ave the calorie packed holiday cookies for a special treat and eat the graband-go granola bar snack instead. Individually wrap and store in the frig to keep your waistline this holiday season. Here are some of South Jersey Mom’s staff favorites.

Prep Your Pan. Preheat oven to 325° F. Line 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper; don’t worry about the paper overhanging the pan edges. Lightly coat with cooking spray. Mix the Dry Stuff. Combine 3 cups of old-fashioned rolled oats, 1 cup crispy brown rice cereal and ¼ teaspoon salt with the ingredients of one of the yummy flavors (to the right) in a large bowl. Hold It Together. Add in 2/3 cup brown rice syrup or light corn syrup, ½ cup nut butter, seed butter or pumpkin puree in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 25 seconds (or heat in saucepan for 1 minute) Add to the dry ingredients and stir until evenly combined. Firmly press into the pan with a spatula. Bake’Em Up. Chose to make chewy or crunchy. For chewier bars, bake until barely starting to color around the edges and still soft in the middle about 20 to 25 minutes. For crunchier bars, bake until golden brown around the edges and firm in the middle, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Using the overhang parchment, lift the bars out of the pan onto cutting board. Cut into bars and let cool without moving for about 30 minutes. Separate and enjoy! 4 | November/December 2017

THE UMBRELLA OF

Learning Disabilities

By Samantha E Gill

C

ome under the umbrella and learn. First learn, as I did, It is no longer called learning differences it is only called disabilities. Second, they also use the umbrella to help teach and guide us to understand the many terms to describe the disabilities that fall under the learning disabilities categories. Let’s try to figure it all out together. As per the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) they endorse the use of the terminology of: “learning disabilities” versus “learning differences” to: “ensure that individuals are appropriately identified as required by these laws in order to receive supports and services as provided by these laws or who deserve equal access to employment and other similar opportunities.” With that being cleared up, what are learning disabilities? The LDA continues with they are “conditions that affect how a person learns to read, write, speak, and calculate numbers. They are caused by differences in brain structure and affect the way a person’s brain processes information.” Sometimes learning disabilities are referred to as “hidden disabilities” because as the LDA describes, “generally speaking, people with learning disabilities are of average or above average intelligence.” So you may be thinking to yourself, why then is this then called a “disability”? Yes, in 2017, “that word” still has certain connotations attached to it. “That” is because learning disabilities still have that old fashioned stigma still looming unfortunately, but the good news is, being the glass 1/2 full, with articles like these bringing attention and information to people we teach people about it and this only helps everyone understand that although there is not a cure to a learning disability someone with a learning disability can indeed live a wonderful successful live, education, career, family, etc. They just need the right therapies, supports and interventions along the way. You may hear the term “umbrella” a lot attached to the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. What is super fantastic about this “umbrella” term is picturing it in your mind when describing a number of learning disabilities. If you open up your mind and the umbrella a drop down list will appear underneath of it, if you will.

Here’s a quick guide to help us all better understand: Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Difficulty processing and remembering language related tasks. Difficulty hearing the differences between sounds. Also problems with reading and language. Dyscalculia Problems with math concepts. They may also struggle with memorizing and organizing numbers, using money, and/or have difficulty telling time. Dysgraphia A writing disorder that affects the handwriting ability and fine motor skills. Problems may include illegible handwriting, organizing your ideas, and poor spelling. Dyslexia Dyslexia is sometimes referred to as a Language-Based / Reading and Learning Disability. You can display problems reading, writing, spelling and/or speaking. Dyspraxia Problems with motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity and/or balance.

Language Processing Disorder Trouble understanding the spoken language and also struggling with reading comprehension. Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities Trouble with non-verbal cues (for example: body language, poor coordination, clumsy.) Visual Processing Disorder You struggle to interpret visual information. You may have problems with reading, math, maps symbols, pictures or you may reverses letters and/or cannot copy accurately. If you live in New Jersey and would like to go online for more information here is a great NJ resource: LDA of New Jersey. The Learning Disabilities Association of NJ (LDANJ) is the state affiliate of LDA of America (LDAA). of Hiremymom.com realized that more than 5.4 million mothers put their careers on hold to stay home with children. “That adds up to a lot of talented women with experience, education, skills and the motivation to find flexible work that can be done from their home office,” Spencer Pyle says. A healthier work environment A common concern in the workplace is wellness. How many times has a co-worker come to work while sick? Poor worker health costs employers hundreds of billions of dollars annually and much of this is because germs are being spread within the workplace, which can be avoided if employees are working from home.

“Statistics show that 82% of professionals said they would be more loyal to their employers if they had flexible work options and 39 % have turned down a promotion because of a lack of flexible work options”

WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY by Dolores Hoffman

W

hat is workplace flexibility? What does it even mean? Workplace flexibility is where a company grants their employees the opportunity to remain productive no matter where they physically work as long as they do their job. When it comes to workplace flexibility, most people assume the employer has all the power. Millennials in particular believe that a flexible work schedule makes you happier and gives life purpose and employers are clearly listening. Here are a few benefits to help decide if workplace flexibility is right for you: Reduces Stress Research shows that flexible work environments reduce stress because employees are 8 | November/December 2017

more satisfied with their jobs, more satisfied with their lives, and experience better balance between family and work. The National Study of the Changing Workforce (NSCW) conducted by the Families and Work Institute found that employees in more flexible workplaces exhibited less negative spillover between work and family life. This was found to benefit both sides. More Balance for Moms More balance between work and home life can have a huge impact on today’s busy families. This means one can be present at events outside of work hours by working through lunch or showing up early to work so they can be home earlier. Lesley Spencer Pyle, Founder

Larger Talent Pool An employer is able to hire anyone, no matter where they are located. Competing on a global scale allows you to search for the best of the best. Sometimes hiring the best qualified people within driving distance is nearly impossible. With modern communication, such as video conferencing, companies can hire employees with the right skill sets and employees have the advantage of widening their job search. Misconceptions There’s a common misconception that ‘flexible’ means lazy. But in reality, if you’re able to trust your employees, you’ll find that a normal 9-5 work schedule is no longer necessary. Statistics show that 82% of professionals said they would be more loyal to their employers if they had flexible work options and 39 % have turned down a promotion because of a lack of flexible work options. It’s simple, happy and content employees do better work and have a happier home life. So dig through that employee handbook and push for more flexibility in your job. It may be the perfect fit for you.

Surviving the Holidays with POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION and ANXIETY By April Wilson

“Others cannot read your mind, so you need to clearly express what you want and need”

E

verywhere you go you’re surrounded by the bright lights of Christmas décor, the humming of Christmas carols, and the message that this is the most wonderful time of year. But if you’re struggling with postpartum depression and/or anxiety, this time of year may be anything but joyous. All the extra stress of trying to make the holidays magical, the overscheduling, the never ending to-do list… the holidays can take a toll on anyone’s mental health, but those with postpartum depression and anxiety need to take extra care to protect their health during this time of year. Here’s some ways to keep the merry in Christmas and avoid the bah humbugs.

Don’t forget the basics. You probably know that exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep are fundamental to mental health, but the chaos of the holidays can often cause us to neglect these essential basics. Even if it means saying no to an invitation or cutting back on other holiday to-dos, make sure you are fitting in exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep. Schedule in self-care. Self-care is another fundamental step in healing from postpartum depression and anxiety, and surviving motherhood in general, but it often gets put on the backburner when life gets busy. Just like sleep and exercise, you must take care of yourself! Whatever self-care looks like for you --- reading a book alone at a coffee shop, taking a bath, getting your nails done, journaling every morning --- make sure you put it on the schedule, and don’t skip it! Make time to be alone. One of the best parts of the holidays is being surrounded by friends 10 | November/December 2017

and family, but all that socializing can be exhausting. Spending some time alone with your thoughts and feelings can be healthy and refreshing. Just make sure you aren’t avoiding all your family and friends because of your mental health. Isolation is not healthy. Learn to say no. There are only so many hours in each day, and you should spend them doing things that fill you up. Don’t feel obligated to attend every party, participate in every holiday tradition, or cram in one more to-do. Instead, decide where you can cut back or delegate so your time is spent enjoying the things that matter to you. There is nothing wrong with saying no. Communicate your needs. Others cannot read your mind, so you need to clearly express what you want and need. Set limits about what you can handle. Ask for what will make the season easier for you. People want to help, but they don’t always know how. Accept where you are. No matter where you are in your healing journey, accept this is where you are right now and that it is okay. It is okay to feel sad, angry, worried, or whatever else you might be experiencing. Just like the season, these feeling, this experience, will pass. If you are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety, be sure to talk to your medical professional. Both are treatable with therapy and/or medication. You don’t have to suffer through this alone.

the quilt to be sent to them so they can send it off to a child in need. Even if someone can’t sew, but still would like to get involved by giving a donation, they can be assured, said Shull, that all money goes to either making or shipping a quilt to a sick child. “We have no overhead, except for the fabrics, labels, bags and shipping,” he said. “People donate money to many wonderful charities, but they know when donating money to Kindquilts, the money goes to a quilt and helps an individual directly.” So far, Kindquilts has partnered with such organizations as Urban Outfitters and the LPGA Shoprite Classic. Kindquilts is looking for committed groups of sewers to take on 10 or more sewing kits. It’s important, said Shull, if someone knows of a seriously-ill child to contact Kindquilts, so a handmade quilt can be sent to them. Quilts can be sent to seriously-ill children anywhere in the country. Visit us at www.kindquilts.org.

indquilts helps to put a smile on the faces of seriously-ill children. This unique nonprofit organization tries to lift the spirits of sick children by sending them a patchwork quilt, handmade by an anonymous donor. “This quilt represents a group of individuals who through their love and compassion, comfort individuals in need,” said Dean Shull, one of the founders of the organization. While he admits he can’t cure the sick, his group strives to “warm their hearts and souls with a tangible gift of love and care during a time of physical distress.” In order for someone to start on their journey of making a handmade quilt for a seriously-ill child, an individual or a group of sewers will first have to get a free kit from Kindquilts, that’s filled with different fabrics, a label and quilting instructions. One quilt, said Shull, takes about 6 hours to complete. Once the quilt is completed, Kindquilts gives another 6 to 8 weeks for

enjoy sightings of the Osprey nesting on the poles, as well as the boats sailing in and out along the water’s edge. Chartering a boat for your own ride is an additional option! Greenwich is a stop on the Bayshore Heritage Scenic Byway. The trail is part of a preservation project, totaling 122 miles of road stretching from Salem to Cape May Point and maintained by PSEG. This particular location is known for bird watching where you may spot gulls or terns, many people have even reported spotting a Bald Eagle. The country roads of Greenwich are perfect for bike riding.

T

he beautiful, crisp air of a fall day is perfect for a road trip and Greenwich Township, Western Cumberland County, is one place not to miss. This small community of roughly 900 residents is a step back in time. The main street through the “town”, Ye Greate Street, is dotted with Colonial and Victorian houses dating from the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. In fact, Greenwich has over a dozen houses on the historical registry. If that is not enough for the historical buff, Greenwich is also the home to many historical landmarks, including a Revolutionary War Monument dedicated to the Greenwich Tea Burners. This particular monument is dedicated to a group of men, who in similar style of the Boston Tea Party took opposition to British taxation by burning tea. The act of rebellion earned them the nickname, “The Teaburners”, a phrase that is still used to refer to the community today. If you are fond of small museums, Greenwich is your place again! There is the 1852 John Dubois Maritime Museum, the Alan Ewing Carman Museum of Prehistory in Cumberland County, and the 1730 Gibbon House Museum, which currently stands as the home to the Cumberland County Historical Society. In addition, you can peruse the 1650 Swedish Granary or the 1930 Red Barn all of which are within walking distance from one another. Greenwich is also for the nature lover, as it is nestled between the Cohansey River and the Delaware Bay. At the Hancock Marina, you can 16 | November/December 2017

If all of the exploring makes you hungry, you have two great choices. At the marina, you can watch the boats while dining on a seafood entrée or enjoying the outside seating. If you are looking for a lighter fare, stop by Aunt Betty’s, a quant restaurant inside of a former residence. Greenwich is definitely worth the trip. Valerie Sheppard, a resident of over 20 years, perfectly summed it up when she stated, “Greenwich is a small, family friendly town where you can find history, nature and peace.” Barbara is a lifelong resident of South Jersey, an educator and a mother of three. 5 TIPS

FOR RAISING A DIGITAL NATIVE

By Kelly N. Moore, Psy.D.

“Why do these kids post every little thing they do?!” “They don’t know how to communicate socially anymore!”

S

ound familiar? Welcome to the world of “Common Phrases Parents Say To Convey How Much They Don’t Understand The World of Digital Natives!” Whew- that’s a long title, but it’s pretty accurate. If you are reading this article, and currently parenting a young child, tween, or teen, you are parenting a “digital native”- a child that will never know what the world was like before the internet, except through books or film (which they will be streaming, by the way). In a 2015 Pew Research Center study, 94% of teens identified using the internet at least once per day, with 24% of them reporting that they are online constantly on a daily basis. Social media, in particular, has resulted in excess access to each other, day and night. Technology provides them with the means to connect with each other, express their creativity, engage in activism, and be entrepreneurial. But, they are still children and can be negatively influenced by each other when in groups and may struggle with considering the long term impact of their choices of how much they share online. With that in mind, internet safety starts with us as parents being aware of what and how our children are communicating through technology. To the right are some things to consider to ensure that your child stays on the right side of safe use of the internet and social media.

1. Stop resisting and get familiar: Although it may not be necessary for you to use the same sites that your kids use, it doesn’t hurt to get familiar with their most popular sources of social media, like Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, etc. In this time we are living in, you may not get very far by making a fuss about how much you hate social media. Like any other privilege you give to your children, it’s better to know how these sites work, and provide some rules about your child’s use. And these are YOUR children, so don’t be shy to grab their phone every once in a while for a “tech check” to make sure their online behavior is consistent with your established standard. 2. Teach them to have a filter: By “filter” here, I am not referring to the shade of their posted pictures. Rather, teach your children about how to filter how much they share about their lives on social media, online gaming, etc. Posting their location, their possessions, or even details about their families, can result in them being open for others to prey upon them. 3. Don’t forget about online gaming: In the same Pew study, boys identified online gaming as their primary source of use of the internet. They can play with friends or strangers all over the world. Be sure to set some standards and cruise by the couch every once in a while to make sure they are engaging appropriately when playing online.

These tips are a great start, but the most important part of this matter is the communication you have with your child. Set an atmosphere where you can talk to them about their internet/technology use, and you will have a foundation to help them develop a healthy use of technology.

4. Use technology to your advantage: Parental controls are for more than just your cable TV programs. When you purchase new devices for your children, be sure to use the various settings to set limits on usage times or sites, track l ocations, etc. Obviously, this isn’t necessary for every child for every device, but this is about us as parents taking stock of our child and giving them the amount of freedom consistent with their age and maturity level. 5. Practice what you preach: This is self-explanatory. Your online footprint should be consistent with what you would want from your child: age-appropriate, responsible, and some degree of restraint.
