Make celebrating St. Patrick’s day fun and easy with this adorable leprechaun lunch. It’s cute as can be and super fun for kids, but it’s also a healthy lunch option for the holiday. You’ll need the following for two shamrock pizzas: • Cheddar cheese • English muffin separated into 2 halves • Green pepper cut into rings for shamrock • Green pepper slice cut into rectangle for stem • Preheat oven to 425 degrees This is a simple recipe to include your little leprechaun in the preparation. Sprinkle enough cheddar cheese to cover surface of English muffin. Place pepper ring on top of cheese and add stem to look like a complete shamrock. Place in heated oven and bake for 12 minutes or until the edges are golden.

Welcome to the annual Birthday Party issue! While we always hope our pages are inspirational, this month we’re featuring South Jersey locations to throw your kid a perfect birthday extravaganza (page 16). Birthdays are meant to be fun, but with busy lives for today’s super moms, make the day hassle free and hand over the details to enjoy the day with family and friends. And, need I remind you that the clock is ticking to find the right camp for your kids this summer. This month be sure to check out “Why Children Need Camp Today More Than Ever”, (page 22). There are so many positive reasons to send your kids to camp, but the way I see it, resilience is the best skill for kids to obtain.
Jeremiah is a vibrant and energetic child who loves his mom, dad, big sister, and dog Tony. He is also a huge fan of anything that has wheels.
www.southjerseymom.com
Jess Michaels, Director of Communications at the NJ and NY divisions of the American Camp Association says, “It’s important for children to develop resilience for coping with the obstacles and stressors that inevitably will happen in their lives. At camp, children are often problem solving, adapting to change, and building confidence. These are all tools that help children to cope with hurdles they may encounter and therefore build resiliency.” I love this concept! In addition to Editor of South Jersey MOM, I am also a licensed psychotherapist (page 15) and work with teens through adults that need help with problem solving skills. So often, kids and teens are isolated in the summer on social media instead of navigating social situations in person. Attending Summer Camp allows kids of all ages to connect, navigate and make autonomous decisions every day. This month is National Nutrition Month and be sure to look for Lisa Ann’s healthy breakfast ideas (page 29) to get your kids eating more berries. Today’s generation spend so much time with a device in their hand instead of a ball. I challenge you this month to play with your kids outside: take a walk, play soccer, throw a football, collect sticks. Be adventurous! The possibilities are endless.✲ Your friend & fellow MOM,

“It’s important today for moms and even dads to spend quality time with one another or with family and friends, without their children”
M
oms wouldn’t think of trading their kids in for anything in the world. Yet, many of them need a break sometimes from their kids. It’s important today for moms and even dads to spend quality time with one another or with family and friends, without their children. However, many moms suffer from mommy guilt, feeling they have to spend every moment at home with their youngsters. Experts say, having friends is actually beneficial to your health. A 2000 UCLA study on the topic, found a circle of friends for women, actually helps to alleviate stress. An Australian study on aging found that having good friends for women, as well as men, helps to increase longevity. Yet, for some moms, getting out of the house without their kids is considered a luxury. South Jersey mom, Colleen Barbaro of Elk Township, knows this scenario all too well. “If I get a night out without the kids, it is usually for a date night with my husband for dinner and some alone time, or an occasional lunch, dinner or glass of wine with my girlfriends.” Most of her girlfriends have children, but she admits that she does have a few friends who have no children at all. “Either way, we all cherish moments when we’re able to get together to catch up and share stories.”
6 | March 2018
Some of those getaway moments for moms may be at some of the many fun places throughout South Jersey. Numerous restaurants dot the Southern New Jersey landscape that serve a variety of delicious cuisines. There’s also wine and painting parties, comedy clubs, concerts and even the theater. Atlantic City is close by many communities and offers gambling, the beach and plenty of nighttime activities. For moms, who are just too tired for a night out, they too can have plenty of fun activities, simply at home. After putting kids to bed, moms can invite a few friends over for such fun activities as a spa night or a chick flick movie marathon. They can even host a wine and cheese tasting party or have game night, bringing out their favorite games or even re-playing some of their old time favorite games from their youth. “Time alone is very important in maintaining a marriage,” said Barbaro. “Sometimes people lose their identity to being mom or dad or the marriage gets put on the back burner. It’s important to remember who you are both individually and as a couple, and have that adult time together.”

Health in Your Hands the importance of
BREAST SELF-EXAMS By Brie Latini
U
nderstanding your body is important to staying healthy. When you have an understanding of how your body feels, looks and operates on a day-to-day level, you will be best equipped to notice any changes. When it comes to breast cancer, the same rule applies: you are your first and best defense. Reading and knowing the risk factors and signs of breast cancer are a first step to staying healthy, and for women, monthly breast exams play a vital part. According to BreastCancer. org, a non-profit organization providing up-todate information on breast cancer, self-exams a simple method should be performed at least once per month. First, look for any visual changes in the breasts. Swelling, puckered skin, changes in the shape of the nipple, and redness are all potential warning signs. Examine your breasts in the mirror, first with your arms at your sides and then raised, keeping an eye out for any visual differences. Discharge from the nipple 8 | March 2018
(if you are not lactating/breastfeeding) is also a warning sign and should be followed up with a medical exam. Next, you should examine your breasts with your fingertips, feeling for any physical symptoms, such as a hard lump. For some women, cystic breasts are any everyday occurrence, meaning that the breast may feel “lumpy” all the time. This is an example of why it is key to be in tune with your body. Recognizing an “everyday” lump will allow you to feel a difference if another lump should form. This part of a self-exam should be performed both laying down and standing up. When laying down, place your arm above your head and use the opposite arm to examine that breast. Move up, down and across, using small, circular motions, pressing down. Next, repeat moving side to side across the breast. The same procedure can be used for a standing exam. The shower is an ideal place for a breast exam—you’re already naked, already stand-

ing, and the running water can help your hand glide across the breast. If you see or feel any changes, don't panic. Call your doctor and make an appointment for an exam. A physician will be able to determine the next step. Often, there is further testing performed, such as a mammogram. Your age, family history, and other risk factors will determine additional testing, such as an ultrasound or MRI of the breast. If a lump proves to be troublesome, your physician may order a biopsy. This is a minimally painful procedure in which your physician will use a long needle to extract a piece of a lump for testing. Talk with your doctor to understand your personal risk factors, make a plan for when you should begin yearly mammograms, and commit to performing a breast self-exam once a month. While there is no surefire way to prevent breast cancer, you can certainly do everything you can to lower your risk. For more information, visit breastcancer.org.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
By Shannon Cahill
ADOLESCENTS AND SELF-HARM
S
elf-harm is a very real and serious issue among adolescents. As a parent, finding out that your child is purposely causing themselves pain can come as a shock and be hard to understand. The first thing to know is that self-harm is not a suicide attempt. In most cases, adolescents who cause harm to themselves use it as a coping mechanism. Dr. Debbie Riddle, a therapist and CEO of Total Family Solutions, said “A child may self harm as a means of distraction from the emotional pain they are feeling. Frequently we hear “it feels good” “it is releasing or freeing”. Someone who is self-harming will try to keep their cuts and scars hidden from their parents and other authority figures. Some adolescents will share their injuries with other peers to fit in. “Sadly the view of engaging in self harming behaviors can become “normalized “among friends.” Said Dr. Riddle. SOME WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK FOR: • Wearing long sleeve shirts or long pants in warm weather. • Multiple unexplained marks on them such as cuts, bruises or burns. • Isolation from friends and family. • Wearing bandages, bracelets or other wrist bands to hide cuts. Be sure to have open communication about feelings with your kids. If they feel they cannot be open and honest with their negative emotions, self-harming can become their coping mechanism. Try to take notice if they are being bullied, having a hard time at school or seem stressed or depressed. 10 | March 2018
“A child may self harm as a means of distraction from the emotional pain they are feeling” Stay on top of what your child is viewing on the internet. Social media has a big influence on children, which in some cases can be dangerous. Many popular social media sites have strict regulations against conversations and images of self-harm. Unfortunately, there are other websites that lack this restriction and even pro self injury sites and chat rooms that teach how to hurt oneself. If you find that your child is causing self-injury get them to a licensed therapist for treatment. They will be able to see if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed by a psychiatrist. Talk with a counselor yourself to learn about healthy coping mechanisms that you can teach your child. Learning to manage their emotions in a positive way is key for recovery. Dr. Riddle encourages parents to “be empathetic and reach out for help. Resources are available to children and families 24/7 through Performcare 877-652-7624.” *If you notice any warning signs of suicide in your child, go to your local emergency room immediately, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or reach out to the Crisis Text Line by texting “START” to 741-741.

Birthday Parties on Every Budget By Kelly N. Moore, Psy.D.
package. Either way, a party should be about what your child is into. So if your child loves video games, and you don’t want to pay for one of those fancy trucks, consider letting his or her friends just come hang out and take turns playing on your system at home. Don’t get too caught up in how it looks to other adults. The kids will have fun as long as they are free to do what they like! TO PARTY OR NOT TO PARTY… If you have a few kids and if you’re someone who throws parties all the time, it can be a lot on family and friends to come to 3-4 parties a year and be expected to give gifts. So depending on your budget, consider only having “big” parties during milestone birthdays like 1, 5, 10, 13, 16, etc. Your budget may not be a factor, but everyone may not be in the same position.
B
irthdays! I have a friend that referred to it as our “trips around the sun” and I have used it ever since! They are times of great celebration, especially for our little ones! The way we celebrate birthdays is varied—from those that treat it like just another day with very little fanfare, to those who treat their birthday like a national holiday. Whatever your pleasure, here’s some ideas to consider for celebrating your child(ren)’s birthdays for any budget. Some general ideas to stay within your desired budget: IT’S A NUMBERS GAME If you want to keep your birthday party budget down, consider paring down your guest list. Every child that knows your child doesn’t have to be invited. A cool strategy can be inviting the number of kids relative to your child’s age (e.g., 9 friends for a 9th birthday party). This will help in stretching your budget so you aren’t paying for the cost of lots of extra people. If money is no object, then invite away! Also, use local dollar stores and online stores to get good deals on items for your favor bags! FOCUS ON YOUR CHILD’S INTEREST, NOT HOW IT LOOKS Whether your budget is big or small, focus on your child’s interest. Typically, you can throw a great party at a bowling alley or skating ring for any cost, but your budget determines how much you add to your party

CONSIDER STAYING HOME! Birthday parties that are held in the comfort of someone’s home or at local public parks are usually a great way to keep costs down for parties. No matter what time of year it is, you can solicit ideas from creative friends, family, or good ole Pinterest to transform pretty much any space into the theme party of your child’s dreams. Just be careful! Sometimes, this budget can get out of hand if you go too crazy with decorations. Set a budget and stick to it. They will have plenty of birthdays for you go bigger throughout the years.

WORLD OF ADVENTURE
town 2 town
THE BOROUGH OF HADDONFIELD:
By Barbara Wilchensky
P
opping up on many of the “best lists” for Camden County, such as best or safest place to live, you will find the Borough of Haddonfield. Since warmer weather is right around the corner, you should add an afternoon of strolling the streets of Haddonfield to your Spring to do list to see why it is a top ten location! Haddonfield has the perfect mix of shopping, dining, history and recreation. With hints of British, Scottish, and Irish flair, along with Mediterranean, Italian, Chinese and Indian cuisine, Haddonfield will give you a worldly feel. The heart of Haddonfield lies along Kings Highway, which stretches through the middle of the town. Unique gift shops, floral shops, formal dress wear, optical and clothing stores dot the sidewalks on both sides of the streets, as well as down many side alleys. For the book lover both children and adults, stop by Inkwood Books, an independent bookstore whose owner has an interesting background story. The kids will enjoy a trip into the toy store along with the many sugary treat shops, like cake pops and ice cream, along the way.
“Haddonfield has the perfect mix of shopping, dining, history and recreation” If you are looking for history, Haddonfield has it with the Indian King Tavern Museum. This tavern once became a safe haven for the New Jersey Legislature. In 1777, after George Washington’s army defeated the British in Trenton, the legislators felt the need to move temporarily to a safer location. According to the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry website, the legislators spent several months at the Indian King Tavern and it was here that the Great Seal of New Jersey was adopted. The tavern is open for tours most days of the week and is restored to the décor of the late 1700’s. The museum curator has a wealth of information to share. If you would rather talk science, then Haddonfield is still the place! In 1858, the bones of the first nearly complete dinosaur, Hadrosaurus foulkii, were found along the water in the current location of Pennypacker Park. Walk or jog along the trails to locate the spot of the excavation, which is marked with a plaque. Note: A replica dinosaur watches over the town as a reminder of this scientific discovery, be sure to stop by for a selfie with Haddy! With plenty of public parking, you can spend the day exploring Haddonfield and then take the PATCO Lindenwold Line into Philadelphia. In fact, Haddonfield’s close proximity to Philadelphia with a 10-minute drive to the Ben Franklin Bridge has made it a popular in-season home to many Philadelphia pro-sports athletes. Whenever you decide to visit, be sure to check the Haddonfield website for upcoming events such as the Night Market in March! summer camp guide
Gain Independence — Camp is one of the best environments for children to gain independence and have a healthy separation from their parents. At day camp, children board the bus and go to camp on their own, have the opportunity to choose some elective activities and learn to trust their own decisions without a parent by their side. Overnight camp provides for even more opportunities for independence. Being away from home for an extended period of time allows children to see themselves separately from their parents. They work through their own problems, choose what to eat at meals, and go to sleep in a different environment than home. These steps toward independence are important for children to become successful and independent adults.
Why CHILDREN NEED CAMP Today More Than Ever
F
By Jess Michaels
or over 100 years, children have enjoyed summers at camp learning to swim, making new friends, gaining important life skills and attaining sports skills. However, in recent years, it has become very clear that today’s young people need the camp experience now more than ever. Here are just a few reasons why:
Break from Technology — According to a 2015 Common Sense Media Report, children ages 8 – 12-years-old spend an average of 4 hours and 36 minutes using screen media. Tweens spend an average of 4.5 hours each day with screen media and 6 hours with all media. Camp allows for a much needed break from technology. The majority of summer camps don’t allow for smart phones, tablets, computers, TVs or any device that has wifi capabilities, allowing for children to connect with each other, face to face, and participate in the many activities offered without the distraction of screens. Improve Communication Skills – Because media use is so prevalent, children aren’t com22 | March 2018
Build Resilience — Camp builds resilience among children. Whether it’s getting over some homesickness the first week of camp or making it to the top of the climbing wall after being fearful for weeks, there are many opportunities for building resiliency. Life will present challenges for everyone but having the skills to bounce back and recover from difficulties will help children grow into resilient adults.
municating the same way they were a generation ago. Talking has been replaced by texting, snap chatting and Instagram comments. Technology can also isolate young people, communicating from their bedrooms with a screen in hand instead of spending time with a friend one-on-one. At camp, texting is replaced with talking and forming meaningful friendships. Without the use of screens, campers are having conversations, laughing and reading social cues. Time to Play — The days where children just played all afternoon in the backyard or on the street with friends are gone. Today, children are overscheduled with music lessons and sports. Our structured society leaves very little time for play. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is essential to the social, emotional, cognitive and physical well-being of children and an important tool for children to develop resiliency as they learn to work with others. Camp allows for plenty of time for creative play where kids can just be kids and enjoy the many benefits of just being able to play.

Camp Educates the Whole Child — There is more to learning than just tests and good grades. Unfortunately, the traditional school classroom doesn’t address the whole child. Camp is one of the most powerful learning environments and where a child’s social education takes place. Camp provides children with the opportunity to try new activities and succeed at these new skills, which allows for confidence building. Children also gain important social skills and problem solving skills by being part of a supportive community and taking part in activities together.

Better Breakfasts, Better Days By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio
I
t’s important to start the day out with a healthy breakfast. It helps children focus better in school, and adults focus better on their daily tasks. Whole grain cereal or toast, fruit, eggs and oatmeal are all good options. It’s best to stay away from sugary sweet cereals and pastries because they have little to no nutritional value, and instead of helping you get a good jump start to the day, will end up making you feel sluggish. When possible try to use fresh or frozen organic fruit. It’s available in many local grocery stores, health stores and food markets.
BERRY GOOD FOR YOU PANCAKES • 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour • 1 cup whole wheat flour • 2 tbs. flaxseed meal or oat bran, optional • 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 2 tbs. raw sugar or pure maple syrup • 3 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder • 2 eggs • 1 1/2 cups organic or almond milk • 1/4 cup safflower or sunflower oil • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries • Butter or non-stick cooking spray, for cooking • Maple syrup, for topping
Preheat a griddle or non-stick skillet over medium heat. In a large bowl, whisk together flours, flaxseed meal, salt, sugar and baking powder. Make a small well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the eggs, milk and oil. Gently whisk wet and dry ingredients together, just until combined. Batter will be slightly lumpy, but it’s better not to over mix. Stir in the blueberries and raspberries. If batter seems a little too dry, add a little more milk; if too wet, add a little more flour. Lightly grease the griddle with butter or non-stick cooking spray and, using a ladle, add about 1/4 cup batter onto hot griddle for each pancake. Cook until bubbles appear on the surface and then flip pancakes. Cook second side just until lightly golden brown and batter is cooked through. Transfer pancakes onto serving plates and serve immediately topped with butter and maple syrup or your favorite toppings. Note: You can use all blueberries or add strawberries in place of the raspberries in this recipe. www.southjerseymom.com
FRUITY BREAKFAST SUNDAE
• 6 oz. plain Greek-style yogurt • Honey or pure maple syrup, to taste • 1/4 cup fresh blueberries or strawberries • 1/4 cup sliced bananas • 1/4 cup granola (See Recipe) In a small bowl, add yogurt, then stir in sweetener of choice, top with blueberries, bananas and granola. Serve. EASY & DELICIOUS BAKED GRANOLA • 3 cups rolled oats • 1 tbs. wheat germ • 1 tbs. flaxseed meal • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts, pecans or almonds • 1/4 cup honey • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup • 1/4 cup safflower oil or melted butter • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1 cup raisins, dried cranberries or dried cherries Preheat oven to 325°. In a large bowl, combine oats, wheat germ, flaxseed meal, cinnamon, nuts, honey, maple syrup, oil and vanilla. Mix ingredients until well combined. Spread granola onto a large baking pan greased with non-stick cooking spray. Bake for 25-35 minutes. Stir the granola occasionally during the baking process. Remove granola from oven once done, and stir in the dry fruit. Let granola cool completely before storing in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Serve with organic milk, almond milk or use as a topping on yogurt, etc. Note: You’ll notice that the granola may still be sticky when it comes out of the oven, but it will crisp and dry up as it cools. As always, Bon Appetit!
