Unlike the TV stereotype, dads today are connecting with their children, embracing the caregiver role, making their families a priority. Young fathers are working from home or taking family leave to be with their newborns and young children. Some are even leaving the workforce for a time to be the primary caregiver to their kids, a trend noted in the most recent U.S. census. The societal standard of the uninvolved father is gone. Dads are engaged; they are blogging, forming father-child playgroups and organizing school events. The Daddy Day Care age has arrived, and as we honor fathers and their roles in our lives on June 15, that new era is something to celebrate.

associate editor’s » note

When good kids go bad As I write this column, I’m worrying about my son’s upcoming fifth-grade Safety Patrol trip to Washington, D.C. I’m fretting about him being away, worrying he’ll miss me, and realizing my little boy is growing up. My daughter, on the other hand, is dancing around the house, as excited about his departure as she LAURA is about the last day of school. Honestly, the girl is giddy. My children were born two years apart, but since the moment I brought my daughter home from the hospital, he’s been scheming to blot her out of the picture. The older my children get, the worse they fight. My son taunts my daughter with threats to behead her dolls or bury her pretty skirts in the backyard, and she retaliates with high-pitch shrills that split eardrums. She learned that smacking him doesn’t work, because it was always met with his karate chop. When I finally can break it

up and get to the root of the offense, it’s always something ridiculous like, “she changed the channel,” or “she drank out of the milk jug.” I know this is normal. Sibling rivalry, fighting and bickering are rites of passage. It’s been experienced by every KOKUS brother, every sister. It’s an important part of growing up. Your sibling is your first real peer, your first experience at give-and-take, your first relationship that is usually on the same level. Mom and dad are head of the house. You and your sibling only live there and have to follow the same rules. My sister and I never got along. I am older, but she was bigger and could beat me up. My only defense was tattling and, boy, was I good at that. There was nothing to gain but my mother’s favor, but my sister was the baby of the family, and she always got away

with stuff. I am getting mad just thinking about it! Parents, how did you fare with your own siblings? Two of my coworkers shared horror stories about their experiences. One colleague said her sister put another sister through a wall, and when she was a baby, her mother stopped her older sister from stabbing her with a pen. Another coworker said she and her brother would fight endlessly, even with their mother threatening to send them both to therapy. Now adults, they are best friends. Is that what I have to look forward to with my children? Fight Club? Beat downs? I know deep down they love each other. And I hope they can work out their differences with as little screaming, tantrums and bloodshed as possible. I am always in referee mode, trying to keep the peace. Makes me wonder if those parents who decided on just one offspring were on to something.

Self-defense duo shares top safety tips for women and children By Joanie Cox-Henry

t’s an unfortunate reality, but every 22.2 seconds, a violent crime occurs in America. While every crime can’t be prevented, the way one reacts to these situations can help. Charley and Tracy Vega, a Florida-based couple, have developed Simple Self Defense for Women & Children to teach them life-saving tips and techniques. As leading personal safety experts, the pair has appeared on Marie Osmond’s talk show, Lifetime Television and a variety of news stations to discuss the importance of self defense and how parents and children and can become more aware of their surroundings. Charley Vega, who taught martial arts for 30 years, teaches women you don’t have to fight to fend off an attacker. “There are things you can do to escape and get away,” he said. During the age of texting and constant digital distraction, Tracy Vega’s top tip is to always be aware of your surroundings.

I

“No one seems to be paying attention anymore with iPhones and iPads,” she said. “Always be aware of your surroundings and never let anyone get in your personal space. Keep a safe distance of 7 to 10 feet from someone who is creeping you out or giving you a bad feeling. This distance gives you time to run.” Women often ask the Vegas about what to do if they are approached in a parking garage. “Bad guys come up to you. If this happens, put your hand up in a stop motion to their eye level,” Tracy said. “You’re showing them you’re not an easy target, and you’re also getting the attention of people around you.” “Purse safety is another essential tip we teach,” Tracy said. “One of the worst things a woman can do is carry everything in her purse. Only carry what you truly need and leave anything you can’t replace, such as priceless photos or jewelry, at home. And if someone grabs your purse, let it go. It’s not worth your life. I recommend only carrying one credit card and leaving items such as your social security

card in a safe place at home.” Charley and Tracy affectionately refer to each other as the “Sonny and Cher” of self-defense, and they bring a touch of comic relief to their workshops as well as relatable, real-life scenarios. In working with children, educating kids on what can happen is key. “One of the biggest things parents teach their children is stranger danger,” Tracy said. “We developed a program called ‘The Safe List.’ Put five to seven people on the list that you would trust your child to go with or get picked up from their school by. If the person is not on this list, give your child strict instructions that they are to never leave with anyone else. There have been several situations recently involving kids approaching the vehicles of acquaintances and getting into danger. Teenagers can also benefit greatly from having ‘The Safe List.’ It’s extremely scary, but 73 percent of sexual assaults are by someone you know.” To escape a possible abduction, Tracy says it’s OK to teach your children to be rude

in a scenario that’s making them uncomfortable. “Children do not need to be nice to everybody, especially people they don’t know,” Tracy said. “And although most parents tend to want to write their child’s name on the back of their backpacks or lunchboxes, don’t do it. This is how bad guys strike up conversations with children they don’t actually know. It’s better to use an avatar [graphic or picture] with your child that only you and your child know.” If a car inches closer and closer to a child, Tracy always advises the child to never approach the car, and if they are riding their bike and get approached by a stranger, never let go of the bike. “If an attacker is trying to take the child, it’s much harder to pull a child on a bicycle into a car,” Tracy said. The Vegas always encourage their workshop attendees to pay it forward. “If one woman or child is saved from our tips, we’ve accomplished what we set out to do,” Charley said. “Spread the word. If we show you how to prevent an attack, please show someone else.”

DON’T BE A BULLY CONTEST! South Florida Parenting invites all children, parents, teachers and friends to create an image for our inaugural “DON’T BE A BULLY” contest, presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at Memorial. Bullying is a major problem, not only in our schools, but also on the playgrounds, on the ball field, even in the home. And social media only aggravates this problem. We want you to take a stand. Use your creativity to make an amazing cartoon/comic/or slogan to help promote anti-bullying. Let your

Swimming Pools: Simple Steps Save Lives By Linda Olson

Drowning is the leading cause of death and injury among children under the age of 5. In the first four months of this year, five children under the age of 5 in Broward County died from drowning, and two others remain in critical condition, likely to have a lifelong disability if they survive. In addition, two boys age 6 and 10 drowned in Delray Beach. All the tragedies happened in backyard or apartment swimming pools. The loss of a child is devastating to parents, siblings, family members and the community, especially because drowning is almost always preventable with simple steps. As parents, we talk to our children about the importance of staying healthy by eating vegetables, exercising and getting a good night’s sleep… but how about being safer around water? Parents need to have three conversations with their child about water safety:

1.

“Don’t go near a pool

12

southfloridaparenting.com |

012_015 Health.indd 12

sible behavior from your child, another child or other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there, and make sure they are responsible. Not the time to multi-task. When children are in the pool, you must give them full attention in order to properly supervise. Supervision fails. Create barriers. Realistically, parents cannot monitor their children 100% of the time. Set up secondary barriers such as isolation fences on all four sides, alarms and locks on doors and windows. Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the pool first. Know CPR. Don’t rely solely on your ears. Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle, they silently slip beneath the water – usually with a parent nearby.

»

»

or body of water without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation because it is so simple. Even a young child can understand that certain areas are off limits and the dangers of being alone around a pool.

2.

“If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult.” A child trying to save another person in the water is likely to result in two victims, not one. Practice with your child how to recognize someone who needs help in the water and how to run to get an adult.

3.

“If you fall into a pool, don’t panic. Turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice while wearing clothes to experience the sensation.

Rethink Pool Safety…

»

It can happen to you. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk. They just didn’t think about the danger being so close. Don’t pass the buck. Take ownership of your child’s safety. Don’t rely on respon-

Aventura Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is NOW

Managing a Child’s Painful Ear Infections By Dr. Yamilet Tirado

Many children suffer from painful ear infections. It might be a brief episode, perhaps after a bad cold or flu, that goes away without treatment. But if an earache is accompanied by a high fever or other symptoms, you should contact your doctor right away. Although there are many types of ear infections, the most common is called otitis media, an inflammation in the sensitive middle ear just behind the eardrum. Bacteria or viruses can invade the middle ear if fluids become trapped in the Eustachian tube, which leads to the nasal passages. Ear infections are most common in infants because they have small and short Eustachian tubes that can easily become blocked because of colds, allergies, irritating tobacco smoke or infected glands in the throat. However, getting water in the ears will not cause an infection by itself. A child with an earache might complain about a loss of hearing, tug on her ear or cry frequently for no other apparent reason. If you see a sudden drainage of pus from the ear, contact your doctor right away, as this might mean a ruptured eardrum. Fortunately, ear infections are not contagious, and most cases clear up after a day or two. To reduce the pain, apply a warm towel to the affected ear, put overthe-counter pain relief drops in the ear or take pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen (but do not give aspirin to children). Children younger than 6 months are usually treated with antibiotics, but older children may not be given bacteria-fight-

ing medications because many ear infections are caused by viruses. If antibiotics are prescribed, be sure your child takes them every day and finishes the entire prescription, even if the symptoms are gone. If your child suffers from chronic earaches, your doctor might recommend the insertion of tiny tubes into the eardrum. This procedure, called tympanostomy, allows air to enter the middle ear so fluids can drain more easily. This is usually done to avoid long-term problems, such as permanent loss of hearing, delays in the development of speech or language, or potentially more serious infections. In most cases, a child with ear tubes will have better hearing and far fewer (if any) painful earaches. Usually, the tubes fall out by themselves as the child matures, although the tubes can also be easily removed by your doctor. By age 5, most children have developed stronger immune systems, which decreases the risk of chronic ear infections. PREVENTING EAR INFECTIONS You can reduce your child’s risk of ear infections with the following healthy practices: Breastfeeding reduces the risk of ear infections. If you are bottle-feeding, hold your baby in an upright, seated position. Minimize the use of pacifiers, especially as infants grow. Do not smoke near your child. Keep your child’s immunizations upto-date. The pneumococcal vaccine is particularly important because it fights bacteria that often cause ear and respiratory infections.

» » » » »

Prevention is always the “best medicine” for ear infections, but be sure to contact your doctor if you have concerns about your child’s earaches.

What is

Your Parenting Style?

Parents determine:

By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

Parents have a very important job: taking care of their family. We have to make sure our children are fed, clothed, bathed, nurtured, educated, safe, happy, and the list goes on. Feeding your child may not be the easiest task but it is a very important one. Children require proper nutrition to grow and develop and we need to instill healthy habits and teach them to become healthy adults while they are young. The way you parent affects your child’s behavior and can have a lasting impact on their nutrition. Four types of parenting styles exist: authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and neglectful.

Authoritative Parents Listen and encourage their children to be independent, but also set boundaries They are nurturing and provide options for their children Children are able to regulate their own food intake and therefore usually maintain a healthy body weight

The location of food - all meals and snacks should be eaten sitting down at the kitchen table. We should try to avoid eating in the car, in front of the TV/computer or standing up as much as possible.

Permissive Parents Typically give in easily; the “yes” parent - if your child whines or begs long enough you cave to their wishes There are often few rules and no limits on foods, so these children tend to become overweight

Authoritarian Parents The parent is in charge and children must do as they say; parents determine all aspects of eating - when, where, what and how much Children are required to clean their plate and dessert is only provided if this is adhered to; food is used as reward and/or punishment Children may develop unhealthy feelings and behaviors about food and eating and

are inclined to be underweight or overweight as a consequence

Neglectful/Uninvolved Parents Little supervision, few expectations, show little affection and attention to their children Foods are not always readily available - parents do not go to the grocery store regularly, so food is sparse and meals are not planned Children become insecure with food and eating because they are not sure when and what their next meal will be Authoritative parenting is the recommended style for raising healthy eaters. Children need structure and boundaries, but they also need some responsibility when it comes to eating.

2.

The content of meals and snacks. Always offer at least 1 or 2 foods that you know everyone in the family will eat. Offer a variety of foods never serve the same food 2 days in a row, prepare foods a little differently each time you serve them. Provide balanced meals lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy. Do not prepare separate meals; everyone is given the same foods. Provide options for your child such as “would you like an apple or yogurt for a snack?” instead of asking “what would you like for a snack?” Avoid restricting foods;

family » nutrition it is OK for your child to have a piece of candy or a handful of potato chips every once in a while.

3.

When the food is served. Set regular meal and snacks times. Children need to learn to eat when the food is served and not graze throughout the day or eat whenever they feel like it. Everyone sits down and eats their 3 meals and 1-2 snacks at the specified times each day, and when finished they get up and move out of the kitchen. The kitchen is “closed” until the next meal or snack time. If kids are truly hungry between meal/snack times, offer fruits and vegetables and/or water. Teach your children to ask for foods instead of going into the kitchen and getting whatever they want whenever they want.

Children determine whether they will eat and how much they will eat. Allowing your children to put the food on their plate themselves or asking how much they want on their plate is a good way to teach them to self-regulate their intake. Children need to learn to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are satisfied. The habits we learn as children tend to follow us into adulthood and the unhealthy ones are often much harder to break later in life. It is important not to get caught up in the day to day when it comes to your child’s eating behaviors because children naturally go through various phases; picky eating, eating the same food every day (food jag), exploring and trying new foods freely or refusing to try new foods, wanting to eat “unhealthy” foods because their peers are, etc. The focus needs to be on providing our children with the knowledge and resources to be healthy adults and know how to purchase and prepare healthy meals. You should be comfortable when the time comes to send your child off into the world alone, believing they will make the right choices when it comes to their health.

DISNEY WORLD Many have heard of Disney World’s newest attraction, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which opened May 28. But Disney has a lot more to offer besides that. MyMagic+ debuted recently, which consists of MyDisneyExperience.com, Disney FastPass+ and MagicBands. MagicBands have been in use by Disney resort guests for almost a year, but the bands went on sale to the public in April, giving all of Disney’s guests the convenience of a park ticket, FastPass+ and PhotoPass in one band. A companion smartphone app allows guests to book FastPass+ online,

check park and attraction waiting times, view park and Disney World maps, build an itinerary, find attractions and restaurants near you, see when and where to find Disney Characters, make reservations, link with family and friends, and more. (Disney planned for the greater reliance of guests on smartphones within its parks, by the way, with free wifi throughout Disney World and free phone charging stations at the parks.) Disney Resort guests have the added convenience of using the MagicBands to access their resort room, charge items to their room (so no need to carry cash to the parks) and book a meal at the Be Our Guest restaurant inside New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom. Another recent Disney program is the Memory Maker program. Guests can purchase a photo package in advance ($149) or once they arrive at the parks ($199) and For more info and photos on Disney's Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Visit SouthFloridaParenting.com

family Âť travel then get access to all of the digital photos from their visit (or multiple visits within a 30-day period). All of the ride photos and photos taken by official Disney photographers (at scenic points in the parks and each of the character experiences) are included. Family members and friends can also link their MagicBands and add their photos to the account. So if Grandma buys the Memory Maker package, she can access and download all of the photos from her children and grandchildren, even if they were at different attractions or different parks during the visit. And if her grandson goes back to the park two weekends later and uses his MagicBand, those photos will be linked to her account as well. The online site allows users to add stickers and borders to their photos before they download them, all at no extra charge, making the Memory Maker perhaps the best buy at Disney. The best part: Instead of getting a bunch of vacation photos of the family without mom or dad (whoever is holding the

camera), the shutterbug can put away the camera and have fun, and the family can stockpile photos that include everyone in every shot. I have more photos of my family of four from one weekend at Disney than I have from the previous year of my life, thanks to this feature. Also new at Disney this year, the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom highlights Disney’s newest film, Maleficent, with a fire-breathing dragon and includes all the recent princesses, including Elsa and Anna (“Frozen), Merida (“BRAVE), Rapunzel (“Tangled) and Tiana (“The Princess and the Frog). Elsa and Anna from “Frozen make regular appearances at the Princess Fairytale Hall for pictures with their fans. (Expect a long wait for this one, though.)

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO The biggest news from Universal Orlando this summer is the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley at Universal Studios and the debut

of the Hogwart’s Express, which will travel from Diagon Alley to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Diagon Alley will feature the shops made famous in the Harry Potter book series, including Ollivanders wand shop, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions, the Magical Menagerie, Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment, Quality Quidditch Supplies, and Borgin and Burkes. Pub fare will be offered at the Leaky Cauldron, and guests can get dessert at Florean Fortescue’s IceCream Parlour. The biggest thrill of Diagon Alley will come from “Harry Potter And The Escape From Gringotts, a multi-dimensional thrill ride through the goblin-run bank in the series. Universal also has some new restaurants open at Universal’s CityWalk, including Red Oven Pizza Bakery and Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food, and a new 50’s-style resort on Universal property.

Fun Things to Do with Kids This Summer

BY ILENE JACOBS

Summer may be a time to relax, but tell that to kids who are bouncing off the walls or shrieking “I’m bored” every five minutes. How are parents supposed to keep kids entertained, active and out of trouble for an entire summer? The trick is to plan ahead. Brainstorm ideas for things to do now, so you don’t wind up spending the summer watching cartoons. Jill Tipograph, summer expert and founder of EverythingSummer.com, suggests: “Take advantage of those bright sunny days and warm summer nights, and plan something new a couple of times a week.” Jesse Koller, mom and publisher of the parenting blog “Play, Create and Explore,” likes to keep kids entertained with crafts. She even holds regular art workshops for local kids. “We have a blast focusing on mostly process art and projects, as well as some sensory activities.” Start creating your summer bucket list today. If you need inspiration, we’ve come up with some things that will keep kids happy -- and you sane. 1. Bake cookies for ice cream sandwiches. 2. Volunteer at a nature center. 3. Make a photo journal or a family yearbook. 4. Have a luau in the backyard. 5. Visit the beach and collect shells. 6. Make a fort out of cardboard boxes. 7. Visit a farmer’s market. 8. Pick berries at a nearby orchard. 9. Have a picnic at a state park. 10. Make ice cream. Tipograph loves using YayLab’s ice cream ball, which you fill with ice cream base and kick around until frozen. 11. Go canoeing. 12. Build a sandcastle. 13. Write and illustrate your own book and have it published into an actual hardcover book using IlluStory. 14. Forget cooking -- set up an ice cream sundae buffet for dinner. 15. Clean up trash at a local park. 16. Have a backyard campfire...or just use the grill! Roast hot dogs on sticks, pop pop-

corn and finish off with s’mores.

17. Stage an A to Z scavenger hunt, where you have to find something that starts with every letter. 18. Make homemade pizza. 19. Print out a list of children’s books that have won Caldecott Medals. Visit the local library throughout the summer and try to read as manyas you can. 20. Go for a walk and then make a collage from nature objects you find along the way. 21. Take bread to a creek and feed the ducks. 22. Have a water balloon fight. 23. Practice your origami skills and make objects to hang from the ceiling. 24. Go biking on a trail 25. Interview an older relative about what life was like when they were young. 26. Plan a picnic at a local park -- or in your backyard. 27. Set up a lemonade stand. 28. Create salad spinner art: Place circles of paper inside a cheap salad spinner, dab tempera paints on top, cover and spin away. 29. Practice making interesting shadow

puppets and then put on a show with your characters. 30. Plant a garden of herbs and veggies. 31. Make a sidewalk chalk mural. 32. Go ice blocking (sledding) in the grass with a towel-covered block of ice. 33. Have an outdoor painting party using huge canvases or cardboard. 34. Take a free kid’s workshop at stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot or Pottery Barn. 35. Plant a butterfly garden with flowers. 36. Pretend to be pirates for a day -- dress up in costumes, plan a treasure hunt and talk like a pirate. 37. Make an indoor sandbox using colored rice: mix 4 cups of rice with 3 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of food coloring and let dry overnight. 39. Make totem poles out of paper towel rolls and decorate them. 38. Turn the backyard into a carnival -- set up a face painting area and games like ring toss. 40. Visit a museum you’ve never been to. 41. Make a giant hopscotch or Twister game on the lawn (with spray paint) or driveway

62. Run through the sprinklers. 63. Blend your own smoothie. 64. Set up a bike wash and raise money for a local charity. 65. Batter up at a batting cage. 66. Let kids paint the sidewalk or patio with plain old water and sponge brushes. When their creation dries, they can begin again. 67. Bake cupcakes in ice cream cones and then decorate them. 68. Assemble a family cookbook with all your favorite recipes. 69. Go horseback riding. 70. Make popsicles in Dixie cups using fruit juices.

Play mini-golf -- or set up a course in your driveway by laying different size containers on their sides. 50. Make your own colored sand and create sand art. 51. Get a map of the United States and mark off all the exciting places you want to visit -- create the ultimate road trip. 52. Set up a net and play badminton and volleyball. 53. Visit one of South Florida’s many water parks. 54. Make a giant slip-n-slide with a painter’s tarp and shaving cream. 55. Go zip-lining. 56. Have a tricycle race at the park. 57. Investigate an ethnic grocery store and make lunch using interesting spices and kidfriendly international recipes. 58. Visit a fire station. 59. LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE DADS BY CHRISSIE FERGUSON

Mothers get the royal treatment annually in May. There are Mother’s Day teas, brunches and spa treatments. And according to Hallmark, Mother’s Day is the third-largest card-sending holiday in the United States. Father’s Day in June doesn’t get near the attention, but we cannot forget that dads need some time in the spotlight, too. Why? Because a father’s role in a child’s life is just as important as a mother’s. “There is so much that engaged fathers bring to families,” says Jupiter-based clinical psychologist Dr. Jonathan Rapp. They play a large role in the “psychological, physical and even the spiritual development” of a child. And while many fathers work long hours daily, they can still be “engaged.” Whether he is fishing, playing soccer or reading a book with his children, Brian Ray of West Palm Beach knows how important it is to spend quality time with his two young daughters - Logan, 5 and Whitney, 4. “Efficient, direct time is the most important type of contact,” says Ray, who travels monthly for his job as president of Garden of Life, a whole food nutritional

supplements company. It is important to unplug, he says. “If you are doing anything at all with your kids, you should make a rule to not be on any technology.” Scheduling one-on-one time with children is also important. “Every Saturday morning, I take my kids on a daddy breakfast, just me and them,” Ray says. “They will run into our room on Saturdays, excited to go and spend some quality time.” A father may also consider becoming a part of a father/daughter organization, such as the YMCA Adventure Guides program Indian Princesses, or a father/son organization such as Indian Guides or the Boy Scouts. Indian Princesses, operated by volunteer fathers from the North Broward Parkland YMCA, provides opportunities for fathers and daughters to bond. Through monthly events, outreach programs and annual camp-outs and trips, a daughter “can rely on her father and talk about things a father and daughter would normally not talk about,” says Mike Morabito, one of the volunteer fathers.

JUNE 2014

5/14/14 3:59 PM

“We share a lot of time together,” says the father of four daughters, who has been in the program for 12 years. “Not only do they learn a lot of what we do, but we learn a lot about women as they go from 4 years old to 14.” While many children may not have a biological father present in their lives – 33.5 percent, according to National Fatherhood Initiative – Indian Princesses encourages other family members to serve as father-figures.

“We have a lot of grandfathers who have brought their grandchildren through the program because they don’t have a father,” Morabito says. Positive male role models are important in a child’s life, Rapp says. While mothers offer a lot to a child’s development, they cannot model to their sons how to be a good husband or a good father. “And they can’t model to their daughters what to expect in a husband or dad,”

» Be a good example. When a father treats » Be an organized dad. Keep a calendar of his wife well, it shows a daughter what kind of man she would want in a husband, and it children’s events, homework, etc. shows a son how he should treat his future » Make events (plays, games, competiwife. tions) a No. 1 priority. » Do not overwork yourself before you get » Create regularly scheduled father/ daughter or father/son experiences. (Sign up home. for activities like Indian Princesses, Indian » Unplug from all technology when you Guides or Boy Scouts). are together. » Schedule a date with your child (a movie, » Participate in the activities your child

Rapp says. Whether you are a father or a father-figure in a child’s life, learning how to spend quality time is not always easy. “You have to make hard decisions about how limited time is going to be invested,” Rapp says. “Just know that the investment in your kids has a huge impact on them, their future lives and even on future generations. “It’s an investment worth making.”

hen a child is born, much emphasis is placed on helping the new mother and baby adjust. But they aren’t the only ones undergoing change. Most first-time fathers experience stress due to sleep deprivation, change in routines and their own apprehensions about parenting. “There are a myriad of emotions that come with being a new father,” says Armin Brott, author of multiple books and one DVD on fatherhood. “Most often it’s a feeling of pride and excitement. At the same time there can be apprehensions—‘Will I be a good father?’ ‘Can we afford this?’ ‘How is this going to change our lives?’” This was what David Wuttke found. “When my son David Jr. was born, I had overwhelming feelings of anxiety and excitement all at once,” he says. “I had been babysitting since I was 16, so my anxiety wasn’t about child care. It was the reality of the JUNE 2014

responsibility that this was my son. And that sent a shock to my system.” Just knowing there’s another person to care for can be a big stressor for first-time fathers. Couple that with the fact that many men don’t initially know how to bond with their newborns. “If a mother is nursing, it naturally brings her in contact with the baby,” says Brott. “Dads don’t have that same natural bonding method, so they often get stuck doing the dirty work. But it shouldn’t be that way.” Susan Maroto, LCSW and parent educator in prenatal care and postpartum adjustment, agrees. “There are things moms can do to help dads feel competent in that role,” she says. “Encourage them to take part in all areas of child care— feeding, bathing, reading and putting the baby down. Just be careful you aren’t overly critical. Standing behind your husband and correcting his every move will only frustrate him. Show him what needs to be done then let him develop his own style.” Fortunately for Wuttke, basic training occurred as a teen sitter and paid big dividends when his son was born. Soon after his wife Christine delivered, she enrolled in college and David was thrust into solo evening child care. “I never had to think about how to take care David. I just fell back on my babysitting days,” says Wuttke. “If he was crying, I would say, ‘Okay, let’s guess what he needs?’ Then I’d check his diaper. If that was okay, I’d try to feed him. If he wasn’t hungry, I thought maybe he had gas or needed to sleep. One of those usually did the trick.” For Anthony Franco, the adjustment wasn’t that easy. When his wife Lisa gave birth to the twins, Franco seemed to be fine. But four months into it, things changed. “I started experiencing panic attacks and didn’t know why,” he remembers. “I would be in the supermarket when all of the sudden I would get this overwhelming sense of dread and lightheadedness.” This went on for several months until Franco finally went to the doctor. “He asked me where it was happening,

36

southfloridaparenting.com |

034_037 First Time FatherFeat.indd 36

and I told him it was when I was buying diapers, formula and other things for the twins,” he continues. “That’s when he pinpointed the problem. He said this happens to a lot of new fathers. He prescribed a little anti-anxiety medication and then I was fine.” Brott believes it’s important for men to have someone with whom they can share their stress. “Some men have close friends they can confide in. But a lot don’t, so they keep all those concerns in and the stress level builds,” he says. “They shouldn’t be afraid to talk with other men and find out what they have gone through. Chances are they’ll find others felt the same way too.” One concern most new fathers share is fatigue. Franco and Wuttke both had a hard time with this. “The one thing I really didn’t expect was that time on a 24-hour clock had no meaning anymore,” says Franco. “It became irrelevant after a while and we just fit sleep in whenever we could.” The Wuttkes solved this problem by enlisting the help of relatives. “There were times Chris and I said, ‘We need a break,’ and my mom would take David so we could rest. We even called my grandparents so we could have an occasional night out.” Extended family and friends can be a huge help or add significant stress, depending upon the dynamic of the relationship, say experts. This is where husbands can help their wives by setting boundaries. “Dad should take the role of communicator outside the family and, if needed, limit visitors,” says Maroto. “Encourage others to help in practical ways such as dropping off meals, running errands or watching the baby for 20 minutes so the couple can take a quick walk.” What’s most important is to realize this is a period of adjustment and life does get easier. “It’s like anything new, it takes a little time,” says Franco. “It took about 18 months before I became completely comfortable with the twins. Now we’re pretty much inseparable.”

Tips for New Fathers ➦ Realize the father’s role is as impor-

tant to the baby as the mother’s is. Remember experience is the best teacher. If the new dad came from a home where there were younger siblings or he has friends with babies, he may fall into the parenting role quicker. ➦ Encourage the new father to get involved in all aspects of child care—bathing, feeding, reading, and putting the baby to sleep. If he needs coaching, give him the basics then let him develop his own style. ➦ The wife should be careful not to criticize her husband’s efforts as this will only frustrate him. Encourage him and make him feel competent in his new role. ➦ Realize that some babies, such as those with colic, are more of a challenge to soothe. If the baby is crying, look for obvious signs of discomfort—diaper change, hunger, fatigue, gas. Try to spend 10 minutes at any one strategy. If it doesn’t work, try another one. Remember newborns can also suffer from overstimulation due to lights, motion, sounds and people—things that may seem normal are a drastic change from a quiet womb. ➦ The new father should take on the role of communicator with outside family and friends and set limits and boundaries, if needed. Encourage others to help in practical ways such as dropping off meals, running errands or watching the baby so the couple can take a walk. ➦ Extended family can be a huge help or significant stressor. Encourage well-meaning but intruding relatives to refrain from giving unwanted input on child care. ➦ One of the father’s biggest roles is to support the mother. This includes keeping an eye out for postpartum depression, which may have a delayed onset. ➦ Couples should keep a constant line of communication open with one another and discuss how the adjustment is going. Talk about things that are and are not working, and make suggestions for change. ➦ Make sure the new father has an outlet where he can share his stress. Look for a father support group or friend who has gone through this stage. ➦ Couples should work at nurturing the marriage. Make time for intimacy.

I Grouchy: A Tired Dad’s Story By Patrick Hempfing This morning, my 9-year-old daughter, Jessie, and I sat in her pediatrician’s office. As we waited for the doctor, she sat beside me reading, “I Funny: A Middle School Story.” I don’t know anything about the book, but noticed the grammatically incorrect title. If I had written a story based on my mood at the time, I would have titled it, “I Grouchy: A Tired Dad’s Story.” My grouchiness surfaced at the same time as the tiny red spots on Jessie’s abdomen, which she scratched fiercely. A similar thing happened about 10 months ago, and her doctor had diagnosed it as scabies. According to About.com Pediatrics, “Scabies is a skin infection caused by an

infestation with the microscopic Sarcoptes scabei parasitic mite. Although distressing for parents, who associate conditions like scabies and head lice with poor hygiene, scabies is actually fairly common.” WebMD adds, “Scabies can affect people of all ages and from all incomes and social levels. Even people who keep themselves very clean can get scabies.” I can confirm the “distressing for parents” part, and for the record, we shower daily. During our visit 10 months ago, Jessie’s pediatrician had recommended that the whole family use a lotion to kill the mites. Before bedtime that evening, my wife, Mattie, applied the lotion to Jessie’s entire body. How I felt as I crawled into bed, smothered in insecticide lotion, next to Mattie, who was similarly covered, could best be described as, “I miserable.”

The anti-mite lotion was only one step. We also needed to kill the mites not on our bodies. I vacuumed the entire house and everything in it (chairs, sofas, carpet, even the dog), plus both cars. I washed 20 loads of laundry, which took three days. I even put Jessie’s stuffed animals in the freezer to kill the mites. If someone had opened my freezer and discovered a stuffed monkey staring at them, they might have thought, “I crazy.” Today as we drove to Jessie’s pediatrician, my feelings could be described as, “I sad.” Before the doctor’s office opened, I had already stripped both beds and had the washer and dryer running. The day is young and already, “I tired.” I don’t know what made me say this during the 15-minute drive, as I know how much Jessie hates shots, but I men-

a dad's view tioned that at about age 10, children get more vaccinations. This caught Jessie’s attention, since her 10th birthday is only eight months away. She whined, “I don’t want to get a shot.” I clutched the steering wheel, thinking, “I stupid.” So as I sit in the pediatrician’s waiting room, “I grouchy, I sad, I tired, I stupid.” Then I notice a girl a year or two younger than Jessie who is clearly sick. I hear a baby with a bad cough. I look over at Jessie; she’s focused on her book. Except for a little itch on her belly, all is well. Gratitude comes rushing in. “I lucky.” Since her belly began to itch, I’ve probably not been the most pleasant person to be around. Mattie would agree. When I get home, I will tell her, “I sorry.” The pediatrician’s diagnosis is that Jessie’s itch is due to mites from a pet she visited. But this mite is different from the kind she had before; it doesn’t survive on humans and goes away without treatment. “I happy.” Reflecting on this day and another exciting parenting experience, I reach the following conclusions: As parents, we feel lots of intense emotions – I grouchy, I sad, I stupid, I lucky, I sorry, and I happy. Yet, in the pediatrician’s waiting room, I was reminded, “I blessed.” Jessie just finished reading her book. She told me there’s another book in the series titled, “I Even Funnier.” I’m not sure what lies ahead in my parenting days, but I’m going to strive for “I Even Smarter,” which will be helpful when Jessie becomes a teenager. But whether I’m going through a joyous parenting moment (I proud) or a challenging time (I worried), one fact remains unchanged. “I Dad,” and that’s a great feeling.

BIG STROLLER, LITTLE PACKAGE The Mamas & Papas Armadillo stroller solves a lot of stroller problems right out of the box. Its unique, one-hand, compact-fold design makes storing and transporting it a breeze. Folded flat, it is 28 inches long and 12 inches deep, which means there will be plenty of room left in the trunk when packing for summer travel. It also has a handle at the top in the folded position and locks to stand upright. It is car-seat compatible with Chicco, Aton and Maxi Cosi, and has a 5-point harness and adjustable leg rest that makes this stroller more adaptable to your child than most. With the leg rest up and the back dropped flat (with a easy-to-use strap system), your child has a full 38 inches of support during nap time. An XXL removable hood keeps the sun and rain out, and a window at the top lets you peek in on your little one. At the bottom, large swivel wheels and one-touch rear brake make navigation and parking go smoothly, and an easy-access under-seat basket stows your gear safely. This black-framed stroller comes in Lemon Drop, Black Licorice, Blue Fizz, Coral Pink and Stripe. Ages: birth to 50 pounds. $279.99, amazon.com

Convenient security Have you ever wished for a remote control to unlock your house as easily as you unlock your car? SimpliciKey makes a Remote Control Electronic Deadbolt to do just that. The Simplicikey lock opens 3 ways: on a remote, using a keypad and with a key, providing families with several backups in case someone forgets or loses a key. The keypad can be programmed with as many as 16 codes that can be changed at any time, making them ideal for temporary users such as pet-sitters and visitors. The codes also eliminate the need for family members to carry – and potentially lose -- house keys. The SimpliciKey installs easily and uses batteries, so no rewiring is needed, and a companion mobile app launching this summer will allow owners to lock and unlock the home remotely. $249, www.SimpliciKey.com and www.HomeDepot.com

Mompreneur is a combi-

nation of the words “mom” and “entrepreneur.” Mompreneurs are a relatively new trend in entrepreneurship and have come to increased prominence in the Internet age, with the Internet allowing entrepreneurs to sell products out of the home rather than relying on foot traffic to brickand-mortar businesses. They may also take up the same line of work as they had before having children, remotely logging into office networks and telecommuting. I must admit when I started my second business, designing hair accessories for little girls, I ran with the whole Mompreneur thing because I fit the description 100 percent. But when I decided to hire staff, get an office space for a year and make that commitment, was I still considered a Mompreneur? To me, it was less about the title and more about the audience I was targeting and the money I was making. I was a

mom in business, targeting other moms with kids, to buy my products through an online store. Yep! That has Mompreneur written all over it. But what I found is that labeling myself that way affected the “seriousness” of my business in the eyes of many. Was I just a mom with an idea (like the rest of them) or was I a savvy former corporate employee who started her own business and knew what she was doing? I was both! I had a great idea and used my experience in corporate America to start my business. When I searched Entrepreneur, the same site stated: An individual who, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business and assumes all the risk and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes. Entrepreneurs play a key role in any economy. These are the people who have the skills and initia-

tive necessary to take good new ideas to market and make the right decisions to make the idea profitable. The reward for the risks taken is the potential economic profits the entrepreneur could earn. Wow! This sure does sound better than Mompreneur, right? Entrepreneurs are leaders and innovators using business processes. Who wouldn’t want to be considered an Entrepreneur? They mean business. Yes, there may be a higher level of risk for a business that is run outside of the home, with employees and payroll and all that “good stuff.” But the woman running this kind of business could be the same woman who picks up her kids from school and works around her family’s schedule. Doesn’t that make her a mom who is an entrepreneur? Is there really that big of a difference if you are making a profit and contributing to the household? The “Great Debate” between these two types of women is how their peers and their audience perceive them. We are all

consumed with what others “think” about us. We (women) want to hang with the big boys, “lean in,” grab a seat at the table and all that jazz, right? Does it really matter how you are perceived professionally if you are a successful business owner bringing home the bacon? In my eyes, it really doesn’t matter. Any way you slice it, you’re spending money to make money, you’re taking risks, you’re juggling your family, making tough decisions and becoming a great leader. To me that has successful business owner written all over it. Forget the titles and drop the stereotypes. Let’s change the game and call each other women business owners. Make Summer Learning Fun 3.

8.

4.

9.

Going out to a restaurant? Have your child find various letters on the menu. Have older children search for various words on the menu or have them read the menu to you. Getting ready to pay the check? Have older children figure out the tip and the change.

By Cori Nadler, Cori’s Cozy Corner

Summer is a time for fun, but that’s no reason for children to stop learning. If children are given learning activities during the summer, it will make the transition back to school much easier. Keep your children’s minds active all summer with these ideas that turn summer activities into fun learning opportunities.

1.

Blow up a beach ball and draw a line around the center of it like the equator. Now write one number (0-9) in each of the colored sections. Toss the ball around, and when your children catch it, have them add the two numbers that their hands are on. Older children can multiply the two numbers.

2.

Have a wading pool? Fill it up and give kids various-size containers - 1 cup, 1 pint, 1 quart, 1 gallon, etc. Kids can play while transferring water from one container to another. How much water is needed to fill each container? How many quarts fill a gallon? Run a relay race using a measuring cup to carry water across to a gallon container. The team that fills their gallon container first wins.

Have kids practice writing letters or words on the driveway with sidewalk chalk. Older kids can write sentences or a poem with chalk. Raining outside? Use dry erase markers inside on a mirror.

5.

Set up a lemonade stand. Not only will your children get to practice measurements and following recipe directions, but they’ll also get to practice counting money and making change.

6.

Children love helping in the kitchen, so dig out some cookbooks and let your children go through them and pick recipes they’d like to do with you. Older kids can read through the cookbooks while younger children might need some help. Once you select a recipe, your little chef can practice measuring while helping you cook the recipe.

7.

Make a summer journal where children can write what they do each day. Younger children can draw a picture and write a few words, while older children can write longer stories about their daily adventures.

Going on vacation? Get out a map and have your child help you plot out your route. Staying local? Get a local map or print one from the Internet. Have your child plot each place he goes all summer with a colored dot. By the end of the summer, you might be surprised how much you got around.

Practice calendar skills by counting down to upcoming events, a vacation, the first day of school, etc. Practice telling time: Going to the park at 3 p.m.? Have your child figure out how many hours until you go, and how many minutes until you go.

10.

Read, read, read! Read with your child as much as possible. Have your child read to you, a younger sibling, or even a pet. Set a goal for how many books you’ll read over the summer and a special reward for completing your goal. Check with your local library to see if they have any summer reading incentive programs for children. Some banks and other companies also have similar summer reading incentive programs. When your children are riding in the car, have them read the signs. Younger children who can’t read can point things they see such as letters, colors, etc.

5 TIPS to help you manage the dual-caregiver role The Sandwich Generation – those individuals who are caregivers for both their children and their parents – are under a certain kind of pressure that feels impossible to manage. As if the role of “ParELISE RODRIGUEZ, ESQ. ent” isn’t enough, taking on the additional responsibilities of caring for your parents in their old age (or disability) can be overwhelming, to say the least. Throw into the mix a full-time job and a marriage to maintain, and you have more things to juggle than a circus act. Still, it’s important to stay focused on the bigger picture and not get lost in your day-to-day duties. Here are 5 tips to help you manage:

1.

Give up some control. From personal experience, I can tell you that there is no humanly possible way for one person to manage all of the responsibilities that come with being part of the Sandwich Generation. At least not without dropping the ball in some way. So it’s important to take a step back and ask yourself: “What could someone else be doing for me?” Whether it’s something small or something significant, taking any kind of responsibility off your shoulders will be a relief and free up time for other things (such as tip No. 5 below). By giving up control, you are in fact taking control.

Look into government benefits and long-term-care insurance. If your parents are elderly and/or disabled, there are government benefits that can assist with financial and medical resources. And many times, these benefits include activities that your loved ones can partake in. Take advantage of these benefits. It’s what we all pay taxes for. That way, you are not the only one in charge of enriching the lives of your aging parents. If your parents are not yet eligible for benefits offered by our government, speak to your financial planner about the risks and benefits of long-term-care insurance. If you know your parent will eventually need home-care, long-term-care insurance may be worth the investment.

3.

Create an estate plan. Part of the stress of being a Sandwich Generationer is the looming question: “Who will care for them

JUNE 2014

5/14/14 11:31 AM

for their » future

Q.

the way that I do?” And the truth is that no one can possibly provide your parents and your children with the exact same love, care and support that you give them. What you can do is create a solid estate plan with guardian nominations and instructions on how you would like your children raised and how you want them provided for financially. You can also prepare an information bank on how to care for your parent(s) that can include a list of prescribed medications, attending physicians and even your caregiving routine. By providing for those you care for in an estate plan, you are doing everything you can to protect and support them if the unthinkable happens. Then you will feel at peace that you have fulfilled your duties, and your loved ones will be grateful.

Signature Stable Horseback Riding ng Summer Camp 2014

4.

Plan for your retirement. In the midst of saving to support your parents in their old age or disability, and ensuring that your children have the financial resources to attend college, it’s easy to overlook saving for your own retirement. What happens when you’ve managed to ensure that your parents are taken care of, your children are off to college, and you’re out of money? Saving for your retirement should be at the forefront of your mind when you’re making spending decisions for your family’s future. Funding your retirement not only ensures peaceful golden years, but also ensures that your children won’t become part of the Sandwich Generation themselves.

Give your child an experience they will never forget. Call today and receive 25% off first week paid registration. 954-655-2195 www.signaturestables.us

5.

Be kind to yourself. Just as important as caring for the well-being of your loved ones is caring for yourself. Every Sandwich Generationer carries guilt – the guilt of not being able to give your all to your children, the guilt of not being able to return the care your parents gave you, and the guilt of taking attention from your marriage to compensate for other responsibilities. But it’s important to remember that you are just one person and that your family is grateful for your love and support. Be kind to yourself and be grateful for the support that you are able to provide. Make sure that you find stress relief wherever you can, whether it be yoga, counseling, meditation or a quick run. Find the one thing that energizes you and helps you cope. After all, your family will benefit from a happier you.

Keeping your Infant

Healthy and Cool During the Summer Months BY PEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE OF SOUTH FLORIDA The summer months can be a time for lots of fun. Parents need to be aware, however, that potential dangers lurk, especially for infants who are more susceptible to the summer heat. Parents should take care to keep babies healthy and cool during the summer season. The summer heat can cause extra perspiring, which can lead to skin infections and rashes. The best way to keep your baby cool is with extra baths that keep them clean and fresh. Pay extra attention to the folds of their neck, arms and legs. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods during the sun’s peak hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and always find shade whenever possible. A baby’s skin is thin and delicate.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies younger than 6 months should wear only a small amount of sunscreen to exposed skin. Older infants should wear sunscreen more liberally and about every two hours. Parents should choose a waterproof sunscreen that’s at least SPF 15 and is specific for children. During the summer, it is best to dress your infant in loose-fitting, light-colored clothing in natural fibers, such as cotton. Outdoors, they should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, a wide-brimmed hat without elastic and sunglasses that offer 99-100% UV protection. Also, cotton cloth diapers help keep an infant cooler and more comfortable in the hot weather. Never leave a baby in a hot room or a parked car, even for a few minutes. A baby

has a limited ability to perspire effectively and can become overheated quickly, causing their temperature to rise dangerously. An overheated infant can develop sunburn or heatstroke, which is characterized by rapid breathing and high fever. Call your infant’s pediatrician if a baby younger than 12 months suffers a sunburn. It’s important to keep a baby hydrated, and babies need at least 50 percent more liquids than usual in the summer. If a baby is being breastfed exclusively, they will not need water, but an infant may breastfeed more frequently because they are thirsty. Warning signs of dehydration include a flushed face, rapid breathing, restlessness and skin that’s warm to the touch. Water, coconut water, fruit and milk shakes may be good options for older infants who are already on solids. Mosquitos and other insects can be a problem during the summer months. Babies younger than 2 months should wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, socks and a hat, but no bug repellant. Infants older than 2 months should use DEET-free insect repellent products containing less than 10 percent picaridin. Don’t use insect repellent more than once a day. Keep it away from eyes, mouth and hands and wash it off with soap and water. Let your baby have some water fun and cool off by placing him in his bathtub or baby pool with some bath toys. Babies can drown in inches of water, so never leave a baby unattended. You and your baby’s pediatrician know your baby best; always consult with them for the best approach to your child’s medical needs.

Choosing a Preschool: relationships, relationships, relationships!

Location, location, location may be true for real estate, but when it comes to choosing a preschool for your child, think “relationships, relationships, relationships.” The science of early childhood development and brain development mandates that growth-promoting relationships are the foundation for all learning. In the words of The Center on the Developing Child from Harvard University, “these relationships affect virtually all aspects of young children’s development - intellectual, social, emotional, physical, behavioral, and moral.”

So what does that mean when you walk into an early childhood center for the first time? It means hands-on, heartsin learning. The highly skilled teachers, the relationship-building ratios, friendly classrooms, and the developmentally appropriate curriculum are all united for one purpose – to engage your child in meaningful and fun ways. Joy is not optional. Love and patience are daily experiences. Relationships that are “nurturing, stimulating and reliable” are found in a place that is loving, meaningfully busy, emotionally supportive and physically safe. You will see a level of professionalism that inspires and wows you. Early childhood educators are not babysitters. Their professionalism is from experience and training, and it should show you that the people who work in this magical place understand the challenges of being a child - from separation struggles to tantrums;

Early childhood educators are not babysitters.

Their professionalism is from experience and

from hitting, biting, pushing to finding ways to “use your words”; from early literacy and numeracy to scientific inquiry of hypothesizing and estimating. Meaningful curriculum requires teachers who know how to adapt to the quirkiness of little personalities and to all the things that challenge well-planned and well-intentioned routines, from runny noses to new siblings. See it with your eyes - welcoming spaces with materials and activities that excite your child. Hear it in the conversations between children and teachers, between children and children, and in the respectful regard of adults who don’t talk as if the children are not present. Feel it in your gut - ideally, the school you choose will be your child’s home away from home and an extension of your family for years ahead. There are no perfect schools, just as there are no perfect families. You can and

training, and it should show you that the people who work in this magical place understand the challenges of being a child. should expect professionalism - developmentally appropriate discipline, safety and communication policies that protect your child and keep you informed. You must also choose a school that you want a long-term relationship with -- where you can express concerns should they arise, where you can respectfully communicate through disagreements (teacher preferences, nap schedules, personal flexibility), where the school values are consistent with your goals and parenting philosophy. This is a partnership that begins and grows with trust, the trust that each of you wants what is best for your child now and

for your child’s future. Each child is different with different personalities and strengths. Different schools and different philosophies appeal to different children and different families. Best practices, though, are universal -- formed by an emphasis on the socialemotional-cognitive needs of the child through very personal relationships with extraordinary teachers and friends. In a poem titled Learning, La Brita Gilbert writes, “I learn only as much as I think I deserve to know.” Choose a school that believes your child is capable, masterful, competent and deserving, and your child will thrive.

Dads, Daughters and Food BY MARGARET SAGARESE With Father’s Day on the horizon, one of the best things that dads can do for their daughter is to take her to lunch, just the two of them. A father-daughter meal -- pricey or not -- delivers a kind of good nutritioninsurance policy. Half a million teens struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating, according to data from a national survey. The onset of problems with food strikes 12- to 13-year-olds most frequently. Although researchers insist that eating problems are caused by a complex array of ingredients, including genetics, biology, behavior, psychology and social issues, some experienced experts point to what they call “father hunger.”

Clinical psychologist Margo Maine, Ph.D., began treating clients with food issues including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, compulsive eating, yo-yo dieting, overeating, exercise abuse and poor body image back in 1980. It was her clients bringing up their relationships with their fathers that led her to focus on father hunger as a contributing factor. “This unfulfilled longing for father often translates (for girls and women) into conflicts about food and weight,” she said. What is father hunger? It is a child’s deep, persistent desire for a connection with father. When the connection exists, children grow strong, secure and feeling “good enough.” When a father and daughter are remote, a child’s dissatisfaction transforms into doubts, pain, anxiety and depression. Eating -- overeating or undereating -- becomes the stage upon which this drama unfolds.

Does Dad Deserve All the Blame? Men are both perpetrators and victims in the father-hunger syndrome. Boys are raised to separate, to isolate themselves, to suppress their feelings. Girls experience the opposite conditioning of boys. They are taught from infancy to put relationships first. Wanting a rapport, a close relationship with dad seems natural, and being denied one results in cravings and confusion. In her book Father Hunger, Maine sums up her findings and experience, “More and more young women are coping with this conflict by dieting, obsessing about their weight, in order to conform to cultural standards, and thereby get their father’s approval.” That is not to say that fathers and men wanted things this way – to be uninvolved. The status quo

stages » preteen clearly ruled. A father’s role was minimal. That’s how life was until recently.

Adolescence Ramps Up Father Hunger and Its Consequences There is a cruel irony to father hunger for daughters. Just when girls need dads most, most dads step back. The tween years find daughters writhing into a sea of hormones as puberty overtakes their bodies. They become extremely emotional. Girls edging into womanhood want to know how to act. They question “Am I attractive?” “Am I loveable?” Fathers are looked to for answers to these developmental questions. Young adolescent girls bring an intensity to dads as they want to talk about these things. Girls long to understand the opposite sex and how they rate. And girls do all this in a style that is over the top – from giggling to screeching, from restless to rebellious. Uncomfortable with emotions to begin

with, fathers resist daughters who feel overwhelming to them. Add burgeoning sexuality to the mix. As girls physically morph into curvaceous women, fathers often withdraw because the change makes them uncomfortable, unsure if those old hugs or kisses are inappropriate somehow. Girls react. When a girl changes her behavior around food -- under eating or overeating -- she gets the attention of her father. Why does a girl choose so convoluted a strategy? Can’t she just ask her father for attention? “All victims of father hunger suffer from feelings of guilt, grief, anger, loss or alienation, but may be completely oblivious to the origins of these feelings,” Dr. Maine explains.

line read “Now, Dad Feels as Stressed as Mom.” The story aired men’s dissatisfaction with a workplace that gave them little flexibility to tend to their new family responsibilities. “Men are facing the same clash of social ideals that women have faced since the 1970s — how do you be a good parent and a good worker?” pointed out Joan C. Williams, director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California. “This is a pretty sensitive indicator of the rise of the new ideal of a good father as a nurturing father, not just a provider father.” Until fathers satisfy daughters’ needs, what can you do to address father hunger and keep your daughter from turning to food to quench herself? *Mothers: Get out of the way. When eating disorders were originally studied, researchers jumped to the conclusion that mothers were to blame. Mothers put out the media messages that you can never be too thin, right? Aren’t most women/

stages » preteen mothers on a diet nearly all the time? As research rounded out, causes spread out to way beyond a fixation on mommy’s food issues. While it may be useful for mothers to be aware of their own eating and body image messages that they give to daughters, one of the most useful strategies for mom is simply to get out of the way. Let your daughter spend time with her dad. Encourage it. *Dads: Be there and just listen. Men problem-solve. They need to understand that females communicate to share their feelings, not to seek a solution to problems. Young girls want to reveal themselves, seek information, and simply be heard by dad. Such a confidential rapport nourishes and satisfies. Dads, do it over lunch.

A student, Evan Vega, nominated Ms. Goodis. “My teacher rocks because she makes learning fun! We work hard, and she always tells us that we have to be at our best. I can talk to her - she is funny and helps me with my math. Ms. Goodis plans fun science projects and she is going to help make me the best I can be. Everyone wants to be in her class. I want to take her to fourth grade with me,” he wrote.

“Mrs. Walner is one rockin’ teacher - literally!” wrote her student nominator, Jonah Samara. “She writes and records original songs and even puts some on iTunes to help her students learn. Some of her songs are ‘Stop a Bully’ and ‘Reading Test Rock and Roll.’ They give important information that you need to know for living the best life you can. Sometimes she makes songs for our lessons, which makes sure we don’t forget facts about topics like punctuation, the presidents or science. … We think she is the best.”

Ms. Farenga was nominated for her dedication to her students and all the hard work she puts into their education and to her school. She is a dedicated, skilled and passionate teacher who was credited with helping to develop a student diagnosed with selective mutism, who had never spoken in school. “You can tell that she was born to be a teacher as it shows in her love for her students everyday. Thank you Ms. Farenga. You have truly touched the lives of your students,” wrote her nominator, parent Jennifer Carrus.
