Sunshine Pop-Up Card for Mom

Brighten Mom's day with this easy pop-up card! To make the craft for Mother's Day, you'll need these supplies: • Card stock or construction paper • Tissue paper honeycomb ball • Markers, crayons, colored pencils or paint • Tape First, fold a sheet of card stock or construction paper in half. Then open the tissue paper honeycomb ball and tape it to the card with the center along the inside fold of the card, so that it will "pop" when the card opens. Then, using the markers or crayons, color sunshine rays around the honeycomb tissue ball. To finish the card, write "You're My Sunshine" and write a letter "M" on either side of the pop-out tissue ball to make the word "mom."

often have expectations for Mother’s Day. Sort of like I do for my Birthday. It’s the one day that I sort of technically “get away” with doing, well — NOTHING. It’s the day I have in mind where I am served, the day where I don’t have to wipe down a counter, unload dishes or make …and the list goes on! I kind of envision it where my household is revolving around me, not the other way around. Um, that hasn’t worked out yet. Through the years I’ve collected all the typical handmade Mother’s Day gifts the kids bring home from school. Teachers sure are amazing thinking of us moms, right? I have many of those projects scattered around the house reminding me of the early years. As

the kids have gotten older, I really miss the handcrafted goodies made by little hands. I miss the running up and jumping on the bed with the glitter spilling everywhere. I miss the excitement of doing something special for “Mommy.” It seems the enthusiasm fades on Mother’s Day with teens but it’s part of life to embrace each new development stage that comes down the path. Try not to put so much meaning on one day of the year and create a special foundation by taking day trips and exploring outside together. This month our writers will tell you how to do just that… Dolores Hoffman shares 5 tips to make a great Mother’s Day (page 10). Looking for a fun day at the Jersey Shore read about “Stone Harbor: 3 Miles of Fun in The Sun” (page 12). South Jersey MOM writer Angela DeGroot researched National Geographic Citizen Projects (page 16) to get your family of scientists moving outside. The Citizen Projects encourage kids to collect data in the local community for National Geographic research. Projects include: butterflies, earthworms, birds, frogs, spiders and water testing. Family time is the best Mother’s Day gift of all!✲

merica loves the mega-watt smile, but few people are born with it naturally. For the rest of us, orthodontic treatment is the path to that beautiful smile. Right now, millions of kids in America are wearing braces of some kind. But, while braces will give your kid a great smile, are they worth the price? If you’re a parent, you might have already crunched the numbers. According to an article from the New York Times, braces can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $7,000. That’s not cheap, but braces bring more to the table than just straight teeth. While the principal reason for braces is an improved smile, realignment also has tangible health benefits. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, straightened teeth and an aligned jaw can help your child with chewing, biting, and even speaking. On top of that, braces can reduce the risk of unnecessary wear and grinding, helping your kid’s teeth last longer. Plus, when it comes to brushing, straighter teeth are easier to clean, and cleaner teeth are less prone to cavities. The health perks are nice, but the biggest benefit is harder to quantify: it’s the self-esteem boost that a child gets from a straighter smile. This is the benefit that Dr. Tom Kadar, owner and operator of Kadar Orthodontics, sees every day. When his patients first come in, he says, “I see kids shy, covering their teeth, keeping their eyes down. But after treatment, they’re proud of their smile; they get a huge self-esteem boost.” That con6 | May 2018

fidence, Dr. Kadar mentions, comes from the fact that the US is a country that values straight teeth, so after a child finishes their alignment, they can’t help but feel pride in their new smile. They just want to show it off. On top of those benefits, having your kid get braces at a young age also helps the with alignment process. According to the American Association of Orthodontist, because kids mouths and jaws are still growing, problems like tooth crowding and jaw misalignment are easier and quicker to fix than they are for adults. Plus, getting the benefits of cleaner teeth and less grinding will help keep your child’s teeth healthy. Nothing prevents your child from getting braces later in life; in fact, hundreds of thousands of adults are wearing braces right now, but it’s often easier to get the treatment done as a child. Overall, braces, especially for kids with severe dental issues, are life changing. And, while the benefits don’t negate the huge price tag, if you think your child’s life will improve from braces, don’t let the cost stop you from researching. Many Orthodontics, like Kadar, offer free consultations. They, along with your child’s dentist, can decide if braces are even needed for your child’s teeth. And, if braces seem like the right option, there are ways to manage the cost, such as insurance, payment plans, or government programs. It’s difficult, but braces are obtainable, if you think they’re right for your child.

Tips for Making

SLEEP FOR KIDS a Vital Priority By Cheryl Lynne Potter

C

hildren, just like some adults, often have trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Some kids toss and turn all night, as they try their best to get some zzzs. A good night’s sleep is vital to how a child’s mind and body grows and develops. Behavior or developmental problems can occur when a child doesn’t sleep well. Those sleepless nights can also cause parents a lot of headaches and plenty of stress. Restless nights can also be warning sign of a serious health issue, like a sleeping problem. “Children absolutely have sleep problems,” said Melisa Moore, Ph.D, a sleep ex-

pert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The hospital has a partnered with New Jersey’s Virtua Hospital and their doctors offer their services at Virtua’s pediatric sleep lab, as well as offering other pediatric medical care. Some sleep problems, said Dr. Moore, are “similar to adults (such as obstructive sleep apnea or restless legs) and others are specific to children (difficulty falling asleep without a parent).” Yet, the most common problems depends on the age of the child, said Dr. Moore. “In infants we often see frequent night wakings, in toddlers we might see pushing the limits, which leads to a long bedtime routine and late bedtime. In adolescents we typically see daytime

sleepiness as a result of difficulty falling asleep at an ideal time (either because of habits of biology) and having to wake early for school.” For parents, there are many warning signs to look for in determining if a child has a sleeping problem. “First, notice your child’s breathing at night,” said Dr. Moore. Do they look comfortable or are they snoring? “If you observe snoring, gasping, or pauses in breathing, this should be discussed with your child’s pediatrician.” Also, if they have “trouble falling asleep or staying asleep and you can’t fix it yourself, a sleep doctor or sleep psychologist can help,” said Dr. Moore.

”For children, the main key in getting a good night’s sleep is consistency in a bedtime or a wake time routine“ For children, the main key in getting a good night’s sleep is consistency in a bedtime or a wake time routine. This also includes weekdays and weekends, as well. For a toddler, said Dr. Moore, this would be “about 20-30 minutes and include something like a bath, pjs, brush teeth, 3 short stories and a song. For a teenager this might be a snack, pack lunch, take a shower and read for 20 minutes.” Parents should also eliminate caffeine after lunch, as well as daytime napping for older children and teenagers, said Dr. Moore. Parents should also monitor their children’s use of electronic devices before bedtime. Electronics, said Dr. Moore, temporarily stops the brain from producing a chemical in our brain, called melatonin, which helps us to get sleepy and stay asleep at night. Children should also learn not to fall asleep with the TV or some other electronic device on. If a child uses the TV to fall asleep, they may “wake more frequently during the night,” said Dr. Moore. Consulting with your child’s pediatrician or even seeking advice from a sleep clinic may be helpful to both parent and child to finally get a good night’s sleep.

Mother’s Day

By Dolores Hoffman

M

other’s Day became officially recognized in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. It is a day to honor mothers and celebrate motherhood and is the one day out of the year when children of all ages show how much they appreciate their mothers. There are many creative ways to show the mothers in your life that you appreciate them. Here are few ideas to make this Mother’s Day a day to remember: Time Together If you can, set aside that day and treat your mother to a day she’ll remember. Take her to brunch or a movie. Spending time together is what really counts.

A Day Off This is by far the best gift of all. Whether you take the day off or give the mom in your life time to sit back and relax, it’s a great idea all around. One thing moms are short on is “time.” This is especially true for moms with young children. Time to read, nap or just do nothing will be a welcomed gift. Let’s face it, at some point on Mother’s Day, you will want some time alone for a little rest and relaxation. To ensure you get your wish, be direct and give your significant other a heads up a few days before Mother’s Day. Trust me, they’ll appreciate the guidance. Some things to ask for: • A chance to sleep in until 9 a.m. • Breakfast in Bed • A massage at your favorite salon • Peace and quiet for a few hours Write Down Your Memories Moms love to know what their kids remember from childhood and how 10 | May 2018

they see things now. List all the memories and teachable moments and write them in a little journal or tear each memory off in a srip and put them in a decorative jar. Pull out a memory every day. Simple Celebration Making a Mother’s Day celebration memorable doesn’t mean it has to be expensive or difficult. Gather your family and friends together for a joint celebration. Invite all the people who hold a special place in your mother’s life. Order a cake or arrange a barbecue.

Think Outside the Box • Giving cards and flowers are nice but why not give a unique gift this year. • A private yoga session can do wonders. She may resist at first but once she feels the benefits, she’ll be hooked. • Give your time. A clean house makes for a happy mom. Offer to do yard work or clean the house before making her a great dinner. You don’t have to clean everything, she’ll just be happy and relieved that she didn’t have to do it herself! Mother’s Day without Mom Mother’s Day can be a difficult holiday for those whose mothers have passed away. Although it can be painful, spending time with loved ones and remembering the good times can be rewarding. Cooking one of your mother’s best dishes or sharing stories about her to your own children can turn your sorrow into a tribute. Another great way to honor your mother is by doing something nice for someone else’s mom. We are all here because of our mom. However you celebrate Mother’s Day, be sure to relax, have fun and thank her for being so kind and so loving. Happy Mother’s Day!

STONE HARBOR CAPE MAY COUNTY

By Barbara Wilchensky

3 miles of fun in the sun!

W

ith warmer weather emerging, families will soon be flocking to the beach. In New Jersey, we are fortunate to have 130 miles of coastline within our reach. The Southern Shore Region stretching from Ocean City to the southernmost point of the State, Cape May, is home to white sandy beaches and tons of family fun! Within this region you will find Seven-Mile Island, a stretch of land, you guessed it, seven miles long encompassing two shore towns, Avalon and Stone Harbor. Seven Mile Island is a barrier island stretching out into the Atlantic Ocean and at its widest point is only four blocks. Standing amongst the streets of the island it feels as if you could almost reach out and touch the Atlantic Ocean and the bay at the same time! Stone Harbor is one of the “younger” shore towns of the region, having been incorporated in 1914, but the history of the area dates back to the 1700’s when it was occupied by the Lenni Lenape who came to the forest covered island to fish and trap. The history of the town is captured in the local museum which is free of charge to visit. When visiting Stone Harbor, you will 12 | May 2018

not find a boardwalk, as it was destroyed by a storm in the 1940’s and never rebuilt. Instead, you will find a family town atmosphere where you can stroll the sidewalks, window shop, and stop for ice cream, fudge or a game of minigolf, just as if you were at the boardwalk of neighboring Ocean City. Stone Harbor isn’t short on the dining options either. There are restaurants for families including delicious pizza, and also, romantic date options overlooking the bay. The Wetlands Institute is an excellent place to escape the midday sun or a passing storm. This super kid-friendly educational experience focuses on the conservation of the wetlands and its’ inhabitants. Besides the inside Aquarium and Terrapin Station, be sure to stroll along the Salt Marsh Trail. For a truly up close with nature experience, try the bay back, family friendly, kayaking and bird watching wildlife tours. There are often festivals and nature programs so check their website frequently. If you are looking for more nature, you can take a guided tour of the 21 acre Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. Don’t forget your fishing poles as there are several fishing points along the bay or charter boat options.

When calling advertisers, please say you saw it in SJMOM!

When night approaches the fun in Stone Harbor doesn’t cease. Throughout the summer, you will find nightly activities such as a Family Fun Night, Music Concerts, and Cornhole playing, all free of charge. Navigating your way around the seven miles of the island is made easy with the Jitney. For a low cost, you and the family can take a leisurely ride to explore the other half of the island, Avalon, as well. In an interview with CBS3 last summer, the Mayor of Stone Harbor described the town as a great family destination where traditions are built. Mayor Davies-Dunhour expressed there is something for everyone, no matter what your age on Seven Mile Island. If you have never visited the Southern Shore Region, add it to your summer bucket list! If you been there or live close by, seek a new adventure within this area as there are many hidden gems to discover! Barbara is a lifelong resident of South Jersey, an educator and a mother of three. Together her family enjoys outdoor activities and a they have a goal to travel to every state in the U.S.! Follow their adventures on Barbara’s blog at wilfamtravels.wordpress.com.

Berry Sweet Strawberry Dishes By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

One of the most desired and delicious crops of the spring season are plump, juicy strawberries. Strawberries can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: just as is or in savory or sweet dishes including these irresistibly yummy recipes. Make sure to pick up these little beauties from your local farmers’ market while at their peak -- from about April/May until mid-June. Pecan Crusted Chicken & Strawberry Wraps • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1 1/4 cups pecans, finely chopped or ground • 1/4 cup all-purpose unbleached or whole wheat flour • 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 1/2 tsp. black pepper • 3 egg whites • 4 large whole-wheat tortillas • 6 strawberries, sliced • 1/2 avocado, sliced • 1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained • Romaine lettuce leaves • 4 tbs. spicy brown or stone-ground mustard • 3 tbs. honey

Preheat oven to 450°. Grease a baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a bowl, mix together pecans, flour, salt and pepper. In another bowl, whisk together egg whites until frothy. Dip each piece of chicken into the egg whites, coating completely, then dredge chicken into the pecan mixture, gently pressing mixture onto the chicken to help adhere. Place chicken onto baking pan, and bake for 30–35 minutes or until chicken is golden brown and juices run clear. Remove chicken from oven and let cool slightly, then slice. Take three of the sliced strawberries and mash in a bowl with a fork, add in mustard and honey, stirring to combine. Spread some of the strawberry honey mustard into the center of each wrap, top with lettuce, chicken slices, strawberry slices, avocado slices and oranges, then roll up. Serve.

Strawberry Parfaits

• 4 cups sliced strawberries, divided • 1/4 cup raw sugar or sweetener of choice • 1 cup reduced fat ricotta cheese • 1/2 cup (4 oz.) reduced fat cream cheese, softened • 1/4 cup raw sugar or sweetener of choice • 1 tbs. milk, rice or almond milk

• 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1 cup granola • 1/2 cup frozen reduced-calorie whipped topping, thawed • 2 tbs. slivered almonds Place 2 cups of strawberry slices and 1/4 cup sugar in a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Set strawberry puree aside. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta, cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, milk and vanilla; stir well. Spoon 2 tablespoons granola into each of 4 parfait glasses; top each with 2 tablespoons strawberry puree, then 1/4 cup strawberry slices, and 3 tablespoons ricotta mixture; repeat the layers. Drizzle the remaining strawberry puree over each serving. Chill for 2-3 hours. Top each parfait with 2 tablespoons whipped topping and 1/2 tablespoon slivered almonds

Fresh Strawberry Dressing

• 1 cup fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled and sliced • 1-2 tbs. balsamic vinegar • 1 tsp. raw sugar or sweetener of choice • Sea salt, to taste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2 tbs. extra-virgin olive oil Place strawberries, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper into a blender or food processor; blend until pureed, stopping once or twice to scrape down the sides. Add 2 tablespoons oil and process until smooth. Serve over favorite salad, grilled chicken, turkey breast, etc. As always, Bon Appetit!

PINT-SIZED

CITIZEN SCIENTISTS By Angela De Groot

C

an kids really contribute to science? Well, from their own backyards, neighborhood parks, school playgrounds, and open fields, kids can collect and log data that scientists can use to discover answers to research questions. This is called citizen science. So, what exactly is citizen science? According to Loree Griffin Burns, PhD, author of Citizen Scientists, The Hive Detectives, and Tracking Trash, citizen science “is the study of our world by the people who live in it.” Kids are uniquely suited to certain areas of observation because of their size, their enthusiasm, and their single-minded focus. “Young people see the world differently than older people do. And when it comes to working in the field as a citizen scientist, these differences are important.” With a grownup’s guidance, even very young children can participate, whether it’s a short-duration bird census project focused around your backyard birdfeeder, or a year-long study of birds in your neighborhood. “With flash cards (available online or from nature centers) of the common birds, very young naturalists can learn the species common in their environment and begin to track when they show up in their own yards or nearby green spaces,” Burns says. [Great Backyard Bird Count http://gbbc.birdcount.org/] Another fun project for the very young involves hunting for and identifying ladybugs by their spot-patterns and colors. [Lost Ladybug Project http://www.lostladybug.org/] There are countless citizen science project opportunities to choose from. Some are season or location dependent, may run for a short period or are longer in duration. Most have flexible commitment obligations and

16 | May 2018

can be as informal or as intensive as you and your kids want the project to be. From mushrooms to moles, and everything in between, you are bound to find an ideal project at one of these websites: At CitSci.org search for projects by location, season, and topic. Choose from a large selection of projects, including urban tree monitoring where participants collect tree data, and a New Jersey Invasives Strike Force that collects information about invasive plant species found along trails in NJ. www.citsci.org • Journey North has citizen science projects for tracking the migration of monarch butterflies, robins, and hummingbirds, along with projects for frog and earthworm fans. Kids can post their sightings, view maps, and monitor live webcams. www.learner.org/jnorth/projects • National Geographic’s citizen science projects include surveys of frog and toad populations, bird counts, and water testing activities. www.nationalgeographic.org/idea/citizen-science-projects • SciStarter’s Where Is My Spider project tracks the distribution of spiders over time. Find and record spiders in and around your neighborhood and upload your photos. www.scistarter.com • The National Wildlife Federation site teaches citizen science skills and provides parents with engaging outdoor learning experiences to try with their kids. You can plug in your state then print off a list of plant and animal life common to your area. Kids can upload their own photos of wildlife to the NWF Wildlife Watch site. www.birds.cornell.edu/citscitoolkit/projects/nwf/wildlifewatch Citizen science project opportunities are endless. And so is the joy your family will have exploring the natural world around them. Visit www.loreeburns.com to find out more about Loree Griffin Burns’ work and books.

BOYS AND

BODY IMAGE

W

By Shannon Cahill

hen you think about body image issues you usually think about girls. This is because boys tend to be more private when it comes to voicing their concerns, especially when it is about themselves. Having negative feelings and keeping them in can cause low self-esteem. During puberty, a boy’s body image becomes front and center. There are a lot of changes that occur including hair growing on different parts of their bodies and changes in their voice. Being self-conscious about going through puberty can also occur when a boy is not experiencing these changes and his friends are. He may feel embarrassed that he still looks and sounds like a little boy while his friends are turning into men. Just as many young girls wish to be thinner, many young boys wish to be more muscular. Pop culture has made it seem as though you must fit a certain body image in order to be deemed attractive and manly. Every health magazine you see for men has a built model or actor on the cover with their shirt off and muscles showing. The problem here is that these photos are heavily photo shopped and airbrushed which means the look the young boys are trying to copy is unrealistic. The ramifications of body image issues in young boys can be dangerous. It can lead to depression, anxiety and even drug use. Boys can also develop something called “muscle dysmorphia” which is like a reverse anorexia. They will become obsessed with “bulking” which is not healthy at a young age. Bones and muscles are still trying to grow natu-

rally, so taking products that will alter your physical appearance, such as steroids, can negatively affect that natural process. As a parent, be sure to look for the problem so you can be aware right away. Pay attention to any drastic changes in behavior. Take notice of significant weight gain or loss, changes in eating habits such as cutting out all carbs and sugar or an obsession with fitness magazines. If you think there may be a body image issue occurring, ASK! If his reasoning seems irrational, consult his doctor and help him see his positive attributes that are not related to his physical appearance. Help him gain a positive body image by recognizing his strengths whether it be intellectual or athletic. Teach him to respect his body by eating healthy and exercising. Most of all, remind him that his body is just ONE part of him. Shannon is the mom of a sassy two-year-old named Isabella. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Writing Arts and will be marrying the love of her life in May 2018.

REAL ESTATE NEWS

W

hether you’re currently married or a single mother, there’s one metric that can have a big impact on your household’s financial health, especially if you think a home purchase might be in your future. That’s your credit score. A bad credit score doesn’t necessarily doom your aspirations to be a homeowner. It’s more of a snapshot of your risk at a particular point in time, which can change. And even if you’ve had credit problems, options such as a FHA loan are available. But starting the homebuying process with a good credit score can save you headaches, as well as thousands of dollars in higher interest rates, fees from FannieMae and Freddie Mac, and private mortgage insurance. About 90 percent of lenders and creditors in the United States use the FICO score, which has a range of 300 to 850. The higher the score, the better it is for the consumer. For a good credit score, keep your credit card balances as low as possible. And be sure to pay all bills on time. Even a day over the limit can hurt you You can order a copy of your credit report and score from each of the three major credit reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — by phone, online or mail. By law, each of the credit reporting agencies must provide you with a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, if you request it. ers and other professionals. Also make sure to research several camps. Some camps, special needs or otherwise, have programs that can accommodate and support certain needs and abilities, and some don’t.”

Choosing a Camp for Your Child with SPECIAL NEEDS By Jess Michaels

I

f you are thinking about camp for your child with special needs, there are many things to consider that go beyond the typical camp search. Below are some tips to help you navigate your camp search and help you find the camp that will be the best fit for your child. CAMP GOALS “First thing is to consider what you are hoping your child will gain from the camp experience such as recreation, a respite, new friendships and to gain independence,” explains Maureen Brennan, Director of Camp Jaycee, a residential summer camp for children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Pennsylvania. “Starting with this question will help to guide your search.” MAINSTREAM OR SPECIAL NEEDS CAMP Kim Minerley, Director of Camp Merry Heart, a program of Easterseals New Jersey for people of all ages and all types of disabilities and special needs, says your camp choices often depends on the severity of a child's needs and abilities. “There are many variables in deciding on a camp for children with special needs. When looking at whether a child will be more successful at a mainstream or special needs camp, begin by reviewing the child’s support plan at school and speaking to teach24 | May 2018

When calling advertisers, please say you saw it in SJMOM!

CONSIDERATIONS Minerley feels the most important considerations should be about safety. “It’s important to ask some key questions such as: Is the camp accredited by the American Camp Association? Are there background checks on all staff? Is the staff experienced and how are they trained? Who is on the medical team and are they available at all hours? How are medications/treatments delivered? What are the protocols if a child is injured or ill? Are special foods available for campers with restricted, special or therapeutic diets? How will my child’s special needs be managed at camp? What is the Counselor to Camper ratio? As for leisure, look for camps that include a variety of activities which promote positive reinforcement and attention. Ask what a typical week look like and the camp activities that are offered.” MEET THE LEADERSHIP TEAM “A camp will certainly interview the family and child, but it is also important for the family to interview the camp leadership team,” suggests Minerley. “Make sure you are prepared with your questions and you are happy with the answers. A good rapport with the camp leadership is important and having an open relationship will allow the leadership team as well as yourself to communicate about anything. Meeting the camp leadership will also give you a good feel for the camp culture.” TOURING CAMP “When possible, visit the camp. It makes the initial drop-off easier for your child when they are familiar with the camp facilities,” says Brennan. Minerley adds, “If it’s not possible to visit, it’s important to check out the website or any you tube videos available. Also, speak with as many staff as possible including the director, nurse, program specialists and counselors. BE HONEST “Most camps will want to know as much as possible about a child in their care. Some parents are reluctant to share too much information with camp staff for fear the child will not be accepted or there might be a particular stigma associated with the child,” says Minerley. “It is imperative, for the success of the child, that parents share all pertinent information having to do with behaviors, interventions and redirection. You do not want your child to attend a camp that is not prepared or does not have all the tools necessary to care for your child’s needs.” www.southjerseymom.com
