as the industry’s way of forming part of the solution – they are environmentally friendly and offer less dependence on our very scarce electricity resources. Think of places like the Karoo, the Cederberg or the De Hoop Nature Reserve, where our national flower, the King Protea is found. Or, if you’re in JHB, what about something a little closer such as the Drakensberg, Magaliesburg or even the Wild Coast – all offering incredible, sprawling mountain views. There is also a breath-taking amount of scenery in Mpumalanga, where you will not only see the most stunning rock formations and views but explore a true natural paradise. And, if you’re looking for an ocean experience then look no further than Kosi Bay with its long, stretching beaches and beautiful ocean views. Do we want to preserve this? Of course we do and so, going forward, we need to be thinking ahead and instil a complete culture change - by adopting an all-inclusive view, with innovative and best practices for waste transformation and environmental best practice in general. This will require creativity, collaboration, innovation, dedication, and a changed mindset to see the circular economy model as a means to build towards a resilient and sustainable future for all.
As a country that has become very much accustomed to solitude and the ability to get away from the bustling city life – being able to experience our beautiful beaches or game parks – we

WELLBEING REST
REST is best Rest and balance is key when it comes to enjoying a sense of wellbeing. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
The past year has certainly been a challenging one, and we have all been affected in different ways. In an uncertain time, many of us have felt the very real impact of stress, which is why it is so important that health takes priority. When it comes to wellness, sleep plays an integral part. Sleep and mood are very closely linked, and poor sleep can lead to stress and an increased risk of anxiety and depression; healthy sleep and good-quality rest help to restore energy and allow us to disengage from stressors, enhancing wellbeing. In the pursuit of balance and health, we discover three brands that are committed to facilitating real wellness.

SLEEP ON NATURE One of the best ways to enhance the quality of your sleep is to choose a comfortable surface on which to rest. Established in Greece in 1989, COCO-MAT creates sleeping products with one common goal: to facilitate perfect sleep and provide utmost comfort. The company handcrafts pillows, beds and mattresses with completely natural materials from the most sustainable sources possible. This includes cool, crisp cotton; warm, contour-hugging coconut husk; and nurturing, luxurious natural latex, which are all organically grown and locally sourced in their region. Multiple layers of natural materials are stacked inside each product, and no metal springs are used in their mattresses — hard coconut fibres provide support, while the elastic layers of natural latex follow the body’s shape. Other natural materials include eucalyptus and seaweed. COCO-MAT also boasts an almost totally neutral carbon footprint and 96 percent recycling reach.

TRY A CALMING BEDTIME ELIXIR When it comes to sleep-inducing tea, there’s nothing quite like camomile. Carmién Orange Camomile features a fragrant blend of green rooibos, green honeybush and camomile, which blends perfectly with the slightly perfumed flavour of bergamot, orange and creamy vanilla. It’s perfect to enjoy just before bed — rooibos has soothing properties, while camomile is very calming.
BEDTIME RITUALS TO REDUCE STRESS Gratitude journaling Write down 3 positives of the day. A reminder to remain thankful for what we have. Take a shower or bath On nights where you need extra help to calm the nerves consider a hot shower. There’s nothing quite like a hot shower and bath to relax the shoulders and calm the mind. Guided meditation There are a few good apps out there that focus on guided meditations. Consider downloading Calm and relax to light music and nature sounds while being encouraged to visualise a calm setting.

FIND YOUR FLOW If you’re looking for a bedtime read that’s packed with practical solutions and wisdom, try 7 Steps to Finding Flow by Nicky Rowbotham. It’s a guide to learning how stress impacts your energy, hormones and nervous system; and explores ways to reduce stress and easily navigate it when it does creep in. While stress can’t always be avoided, Nicky believes that it can be dealt with differently in order to access better health, energy and balance. Ideal for those feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, this book aims to provide strategies for a more resilient and aligned life. Many of us only pay attention to stress when it makes us ill, but in this book, Nicky urges us to listen to our bodies and to move our nervous systems into a state of flow. SV

BLUEBERRY OMBRE SHORTBREAD CHEESECAKE Serves: 12
This cheesecake combines the best aspects of both a baked and a non-baked cheesecake – the crispy, buttery, golden shortbread base, with the light, creamy, easy no-bake cheesecake topping.
INGREDIENTS
Cheesecake Base 200g plain flour 130g unsalted butter 65g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Cheesecake Topping 4 x 250g cream cheese 1 x (12g) sachet gelatin dissolved in 8 tablespoons cold water 250ml double cream 250g blueberry jam
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200°C/ Fan 180°C/ Gas Mark 6 First, make the base. Combine all the base ingredients in a food processor. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and bring the dough together to form a soft dough. Line the baking dish with baking paper and press in the dough. Level and smooth the base using the back of a spoon, ensuring it is well pressed into the edges and corners.
Prick several times using a fork and bake in the oven for 15 – 20 minutes until baked through and lightly golden on top. Remove from the oven and leave to cool fully. In the meantime, make the cheesecake mixture. Combine the cream cheese, gelatin, double cream and 75g of the blueberry jam. To make the ombre effect, remove two thirds of the mixture, place in another bowl with another 75g jam and mix well. Finally, take out half of the new mixture and combine with another 50g jam. You should now have three blueberry cream mixtures in different tones of purple. On top of the cooled base, layer the mixtures carefully with the lightest in colour mixture at the bottom. Smooth with a spatula before adding the next layer of mixture, being careful not to blend the colours too much. Finish with the final mixture before topping with the remaining 50g jam. Place in the fridge and set for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight. Slice and serve with fresh blueberries. SV

The Land Cruiser Prado has established itself as one of the most accomplished off-roaders on the South African market. While many SUV’s are bought for ‘curb appeal’, the Prado leverages its Land Cruiser DNA to deliver when the going gets tough. The Land Cruiser badge carries substantial cachet and whether it is the utility-focused 70-series, poised Prado or flagship 200-series – owners have come to rely on the robust construction and go-anywhere capability that the Land Cruiser badge signifies.
The flagship VX-L versions feature Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which encompasses Pre-Collision System (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). In addition, the Automatic High Beam (AHB) function provides enhanced visibility via the LED headlamps when activated. A power-operated tilt-andslide moonroof completes the VX-L package.
POWER UP At the heart of the revised range is an additional 30kW of power and 100Nm of torque derived from the switch to the latest-generation 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine, that is now mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission (previously five-speed). Prado’s overlanding and towing credentials benefit from the higherperformance engine that now delivers a maximum of 150kW@3400rpm and 500Nm over a wider 1600-2800rpm band. The latest generation 2.8 GD-6 engine (as debuted in the updated Hilux) has received a raft of upgrades including a new ball-bearing turbocharger with a larger turbine and impeller, and improved engine rigidity and cooling. Better fuel economy is realised through optimised pistons and piston rings, changes to the cylinder block and head, higher fuel-injection flow rate and the adoption of highperformance materials for the exhaust manifold and cylinder-head gasket.
OFF-ROAD TECHNOLOGIES compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Customers are able to utilise mobile-phoneservices such as Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, SoundCloud etc. to enhance their driving experience – while providing enhanced telephony and messaging interfaces ‘on-the-fly’. An embedded satellite navigation system complements the aforementioned smartphone functionality – particularly useful when out of signal range.
STANDARD SPECIFICATION
NEW INFOTAINMENT
As before a three-grade strategy is followed; TX, VX and VX-L. The TX variants come well equipped with automatic dual-zone climate control, 6-speaker touch audio system, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, illuminated entry, cruise control, park distance control, keyless entry, auto door lock, three power outlets, Bluetooth connectivity, USB, 3rd row seating and reverse camera. Seat heating and ventilation are provided for front row occupants while 2nd row occupants also benefit from seat heating. The refrigerated centre console helps make light work of road trips or bushveld excursions.
A new-generation multimedia system is fitted across the range, which now incorporates a larger 9-inch touchscreen display (previous 8-inch), enhanced voice recognition and
VX models amplify the comfort and convenience specification with the addition of memory function for the driver’s seat, a 14-speaker Premium
The 4.0-litre petrol engine continues unaltered (also mated to a six-speed automatic transmission). Maximum power is 202 kW at 5,600rpm, with peak torque of 381Nm delivered at 4,400rpm.

All Prado models feature Toyota’s Active Traction Control system (A-TRAC), which actively regulates wheel-slip, by directing torque to the wheel with the most traction. The system is capable of applying braking pressure to wheels individually to maximise traction. Hill Assist Control (HAC) forms part of the standard ensemble. The Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system (VX and VX-L only), operated by a centrally mounted rotary knob, allows the driver to select the correct mode depending on the ‘road’ ahead. The system has five pre-configured modes (mud & sand, loose rock, mogul, rock & dirt and rock),to tailor the vehicle’s traction control, transmission characteristics, power delivery and suspension settings to the terrain at hand. Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and Crawl Control are included on VX and VX-L models.

WINE TASTE
It is location, geography and a sense of place that makes wine the most diverse and interesting beverage in the world.BY EMILE JOUBERT

o one really cares where the hops come from that are used to brew a cold beer, nor do we ponder over the origin of the maize used to distil the base spirits for gin or vodka. But wine is on its own planet in terms of defining and emphasising provenance and the specificity of vineyards. Here, our address counts. No other wine-producing country can compete with South Africa when it comes to the diversity, natural heritage and spectacular beauty of its wine regions. The oldest soils in the world and a location slap-bang in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom with its thousands of species of fauna and flora makes Cape wine’s address, and the place we call home, just incredible.
For the love of nature
In this era’s emphasis on sustainability, conservation and preservation of natural areas, South Africa can become a world leader in promoting its wines as in tune with the natural environment as humanly possible. This aspect of the local wine industry has drawn the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the most recognised and important conservation body in the world. Through the WWF, the Conservation Champions project has harnessed some 50 Cape wineries who have each shown an extraordinary commitment to protect and nurture the natural habitats of their respective farms whilst at the same time continuing to produce wines that South Africans can be proud of. In sync with nature through conservation, these wines sport the WWF Conservation Champions logo and validate the various members’ conservation actions — as well as helping to promote the Cape wine industry’s overall commitment to its natural living environment. Among these 50 WWF Conservation Champion members are some of the country’s leading producers. Which makes it easier still — and logical — to pursue these wines in my purchases.

CREATION VIOGNIER 2020 Situated in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge area of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley outside Hermanus, Creation seamlessly incorporates its gorgeous physical location with the making of an extensive range of superb wines. This has not only sent Creation to the top of the Cape wine offering, but with its restaurant and tasting centre perched between two wilderness edges and the scent of fynbos in the air, this has become one of the country’s most visited wineries. Winemaker and owner JC Martin is a sure hand at Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two varieties that excel in Hemel-en-Aarde. But I find Creation’s Viognier to be one of the exciting wines in the range. This white variety, with origins in the Rhône Valley of France, seems to flourish in cool maritime Hemel-en-Aarde. In its making, the wine is fermented and matured in stainless steel, thus keeping the perky freshness of the grape which so often can turn into a glass of mushy apricotdriven juice when kept in wood. Creation Viognier is brisk with an edge of raciness, yet on the mid-palate, it shows a calm and cool creaminess with a broad, floral finish. Fruit and minerals come together for a delicious white wine of the kind of easy complexity one finds in the acting of Steve McQueen.
NEETHLINGSHOF 1802 COLLECTION PINOTAGE 2017 This is one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine estates, with a history traced back to 1692. Not only has the natural environment been kept in tact, but so too has Neethlingshof done a great job in preserving its traditional buildings. The old wine cellar was completed in 1802 and the date was

chosen to name Neethlingshof’s new range of premium wines. The 1802 Collection sports a Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are both great wines, but there is something about the Pinotage that made me want to traipse around Neethlingshof’s fynbos patches

whispering good things to the caracal and owls who live there. Created from a single Pinotage vineyard planted in 1997, this wine was made from hand-selected berries. Fermentation was done in barrel, after which the wine spent a mighty 26 months maturing in 300l vessels made from French oak. The three finest barrels were selected for the 1802 Pinotage, and this focus is evident in the wine. A sweet-fruited core drives this polished, immaculate red wine, the beauty of which lies in its completeness. No specific flavours leap to the fore, nor are there any notable hooks in the form of tannins or alert acidity. It is just a long, pure and refined wine of beauty and elegance. After finishing one bottle — just to ensure that my assumption was correct for the whole journey — I ordered another few bottles as this classic Pinotage is going to mature beautifully over the next decade or two.
Boschendal, together with Groot Constantia as South Africa’s oldest wine estate, circa 1685, is a powerhouse when it comes to conservation with the protection of its natural surroundings complemented by incredible eco-projects incorporating, among others, solar energy and wastewater management. Of course, the wines are fantastic and despite its rich, long wine tradition, Boschendal continues to innovate. Stellenbosch is Ground Zero for Cabernet Sauvignon, thus Boschendal has introduced its maiden Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, made from the comet 2017 vintage. The grapes are grown on the Helderberg, along with Simonsberg, Stellenbosch’s two finest regions for Cabernet Sauvignon as a result of the decomposed granite soils, afternoon sunlight radiation and consistent air-flows. Trucked to Boschendal’s Simondium winery, the grapes are fermented for over two weeks, with pump-overs drawing maximum flavour, structure and character from the skins. Maturation takes place for 16 months in French oak, and the result is wine made very well from South Africa’s finest red wine variety grown in the best region for it. Immediate aromas of pine-needle, dark fruit and fynbos waft from the glass. From the first sip, the wine is enormously satisfying in a sit-back-and-wonder kind of way. Ripe plums, dried figs and sun-kissed herbs come to the fore, with muscular tannins giving it a broody presence which, in the world of great Cabernet Sauvignon, is only natural. SV

New Wine Arrivals They’re here! The Cape winelands debut their new vintages of wines.
While we were all caught up in the effervescent afterglow of our (much humbler) New Year celebrations, bunches of grapes in the Cape’s vineyards swelled and ripened in the summer heat. And beneath their soils, in the ferment-fragranced cellars, wines that had been previously laid down to mature for a year or more were being awakened by human hands, finally ready for market. With the new year comes a new vintage of wine and here are some that we are most excited about in 2021.
ERNIE ELS PROPRIETORS BLEND 2017 Origin: Stellenbosch www.ernieelswines.com
From the world-famous terroir of Stellenbosch’s Helderberg region, and the lauded hands of winemaking legend, Louis Strydom, comes the powerful and expressive, yet impeccably balanced Ernie Els Proprietors Blend 2017. This wine is a seamless union of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, all grown on the Ernie Els Wines estate, and delivers complex aromas of pure cassis, meat, and oak spice. Its well-integrated fruit centre is underscored by dense, yet finely-tuned tannins and culminates in a long-defined finish.

Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020 Origin: Constantia www.steenbergfarm.com
Since joining Steenberg Vineyards in June 2019 as cellarmaster and general manager, Elunda Basson has had designs on producing top-tier Sauvignon Blanc. This came to fruition this year with her proud debut of the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020. The cool climate Constantia Valley is an Eden for this grape varietal, and the unique terroir embracing the historic Steenberg farm is lovingly expressed in the wine with its zesty complexity, distinctive mineral core, and piquant bouquet of fresh Cape gooseberries, nettles, capsicum, and white blossom.
KLEINE ZALZE FAMILY RESERVE NEW VINTAGE Origin: Stellenbosch www.kleinezalze.co.za
Kleine Zalze, Platter’s 2021 Winery of the Year, is said to have made its most resounding release to date with the most recent vintage of the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve range. This range of four wines combines two of South Africa’s most exciting vintages (2019 for Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc; 2017 for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz) with a winemaking talent that coaxes the best possible expression from these cultivars. “We only produce these wines in exceptional vintages and we make them in limited quantities,” says winemaker RJ Botha.

Tokara Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Origin: Stellenbosch www.tokara.com
Carpeting the southern slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, the vineyards of Tokara have, for centuries, produced wines of an exceptional calibre. This tradition continues boldly with the most recent release of the estate’s Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 by winemaker Stuart Botha, who came to Tokara in 2017 after a decade of award-winning winemaking in Constantia. This full-bodied, richly textured red wine delivers a nose of graphite, briary fruits, five-spice, and a hint of dried porcini, and mouthfuls of dark cherry, red currant, and fynbos scrub.
PERDEBERG DRY LAND COLLECTION Origin: Paarl www.perdeberg.co.za
The award-winning Perdeberg Dry Land Collection is liquid proof that tough, inhospitable conditions can yield the most beautiful fruit. Consisting of an old vine barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally sweet Chenin, and a red and white blend, each wine in this Collection is a testament to the endurance of these “dry land” vineyards. Under the discerning eye of Perdeberg cellarmaster Albertus Louw, the Dry Land Collection has been made in a new-world style with complexity and ample fruit and structure, while remaining value-conscious.

STELLENZICHT ACHEULEAN CHARDONNAY 2020 Origin: Stellenbosch www.stellenzicht.com There’s been a renaissance at Stellenzicht, which spills over the foothills of the Helderberg within the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley. Recently, the farm underwent an extensive vine re-planting programme, during which ancient Acheulean hand-axes were discovered. And this inspired winemaker L’Ré Burger’s new, premier quality wine range. Fermented in clay amphorae with a portion given time in 500-litre barrels, the finely curated Stellenzicht Acheulean Chardonnay 2020 exhibits a playful nose of fresh stone fruit and citrus, and a palate of zesty minerality, acidity, and delicate oak. Knysna is rich in artisans who are only too willing to share their crafts. The first stop is 5 Noble Street in the Industrial quarter. Whitewashed serves one of the best coffees and carrot cake in town, Barker & Mill produces enticing handmade leather goods, and Design Wise will have you rethinking your home with their range of bespoke furniture.
OF FORESTS AND FABLES
From hair-raising tales of the early pioneers, rumours of forest elephants, the story of the Italian silk-spinners, and the mythical yeti-like Otong creatures – the Knysna forests abound with fables. Experience the magic yourself and spend some time in the forests which are a veritable playground for walkers, hikers, and trail runners. The Perdekop Hiking Trail is a local favourite. This 9.5km circular route boats pristine forest meanders and a waterfall. Access is from the Harkerville Forestry Station and the permit costs R40. Using the same permit you can also access ‘The Garden of Eden’: two boardwalk loops of about 500m or one big loop of about 1km, accessible directly from the N2.

The 2-hour activity is eight kilometres outside of Knysna in the Harkerville Forest. Knysna Scootours offers an exhilarating downhill experience – gliding down a forest single track on one of their Monster Mountain Scooters. Tours begin at Sirocco Restaurant and run three times a day. Of course, what would a visit to Knysna be without getting out on the ocean? WHERE TO STAY
The Turbine Hotel
This five-star hotel on Thesen Island may just offer the town’s most stylish rooms – but with a twist. In the 1920s the Island was a timber processing plant and until 2001 The Turbine provided the power. Fast forward a few years and The Turbine got a new lease of life when owners Geoff Engel and Dandre Lerm, refurbished her as a luxury hotel. Perched above the water, the elevated rooms look down the Knysna canals offering a unique stay. Be prepared to be dazzled by the eclectic interiors that combine original power station elements with modern touches for an elegant reimagining of its electric past. www.turbinehotel.co.za

GO R IL L A TREKKING IN RWANDA Rarely does a guest return from meeting the legendary mountain gorillas without using the term ‘life-changing’. Dedicated conservation efforts have seen the population almost double in the past two decades, but even so, there are only an estimated 1 000 individuals in the wild. Rightfully so, the process of visiting the gorillas is carefully controlled – only six tracking permits are issued per troop per day with a strict maximum of one hour’s daily contact. The experience is bookable through your hotel or directly at www.rwandatourism.com – be sure to enquire about any post-pandemic or South African resident specials. Luxury hotel brand One&Only have extended their footprint in Rwanda; in addition to their property in Nyungwe Forest, they have recently opened Gorilla’s Nest in the North. The property is the closest to Volcanoes National Park, where the gorillas, golden monkeys, and astonishing birdlife can be enjoyed. www.oneandonlyresorts.com

WATCH THE GREAT MIGRATION AT THE S E RENGE T I The Serengeti is one of the world’s most celebrated reserves, where every year a staggering two million animals migrate across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, a wildlife spectacle that often tops African bucket lists. The best times for wildlife viewing are from January to February or from June to September. In late July and August, the wildebeest make daring crossings over the Grumeti and Mara rivers – a feast for crocodiles and photographers alike. Hospitality legends Four Seasons have been welcoming guests to this special region for almost a decade. Their Safari Lodge is a luxury home-base in-between safaris, of which the most spectacular must surely be witnessing the wildlife from a hot air balloon, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. www.fourseasons.com/serengeti

THE VICTORIA FALLS
Standing before the majestic Victoria Falls is an experience for the body, mind, and soul. Experiencing it for the first time, I was reminded of David Livingstone, who, as the first European visitor, announced when seeing the falls: “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” At a bewildering 1 708m width and 108m height, it’s no wonder the locals know the falls as “The Smoke That Thunders”. The falls can be admired from both Zimbabwe and Zambia, with the former offering a more substantial view. Perhaps one of the most fitting stays would be to overnight on an island on the mighty Zambezi River itself. A one-hour drive upriver from the falls, Tsowa Safari Island, offers guests authentic accommodation situated in the Zambezi National Park. www.tsowasafariisland.co.za

BOT SWA N A’ S O K AVA N GO DELTA In this environment, one of nature’s greatest natural dramas unfolds. An ancient conversation between rainfalls thousands of kilometres away in the Angolan Mountains and Botswana’s watery wilderness’s Okavango Delta. This previous life-giving water traverses countries until the Delta’s two fault lines coerce it into slowing down and fanning out over the land. The result is virescent slivers of landscape intersected by blue-veined waterways. Along these waterways, the wildlife revel in the annually-welcomed water. Elephants turn into water babies, pods of hippo determinedly protect their territories, and lechwe leave magnificent sprays of water as they dart along the water’s edge. Xigera is Botswana’s newest and possibly most impressive safari offering. The lodge sits on the western side of the Moremi Game Reserve, and in this wild setting, the lodge will sleep a maximum of 24 guests in 12 exclusive and private units – all designed to luxuriously profile the 1000th Natural Wonder of the World. www.xigera.com

EXPLORE MUSEUMS
Explore: MUSEUM Houses of nature and human history and achievement. BY THEA BECKMAN
Museums are an ode to the past: to the natural heritage into which humankind was born; our subsequent evolution, mastery, and abuse of that heritage; the conflicts, cruelty, and kindness we are capable of; the exquisite art, craft, and creativity we are blessed with as a species; and the abundance of questions to which we seek answers, from who the critters we share our planet with are to what lies beyond the bounds of our atmosphere. Museums are places to learn, remember, and honour our forward momentum towards better times, not just for our species, but for the planet too. And so, with winter weather around the corner, threatening to keep us housebound, why not include some of the country’s finest museums in your “local is lekker” tourist itinerary?

MOTORING JAGUAR
REM A T
he new Jaguar E-PACE has finally touched down on home soil. The E-PACE has been a favourite in the Southern Vines garage since the first time I got behind the wheel of one in 2018. The E-PACE has recently had a facelift with new LED ‘Double J’ Daytime running light headlights, a brand spanking new mesh grille with a noble chrome finish and it also boasts some impressive interior changes. Think along the lines of an integrated 11.4inch curve-glass HD touchscreen at the centre granting you access to the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. Jaguar has also upgraded their touch screen by adding 2 special coatings to it. The one prevents glare and the other coating makes it fingerprint-resistant. Drawing inspiration from their electric I-PACE model, Jaguar has added a new steering wheel to the E-PACE. This really is where the magic sits. There are hidden-until-lit switches, the perfect showstopper and metal paddle shifts. There are 4 engine options to choose from in the range. The range-topping 300 SPORT is what gets our engines going at 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds with a maximum speed of 241km/h. Pricing for the new E-PACE starts at R868 000 for the E-PACE R-Dynamic S D200 and goes up to R1 046 900 for the range-topping E-PACE 300 SPORT P300. SV

ELECTRIFYING Are you ready to embrace the EV revolution? BY VANN VAN STADEN
S
o, we might not have flying cars nor are we teleporting to work in Doc Brown’s time-travelling DeLorean, but the future is here! We have cars that can travel hundreds of kilometres with just a 20-minute charge from an 800-volt power source. The Electric Vehicle (EV) bug has hit, and we are welcoming it with open arms… especially with the consistent hikes in petrol prices. The question, however, remains: why don’t we see more electric vehicles on South African roads? Firstly, they don’t
134_Motoring_EV.indd 134
come cheap. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S, for example, comes in stock standard before any add-ons, at a whopping R4 000 000. Compare that to its non-EV version, and you can just about slash that price in half. The other major setback is the lack of government incentives to go the electric route. Unlike Europe and America, there are no incentives here for making principled decisions about the cars we drive. Let’s ignore that all for a second and revel in the EV offerings available in Mzansi. Here are our four favourites, in no particular order.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES MOTORING
BMW I3 When BMW dropped the i3 back in 2015 for the first time, everyone paid attention. She got loads of stares on the road — firstly, from naysayers hating on the German powerhouse for entering the ‘eco market’ and secondly for its looks. You either loved it or loathed it. Today, six years later, we have grown rather accustomed to seeing this pint-sized Beemer on the road. The i3 can get you an impressive 260 kilometres on a full charge. That’s more than enough for your daily commute. The BMW i3 goes from 0 to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds. The neat, compact electric engine kicks out 125kW and 250Nm of torque. Price tag: R754 200 for the i3 120Ah.
MINI COOPER SE JAGUAR I-PACE The Jaguar I-PACE has been available locally since 2019. The I-PACE is driven by a 90kWh battery. The battery delivers 294kW and 696Nm of torque, a reminder that, regardless of the theme (EV or sports car), Jaguar doesn’t compromise on power. It takes the I-PACE only 4.8 seconds to hit the 0-100km mark. And then there’s the big question: how far does the I-PACE take you on a single charge? A formidable 470 kilometres is the answer. Price tag: R1 942 600.
One of the more affordable EV’s currently on our roads is the Mini Cooper SE. A pocket rocket, the epitome of fun on 4-wheels. The Mini Cooper SE brings 135kW and 270Nm of torque to the party and goes 0-100km in 7.3 seconds. With a full charge, you can reach 215 kilometres. Price tag: starting at R658 000.
PORSCHE TAYCAN It will take 2.8 seconds to reach the 0-100km mark in the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. This is all possible thanks to the two electric motors in this EV. The lithium-ion batteries deliver 460kW of power, and once you hit the over boost, it gets catapulted to 560kW and 1 050Nm of torque. Sure, the price tag on Taycan Turbo S can ultimately get you two 718 Cayman GT4’s with about a millionrand change, but this car is a modern-day marvel and well worth the spend. SV
