August marks the end of our families’ and our children’s summer vacation routines. It’s also full of opportunities for even the most amateur observer to take in some big skywatching happenings without the aid of a telescope. Shake up that routine and budget a late bedtime one night this August for one of the following sky events. Any of these simple observing targets could be an unforgettable memory for you and your child: Aug. 10 – The “Super Moon” While the “Super Moon” isn’t a huge sky event because full moon isn’t the best time to view the moon (it’s difficult to see any of its surface details during that time), it does garner lots of attention. Aug. 10 features the largest full moon of 2014, which occurs because this full moon happens at the same time the moon makes its closest approach to Earth on its elliptical orbit. Aug. 12 – The peak of the Perseids meteor shower A popular meteor shower each year, the Perseids will feature plenty of “shooting stars” the night of Aug. 12. Find your way to a spot away from city lights, look the opposite direction of the moon, and take in these stunning space rocks. Aug. 18 – Venus and Jupiter come together The two brightest planets — Venus and Jupiter —will make a spectacular pair before dawn in mid-August. Catch those two as they appear close together in the eastern sky, and then stay up for a beautiful sunrise 30 minutes later. Saturn and Mars will line up in a less impressive but still colorful union that you can view through binoculars during

PHOTO/MCT

August’s final two weeks. Closing out the month, on Aug. 31, a crescent moon joins the scene in the western evening sky. If none of these specific dates works for your family, there’s still plenty to look at in the moonless sky at the end of August. At this time of year, the band of our galaxy, the Milky Way, rides high overhead by 10 p.m. local time. Take your kids away from city lights for a spectacular view they won’t soon forget, and see if they can point out some of the most popular star patterns summer has to offer: the Northern Cross of the constellation Cygnus, the W of Cassiopeia, the Teapot of Sagittarius, or even the Summer Triangle, composed of some of the season’s brightest stars, Deneb, Vega and Altair. Free InfantSEE program gets eye care off to a good start By Maddy Mesa

Eye care is important, and at a young age, many eye problems can go undetected. But a free public health program, InfantSEE, can flag future issues now. InfantSEE was developed in 2005 to provide professional eye care for infants nationwide. “Basically, we rule out any problems that could happen in the eye that could affect the vision development of the child growing up,” said Dr. Cheryl Ebmeier, OD, of Envision Eyecare in Fort Lauderdale. Recommended for babies 6 to 12 months old, a general

InfantSEE assessment tests visual acuity (how well the eye sees), prescription status (nearsighted, farsighted or stigmatisms) and proper eye movement. InfantSEE also addresses eye alignment, binocular vision (the eyes working together) and eye health. Ebmeier, who has participated in InfantSEE for almost 10 years, said too often parents don’t know about the importance of eye health in their infants. “I think most parents, like for me as a parent, it wasn’t recommended to me,” Ebmeier said. “As a parent, it can be assumed that you take your kid in, and the

pediatrician can pick up on eye problems.” But that isn’t the case. During an InfantSEE eye exam, “I get down on the floor with the child, I check the pupils, I check everything,” Ebmeier said. “I check eye muscles and use a retina scope and make sure there is no large difference between the eyes.” She also looks inside the eye. “I look at the health and structure of the eye and make sure that there isn’t something that would prevent the eye from functioning properly.” Ebmeier encouraged par-

ents to take advantage of the program before their babies pass the 12-month mark. “The faster any vision problems are addressed, the faster they can be prevented,” she said. “It’s important people have routine eye care, and they can start with InfantSEE. It’s free, so there’s no downside.” To schedule a FREE InfantSEE appointment with a participating doctor, visit www.infantsee.org and search for location by zip code.

k: c u t s t e Don’t g Make sure By Bob LaMendola Florida Department of Health in Broward County

your student’s vaccinations are up to date

o time passes faster than summer vacation. That means it is never too early to think about back-to-school immunizations for the kids. The Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties have revved up their immunization campaigns to help parents who do not have their children vaccinated by their family doctors, which is the preferred way. Special events and expanded efforts are underway. “One of the most important things parents can do is to protect their children against diseases by having them fully immunized,” says Dr. Paula Thaqi, health officer of DOHBroward. “Vaccines have helped us wipe out diseases that used to kill our children by the thousand.” Public schools open Aug. 18. Florida law says children cannot start school unless they are up-to-date on six vaccinations that protect against nine contagious and potentially fatal childhood diseases (unless they have obtained an exemption from the DOH). Every year, parents and school officials get headaches when children cannot be admitted due to missing vaccinations.

South Florida has been successful in vaccinating children for school. State figures show that in Broward County, 93.6 percent of kindergarteners and 96.6 percent of seventh-graders were fully immunized last school year. Vaccination rates in Palm

To help, the DOH gives free immunizations paid for by the federal Vaccines for Children program: DOH-Broward – All recommended immunizations are offered at DOH health centers. In addition, a twoweek back-to-school event is set for Aug. 4-19 at Lauderhill Mall, 1267 NW 40th Ave. The highlight will be an outreach event and health fair at the mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. For details, visit www.browardchd.org/vaccinations.aspx or call 954-467-4705. DOH-Palm Beach – Immunizations are offered at DOH health centers and by a mobile van. For hours and locations, visit www.pbchd.com/imunz/immunization.html or call 561-840-4568. DOH-Miami-Dade – Immunizations are offered at DOH health centers. Back-to-school events are set for July 26 and Aug. 16. For hours and locations, visit www.dadehealth.org/immuniz/IMMUNIZintro.asp or call 786-845-0550.

Immunizations are especially important for children entering kindergarten and seventh grade, since different requirements kick in at those grade levels. DOH gives children all required vaccinations, including:

»

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – The DTaP vaccine given to babies and preschoolers in four to five doses protects against the three bacterial diseases. One additional dose, called Tdap, is given before seventh grade.

»

Polio – A vaccine given to babies and pre-schoolers in three to five doses protects against the virus. Polio can lead to paralysis and death, but the vaccine has eliminated it from the United States.

»

Measles, mumps, rubella (German measles) – The MMR vaccine given to babies and pre-schoolers in two doses protects against viruses that cause the three respiratory diseases.

»

Chickenpox – A vaccine given to babies and pre-schoolers in two doses protects against the varicella virus that causes chickenpox. One additional dose is given by the start of seventh grade. In adults, the virus can re-emerge and cause the painful skin condition called shingles.

»

Hepatitis B – A vaccine given to babies in three doses protects against the virus, which can cause liver damage, chronic disease, cancer or even death. Beach County were 92.4 percent and 97 percent, and in Miami-Dade County, 92 percent and 94.9 percent. However, DOH backto-school events may not provide all childhood immunizations recommended by federal health officials. Talk

to your family doctor about those vaccines. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) requires health insurers to cover all the recommended vaccines for free, although some doctors charge for an office visit to give vaccines.

SPONSORED BY MIAMI CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Straight Facts About Scoliosis By Dr. Harry Shufflebarger

Who Treats Scoliosis?

The spine has a natural “S” curve when viewed in profile and should appear straight when viewed from the back. If your child’s shoulders seem to be uneven or if the spine appears to curve to the left or right when viewed from the back, a condition called scoliosis may be present. Approximately 1 to 2 percent of children ages 9 to 14 are diagnosed with scoliosis. The disorder can result in back pain and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing, decreased height and reduced self-esteem. Anyone can be affected by scoliosis. However, the likelihood of developing scoliosis is somewhat greater among girls and among children whose parents or siblings have the condition.

Treatment of scoliosis in children is best coordinated by an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine treatment and surgery. Families in search of care should seek a consultation through a reputable program with extensive experience in treating scoliosis.

How is Scoliosis Diagnosed? The first step in diagnosis is a physical examination. Your child’s physician will check for uneven shoulders and protruding shoulder blades and examine the child’s spine while he or she leans forward. If scoliosis is suspected, an X-ray can assess the extent of the curvature.

Scoliosis and Growth Scoliosis tends to advance when a child goes through puberty and enters a period of rapid growth. Children with scoliosis often are taller than their peers at age 8 or 9, but as they mature, their height is more consistent with others of the same age.

Why is Treatment Important? In severe cases, a child with scoliosis may have difficulty breathing as the curving spine encroaches into the rib cage. In addition, affected children may suffer from self-esteem issues caused by the deformity.

Same dedicated team of board certified pediatric dentists and staff-new look!

How is Scoliosis Treated? Some children with mild scoliosis may not require treatment. In general, a treatment plan is developed based on the degree of the child’s spinal curvature. Children with mild curvatures (less than 25 degrees) may require only regular examinations to follow the progression of the disease. Children with spinal curves of 25 degrees to 40 degrees or those with curves of 20 degrees or more who are still growing may be prescribed treatment with a brace. The brace is designed to address the child’s individual needs and stop a curve from progressing. If the curve progresses to 45 degrees and has the potential to grow worse, spinal fusion surgery may be recommended. This procedure involves placing rods on either side of the spine to correct the curvature. Most children can resume normal activities, including participation in sports, within a few months of undergoing the procedure. Spinal fusion surgery can be a safe and effective treatment for maintaining correction of severe scoliosis and has helped children around the world.

Getting a healthy start By Pediatric Critical Care of South Florida

As summer draws to a close this month, families are getting ready for back-to-school. As you start your to-do list for your child’s backto-school needs, don’t forget the most important part - making sure that they get a healthy start to a new school year. Adequate Sleep - Start adjusting your child’s bedtime a week or two before school starts in 10-15 minute increments until they are back to their normal bedtime routine. Ask your child’s doctor what the proper amount of sleep should be based on their age range and stick to it throughout the school year. School Requirements – If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to find out what physical exams or immunizations your child’s school requires before they can begin classes. Consult your school or pediatrician to ensure that your child is adequately prepared. Medical History – If your child has any special medical needs, make sure the school is aware of them. Provide the school and medical staff with the proper medical records and any medications or special instructions

14

southfloridaparenting.com |

012_015 HealthAug.indd 14

that they may need to administer. Provide the school with the latest contact information for emergency situations, including your child’s physicians. Eating and Exercise Habits – Hopefully, your child has been eating healthy and staying active throughout the summer. If not, now is the time to start creating good habits that will last. To thrive in school, kids need balanced meals that include vegetables, fruits and lean protein. Be aware of what your child’s school cafeteria serves and pack a lunch when it is less nutritious than what you would like. Limit TV and video games and make sure your child is getting at least an hour of exercise throughout the day. Be creative with physical activity: the important thing is to keep kids moving. Staying Healthy – Going back to school can also mean colds and flus. Keep your children at home if they are running a fever or have a contagious infection. The best way to stop the spread of germs and viruses is through regular hand washing with soap and warm water. Instruct your child to wash before eating and after using the restroom and playing. Dental Checkups –Untreated tooth issues

can lead to more serious health problems, chronic pain and difficulty speaking, eating or concentrating. The beginning of the school year is a good time for your child to get a complete dental checkup. Ear and Eye Exams – Hearing and seeing well are vital parts of your child’s comprehensive skills. Address any issues that your child may have before they start school. Backpacks – Heavy or badly constructed backpacks can cause shoulder, neck and back pain. Select a backpack with two wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Don’t overpack the bag and distribute the weight throughout the backpack so that it doesn’t exceed 10-15 percent of your child’s weight. Taking a lead on your child’s preventive care and making sure they form healthy habits now will help ensure a successful school year ahead.

Back to School LUNCHES

By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

It’s back-to-school time, which means time to get the lunch bags out and start packing lunches for the kids again. This year, try to get more creative with the meals and encourage your kids to become involved. If you can teach them how to pack healthy lunches, you won’t have to do it yourself. Kids also like to help, and if they have a hand in deciding what goes in their lunch, they may be more likely to eat it. Many interesting products are available that aid in preparing healthy lunches and making foods look appetizing. Bento boxes. These divided lunch containers come in all different shapes and sizes, have separate compartments for foods so you don’t have to use bags and foil, eliminate waste and also help control portions. Reusable food pouches. Blend or puree a variety of

fruits and vegetables and put them in the pouch for your child to enjoy with meals or as a snack. Food molds and cutters. The fun shapes are great for sandwiches. Reusable accessories. Reusable sandwich bags, snack bags, napkins and silverware cut down on waste. Thermos. This insulated container keeps foods hot or cold. Ice-packs. These come in fun animal shapes. It is important that lunches are safe to eat, so keep cold foods cold with ice packs and insulated lunch bags. Smoothie pop molds. Pull

them out of the freezer in the morning and by lunchtime, it will be thawed and ready to eat. This is a great way to sneak in fruits and vegetables as well. Repurpose ice cube trays. Use the trays to freeze small portions of things like applesauce and yogurt so that they are thawed but still cold by lunchtime. Show the love. Tell your children how much you love them with a little note in their lunchbox every day. You can find printable lunch notes online, but they are more special handwritten.

The new MyPlate method

makes it much easier to see how much and what types of foods we should be consuming. The guidelines recommend filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables, ¼ with grains, ¼ with lean protein and a serving of low-fat dairy at meals. When packing lunches, make them as colorful as possible and try to incorporate foods from all 5 food groups. Portion control is important, and the amount needed varies for children based on age. Get a daily food plan for your children at choosemyplate.gov. It is easy to get caught in a rut with packing lunches five days a week and pack the same foods every time. Below is a list of foods from each food group to add variety to your packed lunches. GRAINS (TRY TO MAKE HALF YOUR GRAINS WHOLE)

Packing lunches does not have to be a chore, and preplanning can make it a lot easier. You can cut up fruits and vegetables at the beginning of the week so all you have to do is grab them from the refrigerator and put them in the lunchbox. Leftovers make great lunches and require little preparation. If you do not have time in the morning to pack lunches, do it the night before. Make weekly lunch meal plans.

We cannot control whether our children eat every food we send in their lunchbox, but it is our responsibility to provide them with nutritious foods. They may decide to trade foods with other children, so if this is something that concerns you, talk with your child about it. It is OK to send a small treat like a few Hershey kisses or a homemade cookie for

lunch. If you do this once a week and make it a surprise, it is more special than if you do it each day. Take the time to prepare healthy meals, offer a variety of foods and make them look appealing so your kids will want to eat them. Lead your children on the path to healthy eating at a young age so they can grow up strong and perform their best.

Enjoying The Great Outdoors With The Family

Westgate River Ranch PHOTO/JOHN PENDYGRAFT

— Without Roughing It — In Florida BY GEORGINA CRUZ Special Correspondent

For those who love to get away from it all to enjoy the great outdoors – but definitely prefer to do so without roughing it — there is a trend that is growing in popularity: “glamping” or glamorous camping. Here are some options in Florida you might wish to check out when you want to enjoy the great outdoors with the family with comfort:

Westgate River Ranch Located an hour south of Orlando, this property is billed as the largest guest ranch west of the Mississippi. It sits on 1,700 acres in Central Florida cattle lands, surrounded by 400,000 of state and federally protected wetlands. The ranch recently introduced glamping tents that are set on raised platforms and include luxury interiors, a screened-in porch with two rocking chairs and access to private bathrooms. Glamping tents’ amenities include a mini refrigerator, microwave, air conditioning, electrical outlets, ceiling fan, private gas propane grill, private picnic table and board games. The bathrooms have showers with hot water and hair dryers. Additionally, the ranch launched a personal glamping concierge service at no additional cost. This service, similar to a hotel concierge, is available 24-7 and facilitates everything from scheduling daytime activities to starting campfires at night. It also delivers hot cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit and coffee every morning. Other overnight lodging options at the ranch include lodge rooms and suites, cottages, cabins and camping sites. The ranch features activities such as swamp buggy rides, horseback riding, nature hikes,

A 1,200-seat rodeo arena features trick riding, bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing. The ranch also offers the Westgate Smokehouse Grill, a saloon, a general store and deli, a nine-hole golf course, petting farm, swimming, 5,000-foot paved and lighted runway, and a marina complete with boating, fishing and airboat rides. Overnight glamping rates start at $149. Packages are also available and include a golf cart or bicycle rental, $30 resort credit per night and a s’mores kit. Info: www.wgriverranch.com.

a picturesque canal adjacent to Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, and near the shops and restaurants of Downtown Disney, the Treehouse Villas are octagonal in shape and built on a platform 10 feet above the ground. The overall effect is airy and rustic and punctuated by birdsong. There are 60 Treehouse Villas, which replaced similar lodgings at the site that were damaged by hurricanes. Features of the new villas, which opened in 2009, include a wood deck for taking in the views of the forest and canal, where ibises, blue herons and other birds can often be spotted. Unlike the previous treehouses, which had a bedroom and utility room on a lower level, the new treehouses have all the living areas up on the platform — thus looking more like treehouses and providing better views from all the living areas. All the villas have three bedrooms and two baths, lots of glass to take advantage of the views — maybe of raucous families of peacocks that frequent the area — and

hile educators teach math, reading and social studies during the school year, anti-bullying policies and lessons have also catapulted to the top of curricula in Florida schools. In 2008, Florida passed the “Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act” to prohibit the bullying or harassment of a student or employee of a public K-12 education institution in the state. Broward County was the first to implement the policy. Several years later, schools are putting a major emphasis on bullying prevention to make sure students and teachers feel safe and protected. Bullying is defined as systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on students or employees, and it includes cyberbullying. The acronym R.I.P. (Repeated, Imbalance of power and Purposeful) is used to help identify the behavior.

Broward County Public Schools use the “ABC’s of Bullying Prevention” book, which contains three bullying prevention lessons for every grade level and is designed to be taught annually. “Each grade lesson is different but contains the essential concepts regarding bullying that students must understand in order for their Attitude and Behavior to Change: Attitude + Behavior = Change,” said Tresha Fletcher, a program specialist in the Broward Schools’ Diversity, Cultural Outreach and Prevention Department. “We want all students to respect each other and feel safe and protected in school, in addition to making sure they have a trusted adult to speak to if they feel bullied or know someone being bullied.” Miami-Dade County Public Schools require five curriculum lessons on bullying and violence prevention per grade level Pre-K through 12 on preventing, identifying and responding to bullying and/or harassment. In addition, Miami-Dade schools also use Bullying Prevention Train-the-Trainer professional developments, the Student Voices program, the Elementary TRUST (To Reach Ultimate Success Together) Curriculum and the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” initiative. “The Miami-Dade County Public Schools bullying policy aligns with the state’s model policy,” said Deborah A. Montilla, district director of the Division of Student Services. “We recognize that to effectively address the issue of bullying, a multi-faceted approach beginning with the re-culturing of the school environment is essential with the involvement of all stakeholders.” While Palm Beach County uses Universal Guidelines that can be customized by each school to teach about respect, responsibility and kindness, it also has a Single School Culture Initiatives website designed to provide tools for administrators, counselors and teachers to use social

mistakes as opportunities to learn. “We recognize that simply telling students about the Universal Guidelines is a good first step, but people are still going to make social mistakes,” said Kim Mazauskas, the Bullying Prevention and Intervention Coordinator for the district. “We also recognize that parents are wonderful social coaches for their children and designate learning tools for parents to use to help their children respond to difficult social situations.” Each school district’s website outlines their individual initiatives and programs, including special days of observance, curriculum, video galleries and training modules to help educate parents and students on bullying prevention. Some of the key observances include Choose Peace and Stop Violence week in September, National Bullying Prevention Month in October, Broward’s Anti-Bullying week in November, No Name Calling week in January, and a Day of Silence in April. Broward middle schools also collaborate with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to educate students on cyberbullying with the “Think B4 U Post” Campaign. “We have seen that with more education, there has been a definite decrease in the number of bullying referrals,” Fletcher said. “It’s not only about anti-bullying, it’s about violence prevention in general. It’s about teaching character throughout the year and about building relationships with the students.” David Sherman, a youth mentor with Broward Schools, is familiar with bullying intervention. He went through some difficult times during his childhood with teasing and bullying, inspiring him to become part of the prevention program. “Being bullied can change the course of a child’s life in a negative direction for a very long time, and the damage from bullying can be devastating to a child,” said Sherman, who is a health and life coach. “Having two sons of my own increased my sensitivity to what kids go through, and I wanted to help kids find their voice and self-worth. Schools are becoming increasingly aware of the epidemic and are definitely trying to do their part.”

Sherman says schools recognize the effects of bullying and are getting outside organizations to lecture on the subject and bringing in professionals to assist children in a one-on-one setting. “Bullying shatters confidence and selfesteem,” said Sherman, who uses various techniques to help children focus on turning negatives into positives and control their emotions. “With the various ways that a child can be bullied, we really must catch this sort of thing as early as possible and figure out ways to build a child’s selfesteem to combat and fight off this negativity. There is no bully without a victim.” Lowell Levine, the founder and president of the nationally recognized Stop Bullying Now Foundation in North Palm Beach, said bullying is now considered the worst epidemic in the country, with millions of children reportedly being bullied each year. “The most important point that we can instruct all children is that if they are being bullied or know of someone being bullied, to address the problem with an adult as soon as possible, whether it’s a teacher, guidance counselor, principal or a parent,” said Levine, who works with schools and lectures at local venues to help eradicate bullying. Levine, a professional motivational speaker, has helped many parents and children. “Our education to the adults of children K-12 is vital – very vital,” Levine said. “When we teach parents everything about bullying, it helps their child. Our theme is working, but more resources are needed to get the message out to everyone who has a child in K-12. The more the message is delivered, the bullying problem will see a decline.”

What to expect: Making a bullying complaint By Melissa L. Tichauer

While all parts of anti-bullying prevention are critical, the key point is to know how to report incidents of bullying behavior, according to Tresha Fletcher, a program specialist in the Broward County Public Schools’ Diversity, Cultural Outreach and Prevention Department. Broward County’s processes are similar to other school districts: Each school must have an Anonymous Reporting Box at their single point of entry. It is recommended the box double as a “shout out” box to celebrate positive student interactions as well. Victims, teachers and bystanders can report bullying incidents. Reports can also be made through anonymous online forms, by calling anonymous tip hotlines, or to any public school employee. Once a report is made, schools use trained investigators to determine the appropriate course of action and follow up. Parents are notified in writing and/or by telephone of the complaint and the investigative process. In cases of student-to-student school-based bullying, the investigation may include the principal as well as the investigator. The principal or appropriate district administrator shall begin a thorough investigation with the alleged victim and accused within two school days of receiving a complaint. The Florida Department of Education requires that school administrators provide immediate notification to the parents of both the target and the alleged perpetrator of an act of bullying or harassment. Documented interviews of the alleged target, alleged perpetrator and witnesses are conducted privately and separately and are confidential. To protect anonymity, the name of the complainant is not revealed. The school investigator then determines whether the reported act of bullying or harassment is within the scope of the district school system. Within 10 school days of the complaint, there shall be a written decision by the Principal or appropriate district administrator. The principal/administrator will decide the validity of the complaint and any corrective action, if applicable, consistent with the Discipline Matrix. The principal/administrator will inform all relevant parties in writing of the decision and the right to appeal. No retaliation of any kind is permitted in connection with an individual’s bullying complaint, and if it occurs, it shall be deemed an additional act of bullying.

School-based intervention and assistance may include, but is not limited to: counseling and support to address the needs of the targets of bullying, the bystanders, and the students who bully; assistance and support for parents; and evaluation of school culture with recommendations aimed at increasing peer ownership and support. For parents who disagree with the outcome of the investigation, the appeal process has three layers up to the superintendent. If the bullying continues, the severity of the consequences increase, and local municipalities are called. If students continue to experience bullying, they are encouraged to continue to report the bullying behavior to a trusted adult. If the bullying occurs offcampus, parents can call the police.

Stick

TO THE PLAN TO EASE

BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING

BY JENNIFER JHON

As South Florida parents gear up for the start of school, stores nationwide are heavily discounting school supplies to gain their business. But before families hit the shops, they need to prepare, one shopping expert warned. “Like any major expenditure, it is good to go with a plan as opposed to just diving in and doing it,” said Jon Lal, CEO and founder of BeFrugal.com. FIRST, FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED.

Lal recommends first talking to parents with kids a year or two older than yours. “They have just thought about this topic not too long ago,” he said. Friends with experience can say “you can skip this” or “be

sure to get this.” That guidance, along with a school supply list, can help you put together what you need, Lal said. REVIEW WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.

Once you make a list, see if last year’s items or hand-medowns can be used again. “Once you get a grip on what you need to purchase,” Lal said, “then you can think about shopping.” MAKE A BUDGET.

Before shopping, every family should make a budget. Checking prices online can help you establish your spending. “A budget means it’s a little bit easier to financially manage what you actually spend,” he said. “When you go grocery shopping, you know it is much easier to go with a grocery list.” It is the same with school shopping, he said. SHOP EARLY FOR CERTAIN ITEMS.

Parents should shop differently for specific items than they do for generic ones. For example, “kids might need a Dell model such-and-such [laptop] that is recommend by their school. For that one, you don’t want to get a different model or a substitute. … For specific items, you want to shop early, because those items sell out. You don’t want to get stuck.” Families can buy generic items later. “Sometimes the best prices are when the back-to-school season is running out,” he said. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SALES-TAX HOLIDAY.

But there are reasons to shop earlier. During the tax-free weekend of Aug. 1-3, families can save 6 percent on school supplies, clothing and computers. “Definitely shop during the tax-free week, because that’s a guaranteed savings,” Lal said, “especially on big-ticket items when the savings are more significant.” STICK TO THE PLAN.

When parents are confronted with 1-cent and 10-cent sales, they

school

need to ask themselves if the items are on their list. “We make the shopping list so that logic steps in when there is the temptation of getting things ultra-cheap,” Lal said. “Shopping is a very emotional process. By doing the thinking ahead of time, then when we get into a situation where our emotions are being pushed and pulled by advertisers’ very attractive offers, we can rest on the logic that we had ahead of time with our budget.”

b o J a d Lan nd Easy a t s Fa

CONSIDER ONLINE SHOPPING.

Shopping is a lot more efficient, and the process of finding savings is a lot more efficient, on the Internet, Lal said. “It really helps to do as much of your shopping online as possible,” he said. “It saves a lot of time and hassle. You’re not worried about parking … not waiting at the cash register for your chance to pay. “A lot of people don’t do that math on what all that hassle is worth in terms of time and money.” Also, he said, it is much easier to find deals online. “It takes a minute or so to find significant savings. In the real world, that takes hours.” But parents should concentrate their online shopping, he said. “You don’t want to shop at more than a handful of retailers because you’re paying for shipping.” BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS

It helps to be organized. Start by listing what you actually need. Get a supply list from your school, get advice from experienced parents and check for items you already have. Then make a shopping list and a budget. Stick to your list. Don’t buy items that aren’t on your list, even if they are on sale. A bunch of 10-cent notebooks aren’t a good buy if you don’t need them. Shop online to save time and hassle. Use sites such as befrugal.com and Upromise.com that offer coupons and cash back on purchases. Take advantage of Florida’s tax-free weekend Aug. 1-3, 2014. On those days, there will be no tax on the following: school supplies costing less than $15 per item, clothing costing less than $100 per item, computers priced at $750 or less.

How to set a Mommy Clothing Budget By April Erhard

Now that I am a mom, a wife and a new homeowner, I have come to realize that I have to set a clothing budget. I’ve experienced a whole lot of change in a short time period (a little more than a year), and creating a budget will hold me accountable on how much I spend. Now that you know why, let’s talk about how to set a clothing budget. IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SETTING A CLOTHING BUDGET: Income: According to most financial planners, you should spend 4 percent to 6 percent of your take-home pay on clothing. Just multiply your monthly paychecks by .06 or .04 to get your budget. This should include any alterations needed. Keep the alteration cost in mind when making a purchase, and factor that into the price. For quick reference, take a picture of the pricing guide for your tailor. Career Choice: Some jobs require that you spend more money on clothing. Careers where t

the quality of your clothing matters will require you to spend more. Jobs with uniforms can save you serious money! I have stacks of suits for court that I will not be wearing anymore. Also, the more casual the job, the less you have to spend. Some careers, such as hair dressing, require constant replacement due to spillage and splatter incidents. Financial Goals: Saving money to buy a home or renovate your home sometimes takes priority over clothing shopping. If you have credit card or medical debt, then you should be paying that off before making clothing purchases. We are trying to improve our home, so my clothing budget is much lower because of it. Habits: Do you shop every day, monthly or go for a big haul every once in a while? For someone like me who shops all the time, I suggest a monthly clothing budget. You can even make the budget based on paychecks. Multiply .06 or .04 by your paycheck. This works well for bloggers and contract workers who don’t get paid the same every month.

on track. My readers and my husband are my support group. Let the support group (or budget buddy) know that you are trying to keep to a budget and that you need them to be your cheerleader and sponsor so that you stay on track. Return items when you go over budget. This means most items need to be returnable. If they are not returnable, think about the purchase longer. Consult your budget support group to see if you should make the purchase. I am determined to make budgeting work! I was spending almost 50 percent of my income on clothing for a long time during my single life. That is absurd and not a great idea, as it caused me to go into debt. That had to end for the sake of my family and my home. I am keeping track of all purchases and also asking my husband to keep me on track. He is my budget buddy. Some people might not feel comfortable enlisting their spouse in this budgeting endeavor, but in our relationship, it works. We are partners, and I NEED a budget support team.

THE RULES WHEN SETTING A CLOTHING BUDGET Write down what you spend. If you don’t spend it, let the budget carry over. You can save up to buy a big-ticket item. Have a budget support group that will keep you

The most difficult part is explaining to your kids that you did something wrong, and you’re sorry for that. ing to your kids that you did something wrong, and you’re sorry for that. I hate being wrong (especially in front of my kids). I know, I know, I am not the queen of knowing it all, but I love that old-fashioned saying “Mother knows best,” which equates to “she’s always right.” After the day was over, and I picked them both up from camp, I drove straight to Steak ’N Shake and ordered three Oreo milkshakes. When we got home,

we sat down, sipped our milkshakes and laughed. Then they asked, “Why did you buy us such a great treat today?” I said, “I did a horrible thing this morning by saying that word in the car. It was not nice, and I am very sorry. This is my way of saying sorry to you guys.” (Relax, I don’t bribe them with treats all of the time.) My daughter said, “No problem Mommy, I forgive you.” My son said,

“That means if you say the “F” word again, we get milkshakes?” I said, “You never know” with a smile. It felt like such an “Afterschool Special” ending. I always say to myself that these little people were brought here to teach us some very powerful lessons. Each day we see those beautiful faces, it’s another opportunity to become a better person and a better parent.

So this is what it’s going to feel like. I’m standing inside the screened porch looking at the back of my 7-year-old daughter, Jessie, and that of a young man as they walk toward a lake for a fun date. My little girl is wearing her life jacket with a whistle attached. She looks so grown up. The man, who’s actually not that young, is my wife’s brother, Gary. For the past two days, he has taken Jessie out on the lake to teach her how to paddle a kayak. It’s great that Jessie has her mom, Mattie, and Uncle Gary to assist her with water sports, because I don’t swim well and am not comfortable around water. For the past two days, I’ve stood on the dock and taken lots of pictures and video

footage of their kayak rides together. Today, however, Gary has a different

BELIEVE IN OUR FAITH lake and back, all by herself. “She needs to build confidence,” he said. He promised that if she gets in trouble, he’ll quickly get into his kayak and assist her. I’m not the least bit excited about this plan and want Gary to stay within a few feet of her at all times. Don’t get me wrong, I realize the importance of teaching children to be independent, cutting the apron strings, etc., but not at age 7. I decided to stay on Gary’s porch rather than watch. He assured me that with the water level down in the lake, Jessie could stand up at just about every spot, and there’s no danger of her being hit by a motor boat. She’s wearing a life vest and has had lots of swimming lessons. I know that she is safe, but still, I’m nervous. They were only gone a few minutes when I had to look, even though I told myself that I wouldn’t. Jessie was about 50 yards out. I joined Gary and Mattie at the lake’s edge. If Jessie got into trouble, I could run in and save my baby. Jessie reached the other end of the lake. I held my breath as she safely made her turn to come back. With about 50 yards to go, I could barely control myself. I cheered louder than Mattie and Gary combined. She did it! What a great experience for Jessie. She learned a new skill. She learned to be independent in yet another area. She also learned that if you set a goal and work toward it, you can achieve it. I learned a couple of things, too. I need to shelter Jessie less. It’s important for her to have life experiences that help her branch out and grow. I also learned that when a boy comes to the door to take my daughter out on her first date, I will feel like running after the car as it leaves the driveway. Fortunately, I have many, many years to come up with a plan for that, but I think an arrangement similar to the kayak situation might work OK. We could

attach a whistle to Jessie’s clothing, and her mom, Uncle Gary and I would watch the date closely and jump in to assist if we noticed any sign of trouble or heard the whistle. For now the plan is simple – maximize our family experiences before another school year begins and scheduled activities take up so much of our time. For example, we’re taking long bike rides together, which Jessie likes to lead. She used to follow me. What happened? In a few weeks, I plan to hold Jessie’s hand as I walk her to her classroom for the first day of school. I know, even though I don’t like it, that she won’t let me do that for many more years. So I plan to stay in the moment and cherish life as a dad to a third-grader. I’ll cheer Jessie on as she masters her multiplication tables. We’ll high-five after she completes challenging assignments. I’ll remind her that it’s “i” before “e” except after “c” as she prepares for her weekly spelling test. But just as there are exceptions to this spelling rule, I realize that parenting decisions won’t always be clear-cut. My opinions will occasionally differ from Mattie’s, like whether to allow Jessie to kayak solo across the lake. Together, we’ll strive to find the right balance between allowing her to grow into an independent young woman and keeping her close and safe. For now, though, I’m holding on to summer. Too soon it will be time to let go. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments.

If you have minor children and have not yet selected guardians, you are not unlike many parents who put off this critically important task. Perhaps you are waiting for the perfect guardians to present ELISE RODRIGUEZ, ESQ. themselves, or you and your spouse/partner cannot agree on who would be an ideal candidate, or perhaps you feel there is no one you trust enough. In this case, you must remember that done is better than perfect. A decision is better than no decision. If you do nothing, the decision about who would raise your children (if something were to happen to you) is left up to a judge to decide. A judge who doesn’t know you or your children and doesn’t know what’s important to your family will essentially make the decisions about who will care for your most precious loved ones. And the unfortunate truth is, there may not be a perfect solution for you right now. But there is definitely a solution that’s better than your children being raised by someone you didn’t choose. This sensible approach to selecting guardians should help you make this important decision: First, sit down with your spouse or parenting partner and draw up a list of all potential people you would be willing to have raise your children. Don’t judge anyone on the list or even consider whether they would be willing. Just make as long a list as you can of all the people whom you and your children know, like and trust. It is helpful if you and your parenting partner make these lists separately and compare notes after. Then, put your list(s) aside. Second, make a list of the traits you value most in others when it comes to raising your children. Things like a prior relationship with your children, education level, discipline philosophy and parenting style. You don’t need to worry about the financial standing of the people you’re considering

58

for their » future because it’s up to you to provide enough financial resources for your children with tools like life insurance. Next, rank the traits you’ve listed and compare them to your list of potential guardians. Put each of those potential guardians in order of preference based on whether they possess your valued traits.

Once you have your list organized and ranked, check it against these practical considerations: 1. Do your children know them? Ideally, your guardian selection will be someone your children already know and trust. 2. Do they live close by? It’s probably not ideal to uproot your children from their local community if you can help it. 3. Do they share your values? You’ll want to choose someone who will raise your children with the same values and beliefs that you would. 4. How old are they? Choosing an elderly guardian could mean that your children might lose them, too, while still at a tender age. 5. Do they already have a family? If your choice of guardian already has children, would your children blend in well with that family? 6. Are they willing to take on the responsibility? Hopefully the person(s) you choose as guardian would welcome the responsibility, but not everyone does. Be sure you have a candid conversation with them before you name them as a guardian. Finally, document your choices, legally and clearly. In our office, we have a process for creating a comprehensive Kids Protection Plan that covers both the long-term and temporary (emergency) term care of your children, and gives instructions to your guardians and caregivers about how you’d like your children raised. It has an ID card for your wallet stating that you have minor children at home so your children would never be left in the care of strangers. Keep in mind that your choice for guardians may change over time, and you should update your guardian designations as your life and circumstances change. The beginning of the school year is a perfect time to make important decisions for the well-being of your children. This month, make sure you send them off to school protected and well-cared for. Tips for Choosing the Perfect Pediatrician As a national provider of multilingual nurse triage and health education services, the RNs at NurseWise have put together some tips to help guide your search for the best pediatrician for your family.

»

Create a provider list. During the beginning stages of your search – whether due to pregnancy, relocation or another reason – set out with the goal of identifying seven to 10 pediatric providers or practices to review thoroughly. Set a hard deadline for finalizing your top provider list at least three months before your need (i.e., baby’s arrival or your move date). Kick-start your list with recommendations. Asking people you know and trust to share their favorite pediatricians’ offices and what they love

»

about them is a great way to get insight into potential pediatric providers. Because of social media, it’s simple to ask for a referral from a larger group through your online friend network. Tailor your request. When asking for recommendations, think about pediatricians who align with your preferred approach to medication, healing and treatment. Do you favor traditional or holistic medicine or a combination of both? Expand your research. Search parenting magazines and blogs or community papers and blogs for information about pediatric providers. You can also use an online search engine to read parent reviews of pediatric practices. Individual preferences vary, and what works for one person might not work for another, but you can use the reviews to find out more about appointment availability, waiting room wait times, bedside manner, office management and staff approachability. Check your coverage. Look at the back of your insurance card for a toll-free customer service line or website to help you locate a pediatric provider within your health network who is close to home or work. Meet the team. Little ones can’t always tell you where it hurts or their level of pain. By setting a “get to know you” appointment with potential pediatric providers, you can find out more about medical philosophy – and see first-hand how everyone in the office relates with patients. During the appointment, ask questions about beliefs pertaining to antibiotics, immunizations, approach to Western vs. Eastern medicine and more. Doing this step

Fevers and boo-boos almost always show up unannounced, so asking how your provider handles after-hours health concerns will help you evaluate the type of care you get when your provider isn’t available. Find out who covers for your pediatrician when he or she is not available. Ask if the practice provides an after-hour nurse advice line that offers 24/7 access to clinical professionals who can provide peaceof-mind when something occurs outside normal business hours. Manage tips and referrals. Every time you see or hear something you like about a pediatrician or medical approach, send yourself a quick email with a descriptive sentence or two about a great tip or a potential provider. Title the email “My Pediatric Tip List” so you’ll be able to quickly search for and find all of the handy tips and information you’ve collected throughout your provider exploration process. If you aren’t a fan of digital communications, keep a pocket-sized notebook handy to record helpful tips and leads.

“Selecting a pediatrician can be a daunting and overwhelming process for new parents or those trying to find a new care provider due to a move or other life change,” said Kimberly D. Tuck, RN, chief executive officer and president of NurseWise. “Having a strong relationship and regular visits with a pediatrician strengthens the likelihood of uncovering the warning signs of developmental and medical issues early on, helps make sure needed immunizations happen and can enhance your family’s healthy lifestyle.”

Let it Go: Parenting advice from ‘Frozen’ BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S.

With school starting in a few weeks, with never-ending questions about health and safety, with confusing and contradictory parenting advice everywhere, how can any rational parent really “let it go”?

Storms rage. Can’t give up and can’t give in. Elsa, the snow queen of “Frozen,” who is at first terrorized by her own power, learns to embrace a power both beautiful and destructive. She discovers that the extraordinary power she feared and tried to conceal, when combined with “true love,” heals more than it harms. Let it go! Let it go! Every day, parents struggle with things they can’t control, things they can’t predict. There’s no retreating to icy palaces. Parenthood regularly forces parents to find a way back from the dark places of fear and doubt – the “what if’s.” What if my child is unhappy at school? What if she needs me and thinks I’m not coming back? What if someone hurts him? What if, what if, what if? Let it go! Let it go! But you can’t just “let it go” as if you didn’t care. “Let it go” is about finding the power within and finding a way to stand in a strong and safe place through the storms. Sometimes those storms come from the outside and sometimes, as in Elsa’s case, they come from within. Either way, sometimes parenthood chills the warmest hearts.

Acceptance – “The cold never bothered me anyway!” The journey to the ice palace and back is a journey most parents take daily. What is the key to “letting go” of guilt and doubt, imperfection and mistakes, uncertainty and fear? The first step is acceptance: The cold never bothered me anyway. Stop wishing for perfection in your child, in yourself, in others. Parenthood is a daily challenge to understand things you can control and things beyond your control. Elsa can’t change who she is and trying

5 things parents can control:

» personal values » rules and routines that work in your family » unconditional love » the ability to learn and grow and do better » showing up with the best you have every day

5 things parents cannot control

» innate personalities and temperament (parent or child) » developmental time clocks (when » » »

your child finally “gets” the next stage) different parenting styles, values and opinions (family, friends or strangers) fears – real and imagined a great big changing world and an unknowable future

Never “let go” of the things you can control. These are things that define who you are and your family identity through all the storms and challenges. If you fail at these, or come up short, then “let it go” and begin again tomorrow. It isn’t the perfection that matters, it’s the commitment, the determination and resilience. Forgiveness is the ultimate “letting go” because forgiveness holds everyone together through the good and the bad. The things you can’t control require trust – trust in yourself, in your child and in the support of others.

it makes them feel masterful, competent and, most of all, powerful. The secret behind the ability to “let it go” is knowing who you are is enough to handle anything. I’ll rise like the break of dawn... let it go ... let it go Parents need an anthem, too! Each new developmental stage brings new challenges. Things that worked before are no longer effective as children grow faster than parents can keep up. A new school year brings dozens of new adjustments and questions: new teachers, different expectations, new stress. In addition to the outside challenges, with each new year, parents discover something else they weren’t prepared for and all the coinciding emotions that parents feel – emotions like frozen fractals crystallizing over unsuspecting children. Let it go! Let it go!

» Take your time. It’s OK not to know everything right now » Find your time-out place to regroup and renew » Know who your real friends are – don’t try to do this alone » Embrace your power with all its flaws » Act from love – it won’t steer you wrong » The cold never bothered you anyway! Miss Manners Gets a Digital Upgrade…

w o N d e e N u o Y s ip 10 T BY MARGARET SAGARESE Write thank you cards. Say “please.” Open the door for a lady. How antiquated such advice sounds! That may be so, but advice mavens are needed now more than ever to guide us – and our tweens – through the digital landscape. Tweets are no longer bird songs. “Selfies” is a new dictionary term, not to mention obsession. Social Media Today says more than 5 million users are younger than 10. No one knows how many Facebook folks ignore the 13-years-old rule. Our kids can easily run amok in cyberspace. So I have rounded up the latest tidbits from a cutting-edge group of experts. Teach your children well.

1.

Say ‘no thanks’ to pranks. Risk-prone teenage boys with smartphones tend to brainstorm questionable YouTube sensations. Take “gallon smashing,” wherein a boy grabs a large juice or milk container from a supermarket shelf and then (purposely) slips and falls, splashing the liquid

flamboyantly for a viral audience. Charlene C. Giannetti alerts parents to this gag and “Fire in the hole” (douse a fast-food server with soda at the drive-in window) in her new book “Parenting in a Social Media World.” She says, “Parents need to talk with their children about the destructive nature of these acts.”

2.

Resist TMI (too much information). “Check yourself before you wreck yourself” is the way J.J. Cannon puts it in her new book “@Sophie Takes a #Selfie.” Kids post, blog, upload pictures and videos, and tweet endlessly. Details can endanger safety. Private confessions and candids can be cyber-torpedoes that bullies hurl back for purposes of humiliation. Heed J.J.’s “The Internet is not your private diary.” Parents, post that on your refrigerator!

3.

Build a virtual moat of good will around you. Cannon coins her term “virtual moat,” as in you are the queen of your digital kingdom and you can screen out whomever and whatever you choose. The sad fact is that people say things online that they would never say to someone's face. Make sure your child never become one of those. Empower him or her to set standards of kindness and honesty. Keep actions positive. That means not passing along hate speak. If mean comments pop onto the screen, delete and block the offensive sender. If harassment is harsh or continues, kids need to seek out a parent or trusted adult.

4.

Keep time the old-fashioned way. “Teens use their cell phones as a tracking device, texting and monitoring each other’s whereabouts,” explains New York mom-journalist Jennifer Senior and author of “All Joy and No Fun.” They have “a different sense of time and planning etiquette.” A fluid concept of time conflicts with parents’ desires

stages » preteen to track them and their destinations. So teach kids to navigate real time as well as virtual spur-of-the-moment living. And put a “digital lights out” boundary on texting and iPads.

5.

Watch language. Cyberspace is peppered with LMFAO, and F this and F that. Kids curse to sound grown-up with acronyms, clever codes all their own. Parents upload pictures of their kids cursing as entertainment. And then there’s the jk (just kidding.) That jk is like an insincere PS, usually added at the end of a lame insult or nasty come-back. It’s plain and simple mean-spiritedness. What a tween types can peg them as crude, rude and mean, so watch it.

6.

Respect the privacy of others. Tagging someone in a photo without their permission is a no-no, according to Cannon’s etiquette canon. And if someone tags your tween without his or her permission, you have every right to be annoyed and to request that they take that picture down. In between the lines of this etiquette tip — be careful who your child poses with, not to mention how. Selfies can be spontaneous fun, but troublesome. A Source Jobvite survey asked recruiters “Have you reconsidered a candidate based on their social profile?” and 42 percent said yes.

7.

Ponder the question: To save or savor the moment? Have you noticed that wherever you go, whether to a birthday party, a concert or a travel excursion, everyone you see holds up a smart device to video or click a photograph or to pose for a selfie? Whatever happened to living in the moment? We have become so busy capturing the moment that what’s missing is enjoying the moment. While it’s great to create a digital replica of Kodak moments, let’s not forget to live life. Debate this question with your tweens. Challenge them to try keeping devices turned off and just breathe in the experience and store it in their memories.

Tween alert: Like yourself first and foremost. Life online is all about being connected. In other words, it’s about being validated by the comments and endorsements (“likes”) of others and the numbers of “friends” in a cyber-circle. Kids can get sucked into all this connective-itis. Young adolescents, 10-to-15-year-olds in particular, crave a sense of belonging and desperately want to fit in. They risk becoming obsessive about texts and “likes,” putting their self-worth in jeopardy. It takes time for tweens to build a strong sense of self. And that means learning to put online life in perspective and not hanging on the texts and clicks of others.

9.

Parents: Censor Yourself. Remember Rielle Hunter, paramour of John Edwards as he ran for president? Rielle may be old news, but Giannetti worries about the repercussions that will hit their daughter, Frances Quinn. All those media stories, centerfolds Rielle did and tapes, along with a barrage of nasty cyber reactions, lay in wait for this child as she grows up. Most of the social media warnings are aimed at kids, but parents need to ponder what damage they inflict with their own TMI.

10.

Bleep Bullies. This bears repeating even though efforts to fight meanness have been included in some of the other tips. Why? Bullying persists, despite how often it is railed against. It rears its ugly head in cyberspace. No one is safe. Did you know that Anne Hathaway, star of “The Princess Diaries” movies and Oscar winner for “Les Miserables,” became targeted on Facebook with a page called “I Hate Anne Hathaway”? Giannetti tells us that Anne-haters chimed in on blogs and media websites. Stay vigilant. Laurie Mandel, Ed.D, founded GetAVoice.com to alert kids, teachers and parents to anti-bullying tactics. Spread the word in your blogs, posts and tweets that bullies are not cool. Margaret Sagarese is the coauthor of “Cliques: 8 Steps to Help Your Child Survive the Social Jungle.”
