Draw a circle on the blue or black paper about 6 inches in diameter. Using the chalk, draw a winter scene inside the circle. Cut out or use a hole punch to make confetti from the white paper. Sprinkle the white confetti paper pieces over the chalk drawing. Carefully place packing tape over the entire circle and confetti. Then cut out the circle drawing covered with confetti and packing tape and attach it to a piece of paper with glue to make the bottom of the snow globe. Louisa Kopp is a South Jersey mom and writer. here’s a lot to love in this issue, starting with our travel features. If you vowed to make more memories with your family this year, whether you have a budget for a day trip to Pitman, Gloucester County (page 14) or a vacation to Punta Cana’s best resort, Barceló Bávaro Palace, (page 16), we'll make it easy for you to keep your promise. Fun fact: Turning phones off for a week gets teens talking and playing outside. My family enjoyed ourselves in Punta Cana during teacher convention week back in early November. I decided years ago when the kids were still in elementary school after a challenging week of trying to get the kids off tech and out on day

trips that the following year we’d go on vacation during teacher convention week. Over the last seven years we created wonderful memories that we can reflect on for years to come. There are other ways for your kids to look back on their time with you fondly and that is being in service to the community. South Jersey has countless food banks (page 22) to help food insecure families throughout the area. Your family could have a food drive and collect canned goods to make a donation to one of the many organizations that help families in the area. Here’s an idea, when you invite friends over to watch the Super Bowl ask them to bring a bag of non-perishable food items. I’ll post this on the South Jersey MOM Facebook page and you can post photos of your collections. Contact the South Jersey Food Bank, listed on page 22, if you need help finding a food bank close to you. If you promised yourself you’d exercise more this year, it might be useful to find a friend to reach the goal. Trend Up Friend Up, page 8, will encourage accountability with your exercise regimen to see results. Taking care of yourself and giving back may be the best things we can all do for our hearts.✲ Your friend & fellow MOM,

Is Your Child Ready to Play an Instrument?
M
By Shannon Cahill
usic becomes an essential part of life at an early age. From babies bobbing back and forth to the beat of their favorite songs to toddlers banging pots and pans with a spatula. Parents see their child’s interest in music and wonder “Is my child ready to learn a musical instrument?” According to Dr. Robert A. Cutietta, who received his doctorate in music education and psychology from Pennsylvania State University, “There is a growing (and convincing) body of research that indicates a “window of opportunity” from birth to age nine for developing a musical sensibility within children.” If your child is showing an interest in music you can bring them to music classes starting at six months old. These early age classes teach them how to have a fun relationship with music. Great ways to interest your baby/toddler is to play games with music, have dance parties, sing songs and let them see others playing an instrument. 6 | February 2018
Age three is when kids can really start to recognize different things in music such as a beat or melody. This makes it a perfect age to introduce them to the different sounds each instrument makes. If they are showing interest at this stage you can attend a more “formal” parent/child music class that will help them learn with you. For this class to be productive, make sure your child can sit and

concentrate for 10-30 minutes at a time and that he/she can follow directions. It’s important that their fine motor skills are up to par. For example, can your child color moderately well “within the lines” of a coloring book? Having this kind of control is very important when learning an instrument. Age five is when group or solo music lessons can start. The best instruments for beginners is the piano, keyboard or violin. Sign them up for a class to see how they like it. If all goes well, consider renting the instrument he/she is interested in so that they can practice at home without you having to dish out a ton of money on something that may not last. Valerie DAmbrosio, from Pottstown, P.A. finds that renting the instrument for her teenage daughter is the best option for them. “I rent to own our flute, this way if at any time she doesn’t want to play anymore they will take the instrument back or she can try something else.”
“Kids always learn better when it’s a ‘want’. If they show passion or interest starting age doesn’t matter” If you child is older have them join their school band so they can try different instruments and find one they feel comfortable with. As children get older it’s harder to get them to practice. It’s important that your child is musically motivated and willing to set aside time to practice their instrument multiple times a week on their own. Tara Chester, from Pine Hill, N.J. says her 10-year-old daughter Gionna, “has to practice her clarinet four times a week, not including her school band practices.” Scott Pieczara, a music teacher at AP Schalick High School in Pittsgrove, N.J. says, “Kids always learn better when it’s a ‘want’. If they show passion or interest starting age doesn’t matter.”

TREND UP FRIEND UP
By Matthew Brenner and Rochelle Gilken
L
ooking to start a new workout and want to step into the trends of 2018? We’re not talking about goat yoga here. (It’s a real thing.) To keep up with the focused fitness industry trends of 2018, it’s not about fad. It’s simply: Get tech and tell your friends. We always have the same goals: eat better, lose weight, exercise more often. But every year we grow and evolve and prefer different methods to reach those goals. The trend now is all about sharing your fitness journey, whether it’s in person through dynamic group classes with accountability or the latest technology apps. Group classes are growing. A class structure that’s gaining in popularity is one that allows participants to interact with other people in it. Having a partner workout or engaging fitness helps increase accountability and maintain interest for a longer period of time. Soul Cycle, Zumba and those traditional step classes (who remembers those?) are group classes with an instructor who teaches everyone at the same time, but each person does an individual workout. With innovative classes, students work together to complete goals and motivate each other. CrossFit gyms incorporate aspects of teamwork and competition into the workout. A bonus trend for parents is fitness classes that provide parents and children the chance to participate together. This is a trend with popular fitness programs such as yoga as well as martial arts because they provide a safe and challenging environment for all ages. Rather than parents dropping off their kids for an activity or sitting in the waiting area, parents maximize their time by joining their child’s class. Parents don’t want to give up on their goals anymore, but still prioritize their children. This trend accomplishes both. The American College of Sports Medicine Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2018 placed HIIT training at the top of the list for trends, replacing wearable technology, which dropped to the third spot. HIIT training is high intensity bursts of training for short periods of time. Fitness professionals will write the workout on a whiteboard with quick intense challenges. 8 | February 2018
Technology continues to transform how we workout. The FitBit is a trend from the past few years that continues to be extremely popular. But it’s not simply about collecting your steps like a pedometer of the past. It’s about having the opportunity to share it, to set a goal and track it over time with technology. Apps such as MyFitnessPal and Nike+ Training take the sharing to friends who can help to provide encouragement and affirmation. There are even apps such as Step Bet in which you can bet on your weight loss, providing a financial incentive for meeting your goal. What’s next in technology? Fitness games such as Wii are clearing the way for new Virtual Reality workout adventures. Look for those to keep setting a new technology wave. Whether you try it or not, you can make sure your ideal body is a reality if you commit to any of these fitness trends.

Cord Blood Offers Hope By Dolores Hoffman
C
ord blood banking involves collecting blood left in the umbilical cord and placenta and storing it for future medical use. Cord blood contains potentially lifesaving cells that can later be used to treat a host of diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma just to name a few. Here is some information that can help you make a decision that’s best for your family. HOW IS CORD BLOOD COLLECTED? After your baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. A needle is then inserted to collect the blood. The collection process is painless and safe for you and your baby, and it doesn’t interfere with your labor or delivery. Ideally, you should pick a blood cord bank in your second trimester and make your doctor or mid-wife aware of your choice ahead of time. WHERE IS IT STORED? More than 1 million units of cord blood are stored in blood banks in the United States. Be sure to select a bank that has passed FDA inspections. Scientists say that cryogenically preserved cells have no expiration date, and frozen cord blood should be sustainable for decades. WHAT MAKES CORD BLOOD CELLS DIFFERENT? • Cord blood stem cells are younger compared to adult stem cells. • There is less risk of complications when used in transplants. 10 | February 2018
More than 1 million units of cord blood are stored in blood banks in the United States • They are immediately available and can minimize disease progression in early treatment. • Because they are frozen, cells are protected from aging and being exposed to environmental factors that can decrease their purpose. • They are unique which makes them viable for treatment of many autoimmune diseases. COSTS According to the Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood Foundation, blood banks charge a first-year processing fee that ranges from about $1,000 to $3,000, plus annual storage costs of about $90 to $175. The banks offer payment plans, ranging from no-interest installments paid over a few months to longer-term financing with interest. For most insurance plans, cord blood banking is not a covered service. Families with a history of leukemia or lymphatic conditions may be eligible for insurance to cover some portion of the cord blood banking expense.

AUTISM AND STEM CELLS Children in clinical trials are being treated with their own cord blood for autism, a condition that affects 1 in 68 children. The Sutter Institute of Medical Research conducted a study involving children with autism and it showed very promising results. Thirty children with autism and ranging in age from two years to seven years old received an infusion of their cord blood stem cells stored at birth. Afterwards, the participants were regularly tested. Sixty percent of the parents of the children who participated in the study said they saw moderate to significant improvements, especially in language and social skills. If you are an expectant parent, talk with your doctor about the choices that may be available to you. By making this decision, you can have the umbilical cord blood collected and possibly save a life.

FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS Finding out you’re going to be a parent can be both exciting and stressful. But preparation makes for a smoother transition. To help, Lindsay Pinchuk, mother of two, and founder and CEO of Bump Club and Beyond, a “mommy hub,” is offering 10 mental and logistical preparation tips:
1
GET A BOUNCER. Decide who’s invited into the delivery room and let the nurses and your loved ones or partner enforce your policy.
2
BE CEO OF YOUR FAMILY. When it comes to parenting decisions, listen to advice, but don’t be pressured into not doing what’s best for your family.
3
BUMP UP YOUR SOCIAL CIRCLE. Friends with kids around the same age as yours can be a valuable asset for parenting advice and get-togethers. Event companies like Bump Club and Beyond help connect moms and moms-to-be. Bringing a baby into the world is hard work. Accept help from friends and family.
4
SHOWER YOURSELF. When creating a registry, don’t overlook useful items you’ll need the most. Include diapers, like Huggies Little Snugglers, which provide outstanding skin care for your newborn’s delicate skin. Wipes are also essential. Look for ones with Triple Clean Layers that are tough on messes and gentle on skin, such as Huggies Natural Care Wipes.
More tips and expert advice are available at Huggies.com. 12 | February 2018

GET INFORMED. Take an infant CPR class. Bring your significant other and anyone who will be caring for the baby. LEARN BASICS. Find a class that teaches basics, such as how to diaper, swaddle and bathe your baby. READ THE MANUAL. Babies don’t come with a manual, but their gear does. Be sure to read life-saving information like your car seat manual. HUG IT OUT. Skin-to-skin contact with the baby right after birth helps regulate the baby’s breathing and heartbeat, and keeps him or her warm and prepared to nurse. PACK EARLY. Pack your hospital bag a few weeks beforehand. The hospital is no hotel, so don’t forget shampoo, conditioner an extra pillow, flip flops for the shower, a robe and an extra bag. HOARD. Many hospitals will send you home with ice packs, disposable underwear and other supplies to help aid recovery. Take what you can! Still stressed? Take a deep breath and relax in the knowledge that no matter what happens, the love you’ll feel for your baby is indescribable.

summer camp guide
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
WHEN CHOOSING A CAMP
F
or over 20 years, Renee Flax, Camper Placement Specialist for the American Camp Association, NY and NJ, has been helping parents find the right camp for their children. We asked her a few questions on what parents should focus on when trying to find the right camp for their child and here’s what she had to say.
“Touring is a wonderful way for a parent and the future camper to see a camp in action”
What is the first thing parents should do when beginning to think about camp? The first thing is to consider your child’s attributes and your family’s needs. You want to be able to describe your child to a camp director. Think about how long you want your child to go to camp for. Are you a family of two working parents so you will need a camp for the entire summer or are you just looking for a few weeks every summer and intend to do something else as a family. If cost is a concern, not for profits are less expensive then private camps and sometimes offer financial assistance. If you begin to articulate the answers to these questions, you will have a sense of what you want and can begin your search.
Where should parents begin their search? The search can be accomplished in multiple ways. You can call me at the American Camp Association, NY and NJ for free, one-on-one objective advice. Speaking with family and friends about where their children go is a good starting point but the big caveat is that if they are a very different family then yours and their child has very different interests than yours, you may not have a great fit in the end. This is not a one size fits all category! Do your research thoroughly and it will pay off in the end. 18 || February February 2018 2018 18
How important is it to tour the camp and meet the camp director before deciding? Touring is a wonderful way for a parent and the future camper to see a camp in action. I would recommend touring while a camp is in session if possible. Meeting and speaking with the camp director is the number one reason to select or not pick at camp! I cannot stress this enough. You must know ahead of time who the camp director is, what they consider to be a successful summer for a child at their camp and what their philosophy is on running their camp.
What do you want parents to know about the process of choosing a camp? First, try not to get stressed! You also don’t want to wait for the last minute to pick a camp because then you will be making an uninformed decision. Include your child in the process and let their voice be heard (but letting them know the final decision is yours!) Ask for references from the camp so that you can have honest and frank conversations with other parents whose children attend the camp and always be honest and above board with the camp director. They must know who you are as a family and what will work best for your child while at their camp. Consider this a partnership with the camp director—you want to be on the same page with them about what is best for you child but if you don’t tell them what you want/need then they won’t know. Enjoy the process — you are about to give your child the gift of camp that will enable them to develop skills of resilience and self confidence that will last them a lifetime!

Helping the Needy Survive in South Jersey By Cheryl Lynne Potter
T
he statistics are startling. Over 196,000 people living in South Jersey are hungry, according to a study done by Feeding America, called “Map the Meal Gap,” that gives food banks an idea of what hunger looks like in their state and throughout America. While the economy is improving, millions of Americans, according to the study, are “still struggling to get by because of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living.” In New Jersey, “Map the Meal Gap” found 13.1% of individuals living in the 4-county area served by the Food Bank of South Jersey, face food insecurity. “We describe food insecurity as a measure of a person’s uncertainty as to where their next meal may come from at any given time due to a variety of ever-changing factors,” said Lauren Hann, Senior Manager of Communications for the Food Bank of South Jersey that assists individuals in Gloucester, Camden, Burlington and Salem Counties. “Food insecurity affects seniors living on a fixed income, people facing sudden medical emergencies, parents struggling with bills, and their children who rely on school meals to get the adequate nutrition they require to lead healthy lives,” said Hann. Children, who experience hunger, face such health risks as impaired physical and developmental growth, behavior problems, sudden mood changes, low academic achievement and learning disabilities. Fortunately, many organizations in South Jersey are helping to dispense food to the needy. St. Paul’s ELC Food Pantry of Collingwood is affiliated with the Food Bank of South Jersey and serves individuals in need from Collingswood, Woodlynne, Oaklyn, Haddon Township, Haddonfield, Audubon and Haddon Heights. The pantry provides 22 | February 2018
canned, dry and as available fresh groceries, as well as some baby food items and, if available, such personal items like razors, shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes, said Alan Rodgers, Treasurer of the church’s food pantry. The pantry, which is made-up of volunteers, serves about 84 clients per week, year-round, and provides assistance to about 600 individuals per month. The pantry is open Tuesday thru Thursday, between 11am to 2pm. “We were looking for another way to make a difference in the lives of people in our community,” said Reverend Carol Davies of Bethel United Methodist Church, located in Sewell. “There are a few food pantries in our township, but none were open on the weekends. We wanted to make food available for people who may be working during the week, or in the evenings,” said Reverend Davies. The church runs Peter’s Pantry that serves residents of Gloucester County and assists about 200 to 250 individuals per month. The pantry is open the fourth Saturday of every month from 10 am to 2 pm. Besides distributing food to nearly 5,000 individuals each year, Kitchen of Hope at St.Thomas Episcopal Church in Glassboro, also provides weekend meals to about 40 students at Glassboro’s J. Harvey Rodgers Elementary School. “These are children who receive free school meals, but may not have anything to eat at home during the weekend, said Vivian Hanson, President of Hope, Inc. Board of Trustees. The food giveaway is the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10am to 1pm. Donating to food banks is a “great way to give back to the community,” said Reverend Davies. “And it’s local, so it has a direct positive impact on the towns where we live.”

recipe corner
Bake up something sweet for the sweeties in your life, like this decadent chocolate cake or these lemony heart-shaped cookies. Two recipes perfect to make for those you love this Valentine’s Day! DECADENT CHOCOLATE CAKE
CREAM CHEESE LEMONY HEART COOKIES • 2 sticks butter, softened • 1 pkg. (3 oz.) cream cheese, room temperature • 1 cup raw sugar • 1 large egg • 2 tsp. lemon zest, finely chopped • 2 tbs. fresh lemon juice • 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, sifted • 1 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder • 3/4 tsp. sea salt • Confectioners’ sugar, for sprinkling
Preheat oven to 375º. Place butter and cream cheese into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until creamy. Add in raw sugar, egg, lemon zest, and lemon juice, mix well. In a medium sized bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture into butter mixture on low speed. Place a small amount of cookie dough into a pastry bag fitted with a large French tip (such as Ateco #865). Holding tip very close to the surface, pipe 3 – 4 inch hearts onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper, space cookies 1 inch apart. Refill pastry bag as needed with remaining dough. Bake cookies until golden brown on bottom, about 12 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets on wire racks, Once completely cool, sprinkle hearts with confectioners’ sugar. Cookies can be stored in airtight containers at room temperature up to 3 days. Note: You can pipe heart outline, or pipe filled heart cookies by piping more dough into the center of each heart.
• 1 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour • 1 cup less 1 tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 1/4 tsp. baking soda • 1/8 tsp. sea salt
• 1 1/2 sticks butter, softened • 2/3 cup raw sugar • 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Preheat oven to 350°. Line bottoms of two 9-inch round cake pans with waxed or parchment paper. Grease paper and sides of pans with non-stick cooking spray. In a bowl mix flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, beat butter, and sugars at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. At low speed, alternately beat flour mixture and buttermilk into butter mixture just until blended. Divide batter equally between prepared cake pans. Bake cakes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, approximately 25-30 minutes. Transfer pans to wire racks to cool for 10 minutes. Turn out cakes onto racks, remove paper and turn cakes top side up, and allow to cool completely
INDULGENT CHOCOLATE FROSTING
• 2 sticks butter, softened • 2 cup confectioner’s sugar, sifted • 6 ounces (6 squares) unsweetened chocolate, melted • 4 tsp. pure vanilla extract • Chocolate shavings for decoration, optional In a bowl, beat butter and confectioner’s sugar at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add melted chocolate and vanilla, continue beating until shiny and smooth. Place 1 cake onto a serving dish, spread with frosting. Top with second cake, spread frosting on top and sides of cake. Let cake stand for at least 30 minutes before sprinkling with chocolate shavings. As always, Bon Appetit!

How to Keep Your Newborn Safe this Flu Season
Flu season is upon us. Keep your baby healthy and safe by taking the proper precautions.
Dr. Jeffrey Seiden, Medical Director for Pediatric Services, Virtua Health System, Associate Medical Director, CHOP at Virtua Pediatric Emergency Medicine, suggests parents take the following steps to avoid exposure to the flu. Limit newborn visits to close family and friends for the first two months of life. Practice good hygiene with soap and water, and/or alcohol-based sanitizers. Limit close face-to-face contact between small children and babies. Allow small siblings and visitors to touch only the baby’s feet after washing their hands. Ask frequent visitors and/or caregivers to receive a flu shot. Require visitors with symptoms of illness (fever, runny nose, cough, congestion) to refrain from visiting until they are well.
In the event that your baby does get sick with the flu or another illness, Dr. Seiden says keeping your baby hydrated is crucial. Also, always monitor your child for signs of respiratory distress, such as an inability to breastfeed, suck or drink fluids. This may be because they are working so hard to breathe. Most importantly, if you are not comfortable with your baby’s behavior – whether it’s feeding or breathing issues, or if something just doesn’t feel right – have your baby evaluated by a pediatrician or pediatric emergency physician.
For more information on how to better care for your newborn at home, go to Virtua.org/MyBaby.
