The Fort Lauderdale Air Show is bringing the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds to Fort Lauderdale Beach May 5-6. ‘Rescue’ exhibit coming to Museum of Discovery & Science BY JENNIFER JHON, SOUTH FLORIDA PARENTING EDITOR On the heels of its new Science Park opening, the Museum of Discovery and Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale is adding even more family fun and learning with “Rescue,” an interactive exhibition that allows visitors to learn about and experience high-intensity rescue scenarios carried out by emergency personnel in the air, on land and at sea. The new exhibit opens Saturday, May 19, with free admission for museum guests from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and an Eye of The Storm: Hurricane Science Mitigation and Preparedness event. The Eye of the Storm event will include interactive weather briefings and demonstrations by local meteorologists, presentations by FIU Wall of Wind Researchers, NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters, and live theater shows and demon-

strations, according to a museum news release. Developed in Australia, “Rescue” highlights the technological tools and vital skills needed in various emergency situations. Activity challenges such as locating a missing person will show the importance of teamwork and training. The interactive elements of “Rescue” include a life-sized rescue helicopter simulator, experiencing what it’s like to escape from a burning building, riding a jet ski to rescue a swimmer, role-playing as a news team reporter and more. “Rescue” is sponsored by Holy Cross Hospital and runs through Sept. 3.

Popular ice cream pop-up extends its run BY JOHNNY DIAZ, SUN SENTINEL We get the feeling that the Museum of Ice Cream, which opened last December, doesn’t really want to close. The Miami Beach attraction has extended its run for a final time, and will now close May 13. Museum officials previously said that Miami Beach attraction would close Feb. 26 before extending that to April 29. The four-story pop-up museum at 3400 Collins Ave. in the Faena District is a sweet kiss to all things icy and cool. Rooms are bedecked with bananas, gummy bears and giant pink bonbons. As visitors stroll through the rooms, they can sample frozen treats. Since its opening, the museum has drawn over 250,000 people including

students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High who were offered free admission last month. Model Kate Upton surprised them at the end of their visit. Visitors have been known to jump into a mini-pool topped with sprinkles which became an environmental issue in January and was then resolved, according to the city of Miami Beach. Along with increased sports participation also comes 7> %>5/37.34 /%.# 2=/ %>$,/)9 *%-& '%/". 63%>' 7- 7 &%'&3/ /%.# 2=/ 53/-7%> -)<3. =2 %>$,/%3. -&7> 6=).8 Sports that involve jumping, twisting and pivoting can put tremendous amounts of strain on the knee, which is one of the most commonly injured joints in young female athletes. One of the most serious knee injuries is a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Nationally, ACL injuries are on the rise in young athletes with an estimated 250,000 ACL injuries each year. Female athletes are of particular concern with four to six times greater risk than their male counterparts. Fortunately, education and training programs are available in South Florida that focus on preventing ACL injuries. For instance, the Nicklaus Children’s Sports Health Center in Pinecrest incorporates muscle strengthening, motor skill coordination, agility drills and other training aimed at reducing the risk of an ACL injury. Prevention is vital because an ACL injury will typically result in surgical reconstruction and up to 12 months of rehabilitation. Even after your daughter is back in action playing sports there can be long-term consequences, including a 50 percent risk of developing osteoarthritis within a decade and a 25 percent chance of re-injury. The signs of a knee injury include pain, swelling and difficulty moving the leg or walking even a short distance. If your daughter is injured, seek medical care right away for diagnosis of the problem, which could be a torn ACL, a broken bone, or other muscle or ligament injury. If surgery is needed, it is important to see a pediatric specialist so that the injury can be treated appropriately with regard to your child’s future bone growth.

Surgical reconstruction of the ACL, followed by a well-planned physical therapy program, has a very high long-term success rate, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The initial goals are to stabilize the knee, strengthen the muscles, and restore the full range of motion. Advanced training is often needed to improve motor skill coordination, balance, speed and confidence prior to returning to sport. Once the rehabilitation program is completed, your daughter may be able to return to sports. Tips for protecting the knee Here are some tips for protecting the knee and preventing ACL injuries: ! Perform a proper warm up prior to sports participation that includes dynamic activities such as skipping and side shuffling. ! Participate in 6 to 8 weeks of pre-season conditioning to physically prepare for the sporting season and reduce the risk of injury. ! Wear properly sized footwear with the right tread pattern. For instance, running shoes may “grip” the court too much when playing tennis. If your daughter is wearing shoes with cleats, be sure they are the right length for the condition of the field. ! Inspect the field or court prior to games or practices for any potential hazards such as spilled liquids or potholes. ! Be mindful of fatigue, tell your daughter to listen to her body. If her knee “doesn’t feel right,” or she feels exhausted, it is ok to pull out of the game. Remember that it is far better to prevent a knee injury than to reconstruct a torn ACL. Be sure that your child puts safety first! PBS to debut ‘Kid Stew’ show with creator James Patterson BY JENNIFER SHAPIRO-SACKS, SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Traveling back in time in a phone booth time machine to visit Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci and Cleopatra are just some of the segments that make up the new PBS show “Kid Stew,” created by author James Patterson. The show, which is geared toward preteens, features children from South Florida who perform skits about moments in history, parodies and music videos, tell jokes and interview authors, artists and other children who have a variety of talents. The series premiered in April on WPBT-Ch. 2 and on WXEL-Ch. 42 with a four-episode marathon, according to Joyce Belloise, vice president of Content and Community Partnerships at South Florida PBS. “Kids can expect to have a lot of fun watching it. It’s very fast paced, and really tailored for preteens. While they are learning throughout the program, it’s so much fun they don’t realize they are learning. I know they will enjoy the music video segments, and the cast of kids are so relatable and natural,” she said. One of the stars is Blake McCall, an 11-year-old sixth grader at Bak Middle School of the Arts, who said one of the things he enjoyed most about being a part of “Kid Stew” was bonding and becoming friends with the cast. “I enjoyed being with all my friends because even though we were only together for two weeks, it felt like we were together forever. I made friends that I will have for the rest of my life,” he said. His favorite segments to film were the time-travel scenes he starred in with another cast member, as well as the music videos, especially the one in

which he portrays John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin, he said. Blake, who like the other cast members had to audition for the show, has done musical theater since age 6. He said he hopes children who watch “Kid Stew” learn something while having fun. “I hope they learn that art, creativity, books and reading is fun and that they should keep doing that and to encourage older kids to keep watching PBS Kids and to keep reading,” he said. “Kid Stew” was shot in different locations throughout South Florida, including the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens and Silverball Pinball Museum, both in Delray Beach; Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach; and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in

Boca Raton. The Eunice Joyce Gardiner Charitable Foundation funded the first four episodes and has also provided funding for the next four, Belloise said. Filming for the next four episodes will take place over the summer and Belloise said PBS is working with the kids to see if filming fits into their schedules. Blake said he is “really excited about the show” and plans to be in it again. “I would love to do it again because I think film and TV is really cool and since this is a first-time thing for me and it’s really changed my life, and I made so many friends,” he said.

Parental feeding styles can have consequences for kids BY CASEY SEIDENBERG, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST

eeding children can be challenging. They can be picky eaters. They may start rejecting foods they once loved or feel too afraid to try new ones. They may refuse vegetables and insist that ketchup top everything. All these behaviors are normal, but there are right ways and wrong ways to respond. We can help our kids push through these periods with healthy habits intact, or we can lead them toward overeating, emotional eating or picky eating. Dina Rose is a sociologist, parent educator and author of “It’s Not About the Broccoli: Three Habits to Teach Your Kids for a Lifetime of Healthy Eating,” about creating and nurturing healthy relationships with food. “When parents are really heavily focused on their kids, such as ‘How can I get my kid to eat this,’ or on the food, such as ‘What can I cook that is nutritious,’ it is difficult for them to focus on the interactions they have with their children and what those interactions teach,” she said. In her book, Rose breaks down many of the mistakes parents make when feeding their children. “If you know your type, you can see how it influences your child and then compensate,” she said.

Love is a feeling; food is just food.

THE FOOD POLICE

The profile: Food police do not allow their children to eat candy or drink soda, prohibit anything with high-fructose corn syrup or artificial dyes, and restrict sweets to homemade brownies made with black beans and applesauce. These parents become overly restrictive with less healthful foods or force their children to eat the 16

The profile: Nutritionistas know so much about nutrition and are so worried about getting specific nutrients into their kids that they lose sight of the big picture. They often settle on less healthy foods because, for instance, the hot dog they feed their son every night has some protein, the ice cream has some calcium and the Gatorade has some electrolytes. The result: These children usually have a very limited diet of less-than-healthy foods and a parent who is constantly worried about nutrients.

HUNGER AVOIDERS

The profile: Hunger avoiders are parents who are uncomfortable letting their children be hungry, ever. They give their kids the foods they like at all times. These parents often are afraid their child will be underweight and will not develop properly. The result: Hunger avoiders usually

raise kids who eat a monotonous diet of a few favorite foods, kids who snack too much and kids who use their hunger to get their parents’ attention. It can cue overeating.

COMFORTERS/REWARDERS

The profile: Comforters use food to stop their child from having uncomfortable feelings, such as pain from a skinned knee or disappointment from a bad grade. Rewarders are similar to comforters, but instead of masking uncomfortable feelings with treats, rewarders dole out sugar to celebrate every success and happy moment. The result: Treating feelings (bad or good) with food can lead to emotional eating and overeating. Children learn that feeling upset is the same as feeling hungry when we’d rather teach them how to deal with those uncomfortable emotions through communication, self-care or even a hug. What can parents do? Rose said the key to changing eating habits is to start with a conversation that recognizes the feelings of the child. Then you can address the specific issues that need to change and make a plan with your child.

U.S. SPACE AND ROCKET CENTER, HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA

The largest choice of camps, subject matter, age groups and dates is in the cool mountains of northern Alabama. The center in Huntsville, also known as Rocket City, is the only NASA center where both day camps and overnight camps are offered, some of them throughout the year. While all space camps study all aspects of space exploration, Huntsville offers tighter focus with specific camps on aviation, robotics, space or mathematics. For example, the Mach I Aviation Camp for ages 9-11 starts with the basics of the military lifestyle. Trainees learn shelter building and food procurement, survival tactics and water-survival skills with hands-on activities in an on-site manmade lake that is treated to swimming pool standards. The Family Space Camp adventure is three days, two nights for ages 7 and up. You’ll launch simulated missions to the International Space Station, train like an astronaut on the Multi-Axis Trainer, construct and launch your own model rocket, and learn about the past, present and future of space exploration.

SPACE CENTER HOUSTON, TEXAS

Like Kennedy Space Center, Space Center Houston offers only day camps, but for South Florida families who want make a Texas vacation out of it, there are some important advantages. Groups start younger, as early as ages 4-5. A week-long Space Center University program is offered for ages 11-14 and 15-18. Classroom and hands-on sessions focus on robotics, rocketry, thermal protection systems and space habitats. Day camp sessions are 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., but parents can extend their days by purchasing before-care starting at 7

Age requirement may also be based on grade level completed or currently enrolled. Both day camp and sleep-in camps are offered at Huntsville; Kennedy Space Center and Houston have day camps only. ho doesn’t love a handmade card and an armful of roses? I sure do. Mother’s Day is the one day of the year when moms get their own holiday. It’s a day that represents love, thankfulness and an overall appreciation for every time we’ve gone above and beyond, sometimes surpassing what we think we can do. Mother’s Day looks different for each mom out there but the meaning behind the day remains universal among us: Moms are amazing. So what type of mom are you, and what gifts might fit you best?

FOR THE ‘SPA MOM’

Most spas offer some sort of discounted package for Mother’s Day. Don’t see one listed on their website? No problem. Pick up the phone and call to check. Many spa managers are happy to accommodate all types of budgets, especially when mom is the receiver.

FOR THE ‘SPORTY MOM’

Take her to your local running store to have her feet professionally measured and analyzed so that she is sure to get the right kind of sneakers for the right kind of workout. This is something that moms don’t feel like they have the time to do, but secretly want to do because their feet are oh so achy. A cute workout outfit can’t hurt either. There’s nothing like heading to your favorite Barre class in your new spandex leggings and tank top.

FOR THE ‘SIMPLISTIC MOM’

When she wakes up in the morning, eat breakfast together as a family and tell her you have a few things planned for her. You could even take it a step further and turn it into a scavenger hunt. Give her one note that says, “Your first clue is waiting for you where you brew your coffee each morning.” The ideas are endless. This type of day serves more than one purpose. First, it lets her know that you’re thinking about her. Second, it lets her know that she matters. Third, it’s fun. And who doesn’t need a little fun in their lives?

FOR THE ‘TIRED MOM’

I think we’re all a little tired these days, but you know the moms I’m talking about. These moms have a lot of kids, or have recently had a baby and don’t sleep much at night. These moms need a break, so give her exactly that. Let her have the whole house to herself. You take the kid(s) and leave. the. house. When moms are tired, the last thing they want to do is think about getting ready and going somewhere. Trust me, I dreamt about this very thing when I had my very first baby. Best. Gift. Ever.

FOR THE ‘NEW MOM’

Yay! This mom just had her first baby and is still glowing from the crazy hormones. These moms are the easiest to please, because they’re so overwhelmed by their new precious bambino that nothing can burst their bubble. Get her a cute necklace with the baby’s name and birth-

Whether this is your first pregnancy or fifth, being pregnant takes Mother’s Day to a whole new level. You are hormonal, tired, possibly overwhelmed and might not really know what you want. That’s OK. Pregnant moms always enjoy a date with their partners. Schedule a night out and enjoy each other’s company. If you have other kids at home, get a babysitter or ask grandma and grandpa to watch them for a few hours. She will love the fact that she can sneak in some alone time with you before the new baby arrives.

FOR THE ‘ROMANTIC MOM’

I think we all secretly want some sort of romance in our lives. This mom likes the dozen red roses, heartfelt card and chocolates in a foil-wrapped heart-shaped box. You might even throw in a few balloons and a stuffed teddy bear that says “I love you.” Spend the extra few dollars and take her out to dinner. You don’t have to bust the budget, but think outside of the box, and if going out to eat is not in the finances, have a picnic inside on your living room floor. Now that’s romantic. Moms, you might want to leave this article somewhere where your loved ones might notice it (wink, wink). A little help in the idea department never hurt anyone. Mother’s Day is May 13th, so take the opportunity to acknowledge moms for the amazing people they are.

inco de Mayo is a day set aside to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the French in 1862. On May 5, Mexicans celebrate with parties, parades and other festivities. Even if you don’t have a Hispanic heritage, you can party up with these fun crafts for kids.

MAKE A SOMBRERO

The sombrero is a wide-brimmed Mexican hat that comes in many designs, patterns, textures and colors. Materials: Plain newsprint or newspaper Paint Masking tape Scissors Hole punch Yarn 1. Stack 5 sheets of newspaper. 2. Have an adult center newspaper over child’s head. Wrap masking tape three times around the newspaper at the crown of the head. 3. Place sombrero on table and trim the brim of the hat into the shape of a large circle. 32

4. Roll outer edges of brim upward and secure with masking tape. 5. Paint hat. Let dry. 6. Punch holes around the outer brim, just inside the masking tape border. 7. Wrap tape around one end of a long piece of string. Lace string through holes and around the outer brim to create decorative stitching.

DAZZLING DAHLIAS

Dahlias, large flowers native to Mexico, are the country’s national flower. Materials: Brightly-colored tissue paper Pipe cleaners Scissors Ruler 1. Cut paper into squares measuring 8-by-8 inches. 2. Stack 12 pieces of paper. Make accordion pleats that are about ¾ -inch wide. 3. Wrap one end of the pipe cleaner around the center of the accordion pleated paper. Twist to secure in place. 4. Carefully separate paper layers, pulling them up toward the center.

MEXICAN MARACAS

Materials: Empty water bottle with lid Masking tape Markers Wide-mouth funnel Dried beans 1. Wrap the entire water bottle, except opening, with masking tape. 2. Use markers to create a colorful design. 3. Place funnel inside bottle opening. Fill bottle 1⁄3 full with dried beans. Secure with lid.

MARIACHI GUITAR

Materials: Shoe box with lid Markers Large rubber bands Scissors Empty paper towel roll Pencil Masking tape 1. Remove lid from box. Draw and cut an oval shape in the center of the lid to create the guitar opening.

TUNING INTO MARIACHI

2. Place five rubber bands around the lid that stretch across the hole. 3. On the left side of the hole, secure a pencil under the rubber bands. 4. On the right side of the box, cut a round hole the size of the paper towel roll. 5. Insert paper towel roll into the hole to create the neck. Secure with tape. 6. Place box lid over the box. (Rubber bands can be adjusted to wrap box, if preferred.) Secure lid with masking tape. 7. Decorate “guitar” with markers, paint, stickers or other embellishments.

FLOUR TORTILLAS

Ingredients: Flour, 2 cups Salt, ¾teaspoon Butter, 4 tablespoons Warm water, ½cup Measuring cups Mixing bowl Waxed paper Rolling pin Griddle 1. Mix flour and salt. Cut in butter. Add water, mix and shape into a ball. Divide into 8 balls. Set aside 30 minutes.

2. Place one ball of dough between two pieces of waxed paper and roll into a flat circle. 3. Place onto griddle. When slightly brown, flip to other side. 4. Fill with cheese, eggs, meat, sugar and cinnamon or any other favorite filler.

Mariachi music is the most wellknown genre of Mexican folk music and is one of the most familiar traditions of Cinco de Mayo. Mariachi music has a distinct sound, and band members wear ornate costumes that have come to symbolize Mexico. The mariachi ensemble generally consists of four or five people who sing and play a five-stringed, highpitched acoustic guitar; a large acoustic bass guitar; violins; and at least one trumpet. Mariachi is perfect for festive occasions because of its upbeat tempo and vibrant sounds. Because of this, it is often heard at Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Mexican weddings, parties and some restaurants. Even Americans know the two most popular mariachi songs, “La Cucaracha” and the “Jarabe Tapatío” or “Mexican Hat Dance.”

DEVELOP A SCHEDULE WITH THE CHILD

Set a firm bedtime with a predictable sequence of activities, Cancellier says. Involve the child in developing the schedule (to increase buy-in) and post it on the wall, specifying how many stories, songs, hugs and kisses will be included.

USE VISUAL AND VERBAL CUES

Choose a phrase that everyone will use to reinforce the bedtime, such as “Our rule is that people are in bed by 7:30 for the night,” and be consistent with it. Talk about the routine at other times during the day, pointing to the schedule

in the morning and recalling the one book you read and discussed the night before. That will reinforce the structure and expectations, Cancellier says.

BUT BE PATIENT

Plan for it to take at least two weeks for the new routine to really take hold, Cancellier says. In that time, everyone involved in the bedtime rituals should be at home each night and be working on establishing the new system.

THEN STICK TO IT

If your child tries to push the boundaries, be kind but firm. “Have a smile on your face and say, ‘What’s our rule?’ ” Cancellier says, adding that parents should hold their hand up in a non-accusatory way, with their palm open, and direct the child back to bed. Repeat as needed. Resist the tendency to get angry or show irritation with your child’s efforts to extend bedtime, because that will only prolong things. “It’s harder for them to argue when you smile and just say it,” she says. “We get in this habit of nagging them when they’re not doing what they’re supposed to do, and that’s a surefire guarantee of them not doing what we want.”

But by now, there’s still a few more months of school and your children are telling you they want something else to eat in their lunchbox. Need inspiration? We’ve got 55 easy ideas here: 1. Make your own “Lunchables”: Whole wheat crackers, sliced cheese, piece of meat. 2. Bagel and cream cheese. 3. Mini pizza: English muffin, pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni. 4. Banana slices and peanut butter with a handful of popcorn. 5. Ants on a log: Celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins sprinkled on top. 6. Take it a step further and plan all of your child’s lunches one month at a time. This can be a dry-erase calendar or something you type up on the computer and print out. Get your kids involved in the fun to make your children’s lunches something that they will look forward to eating.

Not deleting Facebook? Here’s how you can protect your kids’ data online

t becomes almost routine: Snap a picture of the kids, crop and edit it, share it on Facebook. Repeat. Posting pictures of kids on social media has become a fixture of modern parenting. Helicopter parents, freerange parents, even soon-to-be parents are sharing everything online. While our connected culture makes it easier to stay close to friends and family, it also makes it easier for data thieves and predators to take advantage of our well-intentioned efforts to nurture our relationships and grow our social networks. We must ask: Is it just our friends applauding our kids’ efforts in the crusade to end gun violence, or are nameless people sitting at far-away computers creating profiles of our social justice warriors? Are these same data thieves taking note of how old our kids are, and will they pay attention to our child’s favorite places to visit? For many of us, these questions are both perplexing and sobering. We’ve 58

been so focused over the past few months wondering if own online data is safe, but have we put our kids at risk? Luckily, our research shows that there are a few simple steps you can take to protect your children’s privacy online. These tips won’t fully keep your family safe from predators and data thieves, as unfortunately, there isn’t a vaccine for that just yet. However, they can give your kids a bit of protection as you continue to stay connected online. Double- and triple-check your privacy settings. Double check that you know the audience of each of your posts. You can share pictures with everyone, with your friends and their friends, with just your friends, or even with a smaller group of close friends. It’s also wise to see which apps have access to your information. You can easily limit this by reviewing your privacy settings on both the app and desktop site of Facebook. Avoid posting your child’s full name on Facebook and think twice before sharing their birth date. We all like to post a caption when we share

pictures on social media. It helps our friends and family appreciate where the picture was taken, or what was going through our mind in the moment we’re capturing. Wishing our children happy birthday online is a sweet gesture a nice reminder for uncle to call them, but is it worth giving away the most important identifying information? Unfortunately, this shares identifying information about our kids with people who might wish to do them harm. In their paper “Children Seen But Not Heard: When Parents Compromise Children’s Online Privacy,” researchers at New York University were able to identify names and birthdays for children on a parent’s Facebook page by applying age detection software programs to a parent’s public Facebook pictures. “We find that for a large number of parents, one can learn the names and faces of their children; for many children, one can learn their birth dates. By linking this information with publicly available data, one can obtain even more vivid profiles of young children,” the

study reported. When this information is paired with other publicly available information, the researchers found that one could obtain the child’s addresses and even the parent’s political affiliations. Don’t post naked pictures of your kids. Bath time photos are super cute. But there is also an underground network thriving on your willingness to share these adorable yet sometimes overly personally snapshots.
