Making Miracles For The Tiniest Patients We know how important your children are to you, even before they’re born. That’s why parents-to-be come to the Jackson Fetal Therapy Institute at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami to address rare birth defects and dangerous conditions of pregnancy. Here, at the only center of its kind in the southeastern United States, our team of fetal surgeons, nurses, sonographers and pediatric subspecialists – led by Dr. Rubén Quintero – treats babies still in the womb, through keyhole surgeries. After delivery, the babies have access to everything from routine care to specialty treatment. Why would a parent go anywhere else? Visit JacksonFetalTherapy.org or call 305-585-6636 to learn more.

While Leyna Gonzalez (pictured) was still in her mother’s womb, in a high-risk procedure, Dr. Rubén Quintero, Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos and a specialized team from the Jackson Fetal Therapy Institute saved her life by removing a large tumor growing from her mouth, through a minimally invasive surgery.

Winter in Florida is the best time of the year. The cooler weather makes this time ideal for enjoying the outdoors, whether at parks or zoos or in your own backyard. Winter is also a great time to visit a theme park. January and February are slower months at Disney, Universal and Legoland, so winter visitors have shorter (or no) waits for rides, character appearances, etc. Really want to avoid theme park lines? Check out Legoland in Winter Haven and Universal Studio’s new Diagon Alley. Both are ideal ways to entertain the kid in you without the usual crowds. Go online to SouthFloridaParenting.com for more.

g n i s i Ra HEALTHY KIDS

By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

e are seeing more children with an unhealthy weight these days. The statistics are disheartening, but need to be recognized to help combat the epidemic. According to the CDC, more than 12 million children and adolescents aged 2-19 are obese. The good news is that obesity in children ages 2-5 has significantly decreased during the past eight years. Obesity is defined as a BMI for age at the 95th percentile or above, and overweight is a BMI in the 85th-94th percentiles. Obesity poses many serious health threats, such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and sleep apnea as well as low self-esteem and depression. It is important for parents to be aware of their child’s weight, consult the pediatrician to address any concerns, and make changes if necessary.

W

12

southfloridaparenting.com |

012_013 Nutrition.indd 12

What causes Obesity? Obesity can be caused by poor eating habits, lack of exercise or heredity. A child who is obese by age 12 has a 75 percent chance of being an obese adult. This is why it is critical for parents to ensure their children lead a healthy lifestyle beginning at birth.

Healthy Eating As parents, we are in control of what our children eat for many years. Parents provide the eating environment and determine when and what foods will be served. Children

will control if they will eat or not and how much they eat. By providing balanced and portion-controlled meals and not allowing food to be eaten anywhere other than at the table, you can help ensure your children are eating in a healthful manner and building healthy habits. Use a smaller plate to help reduce portions. Refrain from putting pots/ plates of food on the table and instead make a plate at the counter and take it over to the table to eat. This can help keep you from grabbing more

food just because it is in front of you and not because you are hungry. Children need to learn to regulate their intake by eating when they are hungry and stopping when they are satisfied. Encourage your children to eat their food slowly and to wait at least 10 minutes before getting more. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full. We should eat to the point of satisfaction, not to the point where we cannot possibly take another bite of food. The old saying of “clean your plate” should be thrown out. There is nothing wrong with having leftovers.

Build a Healthy Plate If you have not seen the new MyPlate recommendations, visit choosemyplate.gov with your children. This is a great way to promote healthy eating and teach your children about nutrition. Using the plate method, your meals should consist of the following:

JANUARY 2015

12/10/14 9:00 AM

family » nutrition FRUITS AND VEGETABLES - fill ½ your plate with these nutrient-packed foods: Fresh or frozen fruits and veggies Dried fruit Canned fruit in its own juice Canned vegetables (make sure to rinse them well to decrease the sodium)

LEAN PROTEIN - ¼ of your plate; about 3 ounces per meal Skinless chicken and turkey Lean ground beef Pork tenderloin Fish Eggs Peanut butter Nuts and seeds Beans Tofu GRAINS - ¼ of your plate; make at least half your grains whole (look for 100% whole grain or 100% whole wheat on the label) Brown rice, wild rice, white rice Quinoa, couscous, barley Pasta Bread, tortillas, bagels, crackers Pancakes, waffles, muffins (made

from scratch is better)

LOW-FAT DAIRY Milk Cheese Yogurt

» » »

AVOID EXTRA FAT AND SUGAR Limit sauces, gravies, salad dressings, sour cream and other toppings, and look at the nutrition facts panel to see what the serving size is Use cooking spray instead of oil or butter Stick to water and milk for beverages; limit (or avoid) juice, soda or sweetened beverages Limit chips, cookies, cakes, pastries, ice cream, candy, etc., as these foods provide little nutritional value

» » » »

Be Active Children should be physically active at least 60 minutes every day. If your child is not participating in sports or exercising, find activities they would enjoy doing. Taking a walk as a family

after dinner each night is a great way to get the whole family moving. Television and computer time should be limited to no more than 2 hours a day. Talking with your child about their weight can be difficult. Avoid harming their self-esteem and contributing to depression. Do not single out an overweight child; everyone in the family should be eating in a healthy manner. Focus on talking to your children about healthy eating rather than the number on the scale or how they look. Teaching them what foods provide the nutrition they need and why high-fat, high-calorie, sugary foods and beverages are not good for the body can help lead to a healthy lifestyle. You can also teach your children how to read food labels to find nutritious foods and learn about proper portion sizes. Childhood is a time of building lifelong healthy habits, so be a positive role model and raise healthy kids.

New rules put healthier snacks in schools By Dr. Paula Thaqi and Bob LaMendola Florida Department of Health in Broward County

Goodbye to sodas, potato chips, candy bars and sugary sports drinks sold in Florida schools. Nutrition standards put into effect on Nov. 1 removed a lot of the less-healthy food from vending machines, snack bars and stores in the schools. The new rules aim to cut calories, fat and sugar from the snacks available to children because of increasing rates of childhood obesity. Food items on campus are now healthier. “This is a big change, and it’s not easy,” said Darlene Moppert, a registered dietician and nutrition education manager for Broward County Public Schools. “The District is doing all we can to make foods available during the school day that are healthier for our students.” School cafeterias already changed their meals to meet upgraded nutrition standards, which were passed by Congress. Now, com-

14

southfloridaparenting.com |

014_017 healthJan.indd 14

petitive food items sold in vending machines and other venues must comply, too. The items must meet at least one of four nutritional standards:

» At least 50 percent of grains are whole grains. » The first ingredient must be fruit, vegetables, dairy or protein. Contain at least ¼ cup of fruit and vegetables. Contain at least 10 percent of the recommended daily amount of calcium, potassium, vitamin D or fiber.

» »

In addition, snacks must contain no more than 200 calories per serving, no more than 35 percent of calories from fats, and no more than

35 percent of net weight from sugar. Elementary and middle schools can sell only water, low-fat milk or 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. High schools may also sell lowercalorie sports drinks. “This is definitely a change in a positive direction, and we hope that standards will continue to move in the direction of good health for all youth,” said Ellen Feiler, director of health promotion and social marketing at the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. She leads the Nutrition and Fitness Task Force of Broward County. Some school principals and food sellers have expressed

concerns that the new standards may decrease vending machine sales, which supplement school budgets to support other student activities. Moppert said sales are expected to rebound as students embrace healthier snacks. Nutrition advocates say the standards could be stronger. First, the rules do not apply starting 30 minutes after school ends through midnight, which allows schools, parents and organizations to sell lesshealthy foods at after-school games and events to raise money. Second, principals can waive the rules so students and organizations can sell less-healthy food during fundraisers to support their activities. High schools can allow fundraisers on 15 days per year, middle schools 10 days and elementary schools 5 days. Fundraisers may not start until 30 minutes after the last lunch period. For more information on the new school rules, search “smart snacks” on www.freshfromflorida.com

Birthmarks in Children By Dr. Ana Duarte

Many children are born with marks. These are known as birthmarks. These marks may vary in color from white, red and pink to brown and black, and they often have no effect on your child’s health. However, certain types of birthmarks may be signs of a serious underlying medical condition. Other marks might need to be removed to prevent possible health problems or may require cosmetic treatment in the future. If you are concerned about your child’s birthmark, speak with your pediatrician or dermatologist about the best way to handle this condition, possible complications and the most likely outcome. There are several types of birthmarks, including brown/black skin bumps known as moles. Many moles are harmless, but larger, thicker moles may be at risk for developing a dangerous skin cancer called melanoma and should be examined by a doctor right away. In addition, your child’s dermatologist should evaluate any mole of any size that changes or has irregular shape, color or border. Vascular birthmarks are made up of an overgrowth of blood vessels that are generally close to the skin’s surface and are usually pink or red. Some of these “strawberry marks” may stay the same size and may gradually disappear before the child turns 10. However, others may grow rapidly and require immediate medical attention for treatment. “Salmon patches,” also known as “stork bites” or “angel’s kisses,” are pink areas that generally fade away as a child grows. “Mongolian spots” are blue or purple birthmarks caused by pigment just under the skin; they generally cause no problems and fade during the first couple years. As mentioned above, treatments may be necessary for a vascular birthmark that is growing quickly in a sensitive area. For example, a birthmark on the eyelid could obstruct your child’s vision. Treatment might include laser procedures, oral medications or, at times, surgical removal. Some pigmented birthmarks are also connected with genetic disorders. Cafe-au-lait

spots, which are light tan, can occur in children with neurofibromatosis, a disorder of the nervous system. A port-wine stain – a purplish birthmark caused by dilated blood capillaries – may be associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare congenital condition that can affect the brain. Some other vascular birthmarks may be linked to PHACES syndrome, a condition that can affect the brain, heart, eyes and breastbone as well as the skin, or PELVIS syndrome, a condition involving abnormalities to the urinary tract or genitals.

DANGER SIGNS While most vascular or pigmented birthmarks are harmless, you should examine your child’s skin occasionally to see if the marks change or grow. Contact your doctor right away if your child has any of the following problems related to a birthmark: • Bleeding • Color change • Inflammation • Itching • Open sore (ulceration) • Pain • Change in size • Change in texture

A dermatologist can usually make a diagnosis based on the appearance of the skin, although laboratory tests may be necessary to determine if skin cells are cancerous. An accurate diagnosis is very important with unusual looking moles, since skin cancer is best treated at an early stage. Your dermatologist can also discuss treatments for large birthmarks on the face, shoulders, chest or arms that may affect your child’s appearance and self-esteem. There are many ways to manage these conditions and help your child get off to a good start in life.

Dr. Duarte is Medical Director of the International Birthmark Institute (TIBI) at Miami Children’s Hospital, a comprehensive multispecialty center of excellence for the evaluation and management of all birthmarks.

riving into Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on the main road called the Parkway, the sheer number of attractions that can entertain a family is mind-boggling. As far as the eye can see, there are diversions beckoning you and your kids to stop and give them a try. At the end of the Parkway, rising up, overlooking the towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, sits the main attraction, as far I was concerned: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. My husband and I, along with our three children, visited the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding area for a week this past summer, and every day was an adventure. One of the experiences our family tried in the town of Pigeon Forge was the Smoky Mountain Alpine Roller Coaster. This thrill ride takes you down the side of a mountain in a toboggan. The onemile track dips and curves as you enjoy the spectacular views. Another highlight is the towering 200-foot-tall Great Smoky Mountain Ferris Wheel at the Island, a retail and entertainment center nestled at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains. At the top, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the mountains and the surrounding areas.

For the first four nights of our trip, we stayed in a cabin about 2 miles off the Parkway. This is relatively close compared with other cabins. If you choose to stay in a cabin, be sure to ask how close it is to a main road, as many of the rentals are miles off a main road and sometimes accessible only by a dirt road. Our cabin had a wonderful view of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was especially interesting to watch the rain clouds roll in over the mountains on the two rainy afternoons we had. At times, the peaks seemed to play hide-and-seek through the famous haze that hangs over the range. Other times, we could see every

family » travel detail of the majestic view we had from our cabin balcony. Our first day in the park, we decided to explore some of the scenery from horseback. There are four stables within the park. We chose the Cades Cove stable. They do not take reservations, so there might be a wait on busier days. We amused ourselves watching a flock of wild turkeys in an open field as we waited in line. Once our small group mounted the horses, I could see each horse had the perfect temperament, even for the most inexperienced rider. The horses responded easily to every command as we rode along the rocky trails and through creeks. The next day, our destination was Clingmans Dome. At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s highest point. It is also the highest point in Tennessee, and the third-highest peak east of the Mississippi. On the way back from zip-lining, the kids begged to stop at one of the many mini-golf courses, go-cart tracks and museums that invite tourists along the Parkway. We promised the kids we would venture back out after a short break so they could enjoy more of the fun that Pigeon Forge has to offer. As we rested, our three children jumped into the river that runs alongside the Inn. They fed the ducks and made friends with some other children staying there. They were having so much fun swimming and exploring the river, they no longer wanted to go anywhere. It happened to be the Fourth of July, and we had planned to go to nearby Patriot Park to see the fireworks. Instead, we spread a blanket next to the river and had a picnic dinner with our new friends while watching fireworks above the treetops. The relaxing, low-key evening was

oys and girls are starting sports younger and training harder. With the increasing pressure for child athletes to perform better by being more fit and more skilled, parents, coaches and health providers need to ensure their safety by following recommended strengthtraining guidelines. And those guidelines have changed in the past decade. In 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) revised its policy on strength training by children and adolescents, dispelling the myth that lifting weights and performing pushups while bones are growing can cause serious, growth-stunting injuries. However, it noted it “is opposed to childhood involvement in power lifting, body building, or use of the 1-repetition maximum lift” in youth who are still growing. “Appropriate strength-training programs have no apparent adverse effect on linear growth, growth plates or the cardiovascular system,” it said. Freddy Marfort, a certified South Florida personal trainer and strength training specialist, said strength training is any type of physical exercise that uses resistance to build the strength, endurance and size of muscles. “Strength training doesn’t necessarily mean getting in the gym and lifting heavy weights,” Marfort said, “so under good supervision, there’s no reason why a child … wouldn’t be able to start a fitness program. That may be done with his or her own body weight, elastic bands and weight training machines.” A child’s physical, cognitive and social maturity are key factors in determining the age at which he or she is ready to participate in a strength-training program. “Some researchers suggest that the ages of 7 or 8 years old is a good time to start,” Marfort said. “At the same time, we need to remember that not all children develop as fast. If children at this age were to start a strengthtraining program, light weights and good technique would be the best way to start.” Proper practice is key, Marfort said. “It is very important to focus on the children’s technique, balance, flexibility, coordination and agility. Teaching a child squats, lunges, push-ups, sit-ups, to mention a few, would be a good idea.” Once young athletes can perform strength exercises with proper technique, balance can be introduced, he said. “This would maximize the use of stabilizer muscles, as well their core. This could be done by asking them to perform a squat on a Bosu ball, or to complete a lunge but when coming to a starting or up position, making them hold one leg up without falling.”

For strength training, little Johnny should not be trading reps with you at the gym or at home, as even scaled-down adult exercise regimes are inappropriate for many children. “You have to be very careful not to overdo things,” said Nancy Mariani, director of skating development at Saveology Ice Rink in Coral Springs. Since young people are likely to have a disconnect between their ability and what they want to do, it’s imperative to select a properly structured program and provide supervision to keep them safe, Mariani said. “The supervision reinforces and makes the athlete more confident of what they are doing and how their development is going.” AAP RECOMMENDATIONS: » Proper resistance techniques, safety precautions and strict supervision by a qualified instructor are critical safety components in any strength-training program involving preadolescents and adolescents.

»

Preadolescents and adolescents should avoid power lifting, body building, and maximal lifts until they reach physical and skeletal maturity.

»

Athletes should not use performanceenhancing substances or anabolic steroids.

»

Children with health concerns should have a consultation with a pediatric specialist before beginning strength training.

»

Strength-training programs should include a 10- to 15-minute warm-up and cool-down.

»

Athletes should have adequate intake of fluids and proper nutrition, because both are vital in maintenance of muscle energy stores, recovery and performance.

»

Aerobic conditioning should be coupled with resistance training if general health benefits are the goal.

»

Specific strength-training exercises should be learned initially with no load (no resistance). Once the exercise technique has been mastered, incremental loads can be added using either body weight or other forms of resistance. FIT AND FABULOUS MOMS SHARE TIPS AND TRICKS TO GETTING HEALTHY POST-PREGNANCY BY JOANIE COX-HENRY

aving a baby typically leaves most moms with some postpartum poundage that simply won’t budge, but Boynton Beach mom Kristy Wexler has some secret weapons to tip the scales in the right direction. “I gained the most weight with my daughter Addison. I put on 45 to 50 pounds, which on my 5-foot-1 frame can be overwhelming,” said Wexler, a mom of three and co-founder of Aquabelly, a

water fitness program for mothers and mothers-to-be. “I learned a lot through all three of my pregnancies. You have to give into your cravings sometimes, but you don’t want to go overboard. With my most recent pregnancy for my daughter Drew, I ate a lot of vegetables and fruits, but then after I had her, I needed to make sure I was still eating enough. As a busy mom, you can easily forget to eat. Some days it will be 2 o’clock and I’ll realize I left the

toast in the toaster six hours ago.” Since having Drew, Wexler has shed 43 pounds. She attributes exercising throughout her pregnancy to helping her drop the post-baby weight more easily. “I exercised more with Drew than my previous pregnancies because I knew more about it and wasn’t on bed rest,” Wexler said. “There’s not enough information out there on how beneficial exercise during pregnancy can be. The small changes exercise creates to

keep your pelvic floor strong can make for a smoother delivery. But there are also some reasons to ease up on exercise during pregnancy. It’s all about listening to your body.” Protein-packed foods such as Greek yogurt are among Wexler’s top tools for losing weight and still staying healthy. “Remembering to eat to fuel the system is essential,” Wexler said. “I ate a lot of oatmeal, and finding alternative sources of protein has been a huge help. Moms on the go can grab a Greek yogurt or some ricotta cheese and hard-boiled eggs. I eat more clean now and read food labels as much as possible. It’s a big deal when you start looking at all the preservatives in food. The body can’t metabolize it, and you end up gaining weight.” Although Wexler has changed her daily menu drastically, she still indulges in coffee. “I still love my coffee in the morning but instead of artificial creamers, I switched to Natural Bliss creamer,”

Wexler said. “Small changes can go a long way.” Wexler also recommends new mommies get moving. “When it came time to choose between a gym membership and a jogging stroller, I went with the jogging stroller,” Wexler said. “I didn’t want to leave my baby in a gym day care, and this was a way for me to take my baby with me while still fitting in exercise. I try to do some sort of exercise five times a week.” On Feb. 24, 2013, when Wexler’s youngest child was four months old, the ambitious mother ran her first 5K. “I downloaded this amazing free app called C25K, and it really helped motivate me to start jogging,” Wexler said. She says her pre-parenting days were more unorganized, but now Wexler sets her alarm earlier to fit in limited, yet essential, time for herself. “Being a mom is hard work and doesn’t shut off,” Wexler said. “I started setting my alarm earlier so I could fit in a workout before my children woke up. I knew if I got my ‘me’ time and had that extra energy, I’d have better quality time with my kids. Finding a little time for yourself every day is so important. And you have to remember to just breathe.” Finding that balance for some personal time also helped new mommy Kimberly Corvison get her groove back. Corvison gave birth to her daughter four months ago, and the Miami Shores resident and part-time hair stylist is dancing her way back into her pre-pregnancy shape. “I don’t have a rigorous exercise routine,” Corvison said. “I walk with my daughter in my arms, and we dance to The Beatles. I’m always bouncing around with her.” On weekends, Corvison enjoys pushing her daughter in her stroller over the Rickenbacker Causeway. “It’s about a 2-mile walk, and it’s great because we both get out of the house,” she said. “But I’m still losing weight. I was 176 and now I’m 134. I lost a bunch of weight right after I gave birth. Before I was pregnant, I wasn’t eating meat or bread, but during my pregnancy, I got really bad acid reflux and started

eating a lot of sandwiches.” According to Florida Hospital statistics, pregnant women are more at risk for acid reflux, and 25 percent of pregnant women experience symptoms, especially during the third trimester. Many women suffering from acid reflux during the third trimester can only eat certain foods without feeling sick, and they end up gaining more weight than they should. “It feels terrible carrying that extra weight around,” Corvison said. “I was anxious to lose the weight and start feeling like myself again.” After delivering her baby, Corvison once again cut bread out of her daily eating plan and lost weight. When she hit a plateau, she got a NutriBullet, which she says changed her life. “I hit 150 pounds and then the scale wouldn’t move,” Corvison said. “I just started juicing and eating everything natural with no added sugars.” The 35-year-old mom also credits breastfeeding for getting her body back into shape. “I’ve been breastfeeding, and that burns about 500 calories day,” Corvison said. “The more milk you make, the more calories you burn. While I don’t have any magic solutions, my best advice is to keep moving and don’t eat bread.”

Inhale. Pull inward. Not even close. Lie down on the bed. Inhale again. Minor grunt and pull harder. Failed a second time. Deeper inhale. Major grunt PATRICK HEMPFING and pull with all my might. Success! I buttoned my pants. OK, maybe the pants I managed to close hadn’t been worn in a number of years, but still, I questioned, “How did this happen?” I have a bookshelf full of tennis trophies proving my athletic prowess. I still play tennis once or twice a week and walk the dog daily. I have jump rope and hula-hoop contests with my fourth-grade daughter, Jessie. We also play basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball together. How did these extra pounds end up around my waist? I have a few sneaking suspicions, beginning with “Two-Donut Thursdays.” Hey, my wife, Mattie, needs gas in her car and the donut shop is on the way. I also love ice cream, which is my comfort food at the end of each day. Recently, Mattie lost six pounds. Is it possible the pounds could have jumped off of her onto me while we were sleeping? Or maybe it’s my intake of licorice, which keeps me alert while I’m typing or driving on long trips. The bag claims in big letters that it’s a “low-fat snack.” My final hypothesis is that my metabolism has slowed down. According to WebMD, “for most people, metabolism slows steadily after age 40.” Though Jessie keeps this 54-yearold dad active, there’s only so much she can do. Or is there? “Dad, I can help you lose weight!” I erred when I thought trying to get my pants shut was going to be the hardest part of my day. In

a dad's view a heartbeat after hearing about my waistline problem, Jessie had the laptop computer set up in the living room. “Dad, it’s time for your cardiovascular workout.” Before beginning the workout, I remembered something I had seen on a recent stroll with the dog. My neighbor stopped at the end of the street, dropped down and did 30 pushups. As he walked past me, I said, “Wow, I haven’t done that many push-ups in 30 years,” but I thought, “Show-off!” Now, I might not be the poster boy for a gym, but felt confident I could handle a 9-minute workout. Besides, it would be a fun daddy-daughter activity. I wasn’t even intimidated when a disclaimer popped up on the computer screen that suggested consulting a health care professional before proceeding. Without going into all the details, three words summed up that workout: “It wasn’t pretty.” I knew about minute 3 that the next 6 minutes were going to challenge every ounce of my mental and physical toughness. I continued on with the confidence that at least I taught Jessie at an early age to dial 9-1-1 for emergencies. By workout’s end, my flushed face was pressed against the living room carpet, but I had enough lung capacity to gasp, “Don’t call for an ambulance.” As my face regained its natural color and my breathing resumed its normal pattern, I realized my stud-muffin days have passed. Mattie says those days were all in my head anyway. Now I have to worry about the muffin top that’s starting to hang out over the waistline of my jeans. Apparently, I need to make lifestyle changes involving fewer sweets and more physical activity. Luckily, I have Jessie and her various exercise programs and ideas. She already has the next video planned for our workout – belly dancing. I’ll be sure to read any disclaimers that pop up before I do any shimmying. I might buy a bigger ice cream scoop, too. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments. May your resolutions be easier than what Jessie is planning for me.

“To be wronged is nothing, unless you continue to remember it.” — Confucius Our kids do things that drive us nuts and make ALLYSON TOMCHIN, LCSW us crazy. That is a reality of parenting. They don’t listen to us when we try to guide them, they wait until the last minute to do homework, they leave their rooms a mess, they get bad grades, they can just be plain rude, they complain, they don’t come home when we tell them a specific time, they are brutal to their siblings, they glue themselves to the TV or video games when we tell them to get ready for dinner and the list goes on. They are simply being kids, and that is what they do. They will either apologize or they won’t, or we make them say “I’m Sorry.” The question is, how do we let it go, how do we forgive, and why is forgiveness so important? Kids are like tornados. They swirl in, do the damage, and then suddenly things return to normal after the storm. That’s what they think. Kids are unaware of the damage the storm does in its wake, leaving the parent feeling drained and exhausted and often resentful and angry. Forgiveness means letting go of anger and resentment. It also means to let go of feelings of revenge. Sometimes when our kids do things and we feel angry about it, we hold a grudge. Grudges are bad, bad for the parent and equally bad for the kids. Holding a grudge and consistently bringing it back to the parent-child relationship is damaging to your children. Reminding kids over and over again the “bad behaviors” they have engaged in is unnecessary and not an effective way to parent. Have a talk, express your thoughts, attempt to understand their point of view, accept their apology and move on. Parents are the ultimate role models, and if a parent can’t let go, the child will learn to hold grudges, too, and never feel that they are forgiven and can move on. Human beings are flawed. We make mistakes all the time. This is an important and crucial aspect of life. That’s what makes us so interesting.

Grudges are unhealthy, and Mayo Clinic reports that if you’re unforgiving, you might:

»Bring anger and bitterness into every relationship and new experience

»Become so wrapped up in the wrong that you can’t enjoy the present

»Become depressed or anxious »Feel that your life lacks meaning or

purpose, or that you’re at odds with your spiritual beliefs Lose valuable and enriching connectedness with others

»

Research shows us that forgiveness is essential to life and to being happy. If a parent can’t let something go and the anger is welling up, it is recommended for that parent to process their feelings with another parent, family member, friend, peer or, if necessary, a mental health professional.

According to Mayo Clinic, letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for happiness, health and peace. Forgiveness can lead to: Healthier relationships Greater spiritual and psychological well-being Less anxiety, stress and hostility Lower blood pressure Fewer symptoms of depression Stronger immune system Improved heart health Higher self-esteem

How do we forgive? Being aware and insightful of our own behavior is crucial in forgiveness. Understanding that forgiveness is healthy and leads us to happy relationships is important. The more we practice forgiveness, the easier it gets. Remember, practice makes perfect (or close to it). Reflect on the facts of the situation, how you’ve reacted, and how this combination has affected your life, health and well-being. Practice empathy, which is trying to understand emotionally what happened from the point of view of the person that wronged you. “The Tiny Buddha, Simple Wisdom for Complex Lives” states the following: How did I forgive when it was hard? I came to this realization: No one ever gets to the end of their life and thinks, “I wish I stayed angry longer.” They generally say one of three things: “I’m sorry,” “I forgive you” or “I love you.”

PARENTING PROMISE FOR 2015: to be braver, stronger, smarter than you think BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S.

Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” — Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh Brave, strong and smart. Heart, body and mind. What do you want for your children in the new year? Everything! What do you want for yourself? To be enough! Each year ends with reflections: How did I do? How’s my family? Each new year starts with promises – to be better, do more, take better care of yourself and others. The secret to the A.A. Milne quote isn’t strength, courage or intelligence. It’s holding on to the unwavering belief that you already have all the super powers that you need and that your child is and will be capable and successful. This year’s parenting promise is: Believe! Everything changes if you believe.

YOUNG CHILDREN NEED TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES, AND THEY NEED TO BELIEVE IN YOU. Believe that you are smarter than your child. Not always – not when you are reacting to the latest tantrum or button pushing. You are smarter if and when you take time to understand your child’s behavior and slowly, patiently, help your child grow and learn. Meet your child exactly where she is – in this stage, with this personality. Lead your child to become the kind of person you respect.

How long does that take? You might want to ask your parents. The good news is, there’s time. BELIEVE THAT YOUR CHILD WANTS TO LEARN AND BE SUCCESSFUL. Potty training, for example, fails not because children hate going potty on toilets. It’s delayed (never fails) because children create self-sabotaging behaviors when emotions or understanding derail them. They are counting on the grown-ups to not give up. Every parenting challenge – bedtime, meal time, transitions, fears, learning to read, learning empathy and kindness – requires unwavering faith in your child’s long-term potential.

No stress First, feel the pressure melt away. You are brave, strong and smart enough to handle any situation in your child’s life. Why? Because you ARE the parent! Fallible, yes, but that’s OK. Because you are the grown-up – the one who gets to be in charge in your family, the one who gets to make the decisions and learn and grow. You get to do this, and whatever you don’t know, trust me, you will learn through experience.

No guilt Keep it simple. Let yourself give love freely, all that you have when you have it. Then, don’t feel bad when you’re tired, spent or cranky. Take a break or schedule time to recharge. Get the kids in bed at a time when you still have some energy left over to be kind to you. No guilt; pushing an exhausted parent to give more will not raise happier, more loving children.

Mistakes are good – really How can you give your children the same unwavering belief in their own resourcefulness? By celebrating the process! Look at all the things your child can do today that she couldn’t do six months ago. Remember all the behaviors that seemed like they’d last forever. Children get stuck where they are (in no-win tantrums, in irrational thinking, in a limiting developmental stage). Children are counting on parents to hold the bigger picture

stages » child for them. In the words of the hotel manager at the Best, Exotic Marigold Hotel, “Everything will be all right in the end. If it’s not all right, it is not yet the end.”

Teach optimism and resilience The leaders of tomorrow will be the children who learn not to give up, who keep learning. To be braver, stronger and smarter than you think is to dig deep within to find the grit to keep trying – even when it’s hard, when it takes time and when you feel foolish. Parents can’t give that to children all wrapped up with a pretty bow. Learning is messy and frustrating. Parents can, however, teach optimism and resilience. Every age and stage in children’s development has age-appropriate problems that children learn to solve with age-appropriate strategies. Be your child’s No. 1 cheerleader.

»

Help identify what your child can do when he gets “stuck” on a problem or with emotions, such as change something that’s not working, ask for help, or calm down. Fill your child’s bank with success stories with praise like “You are so brave when you hold your teddy bear while waiting for the doctor.” “You are so strong when you push the chair out of your way (instead of screaming in frustration).” Or, “you are so smart when you count the steps from the car to the grocery store.” Express confidence while still respecting your child’s individual pace and learning curve. Two-year-olds who bite do not become aggressive teens. Three-year-olds with pacifiers do not take them to high school with them. Four-year-olds who can’t sit still may become dancers or comics, but they still become fully functional grown-ups.

»

»

Problem-solving kids are resilient and resourceful. They are absolutely, unequivocally braver, stronger and smarter than they know. Teach children to believe they will know more tomorrow, and you will raise children who will always believe in themselves.

Her FIRST Bra BY MARGARET SAGARESE Although it happened a long time ago, I can still feel the scratchiness on my chest as if it chafed yesterday. I am not sure if I was 10 or 11. The delight of wearing a brand-new, striped, sleeveless shirt and matching shorts was ruined by soreness as my new tiny breasts rubbed against the starchy cotton. The scratchiness – and the pointier nipples – struck me as horrible. I bring up my memory to underscore how disquieting it can be for girls as they morph into womanhood. Physically developing is an emotional hurdle. It is exaggerated today because girls are experiencing puberty earlier. The average Caucasian girl encounters breast budding at 9.7 years old, four months younger than 17 years ago, according to the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Program. For black girls, the age is 8. According to these figures, the number of girls developing breasts in first grade has tripled. These changes are due to better nutrition, hormones in food and the increase in childhood obesity. All this adds up to the reality that girls want or need (or don’t want) that first bra sooner than ever before.

44

southfloridaparenting.com |

044_045 StagesPreteen.indd 44

Giving girls a sporting chance My 11-year-old daughter, Skyler, was thin and tall for her age and not sporting curves. So there was no initial need for her to start wearing a bra, and “bra or no bra” didn’t turn into a power struggle for us. But many mothers and daughters do have battles and tears over the “you need to be wearing a bra” scenario. Girls who develop early can be loathe to embrace those changes. After all, everybody starts noticing their developing breasts and curves, especially boys. This is unwanted attention and can make such girls hide underneath big T-shirts or sweats. Underneath a girl becoming a woman lurks the danger of entering a highly sexualized culture: girls as sex objects. Thongs, push-up bras, music videos about bigger luscious butts, risqué Halloween costumes, pop stars like Miley Cyrus who went from wholesome to wholly naked – the fashion and entertainment industries have stolen childhood. Even if girls don’t talk about this or acknowledge it, that doesn’t mean they are not affected by the toxic brew that surrounds them. The coauthors of “So Sexy So Soon” (Diane Levin, Ph.D., and Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D.) write, “They learn to associate physical appearance and buying the right products not only with being sexy but also with being successful as a person. While they struggle to make sense of all this, children are robbed of valuable time for age-appropriate developmental tasks.” Little wonder that some girls don’t want to enter the bra years. For some, sports offer a distraction. My own child decided when it was time for a bra. She opted for a sports bra. This had more to do with fitting in. Sky happened to be on a soccer team, and a black sports bra was as much of the uniform as the jersey, the cleats and the knee-high socks. Also, playing sports gave her another purpose for her body and diminished the self-consciousness of stepping into bra-wearing territory. Girl athletes get to think of their bodies as powerful, to be toned and worked and to serve an athletic goal of good performance. Body as a strong vessel, a winning vehicle, plays a counterpoint to the overall message that girls get to be sexy and flirty.

stages » preteen A guide to shopping for that first bra Nowadays, girls who are ready for a bra can opt for a camisole. These can provide coverage and not be as noticeable as a bra. If and when you and your daughter decide to go shopping for a real bra, department stores offer many choices. Some stores have salespersons to assist you with proper fit. Shop where a bra should be tried on. Kelly O’Brien, a lingerie specialist who launched the first ecommerce site specializing in tween underwear (Tween.ShopLinger.com), recommends parents take into account these three guidelines:

1.

One size does not fit all. “One size fits all” may work if your daughter falls into an average slot. Many don’t. When you start looking at bras with cup and band sizes, you’ll need to measure your daughter. For the band size, wrap the measuring tape around underneath the breasts. Add 5 to that number, and that’s the size. (Tape says 23 inches, band will be 28 inches.) For cup size, measure around the fullest part of the chest and subtract that number from the band size. The difference is the cup size – 0 to 1 inch is an A; 2 inches is a B.

“My day

is filled with discoveries, like leading with confidence and learning how to soar.

2.

Check the strap length. Straps are not one-size-fits-all, particularly if your tween is petite. Most are adjustable and stretchy. Be sure the strap can be shortened enough for comfort and fit.

3.

Go for a bra with lining. Initially looking at a padded bra may make both you and your tween uncomfortable. However, the padding is not intended to make your child more voluptuous. It is meant to provide a thin layer of foam to smooth over the nipple area so nothing is visible under the shirt. O’Brien says, “It’s a modesty measure that also helps some girls feel less self-conscious.” Back in my tween day, I could have used a modern bra with a soft lining. Thinking about your own first bra memories can give you understanding and patience if your daughter feels resistant or acts downright uncooperative. Plus, it’s good practice for what’s ahead. approach to a New Year By Mrs. Mae

To the majority of the world’s population, a New Year represents a time of fresh beginnings, since old things are officially in the past and we can move forward with a clean slate.

But why wait every 365 calendar days to feel this way, when each new day brings about new opportunities and expectations? This year I challenge everyone to start seeing each morning as a fresh new start, because it is. Just imagine how much more exciting life would be if approached with the same can-do attitude as the New Year. Here are a few tips to get you going in the right direction: Speak your reality into existence. Words are powerful, so waking up each morning and speaking positive affirmations over your life can be very empowering and set the tone for the rest of the day. Set realistic goals. Truth is most people make goals, but they are not always realistic, leading to feelings of being unfulfilled and overwhelmed. While setting goals or making resolutions, be sure they are obtainable and that you have mini goal checks along the way to make sure you are on task. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way. Rejoicing in the little things makes us feel good, keeps us encouraged and most importantly allows us to enjoy the journey more. Surround yourself with goal-oriented people. “You’re only as good as the company you keep.” Surround yourself with people who inspire you, encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and celebrate you. Be a good steward over the 24 hours we are given each day. Many things call for our attention, but what things are actually worthy of our time? Have a daily prioritized agenda. Wishing you all the best, Mrs. Mae Mrs. Mae owns a company called The Imagination Laboratory, which specializes in early learning services and Mommy & Me programs.

January Winners PRESENTED BY

BROWARD COUNTY

PALM BEACH COUNTY

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

There is no way I can share all the ways Mrs. Blocker rocks in 150 words or less. First, my son is autistic and is in a general education classroom. My son has special needs and Mrs. Blocker loves him because of his special needs, not in spite of his special needs. She embraces his exceptionalities and tells me every time we speak how wonderful it is to have my son in her class. She is stern, loving, and motivational all in one seemingly effortless breath. She is commitment to all of her students, and that shines through in everything she does. Her passion for excellence and accountability in education has distinguished her. She is loaded with compassion, and that is what pushes her to excellence, and it is the driving force behind her success. Luckily she has enough to spare and I am so grateful she shares it with my special guy.

My teacher, Mrs. Michaud, rocks because of so many different things. She is always there to help you, no matter what the question or problem. She makes each student feel like they are special. I want to do my homework and get good grades to show her that she is a great teacher. She makes learning so much fun. If you met her, you would understand. I don’t want to leave her class when it is time to go.

You can tell when someone is passionate about her work, that that describes Berania Sosa, kindergarten teacher. She keeps parents updated with what was done in the class by subject and other announcements. She also maintains her website neatly with all the information you need. What impresses me the most is that she maintains such a good communication with her students and their families. We are lucky to have her. She is such an inspiration for her wonderful work with the kids.

Nominate a teacher who deserves recognition PRESENTED BY

Throughout the 2014-15 school year, we ask parents and students from elementary schools in the tri-county area to nominate their favorite teachers who deserve to be recognized. A teacher and nominator from each county will be awarded each month and will be featured in print and online.

Tell us in 150 words or less why your teacher rocks, and you could win tickets to local attractions compliments of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

Click on “My Kid’s Teacher Rocks” and fill out the form. PRIZE SPONSORS
