ummer has come to an end and now it’s time to get back into the school routine. My family had a relaxing summer hanging out and taking day trips to the beach. My kids are getting older and it’s easier as they can fill their days with things they like to do and create their own fun. I remember when my son was 5 and I was a stay-at-home mom, the summer was coming to an end and I couldn’t take another moment of him and I put him in camp for the last two weeks of the summer. I felt so guilty! As a mom, we put so much pressure on ourselves that we have to do it

This month we have a great issue packed with helpful information, check out the article written by a South Jersey MOM, “Homework Tips from Moms Who Get It” (page 8). KNOW WHEN TO TAKE A BREAK If you or your child are completely overwhelmed, stop. Take a break, and try again later. It can also be helpful to set a timer and take periodic breaks while working on long assignments. CLARIFY THE INSTRUCTIONS Make sure your child understands the instructions. Highlight the directions, and use different colors if there are multiple steps. CREATE A ROUTINE Children thrive on routine. It lets children know what to expect and keeps them organized. Create a checklist or visual schedule. SET UP A HOMEWORK STATION Make sure all the materials needed to complete homework are organized and accessible to avoid the frantic search for glue or a pencil sharpener in the middle of a project.

Homework Tips from Moms Who Get It By April Wilson

A

sk most moms about homework and you are bound to kick off a rant about the stress, the fights, the tears, and the time it takes. It’s not just your kid who yells “I can’t do it!”, or who pretends he hasn’t learnt that yet, or who rushes through the assignment to go play. Luckily, there are moms out there who’ve found secrets to success and now you can use them too.

DON’T LET THEM GET ‘HANGRY’ Before is even considered, make sure they eat a snack. Keep it simple and nutritious, such as an apple with peanut butter or yogurt and fruit. LET THEM DECOMPRESS The school day can be taxing, so give them time to relax first. Active play is a good option, since it relieves stress and burns energy. PLAY WITH TIMING Some kids do best if homework is done within a half hour after school, while other kids prefer to wait until after dinner. Pay attention to when your child is able to focus best.

8 | Sept/Oct 2018

BREAK IT INTO CHUNKS Some kids freak out just thinking about all the homework they have to do. Help them tackle it by breaking it into manageable chunks. Creating a to-do list is helpful.

“Sometimes no matter what you try, it is not enough. There is no shame in asking for help. Students often refuse to listen to their parents’ advice or complain that’s not how they do it at school”

When calling advertisers, please say you saw it in SJMOM!

START A CONVERSATION Work together to solve homework hassles. Talk to your child about the homework routine. Ask when and where they want to do homework. Listen to their concerns and input. MOTIVATE THEM There is nothing wrong with a good reward system. Parents report using candy, stickers, and extracurricular activities to motivate their children to do their homework. LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN Consider starting a study group with your child’s friends, or make homework into a game. Bonus points if you can turn an assignment into an active activity. ASK THE PROFESSIONALS Sometimes no matter what you try, it is not enough. There is no shame in asking for help. “Students often refuse to listen to their parents’ advice or complain that’s not how they do it at school. The truth is how most of us learned isn’t how they are teaching subjects today,” advises Stephanie Buchanan, Center Director of Mathnasium of Cherry Hill. “While the teacher is the obvious first choice as a tutor, sometimes the child is too eager to please, and afraid to ask questions when they don’t understand. The job of resources such as Mathnasium is to be that approachable adult that is knowledgeable of how they are learning in school and that also can teach the child in a way that makes sense to them.” The days are too short to spend fighting over math problems or crying over spelling words. With the right strategies, homework doesn’t have to be a battle every night.

DISENTANGLING TONGUE TIES By Dr. Ryan Walker, Pediatric Otolaryngologist at Advanced ENT

T

ongue tie (otherwise known as ankyloglossia in the medical literature), is a common condition in newborn children. Tongue tie refers to restriction of the tongue by a shortened, tight, or thickened frenulum, which is the attachment of tongue to the floor of the mouth (under the tongue). Typical symptoms of tongue tie include a “heart-shaped” tongue, painful breastfeeding, or difficulty latching. It is becoming increasingly recognized as a major cause of breastfeeding failure and is believed to cause speech disturbances later in childhood or adult life. Some research studies suggest that it may affect as many as 20% of children, or 1 in every 5 births, though not all babies with evidence of tongue tie are symptomatic.

research on the subject. In my experience, the most effective and lowest risk method for frenulectomy is dividing it with scissors. Unlike cautery and lasers, which generate heat and can damage surrounding tissues and structures, scissors are precise and minimize postoperative scarring. While frenulectomy is not thought to be especially painful, as a pediatric trained surgeon and a father of two, I am especially sensitive to concerns about pain. I personally will use topical lidocaine, sugar water, and/or post-procedural breastfeeding whenever possible to minimize the possibility of pain. Caring for a newborn is an incredibly stressful time in a parent’s life, and difficulty breastfeeding can be frustrating and overwhelming. Breastfeeding involves a complex interplay between mother and baby, both anatomically and physiologically. Tongue tie may be one part of this complex process, but one must be careful not to oversimplify or overemphasize its influence. Skilled lactation consultants can play a crucial role when other factors are contributing to difficulties. When concern for tongue tie exists, a detailed exam by a pediatric otolaryngologist and a thorough and thoughtful discussion of its potential impact are essential to making an informed decision on how to proceed.

As the health benefits of breastfeeding have become increasingly recognized and emphasized, so too has the diagnosis and treatment of tongue tie. Unfortunately, that diagnosis can be quite subjective and opinions vary on how to define tongue tie. The nuances of diagnosis require a thorough knowledge of anatomy and experience examining newborns that can best be provided by a pediatric otolaryngologist. Questions often arise from parents and other medical professionals about how to treat tongue tie. There are several different techniques for dividing a tongue tie (frenulectomy). I have trained with experts in several different techniques for frenulectomy and conducted, presented, and published my own

Get Back to the Big Apple! By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

S

eptember is the perfect time to use recipes that call for apples. You can find some of the most scrumptious varieties at local farm stands. If you’re looking for something fun to do with your children this fall, visit a “pick your own” apple orchard or apple farm. There’s just something special about eating dishes made with the very apples your family picks! Another plus to using apples in recipes is that they’re nutritious! Happy Fall Ya’ll! (Below is one of my favorite recipes of my mom’s. She has made this many, many times for my birthday, since I prefer homemade pie over birthday cake!)

MOM’S SUPREME APPLE PIE • 6 cups baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp. almond extract • 1/2 cup raw sugar or natural sugar substitute • Pinch of sea salt • 3 tbs. unbleached all-purpose or whole wheat flour • 4 thin slices of butter • Pie crust (recipe follows) Preheat oven to 350° Place apples in a bowl, mix in cinnamon, almond extract, sugar and salt. Stir in flour. Set mixture aside. Note: Good apples to use are Granny Smith, Rome, Golden Delicious and McIntosh. Using a few different types of apples in this recipe makes for a great pie!

circle on a lightly floured board using a floured rolling pin. Roll dough 2 inches larger than the pie plate. Ease the dough crust into the pie plate, pressing gently yet firmly against the bottom and sides. Pour apple mixture into the bottom pie crust. Place the butter slices in different areas on top of the apple mixture. Then place top crust over the apples and crimp the edges together all the way around the pie. Make a few “X” slits on the top of the crust to create a “vent” for the steam. Brush top of pie crust lightly with egg wash and sprinkle a little sugar on top, if desired. Cover edge of pie with strips of aluminum foil or pie crust shield to prevent too much browning. Remove shield during the last 15-20 minutes of baking. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until apples are fork tender. Cool pie or serve warm with favorite ice cream.

FLAKY PIE CRUST • 2/3 cup plus 2 tbs. butter, softened • 2 tbs. pure maple syrup • 1 tsp. sea salt • 4 to 6 tbs. cold water • 2 cups unbleached white flour or whole wheat flour • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash Blend butter and maple syrup into flour (don’t over mix), add in salt. Sprinkle in the water one tablespoon at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened and dough almost cleans the sides of the bowl. A little more water (1-2 tablespoons) can be added if needed. Shape dough into a ball, divide dough in half, then flatten each half into a disk, wrap in Saran Wrap and chill for at least half an hour in the refrigerator. Then working with one disk of dough at a time, roll into a round 18 | Sept/Oct 2018

Note: Place pie on a baking sheet before baking. This will help catch any juice that may overflow. APPLE PECAN LOG • 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cup tart apple, cored, peeled and finely chopped • 3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted and divided • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon • Tortilla chips, snack crackers, butter cookies, pretzels Combine cream cheese, apple, 1/4 cup pecans and cinnamon; form into a log. Roll log in remaining pecans; cover with plastic wrap and chill for 3 to 5 hours or overnight. Let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes before serving. Serve with a variety of dippers. Note: To toast nuts, spread pecans on a shallow baking pan, dot with butter and put into a 350° oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes or until nuts turn golden -- watch carefully so they don’t burn. Remove from oven and allow nuts to cool. As always, Bon Appetit!
