ENHANCING THE LIVES OF FAMILIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Couple whose love story started with South Florida Parenting magazine to marry in the fall By Joanie Cox-Henry

J

osie Bartolone and William Joey Murray will be getting married this October, but when they met as children at a South Florida Parenting event, they never imagined that day would come.

“The first time Joey and I officially met each other was a Holiday Show at the Broward Convention Center,” Bartolone recalled. “Our mothers would be working at different events for South Florida Parenting magazine, and we’d end up hanging out together. Our parents would also clean up the event, and we’d be the last two kids hanging around.” Bartolone’s mother, Angela Bartolone, and Murray’s mother, Joyce Copp, still both work for South Florida Parenting magazine. They are friends in and out of the office. “Working with South Florida Parenting magazine since 1998, I really call this magazine and this company my second home,” Angela Bartolone said. “I’ve made some amazing friends.” Angela Bartolone was in shock when she went over Copp’s house one day and saw her daughter’s Communion class photo on the wall. “My mom noticed my friend and then me in the photo taken at St. Elizabeth church,” Josie Bartolone said. “She couldn’t believe Joey and I were in the same Communion class.”

14

southfloridaparenting.com |

014_015 JosieJoey.indd 14

Angela Bartolone also never imagined her daughter would marry her co-worker’s son, especially when they were kids riding in the back seat of her car on the way to South Florida Parenting events. “When I found out Joey was going to propose, it made me very happy,” Angela Bartolone said. “I was going through a difficult time. I had just found out my mom had cancer, and this was a happy moment for me.” Although Josie and Joey went to J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs, they didn’t start dating until college. “He asked me out in high school, but I was a little hesitant to start a relationship at first,” Josie Bartolone said. “Then he went to college in Fort Myers, and I stayed behind in Coral Springs, and after he had been chasing me, I went after him.” The news was a surprise to their mothers. “Angela and I found out they were in a relationship when they changed their status on Facebook,” Copp said. Both 24, the pair now look back on South Florida Parenting magazine as a memorable part of their lives where it all began.

“This magazine has been a part of our lives for a while,” said Josie Bartolone, who is now a second-grade teacher. “We really grew up with this magazine. Soon after we get married, we hope to have kids. And I can’t wait to bring them to South Florida Parenting events.” Murray, who also grew up in Coral Springs and now works as a customer service manager of craft store Michaels, is also eager to take their future children to South Florida Parenting gatherings. “If my mom didn’t start working with that magazine, none of this would’ve ever happened, so I’m so glad she did,” Murray said. “And it will be so great for the kids to visit their grandmas!” Josie Bartolone, who is over the moon about her upcoming nuptials, said she feels destiny has taken its course. “I feel like this is fate. Our parents really brought us together,” she said. “So many people involved with the magazine were so happy to see us come together. Several of them will be at our wedding. We will be getting married in the same church where we both received our first Communion. It feels like a dream.”

COVER KIDS SUCCESS STORY

Haylie Turnquest By Geri Irwin Clem

S

ince being chosen as a 2013 Cover Kids winner, Haylie Turnquest’s modeling career has exploded.

Haylie, who lives with her family in Loxahatchee, appeared on South Florida Parenting’s January 2013 cover. Since then, she has worked for JCPenney, P.S. Aeropostale, Bloomingdale’s, Walmart, Target, Otto, Next Direct and Aldi, to name a few. She has traveled to Los Angeles, the Dominican Republic and once even spent two weeks in Spain on a modeling job. In addition to print, Haylie has done several commercials for clients such as the Ladies Professional Golf Association, P.S. Aeropostale, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Office Depot, Club Penguin for Disney, Balloon Bonanza, Strobeez and Beados. She also appeared in a student film called “Dante’s Inferno” directed by Alcee Walker. When the film premiered in New York, Haylie was able to attend with her family. One of the things Haylie loves about modeling is working with all of the different teams of people, including the make-up artists, wardrobe coordinators, photographers, production companies and art directors. She has met many people with whom she has made lasting friendships. “The Cover Kids contest certainly opened up a whole new world for Haylie,” her mom said. Haylie, who is 13, hopes to continue modeling and has been taking acting classes and voice lessons. She wants to be an actress in addition to her modeling career. The 8th-grader also is a tournament golfer and consistently plays tournaments throughout South Florida. She hopes to play golf on the collegiate level.

NOW & THEN

25 years of Parenting: Kids haven’t changed but parenthood has By Karen Deerwester, Ed.S.

Twenty-five years ago, parents were still looking for the best possible answers to all their day-to-day parenting questions: discipline, nighttime parenting, foods and feeding, potty training and, again, discipline: how to get your child to listen, to stop hitting-bitingthrowing-whining, to clean up, to brush their teeth, to be patient and kind. Kids haven’t changed. They are learning essential socialemotional-cognitive-physical skills to grow into happy, successful, contributing grown-ups. But each generation takes a unique journey to adulthood. The past 25 years are marked by accelerated and radical changes in technology, communication and information. Today, the Millennials, born 1980 through 2000, are starting to become parents, and the effects of a Millennial culture are being felt by everyone. In 2015, we are a culture of technological multi-tasking, crowd-sourced decisions and social oversharing. Parents today are plugged-in and social media savvy. They trust their peers more than the so-called experts because expert opinion changes with every new research study. The newest generation of parents is environmentally conscious, values driven and enormously resourceful. Unfortunately, they are also live highly pressured, fast-paced lives in a stressful, anxiety-producing world. The year 2015 is a very different world than 1990. Technology changes everything.

Information Overload Instant access to limitless information also brings information overload, an undermining sense of doubt, uncertainty and anxiety. Boca Raton mom Michelle Moore said, “We are not just the information generation, we are also the misinformation generation.” The level of information transparency and media attentiongrabbing has led to escalation of distrust and fear-based parenting over baby sleep positions, tainted baby food, toxic toys and more.

Handheld devices create 24-7 connectivity. Parents have immediate answers at their fingertips, whether it’s health and safety, stages of development, best food choices, safest sunscreens or other questions. Yet those same devices interrupt face time with family and friends, creating greater distraction and interruptions to family life. Work lives are also changed when people are expected to be accessible during traditional family time in the evening or on weekends. Yet more parents have more flexible work hours or work at home, and working parents are increasingly more visible at daytime activities and events.

20

southfloridaparenting.com |

020_021 THenNowParentAdvice.indd 20

Crowd-sourcing decisions In 2015, there is a new source of community and trust. It just isn’t with “experts,” corporations or science. It’s fluid and relationship-based. Peer bloggers have become unifying voice and a magnet for ideas and inspiration for moms and dads as well as a new diversity that includes LGBT parents, parents of children with special needs, etc. Social media recommendations and peer reviews influence consumer trends as well as parenting philosophies.

SEPTEMBER 2015

NOW & THEN

(

Social Sharing and Over-Sharing Family life is lived in a very public, virtual space on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and more. Geographical boundaries have been reconfigured with FaceTime with grandparents and parents traveling across continents for business. The increased sharing can slip over into impersonal communication, even cyberbullying. “Keeping up with the Joneses” has grown to the ubiquitous and insatiable FOMO, “fear of missing out.” Yet technology natives are also redefining social connections in ways that previous generations cannot understand, and with a better sense of humor.

The Knowledge Curve Parents today have the challenge of raising children for a world yet to be invented. Scientists describe the exponential growth of knowledge from doubling every 12 months to doubling every 12 hours. We now have coding games for preschoolers and curricula based on innovation instead of the 3 Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic). Brain science is shaping our fundamental understanding of emotions and cognition. The demands on parents today are enormous, but so are the opportunities. Is it better or worse than 25 years ago? It’s both: both easier and harder. There is a tendency to overschedule and overprotect, but there’s also a new resilience and resourcefulness. Parents are better connected to each other and to their children. There are also contradictions: more joy, less fun. Today’s parents are very hard on themselves, maybe because everyone is watching them and analyzing them. Instead, let’s trust them: They’ve got this! Karen Deerwester is the owner of Family Time Coaching & Consulting, writing and lecturing on parenting and early childhood topics since 1984. She is also the author of The Potty Training Answer Book, The Playskool Guide to Potty Training and The Entitlement-Free Child.

Boca Raton pediatrician Jerry Wexler, M.D., who began practicing medicine in 1976 and co-founded Boca Raton Pediatric Associates more than 30 years ago, said there were six pediatricians in the area and one hospital when he first came to Boca. Now there are about 30 pediatricians and two hospitals. Despite all the technological advances of the past two decades, the goal of pediatric medicine remains the same. “Our goal is and has always been to provide compassionate care, always making sure our children are happy, healthy and growing well in a safe environment,” Wexler said. Some of the most significant changes Wexler has seen in 25 years are “more infants are breastfed now than they used to be, parents are much more protective these days, and there has been a reduction in vaccine-preventable diseases,” he said. In the past 25 years, a variety of vaccines have been introduced to the pediatric market, including Gardasil and vaccines for Hepatitis A, meningitis, rotavirus, pneumococcus and Haemophilus Influenzae Type B. With the availability of the Internet, however, pediatricians are faced with the inevitable challenge of parents seeking more information online than ever before. “One of the biggest challenges now is acceptance of vaccines. With the Internet, it’s a challenge for parents to separate facts from fiction. Doctors have to base their opinions on scientific facts, but various

bloggers and websites don’t have to necessarily prove anything.” When it comes to raising healthy children, overdosing on Google can cause a conundrum. Parents 25 years ago didn’t have the option to “Google.” “Googling medical issues can create unnecessary anxieties,” Wexler said. “During an Internet search, a list of unusual and unlikely possibilities can come up. It’s always best to seek a professional medical opinion.” The biggest negative change Wexler said he has seen in pediatrics is the change in insurance and health care plans. “There’s a third party who’s never seen or examined your child who is now influencing your child’s care,” Wexler said. “Some healthcare plans will only cover generic medicines, and not all generic medicines work as well as brand names. Some medications are not available on all plans.” With thousands of patients he’s seen come through his practice, which he shares with Jack Blanco, M.D., and Suzanne Laskas, M.D., Wexler is as enthusiastic about helping children today as when he started. “Having the opportunity to see the children I took care of as babies now coming in with their own babies is the most gratifying part of being a pediatrician,” Wexler said. “There is no better feeling than watching generations of kids growing up happy and healthy.”

Kids are snacking more now than they have in the past, up to 3 times a day. A 2010 study published in “Health Trends” of children ages 2-18 found that more than 25 percent of their calories were coming from snacks (including sweetened beverages), and kids are now consuming 113 more snack calories than they did 30 years ago. Portion sizes are increasing, adding 50-150 calories to foods. These additional calories aren’t coming from healthy ingredients but from added sugars, fats and refined grains. More artificial food dyes are in foods now than 25 years ago as well. The Evolution of Snacking

Sales of snack and granola bars are increasing with the wide variety of these products available and their convenience. Everyone seems to be looking for quick and easy options. Due to the wide variety of processed and packaged foods available today, Americans are eating about 4000 mg of sodium a day, much more than the recommended 2400 mg daily. Low fat was the trend in the 1990s; now we have moved to low carb, low sugar, high protein. But with the low-sugar trend come artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols being added to foods, which can have negative health effects. Although healthier snack options are available and more children are choosing them, sweet and salty snacks still prevail. When shopping for snacks read the labels and spend time comparing products, or even better, make your own snacks at home.

So What if it’s Raining By Chrissie Ferguson

Chuck E. Cheese (formerly known as Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre and Chuck E. Cheese Pizza) made a name for itself in the late 1970s when it opened its doors for the first time in San Jose, Calif. This family restaurant – whose mouse mascot sang and interacted with guests – was one of the first places that integrated food, entertainment and an indoor arcade. In the 1990s, Chuck E. Cheese became THE place to host a child’s birthday party. With pizza, ball pits, and fun games and rides, it was a place “Where a kid can be a kid.” Chuck E. Cheese fell off the map for a while, but the revamping of its mascot – now a fun-loving, guitar-playing mouse – and update of its locations has put it back on the family fun radar. But Chuck E. Cheese is not the only place parents and kids go to for indoor fun. Indoor playgrounds, gyms and trampoline parks have become widely popular – especially in South Florida where weather is hot and often unpredictable. Inflatable playgrounds – such as Jumpin’ Jamboree in Miami,

26

southfloridaparenting.com |

026_027 NowThenPlaygrounds.indd 26

Xtreme Action Sports recently reopened offering much more than go-karting.

Monkey Joe’s, Pump It Up or Jump A Roos – and indoor playgrounds, such as Cool Beans, Cool de Sac, Little Java’s, The Wow Factory or Funderdome (where toddler zones are available as well as a ropes course and a climbing wall), provide hours of entertainment for the entire family. The most recent trend in indoor fun is trampoline parks such as Sky Zone, Off the Wall, Planet Air Sports and Trampoline High. It’s an easy way to get your daily exercise, even if you aren’t participating in the fitness classes that some of the locations offer. Research shows that 10 minutes of jumping on a trampoline provides the same fitness results as 33 minutes of running. If you don’t want to bounce, the newly opened Xtreme Action Sports and recently expanded Monster Mini Golf offer other indoor pursuits. So don’t let the weather dampen your plans. Find your fun in South Florida indoors.

Camps The names have changed among summer camp options in South Florida during the past 25 years, but the offerings are remarkably similar. Back in the 1990s, much like today, children could experience South Florida’s city and school recreational camps, church camps, gymnastics camps and dance camps; they could indulge their wilder side at Miami Seaquarium’s summer camp, Camp Parrotdise at Parrot Jungle or Lion Country Safari’s summer camp; they could practice their game at baseball, football, soccer and sports camps; and they could get out on the water at a number of sailing camps. Even without being in a half- or full-day program, kids in the early 1990s could take classes to learn coding at Computertots, learn the piano at Yamaha Music School, and brush up on academics at Sylvan Learning Center. BUT IN 2015, THEIR SUMMER OPTIONS ARE EVEN GREATER. STEM camps put the focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, modeling, musical theater and arts camps abound. But kids can also go to Wakeboard Summer Camp at the Miami Watersports Complex, become a rock star at School Of Rock or Live! Modern School of Music, learn sports analysis at the PlayByPlay Sports Broadcasting Camp, create the next Facebook at Camp Invention, or become bakers at Mia Cake House’s Baking and Cake Decorating Summer Camp. They can learn another language or two at Camp Lingua’s Language Immersion Summer Camp; specialize in soccer, martial arts, baseball, football, golf, tennis or ice skating at a sports camp; master graphic illustration and video game creation at Dawson Animation School; learn photography and film & TV production at Digi-Camp; and explore careers through special summer classes at Miami Dade College, Broward College, Florida Atlantic University and more. Shorter specialty camps allow children to explore various interests, such as foreign languages, robotics and multimedia production, and adventure camps get children out in their communities, visiting parks, sports events, indoor playgrounds, pools, movies, theaters and more. Many museums, and Zoo Miami and the Palm Beach Zoo, have programs as well, offering spring and summer camps designed to educate and interest kids in the nature and science around them. With so many options, it’s no surprise many kids never want summer to end.

LOOKING FORWARD

A Look Ahead: Life in 2040 By Emily Moorhouse

L

ife is likely to be quite different when we jump ahead 25 years. Several South Florida experts weighed in on what their fields may look like in 2040.

TECHNOLOGY Expert: James Parrish has a doctorate in information systems and is an associate professor of information systems at Nova Southeastern University and the president of the South Florida Technology Alliance Big data. We are in the beginning of a data revolution when we look at big data, Parrish said. “I think that technology in that area is going to advance and have tremendous impact on other fields like medicine,” he said. “By sequencing genes, we can gain insights about people and about their susceptibility to certain diseases or their propensity to have, say, cancer or something along those lines. I think that as that becomes much more advanced, we can actually get to the point to where we can start predicting diseases before they happen and put treatments in place that are preventative rather than reactive.” 3-D printing. “A 3-D printer works with multiple dimensions, and instead of ink, let’s say it has molten metal that it puts in each little spot, and then it sits there and it dries, so you have a solid type of object at the end,” Parrish said, noting that students at the University of Central Florida 3-D printed a prosthetic arm. Artificial intelligence. Parrish predicts that wearable technologies will transform almost into implantables, where we start to merge technology with humans. He predicts we may even wear a contact lens with a cell-phonelike display and an earpiece. “Let’s say you’re a sales person or something along those lines, and as people ask you questions, you’re get-

46

southfloridaparenting.com |

046_049 FuturePredict.indd 46

ting the information fed to you from some sort of device,” he said. Parrish also foresees smart homes being the standard. “We have smart thermostats now. We have smart refrigerators,” he said. “I think that those types of applications of the Internet of Things will only continue to expand.” He noted autonomous cars, too. “I mean, Google is doing it now. They have their self-driving car, but I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be widely publicly available by 2040.” Virtual reality. “A lot of virtual reality applications, where right now it seems very futuristic, I think will be commonplace and integrated into many different fields, such as education, entertainment, really anything when you think about it,” he said. “There are some police simulators now that are quasi-virtual reality, but I think that that simulation is going to be much more realistic and much more immersive.” EDUCATION Expert: Maria Izquierdo, the chief academic officer for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Office of Academics and Transformation Flipped classrooms. It’s becoming more common for students to access recorded lessons outside of the classroom and for activities traditionally given as homework to take place in the classroom. “We have really good examples of that here in Miami-Dade,” Izquierdo said. “I think that will be more the norm rather than the exception.” Accelerated, personalized learning. The school

district has several dozen schools where there is no minutes structure, with periods and bells, Izquierdo said. Instead, students come in and out of their lessons and assignments independently. “We have some subjects and some topics that we teach that are led by the teacher or the facilitator, and then half the day is spent virtual learning,” she said. A feature of this model is adaptive learning through technology, such as a program that constantly assesses students’ skills and content mastery, allowing them to progress through classes as they are ready. “The not keeping it lockstep with a grade level, I think, is going to be more the norm,” Izquierdo said, also predicting that dual enrollment will become more popular. “If you’ve been on an accelerated track because you availed yourself of algebra in 7th grade and you availed yourself of geometry in 8th grade, etc., then you have options to take even more accelerated, college-credit-bearing courses and put the cost on the school districts instead of in your parents’ pocketbook.” Experiential learning. Izquierdo said that going forward, there will be greater connection between emerging job demands and the programs offered by school districts. A more outof-the-box idea the district has been looking into is giving startup entrepreneurs and companies space within under-enrolled schools in exchange for in-kind services, she said, referencing a case study on a district that did this. “In the example that I read, this company was an IT company, and they had all kinds of equipment that the school itself could not afford.” She points out that, with this idea,

the companies provide relevant support to teachers and students, which addresses the issue of teachers who are not up-to-date on the skills needed to teach courses related to fast-evolving technologies and professions. MEDICINE Expert: Dr. Dalton Dietrich, a neurologist, the scientific director of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the senior associate dean for the Discovery and Translational Science at the school Cell therapy. “Now we know that there are different areas of brain and maybe spinal cord that actually [experience] neurogenesis – new neuron growth occurs during life – and we’re developing new compounds that actually can enhance that in people,” Dietrich said. The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis currently has FDA-approved clinical trials involving cell therapy. “In years to come, if those experimental clinical studies are shown to be safe and effective, then I think it will be routine for someone to come into an academic hospital or something like this, and there will be potentially cells on the shelf.” Life expectancy. “Some people, based on probably genetics and lifestyle, appear to live

longer. If we can do the appropriate science to better understand why those individuals live longer – a whole family [in which] everybody’s living over 100 years old, for example – then potentially we can utilize some of our new gene therapies and other types of strategies to enhance those pathways that seem to enhance long life,” Dietrich said. “I think people are getting healthier, they are eating better, more and more are getting exercise, and those types of things will also enhance how long we live.” Still, he said, he does not think life expectancy will be markedly different, and that the concentration right now should be on quality of life. ECONOMICS Expert: William Stronge has a doctorate in economics and teaches economic thinking at Nova Southeastern University Cost of living. Stronge predicts that, with less buildable land, living in South Florida will be increasingly expensive compared with other areas. Tourism. “Tourism won’t grow to the extent that it has grown over the last 50 years. It won’t grow because we will be kind of at capacity,” Stronge said.

On the effect of retirees, “in 2040, we’ll be coming to the end of the absorption of the baby boom retirees, and that will have all sorts of impacts,” he said. “The next generation after the baby boomers is a much smaller generation. And so, for example, the next generation won’t be as big a strain on the federal budget in terms of healthcare and even social security.” With the likelihood of fewer retirees relative to workers, he also foresees the employment rate increasing. He said because South Florida has become a dense urban area, which is not as attractive to retirees, the area is becoming less of a retirement haven. “They will be moving up to central Florida or north Florida,” he said. Impact of immigration. “We will get a lot of South American and Caribbean and Central American people moving in, and that will transform our economy from serving elderly people to absorbing international immigrants,” he said. “They will establish businesses of importing goods from the home country or exporting American goods to the home country and facilitating investments involving the home country and so on, so that will be, I think, a very important driver of the economy by 2040.”

MOMS are you SICK and TIRED of trying to lose that TUMMY FAT and LOOSE SKIN after CHILDBIRTH? FDA Cleared Non-Surgical Belly elly Fat Reduction - Read More Below By Stacy Reed

STUBBORN FAT – WE ALL HAVE IT! Even though we maintain our health and looks through diet and exercise, we are genetically predisposed to store fat in the belly, hips and thighs. And it’s stubborn fat that stays put, no matter how much we diet or exercise. We now have a safe, FDA cleared, non-invasive weapon on the war against fat: COOLSCULPTING!!

for. One factor that separates surgical liposuction from all the other methods of fat reduction, is that the fat cells are removed from the body. CoolSculpting procedure works just like liposuction, because of its ability to eliminate the fat cells.

LIPOSUCTION SURGERY RESULTS VS COOLSCULPTING CoolSculpting is a safe and highly Many of us do not want surgical liposuction. So, we remain forever frustrated by our inability to reduce our waist, hips and thighs. CoolSculpting is just the solution you have been waiting

CoolSculpting is an amazing technology developed by Harvard scientists that is safe and literally freezes your fat cells away and eliminates them naturally. This non-invasive device is the only non-surgical device FDA cleared

effective method to eliminate that “stubborn fat.” It freezes only fat cells, so it will not affect healthy cells. The results look natural and smooth, unlike liposuction surgery, which may be uneven and lumpy. Some see results from CoolSculpting in as few as a couple of weeks with more dramatic results occurring between two to three months. For a free consultation call 954-440-1817.

NOW & THEN

Here and gone 1992 Pete Rose’s Ballpark Cafe opened in Boca Raton in 1992 and boasted a gourmet menu and an arcade with state of the art games. The Hit King himself hosted a radio show from the restaurant and appeared there often. Rose expanded to a Boynton Beach location, but both have shut down, with the Boynton location closing in 2011.

1993 Hollywood Sportatorium, which was once an insanely popular venue for concerts including the Grateful Dead and Queen, was demolished in 1993.

2000 Blockbuster Golf & Games, a family fun complex with mini-golf and arcade games, shut down in 2000. 2002 Sunrise Musical Theater, which hosted live shows from Frank Sinatra to The Barenaked Ladies, became a church in 2002.

1994 Ocean World, a marine-themed attraction, closed in Fort Lauderdale in 1994. The park allowed visitors to feed dolphins and featured a variety of shows.

1992 Atlantis the Water Kingdom was a bustling water park when it opened in 1982. Although dozens of musical acts appeared there during the years, including Cyndi Lauper, Cheap Trick, New Kids On The Block and Wang Chung, it closed in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew damaged it badly.

1996 The Dania Beach Hurricane opened in Dania Beach. The wooden roller coaster made headlines for being the largest of its kind in Florida, but it shut down in 2011 because it wasn’t profitable enough, according to a “Sun Sentinel” article. The Boomers family fun park next to it closed in 2015, and a $250 million complex of stores, restaurants and a hotel is expected to replace it. The National Cartoon Museum opened in Mizner Park in 1996. The museum contained more than 130,000 pieces of original cartoon art and was a major attraction for both residents and tourists alike. But according to “The Palm Beach Daily News,” money troubles eventually forced the museum to shut its doors for good.

2004 Wannado City opened its doors at Sawgrass Mills mall in 2004. Kids had the opportunity to enter a simulated child-sized city, where they could explore different careers as a lawyer, police officer, doctor, journalist and other professions. The children earned “play money” they could then use to manage their financial futures. Ironically, Wannado City closed in 2011 due to its own financial woes. 2008 Miami Arena, once home to the Miami Heat and the Florida Panthers, shut down in 2008. 2011 Gold Coast Roller Rink closed after 64 years of free-wheeling fun for the whole family.

2013 Barbie The Dreamhouse Experience opened at Sawgrass Mills mall. The lifesize 10,000-square-foot pink paradise allowed children and parents a chance to walk in Barbie’s shoes for an afternoon. Barbie’s Dreamhouse Experience was scheduled to close at Sawgrass Mills on Aug. 31, 2015. Blockbuster, which was once headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, announced in 2013 that the chain would close its remaining 300 U.S. video rental stores. Blockbuster had filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and was later bought by Dish Network Corp. While Blockbuster once had ads in South Florida Parenting magazine as “a new mother’s best friend,” the video rental chain was made obsolete by companies such as Netflix and Xfinity On Demand. 2014 Legendary Miami blues bar Tobacco Road closed its doors for good just two years after celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Sony PlayStation Sony’s debut console was born out of a failed partnership to create a CD drive add-on for the SNES. The 32-bit PlayStation pulled ahead of the competition from Nintendo and Sega with hit titles like “Gran Turismo” and “Final Fantasy VII.”

1996

1991 Super Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo was late to the 16-bit generation, but the SNES quickly caught up after launching with the blockbuster pack-in game “Super Mario World.” By the end of the 16-bit era, Nintendo’s system had outsold competition from Sega and NEC.

Nintendo 64 By the mid-90s, most console manufacturers were moving to CD-based systems, but Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges for the N64. Titles like “Super Mario 64” and “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” would define 3D games for decades to come.

1999 Sega Dreamcast The Dreamcast was Sega’s last-ditch attempt to recover after the disappointing Saturn. The Dreamcast was the first console to feature a built-in modem and web browser. It was home to major titles like “Shenmue and “SoulCalibur, but by 2001 Sega was forced to cease production.

2001 Microsoft Xbox Microsoft joined the console fray with the Xbox, which offered new features like online gaming through the Xbox Live subscription service. The system launched with the smash hit shooter “Halo: Combat Evolved, spawning a series that continues to release new titles.

2000 Sony PlayStation 2 Sony’s PS2 hit the market with the ability to play PS1 games and DVDs. It was home to hit titles like “Grand Theft Auto 3, “Metal Gear Solid 2 and “God of War. With 155 million units sold worldwide, the PS2 remains the best selling game console in history.

2006 Sony PlayStation 3 The PS3 offered HD graphics but was also a Trojan Horse that brought Blu-Ray players into the homes of owners. The PS3’s library includes critically acclaimed titles like “Uncharted” and “The Last of Us.” However, its high initial price of $600 caused it to fall behind cheaper offerings from rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

2005

By Chris Guanche

Microsoft Xbox 360 Microsoft’s second console offered upgraded graphics but was plagued at launch with defective systems and the “red ring of death” error light. The 360 made its name with hit shooters like “Gears of War,” “Bioshock” and “Mass Effect.” Microsoft later released the Kinect motion add-on, which allows players to use their entire bodies to control games.

2001 Nintendo GameCube Nintendo finally ditched cartridges in favor of the GameCube’s proprietary optical disc, which was smaller than a standard CD or DVD. The compact system offered popular games like “Super Smash Bros. Melee” and “Metroid Prime,” but it didn’t sell as well as the N64 before it.

2006 Nintendo Wii Nintendo eschewed HD graphics for the Wii and instead bet on a radical new motion controller - a bet that helped it ship over 100 million systems worldwide. Titles like “Wii Sports” made the system popular with a new audience of casual players, but new titles in the “Mario” and “Zelda” series appeased dedicated Nintendo fans.

2013 Microsoft Xbox One Microsoft’s third system is locked in a close battle for dominance with the PS4. Upcoming titles include the highly anticipated “Halo 5” and a remake of “Gears of War.” The Xbox One also offers Kinect support and can act as an all-in-one multimedia system with a TV tuner accessory.

2012 Nintendo Wii U Nintendo’s latest system combines HD graphics with the tablet-like GamePad controller that acts as a second screen for games like “Splatoon” and “Super Mario 3D World.” However, the Wii U has struggled to find an audience and is currently last place in hardware sales this generation.

2013 Sony PlayStation 4 Sony switched places with Microsoft by launching a lower priced console, helping propel it back to the top of sales charts. Games like “Uncharted 4” and the upcoming remake “Final Fantasy VII” take advantage of the system’s power to produce photorealistic graphics.

H. Wayne Huizenga buys the Miami Dolphins on March 23. After a lackluster preseason and coming off an Achilles' injury, Dan Marino throws for 453 yards and five TDs – including the game-winner to Irving Fryar on fourth down – to give the Dolphins a 39-35 victory against the Patriots that is the springboard to a 10-6 season and an AFC East title.

1993 Don Shula wins his NFL record 325th game, 19-14 over the Eagles. The Florida Panthers hockey team forms and the Florida Marlins play their first game in history against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 5. The Marlins wins 6-3, with Benito Santiago hitting the first home run in franchise history.

1995-96 The Panthers make their first run to the Stanley Cup Finals, and Marino breaks the all-time records for passing yards and TD passes in a three-week span for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins finish 9-7 and earn a wild card berth in the playoffs. But following a 37-22 loss to Buffalo in the divisional round, coach Don Shula retires after 347 career wins and six Super Bowl appearances.

The Florida Marlins clinch their first playoff appearance with a 6-3 win over Montreal, then sweep the Giants in the division series and upset the Braves in the NLCS on their way to their first World Series, which they win over the Cleveland Indians in the 7th game.

1999 AmericanAirlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat, opens on Biscayne Blvd.

1998 The Dolphins finish 10-6 and qualify for the playoffs for the second straight year, winning their first postseason game since 1994. The season ends with a 38-3 loss to eventual Super Bowl champion Denver. Johnson resigns, and then is talked into coming back under the condition of bringing in former coordinator and good friend Dave Wannstedt as his assistant head coach. The BB&T Center, home of the Florida Panthers, opens in Sunrise as the National Car Rental Center.

1996 Al Leiter fires the first no-hitter in Florida Marlins history, blanking the Colorado Rockies 11-0.

2000 Dave Wannstedt is named head coach of the Miami Dolphins, and Marino retires after 17 seasons as the NFL’s all-time leader in TD passes (420), passing yards (61,361) and completions (4,967). Jack McKeon takes over as manager, and the Marlins reach the playoffs as a wild card. They go on to win their second World Series, with MVP Josh Beckett beating the Yankees 2-0 in Game 6 for the title.

Under new coach Cam Cameron, the Dolphins endure the worst season in their history, winning just one game, in Week 14 over Baltimore. Cameron and General Manager Randy Mueller are both fired at season’s end.

Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez throws the fourth no-hitter in franchise history, beating Arizona 2-0; rookie manager Joe Girardi is voted the NL Manager of the Year; and Hanley Ramirez wins the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

2008 The Dolphins hire Bill Parcells as president of football operations, Jeff Ireland as general manager and Tony Sparano as head coach, and undergo the greatest single-season turnaround in NFL history, finishing 11-5 and winning the AFC East. However, the Dolphins also released long-time star Zach Thomas, traded Jason Taylor and fell 27-9 to Baltimore in what is to date the franchise’s last playoff game.

2005-06 The Heat wins its first league championship, and Dwyane Wade is named Finals MVP.

SOUTH FLORIDA CULTURE

Although South Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, relentlessly warm weather and water sports, there has been plenty of cultural growth in the past 25 years.

The Muvico Palace mega movie theater opens on Airport Road in Boca Raton. It is one of the first theaters to offer VIP seating with dinner and bar service. The theater was sold in 2009 and became the Cinemark Palace 20.

1998 Butterfly World in Coconut Creek opens its Lorikeet Encounter, where visitors can interact with the beautiful rainbowcolored birds. Two years prior, in 1996, Butterfly World opened the country’s largest free-flight hummingbird aviary, Jewels of the Sky.

1999 Ultra Music Festival is founded in Miami Beach and draws thousands of electronic music fans to the beach. The annual event happens simultaneously with Winter Music Conference.

1996

1990 Coral Springs Center for the Arts opens; Flamingo Gardens opens its Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary with the Bird of Prey Center and a half-acre Free-flight Aviary featuring the 5 ecological zones of South Florida. The sanctuary houses permanently injured or non-releasable Florida native wildlife.

Coral Sky Amphitheatre opens. The 19,000-seat West Palm Beach venue has packed in crowds for acts from Aerosmith to Brad Paisley. The venue is famous for changing its name. In 2000, it was renamed Mars Music Amphitheatre. Three years later, it became Sound Advice Amphitheatre. In 2008, it was renamed Cruzan Amphitheatre. In February 2015, the legendary music venue went back to its original name, Coral Sky Amphitheatre, but only for a few months. In late July, it was renamed the Perfect Vodka Amphitheatre.

1992 The Museum of Discovery and Science (previously the Discovery Center) opens in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Four years later, the museum gained a highly sought-after attraction when its 300-seat IMAX theater was upgraded with 3D projection capability. Now called the AutoNation IMAX Theater, it was improved again in 2014 with an even larger screen, new seats and a digital projection system.

1991 The Broward Center for the Performing Arts opens in downtown Fort Lauderdale with a performance of The Phantom of the Opera; Mizner Park in Boca Raton opens.

1992 The Kravis Center opens in West Palm Beach with Burt Reynolds as the Master of Ceremonies. According to Kravis.org, more than 2,000 people attended the gala grand opening, which included performances by Ella Fitzgerald, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and Lily Tomlin.

2002 Art Basel’s U.S. show comes to Miami Beach. The international art world as well as locals have flocked to the magic city annually to view art by thousands of artists. Celebrities from Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland and Naomi Campbell to Beyonce, Miley Cyrus and Jay-Z have attended the event during the years.

2003 Parrot Jungle Island (formerly Parrot Jungle and Gardens) opens on Watson Island in Miami. It is renamed Jungle Island a few years later.

2004 The MTV Music Video Awards air live from American Airlines Arena in Miami; Jessica Simpson, Kanye West, Usher and Outkast are among the many performers. The MTV VMAs returned to Miami the following year, but due to a rough tropical storm, which later gained strength to become Hurricane Katrina, many of the pre-shows were cancelled. Celebrities arriving to the arena via yachts instead of limos also caused a commotion on the ocean.

2011 2005 The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, which is now the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, sold more than 700,000 tickets in 2005 when artifacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb were displayed. The exhibition broke all previous museum attendance records, according to the museum.

The Rapids Water Park adds the Rapids Racers, a $2 million six-lane water slide, to its list of attractions. The park opened in 1979 in West Palm Beach with just four water slides; it now has 35. It also features a 1950 Herschell Carousel with 30 horses. The artificial wave surfing system FlowRider was added in 2013. Unlike many South Florida tourist attractions, such as Atlantis and Grand Prix Race-O-Rama, The Rapids is still riding strong with an estimated 400,000 visitors per year, according to the park.

2011 The Museum of Discovery and Science opens its EcoDiscovery Center wing in 2011. The 34,000-square-foot addition teaches visitors the importance of environmental protection and offers guests a look a prehistoric Florida, a chance to enjoy the jovial nature of North American river otters and a hurricane wind simulation, as well as a simulated airboat cruise through the Everglades.

2006 The spectacular Carnival Center opens in Miami.

2010 Metrozoo changes its name to Zoo Miami

MY LITTLE PONY EQUESTRIA GIRLS: FRIENDSHIP GAMES In 2013’s original film “My Little Pony Equestria Girls,” Twilight Sparkle’s crown was stolen from the Crystal Empire, and she pursued the thief, Sunset Shimmer, into an alternate world where she finds herself turned into a teenage girl. In this new movie, the ponies’ journey through high school continues. Canterlot High meets its rival school, Crystal Prep Academy, in a competition that’s a long-standing tradition: The Friendship Games, a series of exciting events such as archery, motocross and roller skating. Sunset Shimmer is tasked with keeping magic out of the games to keep things fair while she and her friends compete against Crystal Prep’s top students, who are led by someone with an equal amount of interest in Equestrian magic – this world’s Twilight Sparkle. Coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on Oct. 13.

Breastfeeding is good for both babies and mothers. It provides the right nutritional ingredients as well as antibodies from the mother’s body that can help the infant fight off disease. That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of life. Research studies have shown that mothers who breastfeed are able to lose their pregnancy weight gains more quickly and have a lower risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer later in life. Breastfeeding can also save money, since moms don’t have to purchase bottles, infant formula and other items, such as a travel pack. It also avoids concerns about possible additives or other substances in pre-packaged formula. However, many new mothers are nervous about breastfeeding or wonder about proper technique. Don’t be afraid to ask your nurse, midwife, doctor or lactation specialist for help. Most problems are easily resolved with a little time and practice.

Tips for new mothers Here are some suggestions for making breastfeeding a more comfortable experience:

»

Read about breastfeeding before your baby is born. If you have questions, talk to your OB-GYN doctor or nurse during a prenatal care visit.

»

Start breastfeeding your baby in the hospital, right after birth. A nurse or specialist is close at hand to get you started.

» »

Help your baby latch on to the nipple.

Be prepared for some nipple soreness when your baby starts nursing. Usually this goes away in a few days.

»

Frequent nursing for at least 15 minutes at each feeding can help to ensure a

steady supply of milk and prevent breast engorgement.

»

Eat a well-balanced, varied diet with fruits, vegetables and foods high in calcium. Milk, yogurt and cheese should be consumed in moderation. Other non-dairy, calcium-rich foods include salmon, broccoli and tofu.

»

If your baby becomes fussy after you eat a certain food or spice, avoid that food for a few days.

» »

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Having a daily cup of coffee (if this is your routine) is usually not a problem, unless your baby seems restless or jittery afterward.

»

If you experience an itching or burning sensation on the breast, tell your doctor, as this could be a sign of infection. Fortunately, most mothers can continue to nurse even if they are feeling ill.

»

Because nicotine and other chemicals from cigarettes are found in breast milk, now is an ideal time to stop smoking. Your doctor may have recommendations on how to quit.

If you are returning to work, you can use a breast pump and storage container to continue breastfeeding your baby. Keep breast milk refrigerated, and try to use it in one or two days. Continue breastfeeding at home. Remember that it’s natural to feel unsure about breastfeeding if you’ve never nursed a baby before. You can talk with family and friends, join a support group, or get specific advice from a lactation consultant. Your baby will be glad you did!

Making Summer Safe ffor or S South outth F Florida’s lorida’s C Children hild dren

Now that August is here, school is on the horizon. No matter what grade your child is about to enter, there’s the yearly back-to-school checklist of to-dos like shopping for school supplies, filling out permission forms and, of course, scheduling your child’s pediatric visit at Care Resource. The backto- school season is a convenient time for putting the exam on your family’s schedule and make sure that your school-age children, from preschoolers to college students receive their vaccines. During the month of August, new clients without Health Insurance can receive a free comprehensive check-up and their required vaccinations for school including, but not limited to vaccinations for polio, chicken-pox, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), DTap and Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis). New clients can also receive a NEW back-toschool backpack. To redeem this promotion, one MUST first make an appointment. To make an appointment, call 305-576-1234 EXT: 470 (English) and 471 (Spanish). As it is still summer-time, it is the season for kids to enjoy different indoor and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, here in South Florida, the heat can take its toll on the body. Heat-related illness happens when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. Infants and children up to 4 years of age are at greatest risk. Even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. According to Alicia Fernandez-Garcia, MD, Pediatrician with Care Resource, “For heat-related illness, the best defense is prevention. Dressing infants and children in loose, lightweight, lightcolored clothing is always a great idea, scheduling outdoor activities carefully, for morning and evening hours are always smart too. In addition, just a few serious sunburns can increase you and your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs

protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. Don’t forget to cover up. Clothing that covers your and your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. Here at Care Resource, during your visit this summer, one can receive a special Care Resource branded SPF (sun protection factor) 30 sunscreen”.
