Turtle nesting season has begun on South Florida beaches, giving late-night beachgoers a chance to see the circle of life in motion. Broward County has several programs designed to educate participants about sea turtles and help them witness turtle nesting firsthand. Spaces fill quickly, so make reservations as soon as possible. JUNGLE ISLAND REOPENS WITH NEW WATER ELEMENTS
Jungle Island in Miami, which had been closed since Hurricane Irma, reopened under new management on Memorial Day weekend with a host of new elements. Featured prominently on the website (jungleisland.com) is the new Aerodium attraction, an outdoor skydiving simulator similar to iFly, which was expected to be available to guests during the grand reopening. Also, Jungle Island is implementing water elements throughout the park, making it a “Miami Zoo meets Volcano Bay” experience, said guests relations representative Geoffrey Holmes. Among other planned features, which Holmes said should open later in the summer, are an indoor trampoline park, an aerial ropes course called Tree Top Trek, a beach restaurant and a new playground complete with tree houses. Frost Science Museum prepares for toxic takeover with 'Poison' exhibit BY JENNIFER JHON Discover the power of poison at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, which concluded its one-year anniversary events with a new exhibit opening on May 26. “The Power of Poison: From the Depths of The Sea to Your Own Backyard” explores the powerful defenses and healing that poisons can offer. For the first time, according to a news release, the museum has extended an exhibit to other parts of the museum. The “toxic takeover” will include milkweed and monarch butterflies on the rooftop terraces, lionfish and scorpionfish in the aquarium, poison dart frogs and venomous snakes.
The exhibit explores poison and venom in nature, myth and popular culture (such as Harry Potter), as well as its use in forensic science and in life-saving drugs. The “Poison by Accident” feature will allow guests to follow the clues to determine which poison is affecting various victims. “Power of Poison” will be in the Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery on the first floor of the museum through Sept. 3. The exhibit is included with museum admission. The Frost Science Museum is open daily 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at 1101 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Turtle walks begin in Palm Beach County BY JENNIFER JHON Turtle nesting season has begun on South Florida beaches, giving latenight beachgoers a chance to see the circle of life in motion. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s turtle walks begin Thursday and run on select Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights through July 12. The walks start at 8:30 p.m. with a classroom presentation on sea turtles, followed by a walk along the beach. The evening’s program will end at midnight or after a nesting loggerhead turtle is observed, whichever comes first. Children must be at least 8 for turtle walks, and minors younger than 18 must attend with an adult. See the next stage of the cycle starting July 16 with Gumbo Limbo’s Hatchling Release Program. All ages are welcome at this fun program, which begins in the classroom, followed by a
trip to the beach to watch Gumbo Limbo staff release baby sea turtles into the ocean. The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is at 1801 N. Ocean Blvd. in Boca Raton. Mosquitoes’ new threat? Yellow fever Outbreaks abroad could bring disease to South Florida BY LARRY BARSZEWSKI
T
he Zika scare of 2016 could morph into a yellow fever panic this year if South Florida residents let down their guard when it comes to protecting themselves from disease-carrying mosquitoes. There hasn’t been a yellow fever outbreak in the United States in more than 100 years, but state health officials are concerned that a large outbreak in Brazil — and other outbreaks in South and Central America — could lead to infected travelers bringing the disease to South Florida, which has the right mosquitoes and climate for it to spread. The disease is deadlier than the Zika virus. Zika raised alarms because many infected pregnant women gave birth to infants having microcephaly, a condition that causes abnormally small heads and developmental defects. Yellow fever can kill. Brazil reported 1,131 cases and 338 deaths attributable to yellow fever between July and March. Most people infected with yellow fever will get symptoms so minor they won’t realize they have been infected. Even for those who do notice, the symptoms such as fever, chills and headaches don’t make it stand out from many other illnesses. But for about 15 percent of the infected, the initial symptoms pass and then come back with a vengeance within a day, causing internal bleeding and jaundice — the yellowing of the skin that gives the fever its name — and the failure of the liver and other organs. Of those, up to half die, usually within a week or two.
REDUCING THE THREAT
The Centers for Disease Control in March warned travelers not to go to yellow fever hotspots in Brazil unless they have been vaccinated. South Florida officials are hopeful that the stepped-up mosquito control efforts already underway here to curb Zika will help contain any potential yellow fever outbreak. Yellow fever and Zika are carried by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito, which can also transmit dengue and chikungunya. “If yellow fever is introduced into

South Florida, and I suppose it will be, you’re not going to see the same explosive outbreak we did with Zika,” said Justin Stoler, an assistant professor of geography at the University of Miami who has done global health research with a focus on mosquito-borne illnesses. “There hasn’t been prior exposure, but we’ve kept mosquito populations down, which is a good thing.” Broward County began its first truck spraying of the year April 30 to kill infant mosquitoes that are expected to multiply as the region’s heavy rains increase, said Anh Ton, who oversees Broward’s mosquito control efforts. South Florida’s rainy season runs from May 15 to Oct. 15, according to the National Weather Service. The truck spraying is designed to kill mosquito larva in standing water, as opposed to aerial spraying that targets adult mosquitoes. The Aedes aegypti doesn’t travel far from where it is bred. The mosquito, one of more than 40 types in South Florida, gravitates to urban areas and can breed in as little as a bottle cap full of standing water. It bites during the daytime and not just at dusk and dawn, officials said.

Yellow fever is a rare disease in the United States, with only one reported case between 2004 and 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
WHAT IS YELLOW FEVER? SYMPTOMS ■ Most people infected with yellow fever virus have no illness or only mild illness. ■ Symptoms, which usually take three to six days to appear, include the sudden onset of fever, chills, a severe headache, back pain, general body aches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and weakness. ■ About 15 percent of cases are more severe. After a brief remission of up to a day, these individuals can experience high fevers, jaundice, internal bleeding and eventually shock and multiple organ failure. TREATMENT ■ There is no specific treatment. Rest, fluids and use of pain relievers and other medications to reduce fever may relieve some symptoms. Hospitalization is recommended to provide supportive care and observation. ■ Certain medications should be avoided. Those include aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen, which could increase the risk of bleeding. ■ Patients should avoid mosquito exposure for up to five days after the onset of fever to avoid spreading the disease to uninfected mosquitoes. Pure Bliss: Kids aqua park, go-carts enchant young cruisers BY RICHARD TRIBOU AND JENNIFER JHON
N
orwegian Bliss isn’t a new class of ship, but it feels like one. A lot of that has to do with the go-carts racing around the top deck track — the signature attraction on the 167,800-ton vessel, the third ship in Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Plus class. While Norwegian Bliss made a pit stop in Miami in May on its way to a summer of Alaska sailings, the ship will make Miami home again in November. In preparation for its return for a season of Caribbean sailings, here are 10 things that set it apart.
1. THE GO-CARTS
This is actually the second ship on which Norwegian provided a go-cart track, but the first, Norwegian Joy, spends all its time halfway around the world sailing in China and Australia. Plus, the Bliss track is 40 percent bigger, at nearly 1,000 feet across two decks, and thus better. Is it really a draw? This track is intense, with 15 turns. The go-carts go up to 30 mph, and even let riders push an acceleration button like a dose of Nitro in a “Fast & Furious” movie. It’s an added cost, but only $7, and riders get eight laps racing up to nine other riders at a time. It’s not for lightweights, and passing isn’t the easiest. Other drivers can cut you off while trying to pass on the inside, and then the staff push a magic button that slows everyone’s go-carts in order to disentangle the little road-rage incidents. In the end, there’s more speed thrills than not, and riders get to see how they fared on the leaderboard after the race. For adrenaline fans, this fits the bill.
2. LASER TAG
Another new top-deck feature on the ship is this alien-lab-themed team experience. The $5 per person game gets wouldbe shooters five minutes with a space rifle in on either the scientist or marine teams, darting around like something out of the movie “Aliens” blasting people into virtual oblivion. The guns are pretty fun with more than just triggers, such as button combinations that should please 18

anyone who ever played on a Nintendo game system. It’s open-air, so it can be a workout in the daytime, so best to make time for a pool or water-slide cool down afterward.

3. THE KIDS PROGRAMS
The cruise line touts the ship’s design as one to take in expansive views for both its two main destinations: Alaska and the Caribbean. The massive Observation Lounge wraps around 180 degrees of the ship with hundreds of relaxing seating options to take in the views through the floor-to-ceiling glass. It’s a gem for the views, especially considering the cooler temperatures guests will experience on the deck in Alaska, but also for the serenity one can find. It encompasses 3,500 square feet, so there’s usually a cozy spot to find some privacy. One can even get light breakfast in the lounge, including bloody Marys for those who need it from the lounge bar.
The Splash Academy for ages 3-12, Guppies playroom and Entourage teen space are designed to entertain young ones, and the concept works so well that you might find yourself competing with venues for a little of your kids’ time. The Guppies playroom has open play and sensory-play activities for babies under 3 and their parents. Entourage for ages 13-17 is next to the ship’s arcade and includes gaming stations, foosball, air hockey and a neon-lit dance floor to host the teen nightclub’s theme nights. Splash Academy’s fully supervised programming for children and preteens is free until 10 p.m. when the ship is at sea, and the facility includes an interactive video room, full-sized movie room and a huge open-play room. Parents can pay an extra fee for late-night care at Splash Academy until 1:30 a.m. This feature is especially important on the Bliss, which does not have any child-friendly stage shows. The Q stands for barbecue. Diners will find wagon wheel lighting fixtures that fit right in with the brisket, ribs and chicken accompanied by live country music on stage. The food is top-notch, what cruise line execs promised to be an elevated
barbecue experience. Even so, diners will get their hands dirty, but the meat is fall-off-the-bone succulent. There are four sauces, including a smoky barbecue, that will test stomach capacity limits, especially when trying to squeeze in appetizers and side items like the deviled eggs with maple-cured bacon and jalapeno cheddar grits. Diners should leave room for dessert like banana pudding and peach cobbler. In the end, the meal is outstanding, music entertaining and experience memorable. Just be prepared to loosen your belt.
6. THE WATER SLIDES AND KIDS AQUA PARK
The ship has only two slides as opposed to the four on sister ship Norwegian Escape, but one of Bliss’ offerings, the Ocean Loops, is a welcome addition to the scream-inducing set. This one launches riders down a tube through a set of bombbay doors for an eight-second figure-eight ride over the side of the hull that gets the heart racing. It’s a blast. However: a word of caution. The minimum weight for riders is 99 pounds, but several riders on the smaller side didn’t have enough propulsion to make it around the last loop and ended up sliding backward in the tube; they had to be extricated through a trap door. Those weighing more than 150 pounds, but no more than 300 pounds, will have an easier time. The second slide, the Aqua Racer, is a tube ride that allows for single and double riders, so parents and children can ride together. It’s pretty tame in comparison, but for someone who accidentally goes down backward, the lack of knowing what’s coming, including passing through the giant clear tube that’s hanging out over the ship’s edge, caused at least one rider to yell, “Holy Moly!” Children are more likely to spend their time in the Kids Aqua Park one deck below the Aqua Racer. The park has splash pads and water tables, water cannons, tipping buckets, bridges and slides. The park felt great in the Florida sun, but if you get cold, you can warm up in a pool-deck shower, all of which are outfitted with super-sized rain shower heads that stream hot water.
7. THE RESERVATION SCREENS
The touch screens located throughout the ship allow cruisers to make reservations for the Go-Karts, Laser Tag, shows and dining without waiting in line at the guest services counter. The screens also allow cruisers to explore the ship and all of its facets at their leisure, get more

details on the entertainment available and check out all of the daily activity options.
8. WYLAND
Norwegian ships are among the most striking at sea, and that’s because of the signature artwork on the hulls. The humpback whales and other sea life created by artist Wyland make Norwegian Bliss stand out. Originally touted as a specialty ship for Alaska, the artwork is still apropos for sailing among glaciers as well as sailing to islands filled with palm trees. Plus you can enjoy Wyland TV in the stateroom for a dose of painting tips and happy sunsets.
9. COCO’S
Chocolate and ice cream lovers are in for a treat. Milkshakes and sundaes topped with candy treats, handmade chocolates, and fruit with a chocolate fountain are on the menu at Coco’s, which is located mid-ship near the atrium. Other sweet fixes, if the ice cream machine in the Garden Cafe doesn’t satisfy, are served at Dolce Gelato on the Waterfront on Deck 8, and the adjacent Bake Shop, which serves macarons, truffles and cupcakes of various sizes at its indoor counter.
10. THE REST
The ship has a few other new features, including a dining venue called The Local that’s like a neighborhood grill, which is a welcome complimentary dining alternative, and a full-size Starbucks. Bliss also has another version of the Cavern Club, which is inspired by the Liverpool club where The Beatles played in the 1960s. One of the ship’s best specialty dining additions is Mexican option Los Lobos , which features fresh guacamole made tableside and a tres leches that’s a must for dessert fans. And back on board are the Food Republic fusion dining option
and microbrew-centric District Brew House, which both made debuts on Norwegian Escape. While the newer venues may upstage the rest, the ship is filled with mainstays found on several other ships in the fleet, including a giant casino and Mandara Spa. There’s a bar for nearly every drink type, including The Cellars wine bar, Sugarcane Mojito Bar and Maltings Whiskey Bar. Specialty dining options include Cagney’s steakhouse, La Cucina Italian dining, Le Bistro French cuisine, Ocean Blue seafood, Japanese hibachi steakhouse Teppanyaki and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea. Many of these offer both indoor and outdoor waterfront seating. Bliss is among the largest in the fleet along with the other Breakaway Plus class ships, with a 4,004-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. Cabins include The Haven’s 80 suites, which is the line’s exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept with its own restaurant, outdoor terrace, private lounge and pool courtyard. The rest of the ship features 308 mini suites, 1,088 balcony staterooms, 374 inside staterooms and 82 studio staterooms designed for solo travelers. FAMILY TRAVEL TIPS It takes a day or two to get used to the layout of the ship. Quiz your children throughout the day on the location of their rooms, kids club, pool and other locales to help them learn the ship layout. Get your kids a waterproof watch with a light-up display so they can responsibly track their time on the ship, especially if they don’t have phones or you don’t want them using their phones on the ship. There are few clocks apparent on the ship, even in staterooms. Light-up watches can not only tell you the time in a dark room but also provide a sense of security for younger ones afraid of the dark.

ummer has finally arrived, giving South Florida families time to explore the incredible region they call home. Looking for adventures to fill your family’s summer days? There is plenty nearby to keep your kids entertained. Airboat rides. Get up close and personal with the abundant wildlife of the Everglades, including alligators, birds, fish, turtles and more. Some airboat tour operators, such as the Everglades Holiday Park (home of the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue), Sawgrass Recreation Park and Tigertail Airboat Tours, also have native wildlife and alligator shows. Beaches. Head east from almost anywhere in South Florida to find sun, surf and sand. Fishing piers up and down the coast give beachgoers great access to saltwater fishing and gorgeous views of the sunrise. Carousels. The Carousel at Pompano Citi Centre in Pompano Beach includes five Florida-inspired creatures as well as a host of others, and the all-Floridathemed Carousel at Downtown in the 26

Gardens features a great blue heron, Florida panther, roseate spoonbill and other state-specific rides. Families can also find carousels at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, the Palm Beach Zoo and Lion Country Safari. Dolphin Encounter at Miami Seaquarium. Once an experience only seen in the movies, the Seaquarium’s Dolphin Encounter allows guest to meet and communicate with a dolphin in a controlled, fun environment. Guests as young as 5 can get in the pool with a dolphin and touch their fins, pose for pictures and try some hand commands. Everglades National Park. Check out the ranger-led programs, from nature walks to Everglades Exploration talks. Visitors can bike the 14-mile trail at Shark Valley or take a 2-hour narrated tram tour to see alligators, wading birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Younger visitors can complete a free, interactive program to earn a Junior Ranger badge. Frost Museum of Science and Planetarium. Little can compare with the 1-year-old Phillip and Patricia Frost Mu-
seum of Science in downtown Miami. With a huge 500,000-gallon aquarium that spans several stories, a MeLab for creative exploration, touch tanks, interactive touch screens, a planetarium, the Feathers to the Stars exhibit and traveling exhibits, the Frost can easily keep families entertained for a full day. Gardens. Flamingo Gardens in Davie and Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach give residents the chance to dive into nature. Flamingo Gardens has 60 acres of botanical gardens with more than 3000 species of plants and trees and a wildlife sanctuary that is home to alligators, bobcats, eagles, otters, panthers, peacocks and its namesake flamingos. Morikami Museum has a tea house, a bonsai collection and six distinct Japanese gardens. The Morikami is known for several events, including its Sushi and Stroll summer walks, the Lantern Festival in October, its Family Fun Days craft workshops and tea ceremonies. Hollywood’s Broadwalk. Enjoy the beach life, plus restaurants, water sports,
entertainment and the new Margaritaville Resort along the Hollywood Broadwalk. Families can rent pedal-powered surreys to explore the Broadwalk, enjoy playgrounds steps away from the ocean and listen to live music at the bandshell. Indoor Skydiving at iFly. Ages 3 to 103 can get the sensation of free falling without having to jump out of a plane. iFly instructors walk new flyers through a safety demonstration, help them get suited up in flight gear, then assist them in experiencing the thrill of flight inside a giant wind tunnel. Kids are especially adept at maneuvering inside the air tunnel, and with the help of the teacher, they can be flipping and flying in no time. iFly has a number of different packages for new and returning fliers, and some options include photos and videos that are ideal for social media sharing. Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlour. This Hollywood institution serves up homemade ice cream in fabulous creations both curbside and inside its license-plate covered restaurant. Diners can order everything from cones and sundaes to the giant Kitchen Sink, which is served to a minimum of four guests and is priced per person, so it grows with the size of your table. The small store at the front of the restaurant offers a trip down memory lane with vintage candies and toys Key Largo. The wonder of the Florida Keys start just south of Miami, and the northernmost Key Largo is a great place to introduce your family to the abundant sealife just off the shore. Tours out of John Pennekamp State Park are a great way to introduce your kids to the fun of snorkeling in a supervised and supported environment. Lion Country Safari. Florida's only drive-through safari and walk-through amusement park allows visitors to get an up-close encounter with more than 1,000 animals. Guests can drive through the safari, which is spread out across seven sections, and snap photos of the lions, antelopes, water buffalo, zebras, ostriches, giraffes and many other animals. After driving through, enjoy the walkthrough park, which features animal exhibits and shows, a petting zoo, a giraffe feeding station, bird feedings, a water play park and water slides, paddle boats, mini golf, a giant slide and more — all included in admission. Museums. There’s no better place for summer fun than one of the many childfriendly museums in South Florida. Miami has the Miami Children’s Museum and the new Frost Museum of Science, Broward has the Museum of Science

and Discovery — with its new outdoor science park — and the Young at Art Museum, plus the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach. Nature Centers. Learn about South Florida’s environment and the wildlife in it at the many nature centers in the region, including the Environmental Center at Miami Dade College in Kendall, the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Dania Beach and Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton. Managing Your Child’s Type 2 Diabetes By Kelly J. Seiler, MD
A
child with diabetes can live an active, healthy life by keeping this chronic disease under control. That may mean taking insulin shots or oral medications to control the level
of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. Maintaining normal weight, eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise are
also very important for reducing the risk of diabetes-related problems and promoting your child’s long-term physical health. The American Diabetes Association estimates that 193,000 children and teenagers in the U.S. have diagnosed diabetes. A small percentage have type 1 diabetes, where the immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin – a condition that can’t be prevented. However, children and parents can take steps to manage type 2 diabetes, in which the pancreas is healthy but the body doesn’t respond to the insulin it produces. Controlling type 2 diabetes is important for many reasons. When type 2 diabetes is not diagnosed or treated effectively, the rapidly changing levels of glucose in the blood can put chronic stress on the body’s organs and tissues. The complications of untreated diabetes can include coronary artery disease, blindness, chronic pain, slow-healing wounds and depression. If your child has diabetes, a pediatric endocrinologist can prepare a treatment program designed to maintain healthy blood-sugar levels through insulin or other medications. Regular checkups are important because insulin production and effectiveness can change as your child grows and develops. An older child might also benefit from a mobile device and application that makes it easy to monitor glucose levels throughout the day. Your child’s endocrinologist will also work closely with other members of the pediatric care team to help your child maintain good physical and emotional health. For example, counseling may help a child who is not doing well in school because she feels “different” from her friends because of diabetes.
Tips for parents Whether your child has type 2 diabetes or is at risk for the disease, the following steps can help promote better health: ! Prepare and serve healthy meals. Eating low-fat foods that are rich in nutrition can help in preventing weight gains that lead to obesity. Whole-grain cereals and breads, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins are some examples of healthy foods. ! Limit sugar intake. Eating fewer desserts (or smaller portions) can reduce upward spikes of glucose in the blood. Your child should also avoid sodas, juices, iced teas, coffee and energy drinks that have high levels of sugar. ! Increase physical activity. Increased activity helps the body maintain healthier blood sugars. Aim for one hour of physical activity on most days. Find a sport or a fitness pursuit, such as dancing, swimming or soccer that your child enjoys. Even walking the dog or mowing the lawn can help burn off some extra calories and promote a healthy weight. ! Set limits on the use of digital media, watching TV, playing videogames or sitting at the computer. This will allow more time for your child to be active. ! Take a creative approach. Turn devices and the TV off at dinner or set media-free rooms in the house such as in the bedroom. You could put your son’s computer on top of a high desk, so he has to stand up while doing homework or playing videogames. You could also turn the TV into a family fitness device and have everyone dancing around the living room! ! Lead by example. Children who observe their parents eating healthfully and participating in physical activity are more likely to model that behavior. Building these types of healthy lifestyle habits can make a big difference in preventing or managing your child’s type 2 diabetes. Your pediatrician or endocrinologist can be your partner in promoting a lifetime of good health for your child.

10 ways to keep kids reading and writing

ummer may be a break from school, but it’s no time for your children to take a break from written words. Keeping them tuned in to academics could pay off when school resumes in August. The following are creative ways to keep kids reading and writing all summer long.
IGNITE HIS INTEREST
One key to sparking children’s interests in reading is to find out what subjects and genres they enjoy. If your child likes videogames, get a book on programming. If sports or mysteries, find authors who specialize in those areas. Carry this over to writing by encouraging your child to create a new sport. What would the rules be? Or a new dinosaur breed—what would its name be, and what would it eat? If your child likes mysteries, suggest he write an alternative ending to a story he has just read.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Don’t assume your kids are motivated to read by themselves. Rally their interest by reading to them. Children like to hear about heroes older than they are, but those books may be above their reading level. If your child is old enough, read a few paragraphs, pages or a chapter, and then have him read to you.

discovering the author’s life, too. This will give your child insight on where story and character ideas originate, and how a character may take on the attributes of someone the author knew. Many authors have websites where kids can email questions and get responses. Some even have extension activities for their books.
NEWSPAPER NOVELTIES
Turn those books into box projects. After your child reads a book, encourage him to create a diorama of his favorite character’s room or a favorite scene from the story. He could also make an identity box filled with a character’s belongings; for example, what would Encyclopedia Brown put into his box? A larger box makes a great puppet stage. Have your child make simple puppets from various materials and create a box stage to reenact the story.
Reading the newspaper seems like such an adult thing to do, but with a little creativity, it can be a non-threatening experience. Give your preschooler a crayon and have him circle certain letters in headlines, such as all the “A’s.” If he knows the entire alphabet, he can circle all 26 letters in order. Your older child may enjoy cutting out five unrelated pictures and creating a story that somehow connects them all. Don’t forget to read articles that take in your child’s interests—sports, animals, etc.

Pick an author your child enjoys and have him read several of his books to compare and contrast themes and characters. Take this one step further by 30

As you do, stop at a cliffhanger and speculate about what is going to happen next. This keeps the family dialogue going and makes it a shared endeavor.
DISCOVERY DIARY
The writing process doesn’t have to be long to be fruitful, but it does need to be fun. At the start of summer, let your child purchase a journal to log summer discoveries. As you take trips to various places, such as museums or science centers, have him write about what he learned and include pictures he draws or takes with a camera. A discovery made while at the store or a new food he tried at the restaurant can be a journal entry too. By summer’s end, he will have logged a storehouse of new adventures.
WANNA PIGGYBACK?
One really popular type of poetry is called “Piggyback Poetry.” This is where the author has taken a well-known song or poem, such as “Take me out to the Ballgame” and translated it into something new such as, “Take me out of the Bathtub,” using the same rhythm and cadence. Have your child pick out a song or poem he enjoys and write his own
piggyback. Novel paper, pens and pencils may inspire him to embellish his work and create a keepsake.

ACTING ADVENTURES
Have your child write an adventure based on a book he’s just read and use the same characters. Or have him make up his own character, one where he is projected into the story. How will he conduct himself in the adventure? Then create a backyard theatre with friends or siblings and put on a production. Another idea is to do a spoof of a movie or TV show he is familiar with — something silly and fun. Bring out the video recorder so he can see the finished project.
TAP INTO TRIPS
If you’re going on vacation, have your child help plan the trip. Pick up a few travel books and let him research sites he would like to see. Also look for materials that talk about the destination’s history. Some places, such as Williamsburg, may even have fiction stories associated with them and would be a timely read. Staying local? Challenge your child to use a trip to a nearby theme park to

It’s the one day out of the year that is just for dads, and with the right kind of planning, it can be a day filled with memories. If money is an issue, have no fear. 10 tips for day camp

ons. 1. FILL ‘ER UP. Bring one bottle of water that has been cooled in the refrigerator and a second one that has been in the freezer. As the day wears on, the frozen water will melt and provide cool refreshment for your child. Spray bottles are a great idea, too. They keep the face and body cool in the hot sun. 2. IT’S A SCORCHER. Apply sunscreen to your child’s skin before he leaves home, and send the container along for re-application. Most camps don’t allow counselors to apply lotion to a child, so send a spray-on, and avoid sunscreen that contains glitter as it can reflect light and cause sunburn. Consider sending a hat with your camper for extra protection. 3. BUG OFF! If your child is going to be outside, he or she should wear insect repellent. Do not get a sunscreen and bug repellent combination, as sunscreen needs to be applied more often than repellent does. When camp is over, follow up with a tick check for safe keeping. 4. 10. GETTING TO KNOW YOU. Find out if there is an open house where you can meet the staff and see the facility before camp begins. If not, make other arrangements to introduce yourself to those who will be caring for your child. It is important for the camp directors and counselors to know you so they can keep you informed on how things are going for your child at camp. Finally, encourage your child to enjoy the experience. Mark the first day of camp on the family calendar and do a countdown. Help your child develop a checklist of items needed. And don’t forget to share your own camp stories. Remind your child to do his best, obey the rules, be respectful of others and have a great time.

Want a safe nursery? Here are the latest recommendations. BY ELISABETH LEAMY, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST

o create a safe nursery, what you leave out of your baby’s room may be more important than what you include. “Bare is best,” said Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “That means no pillows, blankets, extra padding or other soft bedding. Nearly half of the infant crib deaths . . . reported to CPSC each year are suffocations caused by placing infants to sleep on top of pillows, thick quilts and/or overcrowding in the baby’s sleeping space.” Getting the crib environment right is crucial, because babies spend so much time sleeping. Securing cords out of reach just isn’t good enough. Cordless blinds cost as little as $3 apiece, a worthwhile investment for your nursery - and elsewhere in your house. CORDS: Speaking of cords, make sure cords from baby monitors, lamps and other electronics are at least three feet from your child’s crib. It’s best if products with cords are placed near wall outlets, so the cords can be tucked away where crawling and walking babies can’t get at them either. FURNITURE: Tip-overs are the big risk here. Consumer Reports says furniture makers only have to comply with a voluntary standard and don’t even have to test to make sure their products won’t tip over. Consumer advocates are pushing for a federal standard to ensure furniture is more stable. Meanwhile, it’s crucial that you anchor top-heavy furniture in your child’s room - and elsewhere in your house - to your walls. That includes any piece of furniture taller than 30 inches and also television sets. Heavylidded toy chests are another hazard. At the very least, children can crush their
fingers under the lids, and at most, they can get trapped inside and suffocate. Choose an open-topped chest or take the lid off. CARPET: Look for carpeting, rugs and pads that emit low levels of volatile organic compounds. VOCs can cause eye, nose and throat irritation and headaches in the short term and nervous system damage and cancer in the long term. Greenguard, which is part of testing organization UL, certifies products that have low emissions. You can also look for the Carpet and Rug Institute’s “Green Label Plus.” PAINT: Here again, you don’t want your baby exposed to any more chemicals than absolutely necessary. All of the major paint brands offer low-VOC formulas. Greenguard certifies low-emission paints as does another organization called GreenSeal. It also helps to complete any paint jobs well before you bring your baby home, and leave windows open for ventilation. SMOKE DETECTORS: The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing one smoke detector inside every sleeping room in your home - including your baby’s nursery. You should also install a detector outside each sleeping area, such as in the hallway. Better yet, choose wireless interconnected smoke alarms. When one goes off, they all do. That way, if there’s a fire in, say, your basement, the detectors in your bedrooms will sound, giving you an earlier warning. Those are all of the current nursery safety recommendations, but as we learn more, standards change. To get updated information about product safety, you can sign up to receive CPSC emails about recalled infant and child products. “Your baby’s sleep environment should be the safest place in your home,” Buerkle said. “While many new parents are focused on making their nursery beautiful, all parents - new and experienced - should think about safety first.”

The important connection between risk-taking and confidence BY AMY JOYCE, THE WASHINGTON POST
C
laire Shipman and Katty Kay were often asked the same question when they spoke about their best-selling book, “The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance — What Women Should Know.” No matter where they were or what group they were in front of, they were invariably asked: “How can we help our daughters?” And so, it was natural for them to decide not only to write a book about girls, but also for them. “The Confidence Code for Girls” features cartoon illustrations, quizzes and many stories of girls who overcame obstacles and became more confident. We spoke to Shipman, a mother to a 16-year-old boy and a daughter who is about to turn 13, about what she and Kay found while researching the book, and what they hope girls (and, yes, boys) gain from it. This interview was edited for length 42

and clarity. Q: What was the impetus for this book? A: The “Confidence Code” we did for women did really well, and there was some research about when this confidence gap opened. It seems to start at puberty. We found as we were going out speaking, this issue of “what about our daughters” was really resonating. Q: Why write it for girls instead of parents? A: There are great parenting books out there. We were just intrigued with the idea of reaching the kids and trying to change their behavior and make it easier for them to change some habits. What we realized from our adult book is habit change is entirely possible with basic cognitive behavioral therapy. We worked with amazing therapists and experts to make this book, using quizzes, lists and stories.
Q: What do you hope the big takeaway will be? A: That failure is okay. Risk, failing, moving on is a part of achievement and success and part of happiness in life. Hopefully stemming from that, they get a greater sense of self. The other depressing thing is perfectionism. It keeps girls from forming their own identities. They feel like they have to be everything for everyone. Even though this book is for girls, implementing all of this will depend on parents, but also educators. I’m hoping kids will learn the lesson about failure and resilience. It’s just as important as all the academic stuff they can cram into their heads. Q: Girls’ confidence drops between ages 8 and 14. Why? A: Not surprisingly, it’s a mix of nature and nurture. It does seem that girls’ and boys’ brains develop a little differently. Girls, especially at puberty, start to
really have much higher emotional intelligence than boys. They did before, but this is the time they double down. It leads girls to be more cautious, and boys don’t have that. Boys get a big boost of testosterone, stuff that encourages risktaking. You build confidence by taking risks and struggling and failing and eventually mastering something. You need to be taking action to build confidence. But the system we’ve all set up is one that creates this army of young girl perfectionists. From preschool through college, it’s all about sitting still, coloring within the lines, doing more than expected, trying to please teacher. So they don’t take risks, fail, mess up. There’s this whole conversation about boys struggling academically. But that means in the real world they know what to do. They’re learning lessons about taking risks, so they’re more ready to try something. We were really struck by this idea of how is this happening with young women. They are outperforming boys academically. Then they enter the work world, and their confidence plummets. They’re just not learning it’s okay to take risks and fail. Q: Is this book also applicable to boys?

A: Nobody loves to fail. Risks can feel scary. What we’re talking about conversely is that boys are naturally doing this stuff, so it’s good to reinforce to boys, “You failed. What did you learn from it?” I talk about this with men a lot, too. They say, “I get nervous, too, or assume I will fail.” But they have those thoughts and worry, but they still act. Women often don’t. Q: How has this changed your own
