Supporting a mom during a high-risk pregnancy BY SARAH LYONS

y first three pregnancies were easy. I felt great, barely had morning sickness, remained active and was able to maintain all of my pre-pregnancy activities. Then I experienced a triplet pregnancy, and everything I knew about pregnancy went out the window. For weeks, I barely slept but read everything book and blog I could find on triplets, high order multiples pregnancy, and prematurity. The information was overwhelming and terrifying. Once I came out of shock, I realized I had to move forward with a new normal for the health of my babies. Thankfully, I received a lot of support from my friends and family. Here’s how you can help friends in similar situations:

LISTEN

A high-risk pregnancy is stressful. Mom is usually worried about the health of the baby, or babies, as well as herself. She may also be concerned about her other household or workrelated responsibilities which she may not be able to keep up on due to bed rest or the physical limitations of pregnancy. Having someone to talk with can be very therapeutic. When you visit, listen attentively and offer support. A short email or text shows you care while leaving it in her hands to respond when it’s most convenient.

VISIT

Many moms with a high-risk pregnancy are put on bed rest at home or in the hospital. While resting in bed may sound like a nice vacation for a busy mom, it is extremely boring and lonely and typically gives mom too much time for worrying. A visitor can really brighten mom’s day. Offer to deliver fast food or homemade meals to her. A care package with movies, magazines and treats is also nice.

HELP WITH THE OLDER KIDS

Mom may feel like she is letting down her older kids because she cannot be her usual self. Show support by offering to pick up the kids, even if it’s 10 SOUTH FLORIDA PARENTING • southfloridaparenting.com

just for a couple hours. Driving the kids to school or activities is also a big help. Keeping the kids in their regularly scheduled activities helps lessen the anxiety they feel with the changes at home.

STOP BY THE STORE

Offer to pick up a few things the family needs if you will be out running errands. Many grocery stores now offer drive-through pickup. Have the family order and pay for groceries online, then pick them up and deliver them. Offering to help put them away is appreciated. If mom is allowed ride in a wheelchair during her outings, offer to drive her to the store and assist as she tries to get her shopping done.

PROVIDE A MEAL

Providing meals for the family during a high risk pregnancy is a huge help. The family, including mom, need to eat three meals a day. Bring easy-toheat casseroles and freezer meals or stock the pantry with quick fix meals and snacks. Also consider lunch and breakfast. Try setting up a meal train for other friends and family to bring meals as well.

HELP AROUND THE HOUSE

Offer to take care of chores such as sweeping the floor, folding loads of laundry, vacuuming, or doing dishes. Even a little bit of tidying can make a difference. Consider hiring a cleaning service for the family until mom is back on her feet. During high-risk pregnancy, mom often feels overwhelmed with the things she is missing, including time with her spouse and other children, her work and normal daily responsibilities. By assisting with the basic needs of the family and being a sounding board for her concerns and fears, you will relieve some of the stress so mom can focus on the health of herself and her child.

Mom's prenatal nutrition and exercise deliver benefits to baby BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN

any pregnant women know that maintaining a moderate exercise routine and a nutritionally sound diet provide both shortand long-term benefits to the mother and baby. But routines and regimens that may be helpful during one stage of gestation may be detrimental during another, and nausea and fatigue may compromise women’s fitness routines. Small frequent meals are a good remedy for morning sickness — and heartburn, too — said Emily Moore, RD, LDN, a prenatal nutrition educator. She advises women to eat six meals every two to three hours and consume fluids between meals, rather than during. It may also be helpful eat before getting out of bed. “To avoid heartburn, don’t lie down immediately after eating, lay with your head slightly elevated, and avoid caffeine, chocolate and highly seasoned foods,” Moore said. “Another common com12 SOUTH FLORIDA PARENTING • southfloridaparenting.com

plaint, constipation, can be prevented by increasing high-fiber foods and fluid intake and engaging in moderate exercise.” Moore believes good prenatal nutrition is paramount because it can affect the child’s metabolic and endocrine health throughout childhood and into adulthood. She suggests choosing whole grain products, fruits and vegetables for fiber, vitamin, mineral and antioxidant benefits, and low-fat dairy products for calcium content. Likewise, meat and beans provide protein and iron, which are necessary to healthy cell development and delivering oxygen to the baby. “Many women are concerned about eating fish due to its mercury content, but fish contains essential Omega-3 fatty acids, DHA, which is vital to brain, eye and central nervous system development,” she said. “Rather than crossing fish off your list, choose ones low in mercury and high in Omega-3, such as floun-

der, herring, fresh salmon, sardines, squid and fresh-water trout. Omega-3 fortified eggs are a good option, too.” Exercise is just as important as good nutrition, but routines and regimens that may be helpful during one stage of gestation may be detrimental during another. As the fetus grows, mothers may find certain positions and movements increasingly uncomfortable, tiring or even harmful. Certified Pilate’s instructor Mara Raskin warns pregnant moms that they should avoid supine and inverse positions by the beginning of their second trimester as these can restrict the baby’s blood flow. “During this time, the hormone Relaxin also kicks in, making ligament looser and joints more vulnerable to injury. And as the belly expands, the body’s center of gravity shifts and can cause stress on the lower back and pelvic muscles,” she said. At this point, Raskin said, women should focus on the upper and middle

back, shoulders and chest muscles. “This will support their shifting weight, help maintain posture and strengthen the muscles that support the spine,” she said. “Women should also strengthen the pelvic floor muscles by drawing them in and up with Kegal exercises.” Rose Willard, a personal trainer, altered her routine to prepare for the road ahead when she learned she was pregnant. “I start with a five-minute warm-up on the elliptical trainer, followed by weight training — using less weights and more repetitions than before — to strengthen both my upper and lower body,” she said. “I then do transverse abdominal exercises to stabilize my spine and end with another 15 minutes of cardio, making sure my heart rate doesn’t exceed the recommended 140 beats per minute. To strengthen the pelvic floor and PC muscles, I also do Kegal exercises.” Active mom Hunter Clark-Fields decided to focus on her back and abdominal muscles to ease back pain and prepare for labor while she was pregnant with her second child. “In addition to the back and ab equipment I use at the gym, I do a lot of balancing poses and planks to strengthen my abs and back. I also do cat stretches, downward dogs and some gentle side-to-side twisting,” she said. “As the pregnancy has progressed I just listen to my body, and if an exercise doesn’t feel right, I don’t do it.” Good idea, said Dr. Deborah Ehrenthal, and OB/Gyn specialist. “If you’re in doubt

or feel discomfort, don’t do it. Most important, if you experience bleeding or pain, stop and talk with your doctor. It may be completely unrelated, but it should be checked out,” she said. During exercise, mothers-to-bed should wear loose, layered clothing and a supportive bra. Sip on water to stay hydrated, and precede and end workouts with a small protein-carbohydrate snack to provide quick and long-lasting energy and maintain muscle. That’s what Willard does. “I’ll have a natural peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole grain bread about an hour beforehand and a banana and whey protein shake afterward,” she says. “I’ve also added 300 calories to my diet per day and have increased the frequency of my meals because I’m always hungry.”
