Make your Halloween treats festive with these easy jack-o’-lantern toppers. To create these adorable and spooky pumpkins, you’ll need: • Orange water balloons • Lollipop craft sticks • Black permanent marker • Green paper • Hot glue or craft glue Blow up an orange water balloon with air and tie it. Draw a jack-o’-lantern face on the balloon with a black marker. Using hot glue (on low heat setting) or craft glue, attach some green paper around the balloon tie to look like pumpkin leaves. A tremor, or shaking, usually begins in your hand or fingers. You may notice a backand-forth rubbing of your thumb and forefinger, known as a pill-rolling tremor. The tremor associated with Parkinson’s is mostly when your hand is relaxed (at rest).

arkinson’s disease is not just an old person’s disease anymore. Early on-set Parkinson’s is becoming more prevalent in younger people. Each year, 6,000 to 12,000 under the age of 40 are diagnosed with this disease. Parkinson’s occurs when a person’s brain slowly stops producing Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, which is a chemical released by nerve cells to send signals to other nerve cells. With less dopamine, a person has less ability to regulate their movements and emotions. With no family history, Gina Endres of Vineland knows all too well about this. At

the age of 40, she started to experience subtle symptoms of the disease. It took two years, several doctors, and many tests to reach a diagnosis. Ironically, her first symptom was not detected by her but through one of her students who noticed she was holding her hand a certain way. For Gina, it was something that had gone undetected until that moment. Some Parkinson’s suffers have tremors while others have stiffening primarily on one side of the body. Gina has episodes that effect the left side of her body. Although she feels them coming, she has little time to prepare for them. While she is managing her daily life with the disease,

Rigid muscles. Muscle stiffness may occur in any part of your body. The stiff muscles can limit your range of motion and cause you pain. Rigidity of the muscles in the arms, legs, and body makes it harder to move. Getting out of bed in the morning, or standing up from a chair, can be difficult. Persistent neck pain. Parkinson’s-related neck pain differs from common neck pain mainly in that it persists, unlike a pulled muscle or cramp, which should go away after a day or two. Some people experience numbness and tingling while some, like Gina, experience achiness or discomfort that reaches down the shoulder and arm. Stretching helps to relieve some of the stiffness. Lack of facial expression. Loss of dopamine can affect the facial muscles, making them stiff and slow, resulting in a lack of expression. As an early symptom, the changes are subtle. A person with Parkinson’s may look bored or disapproving however it’s the muscles that become immobilized, leaving the patient with a contrary appearance. Gina now manages her disease with regimented medications and no longer defines herself by how much she can accomplish but by how relying on family and friends brings about stronger and deeper relationships. With the help of advancements in treatment, her goal is to live a long and rewarding life despite having Parkinson’s disease. www.southjerseymom.com

t’s one of the worst experiences a woman can feel in a lifetime. Carrying a baby and then losing it, is a devastating experience. So often, the emotional scars outlasts the physical trauma. Miscarriages, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is the most common type of pregnancy loss, in which a pregnancy ends on it’s own, usually within the first 20 weeks of gestation. Usually, miscarriages occur anywhere from 10 to 25% of all clinically recognized pregnancies. Most miscarriages, according to the American Pregnancy Association website, occur during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, which is also known as the first trimester. There are many reasons why a miscarriage occurs, but so often, the real cause remains a mystery. The most common cause of a miscarriage, according to the American Pregnancy Association website, is Chromosomal Abnormality, meaning that something is wrong with the baby’s chromosomes. Most Chromosomal Abnormalities are due to such causes as a damaged egg or sperm cell or problems when the fertilized cell went through its divisions. Yet, many women still believe the myth that their behavior had something to do with their pregnancy loss. Working, exercising, having sex or even using birth control before getting pregnant does not cause early pregnancy loss. However, health experts do agree that it’s best for a woman not to smoke, drink alcohol or do any type of illicit drugs while she’s pregnant. The American Pregnancy Association does offer these warning signs that you may be experiencing a miscarriage if you have any of these symptoms: • Mild to severe back pain that’s worse than normal menstrual cramps • Weight loss • Brown or bright red bleeding with or without cramps. A small amount of bleeding and cramping in the early stages of pregnancies is quite common. Usually, the bleeding stops on its own and the pregnancy continues on normally.

Finding Hope After Miscarriage

After a miscarriage, there’s bound to be a rollercoaster of emotions taking place, such as sadness and frequent crying, to bouts of anger, disbelief, guilt and depression. It’s important to keep the lines of communications open to family and friends who can help to get you through the grieving process. When it comes to losing a baby, people react in many different ways, said Certified Registered Nurse, Ann Coyle, Manager of Perinatal Bereavement Programs at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees. “Some scream, curse and occasionally a dad will punch a wall, some shut down and don’t cry or say anything. Most react with crying, questioning, and confusion,” said Coyle, who runs the hospital’s Helping Other Parents in Normal Grief, better known as HOPING, that helps parents who have lost children from conception to one year’s of age. The program, said Coyle, helps to “connect families with other people who understand what they are going through and are willing to listen to anything they have to say.” The parents call the group, she said, “the group no one wants to belong to, but they are glad it’s here when they need it!” HOPING is open to anyone who has lost a child from conception through one year of life. The group meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barry Brown Health Education Center, 106 Carnie Boulevard in Voorhees. The group is free and no sign-up is required. Planning for COLLEGE Without Going Broke P

aying for college is one of the largest expense you will have in your life. A four-year degree can cost as much as $250,000. Most parents are wondering, “How am I ever going to pay for this? I have three kids. That’s $750,000.” The good news is that through proper planning you can pay for college without going broke. There are many types of accounts that you could save your money in, one of the most popular I see often is the 529 plan. The main benefit to this type of plan is the that the money grows tax free and is nontaxable if used for college. In some cases, this could actually hurt you if the money is not used for college. All the earnings on this account are taxed at your current bracket and a 10% penalty will be imposed by the IRS. 529 plans are usually invested in mutual funds so they are also subject to market fluctuations, depending on timing this could be a positive or a negative when it comes time to use the money for college. A colleague of mine experienced a different type of drawback to owning a 529 plan when his son received a full scholarship but it would not pay a penny until he spent down his 529. Clearly, there are pros and cons to setting up a 529 plan, considering these factors and careful planning should be done before just jumping in because it worked out for someone else! I would like to introduce another option to be considered, I would say it’s one of the most underutilized and misunderstood asset classes out there. Todays cash value life insurance has many new and innovative living benefits, along with a tax efficient strategy to accumulate money that can be used to fund college or your retirement if plans change! The cash value grows tax deferred and if structured and utilized properly the cash can be taken out tax free from the policy. Life insurance is also one of the few assets not counted FAFSA form. When choosing a college, don’t automatically assume that state schools are going to be cheaper. In many cases, a private school actually can cost less than a state school given the same financial need and curriculum of the student. How can this be? Private schools usually have large endowments and fewer students, meaning they can offer more aid, either merit or needs based regardless of the parent’s income and assets. The sooner you start planning and saving for your child the better off you’ll all be. couple of months ago I was at a community day for a local town. I stayed after it was over to help a friend break down her display. While helping her, I noticed that a mother and her daughter were having difficulty loading their merchandise into their SUV. I picked up their two folded tables and carried one in each hand to their car. The daughter who was about 12 years old said to me, “WOW! You’re so strong. You could carry two tables and we struggle to get one in the car.” I laughed it off and said to her, “You can be strong, too.” She replied, “Really?! I can barely do any exercise because of my big tummy.” We had a brief conversation about exercise and healthy eating. That exchange stuck with me and I wish that we had more time to talk about some more ideas to get fit and healthy as a family. Here’s what I wish I had the opportunity to say: Get active as family. Think about it – it’s hard as an adult to exercise by yourself. That’s why we have group classes, team based workouts, group challenges and personal trainers. 16 | September/October 2017

So why would we tell our kids to go play or exercise while we sit and watch? Children love it when they get to do something with their family. Join in and do it together. Resist the temptation to sign your child up for a sport or activity that they do by themselves or with children that they don’t know or connect with. Find something that the entire family will enjoy doing together. Try hiking, training for a 5k walk/run, bike riding, martial arts, ninja warrior training or bi-weekly jumping at a trampoline park. Be prepared to try several activities before you find the “right” one. Select healthy recipes together. Hold a weekly meeting where you choose recipes that you would like to try in the upcoming week(s). Pick up a healthy cooking magazine, or visit a healthy cooking website for inspiration. Shop together. Last year we joined a CSA where we not only go to pick up our vegetables but we can also pick our own fruits and veggies. I was amazed at how my daughter would eat the green beans that she picked but won’t

touch them if they come from the grocery store. You might not belong to a CSA but take full advantage of the local farmers markets and the produce sections at your local supermarket. Take your child with you to the store or farmers market and let her pick one or two new vegetables to try that week. Not sure how to prepare it? Check out google, YouTube or Facebook for tips. Cook together. It’s so much fun cooking with kids. Yup, it takes slightly longer to get a meal on the table but the life skills and confidence that they learn is priceless. The Common Causes of Bleeding During Pregnancy By Monica Agar, MD, Virtua Ob/Gyn—Virtua Ob/Gyn Pinelands We’re fortunate to live in a time when technology and research enables women to be healthier and more informed throughout their pregnancies. But, with knowledge, sometimes comes worry. One worrisome thing many pregnant women experience is spotting (light bleeding). It’s very common, but it’s still scary when it happens. Here are some reasons why spotting can occur throughout pregnancy. If you experience it, call your ob/gyn immediately to see what’s causing it and to ease your fears.

First Trimester

First trimester bleeding can occur in up to 20 percent of pregnancies. Here are a few of the reasons why you may experience it. Implantation spotting occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. This type of spotting can be heavy enough to be mistaken for a light period. It usually occurs 1-2 weeks after fertilization. Sub-chorionic bleeding occurs when blood collects between the amniotic sac and the uterus. This can be accompanied by light cramping and can occur any time in the first trimester. Often, the blood is re-absorbed by the body. Miscarriage can cause spotting or bleeding, as well as cramping and low back pain. Most miscarriages occur during the first 10 weeks. However, after the heartbeat is heard, miscarriage risks drop significantly. Ectopic pregnancy happens when fertilization occurs outside of the uterus and the egg implants in the walls of the fallopian tubes; in rare cases, it can implant in the cervix or ovary. An ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition that needs emergency treatment.

Molar pregnancy, though uncommon, occurs when a fertilized egg doesn’t develop into a fetus and becomes an abnormal growth instead. Cervical trauma or changes can cause bleeding. This can happen following intercourse or gynecological exams. Inflammation can cause bleeding and may be the result of infection – either sexually transmitted or non-sexually transmitted. This can happen during the second and third trimesters as well. Cervical polyps and cervical cancer also can cause bleeding, but they’re the least likely reason.

Second/Third Trimester

Later in pregnancy, the fetus is more developed and bleeding causes are quite different. Placenta problems have a few causes, but all placenta problems result in immediate delivery by cesarean section.

• Placenta previa is a condition in which the placenta completely or partially covers the cervix. The placenta also can lay low in the uterus close to the cervix. With placenta previa, the placenta can become exposed during labor, which is a danger to the fetus. Sometimes, even basic activity like exercise or intercourse can cause bleeding. The placenta can move position as the pregnancy advances, so placenta previa can resolve during pregnancy. If it doesn’t, the woman would need to be delivered by cesarean section.

• Placenta abruption occurs when

the placenta detaches or separates from the uterus. It can occur as a partial detachment or a complete detachment. A complete detachment is an emergent situation that threatens the pregnancy.

• Vasa previa is relatively uncommon, but occurs when fetal blood vessels, such as those from the placenta or umbilical cord, present over the cervix.

Preterm labor is when the cervix starts dilating before 37 weeks. In this circumstance, your doctor often will try to stop labor until you reach full term. Bloody show is a type of bleeding women in labor often experience. It usually has a mucous-like consistency and can range in color from red to brown. Finally, it’s possible that the spotting you see is not related to your pregnancy at all. If you have hemorrhoids (which are common in pregnant women) or a urinary tract infection, you may see blood that’s a result one of those conditions.

It’s important to keep an eye out for unusual discharge or blood. If you’re ever concerned, your OB/GYN is the best resource to help you understand what’s going on and to make sure you and your baby are in the best of health.

Get Back to the Big Apple! By Lisa Ann Panzino DiNunzio

September is the perfect time to use recipes that call for apples. You can find some of the most scrumptious varieties at local farm stands. If you’re looking for something fun to do with your children this fall, visit a “pick your own” apple orchard or apple farm. There’s just something special about eating dishes made with the very apples your family picks! Another plus to using apples in recipes is that they’re nutritious! Happy Fall Ya’ll! (Below is one of my favorite recipes of my mom’s. She has made this many, many times for my birthday, since I prefer homemade pie over birthday cake!)

Mom’s Supreme Apple Pie • 6 cups baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp. almond extract • 1/2 cup raw sugar or natural sugar substitute • Pinch of sea salt • 3 tbs. unbleached all-purpose or whole wheat flour • 4 thin slices of butter • Pie crust (recipe follows) Preheat oven to 350° Place apples in a bowl, mix in cinnamon, almond extract, sugar and salt. Stir in flour. Set mixture aside. Note: Good apples to use are Granny Smith, Rome, Golden Delicious and McIntosh. Using a few different types of apples in this recipe makes for a great pie! Flaky Pie Crust • 2/3 cup plus 2 tbs. butter, softened • 2 tbs. pure maple syrup • 1 tsp. sea salt • 4 to 6 tbs. cold water • 2 cups unbleached white flour or whole wheat flour • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash Blend butter and maple syrup into flour (don’t over mix), add in salt. Sprinkle in the water one tablespoon at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened and dough almost cleans the sides of the bowl. A little more water (1-2 tablespoons) can be added if needed. Shape dough into a ball, divide dough in half, then flatten each half into a disk, wrap in Saran Wrap and chill for at least half an hour in the refrigerator. Then working with one disk of dough at a time, roll into a round circle on a lightly floured board using a floured rolling pin. Roll dough 2 inches larger than the pie plate. Ease the dough crust into the pie plate, pressing gently yet firmly against the bottom and sides. Pour apple mixture into the bottom pie crust. Place the butter slices in different areas on top of the apple mixture. Then place top crust over the apples and crimp the edges together all the way around the pie. Make a few “X” slits on the top of the crust to create a “vent” for the steam. Brush top of pie crust lightly with egg wash and sprinkle a little sugar on top, if desired. Cover edge of pie with strips of aluminum foil or pie crust shield to prevent too much browning. Remove shield during the last 15-20 minutes of baking. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until apples are fork tender. Cool pie or serve warm with favorite ice cream. Note: Place pie on a baking sheet before baking. This will help catch any juice that may overflow.

Apple Pecan Log • 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cup tart apple, cored, peeled and finely chopped • 3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted and divided • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon • Tortilla chips, snack crackers, butter cookies, pretzels Combine cream cheese, apple, 1/4 cup pecans and cinnamon; form into a log. Roll log in remaining pecans; cover with plastic wrap and chill for 3 to 5 hours or overnight. Let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes before serving. Serve with a variety of dippers. Note: To toast nuts, spread pecans on a shallow baking pan, dot with butter and put into a 350° oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes or until nuts turn golden -- watch carefully so they don’t burn. Remove from oven and allow nuts to cool. As always, Bon Appetit!
