Florida lawmakers tackle education reforms By Scott Travis Sun Sentinel

Florida could be in for some big changes in education this year, possibly seeing stricter rules on charter schools, less state testing and more guns on campus. The school year could start earlier in August; veterans could get college discounts; and students may be required to watch a controversial documentary. The Legislature meets on March 3, and already more than 100 bills relating to education have been filed. Here are some proposals to watch. CHARTER SCHOOLS School districts would have to share with charters the property tax dollars now used mostly to build and renovate facilities and buy new computers. At the same time, districts would be allowed to keep out charter operators that have had financial problems before. ACCOUNTABILITY Parent complaints could lead to

a limit on testing – with as little as 10 days in a school year. Districts may no longer have to give hundreds of end-of-course exams, which are used for teacher evaluations. And existing standardized tests would only have to count as 30 percent of a teacher’s evaluation, down from half. An 11thgrade standardized test would be eliminated, and online assessments would be delayed. GUNS Zero tolerance policies for gun use on schools and colleges would be relaxed. Those with valid permits could carry concealed weapons on public colleges and universities. Permit holders must be a least 21, unless they’re in the military, and must not have felonies or drugrelated convictions. School superintendents, with the permission of the School Board, could authorize a school safety designee to carry a concealed weapon or firearm on school property. Supporters say this could benefit schools that don’t have police, including many elementary schools.

SCHOOL START TIME The Legislature passed a law in 2006 requiring the school year begin no sooner than 14 days before Labor Day. That move came after many parents complained about districts starting the year in early August. That could be expanded to 21 days this year, meaning this year the new school year could start Aug. 17, instead of Aug. 24. Some years, it could be as early as Aug. 11. The reason for the proposed changed: Districts have complained the later start prevents them from finishing the first semester before the winter break, and teachers have to spend much of January reviewing. TEACHER PAY The minimum starting salary for a teacher in Florida would be $50,000. That’s about $11,000 more than the starting pay in South Florida schools now. The state would use a formula to calculate the starting pay in future years. CONTROVERSIAL FILM “America: Imagine the World

Without Her” would be required viewing for eighth- and 11thgraders. Supporters consider it patriotic, but the documentary, which is critical of President Obama, has been panned by most critics. VETERANS TUITION BREAKS Honorably discharged veterans and their families would be eligible for in-state tuition, regardless of how long they’ve lived in Florida. FINANCIAL LITERACY High school students would have to complete a one-semester course to graduate. SCHOOL DONATIONS TO BUSINESSES This proposal would allow businesses to register with the Department of Revenue to solicit and collect donations from customers to pay for construction and maintenance of school facilities. DISABLED STUDENTS School districts would have to include occupational skills training in the education plans for students with disabilities.

BROWARD LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO KEEP BABIES SAFE Sun Sentinel report

spike in toddler deaths in Broward County last year — mostly from drowning and unsafe sleeping arrangements — spurred child advocates to launch a safety campaign, #SaferBy4, in February. According to reports, 41 Broward County children died in 2014, most of them age 3 or younger. Nine were lost to drowning and an estimated 20 perished during sleep, causes that are 100 percent preventable, said Kim Gorsuch, an administrator with the Florida Department of Children & Families. She said 11 more Broward children died in 2014 compared to 2013. The goal of the campaign, called #SaferBy4, is to keep kids alive until their fourth birthdays and eliminate toddler fatalities from preventable causes, said Cindy Arenberg Seltzer, CEO of Children’s Services Council of Broward. Drowning is the leading cause of death for Florida kids in this age group, authorities said. A child can enter a pool in the time it takes a baby sitter to answer the phone or start a load of laundry. Nothing replaces vigilant adult supervision, advocates said. But homes should also have door alarms, and pools should have locked gates. When it comes to safe sleep arrangements, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies nap and sleep alone in a crib

with a firm mattress, on their backs and without pillows, bumper pads, toys or blankets. Letting infants stay in beds where sleeping adults could smother them, or even remaining in a parent’s arms after feeding when the parent can become drowsy, should be avoided, said Michelle Reese, executive director of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County. “We don’t know what we’re doing when we sleep,” she said. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Lt. James Carroll said his agency and emergency responders in Pompano Beach, Coral Springs and Hollywood who enter homes during 911 calls also look at where and how children sleep. “If we find a crib full of clutter, we take it out,” Carroll said. “Families are surprised. They just don’t know that they don’t know.” The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County offers free cribs to qualified low-income families. For more information, call 954-765-0550. The Children’s Services Council of Broward County is offering $40 vouchers toward water safety lessons for young children. Ages 1-3 may take up to 10 water safety lessons with a caregiver at participating swim schools, and 4-year-olds get group lessons. Some schools may ask for a co-payment. To get a voucher, call 954-357-7946.

t u o e v a Le the Salt

By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

Sodium is an essential nutrient, however, too much of it can be harmful to your body. Sodium can increase blood pressure by causing fluid to build up in the body, which in turn makes more work for the heart. You may feel swollen or bloated after eating foods that contain a large amount of sodium as a result. By limiting the amount of sodium you consume each day, you can reduce the risk of developing conditions such as stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. The American Heart Association recommends that we consume 1500 milligrams or less of sodium daily. Most of us have more than double that amount most days. It is not just the salt shaker that contributes sodium to our diet. More than 75 percent of the sodium we eat is already in our foods before we even purchase and prepare it (in processed foods and foods we

12

southfloridaparenting.com |

012_013 Nutri_Salt.indd 12

get from restaurants). So adding more salt with the shaker is usually not necessary and will put you over your recommended amount for the day. The following foods are the main culprits of sodium in our diet:

» » »

Breads and rolls Deli meat

Pizza (limit the cheese and meats and add more vegetables)

»

Poultry (the amount of sodium varies based on how it is prepared)

» »

Canned soup

Fast food sandwiches and hamburgers (instead, order ½ a sandwich and a side salad or steamed vegetables)

How do you know how much sodium is in your food? Reading the Nutrition Facts label can help you control your sodium intake. The milligrams (mg) of sodium are listed and can vary between products and brands. When at the grocery store, take the time to compare labels to help you make the healthiest choice. You may see terms like “sodium-free,” “reduced sodium” and “no salt added” on food labels to help you. You can also look at the ingredient list to identify sources of sodium: sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium nitrate, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, monosodium glutamate (MSG). If these ingredients are among

the first few listed, that indicates there is a larger amount of it than ingredients listed farther down, and therefore it might be a product you want to leave on the shelf.

Sea Salt vs. Table Salt Sea salt has become widely popular and many people have felt the need to make the switch from table salt. While it is true that sea salt is less processed, has a stronger flavor and contains minerals like magnesium, there is little difference in the sodium content. Both contain the same percent of sodium by weight; however since the crystal size is often larger in sea salt, less will fit in the same space as table

salt. Make sure to read the Nutrition Facts label, rather than just reading the claims on the package. Don’t use more sea salt because it supposedly contains less sodium. Sea salt is not necessarily a healthier alternative; the small amount of minerals it contains can easily be obtained from other foods. The choice between the two would be best left to taste preference.

Low-Sodium Seasonings Herbs and spices are flavorful additions to foods that can be used instead of salt. If you are not used to using these kinds of seasonings, you may want to do some experimenting to see what tastes you prefer.

»

Sweet spices - cinnamon, cloves, garlic, nutmeg, allspice

»

Savory spices - black pepper, curry powder, dill, ginger, cumin

» »

Spicy spices - cayenne pepper

Herbs - basil, parsley, oregano, sage, thyme, cilantro, pepper

Several brands of seasonings are also available that are low-sodium or sodiumfree. People of all ages need to monitor their sodium intake. Children are consuming more sodium than they need, which puts them at risk for high blood pressure and developing heart disease later in life. As a family, work on eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low-fat, low-sodium cheeses and limit the intake of processed foods and salty snacks.

Protecting Your Child from Online Predators By Dr. Sara Rivero-Conil

Most parents warn a young child not to accept candy from a stranger or get into an unknown car for a ride to school. But before giving your son or daughter a mobile phone, tablet or computer, you should sit down with them and discuss the hazards of today’s online lifestyles, beginning with computer viruses, identity theft and other scams. But the greatest danger for your child can be a sexual predator who engages your child in an online conversation in order to obtain personal information and photos. By sending friendly texts or emails, playing videogames, joining chat rooms or posting to social media sites like Facebook, predators try to build an emotional connection with children. Using a false identity, they can masquerade as another child, an older teenager, a therapist or even a police officer. In informing parents about the dangers, the FBI says predators try to seduce their targets through attention, affection and even gifts. Then, they try to overcome a child’s inhibitions by gradually introducing sexual photos or suggestions into their conversations. They may ask the child to send nude photos or try to arrange a face-to-face meeting without the parents’ knowledge. Such an encounter – whether online or in person – can leave your child with psychological damage or long-lasting emotional scars. It’s common for young victims to become depressed and withdrawn or angry and abusive to others. A child might stop caring about school or give up on sports, music or another favorite activity. If you notice a significant change in behavior – which can occur for many different reasons – talk with your child about what’s happening, listen carefully and avoid being judgmental. Then, get professional counseling if necessary so that treatment can begin as soon as possible.

TIPS FOR PARENTS The FBI has several suggestions to help children avoid being victimized by an online predator: Talk with your children regularly about their online friends and activities. Ask about the games they play online and their favorite social media sites. If something seems odd about their responses, trust your instincts and try to get more information about what they are not telling you. Tell children not to respond to texts or emails from strangers, or download photos from an unknown source. Don’t let young children use chat rooms. Even teens should only use monitored chat rooms, such as those set up by their schools and teachers. Keep your child’s tablet or computer in a common area of the house, rather than in a bedroom. It is much more difficult for a predator to establish a relationship with your child if the computer screen is easily visible. Sit down with your child from time to time when he or she is online. If your child quickly closes a window or objects to your presence, try to find out what is being hidden. Ask your children to tell you immediately if anything that happens online makes them feel uncomfortable or frightened. Provide

»

» » » » »

them with open lines of communication so that they don’t feel judged or reprimanded.

If these precautions fail and your kids do meet an online predator, don’t blame them for being a victim. Take immediate action to block any further contact, get in touch with the local police, and obtain any online documentation including email, website addresses and chat logs. Since children today spend much of their free time with their phones, tablets and laptops, you need to be sure they understand the risks, as well as the rewards, of online relationships. Dr. Rivero-Conil is a state-licensed psychologist from the Division of Psychology at Miami Children’s Hospital, soon to be renamed Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Taking a

family ski trip This month is a great time to head to the mountains for a family ski adventure. The weather is usually warmer in March, and sunshine and a few degrees can mean the difference between a great day on the slopes and a miserable one, especially for younger family members not used to colder temperatures. And traveling during a school break means the whole family can ski together, giving you a chance to build memories that will last a lifetime. But skiing together as a family often means adjusting your expectations, because it is rare that family members ski at the same level. “Parents need to be prepared for skiing at their children’s level, that’s one of the big things,” said Heather Quarantillo, a mother and professional ski instructor at Copper Mountain Resort in Colorado. Even if everyone in the family has skied or snowboarded before, families with

16

southfloridaparenting.com |

016_021 SkiTRAV.indd 16

younger or less-experienced skiers could benefit from a family lesson – not just to teach the young skiers but also to teach the parents to help their kids. “Even though the instructor is able to coach multiple people at different levels, being at their children’s level and being in that lesson that’s catering to the kids first and foremost” is important, Quarantillo said. “Parents should look at that instructor as a resource so that they can learn how to successfully ski with their children.” She recommended that parents listen to the instructor’s words and watch the games and the things that he or she does with the kids so they can use the same techniques to help their children when they’re skiing without an instructor. Jesse Risch, an instructor at Copper Mountain’s Ski & Ride School, said the key to skiing with kids is really “just letting them know that they can do it by themselves, but at the same time, letting them

BY JENNIFER JHON

know that you are there to help them.” He excels at teaching Copper’s youngest skiers. “We don’t want to do something that’s too hard, especially on the first day when we’re 4 years old. It’s my job to show them how much fun it is and how they can still go down. I’m out there to help, but also to show them how cool it is that they can do something by themselves.” He teaches not just skiing, but also things like putting on skis. “Understanding to go under and click, squish the bug, however you want to think about it – she was able to do that by herself. And that’s cool to see them excited. … ‘Look what I just did, by myself.’ I’m still here to help you, that what I’m here for, but look at that, how cool is that?” He said skiing with kids involves a lot of give and take. “If we spend the whole run with a lot of guidance, all their weight is on you, it will sometimes lead them to believe that they can do that by themselves.

family » travel So when I say ‘give and take,’ I mean, ‘OK, look, I will help you ski down this part, but I want you to ski down to me by yourself on the next part.’ ” Both instructors warned parents with younger skiers to arrange for proper instruction. “This is the age where we don’t want to build any bad habits, and sometimes that can happen,” Risch said. Teaching aids like ski harnesses should be used with caution, Quarantillo said, because they can work against the child. Harnesses “teach them that someone’s going to pull back on them when they need to stop and puts them in exactly the opposite position that they would be using to control their own sliding and stopping, instead of teaching the children to use their own feet and their own bodies to control where they’re turning and stopping.” Harnesses can be useful when they’re used effectively, Quarantillo said, “but more often than not, we see families up higher on the mountain than they should be, the children on a harness. The child is going straight, and the parent is trying to pull back on them to slow them down. It’s then a disastrous situation where the child only wants to go straight.” When ski instruction is done well and the children are taught to how to turn and stop from the very beginning, kids can usually learn in the first half-day, she said. “Skiing together as a family is so rewarding,” Quarantillo said, especially when families take the steps required to ski well together, such as a private lesson. “You don’t know how to ski with your kids until you do it, until you do some trial and error and get some experience. Skiing with an instructor takes out so much of that trial and error,” she said. Above all, Risch said, parents need to remember to have fun. “It’s still just skiing. A lot of times – too often – I see parents pushing their kids too much. I’m here to push them a healthy amount and tell them that they can do things outside of their comfort zone, but at the same time, we’re not going to go up on a blue run on our first day of skiing, cause what’s the point? We’re still trying to have fun.” He urged parents to use the resources

available to them at resorts. “I understand that a lot of parents, they want their kids to be able to ski with them, they want to be at that point.” But kids who are 4, 5, 6, even 10 years old, may not be ready for that. “That’s why mountains have ski schools,” he said. “That’s why I do it, because I want you to be at that point where you can ski with your kids without having them be the kid that goes straight down the hill, and it’s not fun for anybody. “We want to progress at a level that’s safe, at a level that’s still fun, and it’s not anything that’s going to make us – as a 6-year-old – scared.”

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Getting organized to go skiing is much harder than going skiing itself, and it isn’t that much fun. Families must get to the resort, get their rental gear and get lift tickets before getting out on the snow, and that process can be challenging. “Once you get skis on, that’s where the fun begins,” Copper Mountain ski instructor Heather Quarantillo says. Families should go in with the right attitude, aware that everything is going to take a little longer than you’d want it to, she said. Parents should make sure their kids are wellfueled and well-hydrated, and discuss the process with them. Let everyone know that the beginning part is hard, but it pays off. Having the clothing you need to stay warm will allow families to enjoy the slopes more. “Good snow clothing that keeps the cold out and mittens that are truly water repellant make a big difference,” Quarantillo said. “Parents sometimes overlook that a little bit. They send their kids out in mittens that you can play in, and they get soaked right away. Investing in gear that will last and do its job … it really ensures that the children are going to have fun, and they’re not going to be cold.” Helmets and goggles are a must for snow sports, as well as sunscreen. Finally, when skiing with the kids, put them first, Quarantillo said. Help your children get their skis and equipment on before you put your skis on. “Make sure they are all ready to go, and then you focus on you. That way you don’t have to remove your skis and get down on your knees and clean the snow off of their boots,” she said. “It’s just what we do all the time as moms, anyway. We’re always trying to get our kids set up, and then we hurry up after them.”

CALL TO

CODE BY MARGARET SAGARESE

B

arbie is in hot water. And it’s not because she’s lounging, bikini-clad, in a hot tub flirting with Ken. Nope. Barbie, the protagonist of the book, “Barbie: I Can Be A Computer Scientist,” landed in the middle of an Internet firestorm because she failed miserably in the computer skills department. In the Mattel-sponsored book, Barbie acts inept, the antithesis of being a computer scientist. She calls in Brian and Steve to not only bring her game idea into reality, but to fix a virus on her and sister, Skipper’s, PC. In other words, Barbie can play video games, she can even hatch a good idea for one, but she doesn’t have the computer skill – namely, coding – to create a game herself. After Barbie’s technological faux pas and the uproar that went viral, Mattel apologized and pulled the book from the market. This scandal put the spotlight on coding and reignited the disparity between the numbers of males vs. females employed in the computer industry. If you are a parent and you want to equip your son and your daughter with the tools to succeed, computer science and coding need to be on your agenda. Learning to code is to the computer what learning the ABCs is to language. In China, 100 percent of kids from kindergarten through 12th grade learn coding, according to James Gwertzman, chief evangelist of the nonprofit Code.org. In the U.S., only 5 percent of kids learn to code, he said. Furthermore, skip ahead to 2020, and there will be an estimated 1.4 million computer-programming-related jobs in the U.S. and only about 400,000 qualified candidates to fill this need. People are talking about how important and how much fun learning to code can be. Last year, two 14-yearold boys from Atherton, Calif., founded Menlo App Academy. Matt Dillabough and Max Colbert set their geeky minds to teaching other kids how to code. Next they want to teach 25 teachers, who will teach 2,500 educators, who in turn can fan out and spread the value of computer programming to kids nationwide. Make no mistake, coding is for girls, too, and for girls of color, said Kimberly Bryant, who characterized herself as a “nerdy girl” growing up in 1970s Memphis, Tenn. She graduated from Vanderbilt College on scholarship with a degree in electrical engineering and built a career in companies such as DuPont, Genentech and Merck. Bryant characterized herself as the female surrounded by males. But in 2010, her daughter, Kai, attended a game-development camp and found herself the only girl of color, although there were a few girls. Realizing that not enough had changed in a generation, Bryant founded Black Girls Code, a San Francisco nonprofit offering weekend workshops and summer camps in programming, robotics, web design and mobile app development for girls as young as 7.

Computer science nurtures a triumvirate of sought-after skills in today’s world: problem-solving, logic and creativity. If you want your child to get on the learnto-code bandwagon, here are some things that you can do:

» At parent-teacher conference time, discuss with your child’s teacher how you can find technology opportunities for your child at school. »

Log on www.code.org to spread the message that America needs kids who acquire this skill. A video titled “What Schools Teach” features giants from Bill Gates to NBA star Chris Bosh praising the skill. It has been viewed 20 million times and counting. The site hosts a movement that advocates spending an hour to learn to code and enables you to click on a tutorial to do so. Recently the nonprofit teamed with Disney Interactive to create a tutorial based on “Frozen.” Anna and Elsa make ice fractals and skating patterns using basic coding skills. (www.code.org/frozen)

» Sign your child up for a summer camp to learn coding. Search “technology summer camp” and your city. While investigating the summer camp option, ask a few questions: Do teachers have a professional background? (Keep in mind that many of the teachers might be college-age kids. That is not necessarily a liability since these young men and women have excellent skills and may relate well with kids.) What is the studentteacher ratio? How is the class structured? “At a recent tech weekend, a guy was showing a fairly large group of kids (4th grade, maybe 5th or 6th) how html works. Most of the kids were not paying attention,” says Dave Noderer, a Deerfield Beach software developer and organizer of the annual South Florida Code Camp, “as it was not interactive, and none of them had computers to try it on.”

Be advised that some summer camp programs are expensive. Inquire about scholarships that may be available, or find out if rates are scaled according to your family income. Not all programs are pricey, though. The YMCA has a program called Coder Dojo that has reasonable rates or no costs.

Read a children’s book

Check out a coding magazine called “Help Kids Code.” It’s geared for 10-year-olds who want to learn to code, but also for kids who don’t necessarily want to learn to code but do want to know more about all things computer. Recent articles span topics such as recognizing and selecting computer devices, programming and problem solving. The magazine is issued 10 times a year and costs $12 annually. The editor said the writing is easy to understand and fun-filled and that the resources and information can also help parents, teachers and adults who want to learn more. Go to www.helpkidscode.com for more information.

HERE ARE A FEW TITLES TO TRY: » DK Workbooks: Computer Coding by DK Publishing » Super SCRATCH Programming Adventure by the LEAD Project » Python for Kids: A Playful Introduction to Programming (ages 10 and up) by Majed Marji » Adventures in Raspberry Pi by Carrie Anne Philbin (9 fun projects for ages 11-15)

Consider a DIY computer kit. The Kano company sells a $150 build-it-yourself computer for kids. Think a tech take on the old chemistry set. It includes storybook style instructions and a wireless keyboard, memory card, dongle, speaker and cables to connect to an external monitor. (No age is specified as it depends on your child’s level of skill.) The goal is to make kids create technology, not just consume it. Find a local computer club. Girlswhocode. com is a national nonprofit organization for 6th- to 12th-grade girls dedicated to

computer science education, the tech industry and exposure. Clubs exist nationwide, including at West Regional Library in Plantation and at Coral Gables High school. A seven-week Summer Immersion program is offered in Miami for high school sophomores and juniors. Another organization, #Yeswecode.org, teaches low-opportunity youth about coding and computer science. Join the Lego leagues (which host sliding age group events.) www.usfirst.org Explore the South Florida Digital Alliance at sfdigitalalliance.org This nonprofit is dedicated to eliminating the digital divide among communities and providing many educational opportunities. As you can see, the call to coding is spreading, and the voices to help your child get onboard are getting louder. I suppose that’s the silver lining in Barbie’s hot seat.

kids see that we have had disappointments, too, and we are OK. We survived.” Lahey also said it’s important to create a spirit of taking risks within your household. Set goals together and let your children see that it’s OK to try something that is outside of their comfort zone and yours. If failure occurs, Lahey said, then your child can see that rejection is something that everyone goes through. So you’ve laid the groundwork at home, but your child is still feeling like a failure. Now what? “The first thing we need to do is listen and not react,” Rajan said. “We have to make sure that we don’t overreact ourselves and that we recognize that this is a very small part of our child’s life, and that this too shall pass.” Also, make sure that you are not trying to solve the problem for your child. Do not tell your daughter that she was the best one in the audition for the play and that she should have gotten Dorothy, Rajan said. Lahey, who has appeared as a parenting and education expert on The Today Show, Fox and Friends and NPR, among others – said, “You are not doing your kids any favors by telling them that they deserve this. “This isn’t the message we want to send our kids,” she said. This tells your child that you value him or her because he or she has received these honors. You want to say to your children that you value them because of their efforts. “That is the message that our kids are not hearing and need to be hearing a lot more,” Lahey said. So can rejection be a good thing? It depends, Lahey said. “The kind of rejection when you get feedback about how to get better is invaluable,” she said. “If there is feedback, use it and run with it.” Dr. Rajan, who works with children through play therapy, said, “People have different strengths and different weaknesses. And it is character-building to experience a rejection. Whether it’s a bad grade in a class or not being in with the right clique – it can be a blessing.”

our daughter didn’t get the part in the school play. Or maybe your son didn’t make the Varsity soccer team for the second year in a row. While your initial reaction might be to try to solve the problem by marching down to the teacher’s or coach’s office to ask what he or she was thinking, take a deep breath and don’t react hastily. Your child will be fine without your getting involved, as long as you’ve taken the proper steps at home. It’s important to lay the groundwork before these times of rejection occur in our children’s lives by showing them how we deal with rejection in our own lives, said Dr. Carole Rajan, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist whose private practice is based in Palm Beach Gardens. “We really need to be paying attention about what rejection means to us and how we talk about our process when we get excluded or lose our job,” Rajan said. Our children “are looking at us as their role models, so we have to be aware of what messages we are giving our kids at a very early age.” If we are sending our children messages that we are OK when we experience disappointment, then our children can also learn how to move on when faced with their own feelings of failure. Educator, writer and speaker Jessica Lahey, whose forthcoming book “The Gift of Failure: Why Parents Need to Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed,” agrees. “It’s all about the modeling,” Lahey said. “It’s important that

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD COPE WITH FEELINGS OF FAILURE 1. Be a good role model. Handle your own rejection with grace. 2. Set goals together and take risks. 3. Listen to your child when he or she is first faced with a sense of rejection. 4. Find out what your child’s fears are and address them. 5. Do not try to solve the problem for him or her. 6. hoosing the right swim school for your child requires more research than you might realize. These days, finding the best instructor goes far beyond being certified in CPR and having taken swim-teacher training courses. And while group lessons can be highly effective for some children, others really need that one-on-one lesson time. Sue Mackie, the executive director of the U.S. Swim School Association and a swim instructor with more than 30 years experience, is an expert on what parents need to look for when choosing a swim lesson program for their children. “Deciding whether your children would benefit from group lessons or private lessons really depends on the child,” Mackie said. “[At a private school], the ratio of teachers to students tends to be very different than that of a parks and rec program. Group lessons in a private swim school tend to be three or four children, while private lessons are oneon-one.” Mackie said parents should visit three to four swim schools and programs and see which one makes them feel most comfortable before committing to a place. “Parents should observe a lesson for their child’s age group before taking their child there,” Mackie said. “And don’t be afraid to ask questions. All children learn differently, and while some children may thrive in a group lesson situation and gain confidence from seeing other kids their age jumping in the pool, others may not respond so well to peer pressure. It’s important to find that school that’s the most comfortable fit for your family and schedule.” Since group lessons tend to be cheaper, many parents on a budget opt for group instruction over private. However, even on a tighter budget, Mackie said supplementing a group program with one or two private lessons can make a difference.

Regardless of how well a child swims, Mackie said, children should never be left unsupervised around a pool or open water. “Active supervision is essential,” Mackie said. “A lot of times, you’ll see parents sitting around a hotel pool while their children are swimming, and the parents will have their heads down texting or reading a magazine. This is not safe.” Special needs children should also start swimming lessons sooner, Mackie said. “Special needs children can definitely learn to swim, and many autistic children are drawn to the water, so it’s especially important to get them swimming lessons,” Mackie said. “It’s important to teach all children from an early age to respect the water.” So how soon is too soon to start lessons? And is it more beneficial to take lessons for 30 minutes twice a week or 10-15 minutes every day? “There’s a whole lot of controversy out there regarding this, and it depends on what age group you’re talking about,” Mackie said. “[In twice-a-week lessons for 30 minutes], over four to six weeks, the child can gain the skills they need to be safer around the water. Once or twice a week is enough to give the kids a great start, and hopefully the parents are also supplementing with some time in the pool on their own. Babies can start swim lessons at 6 months and start with learning how to roll on their backs and get comfortable in the water. Mommy-and-me swim classes are a great way to start that.” Mackie likens swimming lessons to piano lessons. “You wouldn’t send your child for piano lessons for six weeks and just quit,” Mackie said. “You build a foundation, [and] the child continues to grow and develop stronger skills. Swimming is similar. if you start lessons at 6 months old, by the time a child is a toddler, they can be very proficient in the water. But I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to never leave a child alone around water without a parent. Always have some eyes on them.” For a list of swim schools in your area, visit USswimschools.org.

Summer camp offers all kinds of fun and character-building experiences for kids of any age. Whether you’re looking for a few hours of entertainment or weeks of intentional skill-building for your child, you can find it at camp. Age 0 - 5 Day camps offer the perfect opportunity for young kids to experience time away from mom and explore new activities. Camp for preschool children focuses on free play, sharing with others, group games (inside and outside), and simple arts and crafts. If you’re sending your child to camp for the first time, make sure the schedule matches her personality and routine to prevent a stressful experience. Does there need to be naptime? Should your child be potty trained to attend? Would your child adjust more easily by starting with a half-day camp instead of full day? Are there appropriate breaks for snacks and changes in activity? It’s important to find out what the counselor-to-camper ratio is for children this age. You want to ensure your child will be adequately cared for with a friendly, well-staffed team. You also want to determine if the counselors are trained to help with issues common to preschoolers, including separation anxiety, potty training and temper tantrums. The best place to find camps for young children is through day cares, churches, nursery schools and local elementary schools. Specialty camps also abound through gymnastic centers, music schools and

sporting centers. Consider your child’s interests and find a camp that fits to give your preschool child a chance to make new friends and explore new experiences.

Age 6 - 11 Elementary-age children thrive at camp, whether it’s day camp or stay-away camp. It’s the perfect solution to sibling squabbles and long summer days. But it pays to do your research and find the right fit for your child. Camps for this age range from sports camps to music camps to academic camps to church camps. Don’t let the variety intimidate you as you research; start with the interests of your child and ask friends and neighbors to give opinions on camps their kids have attended. At this age, our kids have had the most fun at away camps that gave them the opportunity to try activities not available at home, such as zip lining, archery and rock wall climbing, in addition to swimming, arts and crafts, and campfire sing-alongs with friends. Kids gain independence as they make decisions and meet new friends outside of the comforts of home. They gain self-confidence in trying new activities. And they learn to appreciate the beauty of nature as they unplug from technology. Although they may experience periods of homesickness, they learn to navigate their feelings with caring camp counselors and new friends. Specialty camps close to home also help kids explore new hobbies or create opportunities for parents and kids to enjoy camp together. A mother-daughter sewing camp or father-son golfing camp allows great bonding time while developing a skill enjoyed by both. If your child has never experienced camp, start with a day camp or send a friend along for an away camp. It’s important that their first camp experience be a good one. If you find it wasn’t a perfect fit, try a different one next year. But don’t give up on the beauty and benefits of camp for elementary-age children.

Age 12 - 15 Tweens and teens have better focus than younger children and benefit from camps

that more closely match their interests and personalities. Sports and music camps are great for this age and help kids advance athletic skills and enhance musical talent. Academic camps offer youth advancedlearning opportunities in subjects they might want to explore for long-term focus. And church camps offer character-building and self-awareness experiences not learned in school. Camps provide a safe place for teens and tweens to hang out while parents work during summer break. Not yet able to drive or find a summer job, kids this age too often allow technology to rule or walk into unsupervised trouble unless parents intentionally seek out creative options. Junior high and high schools provide information for local camps worth investigating. It’s also easy to scour the Internet for camps that match your child’s interests. Some camps provide certification such as lifeguard training or first-aid certification that can enable your youth to successfully find a job upon completion. Encourage your youth to research camps with you to find one that fits. When kids attend camp, they develop resilience and flexibility that benefits them later in life. An article in Psychology Today, “Creating Advantage in College” by Steve Baskin, parallels the experiences of summer camp and the adjustment of college. He said kids work through similar adjustments at camp and college, such as “being away from home and your traditional support system (family, friends, familiar places) and dealing with large amounts of uncertainty. (What will classes require, how will I fit in socially, can I deal with this new roommate?)” Baskin said kids who find success working through these challenges at camp adjust easier when presented with the transition to college. Overall, summer camp offers unique experiences and character-building opportunities. Whether your child is 2 or 15, camp is a great place to find adventure and make memories in the process. Gayla Grace seeks out sports camps each summer for her five children and loves to spend her time writing while they’re playing.

with your kids Visit a museum. Springs Break is a great time to explore culture, the arts, technology and science with your kids at any of a number of museums geared for children in South Florida.

Go to a nature center or zoo. Get in touch with your wild side with a day among the animals.

Cool off at a water park/ water playground. County parks and waterparks usually open daily during spring break, and temperatures are often warm enough at the end of March to make a water day a great way to stay cool.

Participate in a library program. Libraries offer everything from exercise and crafts classes to science and technology workshops. Some, like the Broward County Main Library, have 3D printers available to patrons for free to test their coding and creativity.

See a play or stage performance/rehearsal. Give the kids a dose of culture with a live stage performance. Many theaters in South Florida have programs geared for kids, especially during the break.

See a matinee movie or movie in the park. Theaters often have matinee specials, and some even have special kids series during school breaks. Many cities also have movies in the park on select nights with open seating under the stars, which is a great way to experience a film as a family.

Have a picnic in a park. A picnic is a great way to get outside on a beautiful spring day, and many parks have picnic tables and grills set up near playgrounds. Most county parks are free on weekdays, as well.

RESPECTABLE SPECTACLES There was sadly a time when wearing glasses equated to getting teased. Not anymore, thanks in part to Optiwow President Ivonne Goldstein and her husband, Dr. Roberto Warman, a pediatric neuroophthalmologist, who own an optical shop at Miami Children’s Hospital in Miami and recently launched Optiwow.com. “Miraflex is definitely the most recognized brand-name for toddlers,” Goldstein said. “It comes in tons of color. As they start growing, they become interested in brand names such as Nike, Ray Ban and Lily Pulitzer,” Goldstein said. “For 2015, the geek chic is still very popular with kids.” But the burning question on every parent’s mind is how soon is too soon to know if your child needs glasses? “The Official Academy of Ophthalmology recommends checking vision between 5 and 6 years old,” Goldstein said. “But the child’s pediatrician checks them sooner with every well visit. Kids eyes develop until age 8, so it’s very important to detect eye problems sooner than

Ivonne Goldstein

later. It makes eyes stronger.” For children without insurance who may be in need, Goldstein and her husband do whatever they can to get a child glasses. “Getting a child the right pair of glasses

does so much more than just make them see better,” Goldstein said. “A kid with proper-fitting glasses will have a better selfesteem. If the glasses are too tight or too big, the child will likely just take them off, which is never good.” Goldstein prides herself on having the largest selection of frames possible for children, tweens and teens. “Our children’s eye-wear assortment gets better every year,” Goldstein said. “We have about 400 frames in our shop, but much more on our website, and I’m very picky with what I’ll stock. Ha ppy R ea di n g National Read Across America Day is held annually on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. My daughter, Jessie, has read just about PATRICK HEMPFING all of Dr. Seuss’ books. Jessie loves to read. When it’s time to begin her homework, she always does her reading first. However, getting her to tackle her spelling homework is a challenge. I think she’d rather clean her room, give up dessert, or even the dreaded “take a nap,” than knock out her spelling assignment. One of the reasons Jessie loves to read may be that for more than five years, I’ve taken her to our local library for “Reading to Rover.” This program really gets kids excited about reading. Children read books to therapy dogs while the dogs’ handlers look on and offer help or encouragement. Jessie has read to all kinds of dogs – huge ones and tiny ones, purebreds and mixed breeds. The kids enjoy petting the dogs, and reading to them is more fun and less intimidating than reading to people. Many South Florida libraries and the Broward County Humane Society offer similar reading programs. Check your library or Humane Society website for more information. Monday evening, as I watched Jessie read to a beautiful German shepherd, I remembered when she was a toddler, sitting in my lap on the floor, petting the dogs while I read. I always kept one eye on her to make sure that she didn’t grab a fistful of fur. As she got older, I sat on the floor beside her while she read simple picture books to the dogs. Now I watch from a nearby chair as she nestles up next to the

a dad's view dog, petting it while she reads at a speed that is probably faster than the dog can comprehend. Inspired by Monday’s visit to the library, Jessie devised a way to read to Sadie, our 14-week-old puppy who doesn’t like to sit still. Jessie dug out her kindergarten nap mat and put it on the kitchen floor. Then, determined to keep Sadie on the mat while reading to her, she put Sadie on a leash and tied the leash to the refrigerator door. The plan worked, and Sadie kept Jessie company as she read the whole chapter book. We’re hoping that Sadie will eventually become one of the great therapy dogs at Reading to Rover. Jessie is taking steps to ensure that Sadie will be ready, even if the library implements a dress code. She dresses Sadie in a variety of outfits and accessories, most recently a flowing blond wig. If you see a sheltie puppy walking down the street wearing a cheerleading costume, three necklaces and a hair bow, it’s probably ours. We all realize the importance of reading well. Many sources contribute to a child’s reading proficiency – parents, grandparents, teachers, and even therapy dogs and their handlers. So as we approach another Read Across America Day, take a minute to thank those who help children learn to read. Before leaving the library Monday evening, my passionate reader checked out more than a dozen books to read at home. Now if only I could get a therapy dog for spelling. Come to think of it, maybe I have one. Jessie set a new speed record for finishing her spelling homework when I told her that if there was time left before bed, she could take a bath with Sadie. I may be on to something. This could work for math, too. I just might end up with the cleanest dog in town. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments.

The Value of Mess: hands-on art, science and nature BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S. It’s been said that sensory play is “food for the brain.” Alison Gopnik, a researcher at UC-Berkley and author of The Scientist in the Crib and The Philosophical Baby, says that “scientists are big children.” When you see your child spilling liquids, dumping buckets of sand and scattering piles of Cheerios, rest assured they are scientists, and they are “lighting up the brain.” They are creating neural pathways in the brain, establishing patterns and associations that they will use in later years for complex, abstract thinking. Mess? How else can a scientist predict if the liquid flows in rivers off the table or pools at the edge, only to be splashed at different angles and heights? How else can the craftsman understand the right consistency and texture to create the bricks and mortar for a house or fortress? How else can the NASA engineer design a spaceship with the necessary arc to counterbalance the gravitational pull of the sun? Science is messy. Learning is hands-on, trial-anderror, hypothesis testing, theory-generating engagement. Learning is synthesis and discovery and just a little mess along the way.

Not all kids are messy; some prefer order while others revel in temporary chaos. Each child, just like any creative chef, artist or scientist, finds his or her own style. Yet each one needs the tools of the trade. Children need the texture and the complexity of real stuff. The challenge for parents is to create opportunities for multi-sensory, hands-on fun. Then, like any good parent-scientist, observe your child building confidence and problem-solving skills one mess at a time.

Sensory Enrichment Grown-ups go to spas and gourmet restaurants to be immersed in the luxury of multi-sensory experiences - the aromatherapy, the candlelight, the rare tastes. Sensory experiences are everywhere, all the time. It all starts with looking, feeling, tasting, smelling. Start in the kitchen: natural herb pots, the spice cabinet (including flavored extracts), the food, the greens, the batters, the puddings and frostings, the dips (guacamole, salsa, tzatziki, hummus), the shape of pasta, the texture of rice and grains, and on and on. It’s easy to turn all those easy-to-find ingredients into fabulous multi-sensory play:

»

Texture bins (from dish pans to storage-bin size, floor height or table height) filled with rice, flour, oatmeal, whipped cream, cooked spaghetti, assorted beans (for older than 3) or colored water or soapy water. Your child will have endless hours of self-directed, brain-developing science activities Finger-painting with edibles or homemade finger-paint on different surfaces, from shiny foil to bubble wrap Painting and printing using interesting objects - pastry brushes, forks, potato mashers, straws, fly swatters or even vegetables Collage making using natural herbs, nature objects, cinnamon shaking or candy sprinkles Making textured and aromatic play-doughs using oatmeal, spices, flavored extracts. Make “goop” and “slime” and discover the different properties of different substances. Immerse your child in discovery through questions - what, why, how, when.

stages » child Or simply create a new discovery experience for your child in the high chair or the Learning Tower (from “One Step Ahead – for active toddlers”) while you cook. Let your child peel, poke, pound the foods you are using in meals. Let your child “help” – prepare salads, mix ingredients, scoop servings. Slow down for language, and your child will get a triple learning bonus.

Focus on Art-Cooking-Science-Nature Art, cooking, science and nature are the four cornerstones of your child’s daily learning. Children are naturals in all four areas if they are given the green light to explore and use their skills. From bath time to walking through the yard, there’s always something new to discover. Children don’t know, however, that natural learning, scientific observation, and hands-on discovery are essential to building brilliant minds. Children need parents

and grown-ups who value their questions and appreciate their discoveries. If mess means taking something apart, digging under the rock or collecting piles of “useless” objects, so be it. Parents need to make time and space in busy schedules for experimenting and for thinking.

Tips for multi-sensory play Good science requires structure and order, too. Here are a few sanity-saving, joymaking tips: Support your child’s unique style of play, from watchful and needing time to “get acquainted” with new materials to all-in, up-to-the-elbows exploration. Don’t insist on aprons or painting shirts unless your child enjoys the novelty. Encourage flexibility and mistake-making by reassuring children that everything is washable. Contain the mess. Define the area with drop cloths and/or create visible boundaries of what’s off-limits.

Plan messy play before baths or on sunny afternoons when you can simply hose down the messy child or the messy area. Designate enough time so you aren’t trying to fit in something else or rushing off somewhere important. Create clean-up routines for your child and for the area. Hand washing is nonnegotiable. Neither is clean-up time. Mess means young minds at work! Happy learning!
