Estefano’s Story When it came time to blow out his candles on his 14th birthday, Estefano had only one wish: a new heart. Just 40 minutes later, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised his family with a phone call that made his wish come true. Born with a single ventricle heart defect, Estefano underwent five open heart surgeries since the age of 2. The surgeries allowed his heart to function better and sustain him, but his heart began to fail and the team assessed the need to put him on the transplant list. The Weston teen is the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient and living legacy of a donor family who gave him the gift of a new life. DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS: BROWARD COUNTY SMALL HORSES WORK MAGIC ON BIG PROBLEMS SUN SENTINEL REPORT

The horses are small, the feelings of loss huge. But for many youngsters coping with the death of a loved one, the combination somehow works. About 35 children who have recently lost family members or others they were close to spent two days in November on a farm in Coconut Creek where they groomed, walked with and even shared secrets with miniature horses in a form of equine therapy designed to deal with bereavement. The camp is free to all children in the Broward area ages 5-18 who have lost a loved one in the past two years. “They can talk to a little horse, and that horse won’t tell anybody,” said Abby Mosher, who runs Tomorrow’s Rainbow, a 2.5-acre day camp south of Wiles Road. “Then one day when the child feels safer, they may talk to someone else.” Benjamin Boyden-Bailey, 13, an eighth grader at Glades Middle School in Miramar, said the death of his father from brain cancer eight months ago left him with a deep sense of loss. He said that in his two days at camp, he has made connections with the horses and the other campers who have suffered similar trauma. “I have learned that life is not always fair,” said Boyden-Bailey. “Things don’t always go your way. Being with other people going through what I’m going through helps. “And being with a horse is good because a horse will never judge you.” SUN-SENTINEL PHOTO / JIM RASSOL

& safety

Healthy eating through the holidays BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN Parents who have their plates full with holiday hubbub may find it a challenge to eat healthy. Following are suggestions on how to maintain a healthy end-of-year eating regimen. 1. Supply and demand. Stock the refrigerator with healthy, ready-to-eat items such as low-fat string cheese, hard-boiled eggs, lean turkey and yogurt. Freeze grapes and sectioned oranges, and keep an abundant supply of raw cut-up vegetables on hand. Put these foods in a visible location and use clear containers so they can be seen. 2. Scout out smorgasbords. Survey the buffet line before going through with your plate so you know what the offerings are. Be ‘snobbish’ at a buffet table. Choose foods that are special — ones you don’t normally have access to or seasonal items. Exclude things you can have anytime. Pretend you’re on a tasting mission for the best offerings and sample small quantities. 3. Size matters. To help maintain portion size, choose a small plate or use a regularsized one and put spaces between items. Don’t pile or stack food. Use your fist as a portion size for veggies and starches, and the palm of your hand for servings of meat. Avoid eating directly from a snack bowl; use a plate to monitor serving size. 4. Lowdown on liquids. Drink water before you go to an event and alternate with alcoholic or high-calorie beverages. This will keep you hydrated and feeling full and will slow consumption. If you want something festive, go for sparkling water with

14

Untitled-21 14

southfloridaparenting.com |

a twist of lemon or lime. Most important, moderate alcohol intake as it is high in calories and can increase your appetite and lower your willpower. 5. On-the-job indulgences. Watch out for high-calorie treats others bring into work. Give yourself permission to enjoy one goodie and eat it mindfully. Keep a stash of veggies and fruit on hand to curb cravings. Make a pact with coworkers to bring in one healthy snack each week. 6. Rein in cravings. If you are hungry before a holiday gathering, eat a snack beforehand so you’ll make better food choices when you’re there. You want to be in control when you reach the buffet or dining table. Don’t try to save calories by skipping a meal. It’s a sure way to overeat. 7. Dabbling with dips. Cream-based dips and sauces can be high in fat and calories. If you want to indulge, put a small dollop on your plate and dab food into it rather than pouring it on top. Make it leaner by using reduced-calorie ingredients. Or go with salsa or vinaigrettes. They are packed with flavor but have fewer calories. 8. Keep socializing central. Eat slowly, stop when you are satisfied, move away from the table and socialize. Take a walk, have a round of basketball, play games or just talk. Remember, you are attending the gathering to be with others, not just eat. 9. Eating on the run. When shopping or running errands, bring a snack instead of relying on fast food. Check out nutritional information online so you can make a lower-calorie selection at restaurants.

10. Think fast. The holiday rush may make it hard to plan and execute quick nutritious meals. When you have time, make a list of fast, healthy dinners your family enjoys, post it in a visible location and have the ingredients on hand. 11. Baker’s choice. Brush your teeth, chew gum or sip tea so you won’t be tempted to dip into the bowl while you’re baking, or eat before you begin. Wait until you have the finished product — a cookie or bar — and have just one. Lighten up recipes by substituting ingredients. 12. Calculate and compensate. If you overeat during one meal, go lighter on the next and increase your exercise. Better yet, plan ahead. Cut back on desserts and carbs a few days before events so you can have that treat without feeling guilty. Most important, don’t deprive yourself or you may binge. Moderation is key.

Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren, who has lived a health-conscious lifestyle for more than 30 years.

MORE QUICK TIPS

+ Manage and maintain. Trying to diet during the holiday season may lead to discouragement. Focus instead on maintaining your current weight and healthy lifestyle choices. + Log-a-rhythm. One component to successful dieting is to keep a food journal. Write down what you eat so you have a record of when you had that cookie, fruitcake or eggnog. This will help you make good choices. + Comfort and joy. Rather than leaning on comfort food to cope with holiday stress, find other outlets to help you calm down: Read a book, listen to music, take a bath, call a friend or go for a walk or run. Also don’t confuse fatigue and hunger. Get at least seven hours of sleep each night so you have energy for these busy days. + Get moving. Try to maintain an exercise regimen throughout the holidays. Park a little farther from public buildings, walk once around the mall before beginning your shopping or get up 20 minutes early to take a run.

Taking the kids — why families need travel insurance BY EILEEN OGINTZ TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY It would have been a perfect vacation day, if not for the emergency room. After a bad fall on a Colorado ski slope, the ski patrollers who brought me down the mountain thought I was seriously injured, thus the ambulance trip to the ER, the extra oxygen in high altitude and a CAT scan. Fortunately, I wasn’t as badly injured as they thought, but we didn’t find that out until several hours had passed and we’d racked up more than $1,000 in out-of-pocket medical expenses. Luckily, I had travel insurance that picked up all those out-of-pocket expenses. I know most families don’t think they need travel insurance, but it really can save the day — and lots of money as costs can run into six figures in an emergency. “You can be in a taxi and get in an accident,” notes Dr. William Brady, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Virginia Medical School, who also serves as the medical director for Allianz, one of the largest travel insurance providers in the world. A baby’s cold develops into a serious respiratory infection, for example, when you are vacationing on a small Caribbean island. Dr. Brady oversees the team deciding if someone with Allianz insurance needs to be medically evacuated, and he has handled cases where children have had to be evacuated

for various ills because appropriate medical care wasn’t available. According to Dr. Brady, most Americans traveling overseas simply assume medical care will be comparable to what they are accustomed to in the United States, but that is not necessarily the case. Families also don’t realize that many travel insurance policies (figure the cost at 5 percent to 10 percent the cost of your trip) cover kids under 17 free when traveling with an insured immediate family member, said Lynne Peters, product director at Insuremytrip.com. (Just make sure to read the fine print — will the kids be covered if traveling with grandparents? Is it one child per one insured adult?) Remember medical evacuation is just one way travel insurance comes into play. Consider that each year, Allianz receives 8,000 requests for help, but only 400 require medical evacuation for seriously injured or ill customers. CONSIDER HOW MUCH IT COULD COST IF: + Your child gets an ear infection and you must reschedule flights + Your father gets sick and you have to cancel the trip that you’ve already paid for + Weather causes airline delays that keep you from getting to your vacation destination for several days — or leaves you stranded when you miss your connecting flight + Your luggage gets lost — and doesn’t reappear before you board your cruise ship + You fall on a cruise excursion and break a bone + The school schedule is extended because of snow days and you have to postpone your trip I’ve either experienced these situations or know of people who have — in most cases, without travel insurance and incurring hefty expenses as a result. BEFORE YOU BUY, READ THE FINE PRINT: + Can you cancel for any reason, if you have a certain upgraded policy? + If you are going to an exotic locale, do you have enough coverage in case a medical evacuation is required? + Are all of your kids covered free? + Do you have to pay expenses

16

Untitled-21 16

southfloridaparenting.com |

upfront? (In some countries, patients are required to pay first. Travel insurance can guarantee those costs.) + Should you buy the resort or cruise company’s policy? (Third-party insurance is often more comprehensive compared to what is offered from the cruise line, says Rachel Taft, a spokesperson for the travel insurance comparison site SquareMouth.) + Are you covered if you have a preexisting condition? If you are still thinking travel insurance isn’t necessary this winter, consider the unpredictable weather. According to Taft, inclement weather accounted for a quarter of the claims last winter. Airlines typically don’t help you with anything other than rebooking a flight — and that might be three days later — if weather is to blame. One year, we had to scuttle an entire Caribbean vacation when a blizzard stopped air traffic in the northeast for several days. By the time we could have gotten a flight, we would have had to come home to get back to work. Others were stuck at their vacation destinations, having to pay for several more nights of lodging. And there is the domino effect. When 1,200 Chicago flights were canceled one day in mid-December, those connecting through Chicago were in trouble, as were those elsewhere in the country when planes and crews couldn’t get where they were scheduled to be. Travel insurance can help travelers with expenses like hotels, meals and prepaid expenses (for the nights they miss at a resort or on a cruise ship), said Taft, as long as you have bought your policy before the storm is named. Travel Delay coverage may cover the unused part of your prepaid expenses or reasonable extra expenses you incur during your delay, said Daniel Durazo, spokesman for Allianz. He noted the company’s most popular Classic Plan provides coverage of $200 per person per day with a maximum of $800. The best part of travel insurance: the de-stress factor. You’re worried enough when vacation plans get derailed, especially when there’s a medical emergency. With travel insurance, you make a call and they’ve got your back. That’s worth it to me.

Florida lines up ice, snow, parades and more for the holidays Celebrating the holidays in Florida is easier than remembering the names of Santa’s reindeer this season, with a multitude of events across the state. Through Jan. 6: Universal Orlando holiday events, Orlando. New this year is Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which will feature themed decorations and lighting, holiday-themed food, and performances by the Frog Choir and Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees. At night, projection mapping and lighting will wrap Hogwarts castle. The Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s has more than a dozen balloons and 15 floats with characters and Santa Claus. Also returning is Grinchmas at Seuss Landing with the “Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular” and extra-cost breakfast with the Grinch and friends. Mannheim Steamroller will perform Dec. 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17. On-site hotels will each have holiday-themed activities as well. UniversalOrlando.com Through Jan. 31: Nights of Lights Festival and Celebration, St. Augustine. This inspiring display of more than 2 million tiny white lights adorning the palm trees and buildings throughout the city’s historic district is based on a custom by the town’s original Spanish colonists, who placed a white candle in their windows to brighten the nights during the Christmas holidays. Special events include tours of ancient buildings and inns led by storytellers in period clothing and rollicking train and trolley tours through the narrow brick streets. floridashistoriccoast.com Through Dec. 30: Epcot International Festival of the Holidays. This Epcot tradition showcases holiday traditions from around the world including music, costumes and cuisine. The annual Candlelight Processional includes celebrity guest narrators accompanied by a massed choir and orchestra for a retelling of the Christmas story. disneyworld.disney.go.com Through Jan. 7: ICE! at Gaylord Palms Resort, Orlando. With more than 2 million pounds of carved ice, ICE! is back. Kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll see handcarved ice sculptures, ice slides, live ice carving and a celebration of holidays from various cultures. Check website for prices. Gaylord Palms, 6000 W. Osceola Parkway. ChristmasAtGaylordPalms.com Dec. 1: Florida Keys Holiday Festival,

Islamorda. Holiday parade and festival featuring a 35-foot, snow-blowing community tree and 20 tons of snow for fun on snow mountain. 4 to 10 p.m. At Founder’s Park, 87000 Overseas Highway. islamoradachamber.com Dec. 2: Snowfest, Naples. More than 100 tons of snow is the star of this annual community event in southwest Florida. There will be snow mountains to climb, tobaggan and snow skiing hills as well as an ice skating rink, full-scale carnival, arts and crafts, petting zoo, pony rides and more. 3 to 9 p.m. $2, ages 3 and under free. At the Golden Gate Community Center, 4701 Golden Gate Parkway. colliercountyparks.com Dec. 3: Christmas Tree Lighting at Whitehall, Palm Beach. Festivities include holiday music played on an original 1,249-pipe organ, choir performances and holiday refreshments. The event culminates with Henry Flagler’s young-

est descendants lighting the Grand Hall Christmas tree. 3 to 5 p.m. Free with museum admission. One Whitehall Way. flaglermuseum.us Dec. 9: Holiday Boat Parade, Key Largo. Blackwater Sound shimmers as decorated boats parade along the shoreline in celebration of the holiday season. 7:30 p.m. keylargoboatparade.com Dec. 19-23: Flagler Museum Holiday Evening Tours, Palm Beach. Families can tour Whitehall after hours, discover the origins of American Christmas traditions and see Whitehall by the glow of the original 1902 light fixtures. Every visitor will receive a traditional Flagler Museum Christmas cracker following the tour. A choral group will sing carols, and holiday refreshments will be served. The Museum Store will remain open for holiday shopping. $25 for adults, $15 for children under age 18. Advance purchase required. One Whitehall Way. flaglermuseum.us

Stress-less family holiday celebrations BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN The pursuit of the perfect holiday often ends in seasonal stress as families seek to juggle time and energy demands as well as financial and social obligations. To reduce holiday frenzy and fatigue, experts suggest parents realign expectations, prioritize activities and carve out time for self. That’s what Erica Kilpatrick Tarpine did when the doctor put her on modified bed rest early last November. “I was four months pregnant at the time and hadn’t really thought about the holidays, so I was pretty nervous. How were we going to get everything done?” said the mother of a now 3-year-old and 4-month old. “Normally we go all out this time of year, but this would be different. So I started by making a list of things we normally do, eliminated what wasn’t necessary and then plotted out days to get things done.” Good idea, says Victoria Papi, a timemanagement and organizing expert with Keep It Simple Consulting. “Look at what your family did and didn’t enjoy most about the last holiday season, and then make a list of holiday activities and prioritize what’s most important to you,” she said. “Next, get out the calendar and set aside specific days for specific to-dos. Pencil in regularly scheduled activities first, then mark off days and times for holiday-related items such as shopping, wrapping, decorating, baking and addressing greeting cards, as well as performances, social events, visits and volunteer work. If in the process, you see a continuous string of busy days, eliminate low-priority items and make room for down time for you and your family.”

That’s what Amy Hemphill has done. After making a vow to keep her holidays uncluttered, this mother of three simplified and organized so stress didn’t take root in her home. One change she made was to become a smarter shopper. “We started picking up gifts for people throughout the year and set them aside. This avoided impulse buying, kept me from having to be on the run and spread out the spending,” she said. “I also purchase gifts online; I can avoid the crowds and everything comes right to my door. Sometimes I even get them wrapped for free.” More recently, Hemphill cut back on the number of presents she buys to reduce cost and focus on the meaning of the holiday. “A couple of years ago, we had a conversation with those we normally buy gifts for and suggested we just get together and share a bottle of wine. It’s been great, and we all enjoy it,” she said. “We’ve also increased the number of handcrafted items we give and buy fewer, more thoughtful things for the children.” Diane Postell, LCSW, a relationship therapist, said this is wise. “The time, energy and cost that go along with gift-giving are big holiday stressors,” she said. “One way to reduce this stress is to set a budget and stick with it. Then discuss your spending allowance with those you normally exchange gifts with and suggest low- or no-cost ways to show you care.” Holiday events and entertaining can also raise stress levels. If an overload of invitations and events threatens to run you ragged, opt out. “It’s OK to say no and not feel guilty about it,” Papi said. “If you want to show your appreciation for being remembered, drop off an inexpensive hostess gift and say, ‘Thanks for the invite.’” If you want to entertain stressfree, downsize your expectations and time it right. “Wait until schedules slow, then consolidate your social obligations into one open house,” Papi said. “Cut prep time by using market, deli or bakery services, or ask friends to bring appetizers or come over early and lend a hand in the kitchen. Kids can help, too, with cleaning and other responsibilities.” Whatever you do, save time for

yourself. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and setting aside time for yourself is the best way to reduce stress,” Postell said. “Schedule at least 15 minutes of relaxation each day, and sometime during the season, plan one activity you personally enjoy to recharge your own battery.” Tarpine does this. “I like to take off several weekdays leading up to the holidays and go to the mall and just sit, sip coffee and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the season,” she said. “I had to forgo that last year, but I learned some important lessons in the process: to prioritize and plan what’s most important to me and then to sit back and enjoy what the holiday truly affords.”

Denise Morrison Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren.

QUICK TIPS TO REDUCE HOLIDAY STRESS To better savor seasonal bliss, consider these tips: + History helps. Look at what your family enjoyed last holiday season, and then eliminate things that aren’t important to you. + Finish early. Finish most of your holiday chores the week before Christmas so you can sit back and savor those last few days. + Outline a budget. Create a budget and stick with it. Find low- or no-cost ways to show you care: host a game night or make handmade presents. + Shop savvy. Internet and catalog shopping will save time and energy. But if you need or want to shop in stores, go on off days, such as Tuesday and Wednesday, when the weekend supply has been replenished, retailers are fully staffed and fewer people are out shopping. Consider buying gifts throughout the year to avoid impulse buying, rushing around and financial strain. + Wrap it up. Wrap gifts in one or two sessions to save time. Use one designated paper for each child so you don’t have to attach tags. Use gift bags when you can. + Contain cards. If holiday cards have become an obligation,

cut back and send only to people you don’t see often. Or wait and send a post-holiday greeting in January or February. You will have more time to put it together, and your recipients should have more time to read it. + Plan your baking. Stock up on supplies prior to baking so you have all the ingredients on hand when you are ready to bake. Prepare all the mixes one day, put them in the refrigerator or freezer and pull them out when you are ready to bake and decorate. Or host a cookie exchange so you don’t have to bake so many different kinds of treats. + Simplify mealtimes. Plan your menu for the week and make one big trip to the store. Double or triple soups and casseroles, then freeze portions so you have something to draw from later. Delegate kitchen chores. Even preschoolers can set the table. + Organize your packing. After the holidays, get rid of items you no longer use. Pack and label decorations by rooms so in subsequent years you can do one room at a time if you need to. + Travel light. Alternate the years you visit distant family. Or travel in January when your calendar slows down. If you stay home, plan a family conference

call or create a preplanned video as a holiday greeting. If you travel, mail packages ahead of time so you don’t have to take them along. + Choose events wisely. If an event feels more like an obligation than an invitation, it’s a clue you may need to opt out. Show your appreciation for being remembered by dropping off an inexpensive hostess gift. + Prep the kids. When children’s routines are off, it can create behavioral problems and so increase family stress. Keep your children on schedule as much as possible, and make sure they get plenty of rest and eat balanced meals. Let them know in advance if their schedule will be different. If you are out and your child starts to show signs of fatigue or frustration, leave immediately to avoid a meltdown. Teach relaxation skills such as S.T.A.R.: Stop, Take a breath And Relax. Prepare them for holiday performances by laying out required clothing and shoes the night before. + Refrain from problem relationships. Strained relationships can be a volatile source of holiday stress. Limit time with these people and have an escape plan — a prearranged signal with your partner if you need to exit. This is not a time to fix

problems. Set aside grievances for a more appropriate time of discussion, be gracious and maintain a sense of humor. Practice forgiveness and charity. And remember others may be feeling holiday stress, too. + Cope with change. Sometimes a change in family configuration through death, divorce or other can add seasonal stress. Realize that families change, and traditions often change with them. Hold onto those rituals you can and want to embrace, but accept that others may have to go. Acknowledge your feelings and realize it’s normal to feel sadness or grief. Cry and express feeling when you need to and allow your children to do the same. If you feel isolated or depressed, seek out support. + Save time for spouse and self. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting at least seven hours of sleep each night, scheduling in some form of exercise and eating a balanced diet. Be aware of your triggers and have someone you can share your feelings with. Equally important is to schedule one-on-one time with your partner. Sit down without distractions after the children have gone to bed and talk. Or hire a sitter and go for a night out.

17 budget-friendly holiday traditions BY SARAH LYONS 'Tis the season for shopping for presents, cooking fancy meals, decorating homes for the holidays, and celebrating with friends and family. The holidays are a fun and exciting time, but all of that fun can start to stretch the pocketbook. No matter your budget, families can still enjoy meaningful holiday traditions. Make cookies for Santa (and for others). Bake some special cookies for Santa, but set aside a few dozen for local firefighters or police officers and deliver them with your kids. Have a holiday movie marathon. Watch your favorite holiday movies as a family while enjoying some popcorn, hot cocoa and candy canes. Make an ornament. Make a new ornament, as a family, each year. When the kids move out, they will have a box full of decorations for their own tree. Easy ideas could be salt-dough ornaments, or filling a plastic ball with photos, ticket stubs or glitter and adding the date.

Craft a countdown. Create a homemade advent or Hannukah countdown with construction or scrapbook paper. Holiday tunes. Play holiday music each morning as you are getting ready for your day. Lights tour. Load up the family car and go on a tour of holiday light displays in the area, or visit the three-mile drivethrough Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek (holidaylightsdrivethru.com). In Palm Beach County, families can visit the free Winter Wonderland at Hoffman’s Cocolate in Greenacres (hoffmans.com). Provide a meal. Check the needs of a local food pantry and help them stock up on items that can be used for holiday dinners. Family pajamas. Pick out matching pajamas for the whole family to wear on Christmas morning. For a low-cost options, use plain colored T-shirts and basic flannel pants.

Bless others. Have the kids pick out a new toy to donate to a local charity that provides gifts to children in need. Also consider sorting through old toys and clothing to donate to charity before any new gifts arrive. Visit Santa. Take the kids to visit Santa, or write him a letter and mail it. Clothing drive. Start a clothing drive by going through your closet and donate items no longer needed with those less fortunate. Collect new socks, hats, and gloves in your community to donate as well. Caroling. Gather friends and family together and go caroling in your neighborhood or at local nursing home or Ronald McDonald House. Holiday hunt. Fill Easter eggs with Christmas candy or hide candy canes around the house and let the children find them. Make reindeer food. Mix rolled oats with red and green sugar sprinkles. Have the kids sprinkle it on the lawn before bed for the reindeer to snack on while Santa is visiting your home. Seasonal reads. Collect holiday books, wrap them in festive paper, and have the kids open and read one each day during the holidays. Consider adding one new book each year. Campout. After trimming the tree, get out the sleeping bags and “camp out” under it for the night. Christmas breakfast. Make a big breakfast Christmas morning. Make a breakfast casserole that can be prepared the night before so you can enjoy the morning with your family.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

A year has gone by and we are grateful to have brought awareness on allergies and asthma. Knowledge brings power and inclusiveness, no kid or adult should feel isolated or different because he or she cannot enjoy a run in the park or the eggnog. We have shared useful information throughout the year and we have decided to share some basic knowledge to help you promote an inclusive environment during this holiday season. WHAT IS AN ALLERGIST An allergist is a doctor who is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases such as: Asthma and frequent cough; Hay fever; Sinus infections; Eye allergies; Reactions to food, insect stings, drugs; Skin allergies, including hives and eczema; Immune system disorders that might cause frequent infections. Anyone with allergies and asthma should be able to feel good, be active all day and sleep well at night. There’s no need to accept less. An allergist is trained to find the source of your symptoms, treat it and help you find relief and feel healthy. WHAT’S AN ALLERGY - a reaction to an otherwise harmless substance like pet dander or pollen. The body’s antibodies “read” the protein contained in the allergen as an enemy and react to mistakenly protect the body. Anaphylaxis: the most serious form of reaction, it can be life-threatening and all efforts must be conducted to avoid it at all costs. Food allergy: Not everyone knows what a food allergy is. If you think about it, before being diagnosed, did you really know what gluten was or that lactose intolerance is different from milk allergy? School parties, family gatherings and field trips can be stressful instead of fun and joyful. To bypass fear and let things run smooth, put yourself in charge of cooking the allergen free dishes. It is as simple as communicating and being proactive, disclosing the ingredients and being creative. Pet allergy: It’s common belief that the pet’s fur is the culprit but we know, it’s the protein contained in the saliva and urine of the furry animal that causes the allergies. Control the environment and don’t let your pet jump on the sofa or on your bed. Environmental allergies: Pollen and dust are the most common allergens, there are some chances you could be allergic to house plants and even pine, but you may want to watch out for synthetic plants, scented potpourri or room fresheners that are catalysts for humidity, accumulated dust and eventually mold. Eczema: Even though we live in South Florida, the first few weeks of the year with the drop in temperatures, you could experience what’s generally known as “dry skin”, not to be confused with eczema, which is a series of skin conditions that cause the skin to be itchy, red and inflamed. WHAT’S ASTHMA - a disease that affects the airways that bring oxygen in and out of the lungs. The airways become inflamed and swell, which makes breathing difficult. We wish you the most wonderful time with your families and friends.

Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care has 17 convenient locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. To schedule an appointment call 1-877-4-ALLERGY or visit florida-allergy.com

12 ways to a more meaningful holiday season BY DENISE YEARIAN In the midst of holiday hoopla, people often lose sight of the significance of the season. The following is a list of a dozen ways to create a more meaningful holiday celebration. 1. Grassroots giving. One of the best ways to make your holiday more meaningful is to adopt a family from a local charity. When you call, ask for a family with children your own kids’ ages. Then if you normally give your child five gifts, suggest giving three and let him pick out two for each needy child. 2. Aspiring words. Have each family member secretly write one non-monetary thing they want to work for, wish for and pray for in the coming year. Then put it in a decorative envelope and place it on the table or in a tree. During your holiday celebration, share it with your family and discuss ways everyone can help that person fulfill his goal. 3. Go green. Reuse holiday wrapping paper to cover another gift, line a drawer or draw on the reverse side. Holiday cards can be recycled, too. Cut them in half and use the blank side to jot down reminder notes or let your kids cut them up and make new cards for next year. Christmas trees can also be recycled. South Florida cities and counties have tree recycling programs, either picking up curbside or with dropoff locations. Check online for the program serving you. 4. Multicultural merriment. Every year, pick one country and find out how they celebrate the holiday season. Make mock passports that can be used year after year. Find out what the culture and traditions are like, learn a few words and try their foods. If you have extended family members from other parts of the country, have them share insights and tell stories about their holiday celebrations. 5. Advent virtues. Make an advent calendar with character traits you want to instill in your family. Pick one virtue each day, discuss what it means and talk about someone in history who displayed that character. Then decide how you and your children can put that virtue into action. For example, extend kindness by raking a neighbor’s leaves or taking cookies to a nearby police or fire station. 6. Family photo tree. Decorate your tree with individual photos of family members taken throughout the year. Mount

images on construction paper, felt or foam, write the date on the back, attach a ribbon and hang it on the tree. Keep photos year after year and add more as you go to remind kids of how blessed they have been throughout their childhood. When your children are grown, pass along the pictures so they can carry on the tradition. 7. Intergenerational experiences. If grandparents have personal items they want to pass along to their grandchildren, the holidays are an opportune time. Suggest they give something that is special to them, along with the story behind it. It could be one of grandma’s old dolls, a piece of jewelry, a book or even a photograph. If the kids are old enough, they can record a video of the story for a keepsake. 8. Mindful of military. Have your child write a letter of appreciation to someone in the military. Include a parent’s email address, and ask the service person to

send a reply email along with pictures if he or she has them. The Internet has several websites that provide officers’ names and care package suggestions. If your children love animals, check out Operation Military Pride (www.operationmilitarypride.org), where you can provide cooling vests, protective “doggles” and other items for military dogs working in the war zone. 9. Warm fuzzies. Families so often forget to share positive and encouraging words with one another. Have your family sit in a circle and pass a fuzzy teddy bear around. As you do, have the person holding the bear say something he appreciates about one sitting to his right or left. This will set the tone for an uplifting celebration and teach your kids how to give words of encouragement to others. 10. Bird buffet. Decorate an outdoor tree with pinecones rolled in peanut butter

and birdseed, popcorn and cranberry garland, and orange and apple slices that have been attached to pipe cleaners or opened paperclips and hung on the tree’s boughs. This is a way to take care of neighboring wildlife and wish them a happy holiday. 11. Family fitness. Incorporate the holiday season into a family fitness routine. Decide on one activity you can do together each day to stay fit — walk around the neighborhood and look at lights, jump rope to a favorite holiday song or play a round of basketball while the pie is baking. Then make it a family New Year’s resolution. 12. Video newsletter. Each child can take turns being the anchorperson while you record, but make it more than just reading off news. Take footage from the kids’ bedrooms where they are showing a favorite stuffed animal or in the yard performing a newly acquired skill. Send copies on the DVD with your holiday cards, or attach it to a holiday greeting email and donate the money you save on stamps to charity.

Sensory kids: The Top 10 best holiday gifts to get them BY MEAGAN RUFFING Gifts can be tricky for kids like my son Dylan. Sure, they like all the same things that other kids do, but when their world already seems overwhelming, a calming sensory-activity-based toy is really what they crave. Think simple. Check out these top 10 gifts for your sensory-seeking child. 1. Water Beads. These things are amazing. They start out as tiny little beads (about the size of a tip of a pen) but when you soak them in water for 4-6 hours, they expand to marble-looking bubbles. This will probably be one of your child’s favorite gifts because it is so unique. The Frog Life Cycle Pond Kit is one of my favorites (thehomegrownpreschooler.com). 2. Rice bucket with small toys. Just go to the dollar store and pick up a cheap shoebox container. Grab a (big) bag of rice and a few trinket-like toys. Dump the bag of rice in the shoebox container and hide the toys in the rice. This activity will keep your child busy for a long time. 3. Lego lunchbox. This one is awesome. Do you have any old-school lunch boxes lying around — the tin ones that your kids like to play with? Take a Lego base, score it to fit the inside lid of the lunchbox. Superglue this down. Add a few Lego pieces inside the box. Voila! Your child now has their very own Lego lunchbox to

46

Untitled-17 46

southfloridaparenting.com |

play with at home or on-the-go. 4. Moon Sand. Hands-down one of the best sensory-based activities you will ever come across. Moon Sand can be bought pretty much anywhere. All major retailers carry it, so plan to spend about $10-20 for a nicely sized kit. Moon sand is similar to playdough, but it feels like sand. When you pick it up with your hand, it falls through your fingers just like sand does but without the mess. This is also great for hiding toys in. 5. Playdough. This is a family favorite. Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) like the way playdough feels because it is relaxing. The feeling of squishing something and molding something into whatever your imagination will come up with is a soothing activity for anyone, but especially those who have a hard time processing things around them. 6. Stress ball. A simple stress ball is great for children with anxiety. This is also an ideal tool to have in your child’s classroom. His teacher can store it in her desk and when she sees that your child is starting to feel overwhelmed, stressed or fidgety, she can give him the stress ball. This is a great way to get the child to refocus their attention without making a big deal about it in front of the class. 7. Balloons. This was one I had never thought of before, but my son’s occupational therapist used it in one of his sessions. Buy a bag of regular old balloons. Blow them up. Let your child toss them in the air and swat them around, and watch his face light up with a smile. Better yet, join in on the fun and take turns hitting it back and forth with each other.

8. Lollipops, gum and Tic-Tacs. These would make great stocking stuffers. They are small, practical pieces of candy that help with oral stimulation. I use these all the time with my son when he is having a hard time focusing. Whether he is being hyper, moody or both, he knows he can go to the pantry in our home and take one of these items whenever he needs to. 9. Electric toothbrush. There are so many cool toothbrushes out there for kids now. Chances are, your child has already showed you (and begged) for that new Barbie or Superman toothbrush. Use this as an opportunity to teach them about the right way to brush their teeth and invest in a quality, electric toothbrush. These are great for making sure your child is brushing their teeth for the suggested two minutes, and the vibrating of the toothbrush head helps children actually feel the process of what they are doing. 10. Seamless socks and tag-less shirts and pants. Clothes can feel like the end-all be-all for children with SPD, and most families steer clear of asking friends and family to buy clothes for their child for Christmas because what feels good one day for your child doesn’t always feel good the next day. Chances are, your child’s wardrobe consists of primarily seamless and tag-less items. Under Armor is a great brand because there are no tags on their clothes. Seamless socks can be found online and look for elastic-free pants so that your child doesn’t have to worry about getting their pants to “feel right.” You and your child’s daily lives are probably stressful enough. Make things as easy as possible this year and add sensory toys to your holiday shopping checklist.
