Learning to be grateful A lot of emphasis is put on teaching kids about gratitude during the holiday season, and for good reason. My shopping trips have become 10 times harder since stores started stocking holiday merchandise. It started with Halloween candy and quickly progressed to Christmas décor, JENNIFER which even in the absence of toys reminds my kids that their favorite time of year is coming. And if toys are present, forget about it. But lessons about being grateful for what you have – instead of constantly yearning (and whining for) what you don’t have – apply to humans of every age. Every parent knows the best way to raise your child is to model the behavior you want to see in them. (Say please, use nice words, be patient, don’t ever call

anyone “stupid,” etc.) This applies to gratitude, as well. That means I need to remember how amazing it is not to have a car payment and point that out to my son when he wishes I had a newer/ better/cooler car. It means appreciating the fact that my JHON son gets a free education at a good school where people care about him, instead of grumbling about the daily headache of the dropoff loop. It means taking comfort in my friends and family and celebrating small successes instead of letting one disappointment ruin my mood and my day. Gratitude makes all the difference in the world, because it helps me focus on what is good and gives me reason for joy. When I am thankful, I am less envious,

less overwhelmed, more loving toward others and more at peace – and my kids see that. I wish I could always be my most optimistic, my most patient, my most generous, my most kind – all the qualities that gratitude fosters in me. But I’m not. Still, I’ll be grateful for the times when I do the right thing and hope for an even more thankful heart tomorrow.

MUMMY UNDERGOES EXAM AT WEST PALM BEACH HOSPITAL By Marisa Gottesman, Sun Sentinel

A mummy from the new exhibit “Afterlife: Tombs and Treasures of Ancient Egypt” received a CT scan in early October in hopes of determining the cause of death. The 2,100-year-old mummy was definitely one of St. Mary’s Medical Center’s oldest patients — and its quietest. This 2,100-year-old mummy received a CT The mummified girl, thought to have been between 4 and 9 years old when she died, will be scan at St. Mary's Medical Center in an attempt on display at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium as part of “Afterlife: Tombs and Trea- to discover the cause of death. The mummified body of a female child is part of "Afterlife: sures of Ancient Egypt” exhibit. Tombs and Treasures of Ancient Egypt." She is young when it comes to mummies, exhibit curator Carolyn Routledge said. And she still MARK RANDALL/SUN SENTINEL PHOTO had several baby teeth in her mouth. But not surprisingly, the mummy had no organs. It was a common ritual to remove organs before the mummification process took place. Mummy Girl is believed to have lived sometime between 30 B.C. and 200 to 300 A.D, which is about the time the Romans were taking over. She will be on exhibit, with more than 200 ancient artifacts and a couple of other mummies, through April 18 at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach. hiropractic care is a holistic, drug-free form of health care that thousands of people around the world use to get well and stay healthy naturally. While most people choose chiropractic care for themselves as adults, many are beginning to learn about the health benefits for infants and children, as well. Although chiropractic is extremely effective for pain relief, people continue to benefit from chiropractic care well after their aches and pains have diminished. Chiropractors can help with a number of common pediatric issues, including reflux, colic, chronic fluid in the ears, ear infections, torticollis, general fussiness/discomfort, latching/ breastfeeding issues, sleeping issues, bed wetting, constipation and general wellness. Regardless of the health complaint, the premise behind WHY we adjust a person is the same, no matter their age, size or shape. Our main goal is detecting spinal misalignments (subluxations), which are caused by physical, chemical and emotional stresses, starting from birth and accumulating over time. These stresses can depress the immune system and irri-

tate spinal nerves, causing a disconnect between the brain and body communicating properly. This leads to the spinal nerves functioning at less than 100 percent of their optimal level to your muscles, organs and entire body system. For example, the nerves that exit at the very top level of the spine (C1/atlas) affect many different parts of the head and neck, including the middle and inner ear. It is common for children who have chronic

fluid in their ears or recurring ear infections to also have a misaligned C1 vertebrae. When the misalignment is corrected by a gentle, specific adjustment, the nerves can send the proper messages to the inner and middle ear, allowing them to relax and drain properly. When the nervous system is clearly functioning, it’s better equipped to heal naturally. Often, the use of drugs or invasive procedures can be reduced or completely elimi-

nated when chiropractic healing begins. We use specialized techniques to safely analyze and gently adjust babies and children with a much lighter and more delicate approach than the regular adjustment an adult would receive. Benefits for the expectant mother are also plentiful. Removing the causes of stress in the spine and pelvis can allow for optimal spinal alignment and positioning of the baby for birth. If there is uterine tension, there is a greater chance that the baby may move into a posterior, transverse or breech position. This is a common reason why many women are forced into unwanted or unplanned C-sections. There are chiropractic techniques, including the Webster Technique, that encourage proper alignment of the pelvis and sacrum, which relieves intrauterine tension, allowing the baby to return to the headdown position. This affords the expectant mom the option of delivering vaginally. More information about the Webster Technique and prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care can be found at ICPA4kids.org. If you have questions, Dr. Tokar can be reached at 954-472-7975or at DrCarlyTokar@gmail.com. She sees patients at Markson Chiropractic in Plantation.

Don’t Overschedule Your Kids!

• Face Painting • Balloon Twisting • Cotton Candy • Games • Magic Show • and more!

By Sara Rivero-Conil, Psy.D.

Many South Florida parents put a great deal of energy into organizing their children’s lives: Homework, soccer, play dates, scouting, music lessons, church activities ... the list can seem endless. So it’s not surprising if you feel worn out by driving your children from one after-school or weekend activity to another.

Specialize in full party packages! PARTY PACKAGES AVAILABLE 954-302-9149 allinonekidsentertainment@hotmail.com Facebook.com/allinonekidsentertainmentllc www.allinonekidsentertainment.com

If you’re an organizer who focuses on scheduling your children’s lives, take a deep breath, step back for a minute, and ask yourself a few questions: • Is my child enjoying all these activities? • Does my child have enough unscheduled “downtime” to unwind from the busy days? • Does my child ever feel bored? • Does my child ever take the initiative to organize his or her own activities? If the answer to these questions is “no,” then it’s time to rethink your role as a parent. You may be overscheduling your child, making too many decisions or have unrealistically high goals. If the daily activities are becoming stressful for your child rather than fun, then consider pruning the list. Children who are stressed may feel tired during the day or exhibit symptoms of anxiety or depression, which presents as irritability in many children. They may also undergo behavioral changes, such as over-eating or under-eating, as well as changes in sleep patterns. It’s important to remember that every child is different and take that into account when planning activities. One child might relish playing team sports or piano lessons, while another can’t wait for a practice session to end. Parents need to find a healthy balance for each child. Your child’s schedule could include time for homework, sports or fitness, social activities, an artistic interest like music or dance, and a regular “lights out” time for a good night’s sleep.

14

012_015 HealthNov.indd 14

Tips for parents Here are some other suggestions for enriching your child’s life without overdoing things: • Ask casual questions about different activities and listen carefully to your child’s answers. While every child has an occasional bad day, you should be able to tell if your child enjoys what he’s doing or not. • Be careful not to put your own desires ahead of your child’s. While you might love baseball or the violin, your child might enjoy doing something completely different. • Spend relaxed, peaceful time at home with your child. Take a walk, go to a park or prepare dinner together. Those spontaneous “un-organized” activities can be some of the most special moments in your child’s life. • Don’t try to keep your child occupied or entertained all the time. Give your son or daughter plenty of opportunities to create their own activities for themselves. • Don’t focus on how well your child performs in sports, artistic or academic activities. Remember that the goal is to have fun and nurture your child’s spirit, rather than to “win” at all costs. If your child is involved in competitive sports, focus on their efforts and teach them how to deal with a win as well as a loss. • Encourage your child to talk about any worries or fears about his or her activities. You may be able to reassure him or her, or talk to a coach, instructor or tutor if a problem seems to be developing. • Sit back and enjoy watching your child discover new interests and skills through their new activities.

Finally, allow your child to make his or her own choices and have some degree of control over life. That’s a good way to encourage healthy attitudes and behaviors that will strengthen your child throughout life. Get Kids Involved in Holiday Meal Preparation By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

Holidays are a family affair, and everyone should have a hand in making it a special time. As parents, we often feel overwhelmed and stressed about the decorations, cleaning the house for guests and, most importantly, preparing the food. This year, instead of trying to find ways to keep the kids occupied while you prepare holiday meals, get them involved in helping you. This can relieve a lot of stress and make the time more enjoyable for everyone. Each family member can take part in planning the meal by deciding what foods to have, making grocery lists and shopping. Depending on the age of your children, they can perform various tasks to help with meal preparation, baking and cooking, set up and clean up. Kneading bread, rolling out pie crust or cookie dough, using cookie cutters to cut out

you from having to stop what you are doing to think of new tasks, and it will keep everything and everyone organized and in their own space. You may need to help little ones, so allow yourself enough time for this. Children typically enjoy helping out in the kitchen and will feel proud having a hand in preparing your holiday meal. If they are hesitant to try new foods, this can be a way to interest them in different foods. Make this a fun time by playing games, such as guessing the name of the ingredients, stating ways the foods are good for your health, or naming their dish. This should be an enjoyable time to bond and create healthy habits for the family. Working together, you can start new traditions and help keep the current generation and the generations to come healthy and happy.

Amelia Island’s {small-town}

Southern charm

BY JULIE LANDRY LAVIOLETTE Special correspondent

ith a kiss of Southern charm in a graceful beach community, Amelia Island is a world away from glitzy South Florida. Luckily, it’s only a five-hour drive up the Sunshine State’s east coast, making this barrier island a welcome getaway for families looking for a beach holiday with a genteel flavor. This former home port to pirates and scallywags has developed into a welcoming locale that is

family » travel repeatedly named one of the Top 10 islands in the United States by Conde Naste Traveler. Home to towering oaks dripping with Spanish moss, the birth of the modern shrimping industry and endless varieties of cheese grits, Amelia Island offers many luxurious experiences without a snooty feel. We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton (www. ritzcarlton.com/AmeliaIsland), which has a relaxed, family-friendly air without skimping on sumptuous amenities. Young ones ages 5-12 can hang out in The Ritz Kids Club, which offers scheduled daytime crafts and activities in a jaunty, maritime-themed room, and a Parents Night Out. Star-gazing, pirate tuck-ins, storytime and S’more-making are held throughout the year. An indoor pool offers a break from the sun, and a lavishly-landscaped outdoor pool has a sand play area and splash pool. Just a short walk north from the resort’s beach boardwalk is Peter’s Point, an animal-friendly area where locals bring dogs to play in the surf. We were there to meet the folks from Stay’N Country Ranch (www.siteskins.net/stayncountryranch) for a horseback ride along the beach at one of

family » travel the few places in Florida that allows it. Kids 9 and older can ride, and those who are skittish can be connected to the guide with a lead line. Though none of us had any riding experience, my husband and kids and I mounted our horses in the parking lot and followed our guide to the surf, where we were treated to the sights and sounds of the crashing waves as we ambled down the beach. Back at the Ritz-Carlton, we changed into our swimsuits and headed to the saltwater pool, where attendants laid out crisp white towels on royal blue cushioned lounge chairs. A line of tween girls sipped virgin pina coladas in the indoor hot tub. A dad tossed a ball to his son in

the pool, and a girl used the resort’s sand toys to build a castle in the play area. That night, we dined at the resort’s Café 4750, where the Friday Endless Seafood Buffet included sautéed lobster tails and grilled beef tenderloin. The next morning, we drove to the north end of the island for an Eco Shrimping Tour with Amelia River Cruises and Charters (www.ameliarivercruises.com). During the two-hour journey, we glided by the old seaport town and the island’s paper mills before heading out to view saltwater marshes, oyster beds and neighboring islands. Captain Kevin entertained with tales of pirates and the shrimping industry before turning the microphone over to Jus-

tina, a marine scientist who pointed out local wildlife and flora. Dolphins crested near the boat as we neared the oyster beds, and Justina pointed out the spoonbills resting in a tree nearby. The crew lowered an otter trawl net in the water, and the kids were delighted with the catch – horseshoe crabs, brown shrimp, a tiny stingray and baby flounder, among other sea creatures. The bounty was deposited into small handheld aquariums that we passed around for a peek before releasing the creatures back into the water. Back on land, we dug into a hearty Southern lunch of fried shrimp, fish and traditional fixings (including cheese grits)

The Ritz-Carlton is a family-friendly, luxury option with a kids’ club, family activities and indoor and outdoor pools.

Amelia’s Wheels at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation resort (www.omniameliaislandplantation.com) offers a Segway tour of the grounds. If you haven’t done this before, it’s a lot easier than it looks, and it’s a lot of fun. After a training session and some practice, we headed through paved, winding walkways along velvety green golf courses, an extensive saltmarsh and an enchanting stretch of towering oak trees. For dinner, we opted for Slider’s Seaside Grill (www.slidersseaside.com) for its laid-back vibe, tableside beach playground and stunning views of the ocean from the second-story balcony. The hush puppies dipped in the house remoulade sauce were a favorite. There’s also live music nightly. Our last morning, we explored Centre Street, where quaint Victorian shops display a vintage vibe. We sat in a lovely, tree-covered patio at Café Karibo (www. cafekaribo.com) for Sunday brunch – delicate shrimp salad, a hearty shrimp and grits, house-baked muffins and one last dish of cheese grits. “We didn’t like it at all,” I joked with the server as she cleared our empty plates. As with most of Amelia Island, we savored every morsel. For information about Amelia Island, visit www.ameliaisland.com.

Producer: Message of ‘Maleficent’ more fitting for today’s girls BY ALYSSA MORLACCI

There are two sides to every story, and in Disney’s “Maleficent,” which comes out on DVD Nov. 4, the classic villain has the opportunity to relay her version of the fairytale “Sleeping Beauty.” The PG-rated movie grossed nearly $70 million during its opening weekend and stars Angelina Jolie as the tale’s notorious antagonist. Not only is the movie packed with action, spinning wheels, dragons and fairies, but as Executive Producer Don Hahn shared with South Florida Parenting during a phone interview, the film also gives families “something to chew on the next day and talk about.” Hahn, who produced Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Emperor’s New Groove,” to name a few, spoke about the film’s underlying themes that parents can discuss with their children and what Disney fans can expect moving forward. What drew you to this project? Don Hahn: Maleficent is such an interesting, complicated,

studios because the early versions of “Sleeping Beauty” sometimes had 12 fairies and sometimes five fairies. So to be able to take this story and take arguably one of the most popular Disney villains, or villainesses, and be able to invent a story was what was really exciting about it.

EXHIBITIONS

You chose a storyline that incorporates strong female leads as opposed to those used in the original “Sleeping Beauty” film. Why? DH: I think in 1959 when “Sleeping Beauty” was made by Walt, it was OK to say “Yes, you’re a woman, you’re a princess, you’re growing up, but yeah, your life’s not going to really start until your prince shows up.” And that’s a really terrible message to say and a terrible idea for a movie now. It’s certainly not something I would want to tell my daughter, and you want to be able to do something that captures the times we’re in. What does “Maleficent” capture about today? DH: We wanted to retell the “Sleeping Beauty” tale and also keep the same themes, but let the audience know that love can come from any different place. It doesn’t have to be a prince or a princess all the time. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, but love can be between a maternal character and a princess, or sisters, like in “Frozen.” You know, it can come from any place. And I think that kind of just grows out of the world we live in now and how we’ve changed culturally to accept that more and more. You mentioned “Frozen,” which also has two strong female leads. Can we expect more movies like these from Disney? DH: Nobody comes down from the front office and says, “Hey, we’ve got to make more female-based movies.” You know, there’s nothing like that. But we’re a product of our times in that we have families and sisters and daughters, and frankly the prince and princess story has been told a billion times, and it gets a little dry and boring after a while. So how much more interesting is it to look into stories that are unexpected? And I think that’s what “Maleficent” is.

new task or activity can be challenging for a child, leading to discouragement and an “I can’t do it” attitude. But when a child has “clear set goals, and then they do it, I see a sense of pride,” said Bridget Hammond, owner and head instructor at martial arts studio In Nae Tae Kwon Do in West Palm Beach. Setting smaller goals, instead of looking at the bigger picture, is key to helping a child build self-esteem. Hammond, who teaches ages 3 through adults, said goals can be set and achieved at any age. “I see children at even age 3 and 4 when they can’t alternate for punching,” Hammond said. “Three weeks later, they can come in and do it.” “That’s when you can see that look in their eyes, like, ‘Wow, I did that,’ ” she said. Former professional ballerina Stephanie Miragliotta agrees with the importance of setting goals to build self-esteem. Miragliotta, who began taking ballet and tap classes at 4 and danced profession-

ally from 18 to 30, said children can build confidence when they find an activity at which they can excel. “Accomplishing one level in dance and going to the next level and progressing helped build my self-esteem,” Miragliotta said. Allowing a child to achieve goals on his or her own is also helpful. Parents and instructors should give children the tools to help strengthen themselves, Hammond said. “When you let them do it themselves, and they accomplish something today that they couldn’t accomplish yesterday, that’s when they experience confidence.” And while most parents feel inclined to constantly praise their child, especially if their child has low self-esteem, parents should consider phrasing praise carefully, says Eddie Brummelman, a doctoral student in Developmental Psychology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Brummelman, who studies the socialization of self, examined how inflated praise, in particular, influenced children’s challenge-seeking in a study published

this year in the journal “Psychological Science.” “When children have low self-esteem, parents are often inclined to “inflate” their praise,” Brummelman reported. “For example, when a child has low selfesteem, parents might want to praise the child as doing ‘incredibly well’ rather than as merely doing ‘well.’ ” “Although well-intended,” Brummelman reported, “such inflated praise might backfire in children with low self-esteem, leading them to avoid challenges out of fear of failure.” Children should not look at challenges as a bad thing, however. “Look at [a challenge] as a chance to improve yourself,” Hammond said. And remind children that it takes time to achieve a goal. “Things don’t happen overnight,” she said. Palm Beach County-based swim instructor and math teacher Kerriann Bingham said parents should not introduce fears into a challenge. “Recognize the fear, but don’t talk about it,” Bingham said. “If you bring it

up, they’re going to go with it.” Help your child work on the new skill or challenge. And continue to go over the concept, Bingham said. “In the end, they’ll get it.” It also helps children build self-esteem when they do not measure themselves against others. This is an important message for girls to hear, Hammond said. “It helps them in the teenage years, especially, to have a strong sense of self.” Last but not least, give your child an opportunity to shine. Whether in a competition or a recital, it’s important for a child to perform in front of an audience. “Competing helps to see where their confidence level is,” Hammond said. Miragliotta, who not only danced on stage but performed on a Disney cruise ship for five months, agrees that performing in front of an audience is important. “Being able to perform as a dancer is key in your progression as a dancer, as opposed to just taking classes,” Miragliotta said. “It’s a major part of what gives you self-esteem because everyone is watching you and applauding for you.” Bingham, who swam competitively and on scholarship in college, said competition is important. “Competition is the all-around character builder, even if you aren’t the top jock,” she said. “It helps you work with your mind to achieve a goal and to be motivated.” HELP YOUR CHILDREN SUCCEED

Exercises like rock climbing, structured play sessions and even clapping along to musical beats are being used to help kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, augmenting medication with these structured sessions. About 11 percent of children have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are three main types:

inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive and a combination of the two. Kids with ADHD typically have trouble with executive function: things like paying attention to something that doesn’t interest them, making priorities, sticking with things until the end and imagining consequences, said Dr. Jeffrey Brosco, professor of clinical pediatrics and associate director of the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami School of Medicine. “It’s not a problem when you’re not asking them to sit still and follow the rules and do a lot of boring stuff. But when you do require it, and they can’t do it, it’s a big problem,” he said. The best way to diagnose ADHD is with a comprehensive psychological evaluation that includes intelligence testing, processing speed, auditory and visual processing, said Gary Lancelotta, a psychologist at Baptist Children’s Hospital in Miami. “You want to get a sense of how attentional issues are impacting the child overall,” he said. An evaluation should include formal parent and teacher reports, and rule out other potential problems, like hearing issues, Brosco said. Though it is one of the most common childhood disorders, it can be frustrating for a parent trying to determine the best way to treat a child with ADHD. Stimulant medications like Ritalin and Adderall are the most widely used treatments. Between 70 and 80 percent of children with ADHD respond positively to these medications, according to the CDC. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. “There is a lot of evidence that stimu-

lant medications are excellent for the core symptoms of ADHD: not being able to pay attention to something that is boring, like math class, and for some kids, impulsivity and hyperactivity,” Brosco said. “For those symptoms, medication is very effective. It doesn’t fix the problem, it just provides a bridge until the child matures enough to handle the situation on his own.” Stimulant side effects can include reduced appetite, stunted growth and interference with sleep. “We have 30 years of research on stimulant medications, so we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. You have to balance the risk and the benefit,” Brosco said. When the medicines work well, children tend to eat less, and they don’t grow as fast, he said. “In the worst case scenario, a child might end up being an inch shorter than they would have otherwise been. So the question for a parent is, ‘If your child was destined to be 5-11, and he is going to be 5-10, but this allowed him

42

to stay in school, graduate and get a job. Is that worthwhile?’ And for most parents, it is.” Stories of college kids who use stimulant medications to pull all-nighters and middle schoolers selling the drugs at school do not accurately reflect the patient pool, Brosco said. In 20 years of practice, he has not seen patients take more of the medicine than they need of their own accord. “Sometimes families will push for a higher dose than I’m comfortable with, but it’s really not an issue for most children who have this condition and benefit from the medicine.” If a child hasn’t responded to trials of two or three different stimulants, some try a nonstimulant like Strattera, “though we don’t often see a big difference,” Brosco said. “Instead, we’re moving toward longacting Guanfacine, or Intuniv.” Medicine is only one component of ADHD treatment. “Most of us in the field would say that it’s all the other stuff that matters, at least as much, if not more,” Brosco said. “It’s like a three-legged stool.

Medicine is one leg, the other is what you’re doing to help a child with his behavior, and the third is what the child is doing himself.” Appropriate behavioral interventions also will help with executive function, he said. “If a child is running around and the teacher says get back to your seat, that’s reinforcing a bad behavior,” Brosco said. “Instead, you want to catch that child sitting in their seat and being good, and you provide the reinforcement. But it’s hard when a teacher has 20 or more students in a classroom.” Classroom interventions like a daily report card are an effective tool, he said. “Each day, a child gets a report from the teacher on key things, such as did he stay in his seat, finish his assignment, raise his hand before speaking?” Brosco said. “The idea is that the child gets rewarded for doing those things, and doesn’t get rewarded if he’s not doing those things. But it’s not punishment.” Exercises like rock climbing, skateboarding and martial arts that require con-

centration can improve function in kids with ADHD. “I don’t think anyone knows exactly how exercise helps. If you look at correlation studies, kids who exercise more have fewer symptoms,” Brosco said. “But it also falls into the realm of if you exercise, eat right and sleep more, you tend to do better, whether you have ADHD or not.” Lancelotta leads a weekly rock-climbing session in Miami for kids with ADHD and autism, among others. “It’s not an evidenced-based treatment for ADHD, but it requires team attention and concentration to the activity, or else they fall, so there is an immediate response if they’re not paying close attention,” he said. “It helps with motor planning, hand and foot placement. It helps with individual goal planning. It increases frustration tolerance.” Kids with ADHD have a tougher time reading social cues, so it can help with socialization. “Rock climbing presents a series of calculated goals. There are a lot of metaphors in rock climbing. Each rock represents an obstacle,” Lancelotta said. “In our group, kids come in with individual goals, ADHD, issues surrounding impulse control, behavioral self-control and anger management. Those are all aspects that we try to incorporate in the activity.” Activities like skateboarding and martial arts focus on attention to detail, so if kids like that, and if their competency is increasing, it can build on itself, he said. Tina Chilampath, an occupational therapist with Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, uses an Interactive Metronome as a tool to improve cognitive and motor skills in kids with ADHD. The computer program gets the child to clap their hands or tap their feet in time to a beat, essentially practicing their concentration skills, she said. The program tracks accuracy, and as a child progresses, it introduces distraction and the task becomes more difficult. “Kids with ADHD have a very hard time focusing on one thing while other things are going on at the same time,” Chilampath said. “This works to improve attention and coordination. There’s been

NOVEMBER 2014

10/15/14 12:06 PM

evidence that it improves language processing and reading skills.” If you give a child with ADHD a multistep task, they have a hard time figuring out how to motor plan, sequence, use their time and keep to a rhythm. All of these things are related to being able to pay attention, Chilampath said. The Interactive Metronome is a tool that can be incorporated into physical, occupational or speech therapy. “It’s something to add to the mix,” she said. The minimum frequency is twice a week for 15 to 60 minutes. There is also a home-based program that requires parent training. Chilampath also helps conduct a Social Sensory Group, which meets in eight weekly one-hour sessions and is targeted to kids with ADHD and those who have trouble with social issues. Kids are grouped by cognitive level. “It helps teach them peer interaction and lets them practice what they’re learning in a group, rather than one-on-one,” she said. Crafts, games, obstacle courses and outings are incorporated into sessions. Another therapy is neurofeedback, which uses sensors to monitor brain activity as a child plays a special video game, Brosco said. Brain waves are recorded, so the child can see when he is most efficient. The idea is, with practice, to retrain the brain to work in the most efficient mode. The therapy is typically done over multiple sessions. “There is some evidence that using it reduces the amount of medicine that you will need,” Brosco said, “but it is not as effective as medication.” In fact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that neurofeedback cannot be recommended as an alternative to medication use in ADHD. Activities like yoga, meditation and self-calming exercises also can help. “There is some evidence that they can be helpful, but it’s not as strong,” Brosco said. “There are also isolated studies on nutrient deficiencies and dietary supplements, but the research on those is not as strong as for behavioral interventions like daily report cards, or stimulant medications.”

Suspect Your Child Has a Disability?

What’s Next? BY CARRIE WELLS, ED.D.

W

ith a doctorate and more than 10 years of experience in the field of special education, I am often asked by parents “What do I do if I suspect my child has a disability?”

This is a complex question with many answers, and there are many different steps to finding the support and guidance you need at this challenging time.

1.

Begin by identifying the areas in which you believe your child’s development is either delayed or atypical. Delayed development means that he or she is significantly behind on developmental milestones. Atypical development means that he or she is developing in a manner that appears to be unusual, unlike how other children develop. Write detailed notes regarding your concerns.

2.

Speak to your pediatrician. Pediatricians are experts on general child development. While they may not be able to diagnose a specific disability or disorder, they can write a prescription for an evaluation to be conducted by the appropriate specialist. Remember to voice all of your concerns and have your pediatrician examine your child thoroughly to provide you with the correct information.

3.

Schedule an evaluation. In the Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade tri-county area, you can contact FDLRS (Florida Diagnostic & Learning Resources System) Child Find any time leading up to

or after your child’s 3rd birthday. Begin by scheduling a screening, which will require you to complete paperwork stating your concerns across several domains. Multiple professionals will work with your child, asking questions and engaging him in learning activities to determine if he requires further testing in any areas. Upon completion of that evaluation, if the professionals have determined a need for services, a follow-up meeting will be conducted to discuss the services. (*If your child is not yet 3, find a local agency that provides Early Intervention (EI) evaluations and services, which support children birth through age 3.)

Identify supportive individuals. Understanding that your child may have delays or patterns of development that differ from the norm can be scary, and the process of getting your child diagnosed so he/she can be provided with services is intimidating. Identify the people in your life who are there to support you – whether they are family members, friends or an online community. Rely on them when you need help.

5.

Use the Internet to research cautiously. The Internet can be such a powerful tool when used properly; just remember that some of what you will read online is filled with opinions and or can be entirely inaccurate. If you have access to a university’s database, that is a better place to begin your research. If not, try to find reputable websites, not just message boards and wikis. When facing this challenge, try to remember: No two children are the same. Each child matures in a unique manner, with growth spurts and lulls that affect all aspects of his or her development. However, if you do have concerns, understand that they are valid and should be addressed to assist your child in getting the help he or she needs.

If you feel they are incapable of handling their own affairs, you should speak to an attorney about becoming your child’s legal guardian. Florida has adopted special procedures that make it easy to appoint guardians for individuals with developmental disabilities such as autism or cerebral palsy. By becoming your child’s legal guardian, you will have the legal ability to act on your child’s behalf and make the best decisions for their well-being.

Your Estate Plan. A common misconception about estate planning is that it is only for the “wealthy.” But estate planning is a fundamental tool that enables you to provide for the care of your child with special needs when you are gone or incapacitated. There are also important estateplanning tools available, such as Special Needs Trusts, which allow you to financially provide for your child while preserving their qualification for government assistance. These trusts can provide funds to pay for certain expenses that can enhance your child’s quality of life, from psychological treatment to movie tickets or music lessons. If you don’t have assets to leave behind, a life-insurance policy is an affordable way to financially secure your children’s futures, especially in terms of funding a Special Needs Trust.

Record-keeping. Keeping records of your child’s developments, treatments, education plans, and general care throughout their life is essential. These documents will come in handy on many occasions, such as establishing legal guardianship, applying for government assistance and creating your own estate plan. I advise my clients to keep both a digital copy and a hard copy of these documents to ensure they are always available. When planning for the future of your family and your child with special needs, remember that there are many avenues of support - you don’t have to do it all yourself. Speak with someone experienced in planning for families with special dynamics. Reaching out for help will make planning for the future care of your child much more feasible, and once the planning is all done, you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that you’ve set your child up for a healthy and successful future. and made a flying leap onto her daddy. Still groggy, I tried to calm Jessie. “Calm down, calm down. It’s OK. Calm down before somebody gets hurt!” About three seconds later, that somebody was me, as Jessie’s knee landed … well, let’s just say that had I known this was coming, I would have gone to bed wearing the protective cup I used during my church-softball-playing days. When Jessie calmed down, she snuggled in between Mattie and me, with one arm around Eeyore and Sam, and fell asleep. Once I’m awake, though, I have a tough time falling back to sleep, especially after being awakened by 83 pounds of blunt force trauma, followed by a swift knee in the groin. I turned over on my side, hoping to catch a few winks. However, instead of finding sleep, I was goosed … by a cow. I erred when I thought Jessie only brought

Eeyore and Sam. She had also carried her cow, Cuddles. Thank goodness it wasn’t Unicorn. I knew I wouldn’t be falling back to sleep anytime soon, so I left Jessie in bed with Mattie and went to the living room to read. I soon drifted off in my recliner. Later, I moved to the sofa and slept there before getting up to take the dog for her morning walk. After a brisk walk, a yawning dad went to wake Jessie for school. As I looked down at my sleeping family, one word came to mind – thankful. (OK, “tired” would have worked, too.) Jessie had maintained her position in the middle of the bed with Mattie on one side and Eeyore, Sam and Cuddles on the other. The three stuffed animals were resting comfortably on my favorite pillow. Cuddles and Sam looked up at me with their stitched smiles. I smiled back.

Sure, Mattie and I had been deprived of a little sleep. However, we had received an opportunity to show Jessie that we are always there for her, to protect, comfort and love her. Jessie’s flying leap reminded me to be thankful for the opportunities I have to make a difference as a dad. (Though I’d prefer future ones to be pain-free.) This leads me to another reason I write: Writing is therapeutic for this sleepdeprived father. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments.

Say what you mean and mean what you say, but before throwing out a consequence, make sure it is manageable and reasonable for you to follow through with and for them to follow. 5 WAYS TO CREATE

An Attitude of Gratitude in Your Kids By Janet Eltaktouk

restaurant DIRECTORY

Do you model an Attitude of Gratitude? November, a month of traditions and thankfulness, is the perfect time to start a new daily tradition in your household. We come together to celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family and enjoy a great feast. But Thanksgiving is not the only day you should “count your blessings.” The best way to start modeling a grateful spirit is to start sharing what you are thankful for on a daily basis with your children. This will be a journey of learning to be thankful for the smallest things and seeing God all around you as you move through each day. As a parent, it is critical to instill an attitude of gratitude in our children, and it begins with you modeling the behavior.

Showing gratitude is a healthy habit. It can lead to happiness, satisfaction, increased selfesteem, hope and empathy. Studies show that kids who practice grateful thinking have a more positive attitude toward family and school. To instill gratitude gives kids a different perspective to take into account. Most kids these days feel “entitled” and don’t get the full scope of the privileges and opportunities most kids in our country enjoy. They don’t know or care about where it all comes from. Once they recognize this, it will help them better understand others and be more inclined to treat them with respect. They’ll be less inclined to focus on their wants and more appreciative of what they have.

So how can we create an attitude of gratitude in our kids? Here are five ways to help you start growing an attitude of gratitude in your own home:

1. BE A GRATEFUL PARENT It’s amazing the change in a child’s self-esteem when he is shown appreciation from a parent or sibling. Telling him how grateful you are for his smallest action goes a long way. Boost kids’ morale and thank them for getting homework done on time or for sharing an item with a sibling or friend. 2. GET THE FAMILY IN THE HABIT OF SERVING OTHERS TOGETHER Community plays a very important role in life. Getting involved in a community service helps unite people from diverse backgrounds to work toward a common goal. By helping out, you and your kids may find hidden talents and change your view on your self-worth, which will promote self-esteem and personal growth. Plus, kids learn to be active members in the community and positive contributors to society. By serving others, children will gain a different perspective on the world and gain a sense of purpose.

Sit down with your kids and discuss the ways they can volunteer. Help make sandwiches for a homeless shelter, pack backpacks for underresourced children, or help beautify a local school or business. 3. “PLEASE & THANK YOU” “Don’t forget to say Please and Thank you” – the most common phrase used by parents in training little ones. But true appreciation in kids takes time to blossom. Because they are being told, kids may not truly feel the gratitude that we would expect. Rather than teaching our kids these behaviors, they may be better learned through observing gratitude, generosity and kindness. There are countless opportunities every day for us to model gratitude for our kids: thanking the cashier at the market or the barista who added an extra shot of espresso. When kids observe your sincerity, they are more inclined to be the same. 4. HAVE THEM PITCH IN WHEN THEY WANT SOMETHING I do this often with my teen. If your kids have saved birthday money or an allowance, have them pitch in toward those new $100 sneakers. When kids have to use money they have saved up, they tend to learn the value of the dollar quickly. It also teaches restraint and encourages kids to appreciate what they have, as well as giving them a more realistic perspective on what you and others do for them. 5. LINK GRATITUDE TO YOUR HIGHER POWER Most religious traditions emphasize the practice of gratitude through acknowledging blessings and through serving others. Attending regular religious services is one way for kids to gain a sense of gratitude as part of a community. Even those who aren’t part of a formal worship community can offer prayers personally at appropriate times. Spirituality and gratitude go hand in hand. How blessed are we to have running water, food on the table, our health, airconditioning, clothes and shoes or even a toy. How powerful it is to point out that even having one of those is a blessing. How different life would be if we all adopted this kind of attitude. Grab a journal or notebook and have everyone write what they are thankful for. It can be done daily, weekly, or monthly – whatever you choose. Go back and read past entries together as a reminder of your blessings “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” –William Arthur Ward Join me for a month-long challenge starting Nov. 1 on my blog Outersparkle.com for 30 DAYS OF BEING THANKFUL.

My teacher is the best in the world. She helps all the kids in the class and never says no when we ask for help. Even when a child is slow, she tries her best to help them. And even when she tries to be hard on us her heart won’t let her. I Carmen Scholz wish I could stay with Ms. Scholz for 2nd grade all my grades. And she always keeps Saint Helen breakfast in her classroom so if any Catholic School child did not have breakfast in the morning, she can have something to give them. That is why Ms. Scholz is the best teacher in the school. Nominated by Maria Marsdin

Mrs. Lee rocks because she goes above and beyond. You can tell she cares about the kids and it’s not just a job. She has been teaching kindergarten for 15 years and still has spark in her eye like it’s her first year. She is unbelievably organized. She makes a list for her list, which makes it easy for the parents and the kids. When we first went to meet her, I was impressed. The room was well-layed-out, she had a warm smile on her face, and no matter how many Lisa Lee parents or kids distracted her, she remained calm with the same Kindergarten warm smile. The real joy was seeing her kids she had the previous year stop back by to say hi to her. Mrs. Lee also heads up the PTO Coral Reef Elementary for the kindergarten. We all have busy lives and knowing she has a family of her own with two small kids but still manages to find time to do all the extras, that’s when you know you have a star. Nominated by Jennifer Fortin

Jacqueline Torres-Quinonez is the most adaptable, fun-loving, hard-working teacher. She teaches Spanish at Gulfstream School, and on Sunday mornings at PETCO, donates her time to the needy Jacqueline little animals. She also leads Torres-Quinonez a group of volunteers. She is wonderful, kind and supportive 1st-5th grade Spanish and makes the lessons fun, Gulfstream which encourages the kids to Elementary try harder and learn. Nominated by Jenny Romero

Elana Militzok has incomparable creativity, enthusiasm and passion for teaching. She spends countless hours creating creative lessons that fascinate her students. She is a master of introducing concepts and then allowing the students to Elana Militzok work independently. Moreover, Kindergarten/ she is warm, caring, open to 1st Grade parent involvement and extremely Beachside motivating. Montessori Nominated by Cheree Liebowitz Village Center

Mrs. Santosuosso is a wonderful teacher because she is kind and patient with all the students and the parents, too. She’s very communicative and encourages each child to do their best and never yells. My son’s favorite things about her include receiving High Five coupons and choosing surprises out of the Drawing Box. If the kids are really good, she’ll choose someone to sit in the extra comfy reading chair. I think we got one of the best teachers a parent could ask for. Nominated by Darcey Thompson

Mrs. Barrionuevo was my son’s kindergarten teacher last year, and she helped him with his wellbeing not only academically but also socially and emotionally. She gave him confidence by encouraging Lottie him in new endeavors. While Barrionuevo other teachers cautioned my Kindergarten son might repeat kindergarNorland Elementary ten, she saw something else and nurtured it. Nominated by Rachel Case

Angela Santosuosso 4th grade Calusa Elementary
