101 THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER!
Dangers New Moms Face After Childbirth By: Nicole Lamborne, MD, Virtua OB/GYN and Program Director for Virtua Women’s Health Shailen Shah, MD, Medical Director and Lead Physician – Virtua Maternal-Fetal Medicine
A new report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other research partners shows that women in the U.S. have a higher risk of childbirth-related death than in other developed nations. Many of these deaths may be preventable. Here’s what you can do to lower your risk of deadly postpartum complications.
Start with a Healthy You Talk to your doctor about what you can do to be in the best possible health before you become pregnant. This can help you avoid complications during and after pregnancy. Receive Prenatal Care Attend all of your prenatal appointments, take all medications as directed, and undergo tests or procedures that your doctor recommends. Know the Warning Signs During your pregnancy, you should also look for symptoms that could point to a serious health condition, such as: • Chest pain, heart palpitations, severe swelling or shortness of breath when lying flat, which could be a sign of heart problems. • Severe headaches, rapid weight gain, high blood pressure or vision changes, which could be a sign of preeclampsia. • Strong feelings of anxiety or wanting to hurt yourself.
Virtua.org 2 | June 2018
Continued Awareness After Childbirth Be mindful of your physical and mental condition during your hospital stay and when you return home. Continue to take all of your medications as directed. Your partner or other loved ones should also be aware of the signs of postpartum complications so they can help you look out for symptoms that include: • Postpartum depression Symptoms include crying spells, feeling sad all the time, feelings of panic or needing to escape and thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby. • Hemorrhage Pay close attention to how much you’re bleeding during the two weeks following delivery. If you have heavy bleeding that soaks more than one large sanitary pad per hour, call your doctor or go to the hospital right away. • Infection Signs of infection include a bad smell or drainage from the site of the infection, elevated heart rate, fever higher than 100.4, low blood pressure and pain at the site of the infection. • Heart disease Heart disease can cause a range of symptoms that are similar to common pregnancy symptoms, such as mild swelling or shortness of breath. However, signs of trouble could include chest pain, severe swelling, severe shortness of breath or heart palpitations. If these symptoms continue or become worse after your baby is born, go to the hospital or call your doctor right away.

EDITOR about just growing up, it’s about being a grownup. High school graduation says, “OK, world. I’m ready. Let’s see where to go from here. It’s time for change and I’m ready to show you what I got.” As his mom, I have no choice, but to be ready, and take a step back and watch him fly from the nest and create a life for himself. It has been one of my greatest emotional challenges over the last year to undo the life we have built around him, he needed me to let go, so he could go. I trust the boy to embrace all that life gives him. I trust he’s ready and can handle whatever life throws his way, and if not, he’ll certainly learn from it, as we all do. Happy Graduation to the Class of 2018!

une is the milestone month as graduates are closing chapters. It seems like yesterday my boy sized-up his new kindergarten classmates as he stepped into line and let go of my hand. How can it be? I wrote here four years ago when he entered high schooI and gave him advice to stay organized, be involved with school activities and to be kind. Trust me, if there was a pause button on life I would have considered hitting it a long time ago so I could keep him small a little longer. Now, he’s on the verge of another milestone, only this one involves big changes. This milestone isn’t

should receive a hearing screening within the first three weeks of life. Children who fail the hearing test should be retested by three months of age. Hearing Developmental Norms Newborn: startles at sudden, loud noises 3 months: recognizes parent’s/parents’ voice(s) 6 months: turns eyes or head toward sound 12 months: imitates sound, produces simple words
SPEECH and HEARING
IMPAIRMENTS By Fiona Paterna
H
ave you expressed, “I wish he could just tell me what he wants!” or “It’s like he doesn’t even hear what I’m saying!” When speech and language milestones don’t occur as expected, you may compare your child to older siblings, consult a pediatrician, or conduct research. Speech vs. Language Speech and language are often confused. Amy Nelson, MA, CCC-SLP explains, “Speech is the “verbal expression of language and includes articulation,” while language is the “entire system of expressing and receiving information.” Language encompasses verbal, nonverbal, and written communication. Children may experience difficulty with speech, language, or both. What’s “Normal”? Infant: Reacts to sound, coos, babbles, forms word, recognizes names of common objects. 12-15 months: Babbles and imitates sounds, says one or more words spontaneously, follows one-step directions. 18-24 months: By 18 months, says about 20 words. By age two, says about 50 words, forms simple sentences, identifies common objects, and follows two-step commands. 2-3 years: Uses increased vocabulary, forms three-word sentences; by age three, comprehends prepositions, color, and size. Types of Speech Impairments w Articulation: incorrect sound production. w Fluency: “flow of speech is disrupted by sounds, syllables, and repeated words, prolonged, or avoided and where there may be silent blocks or inappropriate inhalation, exhalation, or phonation patterns” (National 6 | June 2018
Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities). w Voice: abnormal voice quality. w Language: difficult verbal expression and comprehension. w Causes of Delayed Speech or Language w Oral Impairments: problems with the tongue, palate, or frenulum. w Oral-motor problems: difficulty coordinating the lips, tongue, and jaw to produce speech sounds. w Part of Another Puzzle: part of a general developmental delay. w Hearing Problems: chronic ear infections.
“As a parent, you know your child best, and if concerned, have your child evaluated” Hearing Impairments According to Thierry Morlet, PhD, “Hearing impairment “occurs when there’s a problem with damage to one or more parts of the ear” and “about 28 million Americans are deaf or hearing impaired.” Hearing impairments are detected by various types of hearing screenings. All 50 states implemented an Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program to identify children born with hearing loss before three months old and provide intervention services by six months old. Newborns are not discharged from the hospital until they receive a hearing screening; children born at home

Signs and Causes of Hearing Loss Parents should be aware of slow vocabulary development, short, simple sentence construction, and academic and social difficulty. Causes of hearing loss are: w Congenital: refers to hearing loss present at birth (1-3/1000 babies) w Sensorineural: involves “malformation, dysfunction, or damage” to inner ear or auditory nerve, is caused by genetics, injuries, loud noises, medications, disease or illnesses, or complications during birth or pregnancy; usually permanent w Conductive: caused by interruption of sound to the inner ear, frequently due to ear infections; usually mild, temporary, and treatable w Acquired: result of a disease, condition, or injury w Mixed: sensorineural + conductive hearing loss w Central: cochlea works properly, brain communication problem, less frequently occurring, more difficult to treat w Noise-induced: caused by extremely loud noises w Otitis Media: inflammation of middle ear, usually with fluid that may/may not be infected. Without signs of infection, OM may go unnoticed, causing the child to miss significant listening experiences that affect speech and language development. What’s Next? Your pediatrician may refer your child to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist for a hearing test, or to early intervention services for an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist who will measure current speech and language skills and recommend a remedial program. Rebecca Stanwood, RN, CPNP, states, “Children are often referred between 15-24 months due to delayed speech and hearing concerns.” Stacey DiMeo, a Speech and Language Specialist, states, “Under the age of three, families can contact their local Early Intervention Agency. After age three, families can contact their neighborhood public school. As a parent, you know your child best, and if concerned, have your child evaluated. Having a speech-language pathologist look at your child will alleviate your worries or give your child the help he or she needs. www.southjerseymom.com

WHY KIDS LIE By Kelly Moore, Psy.D.
L
ying. It’s one of those behaviors that causes parents the most distress—in part because we feel powerless when it occurs. When our children lie, and are found out later to be doing so, we try to help them understand the importance of trust. But why do kids lie? Is it a phase? Is it an indicator of future behaviors? Will we ever really trust them? Before you get yourself too upset about your child’s recent rocky relationship with the truth, consider a few reasons why kids may opt out of the truth. They are scared Kids that fear the consequences of their actions may either tell a lie, or omit information so they can avoid the feared outcome. A way to combat that is to try to remain calm if you need to question them about something. If you are looming over, shouting and demanding answers, you are less likely to get them to admit that they did something they shouldn’t have done. If you must hand down a consequence, do so calmly. It’s important for children to know that if they do something wrong, the situation becomes worse if they lie. They are in phase (albeit an annoying one) At younger ages, some kids lie for what seems 10 | June 2018
like no reason at all, or just to get some extra attention. They are telling a story and they add details that are either impossible or easily proven to be untrue. When adults do that at parties, we call it embellishing, but when kids do it, parents worry they are staring into the eyes of a future criminal! Relax. When kids are very young and do that, use that as a teachable moment to remind them of the difference between fact and fiction. “No sweetie, you went for a ride on a pony. It was not a flying unicorn, but that would have been cool, right?” Remember, your reaction and response is key in helping your child to recognize the importance of truth-telling. They are modeling what they hear/see This one may sting parents, but ask yourself: “Do I lie from time to time?” Remember, your children live with you and are watching all that you do. If you are someone who often “embellishes” while on the phone, at parties, or on social media, this may also explain why you catch your very own darlings doing the same from time to time. None of us are perfect, but if honesty is something we want our kids to value, we have to demonstrate it as much as we possibly can.
When calling advertisers, please say you saw it in SJMOM!
Of course, there are instances when lying can become such a habit, that we really should be worried about our child. If you notice patterns of lying and refusal to tell the truth, even when there is clear evidence of their dishonesty, this may be something more serious that
“Lying. It’s one of those behaviors that causes parents the most distress—in part because we feel powerless when it occurs” will need more of your time and attention to resolve. Feelings of anxiety, depression, or even negative social experiences at school can be related to lying as a means to cover up very difficult emotions. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you think your child’s lying has gotten out of control and you need more support to get to the heart of the problem.

INFO EVERY FAMILY NEEDS TO KNOW By Meg Kevane, Owner of Goldfish Swim School Mount Laurel
W
ater safety is a topic that impacts all families. Every adult who supervises children needs to know basic information on how to keep kids safe in and around water.
When it comes to drowning, the statistics are pretty staggering. Drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children ages one to four—and the second leading cause of injury death for children ages one to 14, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Accidents can happen quickly. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water and in as little time as 20 seconds. Keep the following water safety tips in mind: • Any time kids are around water, designate a “water watcher” who will avoid cell phones, conversations, magazines and anything else that might distract the adult from watching swimming children EVERY SINGLE SECOND. After all, most children who drown are supervised. • The American Red Cross says that the number one thing that parents can do to keep kids safer around water is to enroll them in swim
lessons. Swimming is an essential life-saving skill with numerous physical, mental and intellectual benefits. • Get swim lessons for yourself or any other caregiver who cannot swim or is afraid of water. • Realize that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are created as water toys, not life-saving devices. Life jackets should be designated as U.S. Coast Guard-approved. • Know that even the most seasoned swimmers can still encounter trouble. Make sure swimmers don’t overestimate their skills and that they understand the importance of never swimming alone. About Goldfish Swim School Goldfish Swim School Mount Laurel provides swim instruction to children ages 4 months to 12 years-old in a unique setting with highly trained instructors. For more information, please visit our website at www.goldfishswimschool.com.
One month of progress in just one week. Our Jump Start Clinics are a quick and easy way to get children swim ready or progressing toward their next swim level… all while learning how to be safer in and around the water.

summer camp guide
How parents can help their child have the
BEST SUMMER possible at
OVERNIGHT CAMP By Jess Michaels
T
his summer, you are giving your child one of the greatest gifts—the opportunity to go to overnight camp to gain important life skills such as independence, confidence, resilience and grit. In order for your child to have a truly successful camp experience, parents need to take a back seat and let their child thrive in the camp setting. Here are a few tips to help your child have the best summer possible:
Share positive messages – It’s normal for children to start getting nervous right before camp begins. Make sure to share positive messages with your child about camp and to answer any questions your child may have.
Don’t start cabin drama – Some moms will get on a group text with the other moms from their child’s bunk and start gossiping about things going on at camp. This can cause a lot of momma drama. Try to refrain from these texts and just like a summer at camp, take a break from the texting.
Don’t make pick up deals – Before your child leaves for camp, don’t make pick up deals and tell your child you will pick him up if he isn’t happy. By making deals, you are sending the message that you don’t believe your child will be successful at camp.
Respect camp rules –If the camp doesn’t allow things like ipads, iphones & camp packages, please respect the rules and don’t pack or send them. When you break the rules, you are sending a message to your child that rules are ok to be broken.
Pack together – Packing together is a good way for children to start to get ready for camp and they will feel more comfortable knowing what items are going to camp.
Don’t call camp every day – Obviously, call if there is a serious problem but please refrain from calling the camp with every concern you may have. Your child is at camp to navigate his way on his own and the camp staff is there to guide him.
Busing – If the camp offers bussing to camp, let your child take it. Bonding starts on the bus ride to camp and is often where the first camp friendships are formed. Online photos – Many camps post daily photos online, giving parents a glimpse into the day at camp. While these photos can be a lot of fun for parents, they also can get parents anxious. If your child isn’t smiling or is wearing the same shirt as he was the day before, don’t worry. These camp photos capture a moment in time, not the full picture of the camp experience. If something is wrong at camp, you will know about it. There is no need to call the director to ask about every photo your child is in. 24 | June 2018
Opt out of phone calls if necessary – If you know that your child will get upset hearing your voice, you can opt out of the camp phone call during the summer. While you may want to hear your child’s voice, sometimes the call can be a set-back for children who are otherwise having an amazing time at camp. Let the camp directors do their job – Camp professionals work all year long planning out a great summer for your child. Let them do their jobs! Leave the bunk placements and counselor assignments up to them.

SUMMER
HEART HEALTHY
T
RECIPES
his month I’m sharing two recipes using a heart healthy fruit, the tomato, I know that may sound confusing since many people think of the tomato as a vegetable, but in all actuality it is a fruit! But no matter what it is, tomatoes are chock full of health benefits for you and your family, (unless you are allergic of course). Tomatoes are known for their outstanding antioxidant content, including their rich concentration of lycopene, they also provide an excellent amount of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and a good amount of the mineral manganese. Some research studies show that by eating tomatoes or tomato based foods regularly, along with a healthy diet, may reduced the risk of heart disease, which is even more of a good reason to add tomatoes to your family meals as often as possible! So, until next time, eat well, sleep well, live well. Here’s to our health!
BRUSCHETTA
• 1 loaf crusty multi-grain bread, sliced • 3 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 5 fresh Italian plum tomatoes, diced small • 2 tsp. balsamic or apple cider vinegar • 4 - 5 fresh basil leaves, cut into thin shredded strips • Sea salt, to taste • Black Pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 450°. Brush each piece of bread with olive oil, place on an un-greased baking sheet and bake for 3 to 5 minutes or until lightly browned. In a bowl, combine garlic, chopped tomatoes, 1 tbs. olive oil, balsamic or apple cider vinegar, basil, salt and pepper, give a good stir then spoon mixture on top of bread slices and serve.
HOMEMADE TOMATO SAUCE • 2 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp. tomato paste • 10 -12 fresh Italian plum tomatoes, diced • 1/4 cup water • 1 tbs. raw sugar, honey, agave or natural sugar substitute • Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes • Sea salt, to taste • Black Pepper, to taste • A few leaves of fresh basil, chopped Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, stir in garlic and tomato paste, cook for 1 minute, then add tomatoes and water. Add sweetener of choice, crushed pepper flakes, and season well with salt and pepper, once the sauce comes to a boil lower the heat and cook for 25 minutes. Add the chopped basil and simmer sauce for 5-10 minutes longer. If desired, puree tomato sauce in a food processor before serving over hot cooked, and drained multigrain pasta. As always, Bon Appetit!
